It’s #Continental vs. #Imperial here but nobody’s going anywhere anytime soon - both of these old #landyachts are parts cars. In front is a Lee Iacocca masterpiece - the #LincolnContinental MKIII. The MkIII was a stab at the personal/luxury car market that #Ford itself had created in 1958 with the popular four-seat Thunderbird. Iacocca wanted #Lincoln to have some of the spoils of this market being enjoyed by GM via the Cadillac Eldorado, among others, and the 1969 MkIII, introduced in the spring of ’68, would prove a huge bonanza for #Lincoln, nearly doubling the division’s sales and outpacing the Eldo. In fairness, it did have a long introductory model year - the Caddy retook the sales lead by a nose in 1970 but the Mark then accelerated into the stratosphere, leaving the Eldo behind for the rest of the decade. #Chrysler was in on none of this. Overly conservative Chrysler chief Lynn Townsend thought that Chryslers and Imperials should only be full-sized, traditional vehicles - and so it was that Chrysler was the last major American brand that offered only “standard” full-sizers, right into 1974. The #Imperial had been it’s own make since 1954, but most people in the 1970s, as today, still referred to them as “Chrysler Imperials.” In part, that was because after 1967, Imperials had become a lot more like the regular Chryslers, to save costs. For 1974 all Chrysler full-sizes were treated to an ill-timed redesign - and it was now even harder to distinguish an Imperial from a Chrysler New Yorker. Imperial the brand, aimed at Cadillac and Lincoln, sold in extremely small numbers, and even though 1974 was a very good year by Imperial standards (14,483 cars sold), this was a dismal figure compared to the competition, and Imperial was dropped after 1975. That same year, Chrysler introduced a car very much in the MKIII mold - the #Cordoba - it proved a wildly successful idea - 150,105 Cordobas flew out of the showroom that first year.
