Why is this book about 1880s London Jews so relatable to the 2020s American Roman Catholic experience?
In Amy Levy's Reuben Sachs, you've got:
The community that is at once fully part of the modern world while having an insular nature (and the amount of modern vs. insular varies based on the person and family)
The people who ignore their religion 99% of the year, but wouldn't even consider skipping services on the important holidays
The ultra-traditionalists who go so intense on holding to traditions that a lot of other members of their religion side-eye them
The kids who go to services only because their parents force them to, or who rebel and refuse to go because they don't see the point or don't believe in God
The new convert who is more zealous than, like, 90% of the people who were born into this religion
A family with its very specific blend of religious opinions and inside jokes that's fully aware that they're baffling to outsiders
This book was apparently meant to be a realistic portrait of Jewish life (in response to Daniel Deronda and its (according to Levy) highly unrealistic and over-idealized portrayal of Jews), and my goodness, did she succeed in capturing what it's like to live in a culturally religious community in a rapidly secularizing world.
#books#victober#reuben sachs#amy levy#i'm only about a third of the way through but the impression's already so strong i have to talk about it#i thought the anglican church drama was relatable but this cranks it up to 11#also i need to say that while i'm struggling through two books by people who are major overwriters#it is *such* a relief to read something by an under-writer#it's snappy it's quick it's witty it's concise#the oscar wilde vibe is still going strong#i have no clue how these family connections work#and her habit of underwriting is making it hard to differentiate this huge cast#but it's still fun to meet them all#also: love the deeply middle-class vibe#we've got your bankers and your businessmen#but one guy shows up and he's just...a dentist#so refreshing so real#also: i adore the way levy writes family relationships#maybe my favorite thing about her#all these people who are fully aware of each others' quirks#will constantly poke fun at each other but also love each other#in a way that's equal parts fondness and exasperation and good humor#there's something about her style that resonates so well with my interior personality/thought process#and maybe with my writing style/approach to stories#which is very weird because as people we're total opposites#but it feels like hanging out with a friend#anyway i prayed for her last night

Guys should I write a Dracula musical. Should I???
#BUT I NEED TO FINISH MY ROBIN HOOD ALBUM TOO#it’s going well!! I think!#but I’ve just listened to the Jekyll & Hyde musical soundtrack it was pretty good#a couple really great songs#so currently I’m kind of obsessed with like old gothic horror stories? something like that?#but like. retellings#because I am still sooo in love with The Glass Scientists#in love in love in love#and then I listened to the Dracula musical soundtrack#I reeeally did not like it#I only listened to the soundtrack though I didn’t watch it#but there was barely anything on Arthur and Jack and Quincey????#the three suitors??? hello????#where did they go :(#AND MINA ENDS UP WITH DRACULA???#EXCUSE YOU SHE WOULD NEVER#I love Jon and Mina so much why would you do this to them :(#anyway I want to write my own Dracula musical now#I can do that right? how hard can it be?#I’ve already written two episodes of a musical TV show for my creative writing class#and I’m actually quite proud of those#I also need to catch up on my Dracula Daily!! I’m a few days behind#also if I write a Dracula musical I will absolutely be imagining the songs with the voices of the Re: Dracula cast#dracula daily#re dracula#robin hood mechs au#<- tagging that so someone can tell me NOOO FINISH YOUR ROBIN HOOD MECHS ALBUM FIRST!! Films watched (2010s): MADE IN DAGENHAM (2010) dir. Nigel Cole; screenplay by William Ivory. Starring Sally Hawkins, Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson, Geraldine James, Rosamund Pike, Andrea Riseborough, Jaime Winstone, Daniel Mays & Richard Schiff.
"What do you think this strike's all been about? Oh yeah. Actually you're right. You don't go on the drink. You don't gamble, you join in with the kids, you don't knock us about. Oh, lucky me. For Christ's sake, Eddie, that's as it should be! You try and understand that. Rights, not privileges. It's that easy. It really bloody is."
#made in dagenham#gif#tbs old films watched#sally hawkins#miranda richardson#bob hoskins#rosamund pike#william ivory#nigel cole#jaime winstone#daniel mays#richard schiff#geraldine james#quotes#2010s#period drama#british cinema#my gifs#based on the rl story of the ford sewing machinists strike of 1968 that helped trigger the passing of the equal pay act#i watched this a while ago & loved it#it's marketed as a comedy but it's not. i'm sure it's even a drama-comedy as such. but it's good#gets the complexity of social issues on a human level; great cast some great bits in the script#and while all the women are fictionalised versions#it seems to have taken the interviews with the rl women as the starting point and used that really well#anyway it's a great little film about a little known bit of working class history#everyone's very good.#like i said tho - not by any means an all out comedy (even to including the suicide (of a minor male character) in the course of events)#but ultimately uplifting and good. another rec basically#<3#for anyone who's seen it. i apologise for lack of the iconic red dress.

I am obsessed with how narratively convenient Lark's divinatory abilities are. She's the only one of the protagonists who is both pragmatic and has a working sense of self-preservation, so having some internal impulse that is actually the guiding hand of the cosmos pushing her into doing the REALLY stupid shit is both necessary and really useful.
Like, I am the type of writer who kind of scoffs at the idea that characters are beyond the writer's control and will completely screw over your outline, because on one hand, a sensible outline will follow the characters' personalities and tendencies anyway. Obviously in an ensemble cast you will need to do some wrangling, but in theory your characters are responding to varying degrees of stimuli in order to maneuver them into the places you need them to be for things to all come together in the end.
But more importantly, "curse from god" is the funniest and easiest way to push any character to do things beyond the realm of reason when necessary, and frankly, what the fuck is the point of playing god if you don't embrace that?
#midst podcast#midst spoilers#cr meta#anyway at all times I am advocating for taking full responsibility for your characters and overall story#this is also why I laugh at those posts like 'um if you're not going to treat your characters right then you shouldn't get custody of them'#sorry babe there is no CPS in my head. I am the cruel custodian and these are my poor darwinian orphans.#that's a joke but really like. look. yeah sometimes you gotta fabricate scenarios to make characters do what you want#but like... you do that by going 'who is this character and what would it take to push them to x'???#and especially in an ensemble cast sometimes that thing is 'curse from god' or 'divine insight'#fun fact: I LOATHE that post about 'my writing teacher made a joke that the characters are driving and the writer is locked in the trunk'#absolutely fucking hate it.#because THE WHOLE POINT OF FORMALLY LEARNING WRITING IS LEARNING HOW TO BE INTENTIONAL.#it is perfectly possible to write successfully without ever having a formal teacher but IF YOU HAVE A FORMAL TEACHER. UH.#like yeah yeah 'workshopping' but like. okay go build your own workshop group don't pay somebody jfc#(cuz it's not like most creative writing teachers know how to teach you to workshop. let's be fucking real.)#if you wanna learn how to workshop take a script class for the love of god.#ANYWAY rant over but I'm correct. the highest purpose of a writer is to be a control freak and to play god.

- *yawns* I could use a nap.
- How can you even think about sleep at a time like this?!
- *shrugs* I dunno, dudes, but this serial killer business has me drained.
Day 6 - The Sacrifice/Fool
"We care about them, they're funny and relatable. Usually ridiculed by The Jock and The Bad Girl. As much as we care about them, they typically die a gruesome death, ultimately warning the others of just what kind of danger they're in."
from @windbrook's Slashed Challenge.
#i love him too and i reeeaaallly feel bad that probably dies a gruesome death#he's the dude that just kind of hangs around campus#no one knows what his major is and the classes they see him in don't add up to any degree they can think of#he sleeps through what classes he attends#and is very much the shaggy from scooby doo/stober stereotype#he's a pleasant dude to be around though so he has a lot of casual friends#most often he can be found loitering around the various buildings on campus#on this night in particular he was chilling outside the berkley building#most unfortunately#because he only went inside to use the bathroom before getting trapped with the rest of the cast#then serving as the comic relief of their group#i would totally write him intk another story though so he can live long enough to get a full plot just because i think he's neat#fredrick peterson#day 6#the sacrifice#the fool#windbrookslashed#sims 4#ts4#sims 4 screenshots#ts4 screenshots#tw bruises#tw injuries#tw death mention

the Starlight Express Alumni Podcast is fascinating because you have
-multiple stories of people accidentally falling into roles that suit them perfectly, in very different ways
-Reva Rice basically never got hurt and one of the only times she did was OFF SKATES when she fell down the stairs
-Dolan Jose REALLY wanting to cover the “girl components” and being SO excited to at least be Wrench
-the mental image of a 6’6 Vegas Showgirl looking guy as a couples therapist
-the perpetual challenge of casting Poppas lol this constantly comes up in different Stex interviews
#eric clausell seems like a really nice guy but it’s just REALLY funny imagining him in mundane settings#honestly i find the production history and stories behind stex more interesting than a lot of the actual canon#there is so much fascinating depth behind how the skating physics impact characters#makes me really want to get back to the rink and maybe look into classes so i can just understand that aspect of them better#stuff like “‘cars’ have to hold on VERY tight because some of the ‘engines’ will just blast off”#the poppas usually needed the most warnings/guidance for cars because some of them did unusual things#because he’s SO hard to cast they’d just work with what they could get skating ability wise a lot of the time#lon satton only braked on one side and needed to be pushed up hills/didn’t control himself well going down#it’s also funny how mykal is constantly haunting them because they’ll namedrop him constantly and assume you know who he is#but barely say anything about him and he never actually appears#i want to use that as a story element somewhere because it’s mysterious and amusing#just make mysterious comments about how great Joe Schmoe is and never elaborate assuming you know who he is already

I feel like Little Shop of Horrors borrows a lot from Black Culture but I can't find any good essays on it
(In my mind it's mainly the black girl trio and the fact that Audrey II sings in a style typically associated with black people)
Though I'm non-black so I feel like this isn't really my place to talk.
#I would love to see a production with an entirely black cast though. (Except for a few characters like the contract ones and the dentist)#because i feel like the story would hit so much harder if Seymour and Aurdey were black. Like. there's really a class thing going on#so. theres that.#https://patabook.com/news/2024/02/27/dreamgirls-and-little-shop-of-horrors-helped-to-cement-the-legacy-of-black-girl-group-of-the-60s/#https://brandeishoot.com/2015/12/04/little-shop-of-horrors-fails-to-reflect-traditional-black-roles/#essays i found.

xavier’s shouldn’t be a big school bc i hate it
#like. here's the thing. in my (limited) experience.#the school stuff when it gets too big#starts to feel wildly disconnected from all the other x-stuff#in a way that i dislike#and part of this#to me.#is that when the school stuff gets too big#you start bringing in adults as teachers who are not teachers#like there are x-characters who are capital T teachers#and there are stories to be written about other characters becoming teachers#but if the school gets too big and the cast of administration is forced to expand too much#then those characters#who are still appearing in other stories!#don't actually have a relationship to the school or students that matters or changes them#bc their entire other deal is concentrated elsewhere and they only appear as teachers bc you need SOMEONE to teach a class#except you don't! bc as much as 'xavier's is a school' for a long time that was a really small and concentrated thing#also i feel like. introducing waves and waves of students to be discarded each time somebody decides the x-men should be a school again#is annoying#lastly! i feel like there are interesting things about the place of the x-men w/in marvel's society#like the x-men have historically fought in some sense to conform to what is expected of them#in order to comfort wider society and assure them they are good#simultaneously!#the x-men (and the institute) are not really a part of that society#and i think making the school too big too normal too recognizable as a school unbalances that tension a bit#w.me

also fun fact. you can effectively punch holes in plastic glow in the dark stars using a push pin and a rock and just pressing it really hard into your carpet or something so it doesn’t damage anything once it penetrates the plastic. in case you ever needed to know that
#i hope all my actors come to the premiere because i do not think i will be finishing this shit by sunday when we stop filming#going to need to tell them i have surprise presents for them all and use that to make them come see my mid short film#i have to stop putting down my own film. it’s not going to be mid. it’s going to be good. perhaps not as good as some others in the class#but it will not be as bad as the annoying ‘men’s mental health story’ bs one group is doing#frankly i don’t give a shit about men’s mental health but whatever#actually it might not be bad as a film idk their skill levels. but i won’t care about it due to there being no women in there#actually another group is making a film with no women (except the firdged mom) but i think theirs will be good#they have a cast of two people it’s not insane that there’s no women so i’ll allow it#and also of course that guys script was very good and he was actually my first choice when we voted on who’s scripts to make#no i was not my first choice…. i was trying to be humble….#also i wouldn’t have had to be director on his film. i could have been the bitchy production manager…..#i also would have had to go on multiple hikes due to the locations they needed. so perhaps it’s a good thing my script got voted in too#and i know i complain but i do actually like my group they’re great people to work with#even if the Annoying one and i clash sometimes. i like to think of our dynamic as Divorced Coparents#which sounds more sexy than it is. it’s not sexy at all. there’s no sex going on metaphorical or otherwise#i just mean. we clash sometimes but we also have good rapport. it’s like a tense middle school friendship#and the other guy. he’s great. cringe at times but we love him#i wish i’d known him before this semester so we could have had more time to become friends this timing kinda sucks#anyway. i don’t remember how this post started.#ok bye

Tagged by @captawesomesauce to answer a few questions! :D Thank you!
Are you named after anyone?: My middle name, yes! It was my great-great (?) grandmother's maiden name.
Do you have kids?: Nope! One day I will, but not anytime soon.
Do you use sarcasm a lot?: Not really.
When was the last time you cried?: Yesterday morning! I had a very upsetting dream that woke me up with tears in my eyes.
What's the first thing you notice about people?: Usually their eyes or their hair! I've been trained to look at hair over the years from mom, lol.
Eye color?: Blue! :D
What sports have you/do you play?: I am not a sportsball person, lol! I liked volleyball, but I would only play with my friends. In that same vein, I did (and do) love swimming, but never competitively. We were also forced to play soccer in middle school, but I did not last long, lmao! Got all the air knocked out of me once and I was done.
Any special talent?: I can whistle two ways!
Where were you born?: In a maternity ward, then rushed to the ICU.
Scary movies or happy endings?: Scary movies with happy endings!
Do you have any pets?: Sure do! My little sweet one, Fluffy :D She turns 20 on October 14th! She's a Ragdoll!
How tall are you?: 5'2" gang rise up.
What are your hobbies?: Reading, sewing, singing, swimming, gardening, antiquing, crafting, cosplaying, learning (languages and otherwise), DnD and other ttrpgs, playing videogames and board games, baking/cooking, tarot and oracle reading, dream interpretation, and Liking Spooky Things.
Favorite subject in school?: English and Social Studies! I also liked the Sciences, but it was never my favorite subject until I hit Honors Physics, and that was just bc of my teacher. He was amazing, because he actually took time to go through things with me, and let my little friend group in class all work together when we were stuck. He was also one of the only teachers that, when I freaked out about it being 'Honors' physics (Me? Math!? No!) told me that I could handle it, and that he believed in me.
Dream job?: Best selling author.
No Pressure Tagging: @a-scorpii, @azazelsexile, @clichenuance, @kys-kaleidoscope, @monogramsalarm, @foreverlostinreality, @piratebay, @worfsrozhenko, @pigmentpoltergeist, @flannelsandfolklore, @layered-like-an-onion, and anyone else who'd like to!
#littleblondesoprano#all my homies love Mr. Cawthorn#I took every science that I could with him bc he was that good#he used to always tell us stories about how he was descended from the Witch Trials Cawthorne#but someone along the line dropped the 'e' to try and cover up that connection#he used to play Straight No Chaser at Christmas too; like have their live show playing when we came in for class#he also loved the musicals and was very supportive of all of us - checked in with the cast and crew that were in his classes to make sure#we were doing alright#he and Tacci are some of the kindest people I've ever had the fortune of meeting

honestly, in terms of harry potter games, i desperately want one that’s just… going around the school and learning magic, yknow?
like, the only one ive played a bit is hogwarts mystery (on mobile) but ive looked at the other options and they all focused on more on the story than the classes. which like, makes sense, if youre making a game you want it to be a game, but also i just want to do magic school and learn how everything works.
i am such a sucker for magic theory and every day life as a wizard in general, i know there’s stuff like hogwartsishere online that has versions of lessons but that’s not a game. its better than nothing but i am still dying of want to just guide a lil guy around a magic castle learning magic and holing up in a library.
i dont want plot i want school
#never thought id say i want school lmao#but like#i fidn the concept of magic as a whole so absolutely entrapping#as someone who loves programming and coding in general magic feels like it should work similarly#i absolutely love the idea of arithmancy and anchient runes as classes#because that is things that connect together -like a program- to do magic#we were robbed when harry didnt do runes and arithmancy#i have consumed so many fanfic centered around runes and arithmancy and i am going insane#i want to /learn/ magic#i want to see how it might have worked#i want to compare potions ingredients to see which one reacts with what to do what#i want to learn how to tell the age or abilities of magical creatures#i want to cast charms and transfigurations and learn shields and the patronus#i want the magic#not the story#just the magic#i want to use my dip pens to take notes and fill books of magic theory and classwork#i want to learn magic#i need to learn magic#mould shouts#harry potter#magic theory#harry potter game

You romanticize your classes by using colored pens and sticky notes, I romanticize my classes by somehow someway making everything and any assignment about my OCs. We are not the same.
#Ill. I am. ill#my professor asking for a simple spy media story of like around 2-3 pages#for me to deliver her a 15 page document in the making with cast. location. season 1 recap and season 1 development.#I am crazy. but I am free.#y’all wish it was a joke but this is literally how I make it through my classes. every time I am given any sort of free choice in any#assignment to do something even remotely creative or to my own free will#I somehow someway find a way to make it all about one of my fictional worlds and the voices#this is the moment I pause and consider my choices and honestly self care hope queen has fun reading me rotting for 15+ pages with a#character diagram and a detailed explanation on how Vico Ortiz makes for the perfect protagonist in my spy story#delusional. that’s what I am. delusional#anyways I’ll be back to consuming media soon guys once I am not drowning in work !!!! muak#random#oc

Some communities are funnier when theyre insanely toxic because of how inconsequential they are. Like r/neverbrokeabone they turn on ex members so quickly and shun them viciously and its always funny
#Listen to my problems#sorry i was daydreaming about kiryu limping around in a foot cast#with like crutches and everything. dont you think he would be cute ...#i think he would break a leg as a kid because he does urb ex and has jumped out of two story buildings before#i think that the girls in his class all coo over him like ohh noo 🥺🥺 and stuff his desk with letters and then he skips school halfway and#doesnt see any of them and nishikiyama has to bag up all the letters and pass them to him at the school gate

well i finished the women (1936) by clare boothe luce. i did not like that as much as i was expecting.
#you wanna talk about how ppl act like all literature written by women is inherently feminist... brother#tales from diana#she has a genuine disgust for her own characters EXCEPT for mary. but choosing to get a divorce is still the greatest sin of her life#i love when im consuming 20th century entertainment and all the sudden i realize it's anti-divorce propaganda#the first act was alright but by the time i realized how it was going to end i was severely disappointed#it's not that i can't stand literature where basically all the characters are bad people. but the moral of the story is also bad#also boothe's stage directions were awful in how she described characters and scenes and just further illustrated how much she hated#the company of other women and thought she was so superior to all of them in her class basically.#all anyone ever told me about this story was that it had an all-female cast and i think a lot of boothe's storytelling methods#were really interesting in innovative in how she pulled that off.#but trust me. it does not pass the bechdel test lol#women are a bunch of catty gossips with no good judgment. men are cheating dogs and you should forgive them for it#even when they gallivant around town with their mistresses and go home and mistreat you. is what i learned from this play#a shame bc as far as her skill for dialogue and scene-setting it's really admirable.#but the soul of the play is rotten to the core. im so very let-down by this

Shoutout to the one time in my musical theatre class when we were doing Shrek the musical for the upcoming recital and two of the girls in the class (15-16 girls, one guy in the class) thought that Goldilocks and the three bears was a separate fairy tale from another fairy tale about the three bears and was deeply insistent the bears in the ensemble were from that nonexistent fairy tale.
They were literally two of the three bears. They were literally the bears in the ensemble.
#shrek the musical#musical theatre stories#musical theatre#also they cast one of the most queer-looking girl in the class as the big bad wolf#and cast me as one of the three little pigs when my body image was at its worst#honestly I could fill a whole separate blog about my musical theatre experience
