Ciné-ONU Film Screening of "THE CLEANERS"

Date and time: Sunday 23 September 2018, 11:00-13:15

Location: Cinema Cinerama Empire, Rue de Carouge 72, 1205 Genève

*Free entrance. Seating on a first-come, first-served basis.*

The screening is organized with Ciné-ONU and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea, with support from Cinérama Empire and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The film explores the shadow industry of digital cleaning to expose the dangers to democracy and human rights it represents. It follows five "digital scavengers" who are employed, in secret, to delete "inappropriate" content off the internet. In a parallel struggle, we meet people around the globe whose lives are dramatically affected by online censorship. 

A typical "cleaner" must observe and rate thousands of often deeply disturbing images and videos every day, leading to lasting psychological impacts. 

Yet underneath their work lie profound questions: what makes an image art or propaganda? What defines journalism? Where is the point of balance for social media to be neither an unlegislated space nor a forum rife with censorship?

New—often disruptive—technologies that combine elements of the digital, material and biological are ushering in sweeping changes to the ways we organize our societies and our lives, bringing many new challenges and opportunities. How can we ensure that human rights considerations are included in the design and implementation of the emerging technologies that shape our daily lives and interactions? How can emerging technologies be leveraged to achieve human rights objectives? And what are the limitations of the current international human rights framework in terms of accountability, transparency, and regulation of the technologies themselves as well as their impacts on human rights?

Restaurant sur un plateau

J'suis allé au resto

Avec mes deux petiots. Il était 18h45,  On a attendu sous la pluie.

Sésame, ouvre toi.. St’plaît, allez! Le palais des saveurs a ouvert ses portes à 19h pétantes,  Pas une seconde avant.

Serveurs débordés; Pas moyen de commander; Faut dire qu'ils sont débiles ou quoi: Y en a que deux!

Venez mes chéris, on s'en va!

Je sais,..., vous voulez un dessert, Mais là, ils ont mis 45 minutes Juste pour amener la carte; Et ça fait 20 minutes qu'on fait signe Pour qu'on prenne notre commande. C'est mal barré. Vous comprenez pas…. C'est normal… Mes Chéris, vous êtes trop petits… On va prendre le gâteau au chocolat mais Ailleurs….

Deuxième resto,  "On ne sert pas que les desserts, il faut aussi prendre un plat; sinon, on ne vous accepte pas". C'est vrai, c'est la règle d'or, j'avais oublié. Mea culpa.

Troisième resto, le lendemain midi, On arrive à 11h55 Soit seulement 5 min à faire le pied de grue,  Dehors,  Avec les petits, Sur  sur un trottoir étroit, A regarder à travers la vitrine Le personnel du restaurant manger tranquillement leur repas, entourés de tables vides.  ET nous, on n’a même pas droit à une table avec un verre d’eau?Bougez pas les enfants!  On joue aux statues? Non, vous voulez pas? Une fois les fesses au chaud, on attend 30 minutes pour avoir le menu... Même pas d'eau sur la table. ça suffit,  On débarque de ce naufrage.

Le soir…. Coriace, je persiste à tenir la promesse du resto aux enfants. Je ne cèderai pas au McDo. On arrive à 18h58; ouf! Que deux minutes d'attente. Mais les petits ont les crocs.

“Quand est-ce qu'on mange?” Et ça y est, encore 40 minutes pour la carte.

Quatrième resto,  Non, à 13h il n'ont plus rien à manger... ???!!!

Heureusement que j'ai des supers fraises à la maison et même de la polenta!  C'est la super fête!  En plus, même si je suis riche, j’en ai marre d’être traité comme du bétail. Je préfère cuisiner, c’est plus gratifiant.

Mais quand même, je suis obstiné et veut voir mon pays d'origine réussir au moins une fois. Cinquième resto… C’était 18h40. “On peut manger?”  “Oui, oui. Restaurant, ici manger”, nous a répondu la serveuse du resto chinois comme si on était de gros débiles… Chez eux, au moins, on peut manger! C'est la fête!

Je croyais qu'il y avait une crise économique! Le tourisme est une grosse industrie, pourquoi la freiner? Que se passe-t-il? Pourquoi les restaurateurs font-ils tous pareil et les serveurs marchent tous à ce même pas martial, respirant du stress à gogo? Le chi-kong, ça doit bien marcher...

Toutes ces lois, toutes ces règles, toutes ces traditions Ne pensez-vous pas qu'il faut les revoir? Que penser de la démocratie directe? Dans mon pays ET vite! Et aussi dans les autres pays!

Que penser du revenu de base universel pour plus de liberté, plus d'intelligence et plus de diversité à l'économie de mon pays! Plus de liberté pour les employeurs, plus de sécurité pour tout le monde, moins de stress et plus de possibilité de prendre des risques donc d'innover. Et aussi dans les autres pays!

Défendons nos valeurs, ne nous laissons plus piétiner. Discuter dans son salon entre amis ne suffit plus. Réfléchissons à comment bouger et changer les choses efficacement. Ecrivons, faisons des images, re-tweetons/blogons/publions sur internet ou sur ce qui nous plaît, documentons-nous avec de l'information de qualité (sources fiables, documentés, avec des preuves scientifiques, des études et des chiffres). Inspirons-nous des révolutions récentes (printemps arabes, etc.) et appuyons-nous sur les forts qui sont prêts à nous aider comme l'ONU.  Visitons des pays qui pratiquent des démocraties directes ou qui fonctionnent, copions leurs bonnes idées et participons aux débats qui vont créer demain (Future of work, Universal Basic Income, Ciné ONU). Il faut tourner la page Sinon, on va en bouffer...

Quand chacun a peur et est sous pression, cela développe le chacun pour soi, l'agressivité et l'irrationnel. Le revenu de base universel est pour tout le monde. Pas besoin de classer les gens en catégories, pas de paperasse..... Juste la liberté de se former, de recevoir en fonction de ses besoins et de travailler plus efficacemment... en fonction de ses moyens, en reconnaissant le travail informel qui représente actuellement 60% des travailleurs, pourquoi ne pas les rémunérer comme les 40 autres??; de faire partie de la société, de l'améliorer, d'avoir l'opportunité penser à ce qu'il y a de mieux pour tous et de voter en conséquence.

Restaurant on a platter

I went to the restaurant

With my two darlings. It was 6:45 pm, We waited in the rain.

Sesame, open up .. Please, come on! The palace of flavours opened its doors at 7pm sharp, Not a second before.

Overwhelmed servers; no way to order,  must say that they are stupid or what? I can see only two of them!

Come on my darlings, we're leaving!

I know, ..., you want a dessert, But then they took 45 minutes just to bring the menu and it's been 20 minutes that we sign the waitress to take our order. You do not understand ... It's normal ... My little darlings, you're too young ... We'll take the chocolate cake but Elsewhere ....

Second restaurant, "We do not serve desserts only, you have to order a dish first; otherwise, we do not serve you. " That's right, it's the golden rule, my mistake. Mea culpa.

Third restaurant, the next day, We arrived at 11:55; only 5 minutes to crane outside, with the little ones, on a narrow sidewalk to watch through the panel windows the staff quietly eating their meals and surrounded by empty tables. AND, aren't we even entitled to a table with a glass of water?

Do not move children! Are we playing statues? No, you do not want to? Once our buttocks warm, we wait 30 minutes for the menu ... Not even water on the table. That's enough, We disembark this shipwreck.

In the evening ... Like chewy meat, I keep on my promise to the kids.  McDonald's is NOT an option. We arrive at 18:58, phew!  Only two minutes ahead of time but the little ones have fangs. "When do we eat?" And again, another 40 minutes  just for the menu.

Fourth restaurant, No way...  At 1pm they have nothing to eat ... ??? !!!

Fortunately I have great strawberries at home and even polenta! It's a great party! In addition, even if I am rich, I am tired of being treated like cattle.  I prefer to cook,  it's more rewarding.

But still, I'm stubborn and want to see my home country succeed at least once. Fifth restaurant ... At 6:40 pm, I ask: "Can we eat?" "Yes Yes. Restaurant, here to eat", said the waitress of the Chinese restaurant as if I was fat stupid ...  At last, we can eat!   Party Time!

I thought there was an economic crisis here! Tourism is a big industry, why refrain it? What is going on? Why are the restaurants all behaving likewise and the waiters all walking at the same martial pace, breathing stress all the way?  The chi-kong,  that must work well ...

All these laws, all these rules, all these traditions, Don’t you think they should be revisited? What about a direct democracy,  in my country, AND  very quickly!  And also in each country!

What about universal basic income for more freedom and more intelligence and more diversity to the economy of my country! Of each country! More freedom for employers, more security for everyone, less stress and more opportunity to take risks.

Let's defend our values, do not let us trample any more. Chatting in your living room with friends is not enough anymore. Let's think about how to move and change things effectively. Let's write, make images, re-tweet / blog / publish ... on the internet ... on what we like... Let's document ourselves with quality information (reliable sources, documented, with scientific evidence, studies and figures); Let us take inspiration from recent revolutions (Arab Spring, etc.) and accept the support of the strong ones who are ready to help us such as the UN and the Red Cross. Let's visit countries that practice direct or functioning democracies, copy their good ideas and participate in the debates that will create tomorrow (Future of work, Universal Basic Income, Tomorrow movie, Ciné ONU).

Otherwise, we will be eaten ...

When everyone is afraid and under pressure, it develops everyone for themselves, aggressiveness and irrationality.The universal basic income is for everyone. No need to categorize people, no paperwork..... Just the freedom to take time to train oneself, to receive according to one's needs and to work more efficiently... according to one's means... Recognising informal work which currently represents 60% of workers, why not pay them like the 40 others...; to be part of society, to improve it, to have the opportunity to think of what is best for everyone and to vote accordingly.
