Diversity in fashion means bringing in a diverse group of people who share clear distinctions such as age, skin color, race, orientation, and body type. People want to be heard, seen, and, most importantly, represented, which is what big fashion brands such as Chanel and Gucci are doing. For years modelling agencies and editors tended to look to one body type and skin colour. However over the years there have been a number of black model figures who have led the way in changing the industry such as Winnie Harlow, Jourdan Dunn and Amar Akway.

Dorothea Towels who was born in Texarkana and was the first top model to work in Paris after she was discovered by Christian Dior in 1949 becoming one of the most celebrated models in Europe. Christian Dior was the first to hire her. Working with other models from Finland, Sweden, England (and even Soviet Russia, extremely uncommon at the time) she helped Dior to internationalise the appeal of his fashions. Being one of the models chosen to help popularise Dior’s revolutionary “New Look”, she also learned the “Dior Swirl” and dazzled both him and his clients during the excessive runways.

Other models such as Sara Lou Harris, Donyale Luna and Mounia all made historical moments such as Sara Lou’s Harris becoming the first black model to appear in an advert campaign, Luna becoming first black model to appear on the cover of vogue and Mounia who became Ysls first ever black muse.

Iconic Naomi Campbell has been the face of fashion since the late 80s, she has always been an inspiration to many young women and has climbed her way to the top working with high brands such as Chanel , Vivienne Westwood, Thierry Mugler and many more. Her most iconic moments include closing Gianni Versaces last haute couture show in 1997 as a Versace bride.

Supermodel Donyale Luna was one of the worlds most beautiful women in the 1960s. Born Peggy Lee Ann Freeman in Detroit, Luna began modelling in 1965 and within months an article in Time magazine declared 1966 to be “the Luna year” she was the first black model to appear on the cover of British vogue, was a muse to legendary photographers like Richard Avedon and David Bailey.

Anna Bayle was one of the first Asian Supermodels who rose to prominence in the late 1970s. She became one of the highest paid models of her time. Currently Bayle serves as the beauty editor for online fashion publication look online.

Fashion Seasons

Every year, there are four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn/Fall, and Winter. Because the seasons intertwine effortlessly, the fashion industry produces two collections yearly.

The Spring/Summer collections come first from September to November, and then we get Fall/Winter collections from February to April.

This is a simple case of planning ahead so that the public knows what designers foresee on the streets for the relevant season. An excellent shopping tip is to buy winter clothes in the summer and vice-versa. You end up with massive savings because stocks must go.

New York Fashion Week (NYFW)

New York fashion week comes first. The biggest shows in New York are usually Brandon Maxwell, Carolina Herrera, Laquan Smith, Michael Kors and Tory Burch, to name a few.

London Fashion Week (LFW)

Next up is London fashion week. There are few shows in London, but huge brands tend to book international models quickly. Centre stage shows include Burberry, Erdem, Emilia Wickstead, Victoria Beckham and Vivienne Westwood.

Milan Fashion Week (MFW)

Now comes Milan fashion week. By this time, we are well and truly into the madness, and models are tired. The shows that attract the most attention include D&G, Dsquared2, Etro, Fendi, Prada and Philipp Plein.

Paris Fashion Week (PFW)

Finally, we end with Paris fashion week. Everyone is tired by this point and ready to go home. But how can you when shows like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Acne Studios, Miu Miu, Balenciaga, Hermes, Christian Dior, Saint Laurent, Valentino & Balmain are on?

Not to mention that a designer can move their show to a different destination. For example, in 2023, Versace showed their FW23 collection in Los Angeles instead of Milan.

What are some of your favorite belts from the shows?

I’ve noticed a pattern when making this list. It’s very metal-heavy. There a so many belts I love but these are the top ones I’ve coveted over the years. Alexander McQueen and Balmain always have great belts and I could probably compile their own lists by themselves. Thanks for asking and your patience while I did my research!

Astrology & Fashion; Aquarius

The main components in an individual’s chart to signify style is the Ascendant, Sun, Moon, and Venus. The Ascendant being the self, our identity, and appearance. The Sun being our lifestyle. Our general expression. The Moon being ourselves in emotional and vulnerable expressions (important component as we need to feel comfortable in what we wear; we self-identify with certain styles.) Venus being our aesthetic expression and is closely tied to our Sun sign’s expression.

AQUARIUS AESTHETICS

Inventive, unconventional, political, unique, trailblazing, a movement, metallics, silver, gunmetal, blues, steel blue, cool colours, white, fishnets, sheer tops, tank tops, boyfriend style, slogans, bandannas, low waist, relaxed fit, acid wash, ties, blazers, kaleidoscope, androgyny, long silhouettes.

HIGH FASHION

 When Aquarius expresses itself in fashion, we see style ahead of its time, ideas outside of the norm, and breaking constructs. Aquarian fashion tends to try to be different from everyone else, that is, when an Aquarius’ focus is fashion. To really get perspective on Aquarian fashion, we must look at the past and where we are now. The designers I’ve decided to focus on for Aquarian fashion influences are Christian Dior and Maria Grazia Chiuri.

 The founder and original creative director of his self-named brand, Christian Dior was considered ahead of his time. He brought hope and life back into the world during the time of post-wwii. Dior reintroduced feminine silhouettes and beauty to the world. For that, his designs and himself are remembered and continually drawn upon for inspiration. 

 Just looking at his Juno and Venus gowns which now remain in museums, it’s so easy to feel inspired and entranced by its beauty.

 Now looking to Christian Dior as a brand in modern day, we have Aquarian dominant Maria Grazia Chiuri as creative director. Chiuri’s designs still retain the authentic feminine quality Dior is known for, but she is now introducing a wider idea of what femininity is in fashion. There is a large focus on innovation and breaking social constructs, as we can see in her fall 2020 show, considerably masculine garments portrayed in a feminine way.

We can see a unique array of designs in Chiuri’s dresses as well; metallic materials, carefully printed tie dye kaleidoscopes, and iridescent details. Cool toned colours, blues, and greys really stand out in her collections as that airy mystique essence Aquarius has.

STREET FASHION

 People with Aquarian energies are really the type to not care what others think of them. They love to be eccentric and out there, especially when paired with other extroverted placements.  Many of the fashion icons of the early 2000s had this Aquarian energy; Paris Hilton and Britney Spears for example. Paris is known for her metallic and sparkly cocktail dresses, low waist pants, and Juicy Couture tracksuits. Paris is the last person to be afraid of pulling something off.

Britney Spears, another early 2000s icon, was often seen in very pop-star getups with low waist pants and slogan crop tops.

Though it varies from Aquarian man to Aquarian man, the Aquarius men that are fashion focused are also extremely self expressive and aim towards breaking social norms. They aren’t afraid to dabble in what is considered effeminate and even challenge binary constructs. Within the last few years, Harry Styles’ self expression has really shown in his style and he definitely hasn’t limited his wardrobe to what is classically considered “masculine.”

Axl Rose with an Aquarius Stellium is another example of Aquarius not giving a f*ck. His style was quite influential in the rock scene.
