Marti a flor de labios (Marti on the lips) is a portrait of Cuban poet, writer, journalist, philosopher, and activist José Martí by Cuban artist Edel Alvarez Galban (AGalban). The painting was part of the 2023 exhibition El Arte: Echos of Cuba at the Clearwater Library in Florida. Galban emigrated to the United States in 1995, later moving to St. Petersburg, Florida in 2001 where he works in both the medical profession and the arts.

José Martí was born in Havana on January 28th, 1853 and died in 1895 during the Battle of Dos Rios, fighting for Cuba’s independence from Spain. He traveled to Tampa Bay’s Latin Quarter, Ybor City, on several occasions while in exile to give speeches and to raise funds to support his cause.

Parque Amigos de Jose Marti (Friends of Jose Marti Park) in Ybor City features a statue of Martí and a plaque. The land was gifted to the Republic of Cuba in 1956 and was once home to the boarding house of Afro-Cuban activist Paulina Pedroso. She was friends with Martí and he stayed with her during his visits to the area.

Collarbones- Perciver

Oliver has a problem. 

It’s not necessarily a big problem, like that time he’d agreed to help nana with her christmas cooking and nearly burned down the kitchen, or that time da had introduced him to his new girlfriend and he’d puked on her shoes. But it’s still a problem. 

The thing is, Oliver is a simple man. He likes straightforward classes, like potions and defense, and he likes quidditch because it’s a simple game that requires complex thinking. Most of all, he likes Percy Weasley- but Percy Weasley is not a simple man, and Oliver spends an inordinate amount of time trying to figure him out. 

It’s a long term project, but Oliver is not opposed to hard work, and Percy is worth it, always has been. That’s not the problem, not at all. 

The problem is that somewhere along the line being friends with Percy turned into falling hopelessly, madly in love with Percy, and now Oliver can’t even study in the library with him without daydreaming about biting his collarbones.

Fuck. The collarbones are just there, okay? They’re exposed by the scoop neck of his Weasley sweater the way they never are when he wears his robes and his school shirt, and it turns out Oliver’s weakness- besides just Percy in general- is apparently an extra inch of creamy white skin sprinkled with freckles, and the small hollow where Percy’s shoulder meets his neck.

He wants to lick it. He wants to bite it. He wants to snog Percy Weasley absolutely senseless and figure out what will make him gasp and squirm and agree to be his boyfriend. 

Unfortunately, Percy has never once given even the slightest inclination that he might be on board with such ideas, and so Oliver is not about to say any of that out loud, ever, not even if Penelope Clearwater makes good on her threat to lock them in a broom cupboard so they’ll ‘finally stop dancing around each other and admit they’re arse-over-tits for each other’(her words, not his). Penelope is kind of weird, but Oliver likes her anyway. For one, she’s Percy’s best friend, and for another the fact she thinks it’s even possible Percy might like him back is extremely flattering, even if it couldn’t possibly be true.

“-ie? Ollie?” 

He blinks and Percy is looking at him, brow wrinkled in concern, his blue eyes as sharply intelligent as ever, even though the bags under his eyes seem etched into his skin. Percy’s insomnia has been one of Oliver’s main worries since first years, and now that Percy’s got the prefect position it’s only gotten worse.

“You okay?” Percy’s voice is deeper than one would expect, and slightly gravelly because of all the cigarettes he smokes. Sometimes, he’ll read out loud before they put the lights out in the dorm, and it’s Oliver’s favourite sound in the world, “You seem distracted. Well- more distracted than usual.”

He grins, propping an elbow on the desk beside his arithmancy books, and the movement makes the divot of his collarbone even more pronounced. Oliver curses whatever deity or creature Penelope must have convinced to torment him, and tries not to whimper.

“Me? Distracted? Never.”

He tries to meet teasing with teasing but it sounds too breathless to be truly convincing. Luckily, Percy doesn’t press, just shrugs elegantly and turns back to his books.

“Alright.”

Oliver goes back to staring at him over his copy of Numerology and Grammatica Level Five. 

Deep red curls glow under the warm light from the lanterns, framing high cheekbones and brushing over Percy’s perfectly round ears. A delicate nose balances out a strong jaw, and plush, slightly chapped pink lips part to show a flash of pink tongue caught between Percy’s teeth. 

Oliver wishes said tongue was caught between his teeth. 

Fuck.

He should go back to reading. The assignment is due in three days, and reading takes him longer than it should, all things considered. Instead, he goes back to looking at Percy’s collarbones rather than his face. It seems safer. Marginally. 

The collarbones are still exquisite. Oliver still very much wants to bite them. It’s still a problem.

“Do I have something on my shirt?”

“W-what?” Oliver jumps, caught, and tries very hard not to look guilty, “No. Why?”

“You’re staring at it rather intently,” Percy tugs at his collar, pulling his sweater out to examine it, showing off even more skin and causing Oliver’s brain to melt, which is why he says what he says next.

“I’m not staring at your sweater, I'm staring at your collarbones.”

In the time it takes him to realize what he said and slap a horrified hand over his mouth so he can’t say anything even more life ruining, Percy turns about twelve different shades of red, his mouth dropping open.

“You-I-my-what?”

“Nothing!” Oliver jumps up, fully intending to go throw himself into the lake and let the giant squid eat him, “I’m staring at nothing! Sorry I-”

“Oliver Benjamin Wood,” Percy says, and it’s his prefect voice, the one that makes Oliver shiver in a multitude of ways, but that also leaves no room for argument, ever, “sit down and tell me why you’re looking at my collarbones.”

Oliver drops back into his seat, shaking his head mutinously. 

Percy takes a step towards him, face still glowing like the sunrise. Oliver cringes and contemplates attempting apparition even though he’s never tried before and it also doesn’t work in Hogwarts.

Then, Percy does something absolutely, entirely, completely evil. He takes another step closer and leans it, breath ghosting over Oliver’s face, and whispers, “please?”

Oliver caves.

“BecauseIwanttobitethem.” 

Oliver didn’t think it was possible for Percy to go any redder, but somehow he manages it. Distantly, he wonders if he should be worried about Percy’s health.

“You…want to bite my collarbones?”

Oliver can only nod helplessly, still reeling from the feeling of Percy’s breath on his cheek, and those blue, blue eyes boring into his soul.

“Right,” Percy exhales a deep breath, and nods, his face rapidly retuning to normal except for a slight pink tinge over his cheekbones, “okay. Let’s go.”

He holds out a hand. Oliver stares.

“What?”

“Let’s go.” Percy huffs, but he’s grinning, eyes twinkling mysteriously in a way that has haunted Oliver’s fantasies for years.

“Go where?”

Is Percy going to murder him in the forbidden forest? Turn him into McGonagall for being a creeper? Sick Penelope on him?

“Back to the dorm," Percy says, like it's obvious, "so you can bite my collarbones and I can lick that freckle on your neck.”

“What?” It’s Oliver’s turn to choke. He can picture the scene, the two of them intertwined on his bed, Percy’s curls tickling his nose as his mouth drags over- nope. Can’t think of that in public, can’t think of that in public. “You- you want to lick my neck?”

“Have for ages.” Percy sighs and that- that does it.

Oliver jumps from his seat and seizes Percy’s hand, tugging them towards the door. 

“Yep, alright, let's go, let’s go right now.”

Percy laughs and trips after him, casting a summoning charm over his shoulder so their books pack themselves up and follow them back to Gryffindor tower. Not that it really matters. They aren’t going to do much studying for the rest of the day, at least not if Oliver has anything to say about it. He’s got far more important things to do.

Save Our Florida State Parks From Developers Staff members of the Division of Recreation and Parks are apparently set to scatter across the state — from Miami to the Panhandle — for meetings scheduled from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. that Tuesday. Meetings for six parks in Eastern Standard Time will occur simultaneously. Meetings at two Panhandle-area parks, in a different time zone, will start an hour later. There appears to be no virtual option for any of the meetings listed on the state’s public notice. Dade City's Heritage and Cultural Museum Moves to the Spoke Building Temporarily

The Dade City Heritage and Cultural Museum was begun in 2018 by Joy Lynn and family at the old Atlantic Coastline Railroad depot in eastern Dade City, which is on the US National Register of Historic Places.  This community museum has temporarily moved some of its exhibits to "The Spoke" community center at the corner of Church Street and the Hardy Trail. It will be staffed during the summer by Museum volunteers from 10 am to 2 pm Tuesday through Saturday.  The Heritage and Cultural Museum was Begun in The Depot Through efforts by the City and its residents, the Depot was transformed into the Dade City Heritage and Cultural Museum in 2018, where it now houses artifacts, photographs, documents, and records of historic places and longtime residents of Dade City.   Dade City's Train Depot, beautifully restored, and now the Cultural and Heritage Museum. According to the Tampa Bay Times, the Depot station was preserved and reopened as a tourist destination on October 23, 2008.   The Museum consists of a main exhibition space, a model train room, and a Community Archive and Reading Room, where residents can research Dade City's people and history at the Depot property. The museum is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit and maintains close ties to the city of Dade City. Dade City's Heritage and Cultural Museum Moves to the Spoke Building Temporarily The Spoke building is adjacent to the Hardy Trail, at the intersection of Church Street. Having displays in the Spoke helps to keep the building and the museum vibrant while road construction is blocking the Depot location. Image by Richard Riley. The location puts The Dade City Historical and Cultural Museum right in the center of town.  The Hardy Trail goes alongside the east, including a "Little Library" supported by Hugh Embry Library.  Compared to The Depot, the much smaller "Spoke" building is now used for displays by local merchants on one side and historic displays brought from the Depot building on the other side.  Both displays will be rotating.  The Spoke building fronts Church Street and is 100 feet from the Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce.  Behind it will be the new "Water Event / Splash Pad" being constructed by the City of Dade City.  There is parking for scores of vehicles between the two events.  A five-passenger electric cart with comfortable seats and awning is used for Friday and Saturday tours of the historic highlights of Dade City.  Walking tours are also available.  Contributions are appreciated. US 98/301 Construction Blocks Access to the Depot Building According to Museum Director, Joy Lynn, the depot building was empty in 1998 and provided an opportunity for the community.  Many safety concerns were addressed by the City of Dade City during those renovations.  The main entrance with handicapped access was rebuilt. Image by Diane Bedard. Coincidentally this site is adjacent to the previous, now removed, pre-1980 Seaboard Air Line rail station in western Dade City.  Both rail lines were created by Henry B. Plant for the Seaboard, and Henry F. Flanger for the Atlantic.  From 1890, three rail lines served the area including the Orange Belt Railway from Sanford to Clearwater via Trilby, just to the north.   Today, adjacent to the Depot, the CSX "S-Line," a modern 1980 combination of the ACL and SAL, goes through with freight service to Tampa. Could you write about the first crushes of all the Weasleys?

Bill Weasley thinks he’s in love one day when he walks into his Transfiguration classroom and sees a gorgeous blonde girl sitting beside the chair he normally occupies. There’s a blue-and-bronze tie around her neck, tied in a perfect Windsor knot, and jewels drip from her ears and neck. She moves her stuff to her side of the desk when he sits down, and is careful not to touch him at all. He’d wonder about it, but she’s very quiet in class in general, though is always quick to finish her work. He smiles at her sometimes, but she doesn’t smile back. (He does not realize she is a Malfoy until two terms in, when he hears her friends whispering to her about blood traitors and how their taint can be associated upon upstanding citizens so easily. He doesn’t speak to her, although his heart still quickens a few beats around her in class, and she never gets the nerve to start any conversation with him either.)

Charlie Weasley doesn’t think he’s had a proper crush on anybody, but the new Professor (for DADA, of course) is probably the most attractive member of faculty Hogwarts has ever had and he can certainly appreciate this. He’s always more passionate about Care of Magical Creatures and Quidditch, yet he pays a lot more attention that year for DADA and ignores his friends’ playful teasing. (It’s his NEWT year anyway - he should be paying attention.) He stays behind in class to ask questions, sometimes over concepts he actually already knows. But there is no quickening of the heartbeat, no fantasies of kissing or holding hands or dancing in the rain. When the year passes, he graduates and the professor quits (because of course this one couldn’t stay), but the first dragon baby he finds is named after the professor that smiled at him in class.

Percy Weasley walks into the library one day for a book he desperately needs, and gets told the final copy has been taken by this girl named Penelope Clearwater. He sees her reading it and slides into the seat beside her, asking quietly if she would mind sharing this book with him, and realizes she is in his classes. He doesn’t think much of this encounter, but then she starts chatting to him in class and during their Prefect patrols the next year. That’s when he starts to crush on this pretty Ravenclaw girl who always seems to have interesting thoughts on anything and everything. He asks her out for a drink at Hogsmeade after they hide from Peeves together in an abandoned classroom, book in his hand, and she says yes.

Fred Weasley was not a fan of Gobstones (the putrid liquid that got sprayed whenever he lost a point being the main reason) but when he gets challenged by a Slytherin student he’s never met before, he takes up their offer instantly. They have a quick series of games, in which he both wins and loses in alternate turns, and by the end of the final game he’s laughing along to a joke about the staircases. (He’s never laughed with people from other houses before, it takes him too long to realize this.) He stares at the green-and-silver tie around their neck a little too often from then on, and stops playing pranks on Slytherin just for a few days, but never plays with them after that day. (He does, however, use his first bit of money from his shop to purchase his own Gobstones - and when they walk into the shop, he always makes sure to help them out.)

George Weasley has always, always appreciated Angelina Johnson. At first for her beauty and talent in Quidditch, and then for her ability to joke around and rough-house just as well as any of his siblings could. They fly around the pitch, and when they’re so high up he can appreciate the glow of her skin in the sunlight and the way her braids whip around in the wind. Once, he offered her a ribbon to tie her hair up, carefully not telling her that he’d spent four days learning how to conjure one just for this purpose, and she’d kissed his cheek before asking if he knew how to braid hair. (Of course he did, he had a sister and a mother who both regularly called upon the men in the family to help with hairstyles.) He dances with her at the Yule Ball, explaining that Fred had asked on his behalf as he was too afraid to, and she throws her head back and laughs that he’d never been scared of her as a Chaser when she actually had to throw Quaffles around. They kiss that night for the first time. He never kisses any other girl.

Ron Weasley doesn’t think the bushy-haired, buck-toothed girl on the Hogwarts Express is all that pretty, at first. She’s a motormouth with a weird name that regurgitates entirely too many syllables in a few seconds. She does kind of impress him with her knowledge about magic and his new friend (the Boy-Who-Lived, he reminds himself), but she really needs to learn how to hold actual conversations. And yet she has the prettiest brown eyes on anyone he’s ever met, he can admit, and she’d probably be nice to be friends with. He watches her leave, not knowing that he has a little smile on his face. (Friends. Ha. When he sweeps her off her feet seven years later, he still thinks she has the prettiest eyes he’s ever seen.)

Ginny Weasley curls up in bed, each breath seemingly ripped from her in long, shuddering gasps as tears stream down her face. Her memory is finally returned to her and she has never felt worse. She’s been told that nobody blames her for being possessed (by Voldemort, for Merlin’s sake), but she’s been the reason students were petrified and exams were cancelled. She was also the reason behind her brother rushing into the Chamber with Harry Potter...oh, Harry. The boy she’d dreamed of and written into that diary for so many days. (Please don’t let him be put into danger because of me. I didn’t know who I was talking to. I didn’t realize the diary was evil. Please let him be spared from my mistakes.) She wonders idly how he’d ever think of her as anything but a weak-minded child now. She’d scrubbed her hands raw trying to erase the blood and ink on her skin, and nothing’s worked. They wouldn’t be fit to hold his, not when she’d let the hands of his parents’ murderer slip beneath her skin and permeate her bones. But it would have been sweet, she thinks bitterly, if it could have been me. If it could have been her that had stood by him. Her that had been his friend. Her that hadn’t been tainted by Voldemort. If it could have been, really.

WALLET — a black leather bifold. long and thin. simple and sleek. he always gravitates towards a similar piece whenever the previous one succumbs to the wear and tear of use. this one is likely already cracking along its outer crease, but only enough to be noticed by the owner himself. the contents inside are fairly run-of-the mill : a Bank of America checkbook. a debit and credit card to match. a small black ballpoint pen. cash tucked into the opposite pocket, just to keep on hand ( some singles and fives and a pair of twenties ). Anthem Blue Cross and Medicare insurance cards. a New York state driver’s license that expired in ‘72, tucked behind a Maine state driver’s license that expired in 2014, tucked behind yet another Maine state ID, this one recently renewed ---  even despite the dramatic age difference in all the photos, those doe eyes never stop sparkling through the years. a half-spent gift card for his favorite ice cream shop on the mainland. a Portland, Maine public library card. a couple crinkled receipts that he has yet to log in his check register. a United States passport, first issued in 1959 and adorned over the decades with stamps from Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Spain, Russia, Israel and Syria. he also holds onto his expired original passport, from his family’s immigration, as a keepsake. finally, there’s the St. Christopher / St. Michael visor clip he kept from his NYC cab driving days, slipped over the pocket where he keeps his cash.

perhaps most importantly, he always keeps two photos on hand: 

     the first is his favorite family portrait of the Pruitt-Rossi clan --- his mother, his father, all of his sisters ( including Alice ), and himself at barely 3 years old. taken just before their emigration from Tuscany. the sepia photograph is obviously aged, but has been tended to by careful hands, so that the portrait’s visibility remains in-tact.

     the second? verse-dependent. in his Far Cry verse it’s a candid photo of his wife, Sarah Pruitt ( née Harper ) and their baby boy, Sigur, when he was but a few years old. the both of them smiling wide and mounted on the back of Sarah’s mare, Mara. a moment of sweet reprieve and domestic bliss, captured somewhere in the Whitetail Mountains before the Reaping. in the verses of his main timeline ( and just about every other verse ), it’s a candid of Missus Mildred Gunning which he too shot himself. Millie is joyfully looking down at her ( their ) three-week-old daughter Sarah, just after her Baptism, with happy tears brimming in her eyes. John managed to keep himself together that day, allowing his own tears to flow at last in the privacy of the rectory.

it’s a long way down, a long way down - a holy hell au inspired by the creep series

there are stories are stories on stories on stories about matches made in heaven. about two pure souls destined for the other, finally reaching a ‘happily ever after’ after going through trials and tribulations that, honestly, are played out and boring.

that’s exactly what fergus macleod would tell you, anway.

he’s been inhabiting his mortal coil for a few decades now, engaging in his favorite activity--serial murder.

but lately, something has--gone out.

he’s lost his light. his passion for killing.

so he gets an idea, and puts out an ad for a videographer.

he’ll make a documentary, he decides. a magnum opus to relight the blood and the violence that had brought him so much joy over the years.

what he didn’t expect was andi.

not her beauty. not her courage. not her wit, sharp enough to make a god bleed.

and not her fangs, and a thirst to rival his--even if her moral compass was a bit more lawful.

(these--particular films are not easy watches, though i personally enjoy them. the sequel is my favorite, but remember when i said ‘explicit sexuality’ in the first warning post? the especially applies to creep 2. when i imagined this au it was less in-line with the main narrative of the movies and more, say, a meet-cute story you’d overhear at an addams’ family function.)

red sun rises like an early warning - an ancient cares au inspired by sleepy hollow

sleepy hollow was often called a “sleepy” village, in the way that meant that nothing ever happened there. marie van tassel, daughter of the richest man in town--and immediately intrigued by the arrival of one police constable walter vaughn, sent all the way from new york city--would disagree. especially in recent years.

the headless horseman had returned.

and marie, for all the occult studying she’d done far from the gaze of her father’s watchful eyes, still so haunted after her mother���s brutal and untimely passing--couldn’t figure out why.

she knew exactly who he was. what he was. but why had he returned? what had woken him?

and could see really be that mournful, when it had sprung start the machinations of fate that brought walter right to her doorstep?

“i have shed my tears for boom... and yet my heart is not broken. do you think me wicked?”

“no... but perhaps there is a little bit of witch in you, marie.”

“walter, why do you say that?”

“because you have bewitched me.”

it was only five years into the birth of an entirely new century, and her twin brother had been taken; her father, lost in his grief, was utterly useless.

it was all up to parker jensen.

she found a fake pass easy enough, slyly dancing her way through conversations with began with “you know, i don’t remember seeing you at any of the prayer meetings...” until finally, finally, they reached that accursed island.

she’d never been to wales before.

she had no idea what to expect.

what are you supposed to expect, when you’re all alone on a solo rescue mission going toe-to-toe with what can only be described as a cult?

but ivar--son of the enigmatic priest of the island, malcolm--was a nice surprise.

the only nice surprise that she’d find.

it wasn’t until she caught jeremy, sneaking home after what she could only guess had something to do with ffion, that she got her first flash of what would be a more and more grisly truth.

this island had its own god.

and something much more sinister than genesis had happened on this soil.

it was supposed to be like a vacation. diana hadn’t had one in at least fifteen years. vida, even longer.

so why not hiking? why not the kungsleden--the king’s trail--in northern sweden?

the first two days were bliss. nothing but rolling hills, clear skies. up until:

“ah fuck!”

“vida--shit, vida, are you okay?”

“yeah, i’m--urk!”

“all right, that was not a reassuring noise, let’s have a look at that--”

vida’s left knee went from pink to a swollen blue to an agonized, deep purple tinged with green over the course of next day. diana couldn’t bear to watch her struggle to keep up, especially when this was supposed to be a romantic break, nothing as taxing as the fieldwork happening back home.

by the light of a campfire, diana studied their map, humming. “what if we just cut through the forest?” she asked. “if we just went as the crow flies... it cuts the time in half. and you need medical attention, vida, we can’t keep going on like this.”

“has the battalion cleared this area?” vida returned her question with one of her own, eyes shining. the reflection of the fire made them look like stones polished by a river. “we wouldn’t run into anything, would we?”

diana smiled. “nothing we couldn’t handle, love, i’m sure.”

and diana didn’t change her mind when they set off the next morning... up until they found the disembowled carcass of an elk, placed up high in a tree like a religious icon.

she thought of morgan.

“diana, what--what put that up there? something had to have put that up there!”

it was just that caroline janson had been in therapy for so long... she was no longer sure what of shards of her memories were real, and what would be, as dr. ward would say, hallucinations.

but she knew one thing: she was glad to be coming home.

“i hope chicken’s okay for your first night back,” parker began gently. “i’m just now realizing i forgot to ask--”

caroline smiled at her, “chicken would be great.”

she watched parker’s profile, as she opened her mouth, then closed it, then opened it again. finally, she inhaled, then began, “you know... carter’s missed you since you’ve been gone...”

caroline rolled her eyes. “parker. it’s been a decade and a half. i seriously doubt it.”

“hey, who knows my brother better right now, me or you?”

that earned a huff... and a grin. subdued, but still there. “... okay. fine. but... maybe not tonight.” parker glanced at her once, and nodded.

“i understand. besides, maybe i want you all to myself for the first few days, anybody think about that?”

and caroline laughed.

and she wished that it felt like she wasn’t still being haunted.

it was hardly tilde’s idea to spend thanksgiving alone harvard. but between the pandemic, the weather, and her own growing agitation at her father’s behavior...

it just seemed easier.

and it wasn’t all bad. she still had prudence, who opted to stay with her out of love (and perhaps a lack of family--but she didn’t ask). and they had run of essentially the entire campus--there were several buildings that stayed opened, even over the holiday. the library being one.

but it wasn’t until one night, when they made a late night trip to a convenience store not far from tilde’s housing that things became... strange.

“pru. ... pru!” she whispered, snacks in one hand, the other on pru’s elbow. “... i think she’s following us.”

“she?” pru asked, lowly, careful to keep her eyes down, as if they were just having a very, very difficult time decided on what kind of poptarts they wanted.

tilde, face oddly blanched, couldn’t find her voice, so she just nodded.

at the end of the aisle, a figure in dark hoodie and skinny jeans passed out of view.

one of pru’s arms went around tilde’s waist. “don’t worry. i’m sure she’s just here at the same time as us. it’s a small store.”

tilde would remember that when she got home in time to find a snuff film loaded onto her laptop.

“oh shit--oh shit, oh god--!”

this is why she preferred halloween.

Stardom surged for Tom Cruise in 1983 when he was 19 and slid into the hallway in Risky Business. Now in his fourth decade as one of the world’s most successful and wealthy actors, Tom owns homes in Beverly Hills; Clearwater, Florida and a 320-acre ranch in Telluride, Colorado that he helped design and is now for sale at $39.5 million.

The Telluride home holds a lot of history for Cruise. It is where he enjoyed time with his children and much of his marriage to Katie Holmes. It was also the location of his last major interview with Oprah, a follow-up to Tom’s exuberant couch-jumping episode with Oprah in 2005. Oprah was so taken with the Cruise ranch and its views that she later bought her own home nearby.

The first impression of Tom’s home driving up the mile-long driveway from the gated entrance is the staggering view of the mountains and valleys. Designed to take full advantage of the views, the 11,512-square-foot living space includes the 10,000-square-foot, four-bedroom main house and a three-bedroom guest house.

Blending in with its wooded surroundings, the structures are clad in rustic-bleached- cedar timbers and native stone with beamed ceilings and large expanses of glass. In addition to a large eat-in kitchen, living room and dining room that will seat a crowd, there is a gym, recreation room and library. Detached and in its own aspen grove is the charming guest house. Combined, there are a total of seven bedrooms and nine full baths.

The grounds are equally impressive in all seasons. Outside is a sports court for tennis, basketball or ice hockey and a private trail system with access to and views of the 14,000-foot-high mountains in the distance with a private gate into the Uncompahgre National Forest. There are hiking and riding trails and both dirt bike and snowmobile tracks which thread throughout the 320 acres.

Telluride has long been a destination for celebrities who like to ski or just get away and chill from their high-octane professional lives and now is even more popular for second-home buyers during the pandemic. Other stars who also find Telluride to be a great getaway include Robert Redford, Jerry Seinfeld, and designer-to-the-stars Ralph Lauren.

As with most famous celebrities, Tom has claimed his share of the gossip pages whether it be over his marriages, children or film-role formulas. However, as the reviewers of his award-winning films agree, it doesn’t matter what he says or does or the latest gossip, Cruise is one of the few actors who can be cast in any film with any script and will likely take the film to the top of the box office ratings. Working around the constraints of Covid-19, Tom’s upcoming films are Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7. He is well known for taking risks for his films, even doing his own risky stunts. Rumor has it that he will be going up in Elon Musk’s Space-X rocket to the space station to film Mission: Impossible 7.

9: Dream trip: Roadtrip through Canada again (did that in 2016 with my aunt and cousin, but didn't really get far as they wanted to chill rather than explore 🙄), Alaska, Iceland and Antarctica.

Languages you speak: German and English fluent, little French from three years at school, about three sentences of Italian (was actually the first foreign language I learned in primary school, way before English, lol) and though I guess you don't speak it, you just know it: Latin (I just want to show off)

About me: I was born with way too many teeth. I had six wisdom teeth.

About anything: canvas bags and the like are only more environmentally friendly than plastic bags if you use them more than 300 times due to the amount of resources going into their production.

14. Cats or dogs: used to be a cat person, but then we found our dog abandoned by the side of the road 9 years ago and since I've become a dog person.

“Ybor’s Colonel”, Acrylic on canvas

The images above are from El Arte: Echoes of Cuba a group exhibition on view at Clearwater’s Main Library this past summer that included the work of Tampa Bay artist Lynn Rattray. The work is part of her ongoing project creating portraits of the Historic Ybor City chickens. Each work she creates includes a biography of the bird.

Information on Ybor’s Colonel from the exhibition-

“In 2016, a law was broken. In the dark of night, a dingy bedraggled rooster was dropped off in the streets of Ybor City. Thrown away by his owner, he had little chance of survival in the feral community and his future seemed bleak.

Fast forward: He ascended to become the superstar of Centennial Park. Soon stunning in both appearance and character, he was dubbed, The Colonel, and a group of diverse humans became his fan club. Our Colonel was the guardian of baby chicks and new mama hens, protecting the little families from danger. Now when this artist sits in the silence of the park, she still feels the magic of our Colonel and sheds a tear for a life well lived.”

More detail on the Ybor City chicken project from her artist statement-

…A portion of her portfolio is dedicated to the free roaming chickens of Historic Ybor City. “Why chickens”, you might ask. The history of these beautiful birds dates back to 1885, when Tampa’s cigar industry was first established by Vincent Martinez Ybor. Moving his industry first from Cuba to Key West, he ultimately rebuilt in Tampa. His hopeful workers brought their families, and their chickens, from Key West, dreaming of a new and prosperous future. When the Great Depression hit that same year, the economy crashed and the cigar factories shuttered their doors.

Forced to seek new opportunities, the workers moved on, leaving their chickens behind to fend for themselves. Having adapted to life on the streets, the descendants of those original birds proudly remain in Tampa’s Historic Ybor City, linking us all to that bygone era. It’s the descendants of these original chickens that Lynn paints. Having spent much time observing the chickens, it is each bird’s personality that she seeks to capture, as much as the likeness. Working hand-in-hand with Dylan Breese, founder of Ybor Chicken’s Society, and The Ybor Misfits Micro-Sanctuary, (@theybormisfits), a recently established 503(1)(c) non-profit designed to help sick and injured chickens.

This collaboration assures that each portrait reflects not only the likeness but more importantly, the personality of the bird.

Rattray has a studio in the Kress Contemporary building in Ybor City and it is often open to the public. There you can find more of her chicken portraits as well as see the other charming paintings she is working on.

Workamping in Florida - Save Our Florida State Parks from Developers

Staff members of the Division of Recreation and Parks are apparently set to scatter across the state — from Miami to the Panhandle — for meetings scheduled from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. that Tuesday. Meetings for six parks in Eastern Standard Time will occur simultaneously. Meetings at two Panhandle-area parks, in a different time zone, will start an hour later. There appears to be no virtual option for any of the meetings listed on the state’s public notice.

If somebody wants to make a comment about the changes coming to a state park and they can make the meeting, they’ll have three minutes. Below are the times and locations for each state park proposal.
