Jason Todd x Harper reader pt 2

Warning: Cursing

Word count: 2768

The flight to Gotham was long and loud. You sat in front of a kid probably only six years old. He was determined to drive you crazy the entire flight while Jason sat next to you reading a book peacefully while the annoying mother behind him did nothing to stop her kid from kicking the back of your seat. To be fair you were used to first-class, anytime you did go on a public plain it was with Oliver's money and Oli paid for the best. No squirly brats in first class. When flight 401 finally landed you hauled ass out of there, grabbing your suitcase, you dragged Jason out and away from that little devil.

You had never actually been to Gotham City, and it surely lived up to its reputation. It was the middle of summer and dark clouds covered the sky making your bare arms collect goosebumps. Jason signaled a cab and you both got in. You gave the taxi man the address to one of Oliver's apartments before Jason could say his. Maybe you agreed to see Roy but you didn't agree to stay with him. Jason just huffed and looked out the window till you arrived.

When you finally did the hotel staff were weary to let you stay in Oliver Queens penthouse apartment but after you practically shoved evidence of him being your legal parent down their throat you where let in. It definitely had nothing to do with Jason name dropping his father none whatsoever.

After the debacle downstairs you unlocked the door with a crisp swipe and pushed the door open revealing a beautiful view of what you thought was an ugly city.

"Its a lot better looking from up here." You had almost forgotten Jason was with you till he spoke.

You nodded still entranced by the large buildings going on for miles, "Yeah definitely."

You both shuffled fully into the apartment, heading straight for the bedroom and flopping on the bed. Jason didn't follow you in, however. That gave you alone time to unpack your suitcase. When you went to the living room to join him he was still looking out the window that made up the living room wall. You stood by his side looking out with him.

He pointed off to a corner, "That is where the knights are going to kick your Spartans ass tomorrow."

"Ugh, you wish!"

"The Spartans haven't beat the Knights all season."

"Just wait, Jason, I have confidence in my boys."

"How much?" he asks with a sly smirk.

"What do you mean?"

"Are you willing to bet on it."

You laugh, "I'm not betting you, Jason."

"I thought you had confidence," he mimics.

"Fine!" you agree.

"Looser has to wear the other team's jersey for a day."

"What! Hell no I will never put your ugly black and grey colors on."

"If you are so sure they will win then you won't have to." he counters.

"Deal."

Shaking hands you seal it. The Spartans better win you can't even fathom the thought of anyone from Star hearing about you wearing a Knights jersey. You shiver just thinking about it.

Jason leaves you to get settled in saying He and Roy will pick you up for the game at noon tomorrow. It will be weird hanging out with Roy all day after you blew up on him but at least you will have another Spartans fan with you. You decide to order pizza for dinner and just chill on the couch. You sent some quick texts to Oliver and Connor letting them know you arrived safe and sound in Gotham. You even gave Connor a full rundown of the child from hell on your flight.

When you told him you're about your wager with Jason he made you promise to not "Waist your hard-earned money" on "cursed" merchandise from "that hell hole they call a city." you laughed at him but his dead silence over the phone made you think he was being serious.

You ended the call when the pizza arrived. You took the whole box to the couch and turned on the TV to watch the office. It was 11 o'clock when you saw Gotham's famed heroes on the rooftop ahead of you. All the lights were on in the room since you changed it from your lighthearted comedy to the Conjuring. You weren't an idiot about to watch scary movies in the dark in a place you never been before. No, you were smart. You turned the lights on. Because that was so much better.

You figured they could see into your apartment and since you saw Red hood their you decided to waive. He waved back along with a shorter man in black and blue next to him. They departed soon after and you decided to hit the hay so you could get a good nights sleep before tomorrow.

When you woke up you were somewhat startled when you noticed you weren't in your room back at home. You crawled out of bed taking a quick shower before trudging into the kitchen to order some breakfast. Scanning over the room service menu you spotted y/f/f and called it in as quick as possible. You decided that you were going to wear all your Spartans gear for the game today just to piss of Jason. Thankfully your team is red and black unlike Gothams ugly black and grey wich you now see fits them.

Throwing off your towel you pull on some black leggings, for Gotham's cold weather you throw a black hoodie on and button your red jersey over it. You decide to even wear your red baseball socks and pull them over the bottom of your leggings and throw on some black PF flyers. You laugh at your over the top outfit in the mirror and send a quick pick of it to Conner who salutes you in return.

Roomservice arrives just in time and you open the door to collect your food. The busser scrunched his nose at the sight of your outfit and pushes it into your room. "I don't think you want to wear that around here you might get shot."

You laugh for a second and he looks at you seriously, "You are joking right."

"Well," He thinks to himself, "I think that's more likely to happen to a meteors fan," he shrugs.

You nod your head before sending him out. You quickly scarf up your food before Jason and Roy arrive.

It is exactly 11:59 when Jason texts you that he is outside. The thing is you can't recall ever getting his phone number. You shrug it off and make your way downstairs. You try to ignore the looks Gothamites give you as you prance down the hall. Its all a ton of glares until on short kid with a camera draped around his next shouts "Is that y/n Queen!"

You roll your eyes glaring at him "Harper! h-a-r-p-e-r I'm not a queen."

He just shrugs and puts a camera up to his eye and follows you out of the lobby onto the sidewalk. You see Roys fiery red hair in the car across the street. He looks at you giving an awkward smile.

You strut over to who what you assume is Jason's car considering he's behind the wheel. The kid you now know is paparazzi flashes pictures the whole way. You decide to have fun and pose for some making him smile and say thanks before walking off. At least he wasn't rude.

You sit in the backseat of the car and buckle up. You were thankful that you did considering the way Jason peels out of the parking spot making you hold on for dear life.

"Sorry y/n, Jason's a crazy driver," Roy sighs.

Jason huffs, "I am not a crazy driver Harper. I'm a carefree driver."

That statement makes you hold on the rest of the ride.

It's not long until Jason veers into a reserved parking spot. Climbing out of the death machine you thank the gods you made it out of their alive. When you do you are able to get a look at your brother and his friend's outfits. Roy is dressed identically to you. Wich doesn't surprise you. THankfully he is wearing black jeans instead of leggings but all he needs is the socks and it would be a perfect match. Jason, however, is wearing his grey Gotham knights jersey with black jeans. You take note of his last name written on the back along with his number of choice '05'.

The three of you walk to the gate getting your tickets scanned and your bags checked. When you finally got inside you could smell all the classic game food. You didn't talk much to Roy deciding to talk to Jason most of the time instead. It was already a big step for you to even be there with Roy so you decided to take it slow and it seems he did too. You find your seats and sit wich is right behind home plate. When the game starts you admire all the hunky baseball players that come up to bat getting the perfect view. You sit in the middle of Roy and Jason so you can talk to them both. You tried to just sit by Jason but he trapped you in the middle. You text Conner letting him no you made it not so safely but are okay now. He responds about how jealous he is that you are there and you promise to take him to the next home game. There was one player on the Spartans that you found so hot. He was tall and muscular he was a great player and you ogled him the whole game. Jason and Roy found it excruciating. Every time he would come up to bat you would grab their arms shaking them as you squealed in delight. Every. Single. Time. He was also the catcher so you got to see him even more. It would have been better without the ump in the way though.

Throughout the game, you would send updates to Connor who was stuck at work and couldn't watch the game. You would also tell him every time you favorite was up describing his glory in full detail. You are almost positive he ignored those texts.

Jasons favorite player was the pitcher and every time your boy came up to bat Jason would go on and on about how he would get struck out but thankfully he never did and you got to rub it in each time. Although it was the bottom of 9th inning now and the Spartans were down by one run. You sent Connor updates practically every second making Jason confiscate your phone to stop the clicking noise. Of course, there were two outs with one runner on second an third and your favorite was up to bat. If he just hit a double the Spartans would win and you could laugh in Jasons face as he put on a Spartans jersey.

You started to clam up when there where two stikes. The three of you were on the edge of your seats. When the pitcher threw his pitch the batter swang and missed.

Your heart was crushed. Jason jumped up out of his chair and turned back at you laughing directly in your face as you covered it with your hands. You were so close goddamnit.

You and Roy sulked the whole way back to the car while Jason practically pranced with a newfound pep in his step. When you got in the car you slumped down in the backseat as Jason laughed going on and on about how he told us the Knights would win.

He finally stopped when he pulled into a Batburger saying something about how the winner gets to pick the restaurant.

The three of you walk in and up to the counter where you order your food. looking at the menu you see how it is themed, half of it was labeled heroes and the other labeled Rogues. You snickered when you saw all the burgers were named after Gotham vigilantes and villains. You could hardly contain your laugh when you saw that Jason didn't have a burger like the rest of his family. Batman was a normal burger Robin was a cheeseburger. Red Robin was a burger with peanut butter on it wich you found strange. Nightwing even had one even though he was based in Bludhaven, his was a double cheeseburger. After scanning batgirl, spoiler, black bat, signal, and even one labeled ' that onetime Nightwing was batman' you looked over at the Rogue side. You finally couldn't contain your laughter. Underneath The Joker, Penguin, Scarecrow, Ridler, Catwoman, Clayface, and Mr. freeze you saw one named 'The Red Hood' and you burst out laughing. Jason saw this and scowled huffing and puffing about how he isn't a villain and he should have a special spot in the middle.

When you got up to order you chose a Nightwing along with Roy and Jason ordered himself saying, "I want the Red Hood burger but by the way! He is not a villain he has saved countless lives so you should really change that before he decides to come in here and take care of it himself."

The man behind the cash register just blinks and asks, 'Will that be all?"

Jason just growls and hands him the money.

When you all sit down you send Connor a quick text about the result of the game and attempt to start a conversation. "Even though the Spartans lost I still had fun." I smile at the two boys sitting across from you.

"Would have been more fun if you weren't texting Connor the whole time," Roy says rolling his eyes.

You scowl at him before saying, "I wasn't texting him the whole time I was just giving him updates Roy."

As soon as his name leaves my mouth my phone lights up beside me dinging. "Who is that?" Roy asks gesturing to my phone.

I look at the message 'Conner' lights up the screen along with a picture of him right after he woke up from a nap looking like a hot mess. "Oliver," I respond snatching my phone up.

"You liar." Roy scowls.

"So what if it is I don't see the issue."

"Becuase you were supposed to come here to hang out with me not text your stupid boyfriend the whole time."

Jason just sits there looking back and forth between the both of us, "For the last time Roy he's not my boyfriend!"

Faster than the flash he snatches my phone out of my hand and scoffs, "Then why does he have hearts around his name?"

Your fists curl up in your lap, "All of my contacts have hearts around them, Roy, its how I know which number it is."

"Does mine?"

"No. I deleted your contact months ago."

We sit there scowling at each other till Jason chimes in, "Look guys I think we should just calm down."

You look at him with the same glare you had been giving Roy, "Don't tell me to calm down Todd! He has been gone for a year and when he comes back all he does it lecture me about Conner I'm sick of it he has no right to tell me who I can and can't date."

"Yes I can," Roy speaks up, " Whether you like it or not I am your big brother. As your big brother, I am telling you that you can absolutely not date any hero ever!"

You stare at him completely flabbergasted, "Why?"

"Because they are all my friends and that's like against the law!"

"But-"

He interrupts you, "Please y/n," he is quieter now more sincere, "Please promise me you won't date any superheroes."

You look at him still scowling, "Fine." Your food finally arrives and you refuse to look at Jason or Roy. Jason decides its best to just take it to go and everyone can eat on their own. You agree.

You go to sit in the car and wait for the boys while Jason and Roy talk. Jason says he is going to drop Roy off at their shared apartment then take you to yours and you just shrug and look out the window.

You sit staring out the car at all the others racing by in the dark grim streets of Gotham.

Rainbow’s End [2]

[part 1]

What a strange man, Dana said to herself and looked inside a box full of dinnerware, knowing that she should wash everything before putting it away into drawers and cabinets but having no time to do that. She picked two plates, and set aside everything else. They probably will eat out of cartons but she wanted to at least have the chance to offer. Fox, what a strange name, didn’t look like someone who stood on ceremony. She cleaned up the table, straightened the chairs, and leaving a carton on one of them, started to take out and rinse mugs, lining them up on a rag to dry. Coffee and tea was all she had around the house for now.

Mulder went downstairs with a silly grin on his face. Talk about small world, fate and fortune coincidences. Her warm smile was just as he remembered, real, he didn’t imagine it. A little angry at himself for not locking the door, he found the menus under the coffee table, took his wallet and stoped holding the doorknob. Calm down, relax. Where’s the fire? You know nothing about her, she might have someone, a guy, a girl perhaps. Don’t get ahead of yourself. Going through this silent rant, he double-backed to the fridge, white wine or beer? Beer, less alcohol, and anyway she can always opt out. He was locking his door when Alex passed him in the hallway, noticing the six-pack under his arm. “Wow, you’re cheap Mulder.” “Maybe for you Krycek,” he turned and went in the opposite direction than the other man, dislike quickening his step. “You know who moved in upstairs?” He called after him, but Mulder didn’t have time to answer. He knocked on the door and let himself in, “I’m back.”

Dana huffed out a small laugh without bothering to turn around, this guy knew nothing about boundaries. But as in other men it annoyed her, he made it feel casual and safe. She heard the clank of bottles and looked over her shoulder. “Don’t you have enough glass for one day?” “Something to wash down the food, totally optional, I’m not counting this into your tab,” he set the bottles on the table and spread out the pamphlets, “pick a place.” “I just moved here, how should I know which one is best?” “It’s like an adventure, come on, they’re all great so there’s no wrong choice to be honest.” “Okay, how about this,” she picked the most subdued design. “Not bad, best egg rolls of them all, mean sweet and sour chicken, but it’s your choice.” “Okay, let’s have that, I’m really not picky, and you seem to know your way around.” “You sure?” “Yup, go wild.” “Such a vote of confidence, I’m touched.” “Oh, just order already.” He picked up the phone, ordered and laughed with the person on the other side of the line, it sounded as if he was a regular customer. In the mean time she went to the box with kitchen utensils and found a bottle opener. “One hour tops,” Mulder said hanging up and took the bottle she offered, lifting it in a small salut, “to new friends.” “And safety glass,” she added and sipped from her bottle then went back to washing and drying the mugs. “So, Fox,” she started and he barked out a laugh. “Please, just Mulder, nobody calls me Fox, not even my parents.” “Alright, Mulder, what do you do for a living?” “I write horoscopes,” he went to his usual joke. A small lie combined with the fact that his novels were published under a pseudonym, bought him at least a few of days to get to know people without signing copies of his books for friends and relatives and answering questions about extraterrestrials. Life of a sci-fi novelist was hard. However the side effect of such innocent lie was her gaping mouth and bewildered smile. “What?” He chuckled, “someone has to do it.” She looked cute, frozen mid-wipe of a blue china cup. “How do you do that?” Dana forced herself to remain calm, “you had some kind of training?” “I took a four year course in Oxford,” he pushed on, wondering how far he could go with pulling her leg, before she burst out laughing, “came back to the states and now I run a little column for Cosmo, I can read your palm if you want.” And that was that, she couldn’t hold it in anymore, she bent over, arms crossed over her stomach and laughed, and laughed, and he laughed with her, marveling at the wonderful sound. “No, seriously, what do you do,” she gasped, siting at the table, wiping her eyes. “I’m a psychologist, not practicing, but I work for the FBI sometimes, mostly consulting jobs.” ��And that leaves you with time to read people’s futures?” She teased, resting her chin in the palm of her hand. “Enough to balance dabbling in criminals’ past.” She laid both her hands on the table, palms up. “Okay, what do you see in my future” Mulder chuckled, but took her hand in his awkwardly, his right still throbbing under the bandages. “I see a tall dark stranger, completely harmless, no need to worry,” a wink earned him a smile, “a charming young man who could be a true friend if you’ll let him, well versed in neighbourhood politics, a wellspring of knowledge about best parking spots, local take-out joints and deli stores.” “How many girls did you try to pick up with that line?” Her gaze was honest and she made it clear his BS made no impression, except maybe being slightly amusing. “Not as many as you’d think,” he let go pf her palms and dialled back on the teasing. “It’s not very effective,” she went back to washing the mugs, “so about those neighbourhood politics, are there some unwritten rules I should know about?” “Not really,” he could feel that he crossed some line, but didn’t let it scare him away. Dana Scully didn’t suffer fools and he made note to remember that. “The guy above you, Alex Krycek doesn’t like noise, I don’t mind either way, the couple downstairs, the Petrie’s are away on an extended holiday, haven’t seen them in three months, and I don’t expect them to be back anytime soon.” “Where did they go?” “I didn’t ask, they kept to themselves, and I respected that.” “So you do not make a habit out of barging in on your new neighbours on their fist day?” That stung a bit, he was beginning to regret his forwardness. “No, I do not, and if you like, I can leave,” he pushed the bottle aside and started to get up, “you did enough for me as it is, and I see you have a lot to do.” “No,” suddenly alarmed, Dana turned to face him, “I didn’t mean it like that, please, stay. I’m just not used to being,” she stoped, he wasn’t sure why, but a cloud of shame passed over her face, “called someone’s friend after 20 minutes since meeting them. People usually take me for the Ice Queen.” “You didn’t meet me 20 minutes ago,” he sat back down, trying to bring her back from the shell she was crawling back into, “we met this morning.” “We did?” “Yeah, you passed me when you were leaving the diner at the end of the street, great waffles and coffee, probably the best in D.C.” “I did?” She raked her memory, but pulled blank. “You probably were too busy to remember, with the movers arriving soon.” “How did you know that?” Her eyes grew wide, and she became worried a little, despite his assurances. “Calm down, simple observation, I saw the truck, I remembered your clothes and hair, eidetic memory, just a simple matter of putting two and two together.” “You do work for the FBI.” “Part time, but you pick up a habit or two, I swear I mean you no harm.” “Even if you did, I took a self-defense class, so I know how to take care of myself.” “I don’t doubt that,” he tried to smile his most sincere and non-threatening smile, and she began to relax, still he was curious. “Why do people call you Ice Queen? I see no reason for that.” “You seem like the exception to all rules,” she sighed and dried the last mug. “I guess I’m skeptical of all new acquaintances, you can call it trust issues if you want.” “I’d rather call it reason,” he got up and rounded the table. “You’re going? What about the food?” She sounded anxious but didn’t step back. “No, I’m not going anywhere,” he pushed up the sleeves as much as he could with his bad hand, “put me to work, how can I help?” “But your hand.” “I’ll manage, and if I break anything I’ll pay for it,” he was completely serious and she saw it. “Come on Scully, I’m at your disposal.” “Okay,” she let slide the use of her last name, with what he said about his own name, it seemed kind of fair, “maybe we’ll leave the dishes for now, I don’t want you to get those bandages wet, we could unpack the books, you think you can handle that?” “I’ll hand them to you, and you’ll arrange them inside the bookcase, because I’m sure you have a system.” “Yup,” she smiled and led the way to the stack of boxes in the living room, “I sure have.”

The process went quite smoothly as they waited for the food to arrive. Thanks to her sensible packing, the books were basically ordered the way she wanted them, the only problem was picking bookshelves. He didn’t skip a chance to laugh at some of the titles. “’Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: A Personal View’ now that must be a real page turner,” he laughed handing her another pile of books. “You have no idea, Steven King has nothing on this one.” “Nope, wait, we have a winner, this one I got to read,” he picked a medium-sized volume and started to page through it. “Give it back, Mulder,” she reached for the books but he turned away. “Hold on a second, this is great.” “What have you got there,” she tried to take the book from him but he escaped her again, “a layman shouldn’t read this stuff, you’ll read something and you’ll think you’re sick or dying.” “I’m not a layman, I’m a psychologist,” the book was hidden behind his back and smile, “not a hypochondriac.” “All men are,” she laughed and her arms went around him, searching for the book. Mulder froze and she realized what she was doing. She was holding on to him, her arms around his waist and he was looking down at her with a wicked grin. “Like I said, you’re no Ice Queen,” he took half a step back, still in her space but no longer in her arms, and showed her the title. “DIY Brain Surgery,” he said and gave her the book back, “you have to lend me this one sometime.”

The doorbell saved them. Scully from thinking too much about the hard muscle of his chest, and Mulder from trying to remember when was the last time a woman putting her arms around him made him laugh with excitement. He went to the door and paid the Lin boy, as always, tipping him handsomely. “You want to eat here?” She asked walking to the kitchen, ready to set the table. “Sure,” unpacking the food, he grimaced as she set the plates and napkins and silverware, “I thought we said no dishes.” “I want to try everything, so we’re sharing, I’ll do the dishes.” He didn’t argue, and she did try everything, eating with gusto, as befit someone who did a honest day’s work. The sight made Mulder almost as pleased as if he cooked for her himself, although he never did things like that. “I like this chicken thing, not too spicy to burn you through,” she said around a mouthful of moo goo gai pan. “Easy on the deep fried shrimp then, the sauce is pure fire,” he warned. “Really?” Taking a piece and dipping it cautiously, she nibbled at the end then gasped, “oh-ghod-wha-ish-thish” She covered her mouth breathing deeply, hoping the beer could put out the fire, gesturing with her chopsticks for him to take the shrimp. “Put it down,” he said and she did, the shrimp and the beer, looking down, flushed at being caught taking too much liberties. “You don’t pass food like that,” he said with a smile, picking the shrimp of her plate and dipping it in sauce, “it’s a funeral custom in Japan.” He bit of half without flinching, then licked his lips, and the sight made her feel warmth that had nothing to do with the hot sauce. She wanted to argue that they were having chinese not sushi, but he licked his lips again and she lost her train of thought for a moment. “Try the dumplings,” she heard him say a moment later and time picked up its’ usual pace.

The food was great as promised, and they had a second beer with it, each. “This was probably the best Chinese I ever had.” Scully sighed, leaning back in her chair with a contented smile that suddenly turned into a frown. She looked over his shoulder to the living room, “do you have some strength left in you to help me clean up the couch?” “Sure,” he said looking back to the overstuffed monster he saw before, now stacked with bags, most likely clothes, “you want to unpack or just move it?” “Move it, I’ll do that later or tomorrow.” “‘key.” So they moved the bags and sank into couch cushions, shoulder to shoulder. “I think I’m in danger of falling into a food induced coma,” Scully giggled and pulled her feet up, folding them underneath herself. Elvis record he found and she let him put on, made another circle and the King crooned softly about things that couldn’t be helped. Mulder reached over and pulled down the blanket she left on the back of the couch over her, gently drawing her into his side. “Sleep,” he said quietly, shifting to make them both more comfortable, “I know a good doctor.” Scully half laughed half sighed, but sleep was stronger than either of them. Mulder closed his eyes, and drifted off, rocked by her steady breath and the King’s lullaby.

One floor below, phone woke the answering machine who beeped, startled, and then reciting her line, took a message from the woman on the other side. “Fox, I can’t meet you tomorrow, maybe some other time.”

Cher had just fed Ringo and was helping Camille go through her packing checklist. She was leaving tonight for Atlanta to promote ProFantasySports and to escort the winners of the PFS Super You, Super Bowl contest around the events. Her boss Stephen and co-worker Jake were also going on the trip but as Camille was quickly becoming the face of the company her schedule was jam packed. She had media events, live streams with the contest winners, and parties with players and agents.Camille was a ball of nerves as this was her first BIG event for the company. Stephen was with her for every media event and party, but the sheer scope of the audience intimidated her.

“Calum is driving you to the airport right?” Cher asked her.

“You know how he is,” Camille chuckled.

“Is he still pouting you're leaving for the week?” Cher asked.

“You know how he is,” Camille repeated, this time rolling her eyes. “I don't get it I'll be gone for days. He was gone for weeks.”

“You did snatch his soul just two days ago” Cher pointed out before her phone started going nuts.

“Who's that? Ashton?” Camille raised her eyebrows.

“They've both cheated before, what makes this different?” Camille asked.

“I think because it's Harry, someone who lives I the complex, that's bothering Nick. Maybe he's just sick of the drama who knows? I'm gonna go see him but I'll be back before you leave. I'm taking him some booze,” Cher told her.

“Tell Cody I still love him,” Camille called after her.

Camille had her suitcases on the bed going through them once more to make sure everything was right. As usual she had a color coded system to assist in packing and Calum was stretched across her bed helping her check off each item. He'd insisted on being the one to drive her to the airport and helping her pack so he could spend every minute with her before she left.

“Have you ever been to Atlanta?” Calum asked looking over her itinerary.

“No, I've hardly ever traveled. Anytime I got on a plane or was to Ohio or Florida to see grandparents,” Camille replied.

“I swear you're packing for me next time I go anywhere. I don't know how you stay so organized,” Calum shook his head as he watched her pack little items into small bags, small bags into bigger bags, and the big bags into her suitcase.

“It's one less thing to worry about. Also it makes me crazy to have to buy something I need at the last minute. I'm stressed out enough as it is about this whole trip.” Camille was bouncing on her toes as she paced nervously.

“Darling, you're going to be great. You're amazing at what you do and I couldn't be more proud. You need to calm down, come over here and let me help you with that, please?” Calum reached out and pulled her down next to him on the bed. Camille protested but Calum leapt up closed each suitcase and gently set it on the floor by the bed. He then laid Camille onto her back working his way between her thighs, pulling her jeans and panties down his mouth seeking her out. Soon his tongue was curling inside her, his hair clenched in her fists as he worked on getting her more relaxed.

“You didn't think I was going to let you leave without making sure you remember you're mine, did you?” Calum growled against her skin. “Cody what the hell are you doing? This isn't the first time you and Nick have broken up. You said yourself y'alls relationship has been problematic from the beginning.” Cher wanted to cut through Cody's theatrics to get to the real problem.

“Everything is just fucked now,” Cody set the bottle down on the table to rest his hands in his head. “Nick told me he hasn't been happy for a while now. He'd been holding on hoping that somehow we could turn this around, fix it and build it back up.”

“Why can't you though if that's what you both want?” Cher questioned.

“Because he doesn't want that anymore. He's cheated, I've cheated...hell he even fooled around with Harry himself before we ever knew each other. It's just gotten to the point where we're both tired of trying again, if we were really in love we wouldn't keep hurting each other like this,” Cody looked miserable but resigned.Cher started to protest but Cody stopped her “Cher it's done, we're selling the condo and moving on.”

“Cody YOU CAN'T!” Cher was stunned. “You can't move away. You're always gone for work if you move I'll never see you.”

“I can't afford it on my own, even if I could I doubt he'd sell out to me,” Cody sighed. “I don't know what to do.”

“Don't do anything until I can talk to Camille and my lawyer. We'll figure something out, I promise. You just have to get a little time,” Cher met his eyes as she grabbed his hands.

Cody felt hopeful for the first time in days. Maybe his girls could help him figure everything out.

“Oh my God Calum I'm gonna be sore tomorrow,” Camille stretched and snuggled her head into Calum’s chest.

“Good,” Calum laughed and pinched her ass causing Camille to giggle. She rolled off the bed and grabbed her robe to walk to the bathroom.

He started to follow but she stopped him “we have to leave in forty minutes you stay here and put your pants on. I'm going to get cleaned up.” Camille laughed as she headed down the hall as Calum stood up grabbing a towel and his pants. Sitting back on the bed he flipped through her itinerary again this time spotting a few things he hadn't noticed before. Camille came back from a quick shower and began getting dressed pulling on black yoga pants, pink Nike air max sneakers and Calum's green Empathy hoodie she was stealing for the week.

“Babe I wish you could come with me. I'm going to miss you,” Camille began to apply a little bit of makeup. She wasn't famous enough to get attention but there were enough photographers around the Super Bowl that Camille wanted to look good just in case.

“I'm sure you'll be too busy to notice,” Calum muttered his voice low. Camille laughed “have you seen my schedule? I'm going to be too busy to remember my own name.”

“Just hope you remember you have a boyfriend.” Calum replied just loud enough for Camille to hear him.

Camille tried to laugh it off “don't be silly babe, like I could ever forget you.”

“Well you know how you forget things,” Calum had a tone in his voice that was impossible to ignore.

“Okay what's that supposed to mean?” Camille put down her makeup brush and turned to face him.

“Just that it's convenient that you forgot to mention you'd be at a party with Quentin. Your ex boyfriend that seems to pop up from time to time.” Calum grumbled.

“No, no that's not how it is. You've had that itinerary for two weeks now. I never hid anything from you. That party is hosted by Brandon Pearcy, Quentin's agent, he was at the New Years Eve party. Brandon is the agent to several big name NFL players and getting to know him is a smart business move.” Camille spoke slowly trying to remain calm.

“Don't talk down to me,” Calum huffed “I know who he is. He was shamelessly flirting with you at that party until I showed up. Besides don't act like you've never kept a secret from me.”

“What are you talking about and why are you doing this? I've never kept any secrets from you.” Camille was baffled but starting to feel her temper rise.

“Oh so you weren't keeping secrets for Harry?” Calum's voice was accusing.

“Be serious!” Camille shot back. “That's not even fair. Cody and Harry had nothing to do with you, I found out by accident and it wasn't my business to tell anyone. That was more for Cody, who has been my friend for years, than Harry.”

“This is ridiculous. This has nothing to do with Cody or Harry so stop pretending it does.” Camille put her hands on her hips, her face flushing pink.

“Okay fine, I don't like that you didn't tell me you were going to a party your ex boyfriend is going to be at,” Calum was on his feet now pacing around the room.

“You know Quentin is actually playing in the Super Bowl. His agent is the one throwing the party. I don't know who might show up, and my boss will be at the party with me. As much fun as the Super Bowl is may I please remind you that for me this is a work event. I am working this entire week.” Camille rubbed her eyes feeling the beginnings of a headache.

Calum felt his stomach turn, this was all coming out wrong but he couldn't stop himself. “No I get it, your job is more important to you than our relationship,” he regretted the words the second they left his mouth.

“Are you serious? Yes actually it is, you mean the world to me Calum, but this is how I make a living. I don't know what the hell has gotten into you, but I have worked way too hard to build myself a career to throw it away because you're in a shit mood.” Camille squared her shoulders not willing to back down.

He ran out the back door and Cher couldn't move for a second. She heard the sound of glass breaking upstairs and it snapped her back to reality.

Anytime a mount dropped in runs you'd say "I need the mount first because I've been waiting for so long for it" or "I've always wanted it" thinking that gives you priority over others who have also been running for that mount. Once you received that mount you always drop group. Whenever anyone called you out on this you'd either cry or leave discord and vague post about that person. You are not a good person.

Commonly available emergency scleral fills?

Hi all, I’m on vacation in the Dominican Republic and caught up in a total airline catastrophe. Checked bags haven’t arrived and don’t seem likely to anytime soon, and I’m on my last vial of carried-on Lacripure. I never travel without my kit in my carry on, I just didn’t anticipate how many days our checked bags might take to get here. Lesson learned. I’m going to venture out tomorrow in search of something to bridge me over until our bags show up with several more vials (or our bags don’t show up and we go home). I’ve never had luck finding anything I knew was alright to fill sclerals with in a drug store at home (Canada). Resort pharmacy has Systane Ultra bottles, just not the preservative free vials. But I suspect the PF Systane Ultra stuff is out there. Any Hail Mary ideas or local knowledge out there? Or like, random travellers willing to toss a guy a few addipacks on their way to their resort? There are various demands from our conscience or even loved ones. We make big deals in our whole lifetime. The purchase of a site or flat is one of such a huge investment for which we need proper investigation. It requires huge capital as well. We can go for loans from banks or borrow from our acquaintance. To make the process easier, EPFO has proposed the withdrawal for the purchase of the site or flat. In this article, we’ll look forward to how you can easily go for the EPF withdrawal for purchasing a site or flat.

Why Should You Go For EPF Withdrawal For Purchasing A Site Or Flat?

Employee’s Provident Fund(EPF) is a part of your basic wage that gets deducted each month to promote your retirement saving habits. The amount contributed is based on a fixed rate. Employees earn interest on their EPF balance.

One can withdraw from EPF account balance, subject to certain conditions and within certain limits. 75% of the EPF balance can get withdrawn if a person remains unemployed for one month. Complete 100% of EPF balance withdrawal gets allowed if you remain jobless for more than 2 months. Partial withdrawal is also allowed under Employee’s Provident Fund scheme,1952. Under it, we’ve EPF withdrawal for purchasing of a site or plot.

The EPF Scheme is a part of the government agenda of housing for all. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna also provides up to 2.2 lakh rupees interest subsidy. Yet, it’s provided to the people with annual income less than a specified amount. Added to that, they must not own any house in the name of any family member anywhere in the country.

Let’s know more about why should you go for EPF withdrawal for purchasing a site or plot-

Features Under EPF Withdrawal For Purchasing A Site Or Flat

i. The withdrawal process you filed for is delivered to you may or may not be in direct form. It may get delivered to the government agency or your bank account or your flat society head.

ii. In case you cancel the deal of buying the property, the amount you withdrew, get refunded to your EPF account. This procedure gets completed within about 15 days.

iii. In case you got the fund from ‘total expenditure of the construction,’ there’s another rule for it. You’ve to return it to your account within a max of 30 days.

iv. Under this cause, you can get either in one or more than one installment.

v. You won’t get permitted for the withdrawal procedure if the property is in the name of anyone else. That is, it’s mandatory for you or your wife or both to be the legal owner of the property. Otherwise, you would get expelled from the request of withdrawal made.

Eligibility Criteria Of The EPF Withdrawal

According to the latest norms of the PF withdrawal, you must meet the following criteria-

a. You must be an active member of the EPFO for a min of five years.

b. The total amount in your PF account(or together with your wife) must be a minimum of Rs. 20,000.

c. You can avail of this opportunity only once. It means you can go for the EPF withdrawal for the purchase of a plot or flat once in your lifetime.

Rules And Regulations Of EPF Withdrawal For Purchasing A Site Or Flat

There are some protocols that you must abide by to withdraw your EPF money for purchasing of a plot or site-

A. In Case Of Purchase Of Plot-

i. You must have rendered at least 3 service years to your company or organization.

ii. Your share must be more than 1000 rupees as a contribution to your fund.

iii. The limit of money that can get withdrawn is 90% of your total amount in your PF account.

iv. Withdrawal is not allowed if the property is to get purchased jointly with anyone, except the spouse. In this case, both, i.e., you and your wife must be an active subscriber of EPFO.

v. The investigation and survey regarding the plot must get over within a max of 6 months.

vi. Withdrawal can be made in one or more installments.

B. In Case Of Construction Or Purchase Of House/Flat-

i. You must bear at least three years of subscription in EPFO.

ii. Your share must be more than 1000 rupees as a contribution to your fund.

iii. The limit of money that can be withdrawn is 90% of your total amount in your PF account.

iv. Withdrawal is not allowed if the construction of the house is to be on-site owned jointly with anyone, except your wife. In this case, both must be a subscriber of EPFO.

v. Withdrawal can be made in one or more installments.

vi. In case you’re withdrawing for the building of your house, you must begin it within a max of 6 months of withdrawal of the first installment. Then, you must get it completed within 12 months of withdrawal of the final installment.

vii. You have to be a member of the co-operative or housing society. Apart from that, this society must bear at least 10 members.

viii. You can also make monthly premiums for your PF balance against any outstanding loan. It can be in your name or your spouse. However, to name it in your wife’s name, it’s required for her to be an EPFO member as well.

ix. The contributions made to EPFA over the past 3 months are considered by banks. Bank uses it to calculate EMI through your EPFA.

Documents Required For EPF Withdrawal

The form for this cause is Form-31. Thus, first, you need to fill the form and submit it. You can do it either online or offline. The online mode is relatively easier, contains less paperwork, and requires much lesser time than the offline method. In the online mode, you can get your amounts transferred within a max of 7 days. On the other hand, the offline procedure takes a longer duration.

With all that, you’ve to tie-up a declaration form.

Amount You Can Avail From EPF Withdrawal

Since the article involves the purchase of a site or a flat, it has two sub-divisions. So, the amount you can avail of depends on which division you’re in.

1. If you’re purchasing a site for building your house, you’ll get an amount equal to-

Your 2- year salary, including the Dearness Allowed. For example, you earn Rs. 50,000 per month. Counting up to a total of it in 24 months yields an amount of Rs. 12 lakh.

2. If you’re withdrawing for the construction of your house, you’ll get an amount equal to-

Your 3-year salary added up with the DA. For example, you earn Rs. 60,000 per month. Counting up to a total of it in 36 months yields an amount of Rs. 21,60,000.

In this criteria, you’ll get an amount that is less than the rest. These get judged from several other bases as well. These are mentioned below-

Total expenditure of the construction. For this, you must make a rough calculation of the total processes and the cost under each. This can either yield up an amount greater than the required or less.

You and your manager’s share to your EPF fund with the accrued interest to it.

Thus, the three options get into the EPFO officer’s consideration. Finally, you get an amount that counts to be the least.

Physical cash

Cheque

Postal order

Directly to your bank account

1. How can I withdraw my PF for buying a flat without my employer’s assistance?

Earlier, dealing with your employer for these things was a matter of hesitation for a few employees. Especially if your employer is a grumpy one, that posed a great problem to your procedure. They would make excuses or make you lick their shoes to get your work done. Due to this, the EPFO has clarified that you need not please your grumpy employer all the time. There can be other methods that can add to your ease. Thus, as per the latest improvisation, you can carry out the procedure without the aid of your boss. Let’s see how-

i. Visit your UAN portal by logging in with your requisite ID and password. Check if your Aadhar card is updated. If not, then update it. ii. Recheck it with the information on your employer’s list. Then tie-up your Aadhar number with your UAN portal. iii. There you’ll find an online EPF withdrawal handout. Provide your relevant details to it. iv. Finally provide the details in the hands of the EPFO officer of your area. After a few days, you can get the amount.

2. Can I withdraw PF for buying land?

Yes, certainly you can go for an EPF withdrawal for buying a plot or a site. However, to avail of it, you must satisfy certain regulations. You must have rendered at least 5 years of your service to your organization. The amount you wish to withdraw must be either less or the exact amount of the plot. Yet, if the amount in your account is less than the amount required. You’ll get the lesser amount.

For instance, if the land costs Rs. 15 lakh and the amount you’ve in your bank is Rs. 12 lakh. You’ll get the lesser amount, i.e., Rs. 12 lakh.

3. Is employer approval required for PF withdrawal?

As I’ve already mentioned above, it may or may not be a requisite factor in your withdrawal process. Some good employers go in good terms with their employees. However, for the grumpy employers, the improvisation was enforced. That is, you need not impress them all the time to get your work done. There are other ways out there to serve you.

Thus, if your employer agrees to get your work done in a short period, go for him. Otherwise, politely look for the other way out, as mentioned above.

4. How many days it will take to withdraw EPF online?

The online procedure involves no paperwork, and only the laptop or computer clicks. Okay, you can take a few print outs even. Yet, the tediousness in the offline method is much more than online. I had pulled pork and sausage with sides of green beans and button mushrooms. Everything was obvious drowned in butter and hot BBQ sauce, so to minimize metabolic disaster, I took half of it with me to save for later. Maggie May (the fluff pup) is certainly interested in my food endeavors; from that protein shake this morning, I’ve had a 100 calorie pack of cashews, a tuna pack, and now BBQ. Beaten, burnt out and broke: How Haryana's ASHA workers, on frontlines of fight against COVID-19, are coping

Suman, 17, was cooking lunch when a man wielding a steel pipe barged into her home and hit her on the head. The motive was revenge: Suman's mother, Usha, an Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) worker in Butana Kundu village in Sonipat, Haryana, had stuck a home quarantine notice outside the man's home two days ago as part of her COVID-19 duty.

Usha is one of over 10 lakh ASHAs who connect India’s rural population to its public healthcare system as a part of the country’s National Health Mission (NHM). Her pre-pandemic job role, which included over 60 tasks — from vaccinating newborns to taking care of expecting women, and advising them on family planning — has been entirely re-written during COVID-19.

Now, she is expected to conduct door-to-door preliminary surveys for the infectious disease, inform healthcare authorities if anyone shows symptoms or returns from outside the village, and spread awareness on hygiene and social distancing norms.f

So, when a woman in Usha’s neighbourhood returned to her home from outside Butana on 1 May, she informed the authorities at the Primary Health Center (PHC). “They asked me to tell her to quarantine herself at home and put a sticker on her front gate. Even though my job is only to inform them, I followed orders, but the family simply tore the sticker,” Usha said.

The next day, as Usha was replacing the sticker, the mother of the returnee rushed outside and pushed her. “She abused me and told me to stop harassing their family. She slapped me and then bit me on my palm saying ‘ab hoga tujhe corona, tu dekh’ [now you will get the coronavirus infection, you see],” Usha recounted.

At the PHC, she received a tetanus shot for her bite after which she went back to work. The health authorities told her they'd take care of the offending family.

Two days later, when Usha was out doing surveys, a young man from that family went to her house and hit her daughter. This, revenge for ‘telling on them’ to the health authorities who paid them a visit and yet again put up the home quarantine notice on their gate.

“I took Suman in a 108 ambulance to PGI‌ (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research)‌ Gohana, where they refused to admit her saying there were too many COVID-19 patients. They referred her to PGI Khanpur, which then referred her to PGI Rohtak. Even they said the same thing and sent us back home with some painkillers for Suman. They didn’t even give us a government ambulance to go back. I paid Rs. 1,700 for a private one,” Usha recounted.

For two days, Suman was mostly unconscious and Usha was convinced she was going to lose her daughter. A widow and mother of four, working a job that provides her with meagre pay, Usha simply could not afford to take Suman to a private hospital.

Efforts of the Haryana ASHA Workers’ Union helped news of the incident spread on social media on 5 May. The state health department was pressured into ordering the PHC to tend to Suman at home.

“She’s better now. But she doesn’t say anything, doesn’t smile and can’t even sit. Even after serving my people, my country, this is what I‌ get. Barely any money, no protection, an injured child. I’ve failed as a mother and the health ministry has failed me,” Usha said, breaking down.

Sunita Rani, an ASHA from Nathupur village in Sonipat and also a union leader, is far more specific in placing the blame. “The government’s communication plan and awareness campaigns around COVID-19 have been really weak. They created stigma along religious lines after the Tablighi Jamaat incident and divided Hindu-Muslim families. This only added to the casteism and classism we face. A huge portion of Haryana’s ASHAs belong to Scheduled Castes, are poor and are not very highly educated. People look down on us, thinking who are we to tell them how to live and where to go or not go,” she said.

Yet another bias plays a role in the harassment and assault ASHAs are facing: gender. Pre-COVID, the men would go out to work and the ‌ASHAs would bond with the women over things they can’t otherwise discuss. But with the lockdown firmly in place, the men are at home; they often dismiss ASHAs who come knocking for COVID surveys as women who don’t know any better.

Sheela, vice-president of the Haryana chapter of All India Democratic Women's Association, believes that the government has given ASHAs no tools to confront this multi-layered hostility and stigma on the front lines.

“We’ve been asked to go and check every street, day and night, with barely any protective equipment. People in our society harass us. On top pf everything, the police, who are out with us as we fight this disease – even they don’t cooperate. How are we supposed to work?” she asked.

For Usha Rani, an ASHA‌ worker from Jagadhri city in Yamunanagar, Haryana, this non-cooperation from the police has cost her 23 times what the government is paying ‌ASHAs per month for their COVID-19 duties.

On 3 May, she was asked to conduct door-to-door surveys in Durga Garden, part of her village outside her ambit. In the absence of any public transport during the nationwide lockdown, a glaring sun overhead and reports of police beating up ASHAs caught walking to work, Rani resorted to asking her 15-year-old son Harsh to drop her on their bike.

Shortly into her fieldwork, she felt weak and faint and had to call him back to pick her up.

“The government has not arranged any transportation for us, despite expecting us to do COVID-19 surveys anytime, anywhere in this heat. What option did I have? But the traffic police stopped him at a checkpoint, fined him Rs 23,000 and forced him to sign the challan,” Usha Rani said.

Haryana’s ASHA‌ workers are paid Rs 2000 per month by the Central government, Rs 4,000 per month by the state government and are now receiving an additional Rs 1,000 a month for their COVID-19 duties.

“My husband died in an accident in the factory he worked at two years ago. The bike is in his name, and we lost all documents in a minor fire. I live with my aging mother-in-law and three children, the oldest of whom is Harsh. I am from a very poor family. I can’t afford this challan.‌ I request the authorities to cancel it, or the health department to pay it on my behalf since I was only doing my duty,” Rani added..

Pre-COVID, Rani would not have been assigned to do surveys at Durga Garden; ASHAs scope of work used to be limited to around 1,000 people in their neighbourhood.

Now, with India steadily climbing up the COVID-19 charts, they are also being assigned to different parts of their districts to cover densely-populated semi-urban and urban areas, and even unauthorised colonies.

In Kaithal district, two ASHAs have been deployed at every police check point along the Haryana-Punjab border to conduct temperature checks, make a list and submit a record at the end of each day.

“When the lockdown began, one ASHA worker and one Auxilliary Midwife Nurse (ANM) were deployed. Now, the ANMs have refused to do this duty and put it on us. From 7 am to 5 pm, we stand there in the sun. Our families have to drop us and pick us up and we pay for the fuel out of our own pocket,”‌ Saroj* (name changed), one of the ASHAs who has been travelling over 10 kilometres a day for her posting at one of the check points said.

Sunita pointed out that these additions to their initial COVID-19 roles‌ of conducting surveys, such as putting home quarantine notices and manning police checkpoints, happen either verbally or over WhatsApp. “No revised guidelines have been issued on what ASHAs have to do in this pandemic and how much they will be paid for it,” she added.

“We’re not even saying no to the work. But, the least the government could have done is given us transport, health department ID‌ cards and protective gear so we have some credibility and safety when we are sent out to quarantine people and deal with hostile men,” Sunita added.

Ranjana Narula, senior leader at Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), has a longer list of basic provisions the government should have made before sending ASHAs out on the front lines of the COVID-19 fight.

“These women have to visit anywhere between 25 and 100 houses every day to conduct surveys. Many walk over 10 to 12 km daily in the sun, collect information, return to the PHC to submit it, then go back to check on suspected cases multiple times in a day. Apart from transport, the government should have the sense to provide water and meals,” she said. CITU demanded proper protective equipment – masks, gloves, shoe coverings, coats, sanitisers – for all ASHAs as early as March. “But even today, only some have it. Almost no one has gloves, coats, shoe coverings. Women use chunnis as masks. We know there is no shortage of funds between PM Cares and Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). So why not allocate it where needed?” she wondered.

But that hasn't happened despite repeated demands from the union, even as the first case of COVID-19 has been confirmed among the state’s ASHAs.

Omwati, from Dukheri village in Ambala, Haryana had been doing her daily COVID-19 surveys, as usual, using her chunni as a mask and with no gloves, when she developed a headache and felt faint. She gave her sample for a COVID-19 test the following day, after which she tested positive on 4 May.

“I was immediately admitted to NM Hospital, Mullana. For four days, I was kept in a general ward with 30 to 32 migrant workers who were being tested for COVID. There was one common bathroom for men and women which was always dirty. I didn’t relieve myself for three days,” Omwati added.

After she sent out this SOS video on 6 May, she was shifted to a cleaner ward on 8 May but she wants a separate room with a bathroom so she can recover quickly and resume her job as a community health worker.

“The government is treating doctors and us differently when we are as important a part of this fight against COVID as them. They are given better facilities when they test positive. Is it too much to ask for to be treated equally?” she asked.

It would appear that way, given how Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s announcement doubling the salaries of all healthcare workers fighting COVID-19 did not include ASHAs.

“I’ve not taken a holiday. I got this disease because I was doing my job. Even now, other ASHAs who are stepping in for me and my ANM‌ keep calling me for information. I am working even in the hospital through my phone. And they’re saying they won’t pay me. How will I run my home?” Omwati asked.

Her husband, who used to work for a private contractor, has not been earning since the lockdown began either. He, along with their two children, were tested for COVID-19 on 9 May. Their results are awaited.

“How can they deduct her payment? First they give ASHAs Rs 1,000 per month for COVID work, which is Rs around Rs. 33 a day. That’s laughable! Especially when you see that they can’t do any of their other incentive-based tasks such as holding family planning awareness meetings. Best Camera Gear Setup for Travel Photography

While a quick trip to do some shooting in the city might involve little more than throwing a body or two in a duffel bag and heading out — an odd overlap with your average serial killer’s check list — heading off somewhere exotic can require a bit more planning. What else should you throw in the bag?

The Short and Skinny of It

Whether you’re off to Africa for a month or headed to a national park for the weekend, the gear you pack can have a significant impact on the type of images you can make and the stories you can tell. After a few years of more missed shots and underwhelming images than I’d like to admit while traveling, we’ve started to hone in on a collection of camera gear that works well for us in the field. Let’s take a quick look at what makes it into the camera bag on nearly any big trip these days, then discuss in a little more detail why it’s that stuff, specifically, that makes the cut:

Three lenses: a super telephoto (500+ mm), a super wide-angle zoom (14-24mm), and a standard zoom (24-70mm)

Getting Up Close and Personal

Camera bodies just record things. Lenses, on the other hand, determine what we can see. The lenses we travel with shape the experiences we will have and the stories we’ll be able to tell.

Me, I am not a city person. If I’m spending the time and energy to travel somewhere, it’s almost always in search of the natural world and its inhabitants. The first lens I usually think about, then, is something to help us appreciate the wildlife. My inclination is nearly always to grab the longest lens we can manage. I’ve yet to run into too long. That said, too big can start to have some unintended side effects. Seven pounds is about the max I’m willing to handhold (and that’s not fun over the course of a day). Any bigger than that and I know I’m going to be going literally everywhere with a tripod.

Nikon’s Phase Fresnel (PF) and Canon’s Diffractive Optics (DO) lenses can be excellent options for the travel photographer wanting to lengthen their reach without adding on pounds. You can check out a recent review of Nikon’s 500mm f/5.6 PF. That lens, or something similar, will probably be on every trip with us for the foreseeable future. The combination of image quality and size is essentially unbeatable. And don’t forget that renting is always an option if you don’t want to be saddled with a pricey telephoto longer term.

Story Telling

Next, we need a good story-telling lens or two. On one of our first big trips, we took only a single camera body. Since we wanted to get lots of bird pictures, that body almost always had a 300mm lens on it. Anytime we took the telephoto off, a new bird would fly past, so we’d race to put the telephoto back on. When we got home, we realized that only 20% of the images we’d taken were on anything shorter than 300mm. Yet, when it came time to decide what to put in the portfolio or show our friends, 80% of those shots were taken with a 24-70mm equivalent. The take-home message was that it was challenging to tell a good story about the amazing places we’d visited when limited to roughly the field-of-view of a very long toilet paper tube.

After that trip, we became far more determined not to let a good storytelling lens or two be an afterthought. We now travel with both a 15-30mm and a 24-70mm (and both of much better quality than that early lens). It turns out the super wide-angle is particularly good when you wake in the middle of the night to the sound of hippos munching in the grass a few meters from your tent platform, then notice that there are about two billion stars draped overhead. Definitely worth a shot. And the 24-70mm is just about perfect to keep by your camp chair — next to a nice glass of wine, of course — while the sun sets and roos wander out of the forest; you know, just in case something worth snapping a photo of appears. It’s not bad for street shooting either, if you’re so inclined.

Lastly, we typically throw a 70-200mm into our bag of kit as well. It probably sees the least use for the type of shooting we do, but at f/2.8, it can create buttery portraits of the people we meet on our travels.

The Right Gear at the Right Moment

It’s not enough to have the right lens. It has to actually be on the camera when you need it. Two camera bodies now go with us on every trip. It’s incredibly useful from the perspective of having multiple lenses always at the ready. You’ve also got a backup, then, in case a body fails along the way. Further, it means you don’t have to change lenses frequently, which is a doubly good thing in places where it’s frequently dusty or the humidity is high (that is, all the fun places).

We’ve settled over time on two high-resolution, full-frame bodies for the image quality and flexibility they offer, but that’s personal taste. Crop-frame- or micro-four-thirds-based bodies can save a good bit of space and weight, allowing that savings to be spent in other places. Think a bit beforehand, however, about what role each body is supposed to play. We took a full-frame paired with a crop-frame on one trip. The crop frame, we thought, would be ideal for shooting wildlife, but it turned out the autofocus system wasn’t nearly as good as on the full frame. Swapping lenses, though, put the wide angle on the smaller sensor, leaving us with a crop factor that took a huge chunk out of any landscape or contextual shots. Live and learn.

Lastly, don’t forget the tripod. Even if you’re not lugging around a 10-pound lens, magic things can happen when you immerse yourself in the world that will make you glad you’ve got one. When we camped on a remote bend in the Buffalo River one afternoon, we had no idea that an amazing light show would take place later that evening. As fireflies began dancing about the cove, I was able to just plop my camp chair down in a shallow bit of the river and settle in for the show. And because I had a tripod with me, I can share the show with you.

Making Sure Those Great Stories Make It Home

Now that we’ve set ourselves up to get lots of great images, we want to make sure they make it home with us.

Memory Cards

Take a few of them. SD cards are so cheap you can use them as a third backup. Just stash them away for safe keeping when they fill up and insert another card. We usually end up using 128 GB cards rather than something smaller. They’re slightly riskier in the sense that if one fails, we’ll lose more images, but also less likely to get lost while switching them out in a teetering boat or on some jungle trail in the rain.

XQD memory cards, on the other hand, aren’t so cheap. The XQD card gets erased every evening and reused after I’ve verified that I’ve got two hard drive backups of the day’s take. I do have a second backup XQD card stashed away just in case the primary fails since they’re not so easy to come by in the bush. Hope for the best. Plan for the worst.

Batteries

For two camera bodies, we have at least five batteries with two separate chargers. We’ve yet to find ourselves without a fresh battery in the field that way. If you’re headed overseas, make sure the chargers will work at both 50 Hz and 60 Hz, and at both 120 V and 220 V. And don’t forget the appropriate travel adapter and small, multi-outlet power strip. Oh, and be prepared to be creative. The travel adapter we took to Namibia didn’t work in most places. It turns out they use two subtly different plug variations. It took a couple of trips to hardware stores to cobble together a three- or four-layer adapter system that eventually got power from the outlet into a form we could plug a laptop or battery charger into.

Backups

A small laptop with Lightroom (or something similar) installed will give you a way to get files off the camera, manage backups, and do a quick quality check each evening. The small laptop we take only has a 64 GB solid-state drive, so we also carry along two external travel hard drives. One is a little more rugged, with a rubber shell and a rating to withstand a sizable drop. The other has a built-in SD card reader and Wi-Fi access so that in the event the laptop fails, we can still backup our photographs (at least those from a camera using SD cards). Both hard drives run off of USB power so don’t require additional cables. They also allow us to do backups using just the laptop battery when power isn’t available. Each evening, I use Lightroom to import photos from both cameras onto the primary external drive. I then manually copy the images a second time to the other drive. One of the drives usually stays in camp or at the lodge, the other goes everywhere with me in my day pack.

If you’re keeping tally, the number of cables is starting to add up. I’m anal about them when traveling, using a couple of carrying cases to keep them organized. Each case has elastic holders and zippered pouches. Every cable gets stored in the same place each time we repack, that way I know exactly how many elastic holders should have cables in them and how many cables belong in each zippered pouch. It’s easy to tell, then, if something’s missing when I’m packing up, even if it’s 4:30 am in the morning and I haven’t had coffee yet. More than once, it’s been a lifesaver. Forget to repack the laptop power cable three days into a month in the African bush and you’re a bit buggered.

Camera Bag

Of course, now that we’ve got all this crap, we’ve got to have some way to lug it around with us. A good photography-specific backpack can be invaluable. We use the ThinkTank Airport Commuter. It’s got a rugged design with bomb-proof zippers that has stood up to many serious trips around the world at this point. It has room enough to carry all of the above equipment, plus a tripod ball-head, SteriPEN, and a binder with hard copies of all our travel documents.

Note, however, if you’re thinking about getting something bigger than this, stop, and seriously, seriously, think about it first. U.S. airlines are very permissive about the size of items they will allow you to carry on. You can basically strap a small car to your back. Once you get to, for example, Africa, however, they will not typically let you take a standard carry-on size roller bag on the plane. The Airport Commuter is big enough to fit a ton of gear, but will still fit under an airline seat. Any bigger and you may be forced to check it. You do not want that.

Insurance

On that note, just be aware that at least our homeowner’s policy only covers up to $3,000 or so of camera equipment. It’s easy to fit many times that much in even a small camera bag. We have a second, surprisingly cost-effective policy through our insurer that covers all our camera gear anywhere it goes in the world.

Why Bother?

Starting to sound like a good bit of kit, eh? Admittedly, I often have no small sense of envy when I see fellow travelers snapping a shot, then slipping a small point-and-shoot back into their shirt pocket. Meanwhile, I’m usually standing there with one camera dangling around my neck and another, a massive DSLR with a long lens, gripped by the tripod mount in my hand.

When we get home, though, and exchange a few photos with folks we’ve met along the way, it’s usually a different story. On a technical level, the little point-and-shoot will always be a bit handicapped when it comes to competing with a full-frame body and massive lens on sharpness, noise, or dynamic range. That’s been borne out time and again in the images we’ve seen from other folks along the road.

Me, I love a technically well-executed image, that finely honed blend of art and science. But whether that’s important to you — whether a little less noise or sharper details will help you tell the story you want to tell — that’s a totally different question! The important thing is to see the world, to have fun doing it, and to share your enthusiasm for it with others in whatever way makes the most sense for you.
