Handloom clothes – the reason behind all those enigmatic radiant smiles!
“I am not talking with you!”
“Why?”
“Just like that!”
“I was thinking of you today!”
“Why?”
“No reason at all!”
These are the kind of messages that my cousin and I exchange over Whatsapp whenever we feel like it.
Why should there ever be a reason for anything and everything in life – is my only question. I just feel happy today. I should re frame it and say – I decided to make myself happy today.
Why?
No reason again.
There is no need for us to localize (Yeah – I just coined that word now – for absolutely no reason at all!), rationalize and analyse everything and anything that we feel. I personally feel women have a higher emotional quotient compared to men.
Why – yesterday – a lovely woman my age wearing a flowing anarkali handloom cotton kurta and with her hair framing her makeup less fresh face simply smiled widely at me when we crossed each other on the road.
I still feel nice and good and warm about this wonderful moment that we shared.
‘Eclectic’ is another word that I love – for no reason at all.
It sounds nice and the meaning is beautiful. It means a beautiful collection that is put together from assorted styles and concepts.
A woman’s wardrobe is eclectic. She carefully creates her wardrobe with clothes that she loves seeing, touching and feeling every time she opens her cupboard. Her wardrobe reflects the essence of her personality.
That lovely mauve Benarasi saree, that block printed handloom sarees, that lovely rustic patchwork bag with real shells on it, those chunky bangles, that pattachitra saree, that piece of tribal jewellery, that oh so exquisitely embroidered tussar silk saree, that cute applique work purse etc. all tucked away neatly in their respective places in the cupboard.
A woman may lay out her Pattachitra saree for a candle light dinner with her husband. And even as she caresses this lovely saree - a host of memories will flood her.
I bought it when I went to Odisha with my husband from that small shop in the corner of a busy dusty street. It was a quaint shop - almost nondescript. But we were drawn to it because a dignified old man wearing a beaded turban was hanging up other such wondrous sarees with reverence.
This old man scrutinized us with his piercing eyes. He was selling a part of his soul – his handiwork. It had taken him 8 days to create that saree. This was the price. No haggling here. Take it or leave it he said brusquely.
Why was he so abrupt? We wondered. No reason at all – was a perfectly acceptable answer.
A young man from classystreet.com is coming over to buy my handiwork now. I opened this shop for him. He is going to sell our handiwork on his computer. He brought his small computer here and showed it to me.
He smiled suddenly (no reason at all?). He takes photos of our sarees and shows them to me on his computer. He taught me to pronounce the words – classystreet.com.
It took me two days to learn that name. But that man from classystreet.com is a good businessman. He appreciates skill and labour and passion and honesty and quality. These are the things that we value too. This skill we have learned from our ancestors. My children and grandchildren are learning it from me. My granddaughter made that lovely applique work purse that you see over there.
So buy what you want quickly without wasting my time. No haggling or bargaining or discounts okay – he was back to his brusque self again.
I made a mental note of the website. It looked like a good ecommerce portal where the thrust was on exclusive quality work with fair pricing. Classsystreet.com – cool name.
We bought a whole lot of assorted stuff from that cute old man’s quaint little shop. He even allowed us to take some pictures with him wearing that superb beaded turban.
A trip down memory lane – every time we touch a piece of our eclectic collection in our wardrobe – the lovely memories are bound to resurface.
Nothing can ever really beat the experience of a real life shopping expedition. We can shop to our heart’s content when we take those rare breaks to enjoy a holiday. But given the hectic pace of our modern lives – we simply cannot afford to put off all our shopping needs to a vague distant date that may never dawn.
Classystreet.com extends that help to us. Classystreet.com cannot be summarily dismissed as just another –ecommerce portal out to make a quick buck at our expense.
Classystreet.com projects and portrays the art and the craft and the skill and the toil of these tribal rural people who simply will never ever compromise on the quality of their work.
Not a single thread will be out of place in their handiwork. These craftsmen are so keen about maintaining the quality of their skill and the intricacy of their designs – that believe us when we say this – it requires a huge huge dose of patience to do so.
Such craftsmen don’t simply sell their handiwork to any Tom, Dick and Harry. Like that cute old dignified man in that quaint old shop – they can gauge your personality with their piercing eyes that sear through your soul.
They recognize the inherent set of ethics in their buyers and it took classystreet.com two interactions to break the ice with these rural skilled tribesmen.
Small wonder then, that we urbanites will rarely find such exquisite pieces of jewellery and hand loom clothes elsewhere in any real or virtual market.
And mind you – the women working behind those looms are as sassy and trendy as us urbanites. Their designs and colour combinations convey the message to all of us who eagerly buy their exquisite exclusive stuff on portals like classystreet.com.
The applique work purse beckons us from our wardrobe.
That tussar silk saree tugs at our heartstrings today.
Tomorrow it will be that Kancheevaram saree.
And on a moody Monday – a lovely handloom Kurta will lift our spirits.
And we urbanites naively think – we are selecting our clothes according to our moods and whims and fancies!
Why do we feel happy when we wear that handloom kurta?
Because some tribal woman was singing her folk song while weaving that material for us.
Her baby was sleeping peacefully by her side as she gently worked on the pedals to work that well-oiled loom of hers along with her husband whom she loved with her whole heart.
Why did that lady wearing that handloom anarkali kurta smile at me out of the blue yesterday?
Was it really for no reason at all?
Or is it because we urbanites could not decipher the reason?
Was it because some lovely dark handsome woman was happy that her life was finally turning around thanks to ecommerce portals like classystreet.com?
Was the lady who smiled at me on the street yesterday just reflecting the smile of her rural sister? Was that rural woman happy that this urban lady had bought the kurta she made via classystreet.com?
Was the smile being passed on through classystreet.com?
I don’t truly think classystreet.com is simply selling great quality handloom clothes. I think classystreet.com is creating a channel of positive vibes and vibrations between the rural and urban people.
That is why perhaps women wearing the clothes that classystreet.com sells seem to be smiling for no reason at all. For people like my cousin who always seem to need a reason for anything that we women do – that statement above is sure to bring a smile on his face too.

AN ORGANIC LIFESTYLE IS AGELESS, TIMELESS AND IMMORTAL!
We don’t really need a dictionary to understand the meaning of the word ‘organic’ or ‘fashion’. Organic food, organic clothing and an organic lifestyle is the latest fashion these days. If these concepts are the latest fashion today – we at classystreet.com would very well say that our grandmothers and our great grandmothers and our mothers were extremely fashionable women!
Fresh piping hot food cooked from farm fresh locally sourced vegetables and grains was always served with a radiant smile and a dollop of home-made ghee. Delicacies, sweets and fried food marked all festive occasions. The food was always served on eco-friendly banana leaves or the leaves of the almond tree that were patched up and kept in place with tiny bamboo sticks. We ate with our fingers and our palms had a fragrant heady aroma all through the day. We worked hard, ate well and slept like logs.
Let us simply conjure the image of our grandmother in our minds and hearts. She wore clothes that suited the weather conditions of her region. A cotton saree was breathable. The drape of the saree was not only elegant and practical, but also a great source of comfort.
Women of that era knew their minds and tuned in to their hearts. They had a practical no nonsense approach. They wore clothes that suited them. They wore clothes that the people around that area wove with passion. Highly specialized work yet simple and elegant to look at, such clothes always had a classic touch of their local culture and traditions embedded through the strands of each saree. Soft to touch, cool to wear, easy to maintain and great to look at, women of that era looked stunning everyday despite wearing the most ordinary looking clothes regularly.
These women celebrated their uniqueness with élan and pride. Well-oiled hair, neatly braided or worn in a practical unique bun, that huge red bindi made out of locally sourced vermillion powder, that long red line of sindoor that adorned the parting in their hair, those glass bangles or those chunky sturdy tribal off white bangles that tinkled softly on their graceful hands, those huge earrings made out of local gem stones, those bracelet like sturdy silver anklets, those mysterious mystic tattoos that symbolized something that we could not decipher with our limited knowledge, that lovely sheer simple choli which did not even have a single button on it, yet had a tiny secret pocket to carry a little cash without worrying about taking care of a purse……my grandmother and all our grandmothers were fashionable ladies indeed!
They were mentally, spiritually, culturally, emotionally and traditionally strong women who – please read this with great care and at a slow speed – simply did not need to ape or imitate the women of another tribe or region or state or country or continent.
I am me, I wear what I feel most comfortable and good in. Such grand old ladies wore their attitude along with their attire. Such grand old ladies doled out a grand old feast within 4 hours that could put a five star hotel’s 5 course gourmet dinner to shame within three minutes flat. The food that they created with the freshest of ingredients was finger licking yummy and we simply ate with our hands in the most traditional manner. Beats eating with a fancy knife and fork any day. Try it. And be humble enough and open enough to acknowledge that there is a whole lot of truth in what we are trying to convey. Perhaps organic clothing and organic food and anything organic is the latest fashion now.
We at classystreet.com beg to differ.
We at classystreet.com strongly feel that organic clothing and organic food and an organic lifestyle is a timeless ageless concept that simply does not conform to the norms of the fluctuating fashion trends.
We at classystreet.com believe that a woman always wears her attitude with her clothes.
We at classystreet.com have carefully put together a stunning collection of handmade clothes that any woman can pick and choose from and wear with great pride.
We at classystreet do not believe in using the jargon related to the fashion world. Perhaps organic clothing is the future of the fashion world.
But we at classystreet.com have always remain rooted and anchored in our culture. We project, portray, display and sell clothes, tribal jewellery and handicrafts that are woven and crafted by hand using the most local of products.
We at classystreet.com feel that the world of fashion took a long long while to realize the worth of indigenously sourced material and organic products.
Perhaps fashion designers around the world are creating a lot of hype around it by giving their collections labels like ‘eco-friendly’.
We at classystreet.com look quizzically at the flowing sweeping garments that lovely damsels with oodles of make-up wear and display at fashion shows.
We at classystreet.com always wonder if that simple tribal woman who crafted that material on her traditional loom got any kind of recognition for her skill.
We at classystreet.com also wonder if that simple tribal woman got a fair price for her skill and talent. We at classystreet.com believe in giving recognition to the nameless faceless tribeswomen who toil day and night to craft such ‘organic’ clothes.
We at classystreet also wonder if we women can get around to doing any kind of work while wearing the outfit that the model is displaying at the fashion show.
We at classystreet.com cannot help but wonder if we women will ever feel comfortable while wearing such clothes.
We at classystreet.com really wonder – should we not be defining the clothes that we wear?
We at classystreet.com are amused that we let the fashion trends of the world define us.
We at classystreet.com genuinely feel that a woman and her personality and her attitude and her spirit and her culture and her beliefs and her confidence defines her looks and her hairstyle and her clothes.
We at clasystreet.com think back and realize that our grandmothers and our mothers never owned a single pair of high heels or machine made goods – yet they stood tall and oozed panache as they went about doing the most humdrum of chores around the house.
They wove in their creativity, passion, zeal, traditions and culture as they sang their traditional folk songs while working on the hand looms.
A single saree took 3 – 7 days to craft. But they loved and enjoyed the process. The dyes were organically sourced from the local vegetables or from the sap of specific trees or from the gum of the bark of a particular tree.
Tye and dye, batik, pattachitra, sambalpuri, kancheevaram silk with a temple border, Patola, Bengal cotton…..they had them all and wore them with care and pride.
The red vermillion dot and that smear of sindoor along with the tribal jewellery that they carefully crafted in their spare time were their only accessories – but they beat all the divas and the models of the fashion world hollow.
We at classystreet.com salute the spirit of our senior women who recognized the worth and the value of organic clothes and organic food and an organic lifestyle and had the gumption to create a trend in fashion that is ageless, timeless and immortal.

Considering the changing trends of this generation, Tussar silk Sarees manufacturers have begun several transformations, but without affecting the religious and traditional look of this year old clothing line. The Saree manufacturers from Odisha are using the unique weaving technique that is only known to some people, which reflects typical religious patterns. If you want to wear something traditional and still want to look stylish then this saree is meant for you.

I have a new friend.
I decided that she was my friend.
On Thursday, when I first met her – I called her Prakriti.
Yesterday was a Sunday. I decided to name her Bhoomi.
I am very much a woman like her – given to my moods, whims and fancies. So sometimes I call her Prakriti…. at other times I call her Bhoomi.
Prakriti means Nature.
Bhoomi means Earth.
Mother Nature. Mother Earth.
Prakriti or Bhoomi if you prefer to call her that – touched the beautiful chord of silence within me. She smiled quietly and beautifully.
She was extraordinarily gifted.
This dark damsel called Prakriti – could not speak like ordinary folks like you and me.
I will not dishonour or disrespect her by calling her deaf and dumb.
She could understand every word of what I was saying and I could grasp the essence of all her gestures which perfectly conveyed all her thoughts and emotions.
She touched that beautiful chord within me again…..her very young son called Sharad (which by the way is the name of a season) was very protective about her. He kept talking in that strange human language that we all converse in – as his mother conversed through her gestures with me. He was carefully scanning my face and trying to scrutinize my expressions. When he was reassured that I respected his mother – my new friend Bhoomi – he decided that I was worth his mother’s attention.
Prakriti and I met for a total of 5 minutes flat.
I may never meet Bhoomi again.
Bhoomi does not even know how deeply she affected me.
Prakriti made me realize the value of the silent contribution of a mother in a child’s life.
End of real life experience.
Classystreet.com is our dear young Sharad.
Mother Nature and Mother Earth are just that…… Mother Nature and Mother Earth.
Silent quiet workers who work without any expectations from their children.
Mother Earth and Mother Nature are inherent givers…….they give and bless their children abundantly with all their bountiful beautiful life giving gifts.
Prakriti was very proud of her young child Sharad because he knew the value of his mother.
Mother Nature and Mother Earth are very proud of classystreet.com because they realize the value of natural wonders that Mother Nature blesses us with.
Classystreet.com respects and honours all those craftsmen, weavers, handicraftsmen who toil with zeal, passion and respect to craft all those organic and eco-friendly hand loom made sarees or tribal jewellery or gift items.
Classystreet.com is working ardently to showcase the work of these craftsmen on their ecommerce portal.
The beautiful, eloquent, simple, radiant designs on all the hand loom sarees that are displayed on the portal of classystreet.com spell class and ooze panache.
Some damsel called Prakriti, some handsome lad called Vasant, some dark expert craftsman called Sharad, some classically aged but strong and sturdy old woman called Bhoomi, some bright spirited gal called Garima, some eloquent lass called Sandhya or some moody but smart girl called Ritu are working away from dawn to dusk to create stunning natural wonders called hand loom sarees which we urbanites can wear with élan.
Like the young Sharad of my experience, classystreet.com repeatedly scrutinizes the minds and hearts of our readers and viewers.
If your heart is in the right place, it should unfailingly draw you to the skill and the talent of all those rural folks who are weaving those natural wonders called handloom sarees.
Ladies reading this article – silence is the only chord that classystreet.com hopes to touch within all of you.
A quiet revolution is the only promise that classystreet.com offers to all of you.
An ecommerce venture can work only if there are buyers for what we at classystreet.com are selling.
Revert back to your roots. Revisit your roots. Touch base with your culture, your traditions and your tribal brethren. Try to visualize their life.
Urbanites are truly blessed because they are born on the richer side of the material spectrum.
But ruralites are much more blessed than all the urbanites of the world put together.
Why?
Because they value the bounty that Mother Nature and Mother Earth blesses them with.
People like Sharad and Vasant and Ritu and Garima and Prakriti and Bhoomi use their intellect and their ingenuity and their passion and their skill and their talent to decipher the nuances and blessings of Mother Nature and Mother Earth.
So they will not mind sweating it out to weave thread out of cotton.
They will not mind toiling to dye the yarn with wondrous colours made of roots and vegetables and plant sap.
They will work laboriously to then set up the loom to create a design which symbolizes some aspect of culture and tradition.
They will then finally get about to slowly but steadily weaving a beautiful saree inch by slow inch.
Cool to wear. Soft to touch. Tough to withstand the vagaries of Indian weather.
Lovely to drape, pleasing to the eye and elegant to look at.
That may perhaps define all those wondrous handloom sarees that those tribal rural brethren of ours painstaking create for their urban counterparts.
Classystreet.com does the classic work of the mediator – the work that young Sharad did for me when I was speaking with his mother Bhoomi.
Classystreet.com respects the rural folks because they patiently and expertly transform all the gifts of Mother Nature into a wearable fashion statement making garment called a handloom saree.
Classystreet.com respects the urban folks too because it believes and knows that they truly respect the labour and the skills of their rural counterparts.
Classystreet.com simplifies their lives to a great extent by creating a platform where the urban folks can buy the handloom sarees directly from the rural folks themselves.
Classystreet.com personally visits all these skilled hand loom weavers.
Classystreet.com then displays them on their portal so that urban folks reading such articles can buy great stuff at their convenience. The profits are redirected to the weavers directly which eliminates all the middlemen.
The ripple effect being that Vasant and Ritu and Sharad and Garima are able to buy a better loom or source better quality raw material or invest in better designs or colours to craft newer and trendier designs for all of us.
Rural folks befriended Prakriti and Bhoomi centuries ago. They continue to respect and worship the myriad facets of Nature because they would be totally lost without her blessings.
We urban folks too would be totally lost without the blessings of Mother Nature and Earth. We are just too caught up in our own busy bubble called life that we often forget the worth of Mother Nature.
Befriend Prakriti. Befriend Bhoomi. Buy hand loom sarees. Buy hand made goods. Buy hand crafted gifts. Touch base with Mother Earth. Feel the protective spirit of Mother Nature when you drape that lovely hand loom saree over your shoulders.
Take the classystreet.com route to buy all those natural wonders. Mother Nature and Mother Earth are sure to be all smiles when they see that bridge between urbanites and ruralites being cemented with so much love and respect.
