What do you know about Pilates?
Did you know that a German invented it?
mod
Inventor of the Pilates method (1883-1967)
Denise Steger (Linz am Rhein)

In 1929, Pilates opened his body training studio (Universal Gym) at 939 8th Ave, The Van Dyck Building. On his business cards, he gave his date of birth as 1880. It is not known why he made himself three years older, presumably to promote how fit you can be even at almost 50 years of age. The text on the cards read: âA MAN IS AS OLD AS HIS SPINE IS FLEXIBLE â A WOMAN AS OLD AS SHE LOOKS IN THE MORNINGâ.
The âUniversal Gymâ in New York, run by Pilates.
Despite the world economic crisis, Pilates was able to make a great success of the studio, with athletes, business people and actors, including Catherine Hepburn (1929-1993) and Sir Lawrence Olivier (1907-1989), but it was mainly dancers who were enthusiastic about his training method. Among them were the pioneer of modern dance, Martha Graham (1894-1991), who founded the Martha Graham School of Dancing in Manhattan in 1926, and many stars of the New York City Ballet. During his 38-year career as studio manager, his client list included over 2,000 students. In the 1940s, a Canadian magazine classified the Pilates studio as âa high-class exercise salonâ due to the high fee of $10 per session. In addition to Clara, his niece Mary Pilates and Clara's niece Irene Zeuner-Zelonka assisted him.
In 1934, Pilates published his writing âYour Healthâ and in 1945 âReturn to life through Contrologyâ (Return to life through âContrologyâ), which describes the philosophy and principles of his method. They are based on the pursuit of whole-body health, in which body, mind and soul are in balance, which can be achieved through physical exercise, proper nutrition, hygiene, balanced sleep, plenty of outdoor exercise and a balance of work, leisure and relaxation. Through the exercises he developed, âContrologyâ, mental strength and mental well-being are also developed. The special form of Pilates breathing, consciously performed during the exercises, allows the body to function optimally. As an âinner showerâ, it is said to cleanse the body and ultimately lead to the rejuvenation and strengthening of the entire person.

A Pilates class at Jacob's Pillow University of the Dance, where Joseph Pilates taught between 1941 and 1951.
The equipment developed and patented by Pilates himself â there were over 20 of them â not only added an additional dimension of body strengthening and correction of posture to the so-called âmat trainingâ, which consists of a series of 34 floor exercises, but was also used in rehabilitation. Pilates created a special exercise programme for injured people, such as dancers, and worked with these clients in a separate room. The success must have been considerable, because the orthopaedic surgeon Dr Henry Jordan adopted the Pilates training concept in his therapy, as did Dr James Garrick, founder of the first clinic for dance medicine.
Pilates held numerous lectures and courses for both doctors and students at the Chiropractic Academy, taught on US military bases and founded the health group called âReturn to Lifeâ. He documented his work extensively with photographs and film. 1939-1951, Pilates regularly taught at the summer camp for dancers âJacob's Pillowâ, Berkshire Mountains, where the pioneers of contemporary dance, such as Ted Shawn, and many students met. Joe and Clara owned a house there.

Pilates died of emphysema, which had apparently been bothering him for some time, at the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York on 9 October 1967, shortly before his 84th birthday. His urn and, later, Clara Zeuner's urn were buried in the Ferncliff Mausoleum in Hartsdale, New York.
Clara Zeuner continued to run the studio until 1972. After her death in 1976, it was taken over by the classical dancer and Pilates student Romana Kryzanowska (1923-2013) in 1977.
In the meantime, his students had spread the Pilates method worldwide, which in its further development split into different styles. Even today, many stars who are looking for fitness and figure-improving methods see Pilates as the ideal training and contribute to the popularity of his method. But the Pilates method has also been incorporated into modern sports science, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, where it has been supplemented and refined according to the latest findings.

Discover the Power of a Pilates Gym: Strengthen, Stretch, and Shine
When you step into a Pilates gym, you're not just entering a space filled with machines and matsâyouâre walking into a transformative wellness journey. Whether you're a complete beginner or a fitness enthusiast looking for a smarter way to train, Pilates offers a refreshing approach to building strength, improving flexibility, and enhancing overall wellbeing.
Letâs dive into what makes a Pilates gym so unique and why it might just be the best thing you do for your body and mind.
What is a Pilates Gym?
A Pilates gym is a dedicated studio or fitness center that focuses on teaching Pilates-based exercises using mats, reformers, and other specialized equipment. Unlike traditional gyms packed with weights and cardio machines, Pilates gyms provide a quieter, more focused environment centered around mindful movement.
The heart of Pilates is control, precision, and flowâwith each movement carefully designed to improve core strength, balance, posture, and coordination. Whether you're doing classical mat Pilates or using machines like the Reformer, Tower, or Chair, each session challenges your body in a safe and balanced way.
Benefits of Training at a Pilates Gym
Core Strength Like Never Before One of the key focuses of Pilates is the core, which includes not just your abs, but your lower back, hips, and pelvic floor. A strong core supports better posture, stability, and movement in daily life.
Low-Impact, High-Effect Pilates is gentle on the joints while still delivering powerful results. This makes it ideal for people recovering from injuries, dealing with chronic pain, or simply looking for a safe, sustainable way to stay fit.
Improved Flexibility and Mobility Unlike static stretching, Pilates incorporates dynamic lengthening movements, which help you gain real-world flexibility and improved joint mobility. Over time, youâll notice better range of motion and fewer aches and pains.
Better Posture and Alignment Modern life often puts our posture to the testâespecially if you sit at a desk all day. Pilates helps realign your body by strengthening the deep stabilising muscles and teaching you how to move efficiently.
Total Body Awareness Each session brings a stronger connection between your mind and body. You'll become more aware of how you move, breathe, and hold yourself, both in the gym and beyond.
What to Expect in a Pilates Gym Session
Pilates sessions can be done in a group or one-on-one setting. Most gyms offer beginner-friendly classes that teach the basic principlesâbreath, concentration, control, centering, precision, and flow.
There are two main types of sessions:
Mat Pilates:Â Done on a thick mat using your own body weight and small props like balls, rings, or resistance bands.
Reformer Pilates:Â Uses a sliding platform with springs and pulleys to provide resistance and support for more dynamic and challenging movements.
A typical class lasts 45 to 60 minutes and flows smoothly from one exercise to the next. Youâll leave feeling both energised and relaxed, with a sense of calm that few other workouts provide.
Who Can Benefit from a Pilates Gym?
Everyone! Pilates is incredibly adaptable. Whether youâre an athlete wanting to enhance performance, a senior looking to improve mobility, a new mom rebuilding strength, or someone managing back painâPilates can meet you where you are.
Many Pilates gyms also cater to:
Pregnant and postnatal clients
People with injuries or chronic conditions
Dancers and athletes
Older adults seeking functional fitness
Why Choose a Pilates Gym Over a Regular Gym?
While traditional gyms focus on brute strength and cardio output, Pilates gyms offer a more refined and intelligent approach to movement. Itâs not just about how hard you work, but how well you move.
In a Pilates gym, the environment is usually smaller, more personalised, and calming. Youâll often find certified instructors with deep knowledge of anatomy and rehabilitation, offering guidance that goes beyond basic exercise.
Itâs also a great space for community. Many people find Pilates gyms to be welcoming, encouraging spaces where they can grow at their own pace.
Tips for Starting at a Pilates Gym
Book a Taster Session â Many Pilates gyms offer an introductory class or private session to help you learn the ropes.
Wear Comfortable Clothing â Think stretchy, form-fitting clothes so your instructor can observe your alignment and form.
Go Barefoot or Wear Grip Socks â Most classes are done without shoes.
Ask Questions â Pilates is about learning proper form. Donât hesitate to speak up!
Be Patient and Consistent â Pilates is a practice. The more you do it, the more you'll feel the benefits.
Final Thoughts
A Pilates gym is more than just a workout spaceâitâs a sanctuary where you can reconnect with your body, strengthen from the inside out, and find joy in movement. Whether you're chasing a healthier lifestyle, recovering from injury, or simply looking to feel better in your own skin, Pilates offers a path to long-term wellness.

The Unique Benefits of Post Natal Pilates in West Sussex

Post natal Pilates West Sussex offers a safe and effective way for new mothers to rebuild their core, strengthen the pelvic floor, and ease tension in the shoulders and backâcommon concerns after pregnancy and delivery.
Instructors who specialise in post natal Pilates West Sussex are trained to understand the physical changes that occur during pregnancy and after birth. They focus on slow, controlled movements that support healing without placing unnecessary strain on the body. This mindful approach not only helps restore muscle tone but also improves mental clarity and relaxation, which can be incredibly beneficial during the often stressful postpartum period.
Most post natal classes also allow time for community building, enabling new mums to connect with others going through a similar stage in life. The supportive atmosphere found in post natal Pilates West Sussex classes can be a valuable source of encouragement, reducing feelings of isolation and helping women feel empowered in their post-birth recovery journey.
Why Pilates Is a Long-Term Investment in Health

Youâve decided you want to take up Pilates, so you start looking for a studio. As you skim through ClassPass, you realize there's Pilates and there's Lagree Pilates. What the heck is the difference, and which one should you choose? âThe biggest and most obvious difference, in my opinion, exists between the Pilates reformer and the Megaformer used in Lagree. Other than both having springs and a carriage, they are almost entirely different in every other way,â says Kevyn Zeller, a certified Pilates instructor. Both the Lagree Method and classical Pilates are great forms of exercise, but they're not interchangeable. They can, however, be complementary to each other. Experts In This Article Kevyn Zeller, a certified Pilates instructor Sebastien Lagree, founder of Lagree Fitness and creator of the Megaformer and Microformer workout Ahead, Zeller and Sebastien Lagree, the inventor, CEO, and founder of Lagree Fitness, share even more about the differences between the two workouts and offer tips on how to figure out which is the right choice for you. What is classical Pilates? Pilates is a form of exercise that uses a spring loaded carriage (called a reformer) to create resistance to train your muscles. It was invented by Joseph Pilates in 1926, but didn't gain popularity until the '90s. âThe Pilates Method of Body Conditioning develops the body uniformly, corrects posture, restores vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit,â Pilates famously said. âPilates, taught traditionally, is a system of exercises designed by Joseph Pilates that help to train and retrain neural pathways that exist between the brain and every muscle in the human body, which requires a significant amount of meditative concentration,â Zeller says. Zeller explains that classical Pilates is often taught one-on-one (though you can find classes) with absolute attention to detail, precision, and control. It's also performed mostly lying on your back and focuses on the push and pull of the springs to move the carriage. The springs can be adjusted to work with your fitness level. What are the benefits of classical Pilates? Pilates is a great low-impact workout. Because of that, many different groups of people can do it, including those with prior injuries. âThe individualized experience of Pilates is accessible to all populations and there isnât anyone Iâd ever tell to stay away from it,â Zeller says. âThe equipment is designed to meet clients exactly where they are and support them as they heal injuries and develop uniform strength and increased mobility.â There are many benefits to classical Pilates, according to Zeller: Improved balance Decreased pain Increased muscle tone Enhanced joint mobility Better posture Improved core strength Increased respiratory function What are the drawbacks of classical Pilates? While Zeller says there are no cons to classical Pilates, she does note that to reap the full benefits, itâs important to have a solid foundation and understanding of the method. âIf someone jumps into a class before theyâve developed the skills necessary to support the work with muscular integrity, there is potential for injury to occur,â she says. Her recommendation is to start with a class for beginners and work your way up. âOnce you have a strong classical Pilates practice that you have honed and owned, it will forever be the gift that keeps on giving,â she says. If you're looking for something with higher intensity where you can really feel the burn, you may want to look into Lagree. For something that's less intense, classical Pilates may be the move. What is the Lagree Method? The Lagree Method was invented by Sebastien Lagree in 2006. Lagree is a French man who came to the United States in the '90s looking to become an actor. After being asked if he was a personal trainer at most of his auditions, he decided to put his own bodybuilding skills to work and start training people. He began training his clients
out of a Pilates studio (which, at the time, was gaining popularity in Hollywood) and was asked by the owner to teach Pilates as well. He had never heard of Pilates, but he decided to learn more about the modality. Though Lagree liked the classical method, with his background and knowledge in bodybuilding, he saw an opportunity to add more strength training to it. âIf you look at the foundations of Pilates, there was nothing about training techniques or eccentric overload [a resistance training technique that focuses on the lowering phase of an exercise]. None of that stuff existed. It was not part of the vocabulary,â Lagree says. So he implemented circuit training and a little bit of cardio to the resistance training coming from the weight of the Pilates equipment. âWhen I saw the reformer, using the spring was not a foreign concept [to me]. I saw the spring as a hybrid between a weight and a rubber band,â Lagree says. Thus, the Lagree Methodâand the Megaformerâwas born. What are the benefits of Lagree? Lagree challenges your muscles and helps to build and sculpt them. It improves endurance, cardiovascular fitness, body composition, flexibility, and strength. The tempo is reduced, and this creates the time under tension which forces you to integrate all of your muscles. âYou build total strength, and itâs a more holistic way of training,â Lagree says. Part of what helps with muscle building is the carriage called the Megaformer. The Megaformer has springs and platforms on both the front and back (which can adjust to your fitness level) and handrails, which allow you to use the machine in ways that you cannot use a reformer. âThe Megaformer is more equipped to work against the spring, whereas the reformer has nothing to work against the spring because it was never the intent,â Lagree says. What are the drawbacks of Lagree? If you're someone with a lot of injuries, you may want to steer clear of Lagree until you're fully healed and back at your peak fitness level. âYou need a basic amount of fitness when you do this workout. Itâs not for everyone,â Lagree says. He also suggests not doing Lagree with sore, tired muscles because you need all the strength you have to balance, hold your movement, and be precise with those movements. Because Lagree is a combination of so many elements, you want to be as fresh as possible when doing it. Lagree vs. Pilates: Which one is right for you? Before you choose which workout is right for you, itâs important to note that many Pilates studios today teach a sort of mix of classical Pilates and Legree. âNow, you have Pilates 2.0, you have high-intensity Pilates, modern Pilates, progressive Pilates. These are different ways of saying the workout is Lagree-based,â Lagree says. If a studio doesn't have the Lagree name included in the title, it's not an actual Lagree class. If you're looking for something with higher intensity where you can really feel the burn, you may want to look into Lagree. For something that's less intense, classical Pilates may be the move. Lagree and classical Pilates are actually a great compliment to each other, and can both be a part of your weekly routine, according to Lagree. âThe best workout is a combination of things,â he says. So if youâre not sure which one to do, do bothâthere's room for everything!

Exploring the World of Pilates: Exercises, Local Pilates Options, and Classes Near You
Introduction
Pilates is a highly effective and popular exercise method that focuses on strengthening the core muscles, improving flexibility, and enhancing overall body strength. In this blog, we will explore the key aspects of Pilates, including its history, benefits, and various exercises. Additionally, we will discuss how to find Pilates studios and classes near you.
What is Pilates?
Pilates, developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, is a system of exercises designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, posture, and mental awareness. It emphasizes the importance of a strong core, which is often referred to as the "powerhouse" in Pilates terminology. The exercises in Pilates are performed with controlled movements and a specific focus on breath control and body alignment.
Benefits of Pilates
Core Strength: Pilates is renowned for its ability to strengthen the core muscles. By targeting the muscles in the abdomen, lower back, and pelvis, it helps improve stability and balance.
Flexibility: Pilates incorporates stretching exercises that enhance flexibility, making it easier to perform daily activities and reduce the risk of injury.
Improved Posture: Pilates encourages proper alignment and awareness of body positioning, leading to improved posture and reduced strain on the spine.
Enhanced Body Awareness: Pilates promotes mindfulness of movement, helping individuals connect with their bodies and develop better proprioception.
Full-Body Workout: Pilates engages a wide range of muscle groups, providing a comprehensive workout that contributes to overall body strength.
Stress Reduction: The focus on controlled breathing in Pilates helps reduce stress and promotes relaxation.
Injury Rehabilitation: Many physical therapists incorporate Pilates into rehabilitation programs as it can aid in the recovery from injuries.
Pilates Exercises
Pilates offers a diverse range of exercises, each targeting specific muscle groups and aspects of physical fitness. Here are a few essential Pilates exercises:
The Hundred: This exercise engages the core muscles and promotes cardiovascular fitness. It involves lying on your back, lifting your legs, and pulsing your arms up and down while breathing rhythmically.
The Plank: A classic core-strengthening exercise, the plank is performed by maintaining a push-up position with your arms extended and your body in a straight line.
Leg Circles: Leg circles work on hip mobility and leg strength. While lying on your back, you lift one leg and make circular motions, alternating between clockwise and counterclockwise.
Rolling Like a Ball: This exercise challenges balance and core strength. Sitting on the floor, you tuck your knees to your chest and roll back and forth on your spine.
The Swan Dive: This exercise focuses on back extension and flexibility. You start by lying on your stomach and lifting your upper body while reaching your arms forward.
Single-Leg Stretch: This exercise works the abdominals and hip flexors. While lying on your back, you lift your head and shoulders and alternate between extending and bending one leg at a time.
Finding Pilates Near Me
If you're interested in trying Pilates or looking for Pilates classes near you, there are several ways to locate studios and instructors in your area:
Online Search: A simple online search with the keywords "Pilates near me" can provide you with a list of Pilates studios, instructors, and classes in your vicinity. Make sure to specify your location for more accurate results.
Fitness Apps: Many fitness apps and websites offer tools to find nearby Pilates classes and instructors. They often include reviews and ratings to help you choose the right option.
Social Media: Check out social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Many Pilates instructors and studios use these platforms to promote their services and share class schedules.
Ask for Recommendations: Seek recommendations from friends, family, or coworkers who may have experience with Pilates. Personal referrals can be valuable in finding a trusted instructor or studio.
Local Gym or Fitness Center: Many gyms and fitness centers offer Pilates classes as part of their group fitness programs. Inquire with your local gym about Pilates offerings.
Pilates Classes Near Me
Once you've identified Pilates classes near you, it's essential to consider a few factors before enrolling:
Instructor Qualifications: Ensure that the instructor is certified in Pilates and has relevant experience. A qualified instructor can provide safe and effective guidance.
Class Type: Pilates classes vary in intensity and focus. Some may emphasize mat-based exercises, while others incorporate specialized equipment like reformers or Cadillacs. Choose a class that aligns with your fitness goals and preferences.
Class Schedule: Check if the class schedule fits your availability. Consistency is key to reaping the benefits of Pilates.
Class Size: Smaller class sizes often allow for more personalized attention from the instructor, which can be beneficial, especially for beginners.
Studio Atmosphere: Visit the studio or class location to get a sense of the atmosphere and the equipment available. A comfortable and inviting environment can enhance your Pilates experience.
Conclusion
Pilates is a versatile and effective exercise method that offers numerous physical and mental benefits. Whether you're looking to strengthen your core, improve flexibility, or simply enhance your overall fitness, Pilates can be a valuable addition to your workout routine. By using the keywords "Pilates near me" and "Pilates classes near me," you can easily locate instructors and studios in your area, making it convenient to start your Pilates journey. So, don't hesitate to explore this fantastic exercise system and experience the positive changes it can bring to your life.
