"Flurryclaw has decided to step down from being deputy," Skystar says in lieu of a greeting.

Turtlestar hums as she sits down beside him. "She's retiring then? That's great to hear. I'm happy for her."

"Yes, I am too. She’s served the Clan well, she deserves to rest.”

“Have you decided who will be the new deputy?” Turtlestar questions. She watches him as he tilts his head away, coyly avoiding her gaze. She narrows her eyes. “Why are you acting like that?”

“Just hear me out…”

“Oh, StarClan.” She rolls her eyes. “Tell me it isn’t Hopstripe.”

The young warrior is — fine, he's fine. Just too young, really, barely a year into being a warrior. There are better choices, those older and more experienced. Someone like Wrenfall, or Vixenfeather would be better suited. Vixenfeather is knowledgeable, skillful, and popular at that. She and the rest of the Clan would adjust well to her new duties.

But Hopstripe? He's a good patrol member, dutiful and loyal, but he does not take on responsibility easily. He's best as a partner, a companion, someone who would have your back when trouble comes. But he is not a leader.

A part of Turtlestar can’t help but be a bit annoyed with Skystar at the suggestion. His little crush on the younger tom is was not well known by the rest of the Clan, but as Skystar’s closest friend, it’s well known to her. She has spent the past six moons listening to him wax poetic about Hopstripe, all while he's owned her heart and has no idea. For two years now, she’s swallowed her feelings and kept her mouth shut, hiding how she felt for him. She was content with what they had — they were friends, and he did not reciprocate her feelings beyond that, and that was fine. But she can’t lie and say that it doesn't hurt, at least, to then listen to Skystar as he pines after someone he barely knows, while she’s right there, and —

“It’s not Hopstripe.”

Turtlestar startles. “Who is it, then?”

Skystar turns to face her fully and finally meets her eyes. “It’s you.”

Her stomach drops. “What?”

“Hear me out,” he pleads. “I know it didn't... work out for you, in the past. You were young, it was scary, I get it —”

"That's not it," she interjects.

“Then why don’t you tell me?” he snaps, exasperated. She flinches. “All this time, and you’ve barely told me anything. No matter how many times I've asked. I want to know you, I want to help you. I want to understand.” His expression softens. “Help me understand.”

There's a cold feeling clawing at Turtlestar's heart. She would rather be anywhere else, doing anything other than having this conversation. Why did he have to choose her? Why couldn't he have chosen Vixenfeather, or even Hopstripe? Anyone but her. She can't do this all over again.

She ducks her head. Skystar is right, though, in a way. Two years, and she hasn't been forthcoming. She's been by his side, but hasn't allowed him to be by hers.

The words don't come easily. “It wasn’t — timing, or injustice, or anything like that. It wasn’t anyone else’s fault. I messed up, and it was my fault. It was all me. I’m just not fit to be a leader.”

“Really?" he says, disbelievingly, but not unkindly. "Because the cat I’ve gotten to know has been nothing but a strong, capable leader. You’ve always been the first to step up and solve problems. When a mentor is sick, you take their apprentice out training. When a new leak has sprung in the dens, you experiment and build it back stronger. When Flurryclaw has to take a day off, you're there organizing patrols in her stead. You've just always done it without thinking.” Skystar touches his tailtip to her chin, lifting her head back up to look at him. “That’s the kind of cat I want by my side.”

Her face burns, with shame or embarrassment or feelings-which-shall-not-be-named, she doesn’t know. She doesn’t respond, just stares at him, wide-eyed and heart thudding in her chest.

Skystar watches her back, his blue eyes sparkling and warm. “I know you had a rough time back in SpruceClan. But you were so young back then. Things have changed. We’re older now. And this time, you won’t be alone.”

She never did have someone like Skystar in SpruceClan. Someone she could trust, and someone who trusted her back in turn. Someone who encouraged her, someone who pushed her past her limits. Someone who spends time with her, who shares prey with her, who laughs at her mediocre jokes. Someone who shares tongues with her, and lets his pelt brush against hers subconsciously, and touches his tailtip to her chin and stares into her eyes.

He may not return her feelings, but he's still her best friend. And she's his.

Turtlestar sighs. "Fine. For you, Skystar, I'll be CloudClan's deputy."

Info about Cloudclan: They are located in a forest near the Breezeclan fields, because they are more accustomed to the shade rather than direct sunlight they generally have more fur and they have the ability to climb trees that has been mastered over the years. As for their personality, they are extremely arrogant and think they are superior to Breezeclan, usually fighting over anything, they have a better relationship with loners and horrible relationship with kittypet just like Breezeclan

So you want to build a clan?- Step 2: Naming

There are three most common techniques for naming a clan in the Warriors fandom today, which rely on canon and common sense to help with building new clans. Each of these highlight different aspects of the clans themselves: their origin, their home, and their culture. As i  explain each one, it is important to understand that none of them are better than any other, as each of them has their own merits.

Method One- Clan Named after First Leader

In all technicality, this is the canon naming practice for the clans in the series. Each clan was named for the first leader, or for the most prominent  of the first few generations of the clans.

Thunderclan  was named after Thunder, Riverclan after River, etc.

While this is the canon approach to naming, few on the fandom advocate for this type of clan naming. Some say that it can end in odd names for clans, which have little impact on actual clan life, such as Ravenclan or some such.

However depending on the plot or clan itself, it can be a plausible and useful naming tradition. The two ways it can be used most effectively are if clans are just being formed and created, or if the clan has a very deep respect or tradition to honor their ancestors and thus their creator.

Examples:

Cats have lived in this twolegplace for longer than any of them could possibly know, but suddenly  they are being hunted, destroyed because there are so many of them. Some of them manage to flee into the wilderness past the boundaries, but struggle to survive in the wilderness.  A shecat named  Ivy, and her gaggle of older kits take some of them in, particularly mothers with kittens. They teach the cats how to survive, and end up forming something which is more than just a clouder, but a family and a society which subsist on each other.

Another of the refugees,  a tom named Brick, who had lived in the worst part of the twolegplace all his life, gathered several cats with him. These cats were hardier, of a more desperate nature.  They struggled to unlearn their violent ways for the patience of hunting. Soon they created a martial system, similar but different to the other group.

Likely it was Ivy who first adopted the word Clan to refer to her cats, and then Brick followed. To differentiate between the clans, outside cats called them by the names of their leaders: Ivy’s Clan and Brick’s Clan.

For several years, the clans lived as such until Ivy passed away. The clan convened, trying to decide what to do. After all, they had a new leader, they could no longer be called Ivy’s clan… could they? As they conferred together the clan decided that in order to honor Ivy and their ancestors, they would be called Ivyclan. From then on they would place great honor and the prefix Ivy was excluded from their naming form, but most of all, their greatest focus would be on their ancestors,  the cats who had come before.

Thus you have Ivyclan. However, it would not be a surprise if in time a clan may come to rename themselves if they felt their identity had changed.

Method 2- Naming Clan after a defining Feature of the territory.

The most common and what is considered to be the most valid of the different clan naming methods, this relies on the importance of the territory on the clan itself. It is rather straight forward, and likely started with a clan being known as the “clan of the (something in the territory)” which would eventually be shortened to ----clan.

Example: Several clans of cats have taken up residence in an area. One clan lives in a predominantly alpine meadows region, and others live in a forest, cliff like mountain, and ravine area. To differentiate between the clans, they are referred to by their territory: clan of the meadows, clan of the forest, clan of the cliffs, and clan of the creek. Eventually the clan cats are tired of the mouthful, and shorten the names to Meadowclan, Oakclan, Cliffclan, and Creekclan.

Method 3- Naming a Clan for an important part of clan culture.

This is the most uncommon of the naming methods, but nonetheless a very interesting one if successfully applied. Many people are likely to look down on this form of naming, particularly if the worldbuilding justifying it is not complete. In some ways, it often channels either one or both of the previous methods, after all a clans culture is shaped by their environment and by their past. Unfortunately this is a bit harder to explain without an example, so hopefully this will make a bit more sense.

Example: Cloudclan seems very strange to most of the other clans. They have normal warriors true, but then they have this weird cat called the Skywatcher. He kind of just stares at the sky all the time, and it unnerves the cats from outside the clan. But what they do not understand,  is that although the medicine cat is connected to Starclan like most other clans, the Skywatcher is the one who receives the omens, even regular day to day messages, through the clouds. Not only that, but the Skywatcher knows the weather almost perfectly, and is the only protection many Cloud clan cats have against the fierce storms and winds which can rip a cat from the high moors and toss them painfully across the fields. Some of the elders still remember the odd looks they got when they announced their clan name, but clouds were the lifeline of the clan, it seemed only natural to name the clan after them.

Alright, hope these all made sense, and that they are interesting concepts to keep in mind when naming a clan!
