Tamalpais High School 

Tamalpais High School has a total enrollment of 1,610 students in grades 9 through 12. In California, Tam High School is placed 152nd. Unlike other schools, Tamalpais High School does not have a student body that is primarily male or female. Instead, the ratio of male to female pupils is equal. 50.4% of the population are boys, and 49.6% are females.  

Your classes should feel like they have an equal number of male and female students because the student body is often similar. Additionally, 11% of students are from low-income homes, and 32% of pupils identify as ethnic minorities. There are five high schools in the Tamalpais Union High School District. The student-to-teacher ratio is below the 20:1 state norm for California. 

SAT Test Score Requirements 

The average SAT composite score is higher than the US average of 1500, at 1720 out of 2400. The SAT is taken by about 331 Tamalpais High students each year. Averaging SAT results place Tamalpais High School in the top 10% of all California high schools. 81 percent of Tamalpais High School students, to put it another way, achieved a score in the 75th percentile or better on their standardised examinations.   

The nation's top pupils are probably going to compete at the highest levels. High scorers' company is a good indicator because the SAT is an intelligence exam. You must be able to stay up with, if not outperform, your Tamalpais High School peers in order to get admitted to the most renowned institutions. 

ACT Test Score Requirements 

The ACT is less well-liked in California than the SAT. The students that do take the ACT are more motivated and academically prepared since there are fewer of them. Tamalpais High School's ACT results are harder to compare to those of other schools as a result.  

The average ACT composite score at Tam High School was 26, which was higher than the 20 average nationwide. About 144 of the 1281 total students take the ACT each year. With a high ACT score, you may expect a top-notch education and to be surrounded by other motivated students who take their studies seriously. 

In terms of ACT results, the Tamalpais High School District is in the top 25% of all California high schools. However, the majority of ACT test-takers at Tamalpais High School are in the 74th percentile overall.

The student must provide three proofs of residency for their primary residence. 

The most recent immunization records. 

The California Department of Education requires student vaccination records for the Covid-19 virus. Therefore, if your student has been immunized, Covid-19 vaccination proof is required.

Columbia University Irving Medical Center: A Systemic Response to Systemic Racism.

The death of George Floyd at the hands of police—combined with the disparities highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic—spurred a racial awakening across the United States in 2020. The flurry of activity that started then at VP&S has not abated. VP&S students, faculty, and staff have initiated more than a dozen efforts to chip away at the massive undertaking of dismantling the effects of systemic racism in medical education.

Maya Jalbout Hastie, MD, associate professor of anesthesiology, and her fellow faculty in anesthesiology developed virtual improvisation sessions—inspired by true events—to help department members handle racist microaggressions in the workplace. Devon Rupley, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics & gynecology, along with two medical students, Stephanie Granada'21 and Cibel Quinteros-Baumgart'22, conducted one of the first studies to understand the birthing experiences of Spanish speakers during the early days of the pandemic in New York City. And medical student Jeremiah Douchee joined the Columbia chapter of White Coats for Black Lives, an organization run by medical trainees that aims to end racism and systems of oppression in health care.

Despite these efforts by members of the VP&S community, racism remains a systemic problem and demands a systemic solution. So in October 2021—as VP&S welcomed its most diverse medical student class in history—Hastie, Rupley, Douchee, and a dozen other stakeholders joined forces to form the executive coalition of the school's Anti-Racist Transformation (ART) in Medical Education project, perhaps the most comprehensive effort yet to undo systems of racism and bias in education at VP&S.

"Gathering a group of individuals across the workplace spectrum has been instructive on what it means to be inclusive," says Monica L. Lypson, MD, vice dean for education. "Having students, staff, and faculty working in collaborative fashion to create an anti-racist educational environment is key to future success."

Creating an anti-racist strategy

ART in Medical Education is a framework developed by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai that brings a three-year, systemic approach to the effort, charging medical schools with creating a transformative, ongoing anti-racist strategy. (As opposed to being passively "not racist," the term "anti-racist" refers to taking an active approach in countering systems of racial prejudice.) By participating in the project's inaugural cohort of 11 schools in the United States and Canada, VP&S is building on the efforts of its anti-racism task force, which called for advances in curriculum, admissions, student support, and the learning environment.

The ART in Medical Education executive coalition at VP&S is led by Jean-Marie Alves-Bradford, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and inaugural director of the Department of Psychiatry's Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and Hetty Cunningham, MD, associate professor of pediatrics and director of equity and justice in curricular affairs at VP&S. The ART project continues the work they did together to develop workshops for medical students processing racial trauma.

"It does really help to be a part of this team effort," says Alves-Bradford. "We're all coming from different disciplines, but with some similar experiences in those disciplines. Working together toward change, regardless of our area of expertise or particular focus, is not just bonding, it's motivating and strengthening and reinforcing that commitment."

When the project officially launched in October 2021, Cunningham says, the VP&S executive coalition began mapping out the disparate anti-racism efforts already taking place at Columbia to build a roadmap for organizational change. "What are the priorities of the institution that are documented, that have been expressed, that have been accepted? How can we work with those? Who are the main allies in this work? Who needs to be included? The idea is to come together and create a cohesive movement."

Guided by those findings, the coalition narrowed its focus to three core areas: curriculum, faculty retention, and integrated care.

Addressing the learning environment

To address curriculum, the executive coalition developed anti-racist learning objectives using a framework drafted by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The objectives aim to help students and faculty understand the term "anti-racist," says Alves-Bradford, and to define and operationalize what it means to create an anti-racist learning environment and health care system. Some of the objectives focus broadly on systems and practices, she says, while others drill down into specifics, such as how the medical school approaches basic sciences.

"We think about how the objectives would evolve over time throughout the curriculum," says Alves-Bradford, "to get deeper and more complex as students go from preclinical to clinical."

The learning objectives include understanding how a physician's personal biases and lived experience can influence clinical decision-making—and their interactions with patients, patients' families, and other members of the care team—and learning how to mitigate the effects of those biases. Another key element involves studying how societal structures might have played a role in a patient's health care experience. For instance, a person might have an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease if they live in a neighborhood that lacks access to affordable, healthy food. "Bias can creep in in lots of different ways," Alves-Bradford says, "even when we think it's far removed from the actual individual patient."

It's important to include anti-racist learning objectives as part of the curriculum, Cunningham says, because it means those skills will be formally assessed. "If something isn't assessed, then it's not taken seriously," Cunningham says. "We want our students to be able to be active in the space of anti-racism. Not only will they have the knowledge, but they'll know how to advocate for changes in medicine. The faculty are in agreement that that's something we want our students to be able to do, so we have to shift the curriculum."

Work toward an anti-racist medical education system also has implications for recruitment and retention, Alves-Bradford says. As workers nationwide reconsider their professional aspirations and work-life balance in wake of the pandemic, she notes, now is the time to consider systemwide structures that would help VP&S recruit and promote the best faculty, staff, and students.

Segregated care

Finally, while the idea of segregated health care might seem like a relic of the past, Alves-Bradford says a patient's health insurance coverage often dictates whether that person is treated at a faculty practice or a public clinic. Different providers work in these separate settings, and the differences don't end there. Faculty practices and public clinics have disparate resources, she notes, from technology to staffing ratios and even the ambiance of the setting in which patients receive care.

The Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at VP&S hosted a symposium in May on segregated health care. The center's director, Lydia S. Dugdale, MD, the Dorothy L. and Daniel H. Silberberg Associate Professor of Medicine at VP&S, gave the opening remarks. After public health experts outlined the history and policy that shapes how people receive care, a panel of physicians discussed ongoing efforts to desegregate care. Panelists included Julia E. Iyasere, MD, assistant professor of medicine and executive director of the Dalio Center for Health Justice at NewYork-Presbyterian. Kamini Doobay, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine, closed the event by providing the attendees with ways to advocate for individual patients and for systemic changes.

The ART in Medical Education coalition at VP&S plans to use its platform to publicize the issue and educate the Columbia community about segregated care. "What are some of the pitfalls when things are structured in that way?" Alves-Bradford asks. "What is the context? How did those systems evolve to be that way? There were regulations that led it to be one way or another: How does that happen?"

The coalition has joined ongoing efforts, including White Coats for Black Lives and the NYC Coalition to Dismantle Racism in the Health System, to push for an end to this divided system. "We're advocating for not having those systems segregated," says Alves-Bradford, "to integrate and have people seen in similar settings, regardless of their insurance or payment."

Beyond their work on curriculum, faculty retention, and integrated care, the VP&S coalition is considering ways to support and recognize students involved in anti-racism work. Also on the horizon: involving more participants from the greater VP&S community and the city at large.

As the ART in Medical Education project enters its second year, the VP&S coalition and the rest of the inaugural cohort of schools are moving into the next phase of the project: implementing and sustaining change at their various institutions. While each of the 11 medical schools aims to embed change, learn from feedback, and course correct to develop transformative, ongoing anti-racism strategy, the cohort also plans to come together to learn from each other.

"The cohort allows us to partner with institutions around the country that are doing very exciting things," Cunningham says, "We're sharing our challenges and solutions. That allows us all to move forward more quickly and adopt best practices."

HMTQ The long wait …………

The road going up to Windsor Castle is called The Long Walk. Because of Covid, her Majesty the Queen , will no longer at this point be going to Buckingham Palace. Hence the reason for yesterday’s riddle clue that 250 BP staff are being made redundant. So she has spent all this time at Windsor Castle and is looking forward to going to Balmoral. As far as I’ve heard, that has not been cancelled. I’ve checked again today and I can’t see anywhere where it’s been cancelled. It will be a long wait for her to see what happens , what is the outcome of this Covid as to whether she can ever go back to Buckingham palace and ever resume any sort of duties that she’s been doing for her whole life! I ache for her, it must hurt her to the core because that’s what she’s committed to and it’s so it’s so upsetting.

I also think this is Prince Harry and having him return to the fold after these years of manipulations and machinations and lies and every other adjective that I don’t want to continue to keep saying about that woman Madam. Soon Harry will be reunited with his family if he has already not been. Again l repeat for the 10th time, 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂, I’m sticking with what I have said, I do believe something happened at Canada House and the next day at Harbottle and Lewis. I heard that they were going to do this last week and they’ve done it now. On the street in front of of President Trump’s huge building that he owns or I think he owns it in New York City in huge letters painted in like neon yellow paint, I think it would flash in the dark it’s so bright, Black Lives Matter has been painted along the whole block. I don’t know how the defacement of public property is allowed. I understand that Americans have free-speech under the first amendment, I believe it is, but you can’t yell fire in a crowded theatre and I don’t know how are you can deface public property. OK so we have boarding Charlotte three happy faces with the hats and those blowy things that unfurl Prince George’s birthday is in July 22 he is going to be seven years old can you believe that wow! And then we have B boarding G George with for horrified faces. Well we know it’s not because George is afraid of flying because he absolutely loves it I’ll do all the children. I think this is the first one is it a reference to Charlotte and celebrating George’s birthday the second one I think is a reference to George going to boarding school which has been talked about for a while now and I brought that up in the riddle again yesterday. And I think the four horrified faces of George going off to boarding school would be William and Catherine and Charlotte and Louis that’s what I think this is .

We have been given clues that the Cambridge family is taking a vacation and it would be nice to take it and celebrate George’s birthday don’t you think? Ok so in capital letters we have CBG. MM ANON Very much enjoys using the Star Trek reference of Jim that line from Star Trek is Spock but not as we knew him. So in the UK outdoor pools can open July 11 and on July 25 indoor pools and gyms and the like can open then. So yes they will be gyms and they will be open but not as we knew them before. They will be of course social distancing hand sanitizing smaller classes all of the usual bells and whistle’s that go along with the our new normal. I think people will just be glad to get back to their workouts and get out of the house and connecting with people even though they’re 6 feet away or 2 m or one meat or whatever the social distance will be at that time it’ll just be good for everybody physically and emotionally.

President Bolsonaro, as I said yesterday was at a press conference and he was wearing mask and he proceeded to tell the reporter that he had tested positive for COVID-19 which when he took off his mask continue to talk but then walked backwards. It was very bizarre. This is about the fifth clue about Brazil and now the president of Brazil also the song Brazil has been used a couple of times in the last week or so. I made a note this morning and I don’t know if anybody else had a chance to read it but I was thinking last night and then have you guys ever read the book the boys from Brazil or seen the 🎥 The Boys From Brazil? The book is written by I are 11 and that’s it it’s a story of how the Nazis some of them the higher-ups and the scientist escape to Brazil and they proceeded to breed a master race of young male clones I think it’s just male been a while since I’ve seen that movie. We do know it’s a no well proven fact but after the second world war ended many high-ranking Nazis snuck out of Germany and took refuge in Brazil. In fact there’s a large population of German people still living in Brazil. The Simon Wiesenthal society has for decades made it their mandate to bring to justice or not you were criminals and many of them have been found in that area rather that country. Now I don’t know if this is related to what the clues are about but I look at what’s happening in the world in the rise of fascism and who the backers are and the circles that Madam floated in literally luscious yachting it’s all about your really dangerous people with a lot of power. Oh this court trial her whatever case between amber Heard and Johnny Depp is just absolutely horrific it’s just all-around horrific. yesterday we heard about what his lunches were she took a picture of his lunch which was a huge cup of whiskey and cigarettes and four lines of cocaine and I forget what else was there and today in court we have them in a rage fight or Johnny Depp hurled a bottle of red wine at her.. Oh sometimes I wish the celebrity stuff that would just be kept out of the papers because this just is nothing but a sideshow of the sadness and with pathetic lives with people who have more money than you and I in than all of everybody on Tumblr put together will ever have and how it’s just wasted. But more than that though, how young beautiful people who are so talented just absolutely waste their lives and how abusive people are. I just find it so sad.

IOC allow protest? …………

The international Olympic committee has been battling with this issue. They have been trying to decide whether or not they will allow or penalize athletes for any demonstration of taking a knee or raising a fist or anything like that. The whole point of the Olympics is to unite the world in the form of athletics it’s kind of a diplomatic effort if you will like. Do you want to kind of be like “Switzerland” but they were a neutral in these kind of political issues. They are there for the sport and for the sake of the sport in and healthy competition not for political opinions and protests. So last I heard and have read they haven’t made a permanent decision about that yet. I know it’s been on the docket for quite some time and they’ll have to make a decision one way or the other. And I think either either way they go in making decisions I will be very upset people on both sides.

Various places are making various plans for back to school in September. The general consensus is the children need to get back to school even out of school for five months and many are falling behind. There are also many children who who miss nutrition if they’re not at school and as we have read and heard about there’s been an increase in addiction increase in domestic violence and that sort of thing and just the change of routine and structure am just been very detrimental to everybody but especially our most vulnerable children. And so part of the expectation will be and I think we need to all look at this going forward is that we will be wearing masks for a very long time. Some articles say this will be the new normal. Some scientists say Covid19 and the like, will never leave us. Going forward this will be our new normal in terms of social distancing in the plastic screens by the tills and between tables and restaurants and mask and all that sort of thing.

Finally sweet finally team sports are resuming. This weekend the cricket resumes and they are trialling a rather interesting thing of course there won’t be an audience but they are trialling putting loud cheers in and the audio as if there was a crowd present, to see if that makes a difference in how the players play. I think that’s a really interesting thing to do. We do know in sports how much the the athletes feed off the energy of the crowd and vice versa it’s all a very what’s the word pause visceral experience he kind of cheering and screaming and yelling when you get out all your frustrations while you’re cheering for your favourite team and it’s a it’s a healthy experience all the way around!

don’t cruise ………………

Well if you’re looking for a holiday they are suggesting anything but cruising! It is always a high-risk activity anyway because there’s so much food on display all the time and there’s all you always hear about food poisoning and bouts of people getting ill on cruise ships from that reason. Now adding Covid19 to the equation, just don’t 🚢cruise! That’s the recommendation and actually I’m quite surprised they’re even doing cruises but I guess they need money so badly that they’ll take whatever bookings they can get.

Glee was a television show on the Fox channel in America about a high school musical club I think. I never watched it but it was immensely popular. There have been a number of young actors suffer from that show that have perished. A young woman by the name of Naya Rivera, her baby child was found in a boat today and the assumption is that she jumped and she drowned herself in the water. Just absolutely tragic and it’s just horrible. Condolences to her family, friends and fans.

The app is down is frozen and everybody who had saved Tic Tok messages have lost all their saved messages, their favourites are gone! They have lost everything and they’re not even sure if they’ll be able to recover the app and get it back up and going! So needless to say everybody who has been coming in so enamoured with Tic Tok is really really upset right now!

There has been been a tragic accident in East London today. A crane a large crane, red in colour, you know if those are the things that they use to build things wow I am an architect eh? Sad to say an 85-year-old lady was killed and she’s still with her body is still trapped in the house. They have sent another crane in to help with the recovery.

Dame Vera Lynn who song just celebrated have the anniversary at the end of the first world war just a few short months ago. She died just after celebrating that anniversary, she was 103 years old. She is honoured today with a flypast from two Spitfires as crowds lined the streets of her Sussex village for her funeral - on the 80th anniversary of start of Battle of Britain. I Wonder if the Duchess of Sussex was there to pay her respects? She personified the the morale of many soldiers during World War II. The power of music we all know how powerful music it is. This whole court case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard it’s just sinking more in a very filthy territory. The female in the relationship allegedly was so mad that the male, was two hours late to her birthday party that she did a BM in his bed. Now there’s some mixup saying it was her dog’s BM was not her own BM. Either way it’s all just terrible.I wonder if this is a precursor somehow, to somewhat numb us to what’s going to come out of the MOS trial , facts that will be made public about madam, facts and the videos related to Madam. We will have heard such horrific things like this and then will hear regarding her it’ll be maybe a little easier to take I’m not sure.What we heard was that he didn’t cooperate with something and she had a BM in the bed kind of like a dog goes BM in your bed or in your shoes if he is mad at you. Just disgusting that adults behave like this I just can’t believe it.

This weekend would’ve been the finals at Wimbledon. Today Catherine made a call and she look absolutely gorgeous in green I went to post that to my blog this morning. I made a snarky comment I said soon as that was posted we can expect the next video of Madam should be the same hairstyle as she’s madly looking for a green dress with athletes is on it and a bow that Catherine space was wearing on her left chest.

Catherine was kind of cheeky in how she presented her special guest. It was just her first and then she so cutely told them in the children as who’s are somebody special here with me and it turned out to be so Andy Murray so I needless to say everybody was very excited. They spent time talking about tennis and different strategies that sort of thing. The children also got to ask Catherine questions and then came around to their families and the lockdown. And there were questions about things like what did they do during lockdown. It was just a really nice back-and-forth video call Catherine is so good at that.

Of notes and he worry so anywhere he does have a history of having his name and his face on some mints so I picture here I hope it shows up when I when it’s posted.I also put the link underneath the picture doesn’t show up because I charge for pictures in before and they haven’t worked. And law enforcement found that to be very effective in stopping some crimes. But that of course was done away with because human rights and all that stuff. Yes yes yes the ability to go to the beach has been returned and they are taking full advantage of it by not going back home I just saw her sleeping on the beach. At a vegetable farm in Herefordshire, a large outbreak of COVID-19 has occurred amongst the seasonal workers. 73 people have been confirmed positive of having COVID-19.. The produce from this farm are sent to Tesco, Aldi ,Sainsbury’s, ASDA, etc all the usual food stores. so might start to see some empty bench shelves or a massive increase in price I’m not certain of that. this is no workers are all house in trailers. Masks, we have been been told not to wear them, they’re not helpful, then oh yes you must wear them. I think we should all go back to , remember the bubble boy? from Seinfeld? like we should all get big bubbles and then we could just roll around in our bubbles and have like a hole for the bathroom, a hole for food. I guess it’s just crazy already. No now I’ve read and heard they’re making masks compulsory in for children. Try get a child to keep on a mask for more than 1/10th of a second or to wear it properly and avoid touching their face. Oh this is so unrealistic as we prepare to send our children back to school. I’m not being negative, I’m being realistic because you all know little children I mean we know how it is as an adult uncomfortable those masks are, children will have a tough time with that. I saw on the blog the other day somebody had a picture with a mask on their dog or was that it was a cat with a cat like wow I wonder how long the cat kept that mask on for.

Just something that has been quietly going on behind the scenes for years for decades we saw I have seen it in minor hockey in Canada and junior hockey players in the NHL have come out or written books about their sexual abuse when they were young men. Many of the Olympic gymnasts on the American team that did so well in Brazil, have come out and and accused their doctor l believe, of long-term sexual abuse and it’s rampant. So I guess that’s another symptom to look out for even in children to I would think.

I told you last week of the what’s the word quarantine at the vegetable farm in Herefordshire. I think I also mentioned that they were being guarded by police so know that none of them believe and I believe at the time 73 of the hundred workers have tested positive. Well yesterday I read they were being offered free cigarettes and alcohol to comply with staying in quarantine. But here I see that’s four of them have managed to escape the luxury life of life in a trailer with free booze and free ciggies!! So the police are actually actively looking for them at this time. Because it is last week they were seasonal workers in today in the paper it seems most of them are from Eastern Europe. So I’m not sure that you’re thinking they’re going to try and make a run for going home or I wonder who has their passports with their employer hold their passports and I’m not sure.

Yes, New York City’s Public Schools are Still Segregated

Brown v. Board of Ed (1954), the Supreme Court ruling that essentially overturned the “separate but equal” doctrine espoused in Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896), was a landmark case for the Civil Rights Movement [1]. In it, the Court argued that segregation in public schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, which states that “no state shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws” [2]. As a result of this ruling, integration efforts began throughout the country, with the intent to equalize academic opportunities for minority students and diversify school settings. Unfortunately, 66 years later, the legacy of segregation in schools continues to plague cities and school districts across the country.

It may come as a surprise that New York, which is generally considered liberal and progressive, is the state with the greatest number of segregated schools in the country [3].

In 2009, Black and Latino students in New York “had the highest concentration in intensely-segregated public schools (less than 10% white enrollment) ... and the most uneven distribution with white students across schools” [3].

New York City largely contributes to this reality: though Black and Hispanic students make up 70% of its public-school system, they only make up about 10% of the student population at the city’s nine specialized high schools [4].

Last year, only seven of the 895 spots at Stuyvesant, the most selective public school in the city, were offered to Black students (down from 10 offers the previous year, and 13 the year before)[5].

Perhaps most concerning is that this form of educational segregation has significantly worsened in recent decades: in 1982, 51% of the students at Brooklyn Tech (one of the 9 specialized schools) were black, a number that drastically reduced to 6% by 2016 [4].

This stark reality in New York is partially due to a long history of resistance to reform. Protests and school boycotts led by civil rights activists in the 1960s in response to the lack of implementation of the Brown v Board of Ed ruling were met with significant opposition from (mostly white) parents who favored segregation [6]. Then, in 1971, lawmakers in Albany passed the Hecht-Calandra Act, mandating that admissions to Specialized High Schools rely solely on a singular admissions test [7]. While some defend the Act and the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) as a means to maintain the academic rigor of these schools, there is great debate as to whether or not it has harmed communities of color in NYC [6]. As test preparation for the SHSAT has created an industry of test prep centers that offer tutoring costing thousands of dollars, reformers argue that Black and Hispanic students that are often low-income are at a disadvantage, and less likely to be able to join these elite schools [4]. Mayor de Blasio developed a plan to repeal the Hecht-Calandra Act, but recently changed course, after having received much backlash from specialized high school alumni groups, parents, and others [8].

Even if the SHSAT were replaced by more holistic indicators of achievement and intelligence, much would still have to change. Many supporters of the SHSAT have suggested that the problem minority students face in the NYC public school system is not the SHSAT, but rather, the lack of “high quality education in Black and Latino communities,” and the elimination of enrichment schools in these neighborhoods [9]. The reality of the situation is that even if the SHSAT does perpetuate racism, it is only

the tip of the iceberg. Black and Latino students in NYC face educational barriers that result in academic segregation much earlier on than high school. Public elementary and middle schools in wealthier, white neighborhoods have better resources and opportunities (both academic and extracurricular) for their mostly white students, but the opposite is generally true of the schools that children in minority neighborhoods are zoned to. This type of zoning contributes to the segregation of students, as minorities that are zoned to attend lower-performing schools in their earlier years are less likely to be prepared for and admitted into highly selective, high-performing schools in their later years than their white counterparts.

Thus, while eliminating the SHSAT is a useful way to allow a more diverse population to access elite public schools in NYC, reform at earlier levels of public education would be more efficient. This should involve both removal of screening for younger students but also increased allocation of funds to poor-performing schools. While there is currently no singular, city-wide plan for integration, some school districts have implemented policies that could guide the way for the rest of New York. Brooklyn Community District 15, which includes the wealthy neighborhoods of Park Slope and Carroll Gardens (but also immigrant-dense, low-income neighborhoods), has made some of the most sweeping changes for integration in all of New York [10]. Its new program, called the D15 Diversity Plan, eliminates selective admissions criteria from all of the district’s middle schools, including those that are very “sought-after” [10]. Replacing previous admissions systems will be a “choice-based district-wide lottery,” that gives “extra weight to students who come from low-income families, are learning English as a new language, or are homeless” [11,10].

The plan adopted by District 15 is hailed as inclusive and considered one of the best attempts at equalizing access to public schools. However, many districts remain segregated. To address this issue, de Blasio has adopted some of the recommendations made by the Student Diversity advisory Group he created, including the provision of additional funding for five districts throughout the boroughs to implement integration plans similar to Brooklyn’s District 15 [12].

So far, it seems that these patchwork efforts at integration have frustrated reformers calling for larger-scale change. Surprisingly, the COVID-19 Pandemic might have created the conditions for wide-spread reform, as the quarantine and distance-learning have led to the collapse of some of the most important metrics of achievement and performance that highly selective screening admissions processes rely on, such as attendance and standardized tests [13]. The need to create a new admissions system for a post-COVID New York City may perhaps be a one-of-a-kind “blank slate�� opportunity to champion integration in the largest public school system in the nation. I hope that the de Blasio administration will react effectively and contribute to the Black Lives Matter movement and the fight against systemic racism by eliminating systems that have maintained public school segregation. Perhaps 2020 will be the year that Brown v. Board of Ed will come to fruition - we must not let the opportunity pass.

Explaining The Law Of Operation Varsity Blues

Almost 2 years since Operation Varsity Blues caused a ripple in college admissions and media culture across the country, the scandal is still being talked about. Operation Varsity Blues, more famously known as the “college admissions scandal” brought over 53 parents, administrators, and coaches to the mercy of the law. The operation gained a great deal of media attention when it came to light that certain celebrities like Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman were found to be blameworthy in the scandal. However, almost two years later, across social media, hundreds of thousands of users have expressed that they do not understand the legal charges brought to those who were found to be a part of the operation. Initially, some of the charges brought to those who were caught, were conspiracy to commit felony mail fraud, and honest services mail fraud [1]. Those are charges that are not very often heard of by the public, hence the wave of confusion as to what exactly they mean. Later, the federal government brought charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering, against 33 of the 53. First, the most important part of these charges is that they are federal charges and were not brought by the state of California where the individuals resided.

Pertaining to the first charge, conspiracy to commit felony mail fraud; this means that the accused is found to have used the United States mail system as a means to lure customers into handing over their money or other assets, through misrepresentations or false statements. An individual can be found guilty of conspiracy to commit felony mail fraud if the action meets two requirements: there must be an agreement between two or more individuals to commit said fraud using mail communications, and at least one party in the agreement acts to follow through with the plan [2]. Since the parents in Operation Varsity Blues all made agreements and payments as bribes to Rick Singer who constructed and ran the entire scheme, they met both requirements of guilt, and hence, the majority of them pled guilty to the charge. The next charge, honest services fraud, is a crime as defined by 18 U.S.C § 1346 where a party attempts to defraud and deprive another of their intangible right of honest services [3]. Honest services fraud is usually too vague to convict unless a bribe or kickback is involved, as stated by the U.S Supreme Court. In the case of the college admission scandal, all guilty parties did indeed provide bribes and met all the requirements to be guilty of mail fraud as well, which is how the federal government brought the charge. The final charge is conspiracy to commit money laundering which is a more known white-collar crime. Money laundering is defined as “taking any action with property of any form which is either wholly or in part the proceeds of a crime that will disguise the fact that that property is the proceeds of a crime or obscure the beneficial ownership of said property” [4]. Since the parents knowingly laundered their bribes through Singer’s corporation and charity, as well as transferring overseas money into the United States for this purpose, they were found guilty of money laundering as well.

As famous as this scandal was, the charges were either misunderstood or not understood at all by the public, which created a media frenzy that is still being talked about to this day. Many wonder if those who donate large sums of money to a university to give their children a better shot at an admission is equivalent to what was done in the college admissions scandal. From a legal lens, donating money or a building to a university without asking for anything in return or using said donation as a means to guarantee an admission, is not equivalent to money laundering or mail fraud. The elite communities across the United States have long been donating to universities in a manner that does not break any laws. It is an important legal distinction that a donation is not the same as a bribe in the eyes of the law. A donation is given without expecting something in return, whereas with a bribe like in the scandal, there is an agreement and expectation between the parties that one will benefit in a specific way, in exchange for money or assets. Although many universities will accept donations with the unspoken expectation of an improved change of admission, the important part in the lens of the law, is that it is unspoken and that there are no guarantees. Although donations to improve chances of admissions are also a point of controversy and a flaw within the admissions system itself, it is not something that will usually be found blameworthy in the law. The college admissions scandal was the first scandal that was so public and controversial simply because there was a specific intent to break the law in order to guarantee an admission into an elite university.

Eligible candidates are invited to attend WALK-IN-INTERVIEW for the following posts on contractual basis in the extramural research project funded by SERB titled “To see the incidence and attempt to find the aetiology of incidental pleural adhesions seen during medicolegal autopsy at AIIMS Bhopal awarded to Dr. Jayanthi Yadav Principal Investigator and Additional Professor of FMT at AIIMS Bhopal.

Consolidated Pay: Rs. 31,000/- per month + HRA for 2 years Rs 35,000/- per month + HRA for 3rd year

Age not exceeding: 28 years

Duration of contract: 3 years

Essential Qualifications: M.Sc in Microbiology/ Zoology/ Biotechnology/ Forensic Science with biology as one of the subjects in graduation level.

Candidates with NET/SLET/GATE will be preferred.

Desirable Qualifications / Experience: Experience in field of forensic biology

Primary job Requirement: Research and analysis of autopsy samples in microbiology and histopathology

TERMS & CONDITIONS

1. It is candidates’ responsibility to ascertain and ensure their eligibility as per the prescribed qualification and experience. 4. Expiry of Contract: The contract will automatically expire on completion of period specified above until it is renewed with mutual consent for the decided period. The contractual appointment can be terminated at any time by either side by giving 30 days’ notice or salary in lieu thereof.

5. Leave: The leave entitlement of the appointee shall be governed in terms of the SERB leave policy governing extramural / short term research projects as amended from time to time.

6. Accommodation: No hostel or any other accommodation will be provided by the Institute / Principal Investigator.

7. The candidate who is already in government service shall submit ‘No Objection Certificate” from the present employer at the time of walk-in-interview.

8. The prescribed qualification is minimum and mere possessing the same does not entitle any candidate for selection.

9. The candidate should bring along original certificates in support of his/her age, educational/ professional qualification, experience etc., two recent passport size colour photographs and a one set of self-attested photocopies of the relevant documents failing which he/she will not be allowed to participate in the walk-in-interview test.

Candidates are shortlisted for an interview based on their performance in the National Entrance Test and/or academic performance. Regular(RR): Fulltime residential research candidate.

Continuing Doctoral Programme (CDP): This if for the candidates working in industry or as a faculty in any educational institution. In this category the candidate is given advance admission with 90 days of residency requirement in 1st year and on successful completion of 1st year, the admission is confirmed with the expected minimum 2 years of full time residential requirement on campus for completing coursework and a major part of thesis work. After 2-years, the candidate may be permitted to go back to parent organization subject to significant progress in thesis work. Subsequently, the candidate is expected to complete at least 2 weeks of residency at the Institute for each semester all through the PhD programme. Financial Support

Students joining the Ph.D. program as regulars (RR) will be considered for Institute Fellowship based on the following norms:

1. Post Graduate Degree in Basic Science with NET/GATE Qualification or Graduate Degree in Professional Courses (B.Tech/B.E.) with NET/GATE Qualification or Post Graduate Degree in Professional Courses (M.Tech/M.E. etc) : Rs. 31,000/- per month.

2. Qualifications mention at (i) above with two years of Research Experience: Rs. 35,000/- per month.

Admission Procedure

In view of the current COVID 19 situation, for 2020-21 Sem II, admission will be offered based on online interviews only.

Admission is generally offered on the basis of an interview, which is supplemented by a written test if necessary. The Institute will invite a limited number of candidates for a written test and interview based on the academic records, statement of purpose, etc. The final selection will be mainly based on academic credentials, written test and/or interview.

The written test is generally based on the topics related to general aptitude (logical reasoning, analytical and numerical ability, etc.), writing skills, and basic courses of various disciplines at undergraduate level. The candidates who do not qualify in the written test need not appear for interview. The reserved category candidates will be given due relaxation in cutoff marks as per the norms.

The candidates called for the Test / Interview will be reimbursed any amount exceeding Rs.750/- for to and fro single second-sleeper class railway fare by the shortest route from their place of residence to the Institute /venue of the Test / Interview. For example, in case of total railway fare of Rs.1400/- the candidate will be reimbursed Rs.650/-. It is required to produce evidence (railway ticket) in support of the claim.

In addition to the announced admission cycles with prescribed deadline of application, the Institute also considers applications any time of the year in case of exceptional candidates. Based on the qualifications of the candidates and the need of the discipline concerned, applications received are processed through duly constituted selection committees at regular intervals.
