Cartoon depictions of the homeless increasingly reflect the hostility of today’s political leaders toward people on the streets. We’ve gone from images of charming hobos with bindles to zombies taking over cities. If you consume any news at all, you’ve probably noticed that the United States is pathologically cruel to its homeless citizens. This May, the brutal killing of Jordan Neely—who was strangled to death, at the age of 30, simply because he was unhoused and shouting on the Manhattan subway—captured the national spotlight, but it was just one of many such cases of unprovoked violence. In January, two cops reportedly kidnapped a homeless man in Hialeah, Florida, drove him to an “isolated and dark location,” and beat him unconscious. That same month, art dealer Shannon Collier Gwin faced battery charges after he sprayed a homeless woman with a hose outside his San Francisco gallery, barking “Move! Move!” at her. (Predictably, Gwin got a lenient plea deal of just 35 hours of community service.) Elsewhere in the city, homeless San Franciscans have been attacked with chemical bear spray on at least eight occasions. Other assaults have been more impersonal but no less vicious. On July 14, the city of Houston abruptly closed its only public cooling center in the downtown area, potentially condemning anyone without shelter to suffer heatstroke in 90-degree weather. Among the property-owning class, the phenomenon of hostile architecture—sidewalks with spikes that stab anyone who tries to sleep, benches with iron bars, and the like—has become de rigueur. The widespread callousness and lack of compassion are both infuriating and hard to comprehend. How on Earth, we might ask, did things get this bad? [...]
Looking back at older cartoons, one of the things that stands out immediately is the absence of negative attitudes toward the homeless. In fact, during the Golden Age of animation, creators seemed to have had a real affinity for the poor and unhoused, often placing their most iconic characters in that role. There’s a wonderful 1948 Warner Bros. short called “Riff Raffy Daffy,” in which Daffy Duck is looking for a place to sleep—first on a park bench, then a trash can, and finally a furniture display in a shop window—and has to dodge the harassment of the police, as represented by Porky Pig in a little blue uniform. (Literally, the cop is a pig!) Or, in the 1950 cartoon “Homeless Hare,” Bugs Bunny’s rabbit hole is destroyed by a new construction project, leading him to unleash his usual slapstick mayhem against the developers until they put it back. In these cartoons, homelessness is something inflicted on people by outside forces—gentrification and the real estate business, in Bugs’ case—and something which can be successfully resisted. Even Disney cast a homeless dog as a romantic lead in 1955’s Lady and the Tramp, contrasting Lady’s sheltered naivety with Tramp’s superior knowledge of the world. The title invokes the memory of Charlie Chaplin’s “Tramp” films, which similarly brought dignity and humanity to the role of a homeless man. (Bugs Bunny, too, takes inspiration from Chaplin, and multiple Warner animators have drawn him as the Tramp.) In 1961, Hanna-Barbera’s profoundly underrated Top Cat followed the adventures of a gang of wisecracking Manhattan alley cats, who, like Daffy, are always outwitting a meddling policeman. At worst, classic cartoons may trivialize the suffering and danger associated with homelessness—there’s a certain recurring image of the carefree hobo carrying a bindle, which paints the whole subject in a romanticized light—but the homeless themselves are rarely disparaged or made the butt of the joke. Quite the opposite.
It took a few years, but cartoons caught up to the Reaganite turn. In episodes from the ’90s and early 2000s, there’s a palpable shift in the way homeless characters appear compared to earlier decades. The perspective is different: we’re now seeing them through the eyes of comfortably housed characters, rather than their own. Often they don’t even get proper names. [...] This trajectory leads us, perhaps inevitably, to SpongeBob SquarePants. [..] Squidward gets accused of stealing a dime by his comically greedy boss, Mr. Krabs, and quits his job in a fit of outrage. We then flash forward to see Squidward, now bedraggled and unshaven, living in a cardboard box on the street and begging for change. [...] Mercifully, the ever-cheerful SpongeBob gives Squidward a place to stay—but the moment he’s safely off the street, Squidward turns from a sympathetic victim of circumstance into a lazy, entitled freeloader, straight out of a Reagan speech. He makes no effort to find work and loafs around SpongeBob’s house for ages. [...] Eventually, an exasperated SpongeBob writes “GET A JOB” in his alphabet soup, before shoving him (bed and all) back to work at the Krusty Krab. [...] Worst of all, though, the episode suggests that homelessness can be solved on an individual basis if the people in question simply stop being lazy and “GET A JOB.” This is the biggest myth of all. In 2021, a statistical analysis by the University of Chicago found that 53 percent of people in homeless shelters, and 40.4 percent of unsheltered people, do have jobs. The problem is that their wages are too low, and rents are too high. According to statistics from the same year, it’s impossible for someone working a full-time, minimum-wage job to afford a single-bedroom apartment in 93 percent of U.S. counties, and there are no states in which someone can rent a two-bedroom space on the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. In other words, homelessness has little or nothing to do with personal responsibility, or lack thereof. It’s a consequence of large-scale economic decisions made by landlords and bosses. [...]

The crow and the spider - House of Phantomhive pt 1
Through the animus, you experience the life of your ancestor living in 19th century England. Your target is the family of Phantomhive and Trancy. However, their servants don't make your task as an assassin any easier. Nor does the red ribbon of fate that binds the demons to their soulmate.
The world was dominated by the legend of the red ribbon of fate, which bound soul mates together. But few knew it wasn't just a legend. It was real to demons and only these supernatural beings were able to see this ribbon.
The mansion you lived in was consumed by flames to its foundations. You had nowhere to go... That wasn't really true. You had nowhere to go, but it was a perfect opportunity to get closer to your goal.
So at the queen's request, you took shelter in Phantomhive House for a few days. The young earl provided you with a large room of your own, where you had every service. Moreover, he ordered his butler, Sebastian, to take proper care of you. After all, he couldn't disappoint Her Majesty, to whom your family was close.
You could say you were not like other nobles. You had a mind of your own and liked to do things your way. That was true even when it came to washing and dressing.
Sebastian filled your tub and wanted to help you wash and then dress. You refused to go around him naked and even though you knew that's what other noblewomen did, you refused.
At first, you tried politely, but eventually, you ran out of patience and threw him out the door. You were pretty self-sufficient and you weren't going to change that. Why waste a servant when you could do it yourself?
Sebastian was quite amused by your behaviour, as it was a challenge and such behaviour was unusual for ladies. Everyone wanted to be spoiled by him. He knew how to make a woman submit to him, only you were harder than the others. It was a challenge to tame you and subdue you.
You explored the estate, as you had the impression that there was much more going on here than met the eye.
Your unorthodox behaviour of treating the servants kindly and not like things made everyone take a liking to you. They were happy to serve their master, but you were a welcome change. As they tried to impress you, they made Sebastian's job harder. He had to drive them away from you and remind them of their work.
Ciel allowed you to use his vast library as you pleased. You felt most at home there, and the library became your base. You studied the maps, the letters and the movements of the Templars. From there, you sent encrypted letters and instructions to other assassins.
You loved to sit on the roof of the mansion, where you had a beautiful view of the whole property and the surrounding woods. Plus, you had peace away from everyone. From the staff, from the butler you had a problem with, and from everything else.
🟉-🟉-🟉-🟉-🟉
During your stay at Phantomhive House, you and the Earl received an invitation to the upcoming Trancy Family Ball. It was an excellent opportunity to find out more about this family, as they were on your list of suspects as well.
Ciel gave you a beautiful long dress with shoes and matching jewellery as a gift. After all, when your house burned down, so did your stuff.
You were blown away by the dress and went to try it on. This time you didn't even mind Sebastian coming with you, since he had to lace it up in the back. The shoes were gorgeous too, but you had an opinion about them. You picked them up and went to show them to the Count.
"If you want to kill me, do it the classic way. These shoes are a murder weapon," you said seriously, pointing to the high stiletto-like heels.
The Count was not amused by your reaction, though you noticed a small smile from the butler. Unfortunately, you had no choice. If you wanted to attend the ball, you had to go in those "murder weapons." At worst, you could use them as a real weapon.
You liked to wear heels but at a reasonable height. When you first tried on these shoes, you were afraid you'd break your foot.
All of which led to Sebastian giving you dance lessons at his master's request and seeing to it that you learned to walk in those shoes by then.
You liked those lessons with the butler. It was like he was someone else at that moment. He may have been strict and punished every misbehaviour, and he seemed to revel in punishment, but when you made progress he rewarded you accordingly.
You danced close, and even though you were wearing heels, he was still taller than you. Many times during the dance you were lost in thought and in his eyes, which were an unnatural red color. The soft lips when he looked at you lustfully.
🟉-🟉-🟉-🟉-🟉
One night you couldn't sleep and decided to get a glass of water. You didn't want to annoy the servants because of your vanity and maybe it would help you sleep.
You were walking down the hall when you found a small kitten crouched in the corner next to the commode.
You crouched down beside the kitten and took it in your arms. You planned to take him somewhere away, hide him from the Earl since you knew Ciel had allergies and didn't like them much.
You grabbed a glass of milk instead of water in the kitchen and headed out with the kitten. You thought everyone was asleep when you got a chill down your spine and felt like you were being watched.
You looked over your shoulder, but no one was there. When you turned back around, you jerked in shock as Sebastian stood a few steps in front of you. You couldn't read anything from his expression.
His gaze then focused on the kitten, wanting to take it from you. You hesitated to give it to him. You were worried he might hurt it. You knew how cruel and stern he could be on occasion.
You refused to give him the kitten and instead scratched the creature's head. You were about to go around Sebastian and keep going when he stopped you. He wanted you to follow him because he wanted to show you something.
You made it to his room where you could faintly hear meowing. You looked at him suspiciously. He just smiled at your reaction before he opened the door and you walked in.
You couldn't believe your eyes. His room was full of cats crawling around him, begging for attention. Seeing this, you knew you could trust him with a kitten. You sat down on his bed and immediately the cats started cuddling with you.
You were glad your ancestor didn't have a cat allergy like you do in modern times. You were content to cuddle with the cats. Sebastian sat down next to you and watched you contentedly.
You had no idea when, but as you were surrounded by cats, you slowly laid down and before you could return to your bedroom, you fell asleep.
From then on, Sebastian called you lost kitten or just kitten in private. You were as cute as the felines he took care of.

How smart are you? You’ve given some hints before but how many degrees do you have? What are you studying? What do you want to do in live professionally and passionately? What’s your purpose career wise?
Also hypothetically would you be open to being your wives employee if she had a really successful company?
I actually don't have any degrees! I'm a nerd and smart but also certainly have my flaws.
For context, I was an honors student all growing up. Always tested in the 99th percentile for state aptitude assessments. I got a 33 on my ACT, did well on a bunch of AP tests and went to a non-ivy-league but prestiguous state school in the top 25% of the incoming class and as a university scholar, in an accelerated chemistry PhD program, and lived in an honors community on campus.
I learned to speak some Chinese, became an instructor for a traditional Korean percussion group, led a bible study, tutored students in organic chemistry, and did excellent in my humanities courses writing on topics like a linguistic study of gender conception in viking-era icelandic society and designing an interventional plan to address youth homelessness in the community.
College was the best 2 years of my life, I adored everything about it but I also completely overloaded myself. Turns out you need more than raw brains for success. I was conflicted between prioritizing my studies vs my faith, and had unadressed adhd and anxiety i wasnt ever aware of and didnt know how to cope with. When my 19 credit hours were drowning me, I couldnt own up to the shame of overwhelm and failure, couldnt look my teachers in the eye and ultimately stopped showing up to class and dropped out.
I'm now back in school with a better understanding of myself, an absense of competing priorities and a lot of experience. Im pursuing working in Radiology doing either CT or MRI. A lot of my friends growing up are finishing their PhD theses and I love discussing them with them, but I myself don't have even an associate's to my name.
Career wise, I originally wanted to be a professor of either Chemistry or Materials Science. I debated majoring in Linguistics or teaching English as a second language but i don't speak anything fluent enough to really do that yet. I've since considered pursuing a career in comedy, as a science communicator and journalist or PIO, as a university student advisor, and taught myself to code to maybe pursue programming.
I love learning. Currently I'm putting the most effort into Chinese classical literature. I've done personal units on nutrition, skincare, fitness, urban planning, economics, and some software like adobe illustrator and game dev with Unity and Godot.
For my professional future, I think I'm for now planning on being a travelling technician in healthcare. It'd give me an opportunity to see lots of different places which is a goal of mine and shouldn't have too many commitments keeping me held in place. Maybe I'll finally get over my fear of casual hookups and become a traveling nurse by day and city-to-city clit servicer by night sampling all sorts of delicious lady bits. Idk. For now I'm just focused on what I'm doing in the moment.
In terms of passions I want time and independence to pursue learning as an autodidact. I'd love to maintain access to university libraries and attend lots of public lectures and symposiums if i could live near enough a big university. I want to read about the things that interest me and someday get over my social anxiety and travel to make friends all over the world with fellow nerds.
In terms of working for my wife of course that would be really sexy I'd love to be my partners doting but slutty assistant 💕 depending on the industry i guess. I think something like insurance or real estate is kind of predatory tbh and wouldnt want to be associated with it. But if I didn't have an issue with it I'd adore being my partners employee. Or even just a supportive house husband or trusted personal assistant ❤️❤️ a role i've always thought I have the potential to be quite good at
