Why is this book about 1880s London Jews so relatable to the 2020s American Roman Catholic experience?
In Amy Levy's Reuben Sachs, you've got:
The community that is at once fully part of the modern world while having an insular nature (and the amount of modern vs. insular varies based on the person and family)
The people who ignore their religion 99% of the year, but wouldn't even consider skipping services on the important holidays
The ultra-traditionalists who go so intense on holding to traditions that a lot of other members of their religion side-eye them
The kids who go to services only because their parents force them to, or who rebel and refuse to go because they don't see the point or don't believe in God
The new convert who is more zealous than, like, 90% of the people who were born into this religion
A family with its very specific blend of religious opinions and inside jokes that's fully aware that they're baffling to outsiders
This book was apparently meant to be a realistic portrait of Jewish life (in response to Daniel Deronda and its (according to Levy) highly unrealistic and over-idealized portrayal of Jews), and my goodness, did she succeed in capturing what it's like to live in a culturally religious community in a rapidly secularizing world.

Films watched (2010s): MADE IN DAGENHAM (2010) dir. Nigel Cole; screenplay by William Ivory. Starring Sally Hawkins, Bob Hoskins, Miranda Richardson, Geraldine James, Rosamund Pike, Andrea Riseborough, Jaime Winstone, Daniel Mays & Richard Schiff.
"What do you think this strike's all been about? Oh yeah. Actually you're right. You don't go on the drink. You don't gamble, you join in with the kids, you don't knock us about. Oh, lucky me. For Christ's sake, Eddie, that's as it should be! You try and understand that. Rights, not privileges. It's that easy. It really bloody is."

I am obsessed with how narratively convenient Lark's divinatory abilities are. She's the only one of the protagonists who is both pragmatic and has a working sense of self-preservation, so having some internal impulse that is actually the guiding hand of the cosmos pushing her into doing the REALLY stupid shit is both necessary and really useful.
Like, I am the type of writer who kind of scoffs at the idea that characters are beyond the writer's control and will completely screw over your outline, because on one hand, a sensible outline will follow the characters' personalities and tendencies anyway. Obviously in an ensemble cast you will need to do some wrangling, but in theory your characters are responding to varying degrees of stimuli in order to maneuver them into the places you need them to be for things to all come together in the end.
But more importantly, "curse from god" is the funniest and easiest way to push any character to do things beyond the realm of reason when necessary, and frankly, what the fuck is the point of playing god if you don't embrace that?

- *yawns* I could use a nap.
- How can you even think about sleep at a time like this?!
- *shrugs* I dunno, dudes, but this serial killer business has me drained.
Day 6 - The Sacrifice/Fool
"We care about them, they're funny and relatable. Usually ridiculed by The Jock and The Bad Girl. As much as we care about them, they typically die a gruesome death, ultimately warning the others of just what kind of danger they're in."

the Starlight Express Alumni Podcast is fascinating because you have
-multiple stories of people accidentally falling into roles that suit them perfectly, in very different ways
-Reva Rice basically never got hurt and one of the only times she did was OFF SKATES when she fell down the stairs
-Dolan Jose REALLY wanting to cover the “girl components” and being SO excited to at least be Wrench
-the mental image of a 6’6 Vegas Showgirl looking guy as a couples therapist
-the perpetual challenge of casting Poppas lol this constantly comes up in different Stex interviews

I feel like Little Shop of Horrors borrows a lot from Black Culture but I can't find any good essays on it
(In my mind it's mainly the black girl trio and the fact that Audrey II sings in a style typically associated with black people)
Though I'm non-black so I feel like this isn't really my place to talk.

xavier’s shouldn’t be a big school bc i hate it
#like. here's the thing. in my (limited) experience.#the school stuff when it gets too big#starts to feel wildly disconnected from all the other x-stuff#in a way that i dislike#and part of this#to me.#is that when the school stuff gets too big#you start bringing in adults as teachers who are not teachers#like there are x-characters who are capital T teachers#and there are stories to be written about other characters becoming teachers#but if the school gets too big and the cast of administration is forced to expand too much#then those characters#who are still appearing in other stories!#don't actually have a relationship to the school or students that matters or changes them#bc their entire other deal is concentrated elsewhere and they only appear as teachers bc you need SOMEONE to teach a class#except you don't! bc as much as 'xavier's is a school' for a long time that was a really small and concentrated thing#also i feel like. introducing waves and waves of students to be discarded each time somebody decides the x-men should be a school again#is annoying#lastly! i feel like there are interesting things about the place of the x-men w/in marvel's society#like the x-men have historically fought in some sense to conform to what is expected of them#in order to comfort wider society and assure them they are good#simultaneously!#the x-men (and the institute) are not really a part of that society#and i think making the school too big too normal too recognizable as a school unbalances that tension a bit#w.me

also fun fact. you can effectively punch holes in plastic glow in the dark stars using a push pin and a rock and just pressing it really hard into your carpet or something so it doesn’t damage anything once it penetrates the plastic. in case you ever needed to know that
#i hope all my actors come to the premiere because i do not think i will be finishing this shit by sunday when we stop filming#going to need to tell them i have surprise presents for them all and use that to make them come see my mid short film#i have to stop putting down my own film. it’s not going to be mid. it’s going to be good. perhaps not as good as some others in the class#but it will not be as bad as the annoying ‘men’s mental health story’ bs one group is doing#frankly i don’t give a shit about men’s mental health but whatever#actually it might not be bad as a film idk their skill levels. but i won’t care about it due to there being no women in there#actually another group is making a film with no women (except the firdged mom) but i think theirs will be good#they have a cast of two people it’s not insane that there’s no women so i’ll allow it#and also of course that guys script was very good and he was actually my first choice when we voted on who’s scripts to make#no i was not my first choice…. i was trying to be humble….#also i wouldn’t have had to be director on his film. i could have been the bitchy production manager…..#i also would have had to go on multiple hikes due to the locations they needed. so perhaps it’s a good thing my script got voted in too#and i know i complain but i do actually like my group they’re great people to work with#even if the Annoying one and i clash sometimes. i like to think of our dynamic as Divorced Coparents#which sounds more sexy than it is. it’s not sexy at all. there’s no sex going on metaphorical or otherwise#i just mean. we clash sometimes but we also have good rapport. it’s like a tense middle school friendship#and the other guy. he’s great. cringe at times but we love him#i wish i’d known him before this semester so we could have had more time to become friends this timing kinda sucks#anyway. i don’t remember how this post started.#ok bye

Tagged by @captawesomesauce to answer a few questions! :D Thank you!
Are you named after anyone?: My middle name, yes! It was my great-great (?) grandmother's maiden name.
Do you have kids?: Nope! One day I will, but not anytime soon.
Do you use sarcasm a lot?: Not really.
When was the last time you cried?: Yesterday morning! I had a very upsetting dream that woke me up with tears in my eyes.
What's the first thing you notice about people?: Usually their eyes or their hair! I've been trained to look at hair over the years from mom, lol.
Eye color?: Blue! :D
What sports have you/do you play?: I am not a sportsball person, lol! I liked volleyball, but I would only play with my friends. In that same vein, I did (and do) love swimming, but never competitively. We were also forced to play soccer in middle school, but I did not last long, lmao! Got all the air knocked out of me once and I was done.
Any special talent?: I can whistle two ways!
Where were you born?: In a maternity ward, then rushed to the ICU.
Scary movies or happy endings?: Scary movies with happy endings!
Do you have any pets?: Sure do! My little sweet one, Fluffy :D She turns 20 on October 14th! She's a Ragdoll!
Tumblr media
How tall are you?: 5'2" gang rise up.
What are your hobbies?: Reading, sewing, singing, swimming, gardening, antiquing, crafting, cosplaying, learning (languages and otherwise), DnD and other ttrpgs, playing videogames and board games, baking/cooking, tarot and oracle reading, dream interpretation, and Liking Spooky Things.
Favorite subject in school?: English and Social Studies! I also liked the Sciences, but it was never my favorite subject until I hit Honors Physics, and that was just bc of my teacher. He was amazing, because he actually took time to go through things with me, and let my little friend group in class all work together when we were stuck. He was also one of the only teachers that, when I freaked out about it being 'Honors' physics (Me? Math!? No!) told me that I could handle it, and that he believed in me.
Dream job?: Best selling author.
No Pressure Tagging: @a-scorpii, @azazelsexile, @clichenuance, @kys-kaleidoscope, @monogramsalarm, @foreverlostinreality, @piratebay, @worfsrozhenko, @pigmentpoltergeist, @flannelsandfolklore, @layered-like-an-onion, and anyone else who'd like to!

honestly, in terms of harry potter games, i desperately want one that’s just… going around the school and learning magic, yknow?
like, the only one ive played a bit is hogwarts mystery (on mobile) but ive looked at the other options and they all focused on more on the story than the classes. which like, makes sense, if youre making a game you want it to be a game, but also i just want to do magic school and learn how everything works.
i am such a sucker for magic theory and every day life as a wizard in general, i know there’s stuff like hogwartsishere online that has versions of lessons but that’s not a game. its better than nothing but i am still dying of want to just guide a lil guy around a magic castle learning magic and holing up in a library.
i dont want plot i want school

You romanticize your classes by using colored pens and sticky notes, I romanticize my classes by somehow someway making everything and any assignment about my OCs. We are not the same.

Shoutout to the one time in my musical theatre class when we were doing Shrek the musical for the upcoming recital and two of the girls in the class (15-16 girls, one guy in the class) thought that Goldilocks and the three bears was a separate fairy tale from another fairy tale about the three bears and was deeply insistent the bears in the ensemble were from that nonexistent fairy tale.
They were literally two of the three bears. They were literally the bears in the ensemble.
