NARUTO NINJA MILITARY SYSTEM BREAKDOWN
Naruto Military System
Disclaimer
As a Naruto fan and a former member of the Armed forces the way the Ninja military is handled makes no sense. Now I understand that Kishimoto has no experience with the military and that it would slow the story a lot by having it be like a real military and not a village of mercenaries.
Genin Rank
As fresh new military members joining the ninja forces, they should have been treated to the shock and awe treatment. And what that entails is a series of intense isolated training away from home and privileges as a way to get them out of both the clan and civilian mindset.
How I would have done it is the following.
Academy student age 6 to 12
After graduating from the academy, the graduates are shipped to a Genin basic training for 12 weeks of intensive training which includes not only combat but also, they will also learn basic living and survival skills.
1. Physical conditioning
2. learning chakra control exercise
3. combat
4. Basic living skills (cooking, cleaning, etc)
6. Camping
7. Sentry duty
8. Military law
9. Military dress
10. Teamwork
This is a Vital point in their ninja careers as it is to set the foundation for the rest of their careers. And as such they must have their civilian mindset beaten out of them. It is also important they follow the military dress code to learn and maintain basic discipline.
3. They will wear a military uniform at all times until they complete the squadron training program. They may wear civilian clothing when not on duty at their (JSC) discretion or when on leave. They would have to maintain a military dress uniform for ceremonies.
Standard military Uniform
Black or Blue Combat sandals
Black combat pants
Black combat shirt long or short sleeve
Ninja head protector on forehead
Standard Ninja combat Vest
Kunai/shuriken holster
Identifying squad armbands (Genin only)
Banned items For Military uniforms
Any type of non-military symbols including Clan symbols or and type of advertisement
Alcohol
Any type of porn
Or drugs or any other type of contraband
1Genin Training Squadron (GTS) Breakdown
JSC-( Jonin Senior Commander)
4 JTI- ( Jonin Training Instructors)
8 CSS- (Chunnin Support Squads)
16 Genin
they would then be assigned to a GTS which is comprised of 29 squad members led by a Jonin Commander in charge of a 4 man squad of JTI’S (Jonin training instructors) and assisted by two squads of CSS (Chunnin Support Squads) as to prevent favoritism and to teach them how to work in multiple different combinations of a 4 man squad. And to also allow for the Jonin to truly see what the best combination of a squad could truly be.
While stationed in a GTS they will be subjected to the highest level of discipline, and as such the first 4 weeks of being stationed they will have their quarters inspected for cleanliness and contraband, they will have uniform inspections daily. they wouldalso be punished for any misconduct including assault and sexual harassment.
Week 1
Living placement- During the first week they will be assigned and moving into the training Squadron compound in shared rooms of 2 and be taught daily tasks such as latrine duty or cooking detail while also learning the rules of the Squadron
Training
in depth testing and review of all the individual skills.
week’s 2-3
Training
will be set to basic physical conditioning and training of ninja skills, while subject to intense discipline.
week 4
Training squad they will be from this point on be put on a Bi-weekly squad rotation where every 2 weeks they will change up the figuration of the squad and assign them to a different JTI during which time they will train in adaptability and teamwork with multiple individuals.
Mission Squad They will also be assigned to a Mission Squad that will also alternate bi-weekly in which case they will be assigned to one of the 4 JTI and during that time they must complete at least 12 D rank missions under each individual Jonin instructor. In order to advance to C rank missions.
After Week 4 if they have shown competency in both maintaining military discipline and following orders they will be allowed leave time outside of the compound but will still have to stick to a curfew and may not stay out unless they have an overnight or weekend pass.
C-Rank Missions
they will not be assigned a (C) rank mission until they have completed all the required individual d level missions and have performed under all 4 training instructors a level of competency.
After Graduating to C-Rank missions For the first 6 C-rank missions they will be accompanied by 2 Chunnin from the CSS to make sure if they are needed for support in case of an emergency.
Graduating From GTS
Genin will graduate from the GTS regardless if they make Chunnin when they reach the age of 15 years old and at which time they they will be placed in the regular Genin Corps and or if they showed exceptional skills during their time in GTS and have completed the requirements, they will be allowed to take the Chunnin selection exam.
After turning the legal Military age of 15 they will be allowed to live by themselves and not be forced to abide by the strict regulation of the GTS but will still be subjected to the standard military law and will be expected to maintain military discipline when on missions and duty.
During this time they will be promoted to the Rank of full Genin.
While assigned to the GTS they are of the rank of Tokubetsu Genin
Chunnin selection Exam
Chunnin in order to promote to Chunnin one must complete the following requirements.
1.They will not be allowed to go register for the Chunnin exam until they turn the legal age of 15, as the laws of the Shodaime state that no child may participate in any capacity in any type of warfare or wartime exercise.
2. they must have at least 2 years of experience in the rank of Genin
3. they must have completed the required number of D-rank missions as well as the required number of C-rank missions both aided and unaided by a Chunnin support squad
4. All jounin instructors must agree that you are ready to take the Chunnin exam.
5. You must be able to complete a Chunnin exam Pretest, to see if you are indeed ready to take the test.

Okay, I’ve been meaning to do this for a while but kept getting derailed. Thankfully I’m fully caught up on Rise (though it took me forever) and I was able to mostly sort out the in-universe order for the episodes.
Because fun fact-- something I noticed way back in season 1-- is that the episodes weren’t released in in-universe order. This was true on cable, this has held true on netflix and hbo-max paramount+ (I goofed, oops), and while [turtlepedia] does have them listed in tv broadcast order and has the episode production codes listed, neither of those entirely match up with the various in-episode context clues for what order things happen in.
And believe me, some of those context clues, those in-episode “signposts” are subtle enough to be blink-and-you’ll-miss-it details (like the fact that the background video for Donnie and Mikey in Hypno! Part Deux! implies that it’s happening at the same time as Repomantis). Needless to say it’s taken a lot of work and a lot of paying attention. And thankfully season 2 wasn’t as all over the place (mainly due to more of the episodes not having any distinct signposts beyond things that made it obvious they took place after season 1).
(I’ve done my best to get it as nailed down as possible. Episodes that occur at the same time are listed on the same bulletpoint in recommended watching order.)
So good news if you’re like me and you’d like to watch the episodes in in-universe order, because this is that list!
Without further ado, I give you:
The In-Universe Rise Episode Timeline
Season 1:
Mystic Mayhem
Origami Tsunami
Donnie’s Gifts
Smart Lair
War And Pizza
Newsworthy
Repomantis & Hypno! Part Deux!
Down With The Sickness (Due to not really having any more than one possible signpost, this one could take place either before or after the previous point or The Purple Jacket. I don’t think it’s any later than that, but it’s debatable.)
The Purple Jacket
Minotaur Maze
The Longest Fight
The Fast And The Furriest
Stuck On You
Hot Soup: The Game
Mascot Melee
The Gumbus
Shell In A Cell
Pizza Pit
Bug Busters
Mrs. Cuddles (Like Down With The Sickness this one has very few signposts, only two that I spotted and one of those is debatable, but it does take place sometime after The Fast And The Furriest.)
Al Be Back
The Evil League of Mutants
Late Fee
Bullhop
Portal Jacked!
Mind Meld
Nothing But Truffle
Warren And Hypno, Sitting In A Tree
Shadow Of Evil
You Got Served
Operation: Normal
The Mutant Menace
Sparring Partner (This is another one where the placement isn’t entirely certain, but it is after Origami Tsunami, The Fast and the Furriest, and Shadow of Evil.)
How To Make Enemies And Bend People To Your Will
Mystic Library (This is another one where there aren’t enough signposts to be sure where this one belongs exactly, but this was my best guess.)
The Purple Game
Jupiter Jim Ahoy!
Cloak and Swaggert
Man Vs. Sewer
The Ancient Art of Ninja Hide and Seek
Turtle-dega Nights: The Ballad of Rat Man
One Man’s Junk
Snow Day (Yet another one where the time placement isn’t certain and this is my best guess, though it does take place sometime after Late Fee and possibly Jupiter Jim Ahoy!)
Insane in the Mama Train
End Game
Season 2
Many Unhappy Returns
Todd Scouts
Goyles, Goyles, Goyles
Flushed But Never Forgotten
Lair Games
Breaking Purple
Repairin’ the Baron
Air Turtle
Pizza Puffs
Sidekick Ahoy!
The Hidden City Job
Always Be Brownies
Mystery Meat
Donnie vs. Witch-Town, Raph’s Ride-Along, Hidden City’s Most Wanted, Bad Hair Day
Fists of Furry
The Clothes Don’t Make the Turtle
Battle Nexus: New York
Finale Part 1: E-Turtle Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Finale Part 2: Shreddy or Not
Finale Part 3: Anatawa Hitorijanai
Finale Part 4: Rise
Rise of the TMNT, the movie
Go forth and enjoy!
(And if anyone wants my rationalization on any of this, just hit me up and I can go in detail.)

The (hopefully intended) viewing order of...
So recently, in preparation for the upcoming movie, and because it’s on Netflix, I decided to watch Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
However, as I watched it, I noticed that one aspect of the viewing experience still hasn’t been fixed: It’s out of order.
This might not be a deal breaker for a lot of people, but it irks me since I feel like there’s a lot of careful effort to make sure much of the timeline and rules of the setting make sense in the show.
At first I checked Wikipedia, which seemed to indicate it was in proper airing order, but then decided to check TMNTpedia, which had entirely different production codes.
While Wikipedia does cite a source for it, I’m not totally certain I trust it (due to it being a fairly obscure TV schedule site), and I think the order on TMNTpedia itself makes more sense, though it still has some issues I think.
So I’m gonna give my own proposed watch order for at least Season 1 (Season 2 aired mostly in order, likely because Nickelodeon already decided to cancel it). It’ll largely be the same as TMNTpedia’s Production Order, though some will be moved around.
Mystic Mayhem
Origami Tsunami
Newsworthy
War and Pizza
Donnie’s Gifts
Minotaur Maze
Down with the Sickness
Repo Mantis
Hypno!: Part Deux
The Fast and the Furriest
Mascot Melee
Bug Busters
Shell in a Cell
The Longest Fight
The Gumbus
Ms. Cuddles
Al Be Back
Stuck on You
The Purple Jacket
Pizza Pit
Smart Lair
Hot Soup: The Game
The Evil League of Mutants
Late Fee
Bullhop
Nothing But Truffle
Turtle-Dega Nights: The Ballad of Rat Man
Shadow of Evil
Mind Meld
Portal Jacked
Warren & Hypno, Sitting in a Tree
Sparring Partner
Mystic Library
Operation: Normal
How To Make Enemies and Bend People To Your Will
You Got Served
The Purple Game
Man Vs. Sewer
The Ancient Art of Ninja Hide and Seek
The Mutant Menace
One Man’s Junk
Snow Day
Cloak and Swaggart
Jupiter Jim Ahoy
Insane in the Mama Train
End Game
As I mentioned, I mainly adhered to the production order shown on TMNTpedia (I don’t expect I did it perfectly), but changed the order of some episodes since some of their placements made no sense to me:
Origami Tsunami has been placed as episode 2 due to that episode introducing Lou Jitsu and the Foot Clan, and also establishes the Turtles deciding to be heroes. (Thanks, @magicalspacedragon!)
Repo Mantis and Hypno!: Part Deux actually take place concurrently, hence why the two are close together here.
The Fast and the Furriest is before Mascot Melee due to the former introducing the Turtle Tank; in airing and supposedly production order, this resulted in an episode featuring the Turtle Tank before its formal introduction.
On the note of The Fast and the Furriest, for some reason Nickelodeon chose to air this episode before Minotaur Maze, the episode that introduces Senor Hueso and the pizzeria he works in, Run of the Mill Pizza.
I put The Gumbus before Al Be Back, since Baxter has an extended cameo in the latter episode. It isn’t very noticeable anyway, but for consistency and character introduction’s sake, I put it before.
Episodes not mentioned on this list (which again only covers Season 1) are Flushed But Not Forgotten and Sewer Games, which had the dubious honor of being aired before Season 1 finished; both episodes are from Season 2 (as evidenced by changes to the opening, most prominently Shredder replacing Draxum), but were aired as a Halloween Special in the show's second year. Netflix will likely correctly mark this as a Season 2 episode if it ever gets Season 2, as it was not included in Season 1's release on the platform.
I haven’t tried this order out for myself (I kinda gave up on the idea of watching it in any sort of chronological order around the time me and my sister reached Shadow of Evil on Netflix, and it would take a lot of time). I hope that the order shown here works, but it might need further nudging.
Here’s hoping the upcoming movie is good!

Characters who are close slowly finding out about each other’s superhero identities in funny ways
Pigella picking up something massive and like 10x heavier than her and chucking it
I really want one of these heroes’ tools to be a comically large anime-style weapon, but alas I don’t think they’d do it
Season finale boss fight featuring all the new heroes, which is totally gonna happen at some point, but it would look really busy on screen to have them all running around at once, so I’d split them into smaller teams based on their skills to carry out specific parts of Ladybug’s Epic 36-Step Plan™️. It would make for a satisfying “oh yeah, it’s all coming together” montage and also give us some unique character interactions.
Ladybug picking unique combo teams of new heroes based on their skills to fight specific strong villains
Alya starting a school paper and getting the whole team in on it. I love the episodes where the class does one big project together, they’re so cute.
Someone/a group getting akumatized on purpose to disobey Hawkmoth and take advantage of their akuma’s power for a noble goal
Episode from the POV of a boring background character detailing how the life of the average Parisian is affected by LB and CN. Unreliable scheduling, monster traffic jams, the sheer embarrassment of getting got by an akuma...
I want an animal to get akumatized. Someone’s dog who feels lonely when their favorite human gets a new, demanding job and turns into a terrifying Cerberus beast or something.
Mayor Bourgeois allocates some taxpayer dollars into a LB bank account to support her, and she has to make the very important decision on whether to save it for a real emergency or buy 17 hamburgers.
Okay part of me doesn’t want to make kwami/future hero predictions in case I accidentally come up with something way cooler than what will really happen and then be disappointed, but the other part of me is like hee hoo predikshun. So don’t expect these to actually happen lol.
I won’t talk about Multimouse because we kinda know everything about her, but she looks cute and it’s nice to see two heroes who aren’t super skinny.
The silhouette of Minotaurox in the intro doesn’t offer a lot of insight other than his epic horns. I have no idea what his tool might be. His costume looks to be pretty simple/practical, though, which is in line with Ivan’s character. I heard a theory that his power will be increasing in size, and it makes sense looking at Stoneheart and the pattern of flipping the characters’ flaws on their head, but that sounds kind of boring to me, especially compared to all the other creative abilities.
Tigresse’s silhouette makes me think her design will be awesome. Her tail looks like it might be her tool. It kind of resembles Amethyst’s whip from SU so maybe she can use it to grab things like Ladybug does with her yo-yo. I heard a theory that her power will be invisibility which I support because it takes the flaw that turned Juleka into Reflekta (wanting to be invisible out of insecurity) and makes it powerful like the stealth of a tiger.
From the silhouette, Caprikid looks a bit like a beginner’s Trollhunters cosplay, but I’m sure he’ll be cool. I’ve seen people argue whether he’s Nate or Marc and I’m positive he’s Marc (making Nate CC) so if anyone asks for an explanation I’ll make the comprehensive post on why. He’s holding his tool, and I’ve seen debate over which direction it’s in. If he’s holding it pointed up it looks like a giant calligraphy brush, but I think he’s holding it pointed down and the “brush” is just a decoration on the end. I’ve heard a theory that it’s a shepherd’s cane which is my favorite one. Personal idea here: I’d make his power telekinesis. Pretty basic, but I can imagine it being very useful for the type of scenarios we see in the show without it being OP. I like the idea of using a cane to “shepherd” something through the air. This could reflect Reverser’s desire for control, but flip it to be more collected and useful.
I fully support Coq Courage’s ninja pants, they are simply Correct. It’d be cool if his tool was a bow and arrow, and that seems like a pretty popular theory. The shape to the left of his torso looks like it might be a quiver but it’s probably just his other arm. Thumb rings are used in archery, but what little we’ve seen of the miraculous (disguised on Marinette and Chloe) shows a different type of ring. Still tho. Also get ready for my crazy never-gonna-happen idea: the bow can turn into a hang glider. Roosters can fly, but not super well/freely, which could translate to gliding. It’d add some versatility to the way the heroes move around since a lot of the temporary ones can only run, and it would let him reach places LB might not be able to. I’ve heard a theory that his power will be supersonic voice which could contrast how Nathaniel is bad at communicating and quiet until he gets mad and blows up.
Orikko might be the kwami of illumination. Roosters are associated with the sun and Evillustrator’s power was sourced from light. At first I thought his transformation words might be “sunrise” and “sunset” but someone said the activation code could be “rise and shine” which sounds awesome.
Traquemoiselle, believe it or not, is actually in the intro, she’s just hidden at the very top and only a snippet of the head is showing. All we know is that she has round dog ears. Barrk is surprisingly one of the more fleshed-out kwamis as of now, having a few solid lines of characterization in Furious Fu. Kwamis are usually yin-yang to their holder, so Barrk fits Sabrina perfectly, being loyal yet independent while Sabrina is loyal and an absolute doormat. No clue about her tool. Her power is kinda in the name: tracking. Maybe she can track down some one specific thing of her choice, but maybe she can sniff out akumas. As seen in Dark Owl and Gang of Secrets, Hawkmoth can be creative with akuma placement, so she can probably save the team from some close calls.
I have no theories for the transformation words of the other kwamis. Ziggy or Stompp could include “horns” or “charge” and Roaar “stripes” but I can’t think of any phrase including those words that isn’t too similar to an existing one. There are some phrases based on powers, though, not the animal. Or maybe they’ll just give up and give us another iteration of “Sass, scales slither”.
I think the theme for one of these remaining new heroes might be “assertion”. A lot of them struggle with that as their civilian selves, and the animals that are left can all be associated with independence/dominance, not that the animal traits always play into what the heroes are.
Ok last one, long one: in season 3, Luka’s main traits were “cool and nice” which doesn’t make for an interesting, complex major character, and at first he seemed like the perfect love interest, but from an outside perspective the extent of his kindness is kind of disturbing. I’m hoping they can flip this around and turn it into a character flaw where he has practically no boundaries, and it turns into a problem. Maybe he could agree to run random errands for the background characters for nothing in return, and at first it’s just him being nice, but later people start seeing his help as an obligation. They get peeved when he’s unavailable one day and get akumatized into a “boss rush” of classic akumas, effectively trapping and forcing him to help them. Then Tigresse Pourpe comes and helps save the day, expanding on Juleka and Luka’s relationship. The resolution can teach kids that putting yourself first isn’t necessarily selfish, and that sitting back and letting people take advantage of your kindness isn’t heroic.
There’s probably some stuff I forgot which I can put in a different post later, but lmk if you want a separate post about any of these things in more detail! This was just me rambling out all my new hyperfixation thoughts. Also if anyone uses any of the hypotheticals/scenarios as a prompt I’d love to see it.

“Dude, you’re like, an asshole.”
Aka which of the characters are assholes and which ones aren’t.
Judged on my completely unbiased scale of which characters I find intolerable and which ones I have a soft spot for, so take this with a grain of salt as canon.
Disclaimer: This is a joke list and very few of these are thoughtful placements.
Minor Assholes.
Kind of a variable category. Mostly characters who are assholes in the sense of like. Being terrible people, but at least they like, have morals and shit. There’s a lot of variation here.
Sonic-Already a hot take. Listen. Maybe he does murder sometimes but like. He’s somehow less intolerable than the major dipshits below. And at least he has like, morals and shit. You think Metal Knight has that? No way.
Garou-Once again, suuuper not objective. He’s 100% an asshole, but he’s got a pretty strict moral code and lines he would not cross, and his end goal is good. I do wonder how he was planning on becoming a symbol of fear without killing anyone though. Like I’d say he’s an “ends will justify the means” kind of guy but like...his plan was to scare people into banding together and killing him and...not killing anyone himself? I’m confused and he is too. Anyways he’s somehow less of an asshole than some of the other characters.
Atomic Samurai-He’s arrogant, but he’s not a bad person. I love clowning on this man with strict morals and a massive ego.
Flashy Flash-Kinda a mix of Sonic and Atomic Samurai. Like he’s a dick, but boy is it fun to watch him call people out (looking at you Death Gatling). I do think his moral compass is more fucked up than Sonics is though. Does that make me dumb? Has Sonic’s ass rotted my brain? Idk I can’t speak to the webcomic bc I know we get more of his and Sonic’s backstory there but ik vaguely about the Ninja Village.
Watchdog Man-He makes everyone sit at a professional meeting with him while in his fursuit. He eats like a dog. Subjecting people to your fursona 24/7 is rude, man.
Major Assholes.
You know when Sonic “I-assassinate-people-and-play-bodyguard-for-the-dregs-of-society” One Punch Man and Garou are minor assholes, we’ve got some heavy hitters down the line.
Metal Knight-This one is self-explanatory. Fuck this guy.
Drive Knight-A wise man once said “he’s the kind of guy who’ll send you an NSFW link at work then report you for clicking on it.”
Amai Mask-Listen, [webcomic spoiler] or not, he’s an asshole. I don’t care that he’s sad, man. He’s still a dick.
Puri Puri Prisoner-We all know why.
Blast-This bitch really just fucking noped out of hero work bc he does it for fun. How many people have died bc this blank faced fuck decided he’d rather go take a vacation to OPM!Six Flags instead of idk, helping people?
Not an Asshole.
Mumen Rider-Does not have a mean bone in his body. We all know he is the king of good samaritans.
Tank Top Master-Almost put him in minor asshole bc of Tank Top Tiger and Black Hole, but the rest of the group seems chill. He’s a genuinely kind guy.
King-Kind of dickish for hiding him being a fraud but he’s good.
Pig God-Minds his business. Gentle. Seems to genuinely care about Child Emperor’s safety/concerns.
Child Emperor-He’s baby.
Bang-His advice can sound a bit like a fake deep quote from pinterest, but he means well and he’s not hurting anyone.
Bomb-Just a supportive bro.
An Asshole, but Has a Good Heart
Tatsumaki-I cannot defend Tatsumaki’s behavior, but I love her and she clearly cares about civilians’ safety. She’s an asshole but she’s doing her best.
Fubuki-Beneath that social climbing, she’s got a good heart too. She just lets her self-doubt control her and ends up being an asshole to others because of it. I mean, she tried to kill or at least seriously maim Saitama.
Genos-He’s mean as fuck to anyone who isn’t Saitama or Dr. Kuseno. And it’s not just because he has a hard time reading social cues, he like. chooses to be rude to Fubuki, and stuff like that. He genuinely cares about doing what’s right though, he’s got a lot of compassion for the defenseless.
Not an Asshole, just Grumpy.
Saitama-Stays in his lane. Does right by people for the sake of doing good. Just wants to get a good deal.
Zombieman-He just wants to take a nap, but this annoying fucking idol won’t shut his trap. So if a few sharp insults come out every once in a while, can you really blame him?
Metal Bat-Full of rage and love for his little sister. Has a lot of bravado and an ego, but will throw all that away to make Zenko happy. Rescues cats in his free time. Apparently is a pacifist despite his entire fighting strategy being braining monsters with a baseball bat.
The Narrative Surrounding This Character Makes Me Uncomfortable and Their Actions Qualify Them as an Asshole But the Narrative Doesn’t Acknowledge That.
Superalloy Darkshine-They really should have changed his backstory.

End of the Year pt. 3
Games of the year for 2020!
Ghostrunner. I mentioned it before but I only heard about this game because of some post calling attention to it when Cyberpunk got delayed. If it weren't for that bit of serendipity I think this game probably would've just flown past my radar (like so many others). The general gameplay is phenomenal, the movement and combat feels exceptional. Wall running and slicing through generic mooks is an utter joy to do, and when the game gives you the grappling hook the sheer joy of the game skyrockets. Some of the options the game gives you for actions outside combat are kind of a dud, and when it introduces giant enemy robots the game takes a bit of a nosedive. But by and large the game is well worth playing.
Crusader Kings III. I don't really mess around with the 4X games, I don't have the patience to wrap my head around what they want me to do. But I found myself really enjoying this, I like trying to use the political aspect to destroy other factions. It's a really fun mess around game, even if I do usually make disastrous choices that results in my entire lineage being assassinated.
Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise. First things first, this game is absolutely terrible to play. It is constantly falling apart, and if you play it for longer than two to three hours at a time it will just start dying. The framerate almost never hits a consistent thirty and dips frequently, and if you put the Switch in rest mode without closing the game it will horribly desync every single cutscene until you close the game. That said I can't help but love this game, but that is almost entirely because of the story in the game. This is without a doubt one of the best written games to come out last year, and is a deeply enthralling narrative. It also provides some small nods to D4 which I appreciated since that game will never get finished. If you like the first Deadly Premonition you'll most likely enjoy what DP2 does, just be aware that it will be a deeply flawed experience actually playing the game. I really wouldn't blame anyone who just watched the story bits on the internet instead of actually playing the game. This was my fourth most played game on the switch last year apparently.
Helltaker. I liked the puzzles, and the designs for the demons. Pandemonica is the best girl.
Resident Evil 3 Remake. I played this game to completion eleven times. I have hundred percented it on two different systems. If you're one of those who thinks every game has to be a minimum of twelve hours to get the value out of your games you'll probably hate this. I love it because I love trying to get my runs in this game below one hour. The game is noticeably shorter than Resident Evil 2 remake, and has a lot less to offer, but I still love this game. I find the gameplay to be immensely satisfying even if I find it to be a bit of a slog playing it on the hardest difficulties.
Granblue Fantasy Versus. It's fun. I really wish the online was livelier than it is, but that's just how it goes sometimes I guess. It has one of the best rosters of characters of any fighting game I've played, and is very gratifying to play. I like the pseudo beat em up mode that it offers even if it is sort of basic. This might sound really lame but really I just like the fact that there's an actual game of Granblue to play. Even if it is a mostly dead fighting game.
Spelunky 2. I really didn't know how they were going to make a sequel to Spelunky. How do you improve on a game that is fundamentally perfect? Turns out you just crank the difficulty up past any reasonable expectation and include multiple new and inventive ways to ensure your players death. Even if some of the backpacks are provably weaker than the jetpack I appreciate the game offering the power pack that makes your bombs bigger and gives you a fire whip even if it does nothing else. I also really like the branching paths they give you, so you're not just running the same four environments over and over. Now you can choose two different paths so you can run at bare minimum EIGHT environs repeatedly. The metal shield is a godsend when you decide to engage in a life of crime because of how the bullets just bounce off it taking care of violent shopkeepers. I love this game even if I hate it so much.
Final Fantasy VII Remake. I really didn't expect this game to be as great as it was. I went in with relatively low expectations but came away absolutely in love with everything that it had to offer me storywise. This really just snuck up on me as being one of the absolute games I had played this year. The four characters that make up the party are some of the best written and were utterly delightful. Most of the other characters are similarly well-written taking some of the extremely minor characters from the original FF7 and making them stand out as great characters. No more is this well exemplified than with the villains of the Shinra Electric Company. Every single one of them are great in how loathsome they are (except for maybe Palmer, but that's only because he only shows up like once in the entire game, and Reeve because he isn't hateful, but he is written really well). This game ends perhaps the absolute strongest I have ever seen a game end, as soon as those credits hit I knew I was in this for the long haul. I love every single remix and new versions of the songs from FF7, they are an absolute delight and I cannot wait to hear what the new versions of some of the stuff from later in the original will sound like. There are a couple of lame duck moments in terms of gameplay, but for the most part this was a really solid game throughout and I can't wait for 7-2 and so on.
Nioh 2. Love it! I positively love the combat in this game, it is one of the most satisfying games I played all last year. The difficulty I feel ramps up especially well, and never really comes across as spiteful or going to far with the jumps in difficulty. I like how the game is both a prequel and sequel to the original Nioh with the bulk of the action taking place prior to Bill Nioh's wild Japan Adventure. I adore the non-human enemies in this game especially some of the wilder ones they introduce in the late game. If you liked the first Nioh you'll definitely enjoy Nioh 2. I wonder if they're going to do a Nioh 3, or move on to a different type of action game from here? A new Ninja Gaiden would be cool, especially since the DLC in Nioh 1 had a reference to the Hayabusa clan, and Nioh 2 has some moves from Ninja Gaiden. I love the new weapons they added to this, the switch-glaive and the claws they added in the second DLC are just lovely weapons to use.
Doom Eternal. I adore this game so much. It is just positively thrilling to play from beginning to end, this is game is positively brutal to play through and I LOVE it to pieces. I've played through the campaign three times, twice on console, and when I got a computer that could handle it I played through the campaign and the DLC that's available there (I also bought it twice on PC because I mistakenly bought the Bethesda launcher version). The gameplay is unbelievably solid throughout the entire campaign, add in to that the sheer delight that is running through levels with cheat codes and this game stands as the best example of games this year. When I thought the game couldn't possibly get any harder the game then entices you to play the remixed levels that change enemy placements and in multiple cases replaces them with some of the end-game enemies that will positively destroy you. Then there's the DLC: The Ancient Gods part 1, which at the time when it came out I hadn't played Doom Eternal in a couple of months so I was a bit rusty so the game made sure to punish me for that. It is absolutely brutal and assumes you just recently finished the campaign because it starts at the level of the last level of the game and gets harder from there. The combat across the base game and the DLC is honestly among some of the best I have ever played.

THINGS THAT YOU WANT TO HEAR. - Not Accepting
@dokuhebi asked: ❝ you’re important. ❞ //Kabu
Kabuto loathed most of the company Orochimaru kept. It wasn’t necessarily because of who they were as people, of course - he didn’t doubt that the Sound’s Shinobi and its allies could very well make for good companions, in some cases.
It was the Sannin’s interest in the others that made him so - so -
Well.
He didn’t like to call it jealousy. To call it jealousy, or its crueler cousin envy, implied that he felt insecure about his role in their organization, and there was no insecurity there. Kabuto knew he was the favorite, he knew he had a placement none of the others could touch.
And that’s what you are to me, he thinks, black eyes moving from face to face as Orochimaru assigns tasks for the latest mission, as his hateful gaze reminds all of the gathered Shinobi who their leader’s guard dog and right-hand man is. You’re others. I don’t trust any of you, and I know you don’t trust me. But I can be rid of any of you with a word, and none of you can even touch me.
No, no. It wasn’t jealousy. He wouldn’t be their most trusted companion if his status was in peril from any of these others, people he would willingly and gleefully throw under the proverbial bus for perceived slights against him or Orochimaru - to say nothing of what he would do to the ones who definitely overstepped their boundaries.
Like the idiot who had just dared to roll their eyes when the Sannin’s back was turned, probably because he had been given something easy to do, something the overconfident ninja thought was beneath him.
Kabuto already has a plan for how to handle this disrespectful act, to be put in motion right now, because it’s finally his turn to receive an assignment.
The cold and cruel medic locks eyes with his leader - and the change will be visible to Orochimaru, the way his gaze softens and warms up just for them.
“Yes, My Lord?”
“You’re important for this one, Kabuto. Come with me.”
And follow them he does - before pausing.
“I have an issue with one of your assignments.” Kabuto points at the offending Shinobi, refusing to even use his name. “I don’t think this one is a good choice for Mission 2-B. I think his abilities are better suited for educational purposes, and I’ve been meaning to give a lesson on proper eye care to your subordinates. If I may, Orochimaru-sama?”
This, as Orochimaru is bound to know, is merely a string of code words - they will know, without being directly told, that someone was foolish enough to slight them, and that said slight took the form of eye rolling. Kabuto is offering to see to it that the Shinobi’s last role in Orochimaru’s services is to be used as an example of what happens when the Sannin’s ranks fall out of line.
“As I recall,” Kabuto says, a fond tone contrasting sharply with his wicked smile, “it’s been a while since I’ve played the part of an educator. Perhaps the others will sit quietly while I instruct them - If that is your will, of course.”
#daily reminder that pre war kabu is a monster at his worst and a bastard often :')#the ninjas are deadly and silent ( v ; naruto )#here is a plea from my heart to you ( v ; dokuhebi )#and i say welcome to the show ( ic )#your love is like bad medicine ( kabuto yakushi )#and i think i deserve some praise ( answered asks )#long post

“Tiki Bun”
Coupled with “Shaba Daba Doo” and “Mikaeri Bijin”
Release date: October 15, 2014
Oricon Weekly placement: 2nd
Members: Ayumi Ishida, Erina Ikuta, Haruka Kudo, Haruna Iikubo, Kanon Suzuki, Masaki Sato, Mizuki Fukumura, Riho Sayashi, Sakura Oda, Sayumi Michishige
With so much focus put on formation dances, it’s been quite a while since Morning Musume introduced a catchy move in their choreography waiting to be imitated, like, say, the ninja-star gesture of “Renai Revolution 21.” The idols pantomime a DJ in “Tiki Bun” to presumably allude to its nonsensical title, which reads like a poor man’s attempt at beat-boxing a scratching routine. The group collectively lean on one ear of their imaginary headphones and furiously run their nonexistent LP back.
The cutting and scratching actually connects well with the sample-happy production. Microscopic pieces of filtered vocals are meticulously cut and arranged, similar to the manner of the piano riffs of “Toki Wo Koe, Sora Wo Koe,” but also like a more fine-point take on techniques showcased in an UK garage or a French house single. The breakdown of “Tiki Bun” in particular reminds me of something like the vocal splicing of Daft Punk’s “Face to Face” or, if you want to think domestically, Perfume’s “Nee.”
The DJ gesture is also an extension of the main musical gag of “Tiki Bun.” “To myself, who runs away from everything without doing anything — tiki bun, tiki bun,” the idols sing during the last verse, and the titular line punctuates the lyric as they rewind the record for a do-over. They also freely take advantage of the lack of meaning behind the titular phrase, standing in as if it’s a censor for an expletive for instance in the next line: “That person who takes only the good parts — tiki bun, tiki bun,” they mutter about a nuisance of a rival.
However playful “Tiki Bun” may seem, Morning Musume tackle the single with the same level of seriousness and conviction as they have with their previous singles. “Tiki Bun” is yet another classic Colorful-era song about self-progress and the group’s well-defined code of ethics. “Even if it goes up in flames, I won’t be afraid/ If everything you say isn’t a lie, then that’s fine/ You’re the one who created it anyway,” they sing in the chorus with all the members linked arm to arm. They might talk smack or throw a fit on the side, but they reason it’s only what every person does.
More than the scratching gestures or the meaninglessness of tiki bun, what comes across the silliest in “Tiki Bun” is how dramatic they jump from idea to idea while they discuss their topic of progress. A segue doesn’t seem to be a necessary tool for Morning Musume, and their perspective wildly shifts as they cover different personal problems. They caution themselves about wanting what they can’t have — a petty offense compared to the rest of their issues — and then suddenly bicker about the egotistic nature of the entire human species. “The ocean, the sky, the mountains, they are all crying,” they sing in disappointment.
If “Tiki Bun” is not your first Morning Musume single, this should be nothing new. We recently encountered this lack of a segue shifting in perspective from the personal to the world at large in “Egao Wa Kimi No Taiyousa” with how the small gestures can impact the whole of humanity. This similar lack of divide between big and small as well as the essential to the trivial built character for the group’s classics such as “Love Machine,” “Renai Revolution 21,” and “The Peace.” “Tiki Bun” simply follows tradition by thinking out loud about the good of humanity without a concern for wit or poise.
However, even after going through 60-plus singles for this blog, and spending several months with their music, I remain speechless whenever I encounter this specific defining feature of Morning Musume songs. The natural beat of a conversation not only escapes them but seem to also hold them back to say what they want to say and say it how they wish to say it. Hyperbole doesn’t seem to exist for this group because for them, every experience exists in the same plane of significance. Their aside about the rising human population in “Tiki Bun” was one of the audacious lyrics that inspired me to begin this blog, so I can freak out in length about how ridiculous they sound singing it yet how they make it work. Years after encountering it, I’m still astonished at what they’ve done.
