Thanks for sharing! I prefer traveling solo for the same reasons you do! :) Do you happen to know any websites or tricks for doing it cheaply? All the budget traveling sites I see package their deals per person based on double occupancy rooms as the default, so being a single traveler typically doubles the price. :/ Hope you have yourself an awesome trip!
Well, I started traveling on my own before the bulk of the internet existed, so I've always just homebrewed it. I don't think I've ever done a package tour. I know people who have, and really enjoyed it as a struggle-free way to see the world, but I tend to have specific and unusual goals. I do know that there is a whole culture of couchsurfing -- I knew someone who belonged to a couchsurfing website and traveled Europe that way for very cheap -- but I've never investigated it.
Usually when I'm going somewhere I have an idea of something I want to see, so that's where I start -- where's the zoo/museum/restaurant I want to visit? Can I stay near there cheaply? If not, where can I stay within transit access? Once I have housing sorted I look at what else is around where I'm staying and the places I already want to go, and I build an agenda from there.
The only site I use for direct tourism research (as opposed to like, Google Maps or local transit sites) is Atlas Obscura, which has an index by region of cool stuff to do. I look at Atlas Obscura to see if there's anything I shouldn't miss, and I also often google stuff like "[region] local foods" or "[region] art museums" or whatnot. Because I don't like driving, I study public transit in the area using Maps, although lately I don't worry as much about that as long as the area I'm traveling to has cabs/rideshare.
The first time I visited Boston, when I was 19, I had heard about the Great Molasses Flood, and I'd read that the best place to see where it happened is from Copp's Hill Burial Ground on top of a hill in the North End. That also sounded cool, and I scheduled a day to start at Copp's Hill and follow the Freedom Trail south afterward (this also ultimately involved me nearly getting arrested for breaking into a cemetery, but I got away). Following the Freedom Trail led me to some unexpected sights too, like the Holocaust Memorial north of Fanieul Hall. I derailed a portion of my morning to explore that, which was fine, I didn't really need to see the entire Freedom Trail and I picked it back up again later.
So for me solo travel is equal parts "Well, I know what I want to see" and the serendipity of discovery. There are a couple of days on the Europe trip where I have at least some free time for resting or rambling as I see fit. Meanwhile, I'm going in search of weird old bakeries and crepes and frites and Carciofi alla Giudia and the random Irish pub in Rome and an occult bookstore Neil Gaiman recommended near the British Museum -- but who knows what I'm actually going to find?
(Hopefully treasure. I'm going mudlarking on the Thames one morning.)

The Gatwick Incident, 1966
London. 20th July, 1966
On the morning of July 20th, 1966 flight 729 returned from Madrid to Gatwick airport, only to be forced to abort its attempted landing due to an obstruction on the intersections of runways five and two. The pilot reported the presence of a police box on the runway, prompting air traffic control to dispatch police. Police chased away four strangers, and the police box was collected from the runway. Control initially believed it to be the product of a practical joke. If only they knew what they were in for that day…
If you were a student in 1966 looking for a cheap gap year, Chameleon Tours were your best budget option. For just £28, Chameleon Tours offered people between the ages of 18-25 a package holiday to any one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe: Zurich, Rome, Athens, Dubrovnik, and Freiburg, Madrid, and Baden-Württemberg. It was a popular choice, with 50000 young people taking to Europe from Gatwick via Chameleon Tours, who operated four of their own planes from the airport.
Fifty-thousand young adults left Gatwick for various European flights, and not a single one returned. One of those people was Ryan Briggs, who took a Chameleon Tours flight to Rome. Everything seemed normal to his family at first. Ryan caught his flight, and sent back a hand-written postcard shortly after arriving. However, that was the last the Briggs family heard from Ryan for some time. His sister, Samantha Briggs, implored the authorities for help, but was unable to get anywhere with them. She contacted the hotel at which Ryan was supposed to be staying, only to find he had never checked in. Police in Rome found no trace of a Ryan Briggs, and neither did Rome's international airport. Inspector Gascoigne was the first to take Samantha's worries seriously and, on the 20th of July, arrived at Gatwick to investigate. While airport security was dealing with the matter of a police box and four trespassers, Gascoigne was investigating the private Chameleon Tours hangar. That is where his corpse was later found, his clothes singed as though he somehow died by electrocution.
A police box on a runway, a missing young man, and a murdered police officer. You would think things were already as strange as they were going to get, but you'd be wrong. Two people arrived at Immigration and Customs attempting to report a dead body. They arrived with no passports, despite coming from the arrivals gate. One was a scruffy-looking gentleman in a frock coat and the other a boy with a Scots accent wearing a kilt. When interviewed by journalist James Stevens, Samantha Briggs would describe the scruffy-looking man's accent as "blurred," and referred to him as "a short man with a mournful face and dishevelled clothing." He seemed to her to be "incredibly well informed." Everyone seemed to call the man "Doctor," as though it were more of a name than a title. The Scots boy wearing the kilt went by the more conventional name of Jamie. Curiously, a white-haired man also calling himself "Doctor" was present with Sir Charles Summer in South Kensington at the time, seemingly involved with the on-going War Machine threat caused by the activation of WOTAN.
The airport manager, Charles Gordon, was called to satisfy the Doctor's demands to see a figure of authority about the body, and escorted the mystery man and Jamie to the Chameleon Tours hanger, where they found nothing more than a crate of plastic cups. Unamused by the Doctor's claims, Gordon tried to have trespassers arrested, only for them to escape.
It was around this time that Samantha Briggs arrived at the Chameleon Tours kiosk to make enquiries about her missing brother Ryan Briggs. She found the representitive entirely unhelpful but ended up meeting with Jamie, who promised that he had a friend who might know how to help her, and mysteriously asked that they meet later. It was Samantha that made an important discovery in the case of the missing passengers - Chameleon Tours had their customers fill out postcards before leaving on their flight. The postcards were collected at the kiosk, sent out to Chameleon Tours facilities at the country the flights were supposed to go to, and then posted back by Chameleon Tours to the families in the UK as if from the passengers. Meanwhile, Detective Inspector Crossland arrived in search of his missing collegue: Detective Gasgoigne.
Inspector Crossland was able to convince Charles Gordon to humour the Doctor further, and it appears some members of Gatwick staff were starting to come around as it was the manager's assistant Jean Rock who made the next key discovery. Having called around the various international airports to which Chameleon Tours were chartering flights, she discovered that Chameleon Tours only ever picked up passengers but never dropped them off. It was as though the passengers disappeared mid-flight.
Gatwick usually only monitors flights for around fifty miles before they drop off the radar, otherwise they would have too much traffic to monitor. It was not unusual that Chameleon Tours flights disappeared from their radars after fifty miles, as they simply weren't looking that far. Manager Gordon could not have expected to see what he did when he requested the RAF to tail the 1530 to Rome, however. As the Chameleon Tours flight to Rome reached the edge of expanded radar range, the RAF jet was seen to go completely out of control and crash into the sea, disappearing from radar. The Chameleon Tours flight then appeared to stop moving, something that could only indicate that it was dropping straight down. The plane then disappeared off radar.
The initial assumption was that the two aircraft had collided, dropping into the ocean. When rescue services found the wreckage, however, there was only wreckage of the RAF fighter jet and no sign of the 1530 to Rome. The pilot was found electrocuted in his seat. So where did the Chameleon Tours flight go? Where do all the Chameleon Tours flights go? Perhaps the plane did not drop out of the sky, but instead shot directly upwards beyond the scope of radar, into space. Maybe that sounds farfetched, but how else do you explain an aeroplane hovering in the same spot on radar but without leaving wreckage in the sea below? Admittedly, many wrecks are lost at sea, but then how do you reconcile the fact that the RAF flight, which went down at the same time, was found while the Chameleon Tours flight was not?
Let's break down what was happening. Chameleon Tours planes would leave from Gatwick carrying a cabin filled with young people. They would fly fifty miles out of the UK and disappear. The flight would then return without passengers. Postcards from the passengers, filled out before the flight, would be sent to the plane's supposed destination and then posted back to the UK to make it appear as if the passengers arrived safely. But to what end?
The reports of DI Crossland simply refer to "holiday fraud," and while there are no police reports regarding the recovery of the fifty-thousand missing people, they started to turn up on delayed flights for the rest of the evening, trickling back into society as if they hadn't gone missing at all. Twenty-five members of staff at Gatwick airport recall waking up lying on the concrete in the carpark, missing hours of time with no recollection of how they got there.
Some theorise that Chameleon Tours were a cover for a human trafficking ring and even though they were busted the whole thing was covered up so London's second biggest international airport could save face. Others theorise that it was a money laundering front involving simply moving the same group of people around to make the company look busier than it really was. More outlandish theories include Chameleon Tours being a result of C-Day and the computer WOTAN trying to wipe out humanity, a system of alien abductions replacing people with shapeshifting duplicates, and a government test of international security where they abducted real people and wiped their memories before returning them later.
Whatever the truth was behind Chameleon Tours, there are plenty of witnesses to the presence of "the Doctor" and it features one of the most convincing blue box sightings in history as it comes from a pilot.

How to Book Flights for a Wildlife Tour
Book cheap flight tickets and hotels- https://trailtravelz.com/
Planning a wildlife tour can be exhilarating, but booking flights that align with your adventure can often be challenging. Whether you're heading to the savannas of Africa or the rainforests of South America, here’s a comprehensive guide on how to book flights for a wildlife tour that ensures a seamless journey from takeoff to touchdown.
Research Your Destination
Begin by researching your destination’s peak wildlife viewing seasons. Understanding the best times to visit can help you snag affordable flights and witness nature at its most vibrant. For instance, safaris in Africa might be best during the dry season, while bird-watching in Costa Rica peaks during specific migration months.
Flexible Travel Dates
Flexibility is key when booking flights for a wildlife tour. Use flight comparison websites that allow you to view fares across an entire month or even a year. Often, adjusting your travel dates by a few days can lead to significant savings, which you can then allocate towards enhancing your wildlife experience.
Direct vs. Connecting Flights
Consider the trade-offs between direct and connecting flights. Direct flights minimize travel time and reduce the risk of missing connections, ideal for wildlife tours where timing is crucial. On the other hand, connecting flights might offer cost savings or provide opportunities to explore additional destinations en route to your wildlife adventure.
Airline Partnerships and Rewards Programs
Explore airline partnerships and frequent flyer programs that could earn you miles or points for future travel. Some airlines offer specific wildlife tour packages or partnerships with conservation organizations, providing unique travel experiences while supporting wildlife preservation efforts.
Packing Essentials for Wildlife Tours
When booking flights, consider the baggage policies and pack accordingly. Wildlife tours often require specialized gear such as binoculars, camera equipment, and lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for outdoor excursions. Check the airline’s restrictions and allowances for carrying wildlife observation equipment.
Booking Tips and Resources
Utilize online travel agencies, which often offer competitive prices and comprehensive search filters tailored to wildlife enthusiasts. Additionally, consider booking directly with airlines to take advantage of exclusive deals or promotional offers specifically tailored to wildlife tour destinations.
Conclusion
Booking flights for a wildlife tour involves careful planning and consideration of factors such as destination seasons, travel flexibility, flight routes, and packing essentials. By leveraging these tips, you can ensure a smooth journey that maximizes your wildlife viewing opportunities and enhances your overall travel experience.

Whether you plan for a Caribbean beach vacation or enjoy your long-haul holiday at the sprawling beaches of Miami- start checking out the available flights to Miami from London in the same way you will search for the airline companies offering flights to Bangkok on the expected dates.
Presently, the top search engines provide flight-searching options. Categorized as one of the simplest international flight searching tools, these online platforms offer the most accurate and cheap flight to Bangkok to flights to Australia from London or any other destination that you search for.
Pre-book international flights online
Among countless features, you can also book international flight tickets 11 months before the journey date and grab your favourite seats. Get additional discounts on round-way flights. Usually, tourists prefer pre-booking round-way flights because they have to get back by the mentioned times in most scenarios. However, if the flight gets cancelled- the passengers are compensated as per the company rules.
Go through popular aggregator web platforms
Most passengers prefer booking their flight tickets online and they mostly prefer OTAs or a popular aggregator web platform to buy their tickets for international flights to Bali from UK, Bangkok, European countries, the USA, South Africa or any destination across the globe.
Witness multiple feasibilities of booking flight tickets from a reputed aggregator web platform whether it’s a website or app. From comparing the available flights to the number of overlays, explore all the necessary details about each available flight before you decide which one you should go for.
Know about the lucky cheap flying days
Online international flight booking people are well aware of Happy Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays when they can book international flight tickets at quite a discounted rate.
According to cynics, it’s a myth, you can try your fate by searching for the flights on these available days before booking tickets as some jaw-dropping offers are available on these days and the fortunate shoppers grab these deals.
To get instant intimation on the flight deals, sign up for the newsletters. The email intimation will help you notice the offers the concerned flight companies or the aggregator sites are offering then and there!
Target the shoulder season for attractive international flight deals
Considering the weather the region experiences, you can book your tickets to receive massive discounts and jaw-dropping deals on international flights during the shoulder seasons. However, if you intend to fly to Australia, New Zealand or anywhere in Oceania the spring will be from mid-October to March while the countries in the Northern Hemisphere experience winter. So, do take a quick look at that before you book the flight tickets and spend more to buy a packaged tour.
The priority of any vacationer is to experience balanced weather whether they travel or decide on their trip accordingly. You cannot plan a vacation to Dubai in May to avoid the scorching heat. Likewise, you’ll not plan a trip to Switzerland in December unless you are dying to see snowfall in the Swiss Alps!
Use the loyalty points
If you’re a part of any loyalty program of any airline company then while booking your next flight tickets, redeem the collected points so far for the discount. Using the loyalty points can help you save more on your next flight to Bangkok.
These are a couple of things you must do besides booking a 100% customized packaged trip to Bangkok if you would like to experience a hassle-free vacation in this Asian destination including sightseeing tours, rental cars etc.

Week 1: Navigating Around
Hello! Welcome to this week's blog on adapting to Shanghai and navigating around SJTU campus. With my terrible navigation skills and flawed adaptability to new environments, the first week feels like a rollercoaster ride. Defeated feelings of loneliness and self-doubt eventually vanished as I got more comfortable with new friends and learned my way around campus. That’s when the excitement of exploring Shanghai picked up and took over the trill. For this week’s blog, I’m aiming to be more detailed and informative on how I settled into my new home here.
Day 1: I hugged tight onto three packages of bedding sets at the lobby of the international student dormitory, my sole wish at the moment was a much-needed nap. With the help of JI student volunteers, I filled out forms, set up my face ID, and downloaded a very important app called My SJTU. It has a QR code called Siyuan Code with si translated to miss and yuan meaning origin. We use it to enter our dorm, campus gates, and libraries. The app contains many services, including dorm electricity billing, library seats and shuttle bus reservations, dining dollars, etc. Interestingly, half of the app is in Mandarin and the other half is translated to English. I quickly overlooked the details when I finally entered my room on the 11th floor.
The suite was way better than any housing I could hope for at Ann Arbor, prettier than South Quad and more furnished than my apartment on Central Campus. We were lucky to get our own private bedroom with a huge sitting deck in front of the window that captures the sunrise every morning. Hungry and exhausted from the flight to unpack, I joined my cousin Christine in the search for food. We looked up restaurants near us on Gaode Map and found that the nearest restaurant and literally everything is at least a thirty minute walk from our dorm. So I gave up on dinner, headed straight to bed on an empty stomach, and got a full 12 hours of sleep. My body requested a replenishing sleep, and I was still deep in sleep when my suitemate Gracie arrived. Oopsy.
At first, I was overwhelmed by the prospect of walking long distances to eat or go to classes. It is as if I’m stranded on an island, and the thought of isolation discouraged me. The next morning, I finally met Gracie and discovered the conveniences of our dorm. Fortunately, there is a cafeteria on the basement floor and I had steamed meat buns and hard boiled eggs for breakfast. Next to the parking garage, there is also a convenience store, package room, laundry room, and a gym. All the basic amenities except the kitchen are provided. If I wanted to explore more food options, I need to find a way to go outside of this neighborhood.
This is a typical breakfast from the cafeteria in the basement downstairs.
The blue Hellobikes are my solution for cutting the time to campus down to a 20 minute bike ride. They are commonly found on the sidewalks and can be scanned through the Hello app. I purchased the unlimited monthly plan using Alipay with my grandpa’s Chinese bank card. Without family connection, Alipay can also be set up with foreign bank cards, with additional foreign charge for every transaction.
The first weekend’s schedule was dominated by buddy group events. With my buddy’s help, we began checkmarking our to-do list, completing student registrations and applications for bank cards. On Saturday, we had a campus tour and visited the main libraries, a souvenir store, and popular campus sites. We also had lunch at Canteen Two. It’s bigger than South Quad’s dining hall and has more food stations with three floors to explore. There’s a total of seven canteens on campus and I plan to try out all of them. Yay, we’re back to the dining hall exploration era! The meal I had was very cheap after converting it to USD. With the ratio of USD to Chinese Yuan being 7 to 1, I was satiated at a little over $2 USD.
A tiny peek of our beautiful campus.
This is one of the two libraries that we visited. After we entered the building using the student Siyuan Code, we entered the quiet zone. The library vibes clearly didn’t match ours as we walked around leisurely and took pictures of the pretty spiral staircase. With the weekend almost over and classes starting on Monday, I would be joining the students in the quiet study tables soon but I was relieved to be just a tourist that day.
Here's the second library on the SJTU campus, and the front yard is home to a flock of pigeons. I haven’t seen any squirrels in Shanghai, but there are very well-fed pigeons and we were lucky to see two elegant black swans!
My first coffee with my buddy group at Manner’s Coffee. I wanted to try something US doesn't have, so I got the osmanthus (guihua) flavored latte. It was very delicious with a strong flower fragrance.
My first boba tea at HeyTea.
After our buddy events ended, many of us couldn't wait to explore Shanghai. Within the first week, I visited several shopping malls, took the subway to the city and walked around Nanjing Road (a famous shopping district), and had a fun adventure at Shanghai Disney. There are many methods of transportation here, and many are accessible with mobile phones. The must have app is WeChat which I associate as the equivalent of iMessage, Instagram, Uber, and ApplePay combined, with many more useful services offered. Mobile pay have taken over cash and physical credit cards as the dominant payment method in China, so I used WeChat pay for most of my purchases. To navigate around, I use Gaode Map, and it conveniently lists the car hailing services and their prices. After getting to know my way around here, the sprawling city no longer intimidates me and Shanghai becomes so much funner.
As a poor navigator and adaptor to new places, I'm lucky to find groups who are welcoming and equally excited, if not more, enthusiastic to explore the city together. The journey is gaining momentum as classes begin and next week's content will touch on school life in Shanghai. See you all next week!
