Behind the Shadow

"Behind The Shadow" is a South Korean romantic drama that depicts love and friendship in the Joseon era. The story revolves around three childhood friends, Yunho (Ren/Choi Min-ki), Jae-woon (Park Sang-nam), and Seol (Hong Seung-hee), who have a strong bond since childhood.

   Baş rollerini Mr. Queen’nin başarılı oyuncusu Shin Hye-Sun ile INFINITE müzik grubunun üyesi Kim Myung-Soo‘nun paylaştığı fantastik bir diziydi. Kötü değildi ama ortalamanın üstüne çıkamamış bir dizi olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Konusu ilginç, oyuncuları oldukça başarılıydı. Buna rağmen bir noktada tıkandığını düşünüyorum.

Biraz bahsedelim; Lee Yeon-Seo (Shin Hye-Sun), üç yıl önce geçirdiği trafik kazasında anne- babasını ve görme yetisini kaybetmiş bir baş balerindir. Ailesinin kurucusu olduğu Fantasia bale-tiyatro şirketinin varisidir. Geçirdiği kaza sonrasında şirket ile ilgili bütün her şeyi halası ve eniştesi yönetmektedir. Yeon-Seo ise bütün zamanını hizmetçilere ve yardımcılarına eziyet ederek geçirir. Hayata karşı sert ve isyankar davranışlar sergiler, kibirli ve taş kalplidir.

Kim Dan (Kim Myung-Soo) ise görevi ölen hayvanları cennete göndermek olan bir melektir. Artık yer yüzündeki görevi sona ermek üzeredir ve son bir görev verilir. Görevini tamamladığında cennete yükselecektir. Birtakım talihsizlikler sonucunda son görevi bir insanın aşkı bulmasına yardım etmek olarak belirlenir. Ve bu insan Yeon-Seo’dur. Bu görev için Dan’a bir insan bedeni verilir ve görevi başarabilmesi için 100 günü vardır. Görevini başarırsa cennete gidecek, başaramaz ise yok olacaktır.

Fantastik yönü açısından kabul edilebilir bir dizi olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Klişeler yine yok değildi burada da birçoğuna yer vermişlerdi. Özünde çok rahatsız etmediler ama dizi bir süre sonra çok sıkıcı bir hal almaya başladı. Finale doğru izleyiciyi boğmaya başladı.

Shin Hye-Sun, Mr. Queen dizisinin yıldızı, oyunculuk anlamında şapka çıkarttığım kadın oyunculardan biri. Minyon görüntüsünün arkasında rolü gereği o buz gibi rolü hakkıyla oynamıştı. Sert, komik, üzgün, eğlenceli bütün duyguları yansıtabilen bir oyuncu kendisi. Diziye başlama nedenimde aslında Hye-Sun oldu ve beni şaşırtmadı. Ayrıca oynadığı güçlü, net kadın rolünü de ayrıca beğendim. Erkek oyuncuyu daha önce “One More Time” dizisinde izlemiştim. Şarkıcı olarak tanışmak nasip olmadı. Dizisi o kadar sinir bozucuydu ki, aklımda hiç kalmamıştı. Burada onu da oldukça beğendim.

Genel olarak çekim mekanlarını çok beğendim. OST’lerini ayrıca başarılı buldum. Görsel olarak izleyiciyi doyuran bir yönü vardı. Sonu biraz sakız gibi uzadı, garip bulduğum anlam veremediğim noktalar da vardı. Özellikle tanrı ile meleklerin mektuplaşma mantığı, rapor yazıları tuhaf olmuştu. Hele özellikle finalde tanrının cevap yazması konuya son noktayı koydu.

Sonuç olarak, çok da kafa yormayan, çerezlik bir dizi. İzlenir mi, izlenebilir.

What I truly adore about this sequence is that Choi Yeon-gyo had not noticed the "poor" scent of the Kim family until her husband pointed it out in an earlier scene and she only picks it up because she was told about it.

But her feet are up on the back of the car seat right by Kim Ki-taek's face. All the same he is shamed into believing the bad smell is from himself. Even with her feet exposed and right in Ki-taek's face, she does not elicit repulsion. Literally her shit doesn't stink.

The scene, using an olfactory sense that cannot be translated in a visual medium, displays that the perception of undesirable poverty traits are a learned trait and not inherent.

Parasite is a movie so dense with symbolism for the class struggle and I adore how Bong Joon-ho uses a version of that symbolism in-universe to show that learned behavior being transferred from person to person. Choi Yeon-gyo is actually polite and though she is ignorant of the class divide between her family and the Kim family she does not actively harbour prejudice. But she picks up that prejudice from her husband and then unintentionally she passes it on to Kim Ki-taek who internalizes it and begins to perceive himself as lesser than the rich family.

Of course this is all while Yeon-gyo speaks about how the rain was a blessing. The same rain that is causing Ki-taek's insecurity and resentment in this scene.

The narrative uses elevation as a symbolism and it is important to note that Ki-taek does actually have a scent to him during this scene. There was a massive downpour the previous night and the Kim family who live in a sub-basement experienced a flood which had them wading through sewage water. Their literal elevation did create a "poor stink" that exists within the text of the scene as well as the subtext.

This same impact is felt when the Kim family look down upon Moon-kwang and Geun-sae, who should be allies in their class struggle but they turn against one another to fight for the resources of the Park family. Ki-taek's intolerance is externalized against those who are on his level and both Ki-taek and Geun-sae are shown to be reverent towards the Park family patriarch while hostile towards one another, which leads to the movie's dark conclusion for both families.

Parasite does such a phenomenal job about how class systems breed resentment aimed inward and how that learned shame and the desperation that poverty inflicts upon those in its thrall can lead to a lack of community support and cooperation.

The movie is a tragedy that could so easily have been avoided had the families have offered aid, understanding and support. Instead of warring to feed on crumbs from a richer family that they literally came to worship.

REVIEW: 

Gil Boksoon is one of the top killers at an 'assassin agency' in Korea. She tries to balance her murder contracts with raising her rebellious teenage daughter. Whilst the action sequences are reminiscent of John Wick there is enough interaction between mother and daughter to engage the audience and set this aside from just being a capricious action film. There are suitable references between Gil's childhood and her teen daughter Jaeyoung to see that the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. 

There are great action sequences such as the initial confrontation on Seoul’s Dongha Bridge and the Vladivostok saloon to name a few, and you'd think that the last thing we need is another John Wick wannabe, but there is enough substance to make it stand apart from the crowd and hold its head up high.
