✨‘I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time… as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time… when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely’✨
Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
It was wonderful to be back at @thelondonlibrary for its first proper Christmas party (last year’s didn’t quite feel right for some reason), to see dear fellow LL friends & hear the new President, Helena Bonham Carter’s witty, intelligent, joyous speech where she talked about being the first female president and thanked those women writers who had gone before her and been shoved aside and overlooked. (luckily this has totally been resolved now and no sexism occurs in fiction or non fiction these days amirite ladies). She read some advice for people young and old in the form of a very short, very wise Mary Oliver poem and revealed the following: that being president was more fun than Harry Potter (!), that it was 35 years since she’d filmed Room with a View which makes me feel about 95 as I loved that film as a child. She talked about EM Forster becoming a member of the LL, and how he’d written Room with a View and Howards End in the years after that and so it is safe to say perhaps some of it was written there. And then, very movingly if you love Room with a View as much as I did, she said she’d asked Mr Beebe to come along tonight, and handed over to Simon Callow, who read from A Christmas Carol. I think hearing Simon Callow reading from a Christmas Carol should be mandatory for everyone in December. Sorry about the rubbish photos.
Afterwards I caught the train home and wrote down the Mary Oliver poem, which I have stuck up beside me as I write this. @thelondonlibrary has daily membership for £20 and weekly membership for £70 if you want to try it out. It is my favourite place in the whole world as I have often banged on about here and has utterly changed me as a writer. What a wonderful way to kick off December.

If the courses be departed from, the ends will change.
“Come in, -- come in! and know me better, man! I am the Ghost of Christmas Present. Look upon me! You have never seen the like of me before!” ― Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
MORE than half of people living in England’s most deprived areas are spending less on food and essentials amid the cost-of-living crisis, official figures suggest.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) have exposed divisions across the country in how people are being affected by soaring prices.
People living in England’s most deprived districts were almost twice as likely to report cutting down on food bills and other essentials.
One in 10 people living in the poorest areas said they had also fallen behind on their electricity or gas bills and more than three-fifths said they had struggled to meet the payments in the latest period in November.
Foodbank charity the Trussell Trust said more support was needed from the government to help the poorest get by in the months before benefits are increased in April.
“In the last six months, 320,000 people turned to Trussell Trust foodbanks for the first time and this number is likely to rise.”
As Dickens wrote in A Christmas Carol; “Men's courses will foreshadow certain ends, to which, if persevered in, they must lead, but if the courses be departed from, the ends will change.”

City Lounge: London (Book Seven, Chapter Fourteen: Tamika and Paul)
Chapter Fourteen: Tamika and Paul:
So there I am. I’m standing in what can be called an upper-class neighbourhood in the snow about to go into a nice-looking house with a group of my mates. I don’t know how what’s his face managed to get into a place like this. I couldn’t help but think that there was something shady going on. By the time I tried to think about what was going on, Kris had…
