Gwen Stacy: Spider-Woman (Vol. 1) Issue #3
A young man stood alone in a Manhattan bank. His hands trembled in his pockets, and nervous sweat ran down his face. This man’s name was Adam Webber, and he was there to rob the bank.
It was not a well-planned crime, but a desperate one. He needed the money for his family and was out of options. Due to a previous incarceration, he could not find work. No one trusted him. He did not want to rob the bank, but he was trying to work up the courage.
The situation took a turn when the main doors were blown off their hinges. Everyone now looked at a costumed criminal with a high-tech blaster. His costume was mostly black but also white, and he had yellow eyes. On his belt were several buttons that had some function.
“The name is Clash,” this villain announced, “and I am here for all your money. No one is a hero.”
Security guards rushed in and ordered him to surrender. Instead, Clash pressed a button on his belt. Loud audio feedback played through the speakers. Everyone, including Adam and the security guards, collapsed in pain and covered their ears. Clash was unaffected and walked towards the vault.
Unlike Adam, Clash had planned this crime well. He had planned a way to break into the vault. With a press of another button, he set off a hidden sonic weapon within. It was far more powerful than his sonic blaster, making the vault door burst outward with great force. It tumbled end-over-end. It was stopped with a lot of webbing. No one was harmed.
Clash was in the vault collecting as much money as he could carry. All of it was put in a sack slung over his shoulder, a cliche to be sure. When he turned around, there was Spider-Woman with headphones to block out the deafening sound. She used her webbing to yank the sack out of his hands. With both of them unable to hear, she did not give him a quip, but rather just flipped him off.
He pointed his sonic blaster at her, but she web-yanked it out of his hand, then swung it back to hit him in the face. She webbed him to the wall, but he activated a sonic pulse from his suit that freed him and required Gwen to retreat. He picked up his blaster and followed her into the main lobby.
Gwen stuck to the top of a high wall and waited for Clash to see her, then flipped him off with both hands. He shot at her, but she swung to safety. As she passed a speaker, she webbed it up. This sequence continued until all the speakers were blocked and the feedback was silenced. The security guards were able to recover and surround Clash. Gwen landed in front of him.
“It’s over, knock-off Shocker,” Gwen quipped.
“I still have more tricks up my sleeve.”
Gwen’s spider-sense went off and she lept high. Clash activated a powerful sonic burst from his costume to knock down security. He made a break outside, where Captain George Stacy and the police were waiting. Rather than surrendering, the villain turned up the power on his blaster and fired a blast strong enough to flip a cop car. It almost landed on Captain Stacy, but Gwen caught it. She set it down safely.
“He is going to pay for that,” she said to herself before giving chase.
Back in the bank, Adam opened his eyes, but his ears were still ringing. When he lifted his head, he noticed his gun had fallen on the ground. He grabbed it, but then a relatively large spider crawled on his hand. It bit him and caused him pain like two bullet holes. He shook the spider off and ran off with his gun in his pocket.
In the meantime, Clash ran into an alley. Gwen followed, but then Adriana paralyzed her once again. Oddly, it was starting to feel pleasant. When his visage manifested and stroked her chin, she felt bliss but fought against it.
“The time is nearly here,” her queen said softly in her ear. “Join me and-”
Adriana expressed a feeling of great pain then vanished a second before Clash’s sonic weapon hit Gwen. He escaped into the sewers. When Gwen followed, it was too dark and quiet to track him. She sighed and left.
Not long after, Gwen returned to her civilian clothes and headed to her apartment. She could not shake the thoughts about her current situation. What was the plan of her self-titled queen? She needed to find a way to break from her control.
Gwen opened the door and was shocked to find Anya Corazón unconscious on the floor with a large spider biting her neck. It jumped at her, but she crushed it into a turquoise gooey mess in her hand. She knelt next to her friend.
“Anya!?”
In the sewers, Clash was lost and wandered around with only the light emitted from her yellow lenses. Soon he spotted a large spider, then a second. He set his gaze higher and saw a human figure in the distance and thousands upon thousands of spiders heading his way. He screamed at took shots at them, but there were too many. He ran away from them as fast as he could while the shadowy figure grinned brightly.

**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers
Reactions As I Read: ● the opening panel immediately makes me smile. i don't know why. random upside-down Spidey just makes me happy ● yay photographer Spidey! ● Iron Man is really yellow… ● in this version, young Peter Parker is wearing a sweater vest and tie, but this time his classmates are wearing more modern clothes, like t-shirts and jeans. the contrast really emphasizes what a "nerd" he is. I love it! ● things are going… WELL for Peter? prepare for shit to hit the fan in 3… 2… ● Clash/Clayton Cole is perhaps showing us the path Peter could have so easily gone down ● oops, Flash caught Peter sneaking ● omg… Betty Brant ● i do like the colors that accompany Clash everywhere ● HAHA amplifying JJJ's "Sam Hill" (omg just realized I have a cousin named Sam Hill…) ● nice try, Spidey. great fight scene! ● whoa… JJJ apologized to Betty and said to Spidey that he was wrong about him?? this won't last beyond this panel, will it… ● yup, called it ● oof, Peter, you fucked up by "borrowing" everything… ● whew, good issue!
Synopsis: Peter now becomes Spider-Man only to take pictures of other superheroes to sell at the Bugle and his life seems to be back on track. Clash wanting the media coverage that Spider-Man has, attacks the Daily Bugle, but realizing that he does it for notoriety, Jonah declares that he will not have a line, since on the Bugle there is no place for such nonsense. The Amazing Spider-Man (vol. 3) #17: The Graveyard Shift, pt. 2: Trust Issues
Read Date: August 27, 2023 Cover Date: June 2015 ● Writer: Dan Slott ◦ Christos N. Gage ● Penciler: Humberto Ramos ● Inker: Victor Olazaba ● Colorist: Edgar Delgado ● Letterer: Chris Eliopoulos ● Editor: Nick Lowe ●

**HERE BE SPOILERS: Skip ahead to the fan art/podcast to avoid spoilers (👏=didn't like it, 👏👏=it was ok, 👏👏👏=I liked it, 👏👏👏👏=I really liked it!, 👏👏👏👏👏=I loved it!)

● much better! it feels like Slott took his time, didn't focus too much on getting out the cutesy jokes, and actually developed a plot! ● 👏👏👏👏
Synopsis: At May and Jay's apartment, Peter and Anna Maria are having dinner with Jay and Aunt May. May quickly changes the subject and suggests to Peter that he proposes to Anna. Peter nervously drinks water and tries to think of a way to explain his aunt that they are just friends, but Anna simply says that they broke up some time ago and she hasn't been able to find an apartment, to May's annoyance.
As Peter and Anna then go to Parker Industries, she tells him that he is used to his life being complicated that he over complicates things all the time. She suggests that he swings them back to Parker Industries. He protests, but she tells him that people will just assume that Spider-Man is saving her again. He eventually agrees and suggests that they stop some blocks away from Parker Industries as Spider-Man and Parker are no longer supposed to be associates but Anna tells him that no one bought that.
At the Parker Industries Beta Testing Lab, Sajani complains that they are spending time and resources in a super villain prison, pointing out that they always break out and they will be a joke after the first escape. Clayton Cole defends the idea, saying that the point is about reforming the criminals and that Peter hired him because he believes he can do better than his life as Clash and many villains just need a chance like him.
A security guard interrupts them, telling Sajani that the security system has been glitching on and off. She is surprised since she had the system upgraded after the Black Cat broke in. Peter and Anna then arrive and Sajani is more then surprised, since she was supposed to get a text from Peter when he arrived to discuss the budget together. Anna tells her that Peter has a secret door in his lab, which he uses to meet Spider-Man; much to Peter's and Sajani's annoyance.
Anna tells him she doesn't like secrets and that that's why they split up. In the Security Hub, the Ghost has deactivated the phones and internet and sealed all the exits. He considers every employee, from the C.E.O. to the security guard, guilty. The guard then appears to investigate the glitch, and the Ghost tells him that he is setting the world free, starting with him before phasing his arm through the guard's chest.
Back in the Testing Lab, Peter starts testing the security measures for the new prison, including security orbs, S.W.A.T.-bots and hard-light walls. The Ghost then turns the security measures against the employees. Peter tries to override them, but the Ghost appears in a screen and tells him that nothing will work. He admits he is impressed by their work and will have them hold in Parker Industries as he brings it down.
A employee tries to escape and Peter saves him from a bot, which start taking each out. Anna tells them that she is broadcasting a frequency that messes their guidance system, also giving a cover for Peter to use his powers. He then tells the Living Brain to protect the staff and take them to an exit, which he does and starts getting damage. Anna worries and tells Sajani that their secret nano tech project is backed in his memory only since they don't want Peter to find out. The Living Brain makes a way to the secret door in Peter's lab, which Anna tells the staff Spider-Man uses to get his tech to establish a good reason for him to be there. The staff enters while Peter stays to seal the lab and Anna notices Sajani isn't with them.
Meanwhile, the Ghost is seeing the staff leaving the lab and decides to continue elsewhere and is approached by Sajani. She recognizes that somebody paid him and offers to show him the best way to destroy the prison project beyond repair if he lets the other projects alone and doesn't hurt any one.
The Ghost admits she is a good negotiator and that she will get far in the business world, but he can't have that since he doesn't sabotage corporations for the money, he hates them and wants them dead. Peter changes to Spider-Man and hears a scream, he gets to the Ghost just as he phases his arm through Sajani's chest.
