Milestone Monday
Today, January 9, is the birthday anniversary of Joseph Strauss, the American engineer who was the principal designer of the Golden Gate Bridge, who was born in 1870. He was a major innovator in bridge design, especially of the bascule bridge. He faced many challenges with the Golden Gate, including the great distance of the span, the unprecedented height of the bridge, and the sheer force of the Pacific Ocean. He knew this would be an extremely hazardous undertaking and he insisted on having a safety net beneath the construction site, which ended up saving 19 lives. But perhaps his biggest challenge was the staunch opposition he faced toward the project, and he spent more than 10 years drumming up support. Construction finally began in January 1933 and the bridged open on May 27, 1937. Strauss died almost a year later on May 16.
In commemoration we present the 1998 artist’s book Opening Day by Colleen Mullins, printed in Minneapolis in an edition of 500 copies with the financial support of the Women’s Studio Workshop of Rosendale, N.Y. Mullins made the book in honor of her father Clement A. Mullins, a 30-year Senior Architect for the City and County of San Francisco, who was suffering from dementia. He could remember in great detail crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on opening day in 1937, but he could not recall doing the same with his daughter in 1987 on the bridge’s 50th anniversary. The artist writes: “This book is dedicated to Clem, so that he might remember me, and that he might remember himself.” Mullins uses the expanse of the bridge as a metaphor for the expanse of lives and family relationships. The photographs are by both father and daughter.

Baseball and Hispanic Community: Finding Inspiration in the Collections
Baseball and Hispanic Community: Finding Inspiration in the Collections By Wendi Maloney Published August 01, 2018 at 04:43PM
This post is by Marcos Castillo, a 2018 intern with the Junior Fellows Program. He is a senior at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. This summer, he worked in the Library’s Hispanic Division.

The opening this June of the exhibition “Baseball Americana” at the Library of Congress prompted me to think about the history of our national pastime. Baseball is not only a national phenomenon, but an international marvel as well. While interning in the Hispanic Division, with access to its remarkable collections, I learned more this summer about how the game became a significant part of Hispanic culture in Latin America and the United States.
As a member of the Hispanic community myself, and the ultimate baseball fan, I am fascinated by the impact of baseball on the Hispanic community and the community’s impact on baseball. Had I not had professional Hispanic baseball players as role models, I know I would have found it difficult, as an average player, to envision playing on a college baseball team on an athletic scholarship, as I do at Lincoln University. Moreover, if it were not for my favorite player, Mariano Rivera, from my family’s home country of Panama, I would not have had the privilege of being part of the Library’s Junior Fellows Program – and I would not have written this post! – because baseball is what motivated me to pursue a degree.
When tracing how Hispanics became part of U.S. baseball, we have to look back to the 1860s when the first Cuban player joined a professional U.S. league. Estevan Enrique Bellán, born in Havana, made his baseball debut in the U.S. in 1868. Earlier, Cuban students studying in the U.S. had brought the game back home and helped to develop its popularity.
Cuban-born Rafael Almeida is featured on this tobacco company baseball card. One of the first Hispanics to compete in the major leagues, he played for the Cincinnati Reds from 1911 to 1913.
In 1878, the inaugural game of the Cuban baseball league took place, starting a trend. Soon, other countries, including the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Mexico, formed their own leagues, producing many players who eventually played in the U.S.
It took time for Hispanic players to be accepted into mainstream American baseball. But thanks in large part to outstanding players like Rod Carew (Panama), Roberto Clemente (Puerto Rico), Tony Pérez (Cuba) and Fernando Valenzuela (Mexico), Latin America is now a key region for developing players’ skills and a leading source for scouts looking for new players. And Latin American countries have embraced the sport as part of their culture.
Print of a tobacco-package label from Cuba showing a baseball game, circa 1867.
Today, we can truly see the impact that Hispanic players have had on Major League Baseball (MLB). In 2017, they made up 31.9 percent of the league, according to the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, the highest percentage ever in MLB history. They are represented on every MLB team – each team has at least one Hispanic player. And some of contemporary baseball’s greatest stars are either from Latin America or of Latin-American descent, including José Altuve (Venezuela), Nolan Arenado (Cuba/Puerto Rico), Robinson Canó (Dominican Republic), Aroldis Chapman (Cuba) and Francisco Lindor (Puerto Rico).
Apart from sheer numbers, Hispanic players act as ambassadors for the game, inspiring young players to continue pursuing their dreams of playing league ball no matter their circumstances.
From the strong foundation early players created in the 19th century to the great players of today’s MLB, Hispanics have influenced baseball in important ways. With their numbers increasing, they no doubt have much more to achieve.

Cheltenham vs Grimsby 2-1 – Match Review/Player and Manager Ratings article
(Source/Credit- ctfc.com)
Match Review
Amid Windy conditions at kick-off till full-time, the weather made it hard for both teams to play. However, the weather didn’t hamper Grimsby as they started the game as the much brighter side, and a curler from Embleton nearly gave the Mariners an early lead in this game, but luckily for Cheltenham, it just curled wide of the post. Up till the midway in the first half, Grimsby were the much better team and a misjudgement from Flinders nearly cost Cheltenham a goal as Thomas’s header sailed wide of the post to Flinders relief.
It took Cheltenham a while to grow into the game, however in the 29th minute they took the lead through Ryan Broom, as his deflected effort beat the helpless McKeown in the Grimsby goal to give Cheltenham an undeserved 1-0 lead at his point.
That goal lifted Cheltenham, and they were the better team up till half-time, and should have went 2-0 when Tozer’s long throw caused havoc in the Grimsby area, and it eventually fell to Barnett, who from close range smashed his effort into the side netting to Michael Duff’s frustration.
Although Cheltenham were better up till half-time, Grimsby did have two chances in the 43rd minute to level the game at 1-1, but Vernam’s efforts at goal were well saved by Flinders.
However, the action wasn’t finished there in the first half as the Robins nearly went 2-0 up right on the stroke of half-time, as a well worked corner found Maddox and his goal bound effort was well saved by the Grimsby goalkeeper.
So, at half time, Cheltenham went 1-0 up. Could the Mariners get back into this game, or could Michael Duff’s side pick up a vital 3 points in League to move them further away from the relegation zone?
The second half started the way that he first half ended, with Cheltenham on top, and they had early chances in the second half to go 2-0 up. The first chance was nearly an Grimsby own goal from Hendrie as he completely mis cleared Broom’s cross into the box, but to his relief it went over the bar rather than under the bar.
However, Grimsby did grow into the second half after early Cheltenham pressure in the second half to kill off the game.
And that pressure from the Mariners paid off in the 63rd minute to level this game at 1-1, as Thomas’s shot was flashed across goal and found Embleton unmarked at the back post to tap in to Michael Duff’s frustration. That was poor defending from Cheltenham to concede that goal…
Grimsby for long periods of the second half looked like getting the next goal in this game, and they should have in the 69th minute when Thomas was played through 1-on-1 and his shot was well saved by Flinders to keep the score at 1-1. One minute later Embleton’s effort curled over Flinders’ bar. Grimsby should have been 1-2 up midway through the second half. These subs for Cheltenham have really impacted them so far in the second half…
In the 74th minute, Grimsby had penalty appeals waved away to Cheltenham’s relief…
Could Cheltenham get back on the ascendancy midway through the second half and nick a win from this vital game in league 2?
The initial answer was looking like being no, as Grimsby looked the more likely side to nick the game 1-2, as they had headed chances from corners to do so through Collins and Thomas in the 80th and 81st minute. Grimsby’s best chance to win the game came in the 84th minute on the counter attack when Pringle was found free and he cut in and shot, but Flinders saved superbly.
The final answer was yes! As Sam Jones won a penalty in the 90th minute after Davis lunged in on the substitute. The penalty was well converted by Connor Thomas to give Cheltenham a 2-1 lead late on, and surely win it for the Robins!
Cheltenham did see it out and this win was massive for the Robins!
Player and Manager Ratings
Cheltenham Town (3-5-2)
Flinders (MOTM)- 9 (made 3 to 4 great saves which were essential for Cheltenham nicking the win today)
Tozer- 7 (Solid performance. Caused a few problems to the Grimsby defence with his long throws into the box)
Mullins- 7 (Solid performance. Stepped in well for the suspended Forster)
Boyle- 7 (Solid performance overall. A little shaky in the second half)
Broom- 8 (Excellent in the attacking sense, but was caught out a little defensively early in the game)
Maddox- 7 (good performance- took him a while to grow back into the game. A shame that he got injured)
Atangana- 6 (Solid until he went off in the second half)
Clements- 6 (Played well)
Hussey- 7 (Got forward a lot and was influential in the attacking sense)
Barnett- 5 (Poor today. Missed a great chance to make it 2-0 and kill off the game early)
Varney- 6 (Average. Had a few chances)
Subs;
Thomas- 8 (Scored the winning penalty!)
Addai- 6 (Wasn’t as good as he was midweek)
Jones- 7 (Won the last-minute penalty for Cheltenham)
Manager Rating: Michael Duff- 7 – Picked the right team but some of his early changes in the second half derailed Cheltenham’s momentum.
Grimsby Town (4-1-4-1)
McKeown- 8 (Made some vital saves to eventually help Cheltenham get the 2-1 win)
Hendrie- 5 (Shaky at the back)
Collins- 6 (Had a few chances from corners)
Davies- 5 (Poor)
Fox- 6 (Made an important clearance off the line from Varney’s cross)
Hessenthaler- 8 (Solid in the midfield)
Vernam- 7 (Had 2 good chances which were well saved by Flinders)
Embleton – 9 (Grimsby’s MOTM. Excellent. Was the most dangerous player on the pitch. Scored the equaliser)
Clifton- 7 (Solid)
Pringle- 6 (Had a massive chance to put Grimsby 1-2 up which he missed)
Thomas- 6 (Had some good moments but also some bad moments like his 1-on-1 miss in the second half)
Subs;
Cook- 6 (Didn’t make a noticeable impact on the game)
Rose- 5 (Didn’t have enough time to impact the game)
Cardwell- 5 (Didn’t have enough time to impact the game)
Manager rating: Michael Jolley- 6- His team played well and were unlucky not to get anything from the game. Left his subs too late though.

$300k Hollywood Derby (G1)
$300,000 Hollywood Derby (G1)
Del Mar
Race 7 (Saturday, December 1, 2018: 6:30 p.m./ET; 3:30 p.m./PT)
Mile and an eighth on the turf (three-year-olds)
Closing weekend at Del Mar’s Fall Festival meet features a plethora of turf racing. The main event on Saturday, the $300,000 Hollywood Derby (G1), attracts a full field of 14 talented three-year-olds from all over the country. Let’s get to the analysis:
#1 HAVE AT IT was last seen finishing a half-length behind #4 RIVER BOYNE in the Twilight Derby (G2) at Santa Anita. Before that, this colt won the Hill Prince (G2) at Belmont. David Cohen flies in for the ride for the Clement barn. One to consider.
#2 KAZAN (IRE) finished second in September in the Del Mar Derby (G2), then returned two months later to run sixth behind #4 RIVER BOYNE, #1 HAVE AT IT and #8 DESERT STONE in the Twilight Derby (G2). It’s worth noting that in that last run, this gelding had to swing wide turning for home and the rider lost the whip at the sixteenth pole. Nonetheless, it appears improvement is needed.
#3 RISKY PROPOSITION surprised six other rivals (at 22/1!) in his most recent start three weeks ago in the Let It Ride Stakes. This time around, he faces the toughest field he’s ever gone up against and will need to prove that the last win was no fluke. Playing against.
#4 RIVER BOYNE (IRE) disappointed in the Del Mar Derby (G2), finishing third at even money behind winner RIDE A COMET and #2 KAZAN. He was able to rebound after that subpar effort with a half-length victory in his most recent start, the Twilight Derby (G2). This Jeff Mullins trainee has won five of seven races this year, with three of those victories coming at this nine-panel distance. Major player once again.
#5 FIGHT ON looks to snap a six race streak of not crossing the finish line first (he was DQ’d into a victory two starts back). Passing.
#6 RAGING BULL (FR) is one of two runners shipping across country for this race for trainer Chad Brown. This colt by DARK ANGEL finished off the board for the first time in his most recent start, circling up wide before flattening out late and finishing two-and-a-quarter lengths behind #1 HAVE IT ALL in the Hill Prince (G1). Sure, that last run is cause for concern, but his two and three back efforts, which resulted in sharp-looking wins in the Hall of Fame (G2) and Saranac (G3), were real beauties. Joel Rosario flies in to ride; must respect.
#7 INSTILLED REGARD makes his turf debut for the aforementioned Chad Brown barn. Returning from a four-and-a-half month layoff last time out, this $1,050,000 2-year-old purchase lost by 25 lengths to multiple graded stakes winner MCKINZIE in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1). Obviously, this one will need to improve significantly off that last run to make an impact here, but Florent Geroux sees fit to ride.
#8 DESERT STONE (IRE) ran a huge race in the Twilight Derby (G2), sitting off the pace before coming with a run to only lose by a half-length to #4 RIVER BOYNE and #1 HAVE AT IT at 37/1. Problem is, this guy will have to face those two rivals again while also having to deal with some other new customers signed on to compete in this spot. Would best be used underneath in exotics, if anywhere.
#9 PLATINUM WARRIOR (IRE) makes his third start in North America after beginning his career in Ireland, where he won a Group 3 going a mile-and-a-quarter. Now in the John Sadler barn (who is winless at the meet), he may want a little more distance.
#10 WAY EARLY is a New York-bred that comes off a fourth place finish (against older) in a New York-bred turf race at Aqueduct over good ground on November 9. He failed to win an allowance race two starts back at Belmont, losing by a nose to allowance caliber runner WINTER UNION. Off his recent form, he’ll need to pick up his feet to win this race.
#11 CARRICK won the Secretariat (G1) at huge odds (38/1), defeating #9 PLATINUM WARRIOR in the process. Most recently, the Thomas Morley trainee lost by 27 lengths to older horses CHANNEL MAKER, ROBERT BRUCE and SADLER’S JOY in the Turf Classic (G1). In the aforementioned poor effort, he ran over soft ground while also facing some of the best older turf horses the U.S. has to offer. He’ll be happy to get back to facing three-year-olds in this spot. A rebound would be far from a surprise.
#12 PUBILIUS SYRUS finished last in the Twilight Derby (G2) behind a number of runners that compete in this spot. The same can be said for his effort two back, in which he was a no-show in the Del Mar Derby (G2). Kent Desormeaux has ridden this horse in his previous seven starts and opts to ride #11 CARRICK. Pass.
#13 PRINCE EARL went off at 4/5 odds in the Let It Ride Stakes and finished fourth, beaten a length behind #3 RISKY PROPOSITION. He has the least amount of experience of anyone in the field, with three career starts to his name. He also removes blinkers for trainer Phil D’Amato, who wins at a 20% clip with that equipment change. Needs to run a career best to win.
#14 CALIFORNIAGOLDRUSH is a filly facing boys and draws the undesirable 14-post position. Neil Drysdale trainee most recently won the Sands Point (G2) going this distance over yielding turf at Belmont Park while continuing her improving Beyer Speed Figure pattern. Flavien Prat has ridden this gal in her last three starts and opts to ride #4 RIVER BOYNE, so read into that as you will. Nonetheless, she possesses class and comes from a trainer that knows how to win big turf stakes. Interesting item.

Your Friday Morning Roundup
Ron Hextall pretty much described the Flyers game for us:
Current mood: http://pic.twitter.com/ulXb8SpeAS
— Chris Jastrzembski (@CFJastrzembski) October 27, 2017
The Flyers lost to the Ottawa Senators 5-4. It started off pretty bad. 91 seconds in, Ottawa scored on the power play. That was one of three goals they would score in the first 13:28 of the game.
Philly’s scoring came in short spurts in the second and third period. Jake Voracek got his first tally of the season, while Travis Konecny got his second of the season in the middle period. Ivan Provorov and Sean Couturier both scored late in the third.
Michal Neuvirth did not look good at all. He stopped 23 of 28 shots faced, and despite a good start in his first few games, Neuvirth came crashing down to Earth.
The game could have gone a different way had some calls went in favor of the Flyers. Early in the third, Brandon Manning’s goal was reversed due to Jordan Weal interfering with Sens goaltender Craig Anderson:
Refs checking if Weal interfered with Anderson on Manning's goal. http://pic.twitter.com/m85ypDajky
— Chris Jastrzembski (@CFJastrzembski) October 27, 2017
And as the Flyers decided to wake up and try and get at least a point late in the third, this was not called a goal because the refs deemed the play to be over. Somehow:
The play was deemed dead. http://pic.twitter.com/IygVKGF6nO
— Chris Jastrzembski (@CFJastrzembski) October 27, 2017
So of course, this game was a game the Flyers deserved to lose, but should have won, yet didn’t because of the refs. This team is strange. The extraordinary Anthony SanFilippo will have his takeaways from this game later this morning.
They stay in Canada for a couple more days as they take on Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night.
The Roundup:
The Eagles continue to get ready for Sunday’s game against the 49ers. Lane Johnson will stay at right tackle, while Halapoulivaati Vaitai replaces Jason Peters at left tackle.
Mike Quick believed in Nelson Agholor for a long time, including when he struggled. Now, Agholor’s proving doubters wrong:
It took a while, but it appears the light has finally gone on for Agholor in this, his third NFL season. Through seven games, the 2015 first-round pick is tied with tight end Zach Ertz for the team lead in touchdown catches (5) and third-down receptions (11), is first in yards per catch (15.3) among the starters, second in receiving yards (366) and third in receptions (24).
Quick cited several reasons for Agholor’s not-so-sudden success, including his move to the slot, the additions of Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith and the hiring of a new wide receivers coach, Mike Groh.
But more than anything else, he thinks Nelson Agholor finally just got comfortable with being Nelson Agholor.
“I think just having success [helped],’’ Quick said. “Nelson has spent some time just dealing with Nelson, trying to figure out Nelson, and I think it’s helped him a lot.
With the team dominating in two areas of the game, the Eagles have what it takes to go all the way.
Kevin Kinkead thinks the Eagles can get more out of running back LeGarrette Blount.
Carson Wentz found a way to use one of his old college plays with the Eagles:
Following the spectacular third-quarter touchdown pass to running back Corey Clement against the Washington Redskins — in which Wentz ducked past an initial wave of defenders and tossed a perfect ball to the corner of the end zone while getting hit from both sides — Monday Night Football commentator Jon Gruden focused on the roots of the play while everyone else in the nation was buzzing over the fruit.
“Carson Wentz is unbelievable,” Gruden said. “That’s the same play that they featured at North Dakota State. He went to [coach] Doug Pederson. He said, ‘I want to put this play in our offense.’ They threw it for a touchdown against the Giants, and now they throw it for a touchdown against the Redskins.”
Offensive coordinator Frank Reich confirmed that Wentz championed to have that play from his Bison days added to the Eagles’ playbook.
“That’s accurate. Sometimes plays have a good mojo for you — you’ve had a lot of success, you’ve got a lot of confidence in them,” Reich said. “I think what happens when you run a play over and over again, you see it against all kinds of different coverages, you see it against different coverage techniques and leverage that defenders play, and really good quarterbacks learn how to beat any coverage when they have one play that they really like, and you feel like you can’t stop the play.”
On the 49ers side, the team has switched Eric Reid from safety to linebacker. Some think he’ll be really good.
With Stranger Things 2 coming out on Netflix, Matt Mullin of PhillyVoice.com compares Eagles players to Stranger Things characters.

Small Sixers news on the day, as Furkan Korkmaz practiced with the Delaware 87ers before being called back up.
If you want to remember Wednesday night’s heart crushing defeat to the Houston Rockets, Kinkead and Kyle have you covered. But don’t worry, there’s some good things from that game!
Kinkead also takes a closer look at the team’s pick and roll struggles, along with selling the contact for some calls.

Finally, whoever made this cake and decided to use the “LOVE” sculpture instead of the Sixers logo should never be allowed to make wedding cakes again:

The Phillies are reportedly down to at least two solid candidates, according to NBC Sports Philly’s Jim Salisbury:
Team officials began the final round of interviews on Thursday. In-house candidate Dusty Wathan and outsider Gabe Kapler have emerged as finalists while former Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell is getting a late look, according to sources.
Major League Baseball frowns on clubs making significant announcements during the World Series, but there is a scheduled off-day in the event on Monday so an announcement could come on that day if club officials wrap up their search. Otherwise, an announcement would have to wait until later in the week.
By the way, Joe Girardi announced he wouldn’t return to the Yankees next season. Bob thinks the Phillies should go after him.
I had differing thoughts:
I'd rather have Wathan than Girardi. https://t.co/pvmMPnVb7X
— Chris Jastrzembski (@CFJastrzembski) October 26, 2017
Also, please consider helping Salisbury’s family:
You may have heard by now that Jim’s daughter, Mary, suffered a severe stroke in her spine that left her with a significant spinal cord injury and widespread paralysis.
Mary had recently graduated from Temple University with Honors as she earned a degree in communications. The summer after college graduation should be one of the best summers of a person’s life. New degree, new job, real money, and opportunity to go out and have fun in the city. The summer after graduation should not be spent in the hospital and at rehab facilities. It’s a terrible story, but it’s also one that can have a happy ending with some help.
Freddy Galvis is a Gold Glove finalist.

In other sports news, the Ravens shut out the Dolphins. Hopefully you didn’t watch. But if you did, Kiko Alonso tried to kill Joe Flacco:

In the news, Philadelphia Police have confirmed that South Philly gunfire from early this morning is connected to the murders of two high school students earlier in the week.
Most of the JFK Assassination files were released, but some were still withheld for at least six months.
iPhone X pre-orders began this morning. They’re already sold out.

Cheltenham 0-2 Stevenage Match Report and Player Ratings
Report
Goals;
Cheltenham Town -
Stevenage – Guthrie (17’), Seddon (45+1)
Guthrie and Seddon goals were enough for a vibrant Stevenage side to overcome a lacklustre Cheltenham side who are still winless at home.
The game started off an even contest, but as the first half went on, Stevenage upped the intensity forcing Cheltenham into many errors. Campbell Ryce looked the brightest player on the pitch for Stevenage. The Boro had an early penalty appeal waved away by the referee in the 12th minute, but didn’t have to wait very long to make the Robins pay for their lacklustre first half as in the 17th minute, Campbell-Ryce delivered a beautiful ball into the box which was met brilliantly with the head of Kurtis Guthrie who powered his header past a helpless Flinders in the Cheltenham goal.
They nearly went 2-0 up in the 21st minute but Revell poked his effort just over the Cheltenham goal. The game then just followed a pattern of Stevenage domination and Cheltenham sloppiness, up till the 40th minute where Cheltenham had their first and best chance of the first half through a Hussey shot from a freekick which was brilliantly saved by Dieng. But as the game looked to be heading 1-0 into half time for the visitors, a sloppy mistake by a Cheltenham defender on the edge of the box led to the second goal for Stevenage, as Seddon curled an effort beautiful into the bottom right corner of the goal. Then the half time whistle went and conceding that late goal was a massive blow for Cheltenham…
The second half started with Cheltenham looking a little livelier, but the first chance of the second half went to Stevenage after they nearly caught out Cheltenham on the counter attack, but Campbell-Ryce drilled his shot just wide of the goal. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first half, Stevenage domination with the odd Cheltenham chance. That next odd Cheltenham chance of the second half came to Varney after his header from a cross just trickled wide of the goal. Cheltenham really needed that header to go in to get back in the game…
Stevenage had multiple chances to kill off the game by making it 3-0, and in the 63rd minute Guthrie’s header just went wide of the post. After that, the game just drifted with both teams having half chances, but Cheltenham couldn’t test Stevenage’s back line enough, and at the end of the day, Stevenage were comfortable and easily deserved the win against a poor Cheltenham team based on today’s performance.
This win for Stevenage moves them closer and closer to the play off positions. They are 8th now in the table after todays win at Jonny Rocks stadium. They are still 2 points off the play off positions, but this win is valuable for Stevenage after they have been on a poor run in recent games. Whereas for Cheltenham, they remain second bottom with 10 points from 15 games. Things are not looking good for Cheltenham… and Michael Duff has a big task to turn this poor form around for Cheltenham. The Robins are now winless in eight matches under Michael Duff.
Attendance- 2382, with 192 Stevenage fans
