🎤 Next Speaker: Emma McKee, @thestitchgawd Emma McKee isn’t your average cross stitcher. Born in Kansas City, she was first introduced to the medium through her mother, a British opera singer who frequently attempted to teach Emma how to stitch during her childhood. Yet she always refused to learn, finding the British craft too antiquated — that is, until she found a way to make cross stitching work for her. In 2014, Emma stitched her first piece: An adaptation of Will Prince’s artwork for Chance the Rapper’s song “Hey Ma.” She followed that with a piece for street artist JC Rivera, Chicago’s “Bear Champ.” Her portfolio expanded from there, as she firmly planted herself within Chicago’s rap community, as the scene’s preeminent — and only — hip-hop cross stitcher, earning the name Stitch Gawd. Since 2014, she’s created countless pieces for musicians and artists both in and outside Chicago. 📅 Friday, November 15th at 8:30-10am 📍 ⭐ In-Person Only ⭐ at Marwen - 833 N. Orleans St., Chicago, 60610 🎵 DJ Mike Caliber 🎟️ Registration Opens TODAY (Friday, November 7th at 9am). Tickets go first come, first served. Limited! 👋 High fives and humble gratitude to our local sponsors: Big Shoulders Coffee | Busy Beaver Button Company | Downstate Donuts | DJ Mike Caliber 💛 And a big shout out to our global partner: Adobe

Three cheers to our Digital Illustrator 🖍️ Katya Balakina (@xrenobl) for turning our September's talk into magnificent visual notes. 📝
Check out this graphic recording about Natasha Oliveras's talk on the theme #Reflection 🪞
Here's quick takeaways from Sept's event:
- If we can't be ourselves freely, how can we create freely.
- Remove the notion of authority.
- Let people speak their own language.
- Make it safe for everyone to be questioned.
- Take a moment reground & reflect on the instances that seem overwhelmed and big.

🎤 Next Speaker: Natasha Oliveras-Figueroa Natasha Oliveras is a globally-minded creative leader with extensive experience across all aspects of advertising including broadcast, print, radio, OOH, digital, social, experiential, on-premise, and retail/shopper. She’s changed the way Coca-Cola approached their digital programs, told millions of people their breath stinks, wore Sir Paul McCartney’s top-secret album as a USB necklace, and somewhat-accidentally became the “voice of Diet Coke”. She’s a strategy groupie, a constant problem solver, proud mentor, a complicit ally to all, a forever-island kid (hashtag#PuertoRicoSeLevanta), and she’s on a mission to decolonize advertising. 🗓️ Friday, September 27th at 8:30-10am 📍 ⭐ In-Person Only ⭐ at Adler University - 17 N. Dearborn Street, Chicago, IL 60602 🎵 DJ Mike Caliber 🎟️ Registration Opens next Friday, September 20th at 9am. Mark your calendars! Tickets go first come, first served. Tomorrow is Friday and there’s a Creative Mornings, which make it an extremely good Friday! Join us at TEKSystems as Ryan Duggan chimes in on our weird series. But first, take a peek at the Q&A with Duggan below ! Bonus points if you tweet us your favorite concert poster designed the Chicago-based artist!
Tumblr media
Define “weird” in one sentence or less.
More interesting than “normal."
What drives your desire to create?
My desire to eat. I also physically need to work or make something on a regular basis or I fall apart.
How does Chicago influence you or your work?
I love this city and I like to think it definitely influences my work and specifically my sense of humor. The work ethic of this town is really impressive and you really have to grind to make things happen here. It’s an ‘unpolished metropolis’ and I wouldn’t change that for anything.
List three words that begin with the letter “w” to describe your personality.
Working-class Willy Wonka.

Spring is officially here! Help us kick off the season with Dawn Hancock, a troublemaker, a bleeding heart, a designer by trade and a do-gooder by choice. She will be chiming in our risk series. Get to know her a bit better below and join us next Friday, 4/29 at Morningstar! Tickets get released here on Monday, 4/25 at 11am.
What are three things you love about working in the Humboldt Park neighborhood?
I love being part of a community with a rich history, culture and people. Our nonprofit arm, Reason to Give, has been focused on helping the needs of the community over the last 9 years, so I have gotten to know a lot of the people who live here. The more people I meet, the more I love being part of it.
What drives your desire to create?
Helping people. I feel like that is what I am on this planet to do.
How does Chicago influence you or your work?
Born, raised and schooled here, I’m a midwesterner and Chicagoan through and through. I absolutely love being able to work with clients to help make our city better. From helping small business take their organizations to a new level to giving nonprofits a voice and visual language they always knew was in them but didn’t know how to express, I feel insanely lucky to be able to help our great city become even better, one collaboration at a time.
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Vanilla. Plain + simple.
List three words that begin with the letter “R” to describe your personality!
R.1 — real R.2 — reserved R.3 — resilient
What does this month’s theme – risk– mean to you?
Risk feels like a dirty word. Like something you’re not supposed to do or feel. I say fuck that. Risk is something that should be embraced. Something that, one way or another, you learn from. The fear that most people feel that comes with risk prevents them following their hearts. Lets get rid of it. Lets think more like Brené Brown and open ourselves to being vulnerable and true and courageous. That’s where all the power is.

CRB: Change is the only thing we live for!
What drives your desire to create?
CRB: I like to think about how much better I can make things for people.
How does Chicago influence you or your work?
CRB: Chicago is my home. I am continually fascinated by living in the second city.
What is your dream creative project?
CRB: All projects! It can be anything that makes life better, is exciting and memorable.
List three words that begin with the letter “c” to describe your personality!
CRB: Creative, Centered, Counter-intuitive.
What does this month’s theme – change– mean to you?
CRB: The Future!

Next up: Tim Seeley, one of those “slash” people…a writer-slash-artist, chimes in on our Ethics series . He and 4 others founded Four Star Studios when they decided they were tired of working from home and rented an office together just to get out of the house. It didn’t take long for them to realize they had significant art, writing, design and programming talent gathered under one roof. You can find Tim in Chicago, where he is never far from his 80s action figure collection. Luckily, we have Tim for a whole two hours on Friday, Feb. 26. Ditch your morning meetings and join us at Onion Productions! Whataya say?
Triple high five!

A Big Thank You to Our Sponsors: Braintree and Basecamp
We hope everyone is looking forward to our event tomorrow. It's going to be a great one! Each month our events are supported by very generous sponsors, but this month we have two! So we want to say a big thank you to both Braintree and Basecamp for all their continuous support.
For those of you who don't know already, Braintree allows you to easily accept payments in your app or website, and they power payments for awesome companies like Uber, AirBnB, and Basecamp. Braintree was born right here in Chicago and now has offices all over the world, including New York, London, and San Francisco. And...they are hiring Product Designers! They are looking for self-directed Product Designers comfortable working in a process-light environment. Their design team cares just as much about how their product works as how it looks, and they ship often and iterate until it’s perfect. If you think you’d be a good fit you should apply! Take a look at more details here and check out their space in the picture below.
Tumblr media
Next up, Basecamp! Oh what would be do without Basecamp? This handy project management tool has become a part of our daily lives—and how CreativeMornings Headquarters is able to manage over 70 chapters! Here in Chicago, we use it to organize all of our events. It’s incredibly easy to use, reliable and keeps everything in one place. Basecamp has recently partnered with our team to serve as a continuous sponsor for our event and we couldn't be more grateful. So here a couple things they have been up to lately!
Their latest story from The Distance (a blog featuring stories about hard-working, long-lasting businesses and the people behind them) is about Band for Today, a school music program for schools that don’t have their own in house. They have also recently rolled out a couple of new Basecamp features that everyone should check out. The first is moving a single to-do list across projects, and the second, is attaching files directly to to-dos. Finally, take a look at their snazzy office space!
Tumblr media
Well we hope to see you all at this month's event, and if for some reason you were not able to get a spot (those tickets go so fast) please feel free to join the waitlist. See you in the morning!

The video was concepted and directed by Ben, and made with the help of Eduardo Vea (aka NosE) and friends. Who's that adorable voice you ask? It's Matthew Hoffman's 6-year-old son, Dylan.
