“My dearest disciple…. If only you were not so quick to take risks. I’d thought we’d trained such impatience out of you?”

Something, beyond the pain he feels, curls nastily in his gut. It feels like shame. Is it responding to the disappointment he can hear in this stranger's voice? But why?

He doesn’t even know who these people are.

“Sect leader, there’s really no time.”

Another sigh. “Yes, I see. Very well. If it takes the caves to straighten this out, then so be it.”

His hand tightens, where it’s clenched around the hilt of the sword that rests, swathed, at his side. The fingers curls, knuckles white, where they’ve gripped the weapon for… how long was he down there for?

He isn’t sure he can let go of it, anymore. Will he be forced to always have one hand on his weapon?

He follows the disciple down the mountain.

Once, a long time ago, when he’d allowed himself to think about it, he’d thought that death might be a final rest. Sometimes, on the nights where he’d been forced to work overtime with no compensation pay, he’d even found himself cautiously looking forward to it.

Death isn’t a rest. If anything, it’s worse.

It’s hard, he isn’t used to it, but his body remembers it, and he slowly begins to relearn what he was already suppose to know.

He doesn’t fancy dying a second time.

Death isn’t the rest that he’d once thought it would be.

There’s someone that makes those faint leftovers of his predecessor curl uneasily upon themselves whenever he sees them.

It starts immediately upon their first encounter, this skinny, emaciated and threadbare boy standing over the body of the man that he has just killed. The splatter of blood from the blow, sitting across his face and glistening in the soft moonlight that peaks through the trees, hasn’t even dried yet. This, coupled with the scowl of sheer hatred that adorns his young face… he looks threatening, despite his small stature. Dangerous, despite his trembling grip on the blade.

And yet, his — Yue Qi’s — heart stutters, crying so loudly for this boy that he can barely hear beyond the blood that rushes past his ears.

“Finally decided to show up?” The boy sneers, tossing the slightly rusted blade to the ground. It lands with a clatter that echoes in the silence of the woods that surround them. “... You’re too late. Much, much too late.”

Yue Qi stares at him, something sour climbing up his throat, and he doesn’t even know why.

This is his first meeting with Shen Jiu.

As time goes on, and years pass by, this slip of a boy never ceases to confuse him and make his heart hurt wretchedly, in equal measure.

Yue Qi becomes Yue Qingyuan, and Shen Jiu becomes Shen Qingqiu — something that makes the sneer on the boy’s face falter, eyes shining in mysterious fury before his face smooths out into that cold, impassive mask once more — and, really, nothing changes.

He’s still confused. He’s never not. But, he’s trying his best to do good by his martial family. He isn’t sure there’s anything else he can do.

His fellow head disciples — now peak lords — are fine people. He’s grown fond of them, over the years that he’s been forced to get to know them by his own teacher (he’s never called the man his shizun. Despite the leftovers that swirl inside of him, it’s not really his place). He cares for them, as much as he can bring himself to, but he can tell that even they must sense the slight distance between them that he just isn’t capable of breaching.

Even now, he’s still tired.

Shen Jiu, Qingqiu, is counted among them, despite his avarice and clear detest. That’s another he can’t help, the fondness (and odd, distant grief) that curls inside him whenever he looks at the boy, now man.

His predecessor had once loved him, he’s fairly certain, now that he’s had the chance to fully examine the feelings those shreds of soul can communicate to him. Whatever Shen Jiu had been to Yue Qi, he’d loved him, so fiercely and perhaps borderline obsessively that it’s stronger than any other leftover of his predecessor he’s ever felt. Stronger than the duty to his sect.

For that alone, he — Yue Qingyuan — will watch over Shen Qingqiu as much as the man, cold and hateful and hurt and abandoned as he is, will allow him.

It’s no surprise, really, that he eventually grows fond of him, too.

But love? No. He doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to bring himself to love his martial brother to the same degree of… fervor, that Yue Qi once had.

And then, Shen Jiu is hit by a familiar fever that Yue Qingyuan can remember feeling down his very bones, once upon a time — when he wakes, he isn’t the same Shen Jiu that he’s slowly, over the years, gotten to know. Slowly, over the years, grown to care for.

Knowing what he does, it’s very clear to him that this isn’t Shen Jiu at all. It’s someone else. Someone who Yue Qingyuan doesn’t know. Someone that Yue Qingyuan can’t even begrudge, because he knows it isn’t even their fault. Because he knows that, whoever they are, they haven't chosen this for themself.

It doesn’t stop him, in those first few weeks, from feeling irrational. He isn’t sure what he’s doing. He’s mourning, surely. Shen Jiu is dead, that much he knows. The fact that no one seems to even mind is —

It’s breathtakingly upsetting.

He hadn’t known… that he’d grown to care this much for the man that he’d never even gathered the courage to ask. Why.

He’ll never know, now.

He’s fine. He’s kind hearted, despite how hard he pretends not to be, ostentatiously trying to act as close to what he thinks Shen Jiu had been as he can. Beneath that, he is scared, and Yue Qingyuan can see it bright as day. Beyond his fear, he is kind, he is sweet, he is amusingly sarcastic without any of the vitriol. He is leagues lighter than Shen Jiu ever had the capabilities of being.

Yue Qingyuan can see why their martial siblings like him better.

It doesn’t make it hurt any less. But, he figures, that if he gives himself enough time, he can grow to care for this Shen Qingqiu in the same way that he’d grown to care for his predecessor.

Unlike normal options, however, binary options do not fluctuate in value. Either the option is “in the money” on expiry – in which case it pays out – or it isn’t, in which case it expires worthless. They get to collect the hefty premiums, but never have to pay out.

The media is part of the problem. There was also the very recent example of Giovani , a 20-year-old medical student in Plymouth who claimed to be making six figures a month from foreign exchange trading. One major newspaper reported this month that more than 1,000 investors were sucked in by Singh’s Instagram account, which showed him posing in designer clothes with expensive cars at plush holiday resorts. Those who signed up for his services found that their trading accounts were emptied on Christmas Eve and the FCA has added him to its warning list of unauthorised traders (after the fact, unfortunately). But what the paper doesn’t mention in this particular piece is that Singh’s “success” was first reported on its own website in breathless, no-questions-asked fashion, in November, just a month before it all went horribly wrong.

This aggravates me because, as a genuine trader, I work hard to make profits and I know what it takes. I also don’t like to see people being conned. So I want to unpack this story for you, so that you don’t end up falling for one of these scams or something similar.

How does the binary-options scam work?

There is a reason why so many gentlemen (it’s usually men) in their early 20s now apparently own private jets, luxury cars and slick watches. It just may not be because they’ve cracked the financial markets as they claim. As Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett’s business partner, puts it: “Show me the incentive and I will show you the outcome”. There are many reputable financial-trading firms and brokerages out there. However, many – ones that I would describe as “bucket shops” – are not so reputable. Spread-betting firms typically make their money on the spread (the gap between the buying price and the selling price) and the commission paid by their clients. So their business model does not benefit from losing traders.

However, many brokers know that a losing trader can be very profitable – for them. If you know that 90% of traders will lose all of their money within six months, what do you do? Simply take the other side of the trade. When Johnny Punter buys, the broker sells. And when Johnny Punter wishes to cover his losses, the broker buys and collects the profit.

Unprofitable traders are so profitable for many a bucket shop that they will pay handsome introduction fees for new traders. Therein lies the incentive. It doesn’t matter if you’re actually making any money from your trading – if you can get even a £20 incentive for every trader who signs up with the minimum deposit of a few hundred pounds, then you only need to sign up 1,000 people a month to make £20,000. And the reality is that these brokers aren’t offering just £20 for new clients – they’re offering hundreds. I know they do, because I’ve been offered it.

If you’re not a successful trader, the next best thing is to fake it. A quick Google search reveals that you can rent a Lamborghini Huracan for four days at a price of £2,500. This is fairly steep – but you can rent a Lamborghini Gallardo for two days for £1,590. Two days is more than enough for a wannabe forex guru to take hundreds of snaps in different outfits, parking in fancy residential estates that they don’t live in and overall giving the impression over several months that they really do own a six-figure supercar. And of course, there are plenty of places to hunt down a cheap, out-of-season stay at a luxurious five-star hotel, where they can do exactly the same. Then they just pop it all on social media and wait for eager punters to line up to sign up with their “exclusive broker”.

Many brokers offer demo accounts, in which case the “guru” can just repeatedly put on ten trades in a row, come out with winners, then screenshot it and post it on Instagram. If even that is too difficult a task, then it’s a simple matter to fake the picture instead using image manipulation software and post that. With “evidence” of their success sorted out, the trader then promotes their wares with promises of “signals” that have 90% success rates, alongside key phrases such as “no risk” and “guaranteed profit”. Most informed investors realize that if a magic money-making machine did exist it would be owned by a private hedge fund, never to see the light of day. So anyone who actually believes that a 20-year-old student could pull this off is ideal bait – inexperienced, naive and potentially desperate.

The scam also succeeds because of how victims feel when they finally realize they’ve been suckered. Most don’t tell anyone because they feel foolish and want to save face. But also, they know (or rapidly learn) that there is very little the police can do. The banning of the sale of binary options was a step in the right direction. But now the traders of Instagram simply give away their “signals” to trade these options for free. And many bucket-shop brokers are overseas – often they’re not even doing anything illegal in the country in which they operate (although equally often the traders in question will imply that the bucket shop is a reputable UK-based and regulated institution, or lie flat out).

There are even operators who will manipulate the punter’s account in order to make them believe they are winning and then call on them to deposit more money. Then, when the client finally wishes to withdraw, the company goes cold and refers them to the small print, in which it says that the client must trade through an impossible amount of money just to be allowed to withdraw. Other brokers allow the affiliate to widen the spread to maximize their own commission and increase losses for their clients. Advances in 3D printing technologies and the development of new materials with improved physical properties also allow the introduction of radically new, innovative ideas. For example, the Michelin Visionary Concept 'airless' tire technology with the ability to change the tread pattern depending on the weather eliminates punctures, low pressure problems and other driving risks.

Perhaps a fully 3D printed car is a reality in the not too distant future. However, all of the above are the achievements of Western automakers. What is the situation and prospects for the development of additive technologies in India? In this article, we will focus on the advantages of 3D printing , consider the application of innovations in the domestic car market, as well as practical examples of implementation.

 How 3D printing is used in the automobile manufacturing

Additive technologies effectively solve the following problems of automotive manufacturing:

·         creation of functional prototypes;

·         creation of burned-out and lost-wax models for casting ;

·         production of tooling and molds;

·         small-scale production.

Prototyping will optimize production for those enterprises that produce cars (but not assemble ready-made models), as well as manufacturers of auto components supplied to the conveyor.

By means of topological optimization, the designer can define almost any desired geometry of the part and make changes to the design at later stages of development. The 3D model is transferred from CAD to a 3D printer, which quickly prints prototypes, tooling or molds for molding products . This reduces production costs, product development and time-to-market. In particular, the enterprise can set up the operational production of components, timed to coincide with the production of a car.

Accessories and products that meet the required strength characteristics can be produced directly at the factory with just one 3D printer. It will print parts of various nomenclature, which is impossible when using machine tools and other traditional tools.

Technologies mainly used for prototyping:

·         FDM (fused deposition modeling );

·         SLA ( laser stereolithography );

·         SLS ( Selective Laser Sintering ).

Tooling and molds, which are printed from plastics and photopolymer resin , will be several times cheaper than metal ones.

Functional products can also be made using metal 3D printers (for example, using SLM technology). Metal 3D printing is also suitable for small batch production, including the creation of customized products. The latest developments in the field of metal powders have paved the way for the manufacture of lighter, denser, and in some cases more durable parts. Thanks to topological optimization on a 3D printer, it is possible to grow components of complex shapes and textures (with a cellular structure, internal channels, etc.), including all-metal ones, which were previously assembled from several elements.

Western experience: numbers and facts

The Renault Sport Formula One team was one of the first to use 3D printing for prototyping. Today, a small group of engineers are given the opportunity to produce hundreds of parts per week for wind tunnel testing, develop innovative parts for testing and installation on fireballs, and generally accelerate the R&D process. Thanks to SLA and SLS technologies, the  manufacture of complex automotive parts does not take weeks, but only a few hours.

BMW has  3D printed a batch of thousands of metal parts for the BMW i8 Roadster. The convertible soft top of this roadster features an additive manufactured aluminum alloy component with an innovative bionic design that follows natural shapes. The new product has a higher degree of rigidity compared to its analogue, which was produced by injection molding, as well as less weight.

Renowned Italian racing motorcycle manufacturer Aprilia uses FDM printing for  prototyping  to optimize bike design and aerodynamics. For example, in preparation for the motorcycle season, the Aprilia Racing team created a series of PLA gearbox prototypes on a Sharebot QXXL 3D printer   to test and determine the optimal geometry. 3D printing eliminated tooling, time and money, and one final mold was produced from testing.

Company Steeda Autosports , the largest manufacturer of accessories for Ford, the technology uses full-color 3D-printing for prototyping various components - from the cap to the oil can cast tubes cold intake system. The result: Reduced time to market by several weeks, saving $ 3,000 per piece in lower machining and mold costs.

Michelin uses metal 3D printers to insert in a mold for separating the sipes - the most wear-out parts of the tire. The choice of a new technology, instead of the previously used stamping and milling, is due to the fine-grained structure of the metal, better thermal conductivity and, as a consequence, less wear.

[1.2k words (?!), inspired by a conversation with @evaceratops about Fives’ horrible, horrible piloting ‘skills’ - no specific mission or planet. Just a couple of nerds doing their best!]

Rabé ducked around the corner, Fives hot on her heels – and directly behind him, cursing in three languages she knew and four she didn’t, were six extremely angry Zygerrians. Her grip tightened on the tiny disk in her palm.

As one let out a particularly impressive volley of Huttese curses directed towards Rabé’s father, she yelled back to the ARC, “I thought you said the cost was clear!”

“It was!” Fives shouted back, but she could tell he was close to whooping in pure excitment as he leapt ahead of her on the narrow streets, cleaving a path through the confused crowds, his kama snapping madly about his legs. “They must’ve left something at the bar, come back to get it – there were no other patrols scheduled!”

Rabé suppressed a groan as the landing docks came into view, rising tall and imposing above the market square. She pushed herself faster, the cold desert air lashing her hair into a frenzy, “What about a lookout? You were supposed to be the lookout-”

A market stall on her right burst into flames, blast bolts shredding the fabric lining of the tent. Screams erupted around them as red bolts rained around them. Fives spared the tent only a moment’s glance – the owner blessedly out – before he burst into a delighted cackled, “Looks like they’ve found some heat!”

Rabé risked a glance over her shoulder, and sure enough, their pursuers had drawn heavy blasters. Trandoshan make, made for big game hunting. From a distance. And set up on a support. She smirked, raising her eyebrow as they struggled to keep pace. “Lucky for us, they don’t seem to be very good shots!” Her lungs were aching, but the adrenaline snapped through her blood, too. “We have to get out of the way! They might hurt someone!”

“Don’t worry, we’ll give ‘em something to shoot at!” Fives cackled again, cheering them onwards – his bulk cut a clean path for her to follow, and by now the shuffling market customers had scrambled out of the way. Another round of dense blaster fire tore through the stone outer walls of the landing dock, and Rabé ducked through the entrance just before a massive piece collapsed behind her. Their ship, a run-of-the-mill junker, waited serenely for them, entirely unaware of the excitement they were bringing.

“You take the guns – I’m flying!” Fives called, punching the controls to the ramp and not waiting for it to unlock before grabbing her and hoisting her into the slowly widening space. She scrambled upright, the textured grips of the ramp biting into her palms, and ran for the cockpit as he followed, punching the controls for the ramp before it had even hit the ground.

A shot nearly clipped Fives in the shoulder, but he rolled at the last second, jeering at the angry Zygerrians as the scrambled over each other in their attempts to disable the ship. “Are we ready?”

Rabé was already standing at the sights, the mechanism pulled down – the ship’s controls were hot and live. Fives tore off his bucket and leapt into the captain’s chair as blaster fire snapped into their shields, sending showers of sparks and dust down the viewports. He jerked the controls and the ship lurched into the sky, a ‘ramp open’ alarm blaring in their ears.

And not a moment too soon – it seemed the Zygerrians had finally figured out their tech, setting it up, aiming for them – Rabé watched through the scopes as two – wait, where are the –

Another ship roared to life behind theirs. And then another – each piloted by two snarling Zygerrians, their ears pressed flat against their heads.

“…Fives?” She called, trying to keep her voice and grip on the weapons system steady. “We’ve got incoming!”

“I see ‘em!” He looked back at her and flashed her a reassuring grin. “You knock ‘em down, I’ll distract ‘em.”

She barely had time to agree before Fives snapped the controls hard to stern and the nose of their ship obeyed, as he hit the accelerator and they shot upwards. Rabé’s grip on the weapons system was the only thing keeping her from flying to the opposite end of the cockpit. She opened her mouth to yell at him before they listed to port, and her feet found the deck again. It was a lucky thing indeed that she hadn’t eaten much at the bar – the contents of her stomach would probably have been making a reappearance by now.

She forced her back to the viewport, the dizzying view of the marketplace and landing pad and city almost enough to make her collapse, and narrowed her eyes at the two pursuers, both in sleeker, faster starships. She’d modified the guns herself, though – they responded to her every touch, the shots slicing through the air at her command. She managed to clip one, but instead of careening to the surface or bursting into flames, a new astromech model immediately set to work. Rabé’s face twisted in annoyance, even though the little guy was just doing its job. Or maybe her face twisted from sky-sickness – Fives was pressing the ship faster, steeper, harder, she could feel it shaking around them as he pushed it to its limits – and then some.

He jerked starboard and nearly flipped them into a barrel-roll, and Rabé could not have said if that had been intentional or not. “We just gotta make it out of the atmosphere and then we can punch it back to Republic space!”

She also did not know how he could speak and pilot – or what he called piloting – at the same time. She grunted in response and then, giving up on the perfect clean shot, simply held down the activation node and sent a spray of return fire in the direction of their pursuers.

The little astromech couldn’t compete with that. Down one went, and it pushed the other into a frenzy – the pilot trying to match Fives’ reckless flying. He jeered at them before nosediving back down to the surface, and once again, Rabé’s grip on the machine – now white-knuckled and aching – was the only thing that kept her relatively tethered to one place.

The ship shook, complaining, alarms and system malfunctions of every kind blaring as they shot straight up – and then they were free of the planet’s atmosphere with a heart-stopping boom. Fives whooped in triumph and punched in the hyperspace coordinates – and the stars stretched, and they were flying level for the first time in what felt like an eternity.

Fives leaned back in the pilot’s seat and sighed, grinning madly to himself, before he spun around and leapt up for her.

“Did you get it? The intel?” His eyes were bright and shining as his hands found her hips, a wide, madly happy grin plastered on his face. His hands were the only thing keeping her upright – her body hadn’t yet seemed to realize they weren’t still spasmodically ‘flying’ through the atmosphere.

She nodded and held up the little drive and Fives let out a delighted cheer. He leaned in for a triumphant ‘succesful mission completed’ kiss, but instead of her lips, met Rabé’s outstretched hand instead. “…Rabé-?”

“Next time,” she wheezed, looking decidedly dazed and more than a little sky-sick, “I’m flying.”
