disappointed doesn’t come remotely close to my feelings for the cofe at the moment. welby does need to go, but we must also remember not to scapegoat him and forget the six currently serving bishops and thirty clergy who were also complacent - don’t be fooled into thinking that this is one disappointing abc - this is an institutional, endemic issue. furthermore, we must not lose sight of the real people at the heart of this. rows over resignation and and policy may be easier to stomach, but when we disregard the victims of the church of england, because that’s what they are, we find ourselves complacent too. prayers for the victims, and of course also welby and others. may god give us the courage to be as critical of our institutions as christ was, and the compassion and love for each other that this church will need to get through this.

I was just in D*nkin (because Boston and also because I NO LONGER WORK FOR THE σταρβυκς overlords!! They can’t control me!! Not that they could while I was there or even cared… I just felt like I couldn’t be a… conniving secretive traitor, at the time. I DID steal from them, I will say. Not as much as I’d like to!! But some! Anyway—) and there was this central-casting cookie cutter white woman™️ with neat straight blond hair and a shrill, commanding voice that was SO grating to hear in front of me, and I don’t know why it gets on my nerves so much but she asked for her beverage (iced coffee with oat milk I think) but she said “Could I just have [coffee]?” Like, no!! You don’t get to decide that what you request is “just” anything!! Undercutting the labor that D*nkin baristas do isn’t unusual by any means, but NOTHING could be further from the truth. Appreci them, Ms. Lady!!! Appreci them!! While you slurp your absurd beverage! Don’t you DARE feel oh-so-superior when that’s backed up by NOTHING!! Or… else!!! Or else!!!!!!!!!

Former CofE Vicar Charged with Historic Abuse
Jonathan Fletcher, an 81-year-old former vicar of Emmanuel Church Wimbledon, has been charged with eight counts of indecent assault and one count of grievous bodily harm with intent. The charges pertain to alleged offenses committed between 1973 and 1999, a period spanning more than two decades during which Fletcher was a prominent figure in the conservative evangelical community.
Tumblr media
Fletcher’s tenure at Emmanuel Church began in 1982, and he served there until his retirement in 2012. His position as a vicar and leader within the Church of England placed him in a significant role within the religious community, where he was known for his influential conservative views. The allegations against him have surfaced decades after the purported offenses, raising serious concerns about historical abuses within the church.
The charges against Fletcher are detailed and severe, including multiple counts of indecent assault and a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent. The alleged crimes are said to have occurred over a long period, spanning nearly three decades, which has amplified the gravity of the situation. The historical nature of these allegations highlights ongoing issues within religious institutions regarding the handling of abuse cases.
Fletcher is set to appear at Kingston Crown Court on August 7. The court proceedings will determine the extent of the charges and whether Fletcher will face further legal consequences. As of now, he has been granted bail, but the court date marks a significant step in the legal process against him.
The Diocese of Southwark has expressed its commitment to providing support to those affected by the alleged abuses and has been actively cooperating with the ongoing police investigation. The diocese’s statement reflects its dedication to addressing the historical allegations and ensuring that justice is served.
In a statement from Emmanuel Church Wimbledon, where Fletcher served for three decades, the church confirmed its awareness of the charges against the former vicar. “We recently learned that Jonathan Fletcher is being prosecuted for several historical offenses against an adult,” the statement read. The church emphasized that Fletcher retired in 2012 and no longer holds any authority to minister within the Church of England.
This case has resonated beyond the local community, highlighting broader concerns about the handling of abuse within religious institutions. The Church of England, along with other religious organizations, has faced scrutiny over its response to historical abuse cases and the measures in place to protect vulnerable individuals.
The Diocese of Southwark’s support for the investigation and the individuals affected by Fletcher’s alleged actions underscores the church’s commitment to transparency and accountability. The case also serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing historical allegations of abuse and ensuring that such matters are thoroughly investigated.
The outcome of the legal proceedings against Fletcher will be closely watched by the public and religious communities alike. The case not only addresses the specific allegations against Fletcher but also reflects ongoing efforts to confront and resolve issues of abuse within religious organizations. As the legal process unfolds, the focus remains on achieving justice for the victims and ensuring that such abuses are addressed with the seriousness they warrant.

Shakespeare was baptised in his local church, Holy Trinity in Stratford-upon-Avon & the parish register documents his involvement in the life of the church, with the births of his three children & the burials of family members. His last will & testament delivers more than a formal statement. His testimony is spiritual, personal & biblical, claiming salvation, ‘through the only merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour, to be made partaker of life everlasting.
