The FCC is about to give massive internet service providers the power to divide the internet. It is at risk of becoming unrecognizable. A vital global utility that has been a boon to creative and economic freedom for people around the world may be turned into a twisted land of tolls and corporate control.
Those who control the network control the future
The stakes are high. The internet now touches every town, every city, and every single one of us — whether we use it or not. Those who control the network control the future.
The FCC is the current venue for this fight, but Congress will eventually intervene. As telecom expert Susan Crawford argues, the FCC is “being outrageous” to force Congress’ involvement. And both net-neutrality advocates and the telecom industry have asked for lawmakers to act. Advocates believe a law will make net neutrality more durable. But ISPs are betting they’ll be able to write the bill — because they’ve paid for the opportunity.
In March, we published a story that showed contributions from the ISP industry to members of Congress who voted to repeal a landmark FCC privacy rule, opening the door to the sale of customer data. It was one of our most popular stories of the year, and many of you asked why we only published contributions to some members of Congress. Incidentally, every one of the 265 members who voted for the measure in March were Republicans. And many of those same members endorse the effort to end net neutrality.
But it’s fair to want to see monetary influence across all of Congress. While it is clear that alignment with the ISPs is currently drawn along party lines, the industry’s attempt to gain favor with lawmakers is not partisan. Entrenched telecommunications companies liberally spread money and attention to everyone who holds office. Sometimes that influence comes in the form of lavish parties with Olympic athletes and lobbyists, but consistently it comes in the form of contributions to campaigns.
It’s impossible to quantify the overall influence of this powerful industry, but we can chart some of it. Below you will find contributions to individual members of Congress and those members’ leadership PACs, from 1989 to the present day. This money came from the telecommunication industry’s own PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals’ immediate families. This data was prepared for The Verge by The Center for Responsive Politics: an independent, non-partisan nonprofit research group that tracks money in US politics and its effect on elections and public policy.

For the better part of her life she had seen the world through a very different lens. Much of her world consisted of traveling to far flung places all over the globe being carried by her mother or taken gently by the hand and led on some very grand adventure. Her mother wasn't just flashing photo bulbs and long dark hair with mysterious eyes. The voice that she was used to singing her to sleep was vastly different than the one that used to entertain concert goers. They didn't see the side of her that made the very best chocolate chip pancakes at midnight, or the side that made all the hobgoblins in her closet go away with just a stern 'Go to bed, wee beasties!'. Not everyone got to see their mother, godmother and grandmother perform an impromptu concert in the back garden after a few glasses of wine.
"Do you know just how much I love you?"
Her mother had asked her late one night as she tucked Libby deep under the covers of an impossibly soft bed deep in the heart of Rome. All Libby cared was that Mom was there and the tapestry shawl that smelled just like her was wrapped around Babbity Rabbit.
"No...how much?"
"Thiiiiss Muucchh."
Was all Colleen could say before she outstretched her arms much like a bat and enveloped Libby in the warmest of bear hugs. The jangle of her many bracelets and necklaces always made Libby smile.
"Love you, Mama. Even beyond infinity."
"Love you too, Libby baby. Sleep tight."
With a kiss and in a cloud of warm amber Libby fell into a drowsy dose. The nightlight aunt Helene and uncle Joey had sent all the way from Sweden flickered on merrily enveloping the five year old in a familiar homey glow. Unbeknownst to her the world she had once known was rapidly changing. The Colleen Sheehan being witnessed this evening was an unfamiliar one as the 'Mom' version was as familiar to little Libby as the back of her own hand.
"I just got off the phone with your mom...Colly he's in good spirits. He knows you and Lib are headed home."
Schooled features so fine they could almost be cut from marble swirled toward him almost pinning Jack to the spot.
"You're coming with us, right?"
Jack Donnelly was never one to lie, bend the truth, yes but never outright lie. Especially to his wife and mother of his only child.
"Y-yes. I just need to finish packing some things back at the house and setting up someone to watch Angus and Bon."
The mention of the Donnelly family's Weimaraner duo and Libby's dearest companions besides the ancient orange tabby named Cornelius at Libby's insistence as to "That's what he told me his name is, Mummy."
"She doesn't know he's sick...sick. I mean she knows Grandpa Jim's not feeling well and that there are some changes at his and Granny's house but that doesn't mean she has to be afraid. Maybe...maybe this is a mistake. It's too much."
The flutter of her hands and the tremble in her bottom lip were Col's tell. She was crumbling. Her world was falling apart and she had kept it together for so long and had kept spirits high all the way around that now the fatigue was setting in. Jack wasn't going to be the one to tell his wife of four years that her father's mental state was fading in and out like a candle flame. Mostly due to the use of morphine to keep the pain at bay and the masses pressing at odd angles. He didn't need to be the one to remind her when it hit her daily. When she wasn't trying to do small shows whenever her manager booked her she was home at the rambling Murphy compound nicknamed 'Shangri-La.' splitting time between her parents place and their own rambling place in the Canyon known as The Lodge.
"Colly he keeps saying he wants to go home."
Colleen bit her lip for a moment and sighed as she grabbed the last of her things and shoved it into the oversized duffel bag.
"I take it you know what that means?"
"Yes...he wants to go back to Gloucester. He was born in a tiny town just outside it called Sloughbridge. He and my mom still have the family house out there. My Great Grandfather built it. That's where he wants to be....I mean he was born there. So it makes sense."
"I've got to call Helene and Joey and...my mom...."
Passing her a hand rolled cigarette and a glass of red wine Jack met her eyes.
"You need to take a moment with these two things I'm offering you and take in the night sky on the balcony. Just for a minute."

Songbird with Broken Wings verse:
Mary Colleen Sheehan-Murphy
DOB: July 11
POB: Gloucester MA at Manderley Bay House
Parents: James William Murphy & Minerva Joy Sheehan
Occupation: Singer/Songwriter ( currently )
Ballet Dancer ( formerly )
Grandparents: ( Paternal )
James William Murphy II ( an architect & ship builder ) & Lindy Isabel Delancey ( a concert pianist )
Grandparents: ( Maternal )
Royce Kelton 'Lefty' Sheehan ( a successful session musician ) & Mary Katherine O'Reilly ( a classically trained opera singer )
Given her huge heart and her free spirit Col's found herself going down the aisle a time or two.
Husband #1: Charles Thomas Wilbury Jr. aka The Angel ( deceased five years into their marriage. A senseless car accident. ) - Part of the jam/cover band Blackberry Junction which morphed into two successful solo careers for them both as well as the newly named Full Tilt Band. It just seemed natural that they would marry since they were on the same wave length.
Husband #2: Nigel Ashley Craven aka The Mistake ( married for four years and the divorce took FOREVER ) Cashed in on the fact that Col needed stability after such a loss and saw nothing but dollar signs. He was also her manager at one point in time and nearly bled her dry. She nearly had a break down over this man. While he wasn't physically abusive the mental cruelty and endless touring took it's toll on her.
Husband #3: Jack 'Black Jack' Donnelly AKA The Drummer - has been with Col since day one as part of her backing band. Worked very very closely with Charlie in the studio so it was a given that these two would get together. Her absolute rock and her heart. Father to Liberty 'Libby' June Charlotte Donnelly.

@vegaprose ( Hello there Lovely! )
My headcanon is that John Joseph Flannery is and always will be Colleen Murphy’s guardian Angel. He’s taken many forms in all of her verses and has done his very very best to keep any kind of harm from befalling our girl.
*Bonus Canon* Col was pregnant at the time of Jackie’s passing so now he’s working double time to keep both of them safe.
Double Bonus: Whenever Jack Donnelly ( Gods & Monsters verse ) is busy Col travels with Jackie as protection. He divulges to her late one night as they wait for Donnelly that Jackie knew a girl back in American that could have been Col’s twin. Sadly she passed and he often wonders if he’ll see her again.

It was then, after seeing both of them fed and happy on the chaos of blankets that Colleen realized that Jack was going to be most tickled when he came home from that mini tour and find that she’d added to the family. Their cat, Nancy, isn’t pleased with the arrangement. She’s currently hiding in the kitchen pantry with her catnip toys. She’s also left a warning by the dog dishes. A headless mouse.
@aristobun Our little fur baby has a friend over for a few days, so far they’re wonderful.  I welcome name ideas for Col’s newest addition to the Donnelly family 😊💜

Aha! Just read your reply on the Second Home and I am over the moon! Honestly I’m quite tempted to create a verse where Frank and Jackie are adopted by Jack and Colleen as either children or teenagers and given a loving stable home just to see how Frank and not to mention Jack would flourish in that sort of environment. I may need help finding FCs for the newest Donnellys ;-) I’m also so so very happy that you enjoyed the piece! *hugs* Be sure to tell Helene that she has full godmother status over Jack and Col’s brood. <3
