11 september är årsdagen för en mängd historiska händelser, inte minst är det årsdagen för min och E:s första kyss. Det hände sig i Gamla Stan, efter att vi klivit i land från Blidösundsbåten, där vi precis sett Oddjob, den sista ljumna sommarkvällen 2016. Vi har firat jubileum hela veckan, känns det som, med presenter (jag fick Elin Unnes bok “I Odödliga Odlares Sällskap”), goda middagar och, igår, en favorit i repris. Inte riktigt på årsdagen, två dagar för sent, såg vi Christian Kjellvander på Blidösundsbåten. En fin konsert, men lite för trångt för att vi skulle kunna ge Kjellvander den uppmärksamhet han förtjänade. Andra akten tillbringade vi ute på däck, där vi såg Stockholms alla nattljus reflekteras i det svarta vattnet medan vi tryckte under varsin yllefilt och hörde favoriten “Poppies And Pionies” genom en högtalare. Christian Kjellvander- Hold Your Love Still (Tapete)

Christian Kjellvander is a Swedish songwriter and though he’s Scandinavian born and bred, he did spend some of his formative years in the Seattle, WA area which was long enough to let some of our country’s musical influences, namely country and gothic folk, seep into his music.

This is his first album since 2020’s About Love and Loving Again and while that one was more autobiographical, this our looks outward on a variety of topics (one song is called “Disgust for the Poor,” which he rails against wealth).

The first thing you’ll notice is his voice, a deep baritone that sounds like no other, strong and resonant and an instrument in itself. Opening cut “The Western Hemisphere” is more spare and lovely while there’s a full band on the epic, sweeping “Notes From The Drive Between Simat and Alcoi” and “Terns Took Turns” is a tender love song that includes brushed snares and gorgeous piano.

Elsewhere  the previously mentioned “Disgust for the Poor” is the most rocking thing on here (some well-placed howls, too) and the album closer,  “Dream 2066” delivers on all fronts, offering hope and beauty in the not-so-distant future.

You could do a lot worse than discover the true talents of this wildly talented/big hearted songwriter.
