Boys Fashion headcanons in my ✨AU with no name✨
Sonic: Y2K inspired style, may not be exactly how it is back in the day, but it’s pretty damn close! Tank tops, baggy jeans, Air Forces, and sometimes brings a boom box with him. For the more feminine style, arm and leg warmers, multiple belts and jelly bracelets, and yes, a fur hat. However, it’s synthetic and the only one he owns. It’s actually a gift from amy!
Shadow: he’s usually going to be wearing some kind of biker-esque style. Leather boots, slightly baggy Jeans, fluffy leather coat, etc. However, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t wear other styles outside of missions. Particularly more gothic attire, and even a few good drag queen looks too! (Headcannon I saw on here and I’m running with it-)
Silver: hm.. I honestly say the soft boy aesthetic from 2020-2021 would suit him when he’s not on missions! Soft sweatshirts, a good pair of white slacks, and maybe some white sneakers too! Add a cute satchel and we’re good to go! ^^
Knuckles: same as sonic, but just the masculine parts. Baggy jeans, tank top or short sleeved shirts, and some of his tribe’s jewelry and other accessories to match with the outfit!
Tails: I’d say the steampunk look would suit him best, after all, he’s a mechanic and an engineer! It makes sense why he’d prefer something like steampunk! (Simplified or not is up to you!)
Mephiles: My personal favorite of these headcanons so far. Anything Princey and gothic? He will give it a try! However, goth academia and goth ouji seem to be his favorites! Lots of intricate and beautiful lace, black slacks, masculine corsets, and a cute black and purple parasol to match! (I’ve had this headcanon for a hot minute!)
Scourge: We all know that he has this punk-like style with the leather jacket and sunglasses, but I wanna add onto it! Baggy jeans with sewn on decals from his adventures, a few tattoos, and usually no shirt, to show off his scar. However, if the place does require a shirt, he just either zips up his jacket or wears a white T-shirt.. he probably won’t be happy about it though! ^^||
Nazo: hm.. this is actually a tough one, as I didn’t really think about his general wardrobe. However, I feel like he’d have something for just about every occasion. Something simple and year-round like button up shirts and slacks or dark jeans. Because you can do a lot of styling with those alone, like add on a waistcoat and a suit jacket over the shoulders, and some simple, yet classy gold jewelry!
Seelkadoom: Now, you think that it’d be easy to give seelkadoom a hybrid style between shadow and sonic! Well, you’re half right. While that’s his base style of leather jackets and boots mixed with some jeans, the man fluctuates his style like his customers do with alcohol at the casino he works at! Not to mention work dress codes as well!
King (my OC): he’s kind of the same as nazo, but instead of more quiet luxury, he’s wearing more brand names. Like gucci T-shirts, Louis Vuitton jackets with their LV logo on it, Nike sweatpants, etc. He also sometimes wear those cheap looking $200+ cosplays you see on the internet. He mainly does this to get girls’ attention, but yeah. He’s basically all about being on trends and finding things to turn into trends, whether the others like it or not.

Dreadful Pies- Research
Sweeney Todd Story.
Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a penny dreadful story from 1846, a penny dreadful is a cheap story popular in 19th century England, these stories cost one penny to purchase so they were very affordable. The story follows a barber from London who wants revenge on the corrupt Judge Turpin, who had Sweeney Todd arrested and stole his wife and child. When he arrives back in London after years of imprisonment he starts up his barber shop with the help of Ms. Lovett who owns a pie shop below his barber shop. The pie shop isn't very successful until Sweeney Todd starts killing the customers of the barber shop and putting them into the pies. He met his demise when the smell of all the dead bodies caught the attention of the public and police were sent to investigate.

Ashley Newman created these model pies, but they are not edible. These pies caught the attention of Andrew Fuller, a cake artist, who was inspired to make an edible version of these pies.

Weird Foods
Theres lots of diverse food around the world and some of them are quite unusual. I decided to go down this route with my pie, not gruesome and bloody but unusual and strange as I think it elicits more of reaction by seeing something that is just not right. Some foods that got this reaction from me when researching were:
Stargazey Pie, a pie with fish in it but the fish are poking out of the pastry. I almost did something similar with one of my designs being a severed fish head in a pie.

White Ant Egg Soup, from Loas contains ant eggs, any embryos and baby ants. I also put an embryo in my weird pie so I chose this one because that and it also looks gross and looks like maggots.

Airag is from Mongolia and is fermented horse milk. It's a kind of beer that they make by fermenting horse milk in a slightly alcoholic liquid. They have been drinking this in Mongolia for centuries.

Weird foods are also present in media, especially Sci-Fi. In franchises like Star Wars you have the Mos Espa market place on Tatooine. In Sci-Fi series food will look very different as its apart of the world building, to be as far away from reality as possible to make the idea that they're on another planet strongly come across. And especially on Tatooine, a desert planet the food is going to be whatever little creature they come across.

Nuna Meat from 'The Book of Boba Fett' Chapter 3- The Streets of Mos Espa.
Both fiction and non-fiction can be used as inspiration but I didn't want to make my pie food an alien would eat otherwise it would be justifiable that its weird as its extraterrestrial, so by putting a human baby in the pie instead of an alien creature its recognisable that this food item is meant to exist in our world to make it seem even more gross.
Other stories that contain humans in food are 'Snowpiercer' originally a graphic novel released in 1984 by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette, then adapted into movie by the same title in 2013 starring Chris Evans and then a three season TV show, starting in 2020 and ending in 2022.

The story takes places on a frozen over Earth and the remaining survivors live on a train the Snowpiercer. Although the resident living at the front of the train live in luxury whilst at the back of the train they live in poverty and sometimes have to resort to cannablism to survive, the starving passengers rebel against the rich and selfish and force they're way to the front of the train.

The Platform is a Spanish movies about a prison and each level of the prison is an individual cell with two people. A platform full of food makes its way from the top of the prison to the bottom, but of course by the time the platform reaches the bottom there is no food left so the inmates on the lower levels on the prison have to result to eating themselves or their cellmate

A Review of ‘Spin Me Round’ (2022)

The movie Spin Me Round mixes comedy, romance, and a touch of mystery into an engaging story about an American woman who travels to Italy for a corporate training program and gets involved with the charismatic founder of her company. The film is co-written by Jeff Baena and Alison Brie. Also, it is directed by Baena, who previously collaborated with Brie on films such as The Little Hours (2017) and Horse Girl (2020). The film stars Brie as Amber, a manager for a chain restaurant called Tuscan Grove, which offers customers cheap and bland Italian food. Amber is unhappy with her life in Bakersfield, California, and dreams of escaping to a more exciting and fulfilling one. She gets her opportunity when she wins a trip to Italy to attend a corporate training program at the Tuscan Grove Institute, where she will learn about authentic Italian cuisine and culture. She also hopes to meet Nick (Alessandro Nivola), the founder and CEO of Tuscan Grove, whom she admires and is infatuated with.
However, when Amber arrives in Italy, she realizes things are not what they appear. She is forced to give up her passport to Craig (Ben Sinclair), the shady conference organizer, who puts her and the other managers in a rundown motel instead of a luxurious villa. The training program consists of dull lectures and cooking demonstrations in a conference room, where they are taught how to use pre-packaged ingredients and plastic utensils. Amber is also disappointed by Nick, who turns out to be a manipulative and narcissistic man who uses his charm and fake vulnerability to seduce and exploit her for his own personal benefit. Amber soon finds herself in a whirlwind of intrigue, deception, and unexpected attraction, as she discovers the dark secrets behind Nick’s business and his past.
Spin Me Round is a fun and quirky film that showcases Brie’s comedic talents and chemistry with Nivola, as well as a supporting cast of hilarious actors, such as Molly Shannon, Tim Heidecker, Zach Woods, and Aubrey Plaza. The film also offers a satirical look at the culture of corporate America and its obsession with authenticity and branding, as well as a contrast between the superficiality of Tuscan Grove and the richness of Italian culture. The film does not shy away from showing the darker side of Nick’s personality and his manipulation of Amber and the other managers. Still, it also balances it with moments of genuine emotion and humor.
I observed this movie to be an enjoyable viewing. Despite hovering about the edges of romantic comedies, it does not follow the usual tropes I would expect for the genre. Lately, I’ve been drawn to watch as many independent movies from Allison Brie and Aubrey Plaza as they are in their prime with cranking out the indie pics. I like this movie. It feels simple and direct, not burdened by extravagant “gotcha��� moments or a bloated production budget.
The film premiered at the 2022 South by Southwest Festival on March 12, 2022, with positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. Afterward, it was released later on August 19, 2022, by IFC Films in theaters and by AMC+ subscription service for video on demand.

Best Album of 2023 - Jessie Ware "That! Feels Good!"

By all accounts, the hay days of disco should be far behind us. Back in the ‘70s and early ‘80s, club dance floors sparkled and shined under the illuminating gleam of disco balls; polychromatic floors flashed with a wide array of vivid, eye-catching colors. Mesmerized and seduced by the vibrant, glistening glow that paints the room, and probably under the influence of a shit ton of drugs, people Moonwalked and Macarena’d to Off the Wall and Heart of Glass, throwing their cares to the wind and enjoying the moment. Disco was the perfect soundtrack to losing yourself to the moment; basslines ripped straight from the playbook of funk coalesced with the overwhelmingly rich orchestral aspects of soul and conventional song structures/direct yet breathtaking vocal performances of pop music, usually with lyrical themes of pouring yourself out over a lover. It was music for living for today and not worrying about tomorrow. Blunt and catchy, it’s not difficult to see why disco became such a sought-after sound. But as the era of the disco ball began to fade and the ‘80s began to depart, disco faded out of popularity. It saw a slight renaissance in the early 2000s with the works of Kylie Minogue and Madonna’s Confessions on a Dance Floor, along with the development of nu-disco, which introduced more modern electronic elements into the tried and true disco formula, though that wave of disco revival was short-lived. Aside from that, for nearly three decades, disco fell to the wayside behind other styles of straight-to-the-point popular music like synthpop and dance-pop.

But something magical happened at the turn of the recent decade. A resurgence of ‘80s pop trends began to boil up at the midway point of the 2010s, though really hit a fever pitch in 2019-2021. Some of pop's most substantial names were calling for a revival of the same sounds that populated those glitzy dancefloors all those years ago (i.e. Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia, The Weeknd’s After Hours, Lady Gaga’s Chromatica). But the most surprising part of it all was that the one doing it best wasn’t necessarily the most popular- in fact, it was somebody who wasn’t at the forefront of anybodys' minds. Jessica Lois Ware saw a brief moment of success in the early 2010s with hits like Say You Love Me and Wildest Moments, but the hype behind her quickly began to fade as her typical, and honestly quite generic, R&B aesthetic began to run thin. After dawning a new era beginning in 2018 with a couple of singles though not fully getting the chance to flourish until 2020s' What's Your Pleasure, Jessie Ware began to re-invent herself. How? Through that same disco revivalism that was driving the mainstream.
Though what separated Jessie from the crowd is she was not just paying homage to disco aesthetics by sprinkling disco undertones on songs of more contemporary genres like dance-pop or synthpop- instead, What’s Your Pleasure was a full-blown disco album, no holds barred. It wasn’t just a cheap imitation done by an artist desperately yearning for commercial success, it was evident by the musicianship displayed on What’s Your Pleasure that it was an album built out of love and care for disco. Back-to-back-to-back quality that harkens back to the undeniable grooves of decades past.
That! Feels Good! is not a sister album that merely treads the same ground as What’s Your Pleasure; instead, it feels like an extension of that sound. While Jessie’s vocals on What’s Your Pleasure typically feel a bit restrained to emulate a feeling of sensualness, this record really feels like Jessie’s freeing herself with a more assured and expressive delivery. The luxurious, more maximalist, and even more expansive instrumental palate- bringing in lush, soaring orchestral sections that feel even larger than the orchestral moments on What’s Your Pleasure, flashy brass instrumentation, and influences from house music aplenty- take on a totally separate strand of disco also deviates That! Feels Good! from its predecessor. The more overtly sexual energy That! Feels Good! has compared to any of Jessie’s other material is also quite notable. As many will take notice, That! Feels Good!’s lyrics carry a lot of sexual energy, which are topics deeply tied to the genre of disco. Like disco legends such as Donna Summers that paved the way for her, she marries erotic, lustful themes with more nuanced, lovey-dovey romanticism. This right here is Jessie Ware’s horny album.
That sexual energy is channeled best in the listener’s first taste of the album, the title track, a song about unloosing yourself by putting your responsibilities to the wayside. An undeniably punchy and irresistible bassline akin to Stevie Wonder’s most powerful cuts, bombastic horns, and an ensemble of vocals sexually moaning out the album’s title at the onset of the track, which the artist herself has stated she included to stimulate the feeling of a musical orgy, punctuate Jessie Ware’s vocal elasticity as she does parkour from one melody to another, seducing the listener into a hypnotized state which forces them to bop their head up and down with her gorgeous voice. Vocal layering causes Ware’s vocals to swirl and spiral around your speakers as they tumble over each other, creating this oddly overwhelming feeling that makes it nearly impossible not to groove along to the song. It all culminates in a sexy-ass trumpet solo that will surely make you smile if the rest of the song hasn’t yet.
Free Yourself is yet another liberating song about doing exactly what the title indicates. Cascading pianos reminiscent of Europop circa ABBA and Diva House in the vein of Beyoncé’s Break My Soul are intertwined with a lavish orchestral section backing the song’s emancipating chorus. Vocally, Jessie is really letting it all out here, adding to the song’s themes of unbinding oneself from the restraining shackles of reality. It’s her most ferocious, fiery performance to date; fervid performances are what help differentiate this album from What’s Your Pleasure more than anything else. Whereas What’s Your Pleasure felt like Jessie Ware trying incredibly hard to be the shit- which is not a knock on that masterfully refined record, I actually feel as if it allowed for a more mature, subtle, and controlled album- That! Feels Good! feels like Jessie Ware knows she is the shit. Confidence is key; her dramatic vocals glide over the dazzling assortment of strings and brass on These Lips, and the charmingly child-like “La La La La” refrain on Pearls is sure to capture the listener's ear as it fades in and out with kaleidoscopic color. Yet that newfound confidence also comes instrumentally with Jessie taking an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach to What’s Your Pleasure’s grandiose orchestration; the pounding, bouncy, and consistent house of rhythms of Freak Me Now along with the glamorous trumpets that underscore Shake The Bottle carry just as much flashiness as Jessie’s own performances, the ladder of which has captivating Talking Heads influences aplenty encoded into its DNA.
I cannot end off this review without giving a nod to Begin Again, perhaps the best Jessie Ware song to date. It’s That! Feels Good!’s most unabridged and uncompromised ode to disco; at five and a half minutes, it’s a multifaceted, wild homage that brings the listener back to years of those classic ‘70s dancefloor anthems. Drums heavily influenced by the music of the Brazilian culture, more specifically the sound of Samba, a tropical-sounding piano bridge, and celebratory horns/eloquent strings populating the background all work in tandem to create handily the album’s most infectious grooves. Though Jessie Ware’s vocal splendor delivered in this song really steals the show, it’s truly something to behold. It is her most dynamic and compelling vocal performance yet, perfectly balancing euphoric highs that contain layers of vocals tumbling over one another, each one fighting to be the most noticeable in the mix which makes the song feel all the more untamable, and more lowkey moments where the song calms down while Jessie croons over some more subdued instrumental sections, all before reaching its monumental crescendo where every instrumental and vocal element that has been building up coalesce in an intense explosion of groovy magnificence. Begin Again really captures the spirit of the entirety of That! Feels Good!; it’s a collection of instrumentally dense, lyrically carefree songs where every track sounds like it has had hours on top of hours spent on it just to make sure it’s as thoughtful of a tribute to the sound of disco as possible. Stop being that old pretentious asshole for a minute and enjoy some fun music for once; That! Feels Good!’s sure to get a couple of good head-bops out of even its most reluctant listeners.

Let’s not forget what several years worth of Pew Research studies taught us:
Computers (or smartphones) are no longer a hobby or luxury, but a virtual necessity to do everything in American society; apply for jobs, do jobs (if working from home), organize childcare, take classes, organize schoolwork, do research, manage banking and finances, send and receive money, sell things, manage medical appointments (often through apps) and prescriptions, on top of communication with your family, your child’s teachers, your caseworker, etc.
The phone company isn’t exactly running fiber internet to people in tents, are they?
In areas with poor broadband access, your phone is the internet for many people. This contributes to the “digital divide” and why, IMHO, the USPS should get into the broadband business and serve those underserved areas with subsidized connections.
I was shocked how cheap TVs had become. I got a 4K OLED for less than my old 1080p LCD cost. A basic 24” Insignia 720p TV can be had, as of September 2023, for $79.
What this illustrates is the difference between commodities and positional goods. As we saw during the pandemic, supply lines for manufactured items were constrained, causing prices to temporarily rise, but overall, the price of consumer electronics have fallen sharply year-over-year, or have gotten much more powerful for the same price. The internal design of many products has become simplified, with functions that used to require multiple discrete microprocessors now absorbed into so-called “systems on a chip” or SoCs.

If that were true for housing, we’d all be living in automated mansions that cost $100.
However, housing is a positional good.
While I occupy a house in a desirable, walkable neighborhood with access to transit, somebody else cannot. I have to vacate this unit for someone else to get it. People cannot just buy their way into this neighborhood if nobody’s selling.
Due to geography, zoning, infrastructure limits and other factors, the number of such desirable units is limited and thus they become more expensive to buy or rent.
Add all the other factors - Airbnbs, private equity, and flippers taking units off the market, nimby resistance to new denser housing, and disinvestment in public housing, and you have a perfect storm of unaffordability.
The only solution, really, is to institute strong market controls to end speculation, end institutional Airbnb hoarding, put in rent controls, and build way more public and cooperative housing that’s off the market.

Fast Fashion and Environmental Impact
What is ‘Fast Fashion'?
The phrase 'fast fashion' is increasingly mentioned in discussions about fashion, sustainability, and environmental awareness. It describes the rapid production of low-cost clothing that imitates the latest runway trends and is quickly distributed to stores to capitalize on current fashion trends (Maiti 2024).

The term was first used at the beginning of the 1990s when Zara landed in New York (Rauturier 2023). “Fast fashion” was coined by the New York Times to describe Zara’s mission to take only 15 days for a garment to go from the design stage to being sold in stores (Lai 2021).
Environmental Impact
Fashion is more than just a means of expression, it is an industry that significantly impacts our planet. Fashion is the second leading field in terms of emissions causing environmental pollution, and the impact on the environment of this industry is increasingly serious (Niinimäki et al. 2020). According to the UN Environment Programme (2019), the industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for about 10% of global carbon emissions. Fast fashion exacerbates these issues, consuming 1.5 trillion liters of water each year and accounting for nearly 20% of industrial water pollution (Global Fashion Agenda and The Boston Consulting, 2017).

Furthermore, brands use synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and acrylic which take hundreds of years to biodegrade. A report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (2017) estimated that 35% of all microplastics – tiny pieces of non-biodegradable plastic – in the ocean come from the laundering of synthetic textiles like polyester.
Vietnam's Role in the Fast Fashion Industry
In Vietnam, fast fashion is gaining a strong foothold in the hearts of consumers. Especially in the age of technology 4.0, when young people spend a lot of time shopping for cheap clothes on e-commerce platforms. In 2022, the number of e-commerce users in Vietnam recorded around 57 million, indicating a year-on-year growth since 2018. That year, Vietnam's e-commerce market value reached approximately 16.4 billion U.S. dollars (Statista 2022).

The revenue of fast fashion brands such as Zara and H&M increases every year. Zara's revenue in three years (2016 to 2018) increased from 320 billion VND to 1700 billion VND. Particularly in the Vietnamese market, where people’s income is not high, fashion brands listed as “Fast Fashion” are still luxury brands. The business results of fashion brands Zara and H&M demonstrate how attractive the potential of the Vietnamese fashion market is for international brands (Manh Hung 2022).

According to a study, 27% of Vietnamese consumers keep clothes for less than a year before throwing them away, compared to China's 23%, Australia's 4%, Hong Kong's 6%, and Singapore’s 6% (YouGov 2017). Thus, compared to other countries in the region, Vietnam has a higher rate of reusing clothes, but the amount discharged into the environment is still of concern. Currently, plastic waste in Vietnam is increasing significantly, with the contribution of fashion waste (Manh Hung 2022).
The Need for Sustainable Policies and Practices
In the National Strategy on Climate Change, Vietnam has announced the goal of cutting emissions by 43.5% by 2030, setting emissions targets for each sector. To achieve this goal, Vietnam has issued many legal documents and proposed policies related to emission reduction issues associated with the net zero emissions target by 2050 (Prime Minister 2022).
The 2020 Law on Environmental Protection is the most important legal document in Vietnam’s strategy to reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, the Government of Vietnam also issued Decision No. 2053/QD-TTg on the Plan to implement the Paris Agreement on climate change, directly regulating the field of greenhouse gas emission reduction with Decree No. 06/2022/ND-CP dated January 7, 2022, regulations on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the Ozone layer.

Raise Awareness Among the Younger Generation
One of the most effective ways to combat the environmental impact of fast fashion is through education and awareness. Young consumers, who are the primary market for fast fashion, need to understand the environmental footprint of their shopping habits. By promoting sustainable fashion choices and encouraging a shift from quantity to quality, we can foster a culture that values durability and environmental responsibility.

Support Local and Sustainable Fashion
Promoting local fashion brands that prioritize sustainability can also make a significant difference. Vietnamese local brands such as Moi Dien, Dong Sai Gon, and Tim Tay are more likely to have shorter supply chains, reducing their overall carbon footprint. Supporting these brands can also boost the local economy and provide more environmentally friendly options for consumers.

Bin Bags, Bed Sheets and Balenciaga

In recent years athleisure wear has become a fast growing trend amongst the rich and the poor. I remember as a child my mother telling me wearing a tracksuit or leggings outside of the house looked lazy, tacky and unkept. The recent trend has changed my own mind about this, but I do recognise I have bais’ and so do a vast majority of people. 2020 saw the rise of the “chav check” trend on Tik-Tok, where people would dress in orange make, tracksuits with messy hair and impersonate British “chavs”. Basically people were just mocking working class British teenage girls. I grew up surrounded by girls like this, who fake tanned, had thick eyebrows and wore their Adidas leggings and Nike Air Max with pride. I looked up to these girls, I was pretty intimidated by them too and honestly for a while I tried to be them. But to see how the global media has mocked them and their style is so disheartening. It seems as though working class women cannot dress in any type of way without being called trashy, cheap and common. Whereas Kim Kardashian can be caked in makeup, wearing legging and puffer jackets and be called a trend setter.

For my last entry of this series I am going to look at Balenciaga and how they incorporate many aspects of the “chav” style and sell it as luxury, innovative and trendy clothes. Their recent Fall Winter 2024 show was held on a street in  L.A and most of the models wore tracksuits and leggings. There were some interesting aspects of exaggerated tailoring, but for the purpose of this review I won't be discussing this. The show began with a shirtless model wearing shorts and oversized trainers, which set the tone for the first portion of the show. 
As I mentioned most of the models adorned tracksuits and legging style outfits. There was a recreation of the Juicy Couture velour tracksuit, which if I remember correctly was another fashion statement that was considered gaudy and distasteful. The models pranced down the street in these varying outfits, from oversized ill fitting tracksuits to the tight body suits that resemble something I have seen on Shein.

Balenciaga is very much a fashion house that is based on hype trends and creating conversations around their pieces. They were after all the brand that chose to completely cover Kim Kardashian for the Met Ball in 2021, which stirred a lot of conversation. Now this is great if you are someone who can afford to keep up with these trends, and have the designer logo on your new leggings or catsuit. But most of us cannot and when we look for cheaper alternatives we are judged by those who can afford it. I myself remember seeing a woman in Schipol airport, wearing a form fitting lycra catsuit, and I internally judged her for this. I thought to myself, “why do people think this looks good” , then I opened instagram and saw Miss Kardashian herself wearing pretty much the same outfit, but it was designer so therefore better. I write this now acknowledging the bais I projected on this girl at Gate G4, and to her I am truly sorry for this.

But I also write from a critical point of view of these fashion houses, who create trends that are only accessible when you can afford them. 
  Even one of the more interesting pieces of the collection was a dress that resembled a bin back, in black and a bed sheet, in white. It was fabricated in a way that made it look like the model had no option but to wrap herself in a bin bag or her bed sheet in an effort to stop herself from being nude. As I said this is probably the most interesting piece of the entire show, but when you consider the show is set on the streets of L.A, it's a little bit less digestible. L.A currently has an ongoing homelessness crisis with an estimate of over 75 thousand people experiencing homelessness in 2023 alone. This idea of presenting a piece of clothing that looks like the model had nothing else to wear, on the streets of a city full of homeless people is tone dead.

They had celebrity models featured in the show such as Cardi B. She wore, admittedly, a fabulous faux fur jacket. But her makeup was done in the stereotypical Chola style. Chola is an aesthetic that is often associated with the Mexican population of California, specifically the middle and working class women. Cardi B has received criticism throughout her career for her past as a stripper and has been called cheap throughout. Perhaps Balenciaga were trying to have her reclaim her power as an Afro-Latina artist, but to me it reads as performative and costumey.

For most of this series I have looked at how fashion houses have incorporated styles from the middle and working class population and sold them as innovative ideas. Balenciaga, do this a lot. They play into this aesthetic too, by producing a boring tracksuit bottom, slapping a label on it and selling it for upwards of 500 euro. I mean lest we forget this is the brand that created the duct taped shoes and sold them for over 800 euro. So they are surely aware of their influences from mainstream or working class clothes trends. They play into modern consumer culture by creating pieces that already feed into pre-existing popular trends, but make them desirable to those who want to stay on top of popular trends. I don’t think Balenciaga is the problem here, I think that there is an overarching theme of luxury brands creating collections that derive obvious inspiration from the working class. These brands don't call it for what it is, instead they hide it by calling it a “reinvention of….” or “inspired by the seedy underbelly”. It's tiring, it’s boring and honestly it’s just unfair.
 Popular brands take inspiration from working class women yet the majority of the media ridicule these same women for their appearance, their clothing choices and lifestyle. We need to see a change, in either how we as consumers consume or how we as a society react to working class aesthetics. I admitted in this review my own bias and I think this is something that I hope more and more people will start to recognise in themselves. I also hope that this trend of celebrities and rich people trying to seem relatable dies down, but that seems unattainable. My personal mission for you is to consume more critically, really look at what designers are presenting as “new” and dont fall for the fancy words and tricks.

3rd semester into college I was taking 4 classes, and while I liked all of them I mainly connected with my macroeconomics professor. She taught me a lot about fraud & encouraged me to pursue my passion for stock trading (which I had been doing on my computer during my classes anyway).
Luckily she connected me with one of her friends who was a wealth manager in Houston. This person wanted, mainly, cheap $15/hr college labor, but also sent me down a great path.
Which is to say-- away from gambling on the stock market and into learning how to "invest like the best".
I actually got suspended after that semester. I learned plenty from all 4 of the classes but I'm a shitty test taker and relied on sucking up to pass too many prior classes on failing test scores. Can only suck up to so many professors. I failed the other 3 classes after having an A/B record and they suspended me (because "elite" schools are stressful af dont get me started)
So my childhood best friend (also in finance but focused on day trading strategy more than economics) and I went and started a business.
Unfortunately my rent money was tied up in Rice's financial aid and I already signed a lease when they booted me. As in, they took away the $6000 to cover my personal expenses past tuition I was expecting the very next week. So our business had a lot of costs that it needed to cover right off the bat.
This was also January 2020... so. Yeah, that business didnt go great. We started with cheap (dirt cheap) financial analysis and business plans. Another friend who just graduated in marketing offered to advise on ads, so we spent about $500 on google ads and got a couple clients but only 1 was recurring as they really liked our methodology for drafting luxury residential construction based business plans.
We realized that the COVID shutdowns (economic recession) were not a good time for finance. People just weren't doing things that required our services.
So we became a marketing firm and got to work relearning everything
