'...Maricel Pagulayan, a Fil-Am Visual Effects Producer, won an Emmy this year for the single episode in "Ripley" entitled "Ill Sommerso" on Netflix. Pagulayan is known for her work on "Valkyrie" (2008), "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" (2004), and "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" (2015)...
Congratulations on your Emmy win for "Ripley" on the "Ill Sommerso" episode! What is the significance of this win for you?
It's been a long journey on "Ripley." We shot at the end of COVID-19 in Italy starting in April 2021 as the world and industry were in the midst of tremendous change.
How did you get the gig on "Ripley"?
Line Producer, Clayton Townsend and I worked briefly on a budget for a Sony show. Then he reached out as he started prepping for "Ripley."
How was it working with filmmaker Steven Zaillian? Have you worked with him before?
I had not worked with Steve before, but I had heard so much about his work ethic and his previous shows as a writer, director and producer. Hard not to think of "Schindler's List." He's a good guy.
So, did you work in Italy as well?
Yes.
How was that experience and how long were you there?
May 2021 to March 2022. Lovely to work in Italy, it was a dream to work with an Italian crew in beautiful locations. VFX work on "Ripley" is what I call "invisible effects". The audience should not know we shot today for period 1960's and of course the water work in "Ill Sommerso."
What challenges did you encounter in doing the visual effects on this show considering that Zaillian wanted it in black and white?
We always knew black and white was Steve and Robert, DP's preference. We managed a dual color and B/W workflow. It's a much more complicated workflow from shoot to post final but very much worth it.
Did you get to meet the cast – Andrew Scott, Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn? How were they? Any memorable experiences?
I worked with all the cast – every day. All the water work with Andrew and Johnny was memorable. Working in water is always a challenge. Dakota was a true professional...'

'The Equalizer 3' - The Best of the Trilogy
The first two “Equalizer” movies directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington were effective action flicks, but much of what happened in them did not stay in my brain for very long. The most I can remember is that Denzel played Robert McCall who, when he starts the timer on his digital watch, is gifted at leaving his opponents in a world of immense pain in about five seconds’ time.…

Just remembered I never posted these: designs of the characters from Ayreon's The Human Equation, part of a project that I named "The Character Equation", which consists on making a design for every Ayreon character ever (AT SOME POINT. Whenever I don't have dangerously close deadlines. I'm going to be taking my sweet time with this.)
They are heavily inspired on the costume design for The Theater Equation, but they are modeled after the singers in the studio album and their designs are more simple since I tackled these with a comic-making mentality (so, nothing too complex in case you had to draw these designs over and over again in multiple pages and panels).
I go over the process of most of these on these videos! I still have to finish a third one... eventually... but things kept coming up and I had to leave video-making aside.

Here are some recs to read in lieu of the Boy Wizard series.
I asked my followers for recommendations on what to read instead of That Series™ and y'all definitely delivered. I included my own recs with little descriptions and most of the others are either on my tbr or completely new to me. I made sure to list whether it was a middle grade or young adult read.
I only put two of my favorite Diana Wynne Jones books on here, but anything she's written has magic in some form or fashion.
Books listed:
My personal favorites:
Slide 2: The Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones (middle grade); A 7 book middle grade series that follows the world of the Chrestomanci—a nine-lived enchanter who oversees the use of magic. The 7 books follow different characters that all intersect with one another. Did I mention there are parallel worlds?
Slide 3: Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones (middle grade); Seen the movie? The book is just like that but far more chaotic. It's still whimsical, but there's more depth and development. It's nostalgic even if you haven't read it before. It's also book 1 of a trilogy.
Slide 4: The Earthsea Cycle by Ursula K. LeGuin (young adult); A series of 6 books that follows the wizard Ged. Very reminiscent of Lord of the Rings to me, but in a more approachable way. (Idk, I haven't read LotR. I've just seen the movies.)
Slide 5: The Redwall Series by Brian Jacques (middle grade); A 22 book series featuring talking animals as protagonists, this series set mainly around Redwall Abbey has something for everyone. The books don't have to be read in order, but publication order is suggested.
Slide 6: Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan (middle grade); A retelling of Greek myths. Neurodivergent rep, badass kids, humorous, and so full of heart! This series (and the others) aren't just for kids. I got into them late in the game (maybe early high school?) and revisited them as an adult and they're so good! Perfect for anyone wanting to dive into mythology.
Slide 7: TBR/Follower Recs (MG): Witchlings by Claribel Ortega, Nevermoore by Jessica Townsend, The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
Slide 8: TBR/Follower Recs (MG): The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton, Fablehaven by Brandon Mull, Septimus Heap by Angie Sage
Slide 9: TBR/Follower Recs (YA): Alanna the First Adventure by Tamora Pierce, Little Black Bird by Anna Kirchner, Young Wizards Series by Diane Duane (falls between MG & YA)
Slide 10: TBR/Follower Recs (YA): Summoner Series by Taran Matharu, Inkheart by Cornelia Funke (trilogy), The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper

some stuff i read and watched in september:
my brilliant friend (s1-3): had a bit of ferrante fever and rinsed through this, i think it's v well done as an adaptation -- it's been so long since i read the first couple of books that the casting of the lads made them feel much more vivid than i remembered, also i Need to go to florence
foundation (s2): honestly entertainment peaked with deranged space emperor clone lee pace spitting blood in ben daniels' face and snarling i fucking love it, hope to see it back in 2-3 years probably!
the gold: finally got around to this bc they were talking about it on the watch lol, very cool the way it sort of sprawls out from the original heist and just keeps going, classic dcoop sketchiness, still mulling over casting jack lowden as lymond bc what other blonde scottish actors even are there
starstruck (s3): ROSE MATAFEO FOREVER etc. this season pretty much an anti-romcom which i'm on board with, the friendship stuff fucked me up, not to get into but phew re: being single in your thirties while all your friends are having kids etc
passages: really liked this but somehow didn't love it quite as much as i expected to, franz ben adele perfect, whishaw really come full circle since basically playing the franz role in cock at the royal court lol, beautiful knitwear outfits homewares
the best years of our lives: like 3 hours long but doesn't feel it, quietly devastatingly empathetic story of returning ww2 veterans, i need to watch the five come back series on netflix bc william wyler is so so good
a haunting in venice: i would also like to go to venice, kenbran's having fun at least my dutch angle king, i hope they keep letting him make these forever although i also rewatched tenet and nothing here tops the part where he jogs slowly backwards through time
the broken hearts gallery: the best of a bunch of recent-ish romances i watched, geraldine viswanathan is a Star
michael clayton: somehow hadn't seen this before but very satisfying like corporate thriller, tom wilkinson and tilda are great, i want to rewatch andor now
elena ferrante, the story of the lost child: finally finished the neapolitan novels, fuck me up elena. can't think of a comparable series of like adult novels that go this hard for me, maybe st aubyn? yowl
colin walsh, kala: this ripped actually, loved like the irish specificity of the voices
james frankie thomas, idlewild: literally took critical damage every time i had to read the word HoYay but this was great and painful about like being a horrible little queer teenager and codependent friendships and livejournal and annotated fanfiction etc
marilynne robinson, gilead: ow i loved this, i think it's a real skill to make like goodness compelling, looking forward to being devastated by the rest of the series etc
sylvia townsend warner, lolly willowes: 🧙‍♀️🍂🌝
katie kitamura, intimacies: more things should be set at the courts in the hague tbh! made me think about translation a lot and also black earth rising
cat sebastian, we could be so good: sometimes you just want to read a gay romance about being in love with your best friend innit
operation mincemeat: omg i actually went to the theatre, this was silly and very much The British Hamilton but i loved it and i cried and i ordered drinks to my seat, 5 stars etc
the effect: i didn't see the original billie piper staging but i love lucy prebble and i loved this cast, literally paapa essiedu can do anything, kobna holdbrook smith reminded me that i should carry on with the rivers of london audibooks, one in a long list of signs that i should probably talk to someone about my mental health lol

"My deepest thanks for your acknowledgment that Vietnam is not over, although some people say it is. But that Vietnam is a state of mind that continues all over the world for as long as men in his [sic] quest for power interfere in the affairs of other men. So many thanks to give tonight. I want to give it to Ron Kovic for his largeness of heart. And to Tom Cruise, for making Ron's dream come true. And to a great supporting cast in that true, thankless meaning of the word. To a crew that never failed: to Bob Richardson, and Bruno Rubeo, David Brenner, John Williams, Alex Ho, Clayton Townsend, Joe Reidy. To the people of Dallas, Texas. To the warm people of the Philippines. To Tom Pollock and Universal Pictures. To Wylie and Mike Minkler. To Paula Wagner, my guardian angel. And to Elizabeth, my naijo no ko. Thank you for this night."
