Born on July 1, 1882, DR BC Roy was one of the prominent freedom fighters as well as a highly respected doctor who was also awarded the Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961. Roy played an important role in the establishment of medical institutions like Jadavpur TB. Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Victoria Institution (College), Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital, and Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for Women and Children.

Every year on July 1, India celebrates National Doctors Day in honour of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, a Bharat Ratna awardee, former chief minister of West Bengal and one of the most popular Congress leaders from eastern India.

The first elected Chief Minister of West Bengal was crucial in the establishment of medical institutions like Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Victoria Institution (college), Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital and the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children.

Dr BC Roy was born on 1st July in the year 1882 and died on the same date in the year 1962, at the age of 80 years. He is one of the rare people in the history of India who has pursued FRCS and MRCP degrees at the same time. Dr. BC Roy was awarded the country’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna on 4th February 1961.

This day is celebrated to show gratitude to all workers in the field of medicine, who have unconditionally and selflessly helped us in the time of need.
