030.   the base of a large waterfall . from the setting prompt for Cinna (if you’d like!)
thank you 🌺
Thank you so much for the prompt! This is my take on the diamond scene with Nia in the snow from Chapter 6, Book 3.
Mushrooms and Other Impurities
WC: 1.3k
Characters: Nia & Cinna (mc) from Blades.
Premise: Cinna opens up. Nia doesn't know if this is a learning or an unlearning. They are both so full of love and devotion they don't know where to put it.
“Perhaps they should deify you.” The words hang in the air like a eulogy. Nia doesn't know if she's said the wrong thing - a barefooted girl who sees no religion, who prays to the wheat for her daily bread - she's everything Nia is created against. But Cinna is well, malleable. She scoops up snow and tosses it into the air. The priestess drags her through the wild, cold scenery and she laughs and laughs until the colour clings to her skin.
What if Nia had just spoken something into absolution? Something horrifying? Something so wretched and cursed? She calms herself, but her heart is too far gone. It starts with a seed of doubt. It always does. It's a wicked thing, this.. cause she is fighting for. It is fickle, it runs like melted snow and her hands are too slow to chase after it. It requires the holiest of hands. Time passes and Nia is more a martyr for someone's story than a priestess for change. Her words become curses, her tongue is venomous and her hands darken into charred remains of a Shadow there once was. What is this cause again?
“Oh a waterfall!” Cinna exclaims and Nia rushes after her.
The waterfall is frozen in the snow, but there is a thin line of water that branches through it and flows into a small pond with lilies made out of starlight floating on it. It is breathtaking and nearly impossible. The more they grow closer, the more warm the air feels. There's colour all around hidden away in the deep frost. Cinna rushes into the water, standing under it and winces as it hits the top of her head with tremendous pressure. She steadies herself on a boulder as sharp cries fill the air.
“Cinna! It is--”
“I am fine! This is wonderful!”
“You are going to hurt yourself!”
“No, it is meant to! You don't feel a thing! It is --” Cinna chokes on the water as it seeps into her ears and throat and quickly moves out of the waterfall to catch some air. “It is meant to hurt, you know? My caregiver - he used to cool ores by letting it sit under these beautiful falls in the forest -- until one day, he made Kade and I experience it. He'd always said it is meant to hurt you, throw you off your balance but - it cleanses your soul, clears you of impurities.”
“Impurities?” Nia perks up.
“My caregiver believed in customs of his own. I have a feeling he made up all the Gods and the heroes in his stories to Kade.” Cinna laughs. “It is nothing. His stories are so -- small, so fictitious.”
“No, you cannot say that- they can't simply be stories.” Nia protests.
“He doesn't believe in the afterlife and he has been my religion for a long, long time.” Cinna sighs.
“It must be a sign, then. That he's spoken all of this into -- this.” Nia presents the world before them. “Into existence. He must carry such an affinity for the Light. This must all be a sign, Cinna. Don't you ever think so low of yourself like this. The Light isn't just for the Gods, it lives within storytellers. They write and speak and sing things into existence. This beautiful world might as well be a song your guardian might have sung many, many years ago.”
“He would have gone to the Hells. Him and his songs.” Cinna swallows.
“And why so?”
“Because he didn't believe in the Light or the Shadow."
Nia watches Cinna closely, her hands are locked in a prayer. She averts her gaze quickly, watching the falls instead. There's considerable silence. Nia hums in agreement, there's a little joke hidden in subtext only for Cinna's ears that Nia prays the Gods don't hear. It's a silly little song and dance. Perhaps belief is all that takes to will something into existence. Nia looks at her hands and her veins have something dark and stringy in them. It calms her down. She wills a hearth of fire, allowing Cinna to dry herself.
“How is it like?” Nia asks. “The falls?”
Cinna chuckles. “Well now you must experience it for yourself.”
“It is -- well, I am -- this is frightening! What if I get washed away?”
“You won't.”
“Cinna there is a possibility I will. This is - a mystery, not even Light can -- help me. This is not magic, this is worrisome and horrifying and-”
“I will catch you. Do you trust me?”
Nia swallows. “The fact that you are asking it is - preposterous! I trust you! I don't trust -- well, this is -- what do you mean it gets rid of your impurities?”
“I suppose it makes you feel the warmth around you.” Cinna tries to explain as she cuts up twigs and burns it in the fire. “It is a different kind of warmth. Have you ever had the sun on your face? A pleasant morning? It disturbs your sleep, it is not the most favourite feeling but it brings out the blush in your cheeks -- in this wonderful way. And it - weaves around your hands and legs--”
“The Temple has always been bright but - we don't see a lot of the sun, no.”
“I am not going to push you. But if this is indeed the work of a God - Old or New - they really miss home.”
“The Temple has always made me feel so pure.”
“It makes you feel like yourself.” Cinna ties the twigs up together and draws some string from her pouch.
“Perhaps I can -- dip my feet in.”
Nia approaches the waterfall cautiously, like a deer in the forest. She skips into the water, feeling the sun in her grasp. She bows and lets the water hit the back of her neck and Gods, it hurts like hell. Her heart slows down but her veins darken a charcoal colour and she nearly chokes, gasping at the air. Closing her eyes does not make the experience more pleasant, it makes her wallow with helplessness. It reminds her of home. It reminds her of a million things. It reminds her of a lingering question left unanswered. It is godless and Hellish and damning. The Light in her falls like tears as she cries. The gold doesn't mix with the water, it simply swallows it whole. Her fingertips turn a violent shade of menacing violet but that too, drips out of her hands like hot blood.
Slowly she steps out and it feels like being born again. The sunlight hits her face and she's wanted in this world. For a second she forgets the afterlife and scoops out some snow. She spots Cinna, her back turned to her, as she strums a makeshift instrument and hums to catch a tune out of thin air.
“Was it nice? I saw you enjoying it.” Cinna gives her a knowing smile.
“It did clean the cuts off my hands. Although, the bruises still remain.” Nia observes. She meets Cinna's eyes. “Maybe it is just water. Neither enchanted, nor cursed. There's something beautiful about it. But incredibly wounding! Gods, the water has this force of its own.”
“Here - I wrote a little song-” Cinna plays her instrument and it is imperfect but it sounds like a familiar hymn. “I don't know what the words are yet. Perhaps I'll give it to Kade. That boy and his books and his worries could use something new.”
Nia smiles softly. “They should deify you.”
“Defy or deify?” Cinna jokes. “Then again, I am no emperor. Or a God.”
“Where do you think you will go, then?”
“I will find myself in a corner. Like a mushroom.”
Nia laughs. “I won't have you undermine yourself!”
“But maybe, it is good that way, right? You find nameless Gods and forgotten kingdoms in patches of grass and mounds of clay. It feeds you and keeps you warm.”
“But that can't simply be enough. You mean so much more, you deserve so much more.”
“Is existence not enough? Should it be given a name and a purpose to be deserving?”
---
A/N: Originally I wanted to write this for Imtura and Cinna but would be weird to find a waterfall in the middle of a coral farm. Not as weird as this one but strange to say the least. Also double fun that I wrote this literally right after the Nia scene which means I'm not sure if the other characters have scenes with waterfalls in them and I will have to go resume playing the rest of the premium scenes with my already dwindling supply of diamonds to see if I've made a fool of myself or not.
