Discovering Thailand: Your Ultimate Travel Guide
Tumblr media
Thailand, the Land of Smiles, is a captivating Southeast Asian gem that beckons travelers from around the world with its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine. From bustling metropolises to tranquil beaches and lush jungles, Thailand has it all. In this travel guide, we'll take you on a journey through the essentials of planning an unforgettable trip to this enchanting destination.
Preparation Before Visiting Thailand
Before embarking on your Thai adventure, there are several key preparations to make. Firstly, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date. Next, consider travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellations. Vaccinations might be required, so check with your healthcare provider for the latest recommendations.
Thailand's currency is the Thai Baht (THB), so having some local currency in cash is handy for small expenses. Additionally, familiarize yourself with Thai customs and traditions to show respect to the locals.
How to Get a Visa and Other Required Documents
Most tourists can enter Thailand without a visa for stays of up to 30 days (or 45 days, depending on nationality). However, if you plan to stay longer, you may need a tourist visa. You can apply for one at a Thai embassy or consulate in your home country. Make sure to check the specific requirements for your nationality and the latest updates on visa policies.
You'll need a valid passport, passport-sized photos, a completed visa application form, and proof of sufficient funds for your stay. Visa processing times can vary, so apply well in advance.
Places to Visit in Thailand
Thailand boasts a plethora of incredible destinations, each offering a unique experience. Bangkok, the vibrant capital, is a bustling metropolis where modernity meets tradition. Explore the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and sample street food delights at Chatuchak Market.
The northern city of Chiang Mai is a haven for culture and adventure. Visit ancient temples, take part in a traditional Thai cooking class, and embark on a trek through the lush hills of Northern Thailand.
The southern islands, like Phuket and Koh Samui, offer stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant nightlife. Don't forget to explore the stunning Phi Phi Islands for a taste of paradise.
Places to Visit in Small Towns
While Thailand's major cities are enchanting, don't overlook the charm of its small towns. Pai, nestled in the mountains of Northern Thailand, is a hippie haven known for its natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere. Amphawa, a small canal town, offers an authentic glimpse into Thai life with its floating markets and riverside houses.
Personal Vehicle or Public Transport?
Thailand's well-developed public transportation system makes it easy to explore the country without a personal vehicle. Trains, buses, and domestic flights connect major cities and tourist destinations efficiently and affordably. Tuk-tuks and songthaews are popular for short distances within towns.
However, if you crave the freedom to explore remote areas, renting a car or motorbike is an option. Ensure you have an international driving permit (IDP) and are aware of local traffic rules.
Booking Couchsurfing or Cheap Hotels
For budget-conscious travelers, Thailand offers a plethora of accommodation options. Hostels, guesthouses, and budget hotels are readily available in popular tourist areas. Booking websites like Agoda, Booking.com, and Hostelworld are excellent resources for finding affordable stays.
Couchsurfing is also an option for those seeking a more immersive experience. Connect with locals and fellow travelers, staying with hosts who open their homes to guests for free.
Renting a Vehicle as a Tourist
Renting a vehicle in Thailand is straightforward, but it's essential to do so from a reputable company. Rental agencies typically require a valid driver's license and an IDP, which you can obtain in your home country before your trip.
Whether you're renting a car, motorbike, or bicycle, ensure you're familiar with local traffic regulations and have the necessary insurance.
Trekking and Solo Camping
Thailand's diverse landscapes make it an ideal destination for trekking and camping enthusiasts. Head to Chiang Mai for jungle treks that lead to remote hill-tribe villages. Khao Sok National Park in southern Thailand offers opportunities for camping amidst lush rainforests and serene lakes.
Always plan ahead, check for necessary permits, and follow safety guidelines when trekking or camping solo in Thailand's wilderness.
Applying for an International Driving License in Thailand
If you plan to rent a vehicle in Thailand, ensure you have an international driving permit Thailand (IDP) before arriving. To obtain an IDP, visit your local automobile association or government office in your home country. It's a straightforward process that usually requires valid identification, a small fee, and a recent passport-sized photo.
With your IDP in hand, you're ready to explore Thailand's breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture at your own pace.
Thailand is a land of endless exploration, where tradition and modernity coexist in perfect harmony. By following these preparations and tips, you'll be well-equipped to embark on an unforgettable journey through this captivating country. From bustling cities to remote jungles, Thailand promises a diverse and enriching travel experience that will leave you with lasting memories and a genuine appreciation for the Land of Smiles.

Thailand Unveiled: A Traveler’s Handbook for Adventure and Discovery
Tumblr media
Thailand, the Land of Smiles, is a mesmerizing destination that promises adventure, culture, and natural beauty. Before embarking on your Thai adventure, there are several crucial aspects to consider, from preparations and visa requirements to transportation options and off-the-beaten-path experiences.
Preparation Before Visiting Thailand
Preparation is key to a successful trip to Thailand. Start by checking your passport's validity, ensuring it doesn't expire within six months of your planned arrival. It's also wise to research the local customs and culture, so you can respect local traditions. Additionally, consult your doctor for recommended vaccinations and carry a basic medical kit. Don't forget to purchase travel insurance to protect yourself in case of unexpected situations.
Visa and Other Required Documents
Most travelers to Thailand can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. However, for longer stays, you will need a tourist visa. Visit the Thai embassy or consulate in your country to apply for one. Prepare documents such as your passport, a completed visa application form, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds. Always check the latest visa requirements as they may change.
Places to Visit in Thailand
Thailand boasts a diverse range of attractions. In bustling Bangkok, explore the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, home to the iconic reclining Buddha. Discover the ancient city of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and relax on the stunning beaches of Phuket and Krabi. Don't miss the cultural richness of Chiang Mai and the vibrant markets of Chiang Rai.
Places to Visit in Small Towns
While major cities are captivating, Thailand's small towns offer a unique charm. Consider visiting Pai for its laid-back vibe, Chiang Khan for its riverside beauty, and Sukhothai for its historical significance. These towns provide an authentic glimpse into Thai life and culture.
Personal Vehicle vs. Public Transport
Exploring Thailand can be done by personal vehicle or public transport. While driving can offer more freedom, it may not be the best choice due to traffic and local driving habits. Public transport, such as trains and buses, is affordable and reliable, making it a convenient option for most travelers.
Booking Couchsurfing or Cheap Hotels
For budget-conscious travelers, options like Couchsurfing and cheap hotels can be ideal. Websites and apps like Couchsurfing, Booking.com, and Agoda offer a wide range of budget-friendly accommodations. Additionally, consider staying in hostels or guesthouses for a more immersive experience.
Renting a Vehicle as a Tourist
If you wish to explore remote areas or enjoy a road trip, you can rent a vehicle in Thailand. International driving licenses are generally accepted, but ensure yours is up-to-date. Local rental companies provide cars, scooters, and motorcycles, but be cautious and familiarize yourself with local traffic rules.
Best Places for Trekking and Solo Camping
For adventure enthusiasts, Northern Thailand is a trekker's paradise. Head to Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai to embark on guided treks into lush jungles and mountains. Additionally, Khao Sok National Park in the south offers stunning landscapes and the opportunity for solo camping amidst pristine nature.
Applying for an International Driving License in Thailand
To apply for an International Driving License Thailand (IDP) in Thailand, visit the Department of Land Transport. You'll need your original driver's license, passport-sized photos, and a completed application form. The International Driving Permit Thailand IDP allows you to drive legally in Thailand and is essential if you plan to rent a vehicle during your stay.
Thailand offers an abundance of experiences for travelers of all interests. By preparing thoroughly, understanding visa requirements, choosing the right transportation, and exploring beyond the well-trodden path, you'll be ready to immerse yourself in the magic of the Land of Smiles. So, pack your bags and get ready to create unforgettable memories in Thailand!

Bali Travel Guide for First-Timers
Tumblr media
Bali has always been on the top list of every traveler nowadays. You cannot blame everyone as this place is indeed radiating with rich culture, delectable cuisine, and don’t forget those instagrammable spots you keep on seeing on your feed. It was my first time on this country and to be honest, I unexpectedly got mesmerized with its beauty right off the bat!
Tumblr media
I actually once belonged to that very small percentage of people who really doesn’t have that much hype for this Indonesian gem. Unfortunate stories of scams always hindered my plan; And to my opinion, I have seen way more beautiful beaches than this place has to offer. I already took the chance when I scored a cheap promo fare and was accompanied by a friend so I know that the perfect time has come for me to personally witness what this tropical island has to offer.

How To Get To Bali?
Tumblr media
The famous Bali Swing
Bali being the main tourist destination of Indonesia has its own international airport strategically located in the provincial capital, Denpasar. Flying in and out of Bali is not an issue since its Ngurah Rai International Airport serves numerous domestic and international flight routes from and to most known destinations.
Philippines’ Cebu Pacific and Air Asia offer cheap direct flights from Manila. I got mine for Php2,186.04 RT via Cebu Pacific on one of their grand promo fares. Philippine Airlines also offer a more comfortable direct flight but with a steeper price.
Direct flights from major hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok also have direct flights to Bali. You can always check Skyscanner for the best flight options to your destination.
You can also reach Bali without flying if coming from some of the most famous destinations in Indonesia like Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya. On the other hand, a ferry ride from Lombok is also available.
How To Get Out Of The Airport (Ngurah Rai International Airport)?
Tumblr media
Mandatory airport photo opp ;)
Since airport taxis are notorious for their excessive pricing, the Grab app would be your best bet going to your accommodation or to whatever your next destination is coming from the airport. A motorcycle-ride hailing service app, Gojek is a more feasible option if you’re a solo traveler.
But if you’re on a group, I would advise to just book your airport transfer online (e.g. Klook) as it is more hassle-free and way cheaper than taxis. Klook is an online booking platform that offers cheaper prices for almost all your travel needs. From activities, admission tickets, transport, and even wifi and sim card, Klook is the way to go. If you’re new to Klook, make sure to sign up HERE to get a Php 150 reward!
  How To Tour Around Bali?
Tumblr media
If you have an international driver’s license and confident enough to drive around Bali, renting out a motorcycle or car would be the best option. Commuting in Bali is not recommendable.
For convenience, best option for tourists would be hiring a guide/driver to tour you around. Prices are reasonable enough specially if you’re on a group.
I actually had booked all our travel activities in Bali through the same person I had booked our airport transport with. He works together with his brothers/friends and they have detailed day-to-day itineraries for you to choose from. You can also customize it based on your preferences. Make sure to contact him for the updated rates.

  Where To Stay In Bali?
Tumblr media
Ubud – Even though it’s far-off from the airport, Ubud has been one of the most famous areas in Bali to book you accommodation with. We actually had our Airbnb in this area. Ubud offers more of a peaceful stay compared to other areas. It is also more culturally-rich as a lot of Buddhist temple-looking residences can be seen around. Fun fact: Most of the Bali locations for the movie Eat Pray Love were filmed here in Ubud.
Kuta/Seminyak – This area is where all the hustle and bustle are. If you’re into partying, this place is perfect for you. A lot of well-rated restaurants and shops are scattered around. A few decent beaches are also in reach from this area.
Jimbaran/Uluwatu – These areas south of Bali are also a perfect choice since most of the best beaches on the island (e.g. Dreamland Beach) can be found here. It is also just less than an hour away from the airport.
Check out the coolest accommodations in Bali through Airbnb! If you haven’t signed up yet, make sure to create an account HERE to get Php 2,200 off your first trip!!!
  Day 1: Ubud Tour
Tumblr media
We arrived in Bali in the morning and since it’s too early to check in yet to our Airbnb, we already started our tour that day. Yes! That is possible! So that is airport transport + tour in one! We definitely saved a lot on this day! I opted to have this day to tour around in Ubud since our accommodation is already in this area.
Tumblr media
Coffee Plantation (Lumbung Sari House of Coffee)
You get to try 14 different flavors of coffee and tea for free! Coconut Coffee was my favorite.
You can also try the famous Kopi Luwak (also known as cat poop coffee) for a fee.

  Ubud Palace

Ubud Market
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
  Bali Swing
Take note that there are several Bali Swings in Bali. Our guide gave us recommendations what to take. There is one that has a lunch buffet included. There is also one that is the cheapest yet doesn’t have much of a view. The other one is on mid-range pricing yet one of the most famous Bali Swings and this is what we took.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
  Pura Tirta Empul
I’ve been eager to go here and experience the custom since I have seen the cool pictures online. Unfortunately, it was a holiday and the place was jam-packed. But it didn’t stop me in experiencing what I have been looking forward in doing. I still dipped in the cold water of the temple and lined up with a lot of tourists.
Day 2: Nusa Penida Day Tour
Tumblr media
Definitely the highlight of our Bali trip is this not-so-far island from Bali, Nusa Penida. For less than an hour, you can get to this majestic island via ferry boat from Sanur Beach Harbour in Bali.

  Day 3: Bedugul Tour

  Handara Gate
Admission Fee - IDR 30k (PHP109)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
  Wanagiri Hidden Hills
Admission Fee – IDR 100k (PHP355)
I actually found the admission fee quite expensive for a small park/viewpoint like this. Nevertheless, the view was amazing and we had fun taking photos around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
  Taman Ayun Temple
Admisssion Fee – IDR 30k (PHP109)
Tanah Lot Temple is also included on this tour but we skipped it and just opted to go back to Ubud Market for more souvenir shopping. 😉
  Day 4: Seminyak/Uluwatu Tour
Tumblr media
Our last full day is a customized tour combining both the Seminyak and Uluwatu area. I just handpicked some of the most interesting spots on these areas to maximize our time. The spots for this day were definitely far off from our accommodation in Ubud so we exceeded our time allotment. Take note that most tours here impose reasonable fees for additional hours. I also had here the most tremendous traffic jam I have experienced yet in traveling. LOL. It took us 3 hours to get back to our accommodation in Ubud from Uluwatu Temple.
Tumblr media
  Seminyak Beach
It was on the plan to search for La Plancha Beach Bar and Restaurant for the colorful bean bags and umbrellas but it was a fail. ☹ We were probably dropped off on a wrong spot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
  Motel Mexicola
I actually want to try this famous restaurant bar during the night time to experience the party scene but it’s just far-off from our accommodation. I just decided to include this on today’s tour for a quick lunch. The interiors were so colorful and undeniably worthy of a shot for your IG feed.
Tumblr media
  Mad Pops
Right after a filling lunch is dessert of course! We went to Mad Pops for a quick visit for their ice cream and also for a shot with this famous wall art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
  oneeighty° at The Edge
Together with Nusa Penida, the experience in oneeighty° at The Edge is the highlight of my Bali trip. I kept on seeing amazing photos of their amazing glass-bottom sky pool over the cliff edge, overlooking a breathtaking 180° panorama view of the ocean.
Due to high demand & limited seating, reservations are recommended. Make sure to book your reservation online HERE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
  Uluwatu Temple
Don’t forget to watch the Uluwatu Kecak & Fire Dance on the late afternoon. I greatly enjoyed the show having the sunset as the background. It was definitely a surreal view.
Tumblr media
Bali left me in awe. I didn’t expect my experience to be one of the best. I already had this place listed as one of my favorite destinations. It might not be the cheapest but Indonesia in general is cheap to travel. The place is also diverse with countless breathtaking natural and incredible man-made attractions. Good thing, I didn’t focus more on those unfortunate stories that I read. With proper research, open mind, and passion to travel, no doubt that your trip to this wonderful island could be your greatest to date.

Lonely murder of Hell's Angels bikie beaten and buried in Thailand
Tumblr media
Hell's Angels bikie beaten and buried in #Thailand. WAYNE Schneider was a tough, high-ranking #Hell'sAngels bikie with a reputation in the Sydney underworld as an international drug kingpin.
But he had little chance when five men, four in black silk balaclavas, descended on his luxury villa in November, 2015 in the seaside Thai town of Pattaya. Within hours, Schneider would be dead and his body dumped in a forest grave. In late 2015, Schneider had been living for almost four years in Pattaya, a resort 140km outside of Bangkok that is known for sex tourism and fugitive crime gangs. Drugs The 38-year-old had fled Australia in February 2012, after police busted two clandestine methamphetamine labs in the south-west Sydney suburbs of Narellan and Catherine Fields. In Thailand, he caught up with another Australian, kickboxer Antonio Bagnato, (a Bangkok Jack Report) who had also absconded from the law. Bagnato left Australia two days after the 2014 ambush, stabbing and shooting murder of Sydney father-of-two, Bradley Dillon.

Wayne Schneider’s inquest returns to court this week.Source:News Limited In Pattaya, Bagnato, also a former bikie gang member and a Muay Thai fighter, became a neighbour of Schneider’s and the men — who had shared business interests — often drank together. Bagnato regularly talked about the secretive Sydney organisation known as Saint Michael Fight Club in the city’s inner-west, and had been trying to recruit new members for the group in Thailand. Debts He had moved to Thailand after the August 11, 2014 murder of Mr Dillon, 25, who was killed over a debt owed to him by a member of Saint Michael Fight Club. Bagnato’s cousin, Diego Carbone, has since been convicted of his murder. Schneider and Bagnato had been partners in a gym in Sydney, and reportedly involved in drug deals in Thailand. But on November 29, 2015, it was Bagnato who came calling with his masked associates. They beat him and forced him into a Toyota Hilux utility and took him to a rented house. There they tied Schneider to a metal commode wheelchair and beat him until he passed out. At some point, Schneider’s assailants are believed to have left the house for several hours. When they returned, the Hells Angels bikie may have already been dead.

Australian man Antonio Bagnato has been found guilty and sentenced to death by a Thai court for his role in the 2015 abduction and murder of Wayne Schneider.Source:AAP Before dawn the next day, they bundled him into the ute and took him 30km south to a woodland grove, where they dug a 1.8m grave. One day later, using data from the rented ute’s GPS signal, Thai police went to a forest grove near a Chinese temple and found the grave in bushes. It was in a grassy area that had been disturbed by a vehicle and the officers followed it to a plot of freshly turned earth. Grave They started digging and a metre below ground found the body of Wayne Schneider; his neck had been broken and his left eye fractured. Police noticed there was a wound oozing blood from the side of his head. Police were led to a reservoir where Schneider’s clothes and other items were dumped after he was killed. Blood and bullet casings were found at his villa when police arrived.

Antonio Bagnato fled Australia in 2014 and is now on death row in Thailand.Source:AAP Witnesses told police the Toyota ute had been at the gravesite for several hours, and police tracked down the renter — Antonio Bagnato’s Thai wife Siraphat Saimart, 25. Thai Police issued a warrant for Bagnato, who had fled the country, driving in a private car to Cambodia. A 21-year-old American was detained on the Thai-Cambodian border and brought back to Pattaya for questioning Days later, police arrested Bagnato, then 26, in a raid on a cheap hotel in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh and he was extradited back to Thailand. Thai Court A Thai court subsequently found Bagnato guilty and sentenced him to death; he is on death row in the notorious Bang Kwang Central Prison, better known as the “Bangkok Hilton”. Last December, Thai police arrested four Hells Angels bikies who allegedly had links to Wayne Schneider. A Thai court heard that Bagnato had hired the four men to kidnap and kill Schneider in 2015. Court documents alleged Bagnato was attempting to open an overseas chapter of Saint Michael Fight Club when he murdered Schneider, reportedly over a drug dispute. The NSW Coroner heard that Schneider may have died alone in the rented house he was taken to, and left for a time by his assailants after they beat him.
Tumblr media
The abduction and murder of Wayne Schneider sparked a major investigation for police in Thailand and Australia.Source:Supplied Detective Sergeant Paul Roe from the NSW Police Gangs Squad told the inquest he travelled to Thailand to investigate the circumstances of Schneider’s death with local police. Police told him Schneider was most likely bashed to death, with Bagnato being the instigator. Co-ordinated “It looked like he co-ordinated and organised the whole thing, as far as we can see,” Detective Sergeant Roe said. He said Schneider was likely alive when he was taken to the rented home, because he had ligature marks on his leg consistent with being tied, and there was blood found in the same room as the metal wheelchair.

Thai police examine the shallow grave where the body of Hells Angels bikie Wayne Schneider was found at Chon Buri, Thailand in 2015.Source:Supplied “He was left for a period of time — I don’t know how long — in that room by himself,” Detective Sergeant Roe said. “Allegedly when they returned to that room, Schneider had passed away. My understanding was they stripped his body there, removed his clothes, and that’s when they took him to that roadside grave.” Acting state coroner Teresa O’Sullivan found Schneider died by homicide at the house where he was detained, from a blunt-force injury to his head. His body was returned to Sydney in December 2015, where it was cremated following a funeral. - News.com.au – You can follow BangkokJack on Instagram, Twitter & Reddit. Travel Experts Reveal 10 Ways To Save On Travel
We’re not mathematicians, but we’re pretty sure the following theorem holds true: There is an inverse relationship between how badly you need a vacation and how comfortably you can afford one. That is, the more you need a vacation, the less likely you are to be in the financial position to pull one together. That’s what it feels like in our experience, anyway. Call it the algebra of exhaustion.
Tumblr media
iStock But what if there’s a tricky workaround? What if you could take that sorely needed week away and come home to a livable bank account? We reached out to a handful of travel agents and vacation writers to see if the dream is achievable—and it turns out, it just may be. If I had had to pay for hotels, vacation rentals or even hostels in each of these expensive cities, I would never have been able to afford the trips. Here’s what we learned, all boiled down into 10 thrifty tips that’ll save you hard-earned cash on your next getaway:
1. Remember the Rule of Tuesdays.
Tuesday is an important day of the week in the world of air travel. If you can travel on a Tuesday or even Wednesday, you’ll probably get the cheapest flight of the week. Generally, people do their traveling on Thursday, Friday, or over the weekend. Demand drives prices up, so you’re more likely to find a cheap flight during off-peak times—usually a Tuesday or Wednesday.
Tumblr media
iStock At least, that’s what we’ve always heard. But is it really true? Yes, according to news outlet CNBC. While there’s no magic day to purchase the best deals, the cheapest days to travel are Tuesday, followed by Wednesday, and then Saturday. Airlines use algorithms to determine prices, and these are constantly being updated based off of sales and availability, says travel writer and vice president of travel company Pruvo, Doron Nadivi.
Tumblr media
iStock.com/scyther5 “There is also an old myth about ordering 57 days prior to travel. Both of these suggestions are not true,” Nadivi tells us. “Last year I booked a flight from Costa Rica to New Zealand…, returning from Bangkok to Costa Rica months prior to travel. I put an alarm to check 57 days before departure and the exact same flight number, same route, same website cost four times more.” Of course, there are always the many price tracking sites out there. Some sites even show long-term price estimates for flights, so you can plan your vacation around your budget.
Tumblr media
iStock Still, the real trick when purchasing a flight is to follow through when the price is good. If you see a great deal, get it, now. Chances are it’ll be gone in a few hours. The “book on Tuesday six weeks out” rule may be inaccurate, but there’s plenty of technology available to get you where you want to be for the best possible price. Use it.
2. Hit the shoulder season.
What’s the shoulder season, you ask? We explain—plus give you a few quick tips on how to avoid the tourists and get affordable flights—in the video below:
3. Be a little impulsive.
There are pros and cons to this tried-and-true technique for a quick escape from the day-to-day grind. But asking for a “cheap ticket to anywhere” doesn’t work like it used to.
Tumblr media
iStock Once upon a time, you could walk up to a ticket counter and get a cheap, last-second deal for an undersold flight. It was great if you didn’t much care where you were going. But those days are over. Today, most flights are overbooked, and last-minute flying can actually be more expensive, not less. Still, the days of the 11th-hour deal aren’t over entirely. It’s just that you have to use technology to take advantage now. Try signing up for your favorite airline’s email list. That way you’ll see any last-minute specials, and you can easily build a trip around what’s cheap. You can also check out coupon sites like Groupon, or LivingSocial for luxurious, planned getaways for a fraction of the normal price.
Tumblr media
iStock To improve your odds of scoring a deal, try to visit less popular cities. For instance, Aspen, Colorado is a beautiful ski town, but it’s also busy and expensive. Why not hit the slopes in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, or Brian Head, Utah, instead? You can beat the crowds, save some cash, and discover new places with this tactic.
4. Ditch the hotel.
Hotels are great, but with a new generation of travelers hotels have taken a hit. Just like Uber and Lyft are changing the world of ground transportation, Airbnb and VRBO are laying siege on the hotel industry.
Tumblr media
iStock Through these and similar services, you can find great deals on short-term house rentals instead of booking a bunch of hotel rooms for larger travel parties. There are also smaller sites in most every major city that will have a listing of units that are available for travelers to rent. Do your research and you’ll find the options are practically endless—and very affordable. You can also use home-sharing apps and basically stay in a new city for free “in exchange for caring for someone else’s home and pets,” says author and world-traveler Kelly Hayes-Raitt, who traveled the world for four years straight while reporting her book, Living Large in Limbo, and racked up quite a few tricks during the process. “I get unpaid accommodations, a kitchen to make my own meals and other homey perks like free cable and DVDs, use of a car, and no nickel-and-dime fees hotels tack on.”
Tumblr media
Nishant Choksi for The New Yorker There are sites to set up accommodations for travelers to house-sit, or to actually swap homes for a period of time. This is a great way to get to know a new city without spending a ton of money. “During the past eight years, I’ve house-sat in London for two months during the Olympics, Berlin, Amsterdam, Hanoi, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Osaka,” Hayes-Raitt tells us. “If I had had to pay for hotels, vacation rentals or even hostels in each of these expensive cities, I would never have been able to afford the trips.”
5. Get off the plane.
If you have some wiggle room for your travel plans, let the gate attendant know. That way you can be put on the short list if they need volunteers. If you’re flying on United or Delta, you can bid on how much money it’d take for you to give up your seat. After the David Dao debacle of 2017, United Airlines has raised the cap on how much they’re willing to pay for passenger seats on overbooked flights to $10,000. That would make for some vacation.
Tumblr media
iStock In the moment, there’s often the panic-induced sense that all you want to do is reach your destination, but if you psych yourself up to sit around the airport for a couple of hours to make some serious miles or money, then you’ll be good to go. With everything going on after the United incident, you should know that airlines do have the right to remove any passenger (except for people with disabilities and unaccompanied minors).
6. Brown bag it.
We know a granola bar isn’t the same as that breakfast burrito you could buy at the airport, but it could save you a good chunk of change. Airport food tends to be more expensive than the already-pricey food at professional sporting events and theme parks, so if you have some time to spare, make yourself a meal and bring it. Some food is okay to pass through security, and if you have kids, you can always bring powdered milk and make them a drink in the airport instead of hitting up the terminal’s Starbucks. If you don’t have time to make something yourself, you can still pass over the expensive airport-specific restaurants.
Tumblr media
iStock One of our favorite options is going to Subway and getting a footlong sandwich, then eating half at the airport and half on the flight. You can save yourself some good money this way. (Just don’t get the tuna; your fellow passengers won’t thank you for that.)
Tumblr media
http://istock.com/amriphoto After you arrive at your vacation spot, take advantage of any local grocery stores and cook for yourself. Purchasing food, even pre-made meals, at a grocery store instead of eating out all the time will save you a fortune while you’re traveling.
7. Hydrate on the cheap.
Everyone knows you can’t bring liquids through security, including water. But you can bring an empty water bottle and fill it at a water fountain or fill station.
Tumblr media
iStock It’s crucial to drink up on the plane; people tend to get really dehydrated when they travel because of the recycled air, the altitude, and the fact you don’t really drink a lot of liquids while you’re in flight (no one likes asking people to get up so they can use the restroom). This will keep you hydrated and save you from buying a $4 bottle of water.
8. Find new ways to get around.
Asking a friend to pick you up from the airport is almost as bad as asking them to help you move. Nobody wants to do it, but most people don’t feel like they can say no. However, in most major cities, there is public transportation that can take you to and from the airport.
Tumblr media
iStock If you don’t have easy access to public transportation, you can try to take an Uber or Lyft, which will often save you some money compared with a taxi, which may overcharge via a large airport tax. Be aware, though, that in some cities, Uber and Lyft cannot pick up passengers from the airport.
Tumblr media
iStock Do some research on your destination’s transportation before you go. Both the Google Maps app and the Citymapper app can provide you with information and schedules for trains, busses, and more. Where possible, take the monorail, subway, or bus instead of a taxi. Alternatively, you can always take the opportunity to explore the city on foot and walk to your final destination.
9. Take a cue from extreme couponers.
There are coupons for literally everything. If you know you’re going to be in a new city, take advantage of the ones that are for first-time customers only. Apps like Groupon and LivingSocial have deals for activities and food that could cut your costs in half.
Tumblr media
iStock Another way to go about saving money on food is searching hashtags on Instagram for specific locations. If you find food pics that look appetizing, get in touch with the restaurant and see if they have any special deals or happy hours.
10. Book directly.
Airlines often offer more flexibility and cheaper fees than third-party sellers. A lot of websites will scour the internet for the best deals—which is great if you’re short on time or organizational skills—but then you usually get stuck with few options and little flexibility, since you’re booking through a third party.
Tumblr media
iStock The best thing to do is use a search site like Skyscanner or Google Flights to find the cheapest flight, then head over to that airline’s website and book directly through them. When you book direct, you’ll get cheaper flights, and usually more flexibility and options for your trip.
Tumblr media
iStock.com/YakobchukOlena These tips won’t just save you money on vacation. They might bring down the cost of a trip just enough that you can safely afford it in the first place. Follow our experts’ advice, and you could balance the equation that allows for a truly restorative—and much-deserved—adventure. Read the full article

Thailand Traveler’s Guide
How To Get From Chiang Mai To Chiang Rai
What is the best way to get from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai? For travelers on tour in northern Thailand, this is a question I hear a lot. Fortunately, there are different ways to make this trip that I would like to browse below.
Tumblr media
By far, the easiest way to get from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai is by bus or rental car. It is possible to fly indirectly, but it is a waste of time and money because there are no nonstop flights between the two cities.
There is also no train connecting the two cities. Even the Sino-Thai high-speed train that started construction in December 2017 will not connect the two cities - it will go directly to Bangkok.
Tumblr media
So, with this short one-on-one response, let's explore weeds with our three available options: the bus (recommended), a car or an airplane.
Bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai
The most common way to travel between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai is to take a bus. And the most convenient bus is the Green Bus, which leaves from the Arcade Bus Station northwest of Chiang Mai.
Tumblr media
It is located at the end of the Kaeo Narawat road, not far from the Central Festival, near where the road joins the highway. To get to the Arcade Bus Station, simply hop on a songthaew, which should cost about 50 baht per person from downtown Chiang Mai.
When you enter the Arcade Bus Station, turn left and you will see the Green Bus ticket office. You need to get a ticket from the machine on the right side of the ticket counter and wait for your number to be called. Of course, if you want to plan ahead, you can always buy Chiang Mai bus tickets online (which I highly recommend).
Choosing the Right Bus
Traveling in Thailand can be dangerous, and I have seen many reports of road accidents involving buses in recent years, resulting in many deaths and many serious injuries. For this reason, I tend to prefer what is known as the "VIP bus". The Chiang Mai VIP Bus in Chiang Rai costs 288 baht ($ 9.60), a unique trip. There is no train between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
The trip to Chiang Rai takes three hours, with most of the journey through beautiful mountain regions. There is plenty of legroom and the seats are very comfortable. There is also a clean toilet at the back of the bus. At the beginning of the trip, we were given a bottle of water and a small snack.
There are two bus stations in Chiang Rai - a new station on the outskirts of the city and a former railway station in the city center, near the night bazaar. If you go to town, stay on until the second stop.
Overall, a very simple and direct trip.
From Chiang Rai Bus Station, guests must go to your hotel to catch a songthaew or tuk-tuk. You should find some around the station. We tried to get a songthaew, but the driver did not know where the hotel was, even though we gave him the address. So we got a tuk-tuk instead, which costs 50 baht.
Private Car – Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai
The other best option outside a bus is to take a private car from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. Although this is certainly the fastest mode of transportation available (about 3.5 hours), it is 10 times more expensive than taking a bus.
There are two types of private cars to consider in Thailand:
Car and driver: It is intimidating to think of driving across the road or to determine the direction to travel to another country. That is why it is sometimes easier to rent a car and a driver to travel from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. Renting a vehicle for 3 people usually costs around $ 120. You can also call on a driver, male or female.
Rent a car and drive yourself: I had already rented a car in Thailand and really enjoyed the experience! It's an adventure, but I realize it's not something everyone would want to do. For rates and availability, I recommend you consult Budget or Avis, which both operate outside Thailand.
Although the private car can be a simple charter vehicle, you can get an even more comfortable vehicle if you book through a travel agency.
Whichever method you choose, you can be taken almost anywhere to Chiang Mai and be dropped almost anywhere in Chiang Rai. Once again, very practical.
Flights from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai
Finally, I will mention the flights from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai simply because it is technically possible. I do not recommend it, but it is possible.
The reason I do not recommend flying is because to fly from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, you will have to go out of your way to Bangkok, then back to Chiang Rai. The total flight time is approximately 5 hours, not counting the time required to pass the airport security and return to the city.
What's crazy is that thanks to cheap airlines, you can probably get cheaper airfares than a private car. You will not be able to register any luggage, but at least you will arrive at your destination.
Oh, and it's possible to rent a direct flight from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, but unless you have a lot of extra money or you're traveling with a larger group to share the costs, it would not be the same. the most economical solution for you. most travelers.
Conclusion
As you can see, there are three main ways to get from Chiang Mai to Chiang Mai in Thailand: the bus, a private car or the plane.
Of the three, the bus is by far the best combination of fast and cheap. You can check timetables and book tickets online for the green bus, but make sure to take the 'VIP bus' for a more comfortable experience.
Getting a private car is the second option that will save you a few hours of your trip. Although I like driving myself - and renting a car in Thailand is surprisingly easy - I realize it's not for everyone. For this reason, you can inquire about the costs of chartering a vehicle and driver from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai.
Finally, if it is possible to fly between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the stopover in Bangkok makes it an unimpressive option.
Whatever you choose, stay safe and be sure to book a good hotel in Chiang Rai so you do not have to worry about where you will sleep when you arrive! We stayed at the B2 Hotel, about five minutes walk from the city center.

It is possible to retire on a small to average Social Security benefit only in S.E.Asia.What is small to average?Think in the area of 1000/1500,this would do the job nicely for most people.I can point out the numbers(money),that make this possible.First, the average working non-university employed Thai makes about 8.60 usd $ per day.I am talking about 65 to 75 % of the general population of Thailand. That figure is for a 10 to 12 hour day,6 days a week x 52=2703.00 US Dollars a "YEAR".A Thai university graduate earns anywhere between 355 to 600.00 per month,so if you average that out to 475.00=5700.00 per year.A good figure to use when thinking about the true costs of living in Thailand is to base it on the university level grade pay, which averages around 12,000thb to 15,000thb per month, half of what you our bringing to the table,so too speak!OK,we "Farangs do get the "Treatment",that would be the ever present "Double pricing" scam that persists in this wonderful country.I spent a lot more than needed to be spent my first three years living here.I am now fully informed on most of the "Scams" & Thai Family Money issues...They our many and crop up everyday.Do not buy what you can rent!I wish i had taken that advice, when first offered me by others who had spent many years in Thailand.Rent is way cheaper than buying in Thailand.I will also point out that no matter what you read, you can "NOT" own "LAND" in Thailand. If you buy a house, then it must be given to your wife(not G/F)..no strings attached in the deal.It is much easier to rent long term or short. In my area you can get a 1 bedroom apartment furnished with "A/C" for under 7,000thb(210.00) per month. You can rent a house in Saimai area of Bangkok for close to that price also, but you will pay extra for the water, electric,Internet etc.Taxis our the way to go,along with public transportation.I bought a new car,big mistake on my part.Take the bus,BTS sky train, taxi,or motorcycle taxi..Cheap!Eat where the "REGULAR" Thai eats.Food can cost less than 3,000thb a month. It is safe, cheap and fun to eat where the regular Thai eats.A simple meal costs less than 60thb in most places(two bucks!)I have Internet for 12 bucks a month.Cable with 100 stations(SANOOK CABLE) 35 bucks for the year.Water & electric run about 120.00 a month for a big house if you use "A/C"...Fans our cheaper! If you need medical, then just go where the "REGULAR THAIS GO",not to the "BIG PRIVATE HOSPITALS".I use "Bcare Hospital" in Saimai,it is owned and run by the Thai Air force(or at least most of the staff our Air force)it is good, cheap and they do take good care of you.I average less than 50.00 bucks a pop for the Doctor,Nurse,Medication.Dental work is at its cheapest if you access it from a hospital. Most if not all of your medical needs can be accessed in a one-stop & shop medical facility. If you decide to move & retire here before getting married(both male & female),please do yourself a favor and get a "GOOD" Thai friend,as they can and will get you the best deals, keep you from getting into a big mess, and help you understand that "Thailand",is not Kansas Alice!Thais do not "TIP",so throw that habit out the window, you will save at least 100 bucks a month.Very few regular Thai go to buy needed things to wear from the big malls.Follow the regular Thai, forget about the quality(things our cheaply made) and stop thinking like a "American".I can play golf cheap here also, just go where the "Regular Thai Plays",not the five-star resorts.I can tell you to go to the Air force & Army golf courses, they our the cheapest in Thailand, and also they our all over this country. The greens our not great, nor our the tee areas, but the cost is 50 to 100% less than the tourist resorts.I would also recommend that you get a Thai drivers license,as it lets you visit National parks for the same price as Thai nationals(most of the time)It is also smart to learn all about "ATM's" and Thai Banking,as this is a third world country and things our different.I spent at least 60 grand doing stupid "Farang" things in my first two years.I hope that this little advice, saves you from doing the same.My last bit of advice, please protect yourself & money at all times,Thais think you our "RICH",and will always let you pay.luckkyybuddha999
