Favorite Villains - Reverse Flash (The Flash/DC)
As one of DC’s most famous superheroes, the Flash has his own fair share of villains--and a lot I really like! I think Captain Cold is one of the greatest comic book characters ever--but my favorite escapades of his (Salvation Run, Legends of Tomorrow, and his Geoff Johns comic run at odds with Chillblaine come to mind) see him walking the line between good and evil. He’s more Flash’s greatest rival than archenemy. Then there’s Grodd, who’s awesome, but has grown to be a foe of the Justice League as a whole (where I feel he works better) over someone that can be exclusively pinned to the Flash. So….who does that leave as the Flash’s most vile archnemesis? Why, none other than Eobard Thawne, the Reverse Flash. A citizen of the future, Eobard Thawne is a time traveling speedster bent on killing the Flash. His motives differ from version to version, but can be boiled down to a desire to outdo his rival in speed from so many years ago, and he can only do that by traveling back in time and challenging him head on.
I discuss sheer animosity for one’s nemesis a lot on this list, but I’m not sure anyone encompasses that quite the way Eobard Thawne does. He HATES the Flash with every fiber of his being. Some comics portray that he looked up to the Flash at a younger age before his desire to be faster consumed him--admiration turned to hatred simply because Thawne’s ego and hubris couldn’t stand that the very person that inspired him could outdo him. As his name tells, the Reverse Flash is the Flash’s antithesis in every way, shape, and form. While the Flash is such a comforting hero because you can always count on him to be there in the nick of time, to save you at literally the very last second before the train hits, the Reverse Flash is a red eyed phantom, fast enough to watch you from two places at once before you even know it. They’re very much the same in ability, but they couldn’t be more different in how they utilize them.
Thawne’s capabilities of time travel allow him to fuck anything he likes. He caused a causational paradox by going back in time and killing Barry’s mother, one of the most impacting and traumatizing moments in the young hero’s development. In many ways, the Reverse Flash created his nemesis in every way he destroyed him. The CW Flash show takes Eobard in a new direction when he finds himself stranded in the past during one of his skirmishes. Realizing that he was stuck in an era before Barry became the Flash, Thawne decided he’d blend into the era, killing and stealing the identity of scientist Harrison Wells, and in the present mentoring Barry in becoming the Flash in hopes he will create enough speed to open a wormhole back to his own time.
Much like Peter Parker and the Green Goblin, Thawne actually develops a good deal of affection for Barry as well as the rest of his pupils he adapts as Wells. He’s a very kind hearted coach figure and, again, inspires Barry to be the best hero he can in many ways. This makes the reveal that he is the one who murdered Barry’s mother all the more heartbreaking. This is a man they trusted for years, after all. Considering how much Barry idolized Wells, it’s fitting considering how much Thawne idolized Barry in the distant future, and in both cases, they grew to hate one another. But my favorite Reverse Flash escapade is easily the Flashpoint story. Thawne manages to coax the Flash into using his speed to turn back time and stop his mother’s murder. This causes a catastrophic paradox; Superman is under lock and key with the military, Bruce Wayne died on the night of the fateful walk from the theatre, leaving his father to be Batman, and the Amazons and Atlanteans are waging war that’s about to end the world. Thawne technically caused all of this, and just by pushing Barry’s buttons just the right way.
And Thawne RELISHES the apocalypse. He’s fully aware that he’s about to die with the rest of the world, but he doesn’t care because it means watching Barry die, guilty of what he’s done. The way he lectures Barry on the dangers of time travel is delicious. “But you didn’t save JFK, or keep Hitler in art school! No! You saved your mommy! And I’m the bad guy?!”. Even though Thawne pushed him over the edge, Barry feels the brunt of causing all of this, and it’s a tremendous victory for the Reverse Flash before he’s ultimately foiled. His deep, red eyes on goals of decimation and despair, there’s no slowing down the sinister yellow streak.

Is freezing in a garret a prerequisite?
There is this rather romanticised (and antiquated) idea that great art is created by young (mostly) male wannabees who laugh cruel fate in the face while they continue with their creative endeavours, no matter chillblains and empty stomachs, ice-cold draughts and ragged clothes. Our literary hero hoards his candle stumps so as to light his […]
