Lawrence “Larry” Daniel Mac Donald, Esq.
Lawrence “Larry” Daniel Mac Donald, Esq. 72, Plains, PA, beloved husband, stepfather, brother, uncle, nephew, colleague, and friend died Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Allied Services Hospice in Wilkes-Barre, PA following a long-term illness surrounded in love by his family.
Born December 2, 1950, in Highland Park, MI, Larry was the oldest son of Lawrence C. Mac Donald and Dorothy A. (Wilson) Mac Donald. Creative, talented, and a loving mentor to his six siblings, he was affectionally referred to as “The Man” for his “polished esquired” appearance during his college years including a pipe (the brunt of many pranks and jokes), and his incredible knowledge and wit of historical, sporting, musical, and geographical facts.
Larry was a proud graduate of Detroit - Catholic Central High School, Class of 1969, receiving his graduate degree in Business Administration from King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, PA (1973) and his Juris Doctorate from Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Lansing, MI (1976), passing the bar exam in both Michigan (1976) and Pennsylvania (1977). He was admitted into the U.S. District Court, Middle District of PA (1977), the U.S. Tax Court (1976), and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Third Circuit (1996). Larry opened a private practice in Wilkes-Barre, PA specializing in Family Law for over 45 years retiring from his professional career as the Hearing Officer for the Luzerne County Domestic Relations in Wilkes- Barre, PA in 2022.
As a member of the Wilkes-Barre Rotary Club, Larry provided service to others, promoted integrity, world understanding, goodwill, and peace through his fellowship as a business, professional, and community leader receiving The Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Being a member of the Wyoming Valley Country Club, and the Westmorland Club fulfilled his love for the game of golf, fine dining, and connecting with others. A nod goes out to his best buds, the Lawyers, the Judge, and the Psychologist for their years of devoted friendship. After marrying his wife, Dorothy (Yatsko) Mac Donald in 2004, cruise travel, and trips to the Jersey shore and Broadway in NYC fulfilled the simple joys of life.
Larry was pre-deceased by his parents, and grandparents, Gordon and Margaret (Woodcroft) Wilson, and John and Winifred (Bertrand) Mac Donald, his mother’s partner, Bob Mehrman, his brother, Paul Mac Donald, his brother-in-law, Robert DiGennaro, his sister-in-law, Sue (Sklarcheck) Mac Donald, his wife, Dorothy’s daughter, Lori Sokoloski, sister-in-law, Mary Ann Yatsko, and brother-in-law, Michael Murphy.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy; her daughter, Amy (Sokoloski) Connolly, husband, Michael Jr. and their children,
Michael III and Jack. His stepson, Nolan Margo, his wife, Jamie and their children Chloe and Isla Findon-Henry. His siblings, in-laws, and their spouses, Margaret Mac Donald, Terri (Hassett) Mac Donald, Betsy (Mac Donald) Geheb and husband, Fred, Mike Mac Donald and wife, Louise (Christensen) Mac Donald, Chris Mac Donald and partner, Annette Krasinski, and Fred Mac Donald and wife Jo Ellen (Beck) Mac Donald, brother-in-law, Robert Yatsko, sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Yatsko) Murphy, and sister-in-law, Catherine (Yatsko) Charnitski. His maternal aunts, Betty (Wilson) Blackett, and Georgia Ann (Schaffe) Wilson and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Thank you for tagging me and sending the video along! Simcoe's views on slavery are as straightforward as his way dealing with it as a British military officer and colonial administrator are complex and at times, almost contradictory.
As I don't know a great deal about the War of 1812 beyond the basic framework, I am excited to learn more about it, and from a more diverse perspective!
Hannah Jarvis had a clear opinion on Simcoe's effort to end slavery in Upper Canada, which I will quote below.
Just to give anyone reading this a quick idea of the historical framework, Simcoe had at different times in his life prior to his governorship expressed his opposition to slavery, and felt prompted to outlaw slavery as lieutenant governor of Upper Canada after a William Grisely, a white man who had agreed to approach Simcoe on behalf of the Black Loyalist Peter Martin, informed Simcoe of an incident that had taken place at the Upper Canadian border with the US: a young black woman by the name of Chloe Cooley had been tied up and forced into a boat, in order to be sold in the US. Cooley had struggled and tried to draw attention to herself by screaming, but was not aided by any of the bystanders, and subsequently, only Martin, by way of Grisely, reported what had happened. Simcoe, appalled, wanted to take immediate action and outlaw slavery in Upper Canada, which however was vetoed by the Legislative Assembly, of whom a considerable number of members owned slaves.
Simcoe's insistence ended in the Act Against Slavery of 1793 being passed, which was a compromise between Simcoe's position and the slave-owning officials by merely limitting slavery in the province, but not outlawing it. Persons who were enslaved at the time the act was passed would remain slaves, unless freed; children born to an enslaved mother would be freed on their 25th birthday and the importation of slaves into Upper Canada was banned.
Thus, the act was of no real benefit to slaves in Upper Canada at the time the act was passed; nevertheless, Hannah Jarvis felt compelled to complain (read: twist the facts) in a letter to her father dated 25 September 1793, saying that
He [Simcoe] has by a piece of chicanery freed all the Negroes by which he has rendered himself unpopular with those of his suite [the Legislative Assembly].
To expand a little bit on the personality of the woman behind the above quote, Hannah Jarvis was a difficult person, to put it more diplomatically than she deserves. In her letters, she frequently enjoyed making disparaging remarks about the British élite in Upper Canada, her favourite target being Elizabeth Simcoe, whose height, weight, and supposed speech impediment she commented on negatively, among other things.
While people like Elizabeth Simcoe were in the privileged position to simply ignore Hannah Jarvis' stream of constant tasteless commentary, others could not.
There is the letter of Henry Lewis, a slave of the Jarvis-family, who in 1798 fled to Schenectady, New York, from where he wrote a letter to William Jarvis, listing among the motives for his decision that
the reason why I left your house is this your women [Hannah Jarvis] vexed me to so high a degree that it was far beyond the power of man to support it
Henry Lewis's account does by no means lessen William Jarvis' role as an enslaver on account of his supposedly 'humane' treatment of Lewis, which the latter himself mentions in the letter. Lewis's letter does shed some light on why he may have chosen to speak of Jarvis in a friendly manner. I haven't found a full transcript of the letter anyhwere, so I made my own (apologies for the less than ideal formatting, but Tumblr won't let me alter it):
[page 1]
Schenectady May 3 1798
My desired to support my self as free
man and enjoy all the benefits which
may result from my being free in a
country whear a Blackman is defended
by the laws as much as a white
man is induce me to make you an
offer of purchasing myself. I am a
black man and am not so able to pay you
the money down which you may
ask for me but upon these conditions
I will purchase myself: ten pounds this year
and every [crossed out] year after Sixteen pounds
untill the whole sum is payed. I should
wish to pay the money to Joseph Yates the
la-[illegible: ink smear] Mare [mayor] of this setty [city] becaus he is the
most proper man that I can think
of at present. the reason why I left your
house is this your women vexed me to so high
a degree that it was far beyond the
power of man to support it[.] it is
true and I will say in all company
that I always lived as well
in your house as I should wish
[page 2]
pleas to wish to Joseph Yates what you will
taken in cash for me and let him be the man
to whom I shall pay the money yearly.
In a supplant manner I beg your
Parden ten thousand times and beg
that you would be so kind as to permit
me to purchase myself and at as a low
a rate as any other person. My mistress
I also wish [crossed out: ten thousand Parden] long life
and good health and pleas to tell her I
beg her parden ten thousand times
My mistress I shall always remember
on account of her great kindness to me
I remain your affectionate servant
Henry Lewis
Keeping in mind that Henry Lewis hoped to obtain his freedom from William Jarvis, it is highly possible that his politeness, well-wishes and deferential tone may not speak so much of any true regret on Lewis' part for having left his enslavers, as they speak of his hope to legally obtain his freedom by convincing Jarvis to agree to his proposed scheme of paying off a sum named by Jarvis for the supposed monetary worth of Lewis as, legally, Jarvis's chattel. This may also explain why he, after mentioning being "vexed" by Hannah Jarvis to the point she played a part in solidifying his decision to leave, extends his well-wishes to her.
Taking all this into account, I am appalled that a 21st century edition of Hannah Jarvis' book comes without a statement or preface of the editor regarding her involvement and participation in slavery in Upper Canada. But then, alas, it is probably a lot simpler to gloss over the ugly truth and coat it in a cloak of bowdlerised quaintness.
While I know a substantial deal about Hannah and William Jarvis, I wish I would know more about Henry Lewis, but sadly, as far as I have come in my search for him, I have not found out what happened to him after having sent the letter, though perhaps there are archival sources somewhere that aren't digitised and might shed a light on his fate. At least, I would like to hope so.
If Hannah Jarvis can have a book and be frequently mentioned in scholarly works pertaining the early history of the British colony of Upper Canada, it is beyond time Henry Lewis's story is told as well.
Sorry I have been negligent of tumblr, this is like a con weekend for me. There was the all-day online workshop from the British Commission for Maritime History (BCMH), and today I went to the History Symposium online stream about the Coloured Corps at the Battle of Queenston Heights, with Natasha Henry and Jim Hill.
Black Canadian War of 1812 veterans getting land grants was discussed, and I was pleasantly surprised that some of the Queenston Heights and Fort George veterans received land grants for their service, because I know other Black Canadian veterans, including Loyalists from the American Revolution, often got screwed over. Even when land grants were given, often they were in poor locations. It's unfortunate that so many Black War of 1812 veterans faced discrimination and weren't properly rewarded for their service (especially on the US side, needless to say).
“Runchey’s Coloured Corps” by Cameron Porteous
It was a nice informative presentation about the War of 1812 in the Niagara peninsula in general, and it will be uploaded to the History Symposium YouTube channel later. They make a lot of Napoleonic Wars, War of 1812, Canadian history and Regency-era content (Zach Pinsent works with them to demonstrate men's period fashion!)

John Graves Simcoe
For those who don't know much about John Graves Simcoe, I am going to be posting some fun things, as a Canadian who has lived his entire life in towns/places impacted by Simcoe himself. These are from his time in Canada, since I assume those who have seen TURN have a very vague idea of what he did in the Revolutionary War (even though it's very inaccurate).
John Graves Simcoe (25 February 1752 – 26 October 1806) was a British Army general and the first lieutenant governor of Upper Canada from 1791 until 1796 in southern Ontario and the watersheds of Georgian Bay and Lake Superior. He founded York (now Toronto) and was instrumental in introducing institutions such as courts of law, trial by jury, English common law, and freehold land tenure, and also in the abolition of slavery in Canada.
His long-term goal was the development of Upper Canada (Ontario) as a model community built on aristocratic and conservative principles, designed to demonstrate the superiority of those principles to the republicanism and democracy of the United States. His energetic efforts were only partially successful in establishing a local gentry, a thriving Church of England, and an anti-American coalition with select Indigenous nations. He is seen by many Canadians as a founding figure in Canadian history, especially by those in Southern Ontario.[3] He is commemorated in Toronto with Simcoe Day.
First Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada (known today as; Ontario.)
The Constitutional Act 1791 divided Canada into the Provinces of Upper Canada (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec). The Act established separate governments and legislative assemblies for each province. Lower Canada was the French-speaking eastern portion, which retained the French civil law and protections for the Roman Catholic Church established when Britain took over the area after its defeat of the French in the Seven Years' War. Upper Canada was the western area, newly settled after the American Revolutionary War. The settlers were mostly English speakers, including Loyalists from the Thirteen Colonies, and also the Six Nations of the Iroquois, who had been British allies during the war. The Crown had purchased land from the Mississauga and other First Nations to give the Loyalists land grants in partial compensation for property lost in the United States, and to help them set up new communities and develop this territory.[18]
Simcoe was appointed Lieutenant-Governor on 12 September 1791, and left for Canada with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Sophia, leaving three daughters behind in England with their aunt. They left England in September and arrived in Canada on 11 November. Due to severe weather, the Simcoes spent the winter in Quebec City. Simcoe finally reached Kingston, Upper Canada on 24 June 1792.[17]
In a proclamation on 16 July 1792, he renamed several islands at the mouth of the archipelago at the head of the St. Lawrence river for the victorious Generals at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham (Amherst Island, Gage Island, Wolfe Island, and Howe Island).[19]
Under the Constitutional Act, the provincial government consisted of the Lieutenant-Governor, an appointed Executive Council and Legislative Council, and an elected Legislative Assembly. The first meeting of the nine-member Legislative Council and sixteen-member Legislative Assembly took place at Newark (now Niagara-on-the-Lake) on 17 September 1792.
Following Simcoe's work precipitated by the Chloe Cooley incident, the Assembly passed the first Act Against Slavery in the British Empire in 1793, and the English colonists of Upper Canada took pride in this distinction with respect to the French-Canadian populace of Lower Canada. The Upper Canadians valued their common law legal system, as opposed to the civil law of Quebec, which had chafed them ever since 1763. This was one of the primary reasons for the partition of 1791. Simcoe collaborated extensively with his Attorney-General John White on the file.
The principles of the British Constitution do not admit of that slavery which Christianity condemns. The moment I assume the Government of Upper Canada under no modification will I assent to a law that discriminates by dishonest policy between natives of Africa, America, or Europe.
— John Graves Simcoe, Address to the Legislative Assembly[20]
Slavery was thus ended in Upper Canada long before it was abolished in the British Empire as a whole. By 1810, there were no slaves in Upper Canada, but the Crown did not abolish slavery throughout the Empire until 1834.
Simcoe's first priority was the Northwest Indian War between the United States and the "Western Confederacy" of Native Americans west of the Appalachian Mountains and south of the Great Lakes (the Shawnee, Miami, Wyandot, and other tribes). This conflict had begun in 1785, and was still raging when Simcoe arrived in 1792. Simcoe had hoped to form an Indian buffer state between the two countries, even though he distrusted Joseph Brant, the main Indian leader. Simcoe rejected the section of the Treaty of Paris (1783) which awarded that area to the US, on the grounds that American actions had nullified the treaty.[21] However, the French Revolutionary Wars broke out in 1793. The government in London decided to seek good terms with the United States. Simcoe was instructed to avoid giving the US reason to mistrust Britain but, at the same time, to keep the Natives on both sides of the border friendly to Britain. The Indians asked for British military support, which was initially refused, but in 1794 Britain supplied the Indians with rifles and ammunition.[22]
In February 1794, the governor general, Lord Dorchester, expecting the US to ally with France, said that war was likely to break out between the US and Britain before the year was out. This encouraged the Indians in their war. Dorchester ordered Simcoe to rally the Indians and arm British vessels on the Great Lakes. He also built Fort Miami (present-day Maumee, Ohio) to supply the Indians. Simcoe expelled Americans from a settlement on the southern shore of Lake Erie which had threatened British control of the lake. US President Washington denounced the "irregular and high-handed proceeding of Mr. Simcoe."[23] While Dorchester planned for a defensive war, Simcoe urged London to declare war: "Upper Canada is not to be defended by remaining within the boundary line."[24] Dorchester was officially reprimanded by the Crown for his strong speech against the Americans in 1794.
Simcoe realised that Newark made an unsuitable capital because it was on the Canada–US border and subject to attack. He proposed moving the capital to a more defensible position, in the middle of Upper Canada's southwestern peninsula between Lake Erie and Lake Huron. He named the new location London, and renamed the river there the Thames in anticipation of the change. Dorchester rejected this proposal, but accepted Simcoe's second choice, the present site of Toronto. Simcoe moved the capital there in 1793, and renamed the settlement York after Frederick, Duke of York, King George III's second son. The town was severely underdeveloped at the time of its founding so he brought with him politicians, builders, Nova Scotia timber men, and Englishmen skilled in whipsawing and cutting joists and rafters.[25]
Simcoe began construction of two roads through Upper Canada, for defence and to encourage settlement and trade. Yonge Street (named after British Minister of War Sir George Yonge) ran north–south from York to Lake Simcoe. Soldiers of the Queen's Rangers began cutting the road in August 1793, reaching Holland Landing in 1796. Dundas Street (named for Colonial Secretary Henry Dundas) ran east–west, between York and London.
The Northwest Indian War ended after the United States defeated the Indians at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. They made peace under the Treaty of Greenville. While still at war with France, Britain could not afford to antagonise the US in the Jay Treaty of 1794, and agreed to withdraw north of the Great Lakes, as agreed in the Treaty of Paris (1783). Simcoe evacuated the frontier forts.
Legacy
In the winter of 1779, the first known Valentine's Day letter in America was given by then Lieutenant Colonel John Simcoe to Sarah 'Sally' Townsend.[31]
Simcoe Street in Oyster Bay, New York is named after him for his destruction of a vast apple orchard and reconstruction of a hill fort on the site.[32]
Act Against Slavery passed in 1793, leading to the abolition of slavery in Upper Canada by 1810. It was superseded by the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 that abolished slavery across the British Empire.
Simcoe named London, Ontario and the River Thames in Upper Canada.
He named Lake Simcoe and Simcoe County to the west and north of Lake Simcoe in honour of his father.
Simcoe named his summer home Castle Frank for his first son Francis Gwillim, who was preceded by eight daughters. (It is in what is now named Cabbagetown, a neighbourhood in downtown Toronto.)[33]
The Ontario Heritage Foundation placed a plaque in Exeter's cathedral precinct to commemorate his life.
Simcoe's regiment is still called the Queen's York Rangers, now an armoured reconnaissance regiment of the Canadian Forces reserves.
Many places in Canada were named in honour of Simcoe:
The town of Simcoe in southwestern Ontario
The Simcoe Fairgrounds in Simcoe.
Civic Holiday, a statutory holiday celebrated throughout Canada under a variety of names by region,[34] was established in honour of Simcoe by the Toronto City Council in 1869.[35] Other Ontario municipalities and then other provinces soon took up the holiday as well, leading to its Canada-wide status, but without any attribution to Simcoe. In 1965, the Toronto City Council declared the holiday would henceforth be known as Simcoe Day within Toronto.[35] Attempts have been made to have the official provincial name—still Civic Holiday[34]—amended, but none have succeeded.
Governor Simcoe Secondary School in St. Catharines, Ontario
Governor Simcoe Public School. Grades K – 8, in London, Ontario. The now closed and demolished school was located at the corner of Simcoe and Clarence Streets.
Three parallel streets in downtown Toronto, John Street, Graves Street, and Simcoe Street, are all located near the fort where Simcoe lived during his early years in York and were named for him. Graves Street was later renamed Duncan Street.
Simcoe Street, Simcoe Street United Church, and Simcoe Hall Settlement House in Oshawa.
Simcoe Street in New Westminster and Simcoe Park was named by Colonel Moody in reference to the surveying of the area after the city of Toronto.
Simcoe Street, Simcoe Street School and the Simcoe Street School Tigers Bantam Baseball Team of Niagara Falls
Simcoe Island, located near Kingston, Ontario
Simcoe Hall, located on the St. George campus of the University of Toronto
John Graves Simcoe Armoury, located on Industrial Parkway in Aurora, Ontario
There are two places named for Simcoe with the title Lord, but Simcoe was not made a Lord in his lifetime. They are the following:
Lord Simcoe Drive in Brampton, Ontario
Lord Simcoe Hotel, which operated from 1956 to 1981
Captain John Kennaway Simcoe, the last member of the Simcoe family, died without issue in 1891 and was survived by his widow beyond 1911
In Popular Culture
A fictionalised version of John Graves Simcoe is a primary antagonist in the 2014–2017 AMC drama Turn: Washington's Spies, portrayed by Samuel Roukin.[37] He is portrayed in the series as a cruel and ruthless sociopath.
Despite the strong fictionalisation of the namesake TV-show character, several biographical aspects of the latter's historical counterpart appear to have been adapted for and transferred onto the fictional character Edmund Hewlett. For instance, Hewlett's romantic ambitions regarding Anna Strong in the series resemble Simcoe's courtship of Sarah Townsend, sister of Culper Ring spy Robert Townsend, for whom he wrote a poem that is thought to be the first verifiable valentine on the North American continent.[38] It is presumed that Townsend, much like the fictionalised portrayal of Anna Strong on Turn, may have gathered and passed on intelligence gleaned from her unsuspecting suitor to the Culper Ring.
Similarly, Hewlett's close bond with his horse Bucephalus (presumably named after Bucephalus, the horse of Alexander the Great) which overarches all four seasons, appears to have been inspired by history: in 1783, John Graves Simcoe sent a series of letters to New York in order to find the horse he had ridden on campaign, Salem. Salem was located and Simcoe subsequently paid the considerable sum of £40 to have him shipped to England and thus returned to him.[39] Shortly before his departure to Upper Canada almost a decade later, it is reported he was greatly concerned for Salem's welfare in his absence, therefore making arrangements for the latter's care and upkeep.[40]

Now for some images, taken by me in Chatham, as well as Queen's Park in Toronto.
Now, some fun facts about me, related to Simcoe:
I was born in Chatham/Chatham-Kent
I go to high school in Simcoe County
I'm debating going to college in Toronto (to become a history teacher)
I've been to the Simcoe County Museum, where they have a bust of Simcoe and a whole wall of information about him (from what I could see- I was there on a WWI field trip and didn't really get to explore)
Every where I've lived/been to school, has been impacted by John Graves Simcoe.
In reality, he was not that bad a dude. TURN just TURNed (ha, get it) into the psychopathic antagonist they wanted. Alright, this has been fun but I need to go study Canadian law, piece homies.

Depiction of Loyalist refugees on their way to the Canadas during the American Revolution, by Howard Pyle (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The Royal Proclamation of 1763
the Capitulation of Montreal
from 1760 to 1763
the Royal Proclamation 1763
We have seen that the slaves in Nouvelle-France were mostly the Indigenous people of North America who themselves had slaves. Slavery between Amerindians is humiliating, but it is not racism. Amerindian nations fought one another and the better warrior could enslave members of another Indigenous nation.
For the purpose of this post, suffice it to know that as France grew more vulnerable, its Indian allies fled. France was outnumbered. After losing the battle of the Plains of Abraham, thus named because the land where the battle was fought belonged to fisherman Abraham Martin. Montreal capitulated, but its native allies were to be protected. (See The Capitulation of Montreal, Canadian Encyclopedia.)
No authentic images of Pontiac are known to exist. This interpretation was painted by John Mix Stanley. (Photo and Caption Credit:Wikipedia)
They weren’t. New France’s Amerindians were at the mercy of Britain’s Thirteen Colonies. They feared a land rush, but Chief Pontiac fought the Thirteen Colonies quite successfully, which he could not do indefinitely. To protect Amerindians, England issued the Royal Proclamation of 1763, providing Aboriginals with a large reserve. The territory was large and nearly impenetrable. Later, the Act of Quebec (1774) ended attempts to assimilate the former New France. A very large province of Quebec was created, which, in the eyes of American patriots, was an Intolerable Act.

Upper and Lower Canadas
The light pink shows the land where the Indigenous population of Canada could live without fear of losing their land. In 1775, Louisiana belonged to Spain. In the second map, we see Quebec as it was in 1774, under the Quebec Act. We also see part of Rupert’s Land.

The Revolutionary War
The future United States signed a Declaration of Independence on 4th July 1776 and it then fought its Revolutionary War, or War of Independence, from 1675 to 1783, defeating Britain. This victory was formalized by the Treaty of Paris 1783.

White loyalists and Black loyalists
However, among Americans, some families and individuals did not approve of independence. They fled to the large British province of Quebec. To help United Empire Loyalist, the large Quebec was divided into two Canadas: Upper Canada and, lower down the St Lawrence, Lower Canada. The Constitutional Act, which divided the Province of Quebec, was legislated in 1791.
The Constitutional Act did not divide the province of Quebec into an English-language Upper Canada and a French-language Lower Canada. The Eastern Townships,[1] the area of Quebec where I live, was given to the Loyalists and their slaves, whom they were allowed to bring to Canada as part of their property. The Loyalists also settled in Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
The arrival of the Loyalists was a blessing and a curse. The future Canada welcomed the Loyalists, Whites and Blacks. However, the citizens of the former New France were a minority.
300 Blacks went to (Quebec)
500 Upper Canada (Ontario)
1,200 to the Maritimes (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island)
White Loyalists and Black Loyalists
There were Black loyalists who had earned their freedom by fighting with Britain against the future United States had earned their freedom. Loyalists also settled in Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

The Blacks in Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia would be Black slaves’ best destination. Although the Imperial Act of 1790 assured slave owners that they could retain Black slaves, in 1788, Nova Scotia abolitionist James Drummond MacGregor from Pictou “published the first anti-slavery literature in Canada and began purchasing slaves’ freedom” (…). He set an example. Many Nova Scotia Loyalists freed their slaves. (See Slavery in Canada, Wikipedia.)
However, a total of 3,500 Black Loyalists left the current United States. Nova Scotia would be home to many, were it not that white Loyalists attacked Black Loyalists. The Shelburne Riots that took place in July 1784 revealed racism. White Loyalists were given the best land, which they felt entitled to as White Loyalist. So, in 1792, 1300 Black loyalists left for Sierra Leone, where they would be free and would govern themselves.
Until recent reforms in immigration, about 37% of Canada’s Black community lived in Nova Scotia.
The Act against Slavery, 1793 (Wikipedia)
Vrooman vs Cooley
Ontario slave owners opposed the enfranchisement of Black slaves. In Ontario the case of Chloe Cooley, is a sad portrait of entitlement. Chloe tried escape an abusive owner, Sergeant Adam Vrooman. He had bound her in a boat in an attempt to take her to the State of New. She protested violently and the event was witnessed by , led to the passage or an the Act Against Slavery of 1793. On 14 March 1793, Vrooman bound Cooley in a boat in an attempt to take her across the Niagara River to the State of New York, where he would sell her. She protested violently and the event was witnessed by former slave Peter Martin and by William Grisely. The event was reported to Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada. However, Vrooman had not broken the law. Loyalists could bring their slaves to British North America. He also noted that in 1760, the French inhabitants of Lower Canada had been allowed to keep their slaves. Yet, despite the reluctance of the several government of Upper Canada, the Act Against Slavery of 1793 was legislated.
In Ontario, the case of Chloe Cooley, who tried to escape an abusive owner, Sergeant Adam Vrooman, led to the unconvincing passage of an the Act Against Slavery of 1793. On 14 March 1793, Vrooman bound Cooley in a boat in an attempt to take her across the Niagara River to the State of New York, where he would sell her. She protested violently and the event was witnessed by former slave Peter Martin and by William Grisely. Peter Martin brought the incident to the attention of Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe. However, Vrooman had not broken the law, so accusation could be no more than an information. Loyalists could bring their slaves to British North America. He also noted that in 1760, the inhabitants of the had been allowed to keep their property. Yet, despite the reluctance of the several government of Upper Canada, the Act Against Slavery of 1793 was legislated.
Let us read the letter Sergeant Vrooman wrote to the authorities. He used the law to perpetuate an abuse. In this respect, his letter is a classic:
[…] been informed that an information had been lodged against him to the Attorney General relative to his proceedings in his Sale of said Negroe Woman; your Petitioner had received no information concerning the freedom of Slaves in this Province, except a report which prevailed among themselves, and if he has transgressed against the Laws of his Country by disposing of Property (which from the legality of the purchase from Benjamin Hardison) he naturally supposed to be his own, it was done without knowledge of any Law being in force to the contrary. (See Chloe Cooley and the Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada. The Canadian Encyclopedia.)
Laws can be used to wrong a human being. In this respect, the fate of Chloe Clooney is a classic. In the eyes of slave-owning Loyalists, ownership guaranteed everything. If so, what a nightmare for a woman.
The arrival of the Loyalists led to the Constitutional Act of 1791, which separated a large Quebec into Upper and Lower Canada. French-speaking Canadiens lived in Lower Canada, part of which was the Eastern Townships, given to Loyalists. I cannot make sense of the Constitutional Act of 1871. It received royal assent in June 1791 and it seems an attempt to assimilate French-speaking Canadians.
The Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada received royal assent on 9 July 1793, but in Upper Canada, slavery was not abolished until 1833. However, the Underground Railroad, helped slaves flee to Canada. United Empire Loyalists had taken their slaves with them, as property. But Blacks that escaped had not been owned.
Conclusion
I will conclude here. We must introduce the Underground Railroad, an organization that helped Black Slaves flee to Canada. I am reading The Slave in Canada by William Henrick Riddell. It is an Internet Archive publication. I have looked for videos and saw one about the Royal Proclamation of 1763 There was a rush for land which was called freedom. The proclamation deprived the colonists of their freedom, as though freedom allowed. An Aboriginal was not seen as a person, nor was a person whose colour was not white.
Love to everyone ♥
I’ve not been well and may need to close my blog.
_______________ [1] “Under the terms of the Constitutional Act of 1791, the Eastern Townships were open to settlement and a land rush followed. Most of the 3,000 or so settlers came from the United States. A few were Loyalists, at least in spirit, but most simply wanted land and had no strong feeling about nationality. Many more immigrated from the British Isles, including Gaelic-speaking Scots.” (See Eastern Townships, Wikipedia)

Good news:
The University of Ottawa has taken a small step in the right direction following recent carding incidents. A former vice chair of the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario has been hired to lead an inquiry, and a new framework has been released to address racism on campus.
Taylor Shields and noted homophobe Tyler Albrecht lost the jobs they were appointed to shortly before Dean French stepped down from his position as Doug Ford’s chief of staff.
This week in Ontario’s history:
June 17, 2003: Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announces that his government will put forward legislation to legalize same-sex marriage in Canada and that he intends to ask for advice from the Supreme Court to protect the new law from provincial appeals (Alberta Premier Ralph Klein had threatened to appeal immediately).
June 19, 1793: The Upper Canada Assembly passes an act to ban bringing slaves into the colony but not to ban slavery outright; roughly half of the government’s members owned slaves but chose to support the act after negotiating the terms. The initiative was partially triggered by Lt. Governor John Simcoe’s outrage over the treatment of Chloe Cooley, who was held as a slave in the Niagara area.
