Cleistocactus strausii
While many species of Cleistocactus have a sprawling habit (the slender stems starting out growing upward, but then arching to the side), C. strausii is one of those with stems rigid enough to stay upright. A dense covering of needle-like spines and hairs gives the plants a shaggy look, with the tubular flowers jutting out at right angles. Pictured are two different forms of the species, one with longer and narrower flowers, and the other with shorter and furrier flowers. Each is delightful in its own way. Cleistocactus strausii comes from Bolivia.

Plant of the Day
Wednesday 1 February 2023
Adding a vertical element to this cacti house is Cleistocactus strausii (silver torch). This is a vigorous cactus covered in white spines on hairy, bluish-grey columns. It must be lovely when covered in tubular deep red or burgundy flowers which are scattered along the stems in summer.

Caring for silver torch cactus is just a breeze! 🌵✨ These stunning succulents shoot up like silver flames in your space. They adore sunshine, so give them a sunny nook. When they're thirsty, offer a drink, but don't drown them – they prefer sips. With their unique beauty and easy care, they're a shining star in any collection

Cleistocactus strausii, also known as the silver torch cactus, at the Stanford Arizona cactus garden. When the sun hits it it kind of glows from all the hairs on it. If you're gentle you can pet it without being poked, as long as you're petting down and not up.

Cleistocactus hyalacanthus
Cleistocactus is a genus of generally slender-stemmed columnar cacti from South America. While many of the species start out growing erectly, but then sprawl to the side as they elongate, Cleistocactus hyalacanthus is one of those that keep to an upright growth form, making a cluster of shaggy columns. The spine color ranges from white to yellowish-brown. This species is similar to C. strausii, but its flower color is more pinkish-red (as opposed to the more purplish-red color of C. strausii, which also has longer flowers). The tubular flowers, attractive to hummingbirds, are a notable feature of the genus. C. hyalacanthus is native to northwestern Argentina.

Plant of the Day
Wednesday 8 February 2023
In the cactus house of Inverness Botanic Garden, Scotland, there was a fine display of Cleistocactus strausii (silver torch). This was last featured at a glasshouse in Aberdeen (Wednesday 1 February 2023) but these looked so great I couldn’t resist including this dramatic and vigorous cactus again.
