Put On Your Raincoats | Tapestry of Passion (Colberg, 1976)

This is another movie I checked out for Sharon Thorpe, and she’s got a doozy of a role here. She plays the Black Widow, an evil dominatrix who goes about murdering sexually adventurous men during sinister sex rituals. So I am inclined to like her already, even before I note that she spends a good amount of her screentime in fetish gear and working that whip like she’s been possessed, and most importantly gets to wear a cape. Her performance is a far cry from the sensitivity of her roles in Sex World, Overnight Sensation and The Infidel, and instead has her in a maniacal, teeth gnashing mode I hadn’t seen her in before. Anyway, it goes to show you how much it helps to have a good actor in such a role because I found her to be very fun here. 

Anyway, it turns out that her one weakness is John Holmes’ gigantic penis, which only makes sense given that this is a Johnny Wadd film, albeit one not directed by Bob Chinn but by Alan Colberg. I’ve mostly been underwhelmed by the Johnny Wadd movies that I’ve seen, and think that they make good cases neither for Chinn’s or Holmes’ best qualities, so I’m pleased to report that this is easily my favourite of the ones I’ve seen. Colberg does not make this an effective noir by any means, but has fun with the concept and really leans into the stereotypical porn angle of Wadd doing the absolute bare minimum of investigation to call himself a detective while beautiful women fall into his lap. It’s definitely a tongue in cheek affair, which you should guess from Thorpe’s performance but also Holmes’ wailing as he plucks a ukulele while wearing a Hawaiian shirt, and the cut to John Leslie and accompanying guitar chord when his sister Lesllie Bovee describes him as a sex freak. Colberg also gets in some nice style, including some decadent mise en scene in Thorpe’s dungeon. 

Pornographically speaking, when you have Thorpe, Bovee, Annette Haven and Desiree West in the cast, you’re in for a good time, although I should note that despite Thorpe playing a dominatrix, the action is relatively vanilla during her sex rituals. So it is not a perfect movie.

MILD SPOILERS BELOW…

Not gonna lie, it’s pretty funny how the rituals go down. Imagine if you show up hoping for kinky sex with Sharon Thorpe, and she spends the whole time trying to get you to drink some weird tea that tastes terrible, and when it turns out the poison in the tea hasn’t killed you, she has her servant come out of nowhere and choke you to death. If you think that sounds like a good time, I must sadly report that the last part is less sexy than it sounds.

This is the final moment of an FPV drone hitting a Russian vehicle. As you can see, the soldier in the back happened to film (or photograph) the scene outside. There would have been images or a video. The moment the drone hit, both cameras were destroyed.
