Small Voices, Big Dreams: How Education Helped Me Find My Voice. #smallvoices
Small Voices, Big Dreams. Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing. My unadulterated desire is to do both during my time on this earth. From the very first moment that I took pen to paper, it became my passion. I wanted to use my voice to inspire others. With it, I could create worlds like my own or ones that I had only dreamt of. I could bring to life heroes and…

Read the full article

Tell Australia to #BringThemHere
We may not be able to stop Australia supporting Trump’s border control, but what we can do is refuse to let ~1200 certified refugees seeking asylum in Australia to be condemned to months or years more of uncertainty while we fight over the US refugee deal. While we wait, men women and children continue to be locked up with poor housing, health, food, and even insufficient water provisions, for months or even years - some of them, with their physical and sexual abusers.
“We do not have years. Australia cannot allow another person to die or suffer because of our actions.”
GetUp! and 71 other community groups put a full page ad in the Australian this week - read it below the cut - and that is a big deal and a big show of support for the impending end of, or at least relief from, one of Australia’s longest-lasting and cruelest immigration policies.
Tell your MP to provide safety for the refugees detained on Manus Island and Nauru. Here (x)
Read the The Australian ad below:
An open letter from civil society to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, We, as a coalition of organisations and community groups from around Australia, are writing to express our concern regarding the humanitarian crisis that Australia has created. Successive Australian governments have managed and funded offshore detention camps on Manus Island and Nauru. The people detained there are clearly Australia's responsibility. This situation has reached crisis point, and immediate action must be taken. Beyond the reports of physical and sexual abuse, including of children; inadequate medical attention; suicides and attempted suicides; even a murder; the extinguishment of hope has pushed people to the edge. Many of these people have been recognised as refugees. We owe them protection and safety now. Meanwhile, politicians are spending years engaged in lengthy negotiations as to the fate of these men, women and children. With the US resettlement deal in serious doubt, the most obvious and humane solution is to clear the camps and bring these people to Australia until a safe long term, appropriate outcome for them can be guaranteed. We do not have years. Australia cannot allow another person to die or suffer because of our actions. This is a crisis. We are calling on both major parties to form a bipartisan commitment to immediately evacuate the camps and bring these people to safety. Diana, 10, lives in Mexico. When asked what it means to be safe in school, she said, “It means that, for example, if I’m here at home and I get scolded and feel bad because of what I did, at my school I can forget about what happened here, and think about mathematics, Spanish and science. And I like it a lot because I can learn new things there.”
Diana’s one of more than 6,000 children in 41 countries who answered questions for ChildFund’s annual Small Voices, Big Dreams survey. This year’s focus is on education. Read more about children’s views on school, safety and their future. These small voices are important!
