While sorting through some stuff last night I came across this programme from the 1979 Scottish League Cup Final. Rangers won the game 2-1, thanks to a last minute winner from Colin Jackson. We were at the game on the Saturday, then on the Monday our folks surprised us with a guided tour of Ibrox, after which we got to meet the players at training. I had the programme with me, so I got as many of them as I could to sign it for me. ⚽️🔵🔴⚪️⚽️ #rangersfc #scottishleaguecup #watp #colinjackson

With the Olympics imminent and at the forefront of my mind at the moment as I’m sure it is with most sports fans, it sent me on a trip down memory lane.  In particular the 90’s and the athletes we had at that time at the peak of their powers flying the flag for Britain.

Let’s have a quick look at three athletes who immediately came to mind:

Colin Jackson:  A majestic sprint hurdler.  He was not the tallest, but had the silkiest technique that would make him glide over the hurdles.  The most vivid memory I have of Colin was winning Bronze in the 1987 world championship and his team mate Jon Ridgeon winning silver, both very young.  I was only a kid at the time but I remember it because I’d never seen anyone dip like that before.  Both Jackson and Ridgeon were almost horizontal flying through the finish line.  A great sight.  

Jackson went on to become World record holder, World champion, European champion and Commonwealth Champion and is seen as one of the greatest sprint hurdlers in history. 

Sally Gunnell:  Another great hurdler, Sally stepped up from 100 meter hurdles early in her career to blossom at the 400 meter hurdles.  Taking the technique and speed from the 100m hurdles up to the 400m hurdles made her almost unstoppable in her prime.  Sally won the Commonwealth, European, World and Olympic titles and was also world record holder.  I believe Sally is the only woman to have won all of those 400m hurdles titles…..history maker.  A truly world class athlete with a record which will be difficult to match.

  Linford Christie: Like a fine wine Linford came into his own as he matured, winning the Olympic 100m gold medal at 32 years old.  At a time when USA ruled the sprints, Linford broke the trend and put Britain firmly on the sprinting map.  Like Sally Gunnell, Christie held all four major titles and also held the European 100m record.

 A golden era that should be looked back on with pride.
