Continuing my chronological series of work completed during the pandemic: On July 20th, I hopped on a boat and headed out for a five-day shoot on Smith Island, a remote spot at the south end of Maryland in middle of the Chesapeake Bay, along with the help of fellow photographer @hannelelahti. We were headed to this unique spot for Matchcoat Sojourner, a heritage foodway tour company that provides authentic experiences on the Eastern Shore. In the pandemic, @matchcoatsojourner is retooling its tours from group experiences to a new focus on couples and solo travelers, and needed new imagery to reflect this change. One of our first stops was @smithislandbeans, an amazing artisan coffee roaster run by one of the nicest and most engaging people I've photographed. A New Yorker so dedicated to the perfect cup of coffee he decided he had to roast his own, Aram fell in love with the island after a visit and left his law degree behind to move out here and open a bird sanctuary. These shots were lit with my @profotousa B1 and A1 strobes, and were swapped out with my @hivelighting lights for the video - I love that they have the same size so I can maintain consistency with the same modeifiers. We had a light outside the window, one inside in a softbox with a grid, and one bounced for fill. Last year while driving home from a Virginia food & wine themed road trip, we decided to form a last-minute detour to Chatham Vineyards, Virginia’s only Eastern Shore vineyard before heading home. We also decided that we’d do a touch exploring on the way. Anytime we saw a symbol we felt like following, we did. Did it take for much longer to urge home? Yes. Did we discover some pretty cool places off the beaten path that we probably never would have known about otherwise? Absolutely. That’s how we found a touch hidden gem called Cape Charles.
Located on the southern end of Virginia’s Eastern Shore on the Chesapeake Bay side of the peninsula, Cape Charles is one among America’s coziest little beach towns. There are not any mysterious wild ponies here like in Chincoteague or any of the flashy or touristy boardwalks you would possibly find in Virginia Beach. But what you'll find here may be a charming and historic laid back small-town vibe with sweet little shops, great food, kind people and a gorgeous (and quiet) public Chesapeake Bay Beach with free parking and calm, clear waters that you simply can wade out dozens of yards from shore and still be waist-deep. Adjacent to the beach may be a fishing pier perfect for bringing in some fresh catch or taking in of Cape Charles’s spectacular Chesapeake Bay sunsets. And you actually can’t leave Cape Charles without snapping a couple of pics or selfies ahead of their iconic “LOVE” sign sitting at the doorway of the pier, one among 180 public “LOVE” artworks across Virginia.

Luckily all the town experienced was some early morning wind and rain.

There are many lovely B&Bs and vacation rentals in Cape Charles. except for the right spot within the center of downtown, yet walking distance to the beach, we stayed at the Hotel Cape Charles. one among only two hotels in town, this 101-year-old boutique hotel with an unbeatable location seamlessly blends into the tapestry of Cape Charles’ downtown and therefore the fabric of this very town. They also offer guests a light-weight complimentary breakfast, featuring organic, homemade granola and a few light fare and food for purchase.
At night we recommend unwinding on the third-floor veranda with gorgeous views of the town with a glass or bottle of wine from the hotel’s list. If you’re in town and need to require a swim when the weather is warm, guests may purchase each day pass for the Bay Creek Beach Club only 2 miles from the Hotel which has two outdoor pools and an outsized fitness center. On each day you only want to explore Cape Charles, a couple of steps in any direction from the hotel entrance and there are great places to dine, shop and galleries to browse.
A 5-minute walk will land you at Cape Charles’s main attraction – the beach and fishing pier. For those that love a motorcycle ride, the hotel has six cruisers available for guests on a primary-come first-serve basis. except for something a touch extra, the hotel also will secure you a golf cart to urge around town. does one need to if you've got a car? Probably not. But it’s THE thanks to getting around Cape Charles. And is it a blast? Totally. While in town I happen to ascertain my cousin and her husband driving by on one returning from the beach as I used to be packing up the car to go away. You probably wouldn’t expect to seek out super authentic, hand-crafted, farm to table style Northern Italian during a small beach town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. But in Cape Charles, you can. Ambrogio is open for lunch and dinner and also does a coffee and biscotti hour within the morning starting at 10:30 with a number of the simplest espresso, doppio, cappuccino, and macchiato for miles made with a true Italian coffee machine. If you’re visiting just note the menu can change on a dime counting on what’s fresh, available or counting on what Cristina and Maria desire whipping up. Just the way they are doing in Italy.

For our second day in Cape Charles, the looming possibility of a hurricane headed our way caused many of the companies and restaurants to shutter for the day. So when lunch called and that we got word at our hotel The Shanty was braving the storm and that I didn’t need to eat leftover pretzel bits and protein bars out of rock bottom of my bag we headed right over. The Shanty in Cape Charles isn't a shanty but a contemporary restaurant and bar inspired by all those dockside shacks you’ve ever eaten at that have unbeatable water views and fresh delicious seafood.
I live for those sorts of places and no I don’t care if the floors are crooked and nothing’s been changed in ages. But if you’re not into hole-in-the-wall sort of places like me, don’t worry because The Shanty is very charming during a modern seaside – built to code quite way. The menu here is made around sustainable seafood, local ingredients, and familiar dishes with creative twists. We ordered their crispy conch fritters, creamy New England chowder like cheesy potato soup with fresh clams (scrumptious), and their Yucatan Style Tacos with shrimp. We enjoyed every bite.
Voted one among the “Top 25 Bars within the U.S.” by Men’s Journal, The Shanty features a few differing types of drink menus with martinis, crushes, margaritas, signature drinks, tropically inspired cocktails also as a spread of craft beers and wine. The Shanty is found just south of Cape Charles’s main downtown on the opposite side of the railroad tracks within the Cape Charles town marina. By foot you'll stroll over if you’re downtown, I like to recommend punching it into your GPS if driving which can take you on a special route and maybe a touch confusing for a primary outing of towner.

If the thought of eating fresh oysters, clams, and incredible seafood while overlooking the serene blue water cove where those very oysters have grown sounds pretty amazing, then The Oyster Farm Seafood Eatery at Kings Creek must be a requirement on your Cape Charles to-do list. Located on a shocking 39-acre waterfront property complete with a marina, event center and luxury villas for rent, The Oyster Farm Eatery may be a large, airy and maybe a casually stylish bayside seafood restaurant, raw bar and barroom adorned with an ornate bar and impressive fish tanks. The chefs here call the food “water to the table,” and therefore the code on their website says it’s sandals to ties. Gotta love a shore town.
Cape Charles Oyster Farm Just a few minutes drive north of downtown, we headed to The Oyster Farm on our first night in Cape Charles. On an actual oyster farm, you can’t leave without trying some oysters. It just wouldn’t be right. With some wonderful suggestions from our super friendly waiter Mike, we settled on the oysters Rockefeller to start made with a house recipe of crispy bacon, kale rather than the standard spinach, slightly of cream and Parmesan. We were floored at unbelievably juicy and flavorful they tasted. Total score. Mike also suggested we try one among their hottest appetizers, the Thai Shrimp Salad. An explosion of fresh flavor and texture, fried shrimp are tossed with bell peppers, cabbage, scallions, and cilantro during a Thai condiment that's salty, sour, sweet beat one. Amazing. For mains, we moved onto a crisp and creamy Caesar salad topped with their own crispy fried oysters and perfectly Seared Scallops served over creamy risotto.
To wash it down we stayed local and paired it with Church Creek Chardonnay from Chatham Vineyards. For dessert, we dug into a delicious custard then got able to roll back to the hotel. Everything at the Oyster Farm was deliciously on point and that I anticipate returning return. The Oyster Farm Eatery has indoor and outdoor patio seating and if you've got the prospect, plan your visit so you'll catch stunning Chesapeake Bay sunsets. Great views, great food, and great service. What more are you able to ask for?

While the brick and mortar bakery located within the Strawberry Street Plaza Shops on Mason Avenue may be a recent addition to Cape Charles, owner Louise Orlando who runs the shop together with her husband Andrew has been perfecting the art of bread making for years. and therefore the love she puts into her bread-making shows. I first tasted Louise’s bread while visiting Chatham Vineyards last year where they serve her custom vineyard flavor baked with their own Church Creek Cabernet Franc, cranberries and walnuts which with their cheeseboard. That bread stuck in my mind ever since. sometime past Louise was baking out of her home and selling at farmer’s markets and native shops. When the bread business began taking up her home that she realized she needed a fanatical space. Fast forward to today and you've got the Bakery on Mason.
Not only is everything at the Bakery On Mason made up of 100% scratch with simple ingredients, but every sourdough loaf here is fermented with an Eastern Shore born wild yeast starter that Louise has lovingly cultivated and attended for nearly 10 years. The result's a stunning crumb with a satisfying bite and chewy crust. If you’re trying to find something on the sweet side they even have pastries, muffins, scones and croissants which have something of a cult following. Wash it all down with some freshly brewed locally roasted coffee. If you’re within the area and wish lunch on the go, choose one among their gourmet sandwiches built on their mini French baguettes. Try the Cape Charles – layered with thinly sliced Edwards country ham, Parmesan-Asiago, fresh and peppery arugula, and finished with their creamy house dressing that features a nice kick.

There’s something pretty darn cool about eating during a historic repurposed space. And with 16-foot tin ceilings, a bar crafted from locally sourced 100-year-old yellow pine, and exposed brick walls, Kelly’s Gingernut Irish Pub located during a converted circa 1907 bank doesn’t disappoint. Oh, and did I mention you'll even eat inside an old vault. How cool is that?
Cape Charles Kellys With attention on what’s fresh and native and a menu that changes seasonally, Kelly’s Gingernut serves up soul-warming Irish and American pub fare like burgers, steaks, local fresh seafood, salads, an award-winning she-crab soup, along with side craft beers and wine. and therefore the food here didn’t disappoint once we stopped certain a late dinner by candlelight within the vault. Anywhere it’s perfectly acceptable and truly encouraged to ride around during a golf cart may be a place I’m excited to be. And Cape Charles is one among those places. While downtown Cape Charles is walkable, driving around during a golf cart is simply darn fun and an excellent thanks to admiring the gorgeous homes within the historic district, get around town and have a ride back from the beach without having to urge buckets of sand in your seat. It’s also just plain fun! When you’re in town pop over to CC Ryder Rentals, a brief walk from the beach and downtown area. If you would like any recommendations on the world, check-in with Smitty the owner and he’ll steer you within the right direction. The rates are super reasonable and any time on a golf cart may be a blast.

Beaches and great books go together just like the sea and therefore the sand. And in Cape Charles, you’ll find quite possibly the cutest, if not the foremost unique book store on the East Coast. Located on the corner of Mason and Peach Street, Peach Street Books is one part book store and one part cafe. If you’re thinking a bookstore with coffee is nothing new you’d be right. But this one’s located during a renovated storybook cottage looking 1930’s Pure Oil gasoline station with a late 1950’s garage that’s attached and also restored, but with a contemporary vibe. Somehow its whimsical architecture works, and with over 500 new titles and over 10,000 gently used books, anyone on the look for their next great read are going to be in their glory. After you’ve grabbed all the books you'll handle, grab a bagel, some food or snacks, a house-made smoothie or a cup of java made with local Eastern Shore Coastal Roasting Company coffee. Cape Charles has some great boutiques if you are feeling more within the mood for retail therapy than dipping your toes within the sand. If you've got a way of humor and love finding unique and quirky gifts instead of the standard sorts of souvenirs you always find by the shore, then make certain to pop inside. There are all types of fun things inside from card and board games to kitchen linens and candles with witty quotes and much of unique gifts. If you’re squeamish (you know who you are) this might not be the shop for you. But if you don’t take life too seriously and love quirky witty things that you simply won’t find anywhere else, then breeze on in to love A Sailor. The giggles are freed from charge.

There’s a chance you may not know what Old Bay Seasoning is—especially if you don’t hail from the east coast. See, the Maryland-born spice is one of the most versatile spice blends out there that is primarily known for jazzing up seafood. After all, it is named after a ship line on the Chesapeake Bay. The spice blend dates back to 1939 after a German refugee and spice merchant in Europe named Gustav Brunn fled to Baltimore, Maryland. Then, in 1990, McCormick & Company bought the spice, which led to nationwide distribution. The original recipe—which is still the recipe used today—contains 18 spices, but one glance at the label will show that only five official ingredients are listed: celery salt, paprika, red pepper, black pepper, and…”spices.” Who knows what that combination of spices could actually be? It’s still a tantalizing secret, but we asked a chef to share how you could make your own copycat version at home!
To give us a bit more clarity on what all could be in the seasoning, as well as how you can use it, we called on the head chef of Hello Fresh, Claudia Sidoti.
What is in Old Bay Seasoning?
There are many homemade and DIY versions of Old Bay recipes around the internet, so Sidoti gave us her own idea of how to make your own copycat version. “Celery salt, black pepper, dry mustard, mace and/or cinnamon, crushed red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper, and paprika,” says Sidoti. OK, so that gives us a little more context of all of the flavors that are swirled into this savory blend. Mystery solved!

What are some creative ways to use Old Bay seasoning?
We asked Sidoti to provide a list of foods and even a cocktail that pairs well with the seasoning, and don’t worry, she made it clear that there really isn’t such a thing as too much seasoning.
“The amount used varies depending on the recipe and the volume, but I recommend using it assertively to get maximum flavor,” advises Sidoti. “If you’re unsure, taste as you go and add more as desired. There are so many uses for Old Bay Seasoning!”
Spice up a Bloody Mary.
Add a pinch to chowders.
Toss it into fresh popcorn.
Sprinkle it on freshly baked crinkle fries.
Add some to your potatoes, whether they’re roasted or mashed.
Stir it into cream cheese for a unique take on the spread.
Sprinkle over deviled eggs, scrambled eggs, and omelets.
Sprinkle it over fried shrimp, or mix it into mayonnaise or aioli.
If you’re baking chicken wings, sprinkle some on before putting them in the oven.
Serve it with grilled corn on the cob.
Use it to amp up summer potato, chicken, or pasta salads.
There is always the traditional use, too, which is an old-fashioned crab or shrimp boil.

Like superheroes, many beloved dishes, desserts, and drinks have interesting, stupefying, and sometimes even controversial origin stories.

Given its name, it’s perfectly understandable one might assume the king of the salad section hails from ancient Rome. And while an Italian did create what the International Society of Epicure once named the greatest recipe to originate in the Americas in the last half-century, romaine lettuce stalks, olive oil, raw egg, croutons, parmesan cheese, and Worcestershire sauce were first tossed together in Baja California’s Caesar’s Restaurant. According to Food & Wine, Caesar Cardini moved to North America in the 1910s, opening restaurants in Sacramento and San Diego, before making a run for the border town of Tijuana, Mexico, which was experiencing a tourism boom in the 1920s thanks to prohibition. Legend has it that his Avenida Revolución eatery was overrun with thirsty tourists and running low on supplies on July 4, 1924, when he took what was left and attempted to make a finger food tableside. Some claim it was his brother Alessandro who invented it while others say he was only responsible for adding anchovies. Another theory: Italian immigrant/employee Livio Santini based it on his mama’s recipe, but Cardini took credit for the instant hit. French dip sandwich: Los Angeles

A war has long waged in the streets of downtown Los Angeles between two longtime (and still-operating) diners, Philippe’s and Cole’s, regarding who fathered the French dip sandwich. When stacked up, most concrete evidence points to the former although various owners have disagreed on specifics over the years. A 1951 Los Angeles Times’ interview with the original 1908 owner Philippe Mathieu finds the French-born cook explaining that he created the wet roast beef sandwich on a lark for a counter regular who saw the jus in the pan. The restaurant’s website argues that the creation was a result of Mathieu accidentally dropping the French roll from a policeman’s order into the roasting pan still filled with hot juices in 1918. The cop ate it anyway, came back for more, and brought friends who also wanted to sample the meaty mishap. Other accounts involve a fireman, pork, a stale roll, and 1917. Thrillist argues that the name supports Mathieu’s claim given that he was from France and might also be a double entendre meant to be funny as it shared its name with a waistline type said to make the wearer appear thinner that was becoming trendy. Cole’s, whose sign still declares them the titleholder in neon, argues that they invented it by accident in 1908, but no printed mentions support the German owner’s claim until after Philippe’s reputation had blossomed.
Bloody Mary: New York City

Seems appropriate that one of the most popular brunch beverages was first poured in The City That Never Sleeps. In 1934, Serge Obolensky, an aristocratic Russian man about town, waltzed into the King Cole Bar at the St. Regis New York and asked bartender Fernand Petiot to pour him a Bloody Mary. He’d sampled an early version of Petiot’s vodka and tomato juice cocktail at Paris’s La Maisonette Russe where the mixologist previously worked. Petiot perfected a zestier recipe that day adding salt, pepper, lemon, and Worcestershire sauce. The moniker was deemed too unrefined for the hotel’s elegant clientele, so it was rechristened Red Snapper. Today, imbibers can partake in Petiot’s piece de résistance under the same 1906 Maxfield Parrish mural. Or they can walk into any St. Regis and try a local spin on the libation, now the brand’s signature cocktail. For example, the St. Regis in Abu Dhabi adds smoke and za’atar as a nod to hookah lounges, Punta Mita’s makes it with tequila and Mexican Maggi sauce, and the Washington, D.C., branch starts with gin and incorporates horseradish, clam juice, and Old Bay Seasoning to evoke a classic Chesapeake Bay crab boil.

In 1897, carpenter Pearle Wait was mixing a cough remedy and laxative tea in his home kitchen when he started experimenting with gelatin. The result of that tinkering, according to the Jell-O Museum‘s website, was a fruit-flavored dessert whose name was coined by his wife May. Wait tried to market the wiggly treat, lacking funds and experience; he ultimately sold the trademark in 1899 for $450 to fellow LeRoy-ian and successful proprietary medicines manufacturer Orator Frank Woodward. He too gave up and sold it to Sam Nico for $35. The third sale was a charm as the Genesee Pure Food Company started selling Jell-O in 1900 and reported $250,000 in sales in 1902 when the packets were still stuffed by hand and sold from horse-drawn wagons. The first four flavors were orange, lemon, strawberry, and raspberry. Lime was not introduced until 1930. The meteoric rise of J-E-L-L-O was certainly helped by advertising that utilized artists like Norman Rockwell and the aforementioned Parrish and comedian Jack Benny.

Three Blonde Bakers get literal with new 3BB Café next door

The name Three Blonde Bakers was already all but famous along the Bethany Beach boardwalk, whether it be for their scoop selection of Vanderwende Farm Creamery classics or ever-changing array of off-the-wall homemade fudge flavors.
But the now-officially-baking blonde Bakers are no longer just fudging around when it comes to that name being literal, recently launching their latest boardwalk venture with the 3BB Café in the space right next door.
“Cassidy has always wanted to open up her own bakery,” said Brittany Baker of her younger sister and Baker-family baking authority, Cassidy Baker, who learned her trade at Ruthie’s Bakery in Bethany. “When the Orhelein’s [Michael and Hope] told us that they were moving the gallery across the mall, we knew we had to go for it.”
“People would always come up and asked about baked goods, with the name,” added Cassidy Baker with a laugh. “It’s definitely nice to finally have an established bakery now.” While the original 3BB (a.k.a. “3BB OG”) has been able to feature select baked goods since opening up shop on Garfield Parkway in downtown Bethany two summers ago, this summer the 3BB Café will take things to a whole new level with a whole new concept.
Not only will Cassidy Baker heat things up with a full menu of homemade baked goods, ranging from doughnuts and muffins to “cronuts” and “cruffins,” but Brittany Baker will bring her own signature twist to the café with a full menu of specialty coffee and tea drinks and fresh, local, açai bowls as well.
“We still have The ‘OG’ bowl, but now we have a build-your-own section and a bunch of other bowls, too,” explained Brittany Baker, noting that the 3BB Café concept was inspired by her travels to Puerto Rico and time spent working as a barista at Café to Go in Rincon. “This is the kind of thing that I love to do.”
Along with The OG, açai bowl options at 3BB include new additions, such as “The Dragonfruit” with blended pitaya, pineapple, strawberries and coconut water topped with granola, strawberries, chia seeds; “The Pineapple Express,” with blended pitaya, mango and pineapple and passionfruit juice, topped with granola, coconut, and chia seeds; and the house-special “3BB Bowl,” with blended açai, blueberries, mango and passionfruit, and topped with granola, coconut and peanut butter.
The ingredients are coming as fresh and local as possible as well, from local farms, including strawberries from Magee Farms, and blueberries and peaches from Bennett Orchards.
The 3BB Café drink list includes everything from specialty drinks, such as the café con leche, Red-eye and Rincon-inspired Cortado, to lattes, cappuccinos, espresso and macchiatos, to iced and frozen drinks — all made with fair-trade, organic beans from the Chesapeake Bay Roasting Co.
There’s also plenty of specialty tea options available hot, cold or frozen — and, of course, just a good old fashioned cup of regular Joe, too.
“We’re trying to make it as quick and easy as possible for people to come in to grab a coffee on the go,” said Brittany Baker. “Cassidy’s got the latte art down — she can do the ‘3BB’ at the top, she can make hearts and waves, everything.”
As for the baked goods made fresh every morning, options include not only croissants, scones, crumb cakes and cinnamon buns, but also cupcakes, brownies, cake-pops, cookies and more.
“We’re coming in and baking everything that you see, in the morning,” said Brittany Baker. “We already had doughnuts and some things like that, but now we’re really doing it — the cruffins and cronuts have been really popular already.”
There’s also plenty of other on-the-go items, such as local Dutch waffle cookies from the Joost Waffle Co., fresh fruit, jams, granola and breakfast bars, cooler drinks to take back to the beach and even event catering available through their new Baker baked-goods’ catering company, Sea Baked: Salty Sweet Creations.
Despite all the new and name-literal offerings at the new and name-literal 3BB Café, however, all the Three Blonde Bakers’ favorites are still available at the “OG” 3BB right next door, too.
“We’ve just been going with the flow and seeing where this takes us,” said Cassidy Baker. “Everything feels a lot more real now. We’re not rookies anymore.”
The 3BB Café is located at 107 Garfield Parkway in downtown Bethany Beach, right next to Breakers Surf Shop. The shop is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the week and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.

“We want pancakes,” Christina announced on behalf of herself and her son, who occupied her lap at Sunday brunch with Marco’s family, and Stefanie. He refused to sit in the highchair provided for him, or with his dad. He was only interested in sitting on Mommy. Unusually for her, she was fine with that. She didn’t force him to sit where he belonged, or even admonish him for being uncooperative. They scoured the menu together but they were always going to have pancakes. André mentioned pancakes while trying to sell them on the idea of going to brunch, and from that moment on they were set on the pancakes.
“The blueberry ones are to die for,” Zoe claimed. “They do a blueberry and cream cheese spread on top. Sooooo good.” She and Marco took Noah to the New York, New York restaurant for brunch every Sunday when the player was free. It was in a hotel, and both the eatery and the accommodations were billed as “American style”. Christina expected American diner fare. The menu was a bit more sophisticated than that, with trendier, cosmopolitan brunch offerings, and a typical buffet. No American brunch menu could be complete without pancakes though.
“Just pancakes?” André asked, skeptical. Sunday was his last day with her for a month. He didn’t totally want to share her with their friends, but he was still working on his campaign to make her feel at home in her new city and to show her that she could have a social life there outside the barn.
“And a latte, and hashbrowns, and bacon.”
“That’s more like it,” he smiled.
“If my trainer is eating fried starch and bacon, I’m eating it too,” Stefanie chimed in. She closed her menu and set it down on the table. “Buffet for me.”
“Chris, what is a Chesapeake crabcake and do I like it?” The non-injured of the two football players trying to hide from the general public at the corner table intended to embark upon the buffet as well, but was still curious about the a la carte menu.
“It’s like a blob of crab meat, breadcrumbs, and celery held together with egg, mayonnaise, and mustard, and yeah, you’d probably like it. I don’t know where they get Chesapeake Bay crabs from in Germany though,” the always-injured rider explained hesitantly. “Chesapeake Bay is in Maryland.”
“It comes in an eggs Benedict. Should I try?”
“Not if you want my mouth anywhere near yours for the rest of the day.”
“Never mind.”
“Ouch, man,” Marco cringed. “The sting of that whip.”
“He’s not whipped,” his partner argued. “He’s respectful, and smart. If someone wants kisses then he shouldn’t have seafood breath.”
“Thank you,” Christina said with a smile of satisfaction. The potential proximity of her mouth to André’s mattered that day, because Saturday was the day the affection dam finally broke. Holger came over to give her lessons on Rio and Socks, she rode all of the others, and watched him teach Stefanie and Kyle on two horses a piece too. It was a long day at the barn. André was released for international duty immediately following BVB’s win at home on Friday night, so he was off the whole day. He spent some of it watching all the jumping and flatwork outside from the pretty gazebo attached to the jump storage shed between the grass “ring” and the dirt one, with Lukas. The littlest Schü had early dinner while his Papa prepped ingredients to make pan seared filets mignon, a sheet pan of roasted vegetables, and whipped russet and sweet potato “swirl” with garlic and sea salt. Christina was grateful to gimp directly from the front door to a plate of well-cooked, hearty and clean food, which she ate every bite of. And for once that didn’t lead to feeling overfull, because the chef finally learned that her stomach was significantly smaller than his and refrained from overwhelming her plate and tempting her to eat too much just because it was there. As such, the rider suggested a relaxing soak in the Jacuzzi in the round room at the opposite end of the house, without fear of sinking in it like a stone. Neither of them had tried it out yet. It was round and built into the white marble floor, and bigger than the square one they put on their patio in London. Neither of them could figure out why the previous owners of the house put expensive marble in the “spa room” and in the foyer but nowhere else- nowhere more significant. They seemed like the two parts of the house in which the occupants would spend the least amount of time.
Regardless, the Jacuzzi was nice. The jets were just as powerful and the water temperature just as hot. The experience was just as therapeutic as soaking in the one at their old home. They opened one of the many doors to let some fresh air in, and used only the lights on the exterior of the house so that it was dark in the room but not pitch black. Even a bit of moonlight managed to find its way in via the many windows above in the two-story space with the little cone on top. The outside of the round room was indeed round, but the inside wasn’t entirely empty. A corner of the master bedroom stuck out into it, and provided a place for Zoe to install recessed lighting for nights when her clients weren’t looking for the outside-in experience. She put a pair of very plain loungers in there too, and some tropical looking greenery in different sized round, black planters. The attached bathroom included a walk in shower, and was meant to serve the gym across the hall as well as the real pool outside in the yard. It used to have its own old school all-wood sauna but Christina wanted it converted into a closet for pool towels since André had a state of the art steam room upstairs in the master bath.
More importantly than the features of the space, the company was good. Despite all the extra room compared to their previous Jacuzzi, the rider stayed close to her footballer. She was worn out and a bit mentally frazzled from the intensity of her day. With everything else going on, it had become easy to avoid fully realizing the significance of the event for which she was meant to be preparing. Getting down to business with Holger, having someone else’s eye on her, and his opinion, changed the amount of mental effort she put into her riding, and the importance she attached to every little thing. The enormity of the chance to defend her title hit her like a bus. It minimized the significance of all the other hurdles and dramas in her life. It stressed her out, but in a good way. She felt hunger that she never believed was coming, especially since Dirk was ruled out. All of that was tiring, and she sought her Happy Place™ to help wind down, relax, and let go of the day. And Christina was finally ready to look to André to help her do that. He finally earned that privilege back, and boy was he glad he did. His girl wouldn’t leave him alone for a single second in the hot, bubbly water. She wanted every bit of his attention, and there was an awful lot of smooching in his lap. Then there was smooching on the couch. Then smooching in bed, and a whole lot more than smooching.
There was nothing remarkable about sleeping together again for either of them, good or bad, and that was just fine. Regularity meant a return to normal, and confirmed that normal still existed. They wanted normal. Some tremendous emotional high would have just mixed more pressure into their relationship struggles, and confused Christina even more about how she felt, and given André false assurance. Obviously a big low would have disappointed them both equally. So being together again was good, and familiar, and enjoyable, and solidified that some careful work on both of their parts for the previous few days succeeded at least in principle in allowing them to be close and share the sort of connection that had gone missing. That connection verified that what made them want each other was still there, and still the same. For André there was also relief that he could remind his wife of their chemistry before she ran off for her mini holiday with Juan on Tuesday. He knew the Spaniard was trying to talk her into joining him in his home country over the weekend after that too, to celebrate Real Oviedo’s 90-something-year anniversary and special fan day. The matchday was going to be a big party for the club’s huge group of shareholder-supporters, of which Juan and many of his past teammates and friends were a part. He wanted Christina to go to his parents’ with him on Friday night, attend the match, and then fly direct to the US for the World Cup on Sunday morning. Her horses were leaving in the middle of the night on Friday, so he argued that there was no need for her to be home. That wasn’t really true. She had plenty of other horses to ride, and she didn’t want to leave Lukas even earlier than necessary, so it was up in the air. André wanted to do all he could to make her less likely to feel the need to go spend time with her so called new Happy Place™. The near return to the preferred Random Kiss Frequency on Sunday in the lead up to brunch was a sign for him that he was succeeding at that and that her affectionate side didn’t just come out on Saturday because she needed someone to help her de-stress, and he was keen to keep the kisses coming. Seafood breath was out.
“I’m more interested in the sausages and cheeses,” he shrugged.  
“And chocolate croissants?” Christina smiled.
“You say that like you think I’m dying to have one, when in reality you just hope that I am so that you can steal half of it but not feel guilty because you were “just having a bite”.”
She rolled her eyes in dismissal of the accusation and then asked Noah what he was having for breakfast or lunch. Zoe said her nearly three-year-old, as most do, loved the French toast with caramelized bananas and walnuts. Marco said there was so much sugar in the dish that Noah bypassed the typical sugar high and went right to a sugar overdose coma shortly after eating, leading to some chilled out Sunday afternoons on the sofa at their house. He characterized it as “all part of the plan”. Christina wished Lukas had that programming option. He never had sugar comas. He had sugar induced reigns of terror, which was why she was only going to order the blueberry pancakes for herself and just share some with him to go with his scrambled eggs and finger-friendly cold cuts. Once the specialty beverages and the non-buffet food had been ordered, and after said buffet had been picked over in turns to ensure someone was always at the table with the kids, the adults moved on to talking about Dortmund things, and things they could do as double-dates.
Unfortunately, for every “Oh, we should go to blank soon and do blank,” there was the follow up “Yeah, maybe in the future, since we’re unavailable for the next month”. And Christina didn’t really want to go do things with Zoe anyway. She was a fine person to shop and have drinks with during football tournaments, and she was unquestionably good at her job, but working together on the house just showed the rider that the decorator was not Partner In Crime material. Part of the problem was her relationship with Marco, and that type of problem was something she was really familiar with. For much of her life she had friendships with guys that were complicated with the addition of girlfriends, and usually not in a good way. It was hard for her to get along with the girlfriends of her guy friends, especially if she met the guy before the girl. Christina wanted to hang out with Marco, not Zoe. She wanted to go out with André and Marco and their friends and experience those friendships the way she did before there was a Zoe- before she was expected to socialize with the other girls while the guys did their thing, before Marco had another person to pay attention to, and before there was a girlfriend for her to worry about offending with her interactions with the guys. She was sure she’d eventually have similar problems with Mario and Stefanie. Mario was spending some time with his family in Munich while doctors tried to figure out what to do for his heath problems, and it was already decided that he was out for the season.
“Full?” André asked her as a consequence of the long sigh she let out after putting her fork down. Everyone else at the table was talking about music artists whose tours would come through Düsseldorf in the near future. The ex-Chelsea man was already finished eating. It took his wife longer to eat her meal because she had to help Lukas eat his too.
“Not really. I’m just tired,” she admitted. “Out of nowhere.” She was apologetic because they had plans for the rest of the day. Each family had a Range Rover packed with toys and balls to play with at the park, and before they got to those they were supposed to check out the indoor plants at the park’s botanical garden. The sun was out, and it wasn’t so cold. Christina and her family were supposed to finally do something besides play and rest at home, and that was what she’d been asking for when she complained about being bored and suffering from a bit of cabin fever. Maybe I’m having the sugar coma thing, she thought, suddenly feeling fatigued and drained, and not just because she had to socialize with a bunch of people.
“You had a long day yesterday,” André commented with sympathy. That response alone was a sign of major progress. As little as a week earlier, he could have been expected to frown and snap sarcastically at her for claiming to be tired when he wanted to do things with her and their friends, as if he assumed she just didn’t want to be around him and was using it as an excuse. That sympathy and understanding he displayed instead was all the rider was looking for in her quest to figure out if they even “liked” each other anymore. She liked when a boy could look at her and know from her face and know from his familiarity with her daily goings-on that she was authentically worn out and trying her best not to succumb to her body and mind’s efforts to tell her to rest. That mattered to her. She didn’t want to be with anybody who couldn’t figure that out and then respond with compassion instead of taking it as some kind of personal slight.
“It shouldn’t have felt so long though. If I’m tired today it’s because all my other days have been too lazy. Yesterday should have been the standard amount of work and effort really.” Christina wrinkled her nose and absently rubbed Lukas’ head to her left, without even looking at him. He was taking small bites from a skinny sausage. The blueberry pancakes were a big hit with him too, but he was far more interested in the slightly older little boy sitting next to him. They shared their food and their action figures.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself, pretty girl. Give some credit for knowing you needed to get your trainer in for a tune-up- for getting the kick up the backside that maybe you needed. That counts.”
“I guess,” she yawned. Should I get another coffee, she considered as she eyed the player’s tea. It might help me stay awake but it would probably also make me not feel very good. Or I could just do a Lulu Schü and tip over on Big Schü and immediately fall asleep. Her heavy eyelids were more worrisome to her than her regrets about her most recent preparation routine. There was disappointment there, in herself, but not on a dramatic level. There was a litany of excuses available to explain why her standards had perhaps lapsed.
“Do you want to go home after this?”
“Nooo, you have the whole day planned and everything. I’m a big girl. I can make it. I just need another latte.”
“My plan for the whole day is to chill with you and Mausi. We can do that at home. Do you want to get in one of your cashmere blankies on the couch and watch us play until we’re tired too and have to get in your blanky?” André kind of wanted her to say yes. He kind of wanted to spend the day with just them.
“We can’t bail.” His girl lowered her voice even more and nodded toward their friends, who had been inviting them for Sunday Funday every weekend in recent memory. Their continued refusal was bordering on rude. Christina also really wanted Lukas and Noah to be pals.
They kept to the plan. Stefanie went to the barn after everyone was finished eating, and the rest went to the botanical garden. The girls and the kids enjoyed that more than the guys. The tables were turned on them after, in the park. Two professional footballers were prepared to play keep away from their Mini Me sons with a half-size ball until the kids gave up in frustration and exhaustion. It was almost cruel to watch. The little ones didn’t have a prayer of ever getting the ball off their dads, and their dads were getting so competitive with each other that Zoe had to remind Marco he was hurt and supposed to be recovering. Zoe also got bored while they played. Conversation between the girls fizzled when they exhausted all available ways to express knowing lamentation about their partners torturing the little boys. Christina couldn’t really think of anything else to talk about, or to pretend to care about, and just watching the game quietly was fine with her. The other girl took out her iPad and got into “work stuff”. That was fine with Christina too. She took her phone out to talk to the boy who was missing from her Sunday Funday.
“2 more sleeps,” she wrote to him, knowing or at least hoping that her message would inspire the same kind of butterfly wing flap that happened to her when she got one like that. Just because things were getting better with André didn’t mean she didn’t still miss Juan. She still felt the same about him. She still craved the peace she experienced with him, and the contentedness. There were less significant things to miss too, like his smile, and his laugh, and the softness of his fingertips. His ex-girlfriend longed for the whole package. Being closer with André was only a distraction from the sensation of missing someone who helped make her feel whole, not a detraction. It was possible once again to want to go home and share a blanky with the German and to also want to study the water in the distance from the comfort of the Spaniard’s beach house bed.

Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company: Lighthouse Blend

Since starting this blog, I have gone from trying any company to being the snobby kind of person who only tries certain roasters. Its not necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes it can lead me to avoiding roasters that may not look like much or even look good and actually having good coffee in the end.
Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company might have landed as being one of those companies. I received an email awhile back asking me to try some of their coffe. Normally I delete these emails if they haven't already been sent to spam, but I felt giving and accepted.
I received two cans of coffee, one being Lighthouse Blend which I'll be reviewing today and another which was a dark roast that I backed out of. I do not like dark roasts and am very reluctant to even review them. I also can't ensure that I won't come into the review with a clear head either.
So, without further adue, I give you Lighthouse Blend...

Aroma is mild with notes of spice, chocolate, and a touch of citrus. Its hard to distinguish exactly what the citrus note is, but its definitely citrusy.
Each sip is smooth and light tasting with notes of chocolate, a light citrus acidity, and a spice on the backend on my tongue. Overall clean cup with a chocolate/molasses like sweetness which builds up and lingers on my tongue for a bit.
A vibrant blend of USDA certified organic coffees from Central and South America, accented by the distinct nuances of East African beans. Verdict
I found this coffee didn't do so well in other brewing methods. The Aeropress seemed to handle this coffee best and kept it vibrant and clear unlike the Clever and Woodneck which I couldn't seem to dial in to bring out anything other than a muted cup.
Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot going on along with the fact that its is very hard to distinguish this citrus play, but all in all I wouldn't call this coffee a letdown. I found myself enjoying it more than I expected myself to.
