I've been enjoying recording podfics, at least partially as an exercise in learning to love my voice even though there's some weird shit about it. It's a little lispy, a little non-specific-drawly-american-accent, tons of things that piss off men like vocal fry and whatever it's called when you treat random sentences like questions. (Also can we get a big fuck you to my ex-husband for "jokingly" making fun of me for it all the fucking time?)

There are a lot of things to love about Pete, but I love how they just let his voice stand as it is. Nobody ever mentions it.

I also love this line about him specifically.

you guys don’t actually know me apart from the content i make and my bio so here’s a little introduction

i’m isis, i live in the netherlands (it’s a normal name here) i’m mixed dutch, surinamese and aruban (part of the antilles above venezuela) i’m a 16 year old cis girl and use she/her pronouns

i’m on the ace and aro spectrum, i feel like i fit into many of the sexualities on the spectrum but i identify as aroaceflux, aegosexual/romantic, quoisexual/romantic + questioning/unlabelled/idk (instead of bisexual) the last sexuality i’ve identified with is bisexual and i have had phases with different sexualities and genders over the years (btw not in the way like “you’ll get over your delusions” or “your swinging between labels is invalid” phases, just that my attraction has varied a lot)

i’m autistic (neurological disability), i have a cleft palate (birth defect but still disabling) (look it up), i have hearing loss (physical disability as named by wikipedia), speech and language processing disorder (physical disability as named by wikipedia) and i have ocd (mental disorder) (which i use medication for)

living with these disabilities and disorders is literally impossible even if you remove all and leave autism and ocd, it’s still impossible. it is disabling in everyday life but not exactly like elhers-danlos syndromes disabling for example

my voice is a bit nasal (i’ve had surgeries but still), i’ve had hearing aids but they suck (for the explanation just ask), the speech and language processing disorder is hard to explain though but you can ask. being autistic makes me overstimulated etc, but some things are bc of neurotypical things which aren’t even logical for everyday life and other things like clothes or fabrics that feel which is more personal and ocd (obsessive compulsive disorder) is the most disabling actually (look up the word compulsive). i have a hard time getting things done bc some things have to be exactly a certain way

Nimona (2023 Movie) - Ballister/Ambrosius - Cleft Awareness Month Prompt 8 : Hearing Problems

Prompt : Write a fic (can be fluff, hurt/comfort, whatever the author sees fit) where a character has a cleft palate (lip is optional) and their hearing isn't great because of it (can range from just slightly poor hearing to severe hearing loss/issues). Headcanon : Ballister has a cleft lip and palate

"Bal?" Ambrosius said, catching the other man's attention.

"Hm?"

"I asked what you wanted to get for dinner" Ambrosius said patiently.

"I didn't hear you, sorry" Ballister said with a small frown. His hearing had been getting worse recently.

To be fair, it had never been great. Due to his cleft, he'd gotten a lot of ear infections when he was young, and it had led to gradual hearing loss. Even with all the high-end medical treatment he had access to once the Queen had taken him under her wing, the infections and subsequent hearing loss didn't just go away until they'd taken the next step and put tubes in his ears but, by then, the damage had already been done.

Plus, he was getting older now. He wasn't elderly by any means but, his aging ears (which were often assaulted by the chaos of his life), combined with the wear and tear from the ailments of his childhood... Yeah, it certainly added up.

"That's alright. You don't need to apologize" Ambrosius replied with a warm smile, pulling him back to the present. "So... Dinner?"

"Nimona likes pizza" he said almost instinctually. Ambrosius chuckled, but Ballister only returned it halfway, and that's when he clued in that something was wrong.

"You wanna talk about whatever's bugging you?" he asked as he opened up the delivery website on his phone and begin inputting the family's usual order, making sure to get a bit extra for Nimona, since she was out playing with the local kids and tended to be especially hungry after a long day of chaos.

"It's just... My hearing's been getting worse" Ballister sighed. Ambrosius looked up at him with concern.

"Do we need to take you to the doctor?"

"It's nothing serious" Ballister assured him. "It's just aging and... You remember how I got ear infections all the time when we were kids?"

"How could I forget?"

"That also had worn down on my ears a fair bit" he explained. "I guess it's just all finally catching up to me"

"Okay" Ambrosius nodded. "Thank you for telling me"

"Of course" Ballister replied with a crooked smile. "No pineapple on the pizza" he said suddenly, glancing at the screen. "Nimona won't eat it"

Ambrosius just laughed and unchecked the 'Pineapple' option.

August 2022. This was at the tail end of a research internship I had at the time.

I was born with a cleft lip and palate. I’ve had two surgeries, one a few days after I’d been born and one when I was around seven or eight, to close the hole in my soft palate. I also underwent several years of speech therapy and orthodontic treatment. Despite this, I’ve never had a particularly bad self-image. Perhaps this is because I was never bullied by other kids for my appearance. I think by being homeschooled, I avoided the prime years for this.

It’s hard to explain, but even though other people don’t think I’m conventionally attractive, when I look in the mirror, I quite like how I look. I like my proportions. I like the way my eyes curve. I’m not photogenic, and I tend not to like the way I look in photos, so I avoid them. But the artist in me, who like to observe the shapes and forms of the world, has a deep appreciation for the shapes and forms that make up my own face.

That being said, I’ve always had a sneaking suspicion that others treat me differently based on how I look. I’ve never had the feeling that someone was physically attracted to me (I don’t say this to incur pity, I have never longed to be desired in that way). I’ve always valued deeper connections, and sometimes I wonder if people connecting with me beyond physical appearance helps.

But I have wondered if my suspicion is founded. In fact, 2022 gave me the perfect opportunity to test my hypothesis, as I had just flown across the world to begin an internship with a community I’d never met before. It was also when people were still taking the COVID pandemic seriously, in an asian country where masking is normalised, even in non-pandemic times. I masked nearly all the time, and when I mask, you cannot see my nose or mouth which gives me the appearance of a “normal” face.

Many people met me for the first time like this. And I definitely noticed a difference. I was one among many new interns, and compared to other times I’d been part of a new group, I felt people were more curious about me. They lingered longer in our interactions, asked more questions about my background, and made an effort to continue talking to me day after day. I’d heard statistics correlating conventionally attractive people with various metrics of success before, but it was interesting to observe them firsthand.

I remember towards the end of my internship, I’d been driving a group of friends to the beach and had taken off my mask. My friend’s roommate was in the back seat, and must have seen my reflection in the mirror. They audibly gasped, saying something along the lines of ‘that’s what you look like?’. My friend in the passenger seat laughed and replied, “yeah, you’ve never seen her without a mask?”. I didn’t feel they were being insulting, but having a moment of reckoning. They’d realised they’d made certain assumptions about me, which were wrong. I felt a little happy to have been the source of that realisation for them. I too, find myself being surprised by the assumptions we can make when we lack information about people.

It was a fun test to run that summer, and to affirm my own life-long suspicions. I was happy to be validated, and also grateful that I’ve always been secure in my own self-image. I can only imagine the pain I would’ve felt if I weren’t secure, having to face down tangible evidence that people are much more subconsciously shallow than they like to think.

I bought Balls and Gay 3 like a week ago, blacked out, and now I have like three (3) different comic ideas and a vampire boyfriend.

Anyways this is my tav Corvus, lvl 4 human wizard. They were in the middle of their apprenticeship when they were kidnapped onto the nautiloid ship. They’re pretty much just me but a little to the left, so they’re 5ft tall and weigh as much as a kitten wearing a top hat but BY GOD they’ve got spirit ok!? And also apparently they’ve become the de facto leader of this band of much older much more capable warriors?????Somehow???? (No pressure hehehehe fuck). I had fun giving them a cleft lip inspired by the lip scar option in the character creator. I’ve never drawn any cleft lips before though, so if anyone has any advice I’d love some critique!

As I’m typing this I’m learning that BG3 won big at the game awards, so holy shit!!! Congrats to Larian and everyone involved in this amazing game! I’m enjoying it so much and I’m like only a little ways into act 1 <3
