Is anyone else a bit exhausted by the Colin hate, even within the Polin fandom? The amount of fanfic I have to dodge and weave through because of tags like “Colin got off too easy this season” or fix it’s centered around Colin having to grovel more because Pen deserves it.
I love Pen with all of my heart but I swear this fandom makes me become more and more of a Colin defender out of pure spite.

I want to preface this by saying that I don’t partake in ship wars over the couples because I love all the couples and all the characters. Admittedly, I love some more than others, but not to the extent that I hate everyone else. That being said, I love Simon and Anthony, but the way people excuse their actions, which were far worse than anything Colin ever did, while trying to villainize Colin, is absolutely insane to me.

I love Colin Bridgerton.
He is a young man trying to find his place amongst his family and peers.
He is silly and funny.
He is charming and witty.
He is handsome and smart.
He is endlessly kind and generous.
He is keen and perceptive.
BUT
He can be childish and has a hero complex.
He is too quick to trust others.
He says the wrong things at the wrong times and can have a temper.
He forgets who he is at his core in order to fit in amongst his peers.
He often is confused by his own feelings and wants.
Colin is not a perfect man. He is flawed and unsure of himself. He struggles with knowing who he is and what people want of him, and that keeps him from truly finding his purpose. He has so much room to grow into himself and his heart and I cannot love him more because of it.

If Colin Bridgerton has a million fans, I'm one of them.
If Colin Bridgerton has 100 fans, I am one of them.
If Colin Bridgerton has one fan, I'm probably dead, but Nicola Coughlan is alive and well and that's something worth celebrating.

This part is so special to me, the visual representation of the wife using the LW pamphlet as a shield from her abusive husband.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The husband is fuming, but she does not appear confident instead of fearful for what he might do. In a time where you're meant to let your husband do whatever he pleases with you, I can't imagine how important it must've been for her to not only have someone on her side, but that someone being one of the most relevant voices of the ton.
Before this shot she also sided with the maid, publically shaming the mistress that fired her for an unfair reason. And it will help, because the ton cares too much about LW's opinion, that's why the Queen told Eloise that she had no idea the power she held. The husband and the mistress being shamed publically by LW will force them to behave due to the social pressure.
Penelope is always being villanized for being Lady Whistledown and spreading gossip, so much so that people forget she has and still uses LW as a way to help others, not only the Bridgerton, not only through words but personally, like when she pressed for the paper boys to get paid their due. She did more for the working class and for other women that anyone on that job
The parallel of both colums too were amazing on showing this. Cressida and her mother thought the column would require nothing but scandalous gossips, but Pen's is more than that, she can be vicious but she has never been unnecessarily cruel and slandering. Like she said, she only writes the truth.
TL;DR: I do not vibe with the villification of both Penelope and Lady Whistledown, not when she has used for good so many times

More humorous takes about the Bridgerton brothers that make me laugh is that I cannot stress enough, how much I love their 'unhinged for wife' energy. Because it's just so funny
Anthony, like, you can see it, he's not even trying to hide it, he can and will be a meanie to his nemesis Kate who he also happens to love more than life itself, and to everyone if they don't fall in line. that's his whole mojo. People meet him and know at first glance that Anthony Bridgerton will not hesitate to use a gun if the occasion calls for it, because he outright intimidates people into submission. So good luck trying to mess with him or with his wife. He will end you. Have you seen him play against his wife in Pall Mall. He loves her, but he will not lose to this woman! She will one day respect him!. He's the boss of the house dammit (he's not, it's Kate, but she lets him think he is)
Colin is my favorite. because he looks nice and he looks friendly, and he would totally sink to the deepest of the low to have Penelope the moment he kissed her. This man is absolutely as unhinged as Anthony possibly more so, and he hides it so well, that everyone thinks he's the most charming brother. In fact the only person who knows how crazy Colin really is, has to be Penelope. Colin can talk his way out of anything (even a murder sentence. Do you ever wonder why nobody has ever sued Penelope for defamation? Because I sure don't), he's a people person. It's maddening, I want to convince people that Colin is the worst of the worst, and people are still like 'but he looks like such a harmless guy, just look at him eat that eclair' yeah! I know! that's how he got to Penelope! he was all cute, pretending to be nice and by the time she discovered he was the devil in disguise, he already had blackmail material on her!!. Men like Colin scare me, because I know he's bats*t but I just can't prove it.
Benedict and Gregory are just the same version of unhinged, just in a different font. Because they actually believed themselves to be the sane ones and then they met their true loves and you see that sanity? it went out the window.
Benedict used to think he was such a gentleman, who respected ladies and would never dishonor one, and guess what kind of obsessive idiot he turned into the moment Sophie said 'no' to his seduction tactics, be my mistress this, be my mistress that, Sophie ( and I) just knows Benedict's thought process alone should be landing him in jail instead of her, but he gets away with it, because apparently annoying her to death doesn't actually count as a crime. And the thing is, that she's the only one who triggers the crazy in Benedict, he's perfectly sane with everyone else, but it's her and only her who has him going all naked swimming in the lake, and obsessive paintings of her face plastered on all his sketchbooks (and his home, actually I'm pretty sure Benedict has a secret Lady in Silver shrine somewhere in My Cottage, that he took down before Sophie could find out about it) , not to mention his whole 'F society if I can't f Sophie' love at first sight excuse that somehow everyone swallows without questioning how crazy Benedict actually is.
And then he had to go teach that to Gregory! And Gregory was such a sweetheart, I actually thought he was going to make it to half of his book without going unhinged and then Lucy tells him the name of her fiancee and he goes ' wait, I know the guy, he's super gay, I can't let you marry him... ' my brother in the force what is your problem! Leave the girl alone. She's your friend, stop stalking her, she's got her own problems to deal with!! Lucy did nothing to deserve how Gregory randomly went from nice guy she was super supportive of in the courtship of her best friend, to kinda obsessive dude who won't leave her alone and wants to ruin her arranged marriage (let's ignore that said arranged marriage needed to be ruined and it might as well be by him). Guy was a green flag for Hermione but the moment he began fixating on Lucy, homegirl kinda saw the light and was like ' he's crazy, yup, totally mad.. about me sure, but this guy... He's never been told no in his life and it shows, it shows for miles'
And I just laugh so hard because people look at Anthony's fed up face and somehow think that he's the worst to fear in in the Bridgerton family. But nobody knows just how crazy his brothers are, except their wives. At this point Anthony's resting B face has to be some sort of defense mechanism because he had to grow up with Benedict and Colin while trying to raise Gregory. He may look intimidating but he's actually a reasonable man if you think about it. But his brothers, those three are just hiding their unhinged for wife energy a lot better. And you just don't want to know what kinda chaotic crazy thing they're capable of doing if they think it would impress Penelope, Sophie and Lucy
And that's the tea.

It's all, "you can't force feelings for someone" and "some flames are a slower burn" and "romantic interest shouldn't be held to the expectation of reciprocation"... until it's Colin Bridgerton viewing Penelope as platonic for two seasons. Then it's suddenly, "you had your shot buddy" and "you didn't appreciate what was right in front of you" ? Why?

BRIDGERTON SPOILERS
I cannot stress enough that peneloise finding their way back to each other was the real love story of season 3 pt.2 because what do you mean penelope was ready to give up her dreams and live vicariously through her husband like any other woman in the ton until there was danger of cressida enacting revenge on eloise through whistledown??? WHAT DO YOU MEAN ELOISE DIDN’T WANT TO BE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE BETWEEN PEN AND COLIN AFTER HE LITERALLY FOUND OUT SHE WAS WHISTLEDOWN??? WHAT DO YOU MEAN ELOISE DEFENDED PENELOPE TO HER BROTHERS FACE AND SAID SHE NEVER WROTE ANYTHING THAT BAD ABOUT THEM WHEN SHE DAMN WELL KNEW WHAT SHE WROTE ABOUT COLIN AT THE START OF THE SEASON AND HER AT THE END OF LAST ONE??? WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE CRIED TEARS OF JOY AT POLIN’S WEDDING? WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE COMFORTED PENELOPE AFTER THEIR FIGHT??? WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE IS A PROUD MEMBER OF THE PENELOPE BRIDGERTON DEFENSE SQUAD. WHAT DO YOU MEAN “TELL ME WHAT YOU ARE READING?” WITH ALL THE HAND HOLDING AND COMFORTING PENELOPE WASNT SUPER QUEER CODED??? Michaela Stirling, I beg of you, please show Eloise Bridgerton the ways of lesbianism. The girly needs it.

#yessssssss #Colin Bridgerton Defense Squad Where can I have my club card ? I definitely would adhere to this squad, to protect my baby boy. I want a space where I can talk, all I want about him without the haters coming after him ( and yes this includes some self proclaimed Polin fan. Like ... why liking this ship, if you don't like one half, it's beyond me XD ) If you want to send me nice things about Colin, my ask box is open. I so rarely positivity about him, or things who are just making him a prop to Pen's self esteem.

The Phillip defense squad has currently bumped Phillip up to my second favorite romantic lead in Bridgerton as a whole and this is why.
(yes, you heard me right, Colin has been demoted to number 3, right under Phillip and Anthony)
In Defense of Phillip Crane...
In all honesty, I’m not entirely sure what there is to defend. Phillip Crane is one of my favorite love interests in the Bridgerton series. He’s traumatized and pained and underneath the years of trauma he endured, is a kind, passionate man genuinely just trying his best. I’ve noticed a lot of the fandom treats Phillip as if he’s lesser than and undeserving of Eloise which angers me to no end because why? I admit, his proclamation of love was problematic but other than that…why do so many people not like this character? Why do so many people think Eloise deserved better?
She found a man who does not judge her modern mind and write off her intellectual thoughts as troubling ones no young lady should have. Someone who she developed a deep connection with before she could even meet him. Who managed to stimulate not only her body but her mind. Who values her as more than just a wife despite what he himself would like to believe in the beginning of their relationship. Who loves her and who is willingly to put in the work to make their relationship and life worthy of her.
Phillip is not perfect but he’s real. He’s a man with demons trying to navigate healthy fatherhood and romance after years of abuse and neglect. He’s not the best at it, clearly, but he is trying. He doesn’t expect Eloise to adhere to their society and he grows to love her for all she is. In Phillip, Eloise finds a partner, family and life free of the restrictions that once terrified her when it came to the idea of marriage and settling down. Someone who understands her want to learn more and adores every part of her body and mind. He may not show it in conventional ways but he is learning and he is trying to be the man his family and partner need him to be.
In Eloise, Phillip finds a partner to help him navigate the life forced upon him. An equal who challenges him and pushes him towards the progression he once shied away from out of fear of failing. Their love story is messy, funny, sad and beautiful. Phillip Crane is not undeserving of Eloise Bridgerton, in fact he’s just the kind of man she deserves. One who lets her run wild and does not restrict her to the rules of high society.
Give my herb himbo a break, the man is trying his best and improving as a father and partner as he heals from years…years of trauma so he won’t inflict the same pain he was succumbed to on his loved ones. What part of that makes him any less deserving of love? What part of that makes him undeserving of Eloise Bridgerton? A woman who’s despised the men of high society for years because none of them could give her the substance or understanding Phillip does.
In conclusion, Phillip Crane is a flawed character but that does not make him any less deserving of the love story he is given. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

I died. I died, came back from the dead to laugh my ass off, and then died again.
Because srsly, she's his #1 fan.
If Colin Bridgerton has a million fans, I'm one of them.
If Colin Bridgerton has 100 fans, I am one of them.
If Colin Bridgerton has one fan, I'm probably dead, but Nicola Coughlan is alive and well and that's something worth celebrating.
