Heading into the offseason and i thought it would be cool to delve into a different position group every month for the next several months ahead.
For this month of February i chose wide receivers and weâve had some good ones here since the Titans started in â99 including Nate Washington,Derrick Mason,,Drew Bennett,Justin Gage,Kenny Britt,Kendall Wright,Rishard Matthews,A.J. Brown, etc.
For the Titans first half decade in the league from 1999 through 2003 no other NFL team won more games than Tennessee and their main receiver during this time was Derrick Mason.
One of his best games that i remember happened during the AFC Championship win at Jacksonville in January of 2000 Mason had an 80 yard kickoff return for a TD that widened the Titans lead over the Jaguars and gave them extra momentum and the Titans ultimately defeated the Jags 33-14.
During his time with Tennessee Mason had 453 catches for 6114 yards and 37 TDs.
Mason had 182 punt returns for 1590 yards and 2 TDs
Mason also had 156 kick returns for 3496 yards and 1 TD
In 2003 Mason had 95 catches and then in 2004 he ended up having 96 catches but the Titans were in salary cap trouble and had to let go of some of their best players and in the coming years Derrick Mason,Samari Rolle and Steve McNair all ended up going to Baltimore.
Going back to year one 1999 the team had weapons on offensive.
The Titans had also drafted a receiver the year before and brought in free agents so in 1999 besides Mason the team had Kevin Dyson and also free agent receiver Yancey Thigpen.
The team also had veteran Chris Sanders as well.
One of the biggest mistakes the team ever made was letting Mason go because he still had a lot of years left and in the coming years only one receiver had as much or more talent and that receiver was Nate Washington.
Drew Bennett had been with the Titans since 2001 and did the best he could to help once Mason was gone.
Bennett played six years 2001 through 2006 with the Titans catching 273 passes for 4033 yards along with 25 TDs
With Bennett leaving the Titans brought in another receiver in free agency in 2007 Justin Gage and he filled in well playing four years from 2007 through 2010 catching 137 passes for 2050 yards and 12 TDs
The Titans have drafted other receivers including Kevin Dyson,Justin McCarreins,Tyrone Calico,Brandon Jones,Roydell Williams, etc.
Calico was drafted in the second round in 2003 and was shaping up to be a really good talented WR before an injury against Dallas derailed his career.
Justin McCareins actually played two stints with Tennessee
McCareins was drafted in the 4th round in 2001 by the Titans and played three seasons with the Titans then went to the Jets but came back to Tennessee for his last year in 2008.
Brandon Jones was drafted in the 3rd round in 2005 by the Titans and played from 2005 through 2008.
Roydell Williams was drafted by Tennessee in the 4th round in 2005
Williams played for the Titans for three seasons and one of his most clutch plays came in 2007 when he caught a 46 yard pass from Kerry Collins in the final minute of a comeback win against the Texans.
Williams catch enabled not only the Titans to come back but also helped kicker Rob Bironas make the game winning FG which was his eighth FG of the game and a new NFL record for most FG made in a game.
In 2009 with their first round pick the Titans drafted WR Kenny Britt and the year before drafted LaVelle Hawkins in fourth round.
In his rookie year Britt caught a game winning TD pass to beat the Arizona Cardinals.
In a 2010 game against Philly Britt ended up catching seven passes for 225 yards and 3 TDs and at the time that was the most yardage a WR ever gained against an Eagles defense.
An injury early in the 2011 season against Denver cost Britt the rest of that season and eventually he left a couple years later in free agency.
A WR that Tennessee acquired in free agency in 2009 ended up being one of the best receivers the Titans ever had his name was Nate Washington.
Washington ended up playing in Tennessee for six years catching 307 passes for 4591 yards and 28 TDs along with plenty of great memories as well.
In a game against Detroit in 2012 he had one of the most insane catches i have ever seen an over the shoulder catch over his opponent that went for a 71 yard TD
In a home game against Pittsburgh in 2014 Washington caught an 80 yard TD pass and the guy defending him never had a shot.
In 2012 the Titans drafted Kendall Wright in the first round and a year later drafted Justin Hunter in the second round.
In a 2013 game against the San Diego Chargers Hunter caught a 34 yard TD pass as time was expiring to beat the Chargers.
That same year in 2013 Wright caught 94 passes in what was a mostly run oriented offense.
In the coming years the Titans would draft Dorial Green Beckham,Tajae Sharpe and bring in Rishard Matthews in free agency.
However there was one WR the Titans drafted who would do big things for the offense A.J. Brown a 2019 2nd round pick.
Brown was so good he helped propel the Titans to being ranked the second best offense in the league in 2020.
The Titans GM Jon Robinson and A.J. Brown's agent were going to negotiate a new contract in the 2022 offseason but they hit a point where things fell apart.
So for the second time in the Titans short history they would be letting a good wide receiver they drafted hit free agency instead of paying him.
Brown was eventually traded to the Eagles on draft night 2023 and the Titans drafted another WR in the first round Treylon Burks.
Burks had some injury issues his first season but overall he looks like he could be a dominant receiver if he can stay healthy the sky is the limit.
Looking forward to what Burks can do in the future and it also wouldn't hurt to bring in some more weapons to free up Burks more in the passing game.
Burks has what it takes all he has to do is stay on the field.

After more than 40 years as an actor, Sheri Mann Stewart had finally taken the plunge to launch her own production company. A week after she wrapped shooting her first film for Mann Woman Productions, Atlanta went on pandemic lockdown.
Mann Stewart was suddenly left with a film on hold, an audition on hold, and the careers of her husband and two sons â all performers â on hold. Instead of ushering her first film â prophetically inspired by John Paul Sartreâs âNo Exitâ â through editing and post-production, she spends several hours each day on the phone trying to iron out issues with unemployment benefits that she has yet to receive.
âNothing like this has ever happened,â said Mann Stewart an Atlanta native who most recently appeared in Tyler Perryâs Netflix feature film âA Fall from Grace.â âI think, one way or another, our industry will be changed.â
COVID-19 left actress Sheri Mann Stewart with the first film from her production company on hold, an audition on hold, and the careers of her husband and two sons â all performers â also in flux. She has spent time working on other projects including a new YouTube series to support LGBTQIA youth who may not be in supportive environments.
Like many other industries, the film and TV business has been shut down since mid-March, with only a few exceptions such as late-night talk shows and virtual versions of âAmerican Idolâ and âThe Voice.â With plenty of content currently in the pipeline, streaming services and television networks have managed so far, but if production doesnât restart soon, viewers will face a major drought of new shows to watch this fall.
Pressure is building to get production started as soon as possible, but the natural intimacy of a typical set with makeup artists, camera operators, producers, actors and production assistants constantly crossing paths, makes creating proper protocols a serious challenge.
âPeople are anxious to get back to work,â said Mark Wofford, general manager at Atlanta-based Production Consultants & Equipment, which provides motion-picture rental equipment. âBut this has to be weighed against the need to make sure everyone is safe. Itâs going to be a real balancing act.â
Georgia has become a major player in Hollywood production, courtesy of generous tax credits to film and TV production companies passed in 2008. Itâs now the third-largest state for such content after California and New York. As the only state with no cap on its credits, Georgia has drawn big-budget films such as âBlack Pantherâ and âThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire.â
Despite Hollywoodâs liberal leanings â some in the industry called for boycotts after Georgiaâs 2016 religious liberty bill and 2019 heartbeat abortion bill â the Republican-led state legislature and three Republican governors have consistently embraced the tax credit system. At the recent Georgia Film Day on March 11, Gov. Brian Kemp spoke before 200 industry supporters in the state Capitol atrium, extolling the $2.9 billion in direct investment and 50,000-plus jobs the business brought into the state last fiscal year. Weeks later, Kemp would issue a statewide shelter-in-place order.
In May, the Georgia Film Office released a set of nonbinding best practices for film and television productions to consider during the pandemic. The guidelines included holding remote auditions and virtual location scouting as well as reducing the number of extras used on set and placing clear barriers between actors to be removed just before the director yells âAction!â
Local studios are preparing to reopen this summer as they await multiple unions to accept unified protocols. Earlier this month, a task force composed of the various unions and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, sent approved health and safety guidelines to governors in California and New York with plans for final protocols to follow soon. âThis document is an initial set of principles and guidelines that we all agree form a relevant and realistic first step to protecting cast and crew in the reopening of the entertainment and media industry in its two largest markets,â said a joint statement from unions, including the Teamsters, the Directors Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA. Face masks for live audiences, staggered mealtimes with no buffet-style setups, and daily screenings for COVID-19 along with a designated COVID-19 compliance officer, were among the recommended guidelines.
Studios have already begun to make big investments in COVID-19 friendly infrastructure. Since March, two of the largest studios in the metro area â Pinewood Studios in Fayetteville and Blackhall Studios in Atlanta â have each invested more than $1 million to retrofit their studios. One of the biggest costs: improving the HVAC systems on their sound stages and offices so they are comparable to that of hospitals in order to reduce the chances of airborne transmission of viruses. Major film and television productions can easily have hundreds of staff members working in tight indoor quarters, creating the kind of environment that public health officials have noted can increase the spread of COVID-19.
âIâve had to become an expert in viral containment,â said Ryan Millsap, owner of Blackhall Studios. âUntil March, I hadnât given it a second thought. This is a big moment in our generation where disease has come to the forefront.â
Atlanta-based makeup artist Tracy Ewell has seen a virus or cold spread like fire on almost every production on which she has worked. She started toting a personal air filter to set up in the trailers and tents where she and her team spend hours getting actors camera ready. âI am paid to be hygienic,â Ewell said. âI take full responsibility for my actorâs condition, but masks donât work in my world.â
Ewell, who has worked as a department head on productions for Marvel and the Netflix drama âOzark,â is not afraid of returning to set, but she knows that is a decision everyone will have to make for themselves. The initial industry guidelines for makeup artists included providing more time to allow for safety measures to be followed, but additional protocols need to be established before that kind of work can continue. âI would be comfortable having fewer people on set in my department if I knew they were going to have the time,â Ewell said. But more time means more money, and studios now have to make big investments at a time when theyâve posted big losses.
Just before the pandemic shut down productions nationwide, HBO finished its upcoming J.J. Abrams drama, âLovecraft Country,â and Paramount wrapped Chris Pratt military science fiction movie âThe Tomorrow Warâ at Blackhall. Millsap was about to sign with two other major studios for new productions when COVID-19 put the kibosh on that.
Since then, Millsap has generated zero revenue, shedding more than $1 million a month while keeping his 12 full-time employees on payroll. He said he has had enough money in the bank to keep his studio afloat but would be challenged if shows didnât begin shooting by the fourth quarter. If all goes well, two major studios will begin pre-production at Blackhall in July with potential full-blown production by August or September, he said.
Frank Patterson, the head of Pinewood Atlanta Studios, said they have had to study every aspect of their business, from more limited security access to more sequestered work pods, dividing the studio into zones. They also hired a medical testing company, BioIQ, to handle the anticipated flood of COVID-19 tests they plan to use on a daily basis. âSome days, weâll have 6,000 people on the lot,â he said.
The past couple of months have been âoverwhelmingly stressful because Iâm working with people Iâve known for decades,â Patterson added. âThese are people I grew up within the industry. We have to make certain nobody gets sick. At the same time, these are friends who havenât worked for months and have families to feed. We need to get this done now.â
Atlanta-based Tyler Perry Studios was the first in the country to announce detailed plans to shoot two of his BET television series in July. Perry has some advantages most other studios do not. He owns 330 acres of a former Army base and has at least 80 residences on the property which will enable him to more easily isolate crew and actors. He writes and directs his own TV series in a way that will enable him to finish shooting an entire season in less than three weeks. He has developed protocols to test everybody multiple times with contingencies in case anybody gets COVID-19. He has scaled back on-site crew and extras and is using his largest sound stage as a cafeteria with proper social distancing.
âItâs an enormous undertaking and an enormous cost to the budget,â Perry told Variety last month.
Mann Stewart had just been called for an audition for a Perry television production before the studio closed. She is unsure if that opportunity still stands but has continued with other auditions, including a recent commercial audition that came through in late May. Still, it is never far from her mind how so many aspects of the industry must change.
While writing a script for a play, she found herself debating if she really needed the characters to have a physical interaction.
âI try not to let it impact me and say I can fix it later butâŠ,â said Mann Stewart, her thought left trailing.
Some studios are already pondering creative solutions to those kinds of concerns. As soon as the pandemic hit, executives at Atlanta-based Crazy Legs Productions created an advisory council of five medical experts to help them draw up 25 pages of safety guidelines. Last month, they began compiling a database of local actors who are in relationships with other actors. âWe can cast a husband and wife as a husband and wife,â said Scott Thigpen, chief operating officer. âItâs a way to mitigate risk.â They are also considering using family members as extras.
The company, which launched in 2006 and now has 34 salaried employees, produces docuseries for TLC such as âFamily by the Tonâ and crime shows for ID, like âDead Silent. â They also began shooting films for the first time this year.
Industry insiders are confident productions in Georgia will bounce back quickly and fill sound stages as a backlog of content gets filled.
After months spent keeping their skills sharp and in some cases, auditioning via Zoom, actors across metro Atlanta are ready to get back to work, said Clayton Landey, president of SAG-AFTRA Atlanta local. He hopes summer marks that return but said the proper precautions are needed. Landey, a 48-year industry veteran, recalled a scene years ago when his character was being hit with a bullet. Everyone else on the set was standing behind safety glass. âI feel a little like that now,â Landey said. âI am interested to see what is going to be the new normal in terms of safety on set.â
The pandemic ended a theater run for Landey and stalled a film, which no longer has a date to begin production, but he has spent the past three months staying connected to other actors through virtual chats and meetups. Landey worries about the actors who may be suffering mentally while isolated from the career that allows them to channel their emotions into their work. Though acting is a field that prepares you for career ups and downs, this is unlike anything they have seen before, he said.
âNothing in our industry touches what we are going through now. Typically when there are times of stress or hard times in the general population, we are working like crazy because entertainment is what gets you through the day,â Landey said. âThis time, it is slapping us all.â

Notes taken during Super Bowl XXX
PREGAME
This is another Channel 4 joint. Gary Imlach, Marv Levy, and Drew Pearson are the UK commentators.
Cowboys to receive the kickoff.
NBC had this game in the United States. Dick Enberg on PBP. Paul Maguire is the color commentator. Phil Simms is in the booth too, it seems.
FIRST QUARTER
First play is a pass to Jay Novacek underneath. Broken up by Carnell Lake.
Second down, intermediate pass to Michael Irvin. 20 yards, out to midfield. Irvin motioning that he couldn't see the ball because he was looking into the sun. Caught it anyway.
Michael Irvin canât see.
Deion Sanders in at WR for the Cowboys now, so of course they hand the ball to Emmitt Smith. 23 yard run, to the Pittsburgh 28.
Third and long, jet sweep to Kevin Williams. Enberg calls it a reverse. (Grrrrr.) He's stuffed and the Cowboys will attempt a 42 yard field goal. Chris Boniol. Yep, got it. 3-0 Dallas, less than three minutes into the game.
NBC graphic: Team scoring first has won 21 of 29 Super Bowls.
Steelers heading into the sun in the first quarter. First play is a handoff to Erric Pegram for two yards.
Kordell Stewart in for Pittsburgh as a slot receiver. 1995 appears to have been the year of the multi-position star.
Steelers go five-wide on third down. Enberg says it's a revolutionary formation from the Steelers this year. That seems a bit overly effusive, no? I feel like run and shoot teams like the Falcons, Oilers, and Denver Gold would have gone five-wide with some regularity.
O'Donnell throws underneath on third and long. Receiver tackled immediately and it's a three-and-out.
Imlach asks Marv Levy how the Steelers should deal with the great Dallas offensive line. I love Marv Levy dearly - he's one of my favorite sports people of all time - but I think we've established that Marv doesn't have a bunch of answers for the Cowboys in the Super Bowl.
NBC graphic: Cowboys offensive line averages 333 pounds per person.
Maguire: Steelers say Cowboys' offensive strength is their run game. Cowboys say Cowboys' offensive strength is their pass game.
Aikman goes deeeeep on a post pattern to Deion Sanders. Perfect throw. Sanders makes the grab. 47 yard gain, inside the Pittsburgh 20.
Maguire: Aikman tells a story about practice, when he threw a pass to Deion Sanders as far and as hard as he can throw it. He was certain he'd overthrown Sanders, but when he went back and watched the film, Deion actually had to slow down to catch the pass.
Aikman to Novacek inside the 5. First and goal from the 3.
Next play, play fake to Smith, toss to a wide open Novacek. Easy score. 10-0 Dallas in the first quarter. Replay shows it was pretty clearly an illegal pick to clear space for Novacek.
Drew Pearson: Expect Steelers to pass more - need to open things up for the run game.
Levy: Novacek hid behind his line on the touchdown pass, lined up as a wingback right and crossed behind the line, and the Steelers lost track of him.
Maguire: This is a brand new field since the Fiesta Bowl. Players expected it to be tight, but they're slipping all over the place. Field isn't tight.
Steelers go no-huddle after a first down. Cowboys only have nine players on the field and have to call a timeout.
NBC promo: Next weekend, Gulliver's Travels starring Ted Danson!
Byron "Bam" "Choo Choo" Morris into the backfield for Pittsburgh. CHOO CHOO!!! Up the middle for six.
Third down, a pitch to Kordell Stewart. Short by a half-yard. What a weird call - why not just snap it directly to him, since he's a quarterback and stuff.
Steelers going for it on fourth and less than a yard. Kordell Stewart lines up under center and Neil O'Donnell lines up as a wide receiver. Again, weird. Everybody in the stadium knows you're not passing the ball to Neil O'Donnell. Why play with 10 offensive players? Anyway, it works. QB sneak.
Enberg: Bill Cowher is the youngest coach ever to take a team to the Super Bowl. 38 years old.
Third and 8, O'Donnell stands in and fires it to Andre Hastings. He has plenty of time. First down.
They go no-huddle again and the shotgun snap is about five feet over O'Donnell's head. Loss of 13.
Current drive: 11 plays, 24 yards, 5:07 and counting. 11 plays for 24 yards!
Last play of the quarter, O'Donnell to Corey Holliday. He's a rookie who had zero receptions in the regular season and, over the course of his career, had a total of one regular season catch.
First quarter ends. Dallas 10, Pittsburgh 0.
SECOND QUARTER
3rd and 13, O'Donnell rolls and is nearly picked off by Larry Brown. It's decision time on 4th and 13 from the Dallas 39. They'll punt. There are no good choices here, only choices that are less bad than others. Predictably, Rohn Stark blasts it through the end zone for a 19 yard net.
Enberg: Jay Novacek's mom collected aluminum cans all year so she could pay her own way to see her son in the Super Bowl. She didn't want him to have to pay for her.
Four passes in a row to Novacek. His mom's getting her money's worth.
Second and 10, Aikman to Irvin into Steelers territory for a first down.
Maguire: Emmitt Smith told his linemen that when they block, he doesn't want to see their stomachs. Just keep blocking straight ahead and Emmitt will find the hole.
Simms: Steelers are getting no pressure at all on Aikman.
Third and 5, Aikman is confused by the play call. Looks at the sideline quizzically, figures it out, and completes a pass to Moose Johnston for four and a half. It's a measurement, but it's almost certainly going to be short. He is. It's about eight inches short. Barry Switzer will go for it.
Moose Johnston gets it easily. Everybody expected Emmitt, Switzer crossed them up.
Aikman looks deep and Michael Irvin grabs it as he steps into the end zone. Offensive pass interference. He grabbed Carnell Lake on the way past him.
So what do the Cowboys do? They throw the ball to Jay Novacek. He's having another big Super Bowl. 19 yard gain.
Cowboy drive stalls there and Chris Boniol comes on for a 35 yard field goal attempt. Right down the middle. Three possessions, three scores for Dallas. 13-0, mid-second quarter.
During commercial break, Channel 4 plays a bit of the Navajo language broadcast of the game. Neat.
Drew Pearson: Players are probably using wrong shoes for this surface, there are a lot of slips. If it were me, I'd use Astroturf shoes because the ground is hard under the grass.
O'Donnell throws behind Yancey Thigpen on first down. Nearly picked off..
Pittsburgh goes three and out. Rohn Stark punts. While the ball is rolling, a Steeler comes from out of nowhere and clobbers a Cowboy in the back, sending him flying into the ball. The Steelers recover, but it's (correctly) ruled Dallas ball. That was weird. Pittsburgh players are flipping out, but c'mon. That was never your ball.
Levy says the Dallas player should have been nowhere near that ball, regardless of whether he was shoved.
Pearson: Steelers are confused. Don't know whether they want to run the ball or throw it. Dallas defense is dominating at the line of scrimmage and O'Donnell isn't hitting passes.
Greg Lloyd hits Emmitt Smith in the knee on a tackle on second down. It wasn't intentional. Emmitt is limping a bit.
Third and 10, Chris Oldham knocks down a pass intended for Irvin, who was behind the defense. Cowboys three and out for the first time.
Steelers take over at their 46. First down, O'Donnell misses an open receiver. Second down, it's a coverage sack. Charles Haley got him for a loss of 10. Third and 20, O'Donnell to Hastings for 19 yards. Maguire emphatically says they have to go for this. This is four-down territory, period.
A replay shows Deion Sanders completely whiffed on an attempted tackle on the third down play.
Fourth and inches, Kordell Stewart has no trouble picking up the first down on a QB sneak.
Second and 10, CHOO CHOO! Bam Morris blows through the line for around 13 yards. We hit the two-minute warning with the Steelers at the Dallas 30.
Third and 7, O'Donnell to Mills for six and a half yards. It's an absolutely horrible spot and the refs give Pittsburgh a free first down.
Enberg begins to talk about NBC coverage of this game on the World Wide Web, but Channel 4 cuts away mid-sentence. That was the first internet reference I've seen during a Super Bowl.
Third and long, O'Donnell finds Mills near the 5. Probably should have been overthrown, but it was a great catch. Steelers call timeout with 0:17 left in the half. They have no more timeouts. If they don't kick here, they need to throw into the end zone.
And they do exactly that. O'Donnell zips it through some traffic to Yancey Thigpen, who beat Deion Sanders. Deion shoved him into the path of the ball. Suddenly, despite the Cowboys' dominance, it's only 13-7. 13 seconds left - you'd think Pittsburgh squibs the kickoff and Dallas takes a knee on first down.
Cowboys run a reverse on the kick return. They get it to their 37.
Yep, Aikman takes a knee. 13-7 at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
Kickoff goes out of bounds. Steelers get it at their own 40 yard line.
CHOO CHOO! Bam Morris blows through tacklers like a freight train. 15 yard run gets the Steelers to the Cowboys' 35.
Steelers go five-wide on third and 9. Dallas blitzes and O'Donnell has to throw too quickly. Incomplete pass, so inexplicably they'll punt from the Dallas 33. Rohn Stark kicks it into the end zone because that's what happens when you punt from the opponent's 33.
Pearson: Steelers didn't really lose momentum on that drive. Didn't score, but they moved the ball.
Second and 11 for the Cowboys, the Steelers try to cover Michael Irvin underneath with a linebacker. Predictably, this doesn't work and Dallas gets 15.
Cowboys don't do much - just the one first down to Irvin - and they punt.
Steelers run on first down. Maguire says he cannot understand why the Steelers aren't running four and five wide receivers.
Second down, Kordell Stewart takes a handoff on a run/pass option. Doesn't have his receiver open, pulls the ball down and jets down the sideline for 12.
Maguire: Steelers are throwing plays away. I don't even know why they're running some of these plays. (Runs up the middle on first down, in particular)
Third and ten, Pittsburgh goes four-wide, Neil O'Donnell has plenty of time, and throws the ball right to a wide-open Larry Brown. He hit Brown right in the numbers. The problem is that Brown is a cornerback for the Cowboys. Brown returns it inside the Steelers' 20. First turnover of the game.
First play of the Dallas drive, Aikman to Irvin on the sideline. Steps out of bounds at the 2.
One play later, Emmitt Smith powers it into the end zone. Or so the officials say. He's clearly down before the ball crosses the goal line. Whatever. It's a touchdown. 20-7 Cowboys, middle of the third quarter.
Levy: Not sure the interception was a gamebreaker, but it's going to come down to how the Steelers respond. And the fact that they got called for a penalty on the kickoff return isn't a great sign.
Levy thinks Smith got into the end zone, for what it's worth. I disagree, but I respect Marv.
Pearson: I'm not saying the Steelers need to abandon their (run-heavy) gameplan, but they need to throw the ball a bit to open up space in the Dallas defense.
Maguire is still baffled by the Steeler offense after they hand the ball to Choo Choo Morris on 2nd and 13. They pick up the first down on third and long when Andre Hastings breaks a tackle.
Third and short, O'Donnell pitches the ball way the heck backwards to Erric Pegram. I really hate the call - going backwards to go forwards when you need a yard and a half - but he cuts it back for a first down.
Incredible catch by Ernie Mills out near midfield. He was wide open and had to dive with his arms fully extended to get to the ball. Miserable throw.
Fourth and yard and a half near midfield. 2:00 or so left in the third. Steelers go for it, run Choo Choo into the teeth of the defense, and he doesn't have a chance. Cowboys take over on downs, up 13 with 1:26 left in the third quarter.
...and they do nothing with the ball. Cowboys will boot it away after Rod Woodson makes a nice break on a third down pass to Michael Irvin. John Jett kicks it through the end zone.
Steelers pick up 12 on a first down pass to Mills. Deion Sanders, in coverage, tells his teammates after the play that was his fault, he should have done better. Third quarter ends, still 20-7 Dallas.
Pearson: Very surprised Cowher went for it on the fourth and one, particularly at midfield. Would have run a lead blocker.
FOURTH QUARTER
First play of the quarter, Choo Choo shows his nimble footwork. Dances to midfield.
One play later, Ernie Mills is nearly decapitated by Scott Case on a catch over the middle. He maybe drops the pass, maybe fumbles, but it's called a fumble. Tight end Mark Bruener recovers. The officials didn't seem to know what to do. It took them forever to make that call.
Later in the drive, O'Donnell scrambles, rolls right and finds Mills. Nearly picked by Larry Brown. He easily could have had three picks by now.
Third and short, O'Donnell to Thigpen now. Pittsburgh is moving the ball. A touchdown here and it's anybody's game. 12:00 and counting on the clock.
Steelers have to burn a timeout before a crucial third down play. That hurts.
What hurts worse is a sack by Charles Haley on that third down. Knocks Pittsburgh almost out of field goal range.
Norm Johnson attempts and makes a 46-yard field goal on a field with shaky footing. Nice kick. It's now 20-10 Cowboys. Steelers still alive.
Onside kick! Steelers recover! They've got it at midfield and coach Bill Cowher is PUMPED.
Enberg: 12th onside kick in Super Bowl history. Fourth successful one.
Steelers on fire now. Two great catches on the first two plays and they're inside the Dallas 30.
Third play of the drive, O'Donnell to Mills near the Dallas 20. Larry Brown hits Mills in the back and the receiver's knee twists. Mills is injured and the furious Steelers comeback has to take a break.
Steelers get inside the Dallas 20 on a punishing Bam Morris run up the middle.
O'Donnell to Thigpen, and the Steelers have reached the Dallas 5. Thigpen is decked by linebacker Dixon Edwards, but holds on.
First down, Morris to the 2. Second down, Morris to about the six inch line. He got royally boned on that call. He was in the end zone.
There's no such controversy on third down as Morris goes untouched around right end. He walks into the end zone. Suddenly it's a three-point ballgame. 20-17, mid-fourth quarter. (6:36 to be exact.)
Kevin Williams drops the kickoff and only gets out to the 12. Steelers fans in the stadium are going crazy.
NBC graphic: Cowboys have a total of 41 yards on their last five drives. They get 22 yards on the first play of this drive.
Second down, linebacker Levon Kirkland blitzes and runs into Aikman. Didn't tackle him, but blasted him backwards for an eight yard loss. Now it's 3rd and 17.
Incomplete pass on third down, Kevin Williams wants pass interference, the officials (correctly) say nope. John Jett will punt. The Steelers have 4:15 to get into position for a game-tying field goal. Plenty of time.
First down, Andre Hastings drops an easy one. He was wide open downfield.
Second down, O'Donnell hits a wide-open Larry Brown in the numbers again. Still a problem: Brown still plays for the other team. He returns it to the Steelers' 6. Looked like O'Donnell expected his receiver to break outside and he didn't.
Replay shows that if O'Donnell had thrown downfield, his receiver was so wide open that could have almost walked into the end zone. That's (probably) the ballgame.
Yep, it's the ballgame. Emmitt gets into the end zone on second and goal. 27-17 Dallas. That's Smith's 18th career postseason touchdown, tying Thurman Thomas for most all-time.
The Steelers need 10 points in 3:43. Not impossible, but certainly improbable.
First down, Andre Hastings fights for an extra five yards and stays in bounds instead of getting out and stopping the clock. Next play, complete to Corey Holliday. Holliday now has more catches in this game than he had in all of the regular season games he ever played combined.
Enberg: O'Donnell is #1 all-time in least interceptions thrown. Presumably this is in terms of INT%.
Steelers near the Dallas 40 as we hit the two-minute warning. Again, this comeback isn't impossible, but it's unlikely.
Maguire says he thinks Deion Sanders might take a year off from baseball if the Cowboys win this game. They did and he did.
Third down, Andre Hastings drops another pass. O'Donnell is limping after Cowboys DL Chad Hennings lands on him.
John L. Williams, one of the best receiving backs of his era drops a pass on fourth down. The ball was behind him, but he probably should have had it. Cowboys get the ball on downs.
Larry Brown named MVP. Was a 12th round pick in the draft, 320th player picked.
Aikman takes a few knees and the game ticks away.
Simms: The Steelers had many, many chances to win this game.
0:13 left, fourth down, and Dallas will punt because they have to do something. Dallas downs it with 0:03 left. The Steelers need 10 points in three seconds. Spoiler alert: They don't do it.
12th consecutive Super Bowl win for the NFC. (XIX-XXX)
Steelers lining up to throw deep on the final play. Why not, I guess. Brock Marion picks it off, not that it matters.
Final score: Dallas 27, Pittsburgh 17.
POSTGAME
Enberg: Pete Rozelle said his favorite Super Bowl was the 35-31 Steelers-Cowboys game in Super Bowl XIII. (For what it's worth, I agree and also have that game atop my list, at least through the first XXX Super Bowls.)
Marv Levy: Games in which a team has turnover differential at least +2, they win 94% of the time.
Imlach to Pearson: Are the Cowboys a legitimate Team of the 90s? Pearson: Yes, they're absolutely the Team of the 90s.
I think this is the first trophy presentation to happen on the field.
Jerry Jones: I want to tell all Steelers fans, and their owners and coaches, what a great team you have and how hard they fought tonight.
Jones: As talented as our players are, they're even more mentally tough than that.
Jones: Of my three Super Bowl wins as an owner, this is the sweetest. This was the closest game of the three.
Greg Gumbel to Switzer: Before the game, you told me whether you win or lose, you're not concerned what people think about you. Is that still true? Switzer: Yes, still true. I care about my family, and these guys are who I want to be with. The Dallas Cowboys.

A scholarship endowment paying tribute to the lives of three University of Mississippi students has grown to more than $335,000, and three new recipients of the scholarship say they feel honored to represent the men for whom the endowment is named.
Continuing gifts from the Kappa Alpha fraternity have expanded the Charles Walker Kelly, Samuel Clayton Kelly and Bryant Mason Wilbanks Memorial Scholarship Endowment that pays tribute to the lives of lifelong friends tragically killed in a 2011 car accident. Kappa Alpha fraternity recently contributed an additional $60,000 to the endowment and $15,000 for this yearâs scholarship awards.Â
All natives of Madison, the friends graduated together from Madison Central High School, attended Broadmoor Baptist Church, enrolled at Ole Miss and pledged the same fraternity. Their legacies are kept alive by fellow KA brothers who receive scholarship awards.
This yearâs recipients are Michael Deauville of San Jose, California, Dillon Pitts of Pearl and Kyle Thigpen of Jackson.
âOne of the biggest fears of a parent who has lost a child is that the child will be forgotten,â said Ken Wilbanks, father of Mason Wilbanks. âThanks to the generosity and support of KA and the Ole Miss community, our sonsâ legacies will continue on the Ole Miss campus long after we are gone.
âIt is truly humbling and such an honor to be able to present these three scholarships annually to active KA members in memory of Mason, Sam Clayton and Walker. I know our boys are smiling, knowing they are continuing to help those in the fraternity they loved so much at the university they loved so dearly.â
Alumni advisers of the KA Alpha Upsilon Chapter and UMâs Scholarship Committee work together to select recipients. The award is based on a number of criteria, including financial need, leadership and academic performance.
Deauville, a sophomore biology major with a minor in chemistry who hopes to attend medical school, said the scholarship will enable him to have the resources he needs to pursue his goals.
âFrom the bottom of my heart, I am incredibly blessed and grateful for this recognition and scholarship,â Deauville said. âIt is nothing short of an honor. Knowing that I am continuing the legacy of the three men is a very good feeling, and I aspire to be everything that they were.
âI am humbled by this recognition, and while I believe that there were many other deserving men, I will vow to continue their legacy in all that I do.â
At the recent Kappa Alpha awards banquet, Deauville spent time with Sam and Kim Kelly, parents of Sam Clayton Kelly.
âThey opened their arms to me, and after a few short minutes I felt I had known them my entire life,â he recalled. âMrs. Kelly even noted that I too am now a part of her family.
âI just want to thank them, as well as the other two families, for their enduring support of KA. I am honored to call them friends. I know they will all be a part of its family, and the chapter is better for that relationship.â
Pitts, a junior marketing and corporate relations major with a minor in manufacturing engineering, said the scholarship will help him pursue his goal to attend law school.
âReceiving this scholarship is an honor â not only to myself, but an honor that I get to represent three amazing young men who were members of our chapter,â Pitts said. âTo me, being a part of KA has opened numerous doors. I have been blessed to grow and make many lifelong connections and I owe it all to being a part of KA.â
Thigpen, a junior accounting major who plans to work for an accounting firm after graduation, said the scholarship will help him offset tuition costs as he pursues his degree.
âThe Kelly, Kelly (and) Wilbanks Scholarship is an awesome way to remember the lives of our three brothers who were lost,â Thigpen said. âTheir story has led me to think about the relationships Iâve built throughout my short time at Ole Miss, and Iâve come to realize how great of an impact the ones I love have had on my life.
âMason, Sam Clayton and Walker continue to impact lives every day, and itâs awesome to know that they will continue to do so for years to come.â
Chapter adviser Trey Horne, of Oxford, has been instrumental in growing the endowment.
âMason, Sam Clayton and Walker were strong men of character who loved God and their families,â he said. âThrough this scholarship endowment, their legacies will live on by providing three men of Kappa Alpha Order scholarships each year.
âAs new classes enter Ole Miss, this endowment will remind these men that the lives that Mason, Sam Clayton and Walker lived are worthy to be followed.â
Sandra Guest, vice president of the UM Foundation, said sheâs heartened by KAâs generosity.
âBy memorializing its members through scholarships, Kappa Alpha has set an outstanding example for other student organizations to follow,â she said. âI commend Mr. Horne for his leadership efforts to sustain the momentum of this initiative over the last four years and to the chapter for working hard to keep the spirit of their lost brothers alive.
âKA has turned a tragic situation into a lasting tribute, ensuring the legacy of Mason, Sam Clayton and Walker will forever remain at Ole Miss.â
The endowment is open to gifts from individuals and organizations. To contribute, send checks with the Kelly, Kelly and Wilbanks Scholarship noted to the University of Mississippi Foundation, 406 University Avenue, Oxford, MS 38655; contact Sandra Guest at 662-915-5208 or [email protected]; or visit http://ift.tt/130bR4T.
