Weird question but what sort of smells/ perfumes to you think the tulpar crew uses? It’s really bizarre I’m aware but it’s popped into my brain and now I can’t stop thinking about it.
Also I’ve been lurking on your blog for a while (late October I’m an og 💪) and I’m behind a few asks 😇. Wondering if you do emoji anons? If so can I be your 🐁 anon?
yes ofc you can be 🐁 anon!!<33
Curly— vibrant, fresh, clean.
Curly would smell like a warm hug, I know that doesn't make any sense but he would probably smell like sweat from always working with hints of herbal skincare from whatever soaps and shampoos he might use while showering, with a hint of citrusy notes because he just gives off those vibes, he would also smell like fresh laundry because his uniform of always tidy and neat.
if we stick to the idea of him being a well paid man then I'd assume he's into those classy and exxy💸 perfumes like dior sauvage, and Jean Paul Gaultier. Something which isn't overpowering yet subtle and pleasantly noticeable.
Jimmy— harsh, cheap, unrefined.
Now let's be true to ourselves,i could've damn well just said he dowses a can of axe spray to make up for his lack of showers. But we know that he does in fact enjoy showering and taking care of his hygiene, but the guy who says that 'hobbies are for people with money' i don't think he'd care too much about what he smells like, nor would he be spending money unnecessarily on expensive perfumes.
Jimmy smells of sweat, cigarettes with a hint of whatever cheap perfume he uses, with slight notes of a sour undertone, he's the kinda guy to keep 13-1 shampoos on the deck, so his hair would probably smell like that. He doesn't smell like shit, just very generic. If we talk about fragrances, then if curly offers to buy him stuff, he'd probably go for JPG—Le Male, which has a very overpowering scent, since he wouldn't probably be very good at buying perfumes and would just ask curly what he uses and pick one.
Anya— feminine, floral, gentle.
Anya would smell very clean, her hair would smell of the floral shampoo which she uses, she'll probably have sandalwood tones to her, misty, woody, light scents which don't draw too much attention but are subtle and gentle. Since she enjoys fast food, on a casual day she might smell like burgers and fries, but that's what it means to be human.
I don't think she'd be too keen on spending too much money on scents, but I do believe she picks out the ones which actually smell good. Think floral, fruity, vanilla. Peach or pear, those kind of undertones. I'd say she uses that one Versace perfume she bought 7 years ago in a yolo moment which she uses preciously, or affordable floral perfumes which are actually very pleasant and subtle and not brash.
Swansea— Earthy, Woody, Refined.
Aside from being a sneakerhead, I'll assume Swansea likes taking care of his hygiene as well, which would include what he smells like. On his own Swansea would smell like sweat, but with mechanical undertones like engine oil or metal. He's have sour and warm notes as well, he buys branded belts and would smell like leather.
He'd probably have his wife choose his perfumes for him for what she thinks suits him the best, probably like Tom Ford, or Chanel Coromandel.
Daisuke— Fresh, Playful, Tropical.
Daisuke is a youngster and he knows where the heats at, he most likely keeps up with trends and what's the latest move, but he obviously wouldn't smell like the freaking Italian mafia or a rich grandpa from the suburbs.
On his own Daisuke smells citrusy, hints of coconut and fresh mints. ( He secretly smokes and chews bubblegum to cover up the smell ) he'd smell like fresh soap and shampoo because he'd definitely be up in the taking care of his looks and hygiene game to impress the ladies.
He doesn't have problems buying expensive perfumes like Tom ford, sauvage, Versace, but tropical events would suit him the most like Creed Royal, Hermes or Tommy Bahama

You can choose whichever Antiques you'd like for this one!
Taking them to a store (Walmart style or a department store with a bit of everything), giving them a hundred dollars, and telling them that they can buy whatever they like within that price limit.
Who takes advantage of it and what do they buy?
Enfield — He happily buys food, medical supplies, and other necessities. Although he can't see it as anything other than a normal supply errand, he's at least content to find useful things to buy for both of you. And to try to show how competent and helpful he is.
Snider — He'll buy anything that he thinks can be used as a weapon, and is openly irritated about the lack of actual military supplies in the department store. He's also trying to make a "point" about why the whole idea is stupid, so his choices are intended to piss you off.
George — His purchases are mostly food (will you cook burgers for him???), and he doesn't have the slightest second thought about spending the full amount. However, there's at least one surprisingly sweet gift for you mixed in with the junk food and impulse buys.
Kentucky — He mostly gets various craft and DIY supplies, fully intending to make gifts for you later. There might be an accessory for himself included too, though— one that he asks your opinion about before buying it, just to make sure Master likes his style.
Pennsylvania — He feels kind of bad about spending your money (he really doesn't need to be spoiled...), so he tries to buy things that will be useful to both of you. It's mostly practical items and things he knows you like, and he spends far under the full amount given.
Charleville — He's both deeply insecure about being too "high-maintenance" and unsure of what he should want, in the first place, so his purchases end up being little more than a piece of flattering clothing and some sweet wine. He gives most of the money back.
Chassepot — The main thing he gets is a showy, "romantic" gift for you, but if you pay close attention, you'll notice him smuggling a couple of bags full of cheap alcohol (an emergency emotional control measure) past you when he thinks you aren't looking.
Tabatiere — All he gets are cigarettes and some nice things to cook with, like new utensils or food he knows you like. He's deeply uncomfortable with the amount of money you gave him, so he's trying to make sure you get something out of this too.
Dreyse — A mixture of whatever practical supplies he needs (such as non-perishable food or exercise equipment) and Herme management tools, such as a belt that takes some coordination to remove. He'll also give you a good portion of the money back, in the end.
Jitte — His main purchase is nice sake for the two of you to share! Depending on what's available, he might also get Japanese candy, a little potted plant, or an interesting novel, but he's thanking you profusely for being so nice to him, regardless. Master is so kind!
Karl — He gets a fair amount of nice chocolate, and that's it. The rest of the money goes back to you. It's partially a dignity thing and partially just that he doesn't want to look needy, but he can't make himself spend very much. A small treat is plenty, really.
Lorenz — There's not much in a department store that interests him, so his selection ends up being an eclectic selection of objects that he intends to experiment with somehow. He'd also get a book or two if there's anything available that seems worth his intellect.
Cutlery — He spends the full amount, and it's all food. Specifically, non-perishable food that he can hide in his room and hold onto for the next few months. He tries not to let you see exactly what he's getting, and is concerningly protective over the bags when you leave.

2. Outdoor Girl
Written for @sephweek prompt #1: Outdoor Girl.
Pairing: Hades/Persephone, Hermes & Persephone friendship in the background here
Summary: Persephone’s there but not quite all there, and Hades tries to pick up the pieces.
Here she is, his girl; he stares at her as Hermes holds her up, an apologetic smile on his face.
“Hermes,” he growls, not bothering with niceties. His niceties for the day have been reserved for his wife, who is currently resting her head on Hermes’ shoulder, barely awake. “Why…?”
“A bit too much fun at the party tonight,” Hermes says, tone even more apologetic than his look. The rabbit knows that he’s a dog looking for something to chase, and he’d really rather Hades chase his near-comatose wife than follow the sprinting messenger. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know who else to call—”
Hades ignores his apologies; he presses closer to his wife, who turns a little eye toward him. She giggles again into Hermes’ shoulder. Hermes has made the right move; Demeter would not approve of her daughter’s ways. Persephone stares at him, a pair of fox-brown eyes peeking up at him in curiosity. “’s that time already?”
“Yes,” he says, firmly. Technically, he is early by a couple weeks. Technically, this should have merely been a visit.
But how could he leave her here, like this?
“Mmm, okay,” she says, strangely pliant. Hermes sort of shrugs his wife toward him and he steps forward as she snuggles up into his arms instead. He holds her close, wraps her up in her big coat. Some things are instinctual: Holding his wife and keeping her safe is one of them.
“I missed you, lover,” she murmurs into his coat, and he suspects such is true, but he cannot dwell upon the pleasantness of it because she is rubbing her leg against his own, and he knows such is not an action borne of his irrepressible manliness but of some drug coursing through her system: a needle, a pill, a drink. A cheap trick.
It has nothing to do with him or her feelings for him.
Her hand fiddles with his belt and he gently grabs her hand, stops her from putting on a public display.
He wonders, uncharitably, if perhaps she would touch another like this, though he knows it is unfair to her. She has never been untrue. But the truth is, also, that he does not much recognize the woman who is kissing his neck at the moment and shivering as if he is rendering her to the god’s almighty chorus.
He has only his hand at the small of her back, and though he thinks his skill as a lover is decent, he knows it is not enough to provoke this kind of reaction. That the reaction is from the drug that she has chosen, gods above alone knowing what it is.
“C’mon, daddy,” she says, normally a whisper that would excite and titillate his senses but feels all wrong here with Hermes staring at them at a train station. “C’mon, let’s have some fun.” The hand reappears at his belt, manages to slip it half off before he gently corrects her and holds her hand.
Hermes looks at him with a very pained expression. “I’ll take her,” he says. Hermes does not move, watching Persephone as she shivers against him, the touch of a hand at her back and a hand covering her own evidently enough to make her near convulse.
“Ooh,” she shivers against him. “Oooh, it’s cold. It’s so cold, daddy.”
He really wishes she would stop calling him that in public. Still, she is shivering mightily. He does believe she is cold.
He shrugs off his jacket, puts it over her shoulders instead. He should ask where her fur coat’s gotten, but his outdoor girl appears to have lost it along the way.
Hermes is still staring at them. Persephone’s doing a bit better with the coat on; still shivering under his arm, but she’s tracing small circles into his back now. She moans like he’s got a hand on her cunt while she’s doing it and Hermes looks like he’d really rather not be here and honestly the feeling is mutual.
“Go,” he says to Hermes. Hermes opens his mouth like he wants to argue, but Hades rolls his eyes and pushes the boy away. “Go.”
And for once, he does.
“Baby,” she murmurs; now that they are alone on the platform, she is more affectionate. She reaches up on the tips of her tippy-toes and pecks his lips, moaning like crazy. “Baby let’s go in the trees, put me up against one, let’s become the roots, the forest…” She is babbling, shivering in his arms, and he worries she is in the grips of a god outside his control, or perhaps something even more profound.
She cups his groin as if she owns him, her fingers moving in a familiar pattern he would enjoy more in any other circumstance. “Daddy, please…Please, daddy, show your outdoor girl a good time. Please?” She gets up on unsteady and shaky legs to kiss him again and he does lean into it a bit more than he should; she is an attractive creature, regardless of her current troubles.
But then he remembers that this is not her fully awake, and he pulls back, tucks her back into his arms to keep her safe.
If only from herself.
“I want you,” she mewls, and it takes everything within his power to take a deep breath and try to focus. She is not herself. She is not here, not really. This is but a mirage.
“Later,” he says. “Let’s get you home. Sober you up.”
And she whines as he pulls her away from her mother’s lands – from the fruit of the vine and the roots of the cellar, both bursting forth from her. He hears the inching of the vines, the explosion of leaves as he pushes her toward the train. He does not doubt that a frost will come tomorrow. Hopefully, this last burst of fecund fertility is enough to get the mortals through their winter. “Let’s get you home. Keep you safe,” he says, and he tells himself he is doing such as his husbandly duties.
But still, he catches her as she looks longingly towards the forests just past his little station, and he wonders, just for one moment, if maybe she regrets the path they’ve traveled.

famed idol life / career meme
notes: i started doing responses one by one, but then i thought it’d be better to do one big mass-post instead of flooding dash all at once. thank you to all that sent in! appreciate u all :~) (if anyone has any numbers they need, please feel free to like this or just let me know, even if i already sent in an ask!)
2. what are your favorite b-sides/non-title tracks you’ve released?
“i like diana. there’s something moody, sultry about it with a touch of elegance. it’s almost like cheap wine on a long friday — contrasting, but it somehow fits. plus, sooah helped out on that track which becomes the cherry icing on top. perhaps, there’s something better coming out on my next album, where there’s too many b-sides that i’d cherry pick myself to be my favorite. for that, look out at the sea, captain.”
3. what is your least favorite song (title track or b-side) you’ve released?
“i don’t think there’s a least favorite. if there were, then i wouldn’t have partook in any of it — my personality’s in it or out of it. there’s no in between, especially where my voice plays a part. i don’t want to touch things where my heart doesn’t lie, that’d just be cruel. wouldn’t it? if it doesn’t relieve my soul a bit, then i don’t think i’d dip my toes in those waters.”
6. what is one thing (a concept, a genre, an outfit, etc.) you would least like your company make you do?
“i’d like to do house funk, maybe house-pop. you’ve seen elements in it in knight’s old releases, and even the oldies like decipher’s done it. unity’s dabbled in it somewhat in their b-sides, and considering fuse has amassed a long bridge of different concepts — the spectrum’s large. i’d like to wear hawaiian t-shirts and prance around to some summer house-funk, and that’s something i think the general public can all dance around in their rooms to.”
8. if you could be in any idol group, which one would you choose?
“i’ve grown accustomed to fuse — i like being in fuse. i don’t think i’d fit anywhere else, though i would say bee would be a nice change for the summer fun. i’d even enjoy myself to be in unity had i been a boy. can you imagine? the fun that would come out of belting welcome to my playground, and singing the tunes to touch. that’d be a girl’s dream come true.”
9. if you could say one thing to your ceo, what would it be?
“you’re the prettiest person i’ve ever seen. in the whole country, out of all the women in the world — you’re the standard of beauty. but i’m sure the whole world knows that by now, don’t they? i thank you for giving fuse some of the best songs, and though i’ve never met you face by face, i’d like to believe you’re better than what’s shown from face value. but, still — my wannabe face is you but no amount of plastic surgery would turn me into you, would it?”
10. if you were auditioning for your company today, what would you perform for your audition, or what would you change from your original audition?
“i don’t think i’d repeat the dance, nor attempt to dance to something like seo taeji and boys. if i recall, i did h.o.t’s we are the future, and snsd’s kissing you with a ruler i had in my back pocket. in retrospect, that was my standard of dancing — if only i’d known it’d become a bad memory to highlight the work i have left. maybe, i’d only stick to kissing you, ruler version while singing something more melodically acceptable than finkl’s now.”
11. if you could do any special stage, what would it be and who would it be with?
“i don’t know — i don’t know many things when it comes to these mix and match scenarios. i know i’d like to make a stage where i can dance freely as if i’m in the comfort of my own home. perhaps to a song like gee, or even oh — even willing to dabble in lipstick’s genie if it means dressing up like a sailor and going ahoy. i’d want to do the stage with jeonghwa, sooah, and well — i don’t have that many friends to give you a special stage, oops.”
13. if you could become a model or ambassador for any brand, what would you choose?
”again, i’ve been blessed and satiated with each and every opportunity given. working with dior has been a smooth sailing ride as well as cartier — perhaps, given the option i wouldn’t opt for pathere de cartier but a different line. still, nothing really takes away from the heart and soul of their jewelry, which i appreciate with my cup of tea. i’d continue to work with dior, and if hermes would ever take the punch — i’d even have an affair with them.”
14. if you could be on any variety show, which one (or which type of one) would you want to be on?
“knowing brothers — i really watch that show. or even, 전지적 참견 시점 — those are the shows i keep tabs of on a weekly basis. i'd love my manager to have her time to shine and steal the hearts of the world with her variety work. she’s a very funny person you know. as for knowing brothers? that’s a given knowing how quick the crowd is on their feet and the little mini-games that come from each episode. i hurt my stomach each time from laughing along so many times.”
16. what changes would you implement if you were the ceo of your company?
“a free-for-all. i’ve never wanted to become a ceo, but had i been granted the opportunity to rule on all floors, i’d implement a few things. mandatory art classes, and creative freedom to the album jackets for all my artists. no dating-bans, let it all air out — most of all, i’d let them do as they wished as long has it harmed nobody else and they could handle the aftermath. no restrictions, roam free, bunnies.”
17. what do you do to relieve the stress of idol life?
“call me pretentious or call me a sell-out, i do what any other normal person does. i like sitting in the cafes with my notebook out, sketching. i sketch people that come in and out, or the people that decide to sit next to me. if i’m home, i’m painting on canvas with my record player crooning in the background or knitting a sweater to wear next winter. on a really adventurous day, you’ll see me playing the pole or stretching my limbs at pilates. but that’s on a non-lazy day.”
18. what tips would you give to a trainee about to debut?
“wear your skin like armor, and let it thicken as time goes on. no need to get hurt by words, and instead roll with the punches — learn to accept the hate that comes, and be scrutinized underneath a microscope. sometimes, you don’t know if it’s really reality, but the faster you assimilate yourself, the quicker you learn to glide past your career. think of everything as a catch-22, only there’s no real safety net.”
19. what was the hardest part of being a trainee?
“getting along with the other people and have them stay away from getting to know me. it’s obvious, the trainee life is temporary — there’s going to be those that debut and those that don’t, so why pry further than you have to? everyone should’ve been given the basic privacy instead of trying to play formalities and get along. other than that, i hated dance practice and i still do. dance isn’t a strong suit, and having someone force me to follow a tempo i can’t march to was no fun at all.”
20. did you enjoy the lifestyle of a trainee or of a debuted idol more?
“i liked being a debuted idol far better, only because there was a layer of privacy given to me. ironically, i was suddenly in the public eye. yet, it still allowed some layer of anonymity within the inner circle and the day to day people i interacted with. starting from a sea of trainees, and having it dwindle to a group of my members — it all made it easier to handle in the end. besides, i was getting no sleep regardless trainee or not.”
22. describe your dream sub-unit (members and concept).
“take the fuse darker concepts — peekaboo, bad boy, psycho. and merge it into one, all while getting rid of the dresses too short to dress in. wrap it all together, and you get my favorite concept. i like mystery, and latent meanings behind pretty tunes, and being able to do that each comeback would be a dream. surely, the audience might get bored of it, but i wouldn’t and i’m allowed to be selfish, aren’t i? my dream sub-unit, i’d take sooah. without sooah, i don’t know what i’d do, really. she’s like a mini-mom, three years younger. then, i’d take kiana for the dance that sooah and i can’t handle. i suppose i’d add suji in there because i don’t think anyone can belt like she does, no offense to kiana. but there’s a heartier belt when suji does it. sorry to our leader, i guess.”
23. out of the following six options, would you rather be allowed to play a major hand in the lyrics, production, choreography, styling, music videos, or concepts you release?
“i started off in lyrics, so i’ll stay loyal till the end. i’ll keep to the lyrics, so i can continue to write the stories my heart wants to say. sometimes, i’ll fall into cliches, but that’s okay. if it’s not in music production or the general content of the song, i suppose i’d take a dabble in styling — and stop dressing myself in the short skirts making it impossible to dance. really, those are the only two things i’ll be selfish for.”
25. what is your least favorite part of being an idol?
“waking up early, not having enough time to draw — those would just be the superficial things, right? but really, there’s pros and cons to any jobs, just ask any office worker with a nine to five. however, if i’m given a sliver of honesty to wave my grievances, i’d like to mention that i don’t like working in short skirts that get shorter each comeback. i don’t like getting mauled by the public of who i make eye contact with or who i work with — i don’t like getting over criticized and the list goes on.”
26. what is your favorite part of being an idol?
“i’ve always been a story teller. i like crafting stories and telling my world for how i see it, and given this opportunity in music, i’m able to do so. i like playing with instruments, sketching out things for an album idea — the creative process while meeting new people along the way. it’s a journey, an adventure and most of all, it avoids stagnation. i’m on the move, go go go.”
27. would you rather be incredibly famous with a terrible reputation and hated by most or be fairly unknown with a good reputation and adored by those who know of you? why?
“i’m already disliked by most — they don’t like the way i dress, who i’m friends with or the manner in which i present myself. but i’m given the opportunity to ignore these things along the way, and learn to handle things bit by bit. given the choice, i’d rather hide in anonymity with the few around me enjoying my presence. i’ve learned by now, public opinion doesn’t correlate to much as it’s nothing more than a crow perched far away as poe would say.”
29. what have you learned about yourself and/or society since becoming a celebrity?
“i’ve only been taught life skills, such as time management and patience. in hindsight, i’ve learned how cruel people are to judge things from what they see at surface level. the world’s superficial — that’s a bitter pill to swallow. i don’t know much about myself as i haven’t gotten that part figured out. instead, i’ve just learned that the world is cruel and the people in it amount to little to no positivity — go figure.”

Welcome to the Dust Bowl
The Dust Bowl is the Hadestown modern au that @ratcarney and I have been working on for a long time. Welcome to the Dust Bowl, Hermes’ bar, and the world surrounding it. Orpheus bartends, Persephone owns a flower shop, Hades runs an electricity infrastructure company, and Eurydice is just trying to make it through the work day and get to graduation. Here, you’ll meet some of our major players, and get a glimpse into their world.
Somehow Jo and I have made this world that now encompases about 4 google docs, spans over 25K words worth of fics and headcanons (and that’s only counting the ones we haven’t lost to tumblr messenger), involves way more office romance and family drama than we ever could have predicted, and Keeps Us Up At Night. So here’s your entry point into the world.
You can see Seph and Eurydice here.
(written by me: developed with Jo)
Summer was lingering into September. There wasn’t a September in recent memory that brought such beautiful sun, such delicious warmth. Days were long, nights warm, and she had never felt as full as she did right now.
But her days still started early and ended late. Eurydice’s alarm buzzed every morning at ten to seven. Some mornings when she woke up, she was greeted by the sight of a sleeping Poet, or to the sound of soft talking in the next room over, usually Hermes. This morning was more solitary. She woke up alone in her bed, stretching to turn off the alarm.
Eurydice’s apartment wasn’t tidy, per se, but it was functional — a studio, most of the space occupied by the biggest bed she could afford, a small love seat she had found for cheap online, and a kitchen that was more a glorified cabinet with a sink, a hot plate, and a coffee machine. Also plants. When Seph first came over to check out her digs, she was appalled by the lack of greenery. Now every spare inch of space that received even an ounce of sunlight was filled with plants.
Her alarm sang and she begrudgingly pulled herself out of bed, and into the shower. She quickly fired off a text to the Poet as she waited for the water to heat up. She hadn’t seen him last night and it was now odd when she went more than a day without seeing him.
E: good morning poet 🌝 💞
She smiled to herself — he never did understand her emojis, but he put up with them. She knew it would be a couple hours before she heard anything back from him. The life of a bartender meant long nights and
Her morning went on uneventfully — She showered, got dressed in a black silk blouse and grey slacks, which made for appropriate, if boring, work attire, but she stashed another shirt in her bag for class, packed her school bag, and then was out the door. She would normally make coffee for herself but she had just paid her tuition and hadn’t had the cash to grocery shop that week. She would make some as soon as she got to the office.
Eurydice tried to get to work early — at least an hour before the boss man. She got more work done when he wasn’t around. Hadestown Corp was one of the largest businesses in the city. It provided infrastructure and electricity to all the big buildings in the state, and it was all run by Mister Hades himself. Eurydice used to work as his secretary, and it was a fine job but it was only part time work. She was smart, and Hades could see that. He could see that she would be better in a bigger role, so he promoted her to his personal assistant. They made a good team, even if she did refer to him as a dirty capitalist every once in a while.
***
Hades liked structure. Liked routine. He liked respect. He had worked tirelessly for over twenty years building the company to where it needed to be, building up a team of people that worked hard. He knew how to play his roles and took pride in how well he played them. To his wife, he was a loyal and strong husband. To his employees, he was the CEO, the fearless leader.
In short, Hades didn’t truly make much note of the personal lives of his employees.
Eurydice was the one exception. And he did not make it willingly.
He walked into his office, nodding to Eurydice as he passed her desk. She had her headphones on, her legs crossed in her chair and she was busy typing something on the computer. She half waved at him, mumbling “give me ten” as he walked into his office.
When she walked in, she had folders for him.
“Good morning, Eurydice,” Hades said, sipping his coffee.
“Don’t see what’s good about it, but yeah, good morning to you too,” she said, only half paying attention to him, her attention on the files in her hand. He rolled his eyes at her.
“I need you to sign off on vacation time for a couple people — Ahmad, Tim, and Jessie all put in requests last week,” she placed a folder on his desk, her eyes focused and her movements sharp. “I want to get it back to them, like, yesterday. And then I need you to sign off on catering for the office holiday party.” She placed the next folder on top of the other one.
“Which place?” He said, putting on his glasses to glance over the forms.
“Same people as last time. But we’re doing open bar — I’m not being in charge of drink tickets again, and you’ve got the cash to spend so why not spend it on us.” Once again, he rolled his eyes at her.
“Anything else?”
“Uhh, yes. Guest lists for the fundraiser in November. I’ve already run it by Seph, and she approves.”
“I really wish you would stop referring to my wife so casually. I don’t refer to your partner in such a way.”
“Yeah,” Eurydice scoffed. “That’s because Persephone is my friend, and you instill the fear of the Gods in my boyfriend.”
He held his hand out and took the guest list and seating chart from her, opening it to glance at what his wife had added to the list. “I’ll make some changes and once I’ve signed off on it, I’ll let you know.”
Eurydice made a face at him, and raised her hands in surrender. “If Seph gets angry, I’ve got nothing to do with it,” She said as she turned to leave his office. “Your meetings are all updated in the calendar!”
“Thank you,” He murmured low enough that she could hear him say something but couldn’t make it out. She shut the door behind her, and he pulled up their shared calendar. It all looked the same as it had yesterday — meetings about the southern expansion of the company, mostly, but towards the middle of the day, there was a 40 minute slot just titled “Personal” with a ... was that a leaf emoji? He shook his head, making a mental note to remind Eurydice to stop using emojis on the company calendar.
But he knew exactly what that personal slot meant. Lunch with the Misses. The day couldn’t go by fast enough.
***
Some days it felt like wherever Persephone went, the sunshine followed. She didn’t spend much time around the office, but when she stopped by, it felt like a breath of fresh air. She brought flowers with her, plants for desks, and lots of smiles to the workers.
Where Hades wore pinstripes, dark suits and polished shoes, she wore thrift store finds. When she walked into the office on this day, she was wearing a jumpsuit in her signature green, belted at the waist, and her hair piled up high on top of her head.
“Hey sweet thing,” she said waving to Jessie as she walked in. Jessie had taken over Eurydice’s old gig when she was promoted, and the young girl always had a smile to spare for Persephone. Seph stopped for a moment to lean over her desk.
“Good peonies won’t be around for another few weeks. I promise I didn’t forget,” she whispered, winking at Jessie. The young girl smiled wide.
“Oh Miss —“ Jessie started, but Persephone cut her off.
“Don’t ‘oh Miss Persephone’ me,” she said, pulling a small succulent out of her bag and placing it on her desk. “Now, if I catch you watering this more than once every two weeks, you’ll be in trouble!”
She continued her rounds. A sweet fern for Tim. A potted violet for Kimberly. Daisies for Afra. Foxglove and mint for the HR team.
“And for you,” she said, walking over to Eurydice’s desk. “Something from Mister Hermes.” She pulled a wrapped sandwich out of her bag, and passed it to the girl. She rolled her eyes but smiled nonetheless.
“Thanks, Seph,” she said, unwrapping it to see that it was one of the BLTs that she loved so much. “I’ll thank him when I see him tonight.”
“Don’t you have class tonight?”
She nodded, and sipped at her coffee. “Yup. Til seven, then I’ll head to the Dust Bowl.”
Seph slipped into an absolutely shit eating grin. “To see your Poet?” Eurydice laughed and shoved at her arm.
“Yes, to see my Poet,” she said, half-delighting in the way Seph smiled. She had been the one to introduce them, to shove them together in a sense. She had known Orpheus since he moved in with Hermes, and started working the bar, and when she met Eurydice, she thought that they would hit it off. But the duo they had become had exceeded her expectations.
“Well I might see you then. But now,” she said, picking up her bag and tapping Eurydice’s nose. “I’ve got a hot date.” Eurydice laughed and said goodbye as Seph walked up to Hades’ office door, knocking as she let herself in.
Hades looked up from his paperwork, and smiled as soon as he saw his wife.
“You’re early,” he said, standing up and walking over to her. He wrapped his arms around her, and she wrapped her arms around his neck. He leaned in to kiss her, and as their lips met, he dipped her slightly, just so that he could feel her smile against his lips.
“I missed ya,” she mumbled before pulling away. He took her hand and led her to the desk. He pulled one of the chairs around so she could sit next to him.
She placed her bag on his desk and he got to work unpacking the lunch she had brought them. Chicken with soft herbs. Fresh vegetables from her garden. She spoiled him and he knew it. But she loved to do it.
Her husband had whatever the opposite of a green thumb was — the company he had worked so hard to build was in direct opposition to the wilderness and nature that she loved so dearly. But her man was just that — he was just a man. A bit of a softie when it came to her, and just perfect for her.
So they sat and ate, and he held her hand, and smiled at her with those damn eyes of his. They looked like polar opposites from afar, but they had one thing in common—they loved each other fiercely.
***
Hermes was the owner of the Dust Bowl—a mix between a student bar and someplace a little more trendy. Either way, it was a hole in the wall. You had to know it was there in order to find it. He had been running the joint for well over 30 years. When he was laid off from the post office years ago, he took his severance package and invested the lot into this place. He gave it all he had.
And gods, it just kept on giving back to him.
He lived in the apartment above the bar, had lived there since he bought the joint. The Dust Bowl was his whole life. It was where he met Calliope, a young girl in a desperate situation. She had frequented the bar in it’s early days until she found out that she was pregnant and on her own. Hermes was there, along with her sisters, to walk with her through it all.
When Orpheus was born, Cal asked Hermes to be the boy’s Godfather. Which meant that he got to see Orpheus whenever he could, was there to watch him grow up, play his first instrument. It meant that, when Cal found out she was sick, when she found out she wasn’t going to get better, and when she passed away, leaving behind a boy of seventeen, Hermes had to be there to pick up the pieces.
He shared the space with Orpheus for a little while after Cal died. He barely ate, barely spoke, barely moved. It took long months of support, lots of tears, and finally some tough love from his Godfather and Aunt Euterpe, but he slowly started moving. He started playing music again. He started living again. They lived together until recently, when the boy decided he needed his own space -- he was ready for it. It was always a temporary arrangement anyway, and Hermes was glad to see him up on his feet.
The Dust Bowl had given him Calliope, a beautiful friendship. It gave him Orpheus, too, his sweet godson. And as time went on, it gave him Seph. And now Eurydice.
The dinner rush was just starting, and Hermes threw an apron at the boy behind the bar. “You’ll wreck your clothes if you don’t put this on,” He said laughing, and Orpheus smiled and slipped it on, going back to pulling drafts.
Hermes still worked the bar every so often, but he spent most of the time at his spot, ringing in orders and watching the ebb and flow of patrons. He liked his perch, liked getting to know who came in and when, and who they were with and why.
“Will Eurydice be stopping by tonight?” Hermes asked Orpheus when he was finished with customers. Orpheus nodded,  wiping down a couple glasses.
“She just texted, and she said she was on her way soon,” Orpheus said with a smile. Every time that boy smiled, Hermes wanted to knock on wood, point to the skies. It was a rough go after Orpheus lost his mom, and for a while, it felt like they would never see him smile again.
Then Eurydice entered their lives and it felt like it was only uphill. She had been living in town for years, taking classes at the university and working for Hadestown Corp. But it was only when she had been promoted to Hades’ assistant, and when she met Seph, that she stepped into the Dust Bowl for the first time. With her, she brought a cool breeze and the feeling that something exciting might happen. And she upended their lives for the better.
Hermes was broken from his train of thought by the sound of the bell on the door.
“Speak of the girl, and she shall appear!”
***
The sound of Hermes words and his laugh made the Poet perk up, smiling as he saw the girl walk through the door.
The regular patrons knew Orpheus and Eurydice from afar, so they just smiled when he left his post at the bar to run over and greet her. She reached up to cup his cheek, and he placed a soft hand at her waist, as they leaned in to share a quick kiss. She pulled him in, and was the one to pull back. Always in control, she was, and he was always willing to let her take it.
“How was class?” He asked, taking her hand and leading her to her favourite spot at the bar. She had changed clothes, swapping out her work blouse for a white cropped t-shirt. He recognized it as one of his own that had gotten holes at the hem that she must have cut up. She looked stunning as always.
“Boring,” she said, plopping down at her seat and dropping her bag on the counter. “Ran into Urania on the way there, though. She says hi.” Orpheus smiled at the name of his aunt who worked at the same university Eurydice attended.
“No bags on the bar, Girl,” Hermes shouted down to her, and she rolled her eyes. “Sorry, brother!” She shouted back, pushing her bag onto the seat beside her, before turning her attention back to Orpheus.
“How was your day?” She asked, reaching for his hand, which he gave her. She tangled their fingers together, smiling at the slightly tacky feeling of his fingers, no doubt due to the alcohol.  She ran her thumb over the heel of his hand, and his calloused fingers danced against hers.
“It was good. Did some writing,” He said smiling wide at her, and she grinned back.
“Finish anything?” She asked. He was cagey with his work that he deemed unfinished, and rarely was his work ever finished.
“Not yet, but almost. Soon.” She nodded and leaned over, placing a kiss on his lips once again. “Come home with me?” He asked when she pulled back.
“Sure. But you’ve got customers, Poet,” she grinned, leaning back in her chair. He blushed a bit when he realized and he pushed off the bar to start making drinks.
She hopped off her seat and walked over to Hermes. The man had an air of cool to him, with his shoes shined, and his suit crisp. He looked timeless and placeless in the best possible way. “Thanks for lunch. You really don’t have to do that.” Hermes scoffed and brushed her off.
“I know you’re strapped for cash right now, kid. It’s the least I can do,” Hermes said, placing a hand on her arm. Orpheus was watching the interaction from where he stood pouring wine for a table. Eurydice had been something akin to a lone wolf before he had met her, and now she had more people than she knew what to do with. When Orpheus and Eurydice officially became a couple, she gained Seph, Hermes, and the rest of Orpheus’ family, including his eight aunts. Eurydice loved fiercely and she attracted people who did the same.
“What are your plans for tonight?” Eurydice asked when Orpheus had finished with customers. He nodded to Hermes, and asked “do you want me to close up tonight?” Hermes shook his head.
“You kids have fun,” He said to them. “Once we’ve hit last call at 10, you’re free to go. Just don’t forget to restock the bar.”
“I’ve got that,” she said, hopping behind the bar, and grabbing Orpheus’ notepad from his back pocket. She leaned in to kiss his cheek and he whispered a quick ‘thank you’ as she did. Orpheus loved the Dust Bowl, but the downstairs stock room sometimes sent him into a panic. It was too far underground, and the space was too tight for his liking. It meant a lot that, without prompt or asking, Eurydice jumped in to take over. She knew how debilitating his panic attacks could be — she would never forget finding him on the floor, shaking like a leaf, the first time she had seen him during a panic attack. She would do whatever she could to prevent them.
“Stop hopping the bar,” Hermes said to her, shaking his head, but she was already over it, leaning down under the bar, counting bottles and cans and kegs, tallying up what was left. Once she had made a few trips back and forth to stock the bar, and once Orpheus had called for last rounds, the two wished Hermes a good night, as they headed out.
Once outside of the bar, Eurydice pulled him off to the side of the pavement and took his face in her hands. She pulled him down to her level and gently kissed him. He responded with enthusiasm, his hands finding her hips, just like she taught him how she liked it. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him like she was breathing him in, and he gave himself over to her.
It could have been seconds or minutes or months or years, but when Eurydice pulled back, gone was the weight of the work day, and the pressure of her classes. All that was left behind was a look of relaxation, and it was all Orpheus could do to not kiss her right back. He wanted nothing more than to see her relaxed and well rested, to see her happy with no reservations.
He squeezed her hips slightly, and she smiled gently at him. “Hi,” she said, nudging his forehead with hers.
He smiled. “Hi.”
“You gonna take me home?” she asked, and he nodded softly.
“If you’ll let me,” he said, his voice light. Eurydice looked up into his big, beautiful eyes, and she questioned how she didn’t follow him home the first night she met him. Orpheus, with his big heart, and eyes that hid nothing, had told her he was in love with her after only a few days of knowing her. She tried to keep her distance, but there was something magnetic about him. She couldn’t keep herself away, couldn’t remove herself from his orbit.
She kissed him again, softly this time. Still filled with passion and want, but gentler, and only briefly. “Always,” she said. Orpheus knew that four months ago she never would have dreamed of uttering that word to someone. He knew how tightly guarded she kept herself. And his heart fluttered at the thought that he was allowed to hear her say these things. That he was allowed to be the one who got to take her home, and kiss her, and tell how special she was. It was Orpheus who she had chosen, baggage and all.
He threaded his fingers through hers, and they started their walk back to Orpheus’ apartment, surrounded by a city still clinging onto summer, and blissfully in love.

There are 3 cables – one running to the top control board, and two head cables connected to the mainboard. You’ll find it easier to remove the top chassis bar which is secured by plastic rivets on either side. It lifts up and slides backwards and is removed as a unit including the door. The mechanism is held in by 4 screws – two at the top and two at the bottom to either side. Had there been irreparable damage it is likely this particular machine wouldn’t warranted an article, so the fact that you’re reading this is a spoiler for a happy ending. Amazingly nothing was broken – and even more amazingly, the tiny E clip that secures the capstan in place was still to be found in the bottom of the deck. Thanks to its handling by Hermes there were bits of the mechanism strewn about the chassis, including the flywheel and capstan and parts of the door mechanism. I actually rebuilt this mechanism before any of the pictures were taken. They’re also well-priced and quickly delivered. Mine was kindly supplied by DeckTech, from whom you can purchase quality belts that unlike many of the cheap belt kits you find online are actually manufactured to meet or exceed original specifications for wow and flutter. The mechanism requires a 63 mm x 4 mm belt. The flywheel has no thrust plate, so the belt can be simply unhooked and a new one threaded into place without even removing the mechanism from the chassis. This has to be the simplest cassette deck in which to change belts. There are two motors, one driving the reels via a reduction gear and the other driving the capstan flywheel via the single belt. It is solenoid-driven via the large gear beneath the primary flywheel. The simplicity of this mechanism however is its greatest strength. Lifting the lid reveals mostly a box of air, with a couple of circuit boards, a power transformer and a mechanism that leaves one in no doubt of its production era. In this article we’ll delve into the internals of the machine. Mark has the original model but as far as I know the two are functionally identical. Its features and their operations were covered by Mark Pearce in his 2017 review of his KX-580, which you can read Here. And of course the crowning feature was Dolby S, along with B, C and HX Pro. Based around a chassis more solid than most with plenty of features including automatic tape calibration, music scan, a mechanical tape stabiliser and play trim treble adjustment. This was a last gasp for the cassette format after all.Īnd as last gasps go it’s a good one. There are no mechanical or mechatronic alterations a dual-capstan mechanism would have been nice, as would 3 heads, but alas. This ‘tuning’ extends only to electronic tweaks including Nichicon Muse capacitors, copper bus bars in the power supply and a few op-amp substitutions. The KX-580SE was a special edition tuned for the UK market. I do wish UPS and DPD would increase their spread in this area, so as to rule out convenience as a factor in a seller’s choice of courier and put an end to Hermes rein of destruction and package loss. The prevalence of drop shops make Hermes all too convenient for eBay sellers. Subsequently shipped with Hermes, so some reassembly and repair was required on late receipt. Purchased in mint condition in the original box because the price was too good not to. Herein a tail of Yamaha’s penultimate flagship cassette deck, the KX-580SE.
