Un tribunale distrettuale degli Stati Uniti ha emesso martedì una sentenza che minaccia nuovamente il principio della libertà di stampa e il diritto dei cittadini di conoscere i crimini commessi dal proprio governo. Il 33enne ex analista dell’intelligence militare, Daniel Hale, è stato infatti condannato a quasi quattro anni di carcere con l’accusa di avere passato alla stampa documenti riservati sul programma di assassini operati con velivoli senza pilota (droni) durante la presidenza Obama. In pratica gente seduta davanti un computer a migliaia di km di distanza, che uccide persone semplicemente schiacciando un pulsante, come in un videogioco, ma dove i morti ammazzati sono veri, anche se gli assassini non possono sentire l’olezzo della carne bruciata o le strazianti grida di dolore dei sopravvissuti. Hale è stato accusato dall'Espionage Act per aver divulgato documenti nel 2015 che mostravano i costi civili del programma di assassinio dei droni militari statunitensi in Afghanistan, Somalia e Yemen. Ben lontano da essere un crimine, il gesto di Daniel Hale permise di conoscere alcuni dettagli esplosivi di un programma di assassini mirati che l’amministrazione Obama aveva intensificato enormemente soprattutto in paesi come Afghanistan, Pakistan e Yemen. La nuova strategia dell’allora presidente democratico era stata propagandata come una svolta nella “guerra al terrore”, in grado di superare gli eccessi del suo predecessore, mentre la verità era che Obama continuava sulla stessa linea se non peggio. Tra le altre rivelazioni pubblicate da The Intercept grazie a Daniel Hale c’era in primo luogo quella che dimostrava l’esistenza di un vero e proprio elenco segreto di bersagli da eliminare “extragiudiziariamente” con i droni. Inoltre, il materiale riservato dimostrava che, nonostante la pretesa ufficiale dell’amministrazione Obama di utilizzare un programma di bombardamenti mirati con precisione “chirurgica”, circa il 90% delle vittime dei droni erano civili che non facevano parte della lista degli obiettivi da colpire . ′′Con la guerra dei droni, a volte nove persone su 10 sono innocenti," ha detto Hale martedì durante la sua udienza. In una lettera al giudice del processo Hale si chiedeva come “si possa credere ancora che per proteggere gli Stati Uniti sia necessario uccidere persone [in Afghanistan] che non hanno avuto nessuna responsabilità negli attacchi dell’11 settembre [2001]. Le operazioni di drone degli Stati Uniti all'estero hanno ucciso fino a 17,000 persone dal 2004, tra cui 2,200 bambini. Ma secondo i documenti divulgati di Hale, questi numeri ufficiali sono inferiori a quelli che sono in realtà, data la tendenza dell'esercito statunitense a etichettare con tragica superficialità le persone come “nemici uccisi in azione” senza che vi fosse nessuna evidenza della cosa.
