Best Books Read in April 2023
A recap of the best books I read each month in 2023.
The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
I generally prefer my fantasy to be more fantastical, but this leaned more into the historical fiction aspect and I was still so invested. Wecker challenges readers to think and asks really interesting questions. It is pretty slow paced for the majority of the story and follows quite a few characters and timelines.
Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
I didn't know how much I wanted a Rumplestilskin retelling until I read this but wow, did this live up to the hype. I enjoyed the way Novik engaged with the antisemitism of the fairy tale. I am excited to read more of her work!
Honorable Mention
Frizzy by Claribel A. Ortega
Middle grade graphic novel that was sweet and heartfelt.

"A few Frog House witches sat on the lawn of their emerald-colored house, pink-and-green philodendrons draping the slated sides like one of Thorn's elaborate crochet projects." -The Golden Frog Games, Claribel A. Ortega (2023)

Quote
Being trans is rarely even the most interesting thing about a person. Representation of joyful trans characters can be life altering when all you see in the world around you are trans people facing countless horrors.
Over at Teen Vogue, I talk to some authors about writing stories where trans people get to have epic adventures and romances, and above all moments of trans joy.

Bookworm Will Review 2025 (#2)
Tumblr media
Title: 'Ghost Squad'
Author: Claribel A. Ortega
Rating: 2 / 5
Review: (SPOILERS)
I really liked this, granted I was not the target demographic, but still! It was super cute and as Ortega's debut novel, it hit a lot of marks for me :)
I can really see young readers enjoy reading about Luce and her BFF Syd having to save their town from a literal hurricane storm of angry spirits. Even though it was a bit formulaic, the fire fly representation for Luce's family felt super creative and different. The same goes for the magic system as a whole, very quirky, a simplified, yet unique style of ghost catching.
If anyone knows me, knows I live for good banter and the banter and relationship between Luce and Syd felt SO realistic while not being forced. They felt real. Syd's grandmother, Babette, did steal the show quite a bit so we can't forget about her. #IconicQueen
While it was straight forward, you got to see a good sense of how Ortega has developed as a reader between this and Witchlings (which I read books 1-3 last year). PLUS A TOAD REFERENCE ON PG. 100 of Ghost Squad haha That made me happy lol

Spookoplathon Wrap-Up
Spookoplathon is a readathon hosted by Becca from Becca and the Books. This one is based on her old TBR game which in turn is based on Monopoly. You simply move around the board to get your prompts. Unlike other readathons I’ve participated in, there aren’t any teams, bonus prompts or a story. It’s just straight forward prompts to create your TBR. There are two different ways to play: roll as you…

Ghost Squad by Claribel A. Ortega
“Shortly before Halloween, Lucely and her best friend, Syd, cast a spell that accidentally awakens malicious spirits, wreaking havoc throughout St. Augustine. Together, they must join forces with Syd’s witch grandmother, Babette, and her tubby tabby, Chunk, to fight the haunting head-on and reverse the curse to save the town and Lucely’s firefly spirits before it’s too late,” (Ghost Squad, 2020).
Grades 9-12: The Silver Eyes (Five Nights at Freddy’s 1) by Scott Cawthon & Kira Breed-Wrisley
“Ten years after the horrific murders at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza that ripped their town apart, Charlie, whose father owned the restaurant, and her childhood friends reunite on the anniversary of the tragedy and find themselves at the old pizza place which had been locked up and abandoned for years. After they discover a way inside, they realize that things are not as they used to be. The four adult-sized animatronic mascots that once entertained patrons have changed. They now have a dark secret … and a murderous agenda,” (The Silver Eyes, 2016).
