Lonely Souls in a Pandemic
“It’s weird how a pandemic and being separated from people I hardly knew who lives in this city with me brought us so much closer together.”
by Teah Abdullah
I’ve lived away from Brunei a total of three times since I was 19, and I could count the amount of times I’ve been homesick on one hand. In fact, I’ve only been homesick once.
And now we’re in this pandemic, and it threw me completely by surprise.
In March last year, I forced my parents to go back to Brunei when they had only visited me in Australia for three weeks instead of the original three months. The decision was because my father is immunosuppressed, and their health insurances do not cover for pandemics. At the time, the decision felt easy, even though there’s a weight in my heart knowing that I probably won’t see my family for another year or so.
My anxiety, which I was learning to manage with the help of my therapist, was high when Covid-19 travelled to Australia quickly, bar graphs on the television screen shot up day in and day out. I lived alone in a large apartment, took up all sorts of hobbies (remember Animal Crossing???) and dated somebody who was bad for me to fill the void my family had left. I had zoom classes for my martial arts, and each time the classes ended, I told everybody how much I missed and loved them.
What I really missed was the comfort of family. I think back to when I lived in Singapore for three years and how I was able to fly home any given weekend with cheap flight tickets due to privileges attained by my mother who works for the airline. Living in London was great because my brother was an hour and a half train ride away, and would regularly visit me to fill the void we both felt that only family could fill even though all we did was laze the weekend away in my flat.
With a pandemic and living in an isolated city on an isolated island, with restrictions imposed on just about any country that would make me or my family come physically closer to one another, I could feel the sickness that only home could remedy. I miss the comfort of my bed in Brunei, the shuffle of Bapa’s feet as he entered the living room, the feel of my mother’s arm linked into mine for support so she can walk straight, the sound of my brother’s grunt when he agrees to a suggestion, the boom of my older brother’s laugh, and the sound of my sister’s car engine driving up the driveway.
I no longer know how my two year old niece’s weight would feel if I carry her. She thinks I’m a YouTube video every time I video call her.
It’s bloody hard, living alone, not verbally talking to people directly for days sometimes, anxious of touching surfaces while trying to manage a relationship that I knew wasn’t meant to be in in the first place. I kept it to myself and told my friends back home, until I had to consult my therapist one day (face to face, thank goodness) of how much I was struggling, especially as someone who was on the tail end of recovering from an event that led to me developing post-traumatic stress disorder syndrome. Her advice was to make plans with the one friend I have by organising walks, and ensuring we stay at a safe distance from each other.
That was the start of it, really. The void in my heart, I realised, was also experienced by so many other people stranded in Canberra, a city filled with people who did not grow up there. Jemma and I took walks every Friday evening and watched films afterwards at a safe distance from each other. Tina and Hannah came for dinner at my place every Saturday evenings, each occupying one side of the dining table in order to help each other cope. Adam—having lost a family member—and I began talking to each other every day to help fill our loneliness, and Steph, separated from her partner and her family, would text me telling me how much she misses seeing me or sparring in sword class with me.
As their love filled me, I broke up with the man I was dating.
It’s weird how a pandemic and being separated from people I hardly knew who lives in this city with me brought us so much closer together.
As restrictions began to ease, and contact sports were allowed touching, I found myself missing the feel of being touched—something I didn’t realise I needed—even though it meant that my hapkido training partners were throwing me to the ground. The friendships I developed in lockdown developed outside the comfort of my home and smart phone, and I found myself turning into an incredibly social being, ensuring that my days are filled with friends I cared about, telling people I love that I love them even if they don’t feel the same way, transforming myself from being a cold pessimist to the warmest version of myself.
Acquaintances whom I didn’t know the life of early in 2020 became close friends who’d consult me with their life problems. I became the person people go to for cuddles. I was spoilt with options by people who wanted to adopt me as their family for Christmas. My friends and I closed a bar to celebrate my birthday when the year before I only stayed at home.
The truth is I don’t know when I’ll see my family again. It could be this year, or it could be the next. But the thing is I’ve somehow managed to make my own found family here. It doesn’t have the same warmth as my real family, but it is just as special—lonely souls in a middle of pandemic reaching for one another to fill a void.

seasons in New Zealand
new zealand travel time>/days>Since I like to travel a lot and like to travel a lot, the flight search is always a factor that determines the biggest part of my budget. Therefore it is extremely important for me to buy cheap flight tickets. So the smallest continent on earth is still big enough for four different climate zones. Because of these differences you have the possibility to travel Australia with pleasant temperatures all year round. To determine the best route for your holiday in Australia, it is therefore important to consider what you want to see and when you want to travel. The following information will show you when and where the climate in Australia is best for your planned holiday. Intensive agriculture is practised in the plains, while extensive grazing predominates in many other places. East of the central plain, the landscape is steppe-like due to low precipitation. The northern parts of the North Island lie in the subtropical climate zone and are largely covered with rainforest in less populated places. These are rainforests of the temperate and subtropical zone, which differ significantly from the rainforests of the tropical zone in terms of fauna and flora. A comparable vegetation with often evergreen deciduous and coniferous woods and partly tree ferns can be found on the south coast of South Africa, in Tasmania, Chile and along the Pacific coast from California to Canada. The months of November to March are ideal for trips to Canberra. Until a few years ago, the average New Zealand vacationer was a backpacker or bungee jumper.

The month of September can surprise with temperature extremes. On some days there is still ground frost, on others a pleasant warmth can already be felt. During the day temperatures reach an average of 17°C. At night the temperature usually falls below 10°C, but occasionally it can still drop below freezing. Even if the sun only shines up to five hours a day, it already shows its power and ensures that the snow melts.

Rain is only expected on about eight days a month. This makes December one of the months of the year with the least precipitation.

Cappadocia Capers
Today we visit the wonders of Cappadocia. Over breakfast Genevieve reported back on the balloon flight. Apparently is was fabulous if a little crowded in the basket with upwards of 20 people jostling for best positions. But she was glowing about the experience. Did we have a little balloon ride envy? Maybe a little bit but comfortable with the decision having both ballooned previously and the cost of €175 each (total $550+) was going to knock the budget around a bit.
Several stops were made during the course of the morning to view various sections of Cappadocia. It is an amazingly weird and wonderful sight. This natural phenomenon was caused by ancient volcanic eruptions blanketing the area with thick ash which solidified into a soft rock called tuff - something a little contradictory there I feel. Anyway, over thousands of years wind and water have shaped the landscape forming hills and mounds, lumps and bumps, crags and scrags, big and small, fat and thin. Some of the mounds, so charmingly called fairy chimneys are tall, tapering to skinny then topped with a fat blob. The area stretches into the distance and just when you think you have seen them all there is another vast plain of nobbles and bobbles. Plus many have been carved out and used as homes. Imagination is the key and we were encouraged to use it. The shapes and figures to be ‘found’ were so varied; a man in repose on a chair, kangaroos galore, a camel, birds, a buffalo. We all delighted in letting the mind go into creative free fall.
But while our imagination was busy seeing things in rocks Nahjo’s was centered on his commissions from shopping outlets cutting short our visits to some of the sights. As with all tours it was announced we would be going to the dreaded factories. First stop was the ‘Hi tits keramics’ (sic) . With a name like that I was immediately interested and Chris was definitely on board. And sure enough there on the factory was a sign ’Hi Tits’. Unfortunately high tits weren’t part of their range. Dougal finally worked out what was being referred to was in fact Hittites the ancient people who occupied Turkey (then Anatolia) prior to 1700 BC.
On approach we were given our time allowance of 40 minutes which seemed excessive compared to the 15 minutes at the rock formations. At this point Chris complained about the time imbalance which while didn’t reduce the time at the keramic factory seemed to result in longer visits to the next rock ‘panoramas to make some pictures’.
Trudged into keramics factory with Nahjo looking for a volunteer to spin some clay on a wheel. Needless to say Mr Russia was an enthusiastic rapid-fire volunteer. The gig was his. First we watched the pro then Mr Russia did his bit. Mrs Russia and son seemed mightily impressed. Next the showrooms and all the painted keramics. One design was supposed to be so intricate that only 5 master potters were skilled enough to create it. Dougal noted that these guys must be prolific considering the number of that design for sale. Mr Russia was convinced and bought one. Meanwhile Chris took a shining to an urn, entering into half-hearted negotiations while the group began heading out to the bus. Dougal noted that considering Chris’ earlier time objections he would lose all credibility if he was last out. Fortunately he joined the rest of us as we loaded back onto the bus with the keramics staff hot on his heels reducing the cost with every step. No deal.
Following some more visits to other sites with some amazing formations (they are so intriguing and oddly beautiful) it was time for the Open Air Museum. This site is a religious precinct containing a number of churches, chapels (or shapelles according to Nahjo) and a nunnery. Most of the churches belong to the 10th, 11th or 12th Century. Each chapel was cut into the rock with layers of decoration. Latter more intricate paintings had flaked away on some walls and ceilings revealing more rudimentary red paintings on the raw walls. The most magnificent one was apparently the Dark Church that Doug, Gene and Chris raved about. Apparently the paintings in there were the best preserved of all due to minimal light exposure. My claustrophobia got in the way of me visiting it. There were also some other ‘caves’ which were home to kitchens with adjoining dining area housing a table that would easily accommodate the largest of families at Christmas. Overall it was a fabulous museum and not overly crowded. Sadly no photos allowed.
Next the leather factory which was the same if somewhat provincial version of the one Chris and I had seen on the previous tour. Less glamorous models, no dimmed lights but the same deafening music. Dutifully followed the boss into the display rooms. Gene and Doug had no interest while at Chris’ persuasion I tried on a few things. Helps to be not really interested as the price plummets commensurate to lack of interest. One suede jacket dropped from starting price of $500 to final price of $250. Being the proud owner of new leather from Istanbul I didn’t need another no matter how cheap. Needless to say Mr Russia bought one for himself. Nothing for Mrs Russia.
By now it was about 2pm with Nahjo telling us the restaurant would be too busy so we wouldn’t be eating until 2.30. More rumblings from Aunty Margaret and Tina who were clearly unimpressed. So it was into the sweet and nut factory across the road where we all stuffed down samples to take the edge off our appetites. Finally Nahjo deemed it ok for us to head for lunch only to find out the kitchen closed at 3pm and it was nearly that now.
This played into our hands beautifully having not forked out for another abysmal lunch. Trouble was the poor local cafe we descended on was a one horse show that couldn’t cope with the sudden surprise influx at 3pm. Koftas were raw and chicken dry but we had a good laugh about it.
Nahjo’s on being asked cultural questions along the way had advised he would be answering them later. Well the time had come. This was Nahjo’s biggest moment of the tour. He was to play leading man in his own cultural play. We were taken into a local’s home built into one of the rock pinnacles. (Unfortunately we didn’t get any information about the home although the bloke who lived there spoke good English). A little claustrophobic for me so I headed for the window seat and quietly observed the performance that followed. Nahjo took the role of a suitor about to be introduced to his new partner’s family. Everyone was assigned roles as mother, father, grandparents, sisters, brothers, cousins or friends of the sweethearts. (Think he could see I was unimpressed as I only got to be a distant cousin as an after thought). But we were all supporting roles to Nahjo’s cameo. He clearly relished being lead actor, director, script writer and narrator remaining front and center the entire interminable performance.
At last when it was over we were released to the balcony where we enjoyed chi. But we left with our sum of knowledge about the underground houses unchanged. (How did they hollow them out, how old was the one we were in, how long had the gentleman lived there, does he own it or does the government etc...who knows?)
Finally returned to the ‘Special Class’ hotel in time for dinner and for those who had opted in for the Turkish night (interest level zero for us 4) to doll themselves up for €30 of guaranteed belly dancing and bottomless glasses. Aunty Margaret, Tina and Holly headed out in their party frocks ready for a big night. And my bet is Mr Russia would have been first up to gyrate with the dancers.
We bypassed dinner at the hotel instead opting to eat at a local cafe in town. Lentil soup (a Turkish favorite) Koftas - cooked this time - and stuffed zucchini were excellent. The wine apparently was not.
The tour while not 5 star, 4 star, 3 star and arguably not even 2 star was a whole lot of fun. Many laughs were had and in years to come we will enjoying reliving it as it’s often the dodgy holiday events that live with us the longest.
Tomorrow the tour returns to Side via another couple of factories while Chris and I and later Doug and Gene catch flights to Istanbul. From there Chris and I leave Turkey for Malta and Doug & Gene return to Canberra.

Virgin slashes flights to as low as $69 across Australia ahead of Christmas travel | Daily Mail Online
Virgin Australia has launched a massive sale with tickets starting from as little as $69 ahead of the Christmas holidays.
The airline launched its Cheers to 20 Years Sale on Thursday with slashed prices for Australians to prepare their next getaway.
Those looking to take advantage of the cheap fares must hurry as tickets will be on sale until October 27, unless sold out prior.
The travelling dates on offer are between November 25 and March 31, 2021.
Tickets from Sydney to Byron Bay (pictured) one way are on sale for only $75
Tickets for Melburnians who want to travel to Launceston (pictured) have also been slashed for just $79
Sydneysiders looking for a break elsewhere can head to the Gold Coast for just $69 one way, or a bit further up north to Brisbane for $89.
Those wanting to stay within the state, can book tickets to Byron Bay one way for only $75.
Melburnains who want to escape the state for a much needed break following a strict lockdown can head to Adelaide for $89, Canberra for $119 or Brisbane for $129.
Flights to Alice Springs from Adelaide are listed for $169, but those wanting to head to Brisbane will play slightly less at $129.
With Tasmania slowly opening up its borders, flights from Brisbane to Hobart have been slashed to $139.
Tickets for Melburnians who want to travel to Launceston have also been slashed for just $79.
The airline is also offering flights to Perth but travellers must quarantine for 14 days in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

A Virgin Australia spokesperson said that it was exciting for them to offer cheaper flights as state borders and restrictions begin to ease.
'With borders slowly reopening and more Australians excited to explore their own backyard, we're making it easy for them to get to wherever they need to go, with our 20th birthday sale fares from just $69 including baggage and seat selection,' they said.
'The aviation and tourism industries rely on a connected nation and we hope that borders continue to safely reopen and more Australians return to the skies.'
The sale comes just a week after Virgin Australia CEO Paul Scurrah stepped down from his role after the airline reported $349million in losses during a turbulent year.
Mr Scurrah will remain in office until November when the airline is taken over by US private equity firm Bain Capital, with former Jetstar boss Jayne Hrdlicka set to then fill his position.
'I have continued to be so proud of the way my team and our entire organisation has fought to save this airline and to keep competition alive and well in Australia,' Mr Scurrah said in a statement on October 15.
'We have succeeded in not just ensuring the future of the company, but also reset the business to ensure it is well placed to deliver for Bain Capital for many years to come.'

JUST TRYING TO GET TO MELBOURNE
Not having much luck here in my quest to get from Tokyo to Melbourne. As I write I am stranded in Canberra. I have run the Canberra Marathon three times but this visit I am stuck in a plane in the Canberra airport going nowhere.
Things did not start too well in Tokyo. Apparently after a long week end a lot of workers in Japan consider how empty and meaningless their lives are once they are back at work and then go off and kill themselves. Pretty sad. Someone jumped in front of my train to Hanada airport. Long delay forecast. It was time to get away from mass public transport.
Took a taxi to the airport. Living close to Hanada airport the train cost is around 300 yen...Taxi cost 5000 yen...such is life.
Qantas lounge in Tokyo was very nice as was the service in the plane. Not sure how those back in cattle class find things but when you fly higher levels things are made very pleasant for you. I think I slept a lot of the way which is a big plus. Meals none to bad either. Chose the Japanese breakfast.
Anyway that is when things took a turn for the worse. I was travelling via Sydney and my bags took an age to be unloaded. I had two hours between flights but that wasn’t enough so I took the next available flight which was 4 hours later. Sydney bag handlers are the worse. You would think those folks travelling in the cheapo seats would get their bags last, but apparently not.
On the plus side of things the Qantas Lounge in Sydney was fantastic. One of the best going around. I am a Life Member of the Qantas Club and although not cheap to join has proved its worth time after time in the last few years. Nice touch having a barista for coffee.
Anyway that is when things took ANOTHER turn for the worse. Storms in Melbourne prevented us landing although we circled the airport time after time. I did not know it at the time but the whole airport was closed.
In fact we circled so many times we ran out of fuel and had to divert to Canberra to refuel. There was talk of us staying the night in Canberra but then we got a text saying we would take off at 8 PM. Not really sure why text was sent as it was only based on hope apparently.
For a while it looked like we were to be stranded at the lovely Canberra Airport ( inside the plane ) for most of the night.
Eventually we got moving and I was home just before midnight.
MEDITATION : I did this a number of times on the plane. I think it helped a lot.
RUNNING: I was hoping to get a run in in the afternoon but spent all of the afternoon and the evening on a plane.
I did purchase an extremely good book via Amazon which I pretty much finished reading on Kindle on my iPad.

Location Australia: Travel Survival Tips
Australia is an isolated nation located between the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific Ocean. The particular content is almost the same size as the contiguous 48 says of the USA. With Canberra as its capital, Australia's distinctive plant life, marine life, and wildlife make it an interesting visitor destination for those who can afford it. The low crime rate can make Australia an ideal place to enjoy a vacation without having to worry about individual security more than what is normally necessary. Outback exploration, Excellent Barrier Reef snorkeling, Fraser Island camping activities, along with Uluru (Ayer's Rock) sightseeing are among the many tourist attractions obtainable in Australia. With the aforementioned things in mind, I will construct a few useful travel tips and information for those planning on making it towards the wild outback.
Travel Documentation - If you are planning to enter Quotes, you will need a valid tourist visa. Australian tourist visas usually can be obtained at your local Australian embassy or on the internet, assuming that your current passport has not and will not expire during the time you plan on spending in the country. This visa is usually entered into your own personal passport before you enter the country and is valid for three to 6 months.
Money Matters - As is with the majority of places that are modern and up to date, plastic can prove to be the very best and most easy method of payment. Visa, MasterCard, and most CREDIT cards are accepted as long as they carry either the particular INTERLINK, MAESTRO, EUROCARD, CIRRUS, PLUS or STAR worldwide ATM mark. However, as a traveler please familiarize yourself with typically the fees or service charges that are involved with using your cards at a foreign location; and yes they do have TELLER MACHINE machines in most major towns. If you plan on using traveler's checks, please understand that you will more than likely be charged fees or commission when exchanging them; because they can usually be cashed at banks and larger hotels and nowhere otherwise. Changing foreign currency can be done at most banks or at the forex kiosks at the international airports.
Transportation - A good way of getting about, is the nice little invention called the rent the car. Consider that you have an international drivers license if you plan on using a current and aren't sure if your regular license will be approved. Remember, all traffic drives on the left-hand side from the road in Australia. If you plan on outback exploration which will require driving on roads that are not main roads, make sure you thoroughly check that all things are working properly on your vehicle. Additionally, let someone know ahead of time the details of where you are heading so that everybody can take the necessary emergency precautions if you do not come back on time. And remember that in most country locations; animals occasionally congregate in the road, and quickly approaching headlamps can easily confuse animals so that they will not know which strategy to use. So please be very careful.
The Sun and its Heat - Sunlight in Australia can get very hot and carries high UV light levels so it can easily be compared to desert-like circumstances. It is illegal to leave animals or small children straightened in vehicles while the weather is hot, this can furthermore result in a fine being issued. It is a good practice to use SPF 30 or better sunscreen in these type of conditions to avoid damage.
Going Swimming - Whether it is the Great Barrier Reef, Typically the Ningaloo Reef, or the Golden Surf; the beach and sea is an integral part of Australian life and Australian tourist. Please be informed that there are poisonous and deadly creatures lurking in these waters such as the box jellyfish, coral snakes, rockfish, sharks, and many others that are known to cause death. It really is wise to swim only in flagged areas that are close to beaches that are regularly patrolled. Sometimes crocodiles swim within salt water when they are changing habitat, so it is a good idea to know what you may be up against. Heed all warning signs when they are seen. And remember that this Australian surf is rough and there are dangerous rip tides that are capable of making swimming difficult and deadly.
Important info to know - If an ambulance, police, or fireman is required then the number to dial is 000. North American electric appliances will require a voltage converter adapter socket to operate in Australia because the Australian electrical supply is 240/250 v compared to the North American 110/115 volts. You are now ready for your personal journey to the wild outback and beyond. Be secure in your travels.
Australia Travel Visas
Coming to Australia to go to the country on a short-term basis can be made possible by applying for any tourist visa. Generally, these visas last for three months however there are certain types of travel visas that can be extended to are a year. These visas can easily be renewed in Australia offering that the owner can support himself without the need of working in the nation. Travel visas do not permit owners to work in Quarterly report.
Electronic travel application (ETA) visa is a type of Aussie travel visa obtained electronically. There are three kinds of ETA's: holiday and visiting, short validity business, and lengthy validity business. Holiday and visiting ETA or subclass 976 visa is valid for multiple entries inside one year. However, each visit should be limited to at most about three months. On the other hand, short validity business ETA or subclass 977 visas are applicable for businessmen who go to Queensland for business conferences. These visas permit people to do brief trips to the country to attend meetings, seminars or perform client visits. The visa entitles the holder to 1 visit for every three months. Lastly, long validity business ETA visas are very much alike with short validity integral. The difference lies in the length of stay allowed in each check out. Long-term validity visas authorize their owners to stay for the most part three months each visit.
ETA's can be obtained online. There are websites that offer ETA visa processing. This service is particularly appealing for families who wish to visit Australia together. Each of them must have an ETA visa to be able to visit Australia. Among the specifications for applying an ETA online are valid given for each traveler and valid credit card. Results of the application can be looked at before the applicant leaves the site. A reference number will also be supplied. This reference number can be used to check an ETA and print out details of the visa. To protect the applicants from deceptive acts, the reference numbers are handled in a confidential and private manner.

Perth, Australia - Travel Tips
What to do
Nobleman Park - Right in the middle of the city, this is one of Perth's biggest attractions, visited by over a million people annually, here you can find a lovely array of local flora, fountains monuments in addition to rolling green ovals. This is also a great place to do your individual morning jog or workout.
Spend a day or a few in neighboring Fremantle. It has a style all of it's personal and is known as one of the most laid back places in Most Affordable Cheap Vacation Australia. I suggest heading over to the Little Creatures Brewery, WA's greatest beer.
Rottnest Island is just a short ferry ride from the Port of Perth and can be toured on hill bike in a number of hours. This place really is special. They have some of the best beaches you will ever see and accommodation is also accessible.
Quick Facts
- Perth is the Capital of Traditional western Australia, - The nearest other major Australian city is actually Adelaide, Lying 2104 kilometers to the East. - Perth is Home to 1 . 4 million, people - You can expect as much as 300 days of sunshine a year and a Mediterranean climate
Obtaining there
Cruise liners will often stop in Perth but just about all visitors arrive through a national or international flight. Whenever traveling from elsewhere in Australia, a train is also a choice but it's a little pricey for most budgets. Whereas tour bus rides can be long and uncomfortable. So neither really is a recommended way to travel.. Many have described the 2100 km drive from Adelaide or 2700 km long term from Darwin as being a "Once in a lifetime experience" The majority of foreigners find the idea a little daunting to say the least.
Environment
Summers are hot and long in Perth plus temperatures may reach up to 100 F or 38 D between October and April. During these months, the likewise warmish nights are perfect to go beachside, catch up with buddies and take in a sunset or a meal.

Brisbane Matilda Trip- January 14 2017
So I haven’t written a review before but I haven’t seen or heard too much about the Brisbane Matildas so I thought somebody might be interested in hearing about my wonderful show experiences. WARNING- this ended up being a very very long and detailed post!! I was lucky enough to see the show a few times in Sydney but it’s been almost a year since I saw my last show (Sydney closing) and I was having Matilda withdrawals. So in November I booked a trip to Brisbane with my mum to see the show again. It’s quite a trip to Brisbane for me- a 5 hour drive from Canberra to Newcastle to meet my mum and then a flight to Brisbane- so I booked cheap restricted view seats in order to be able to afford to see two shows. My mum had seen the show with me once in Sydney and had not particularly enjoyed the actress’ portrayal of Matilda in that performance. She’s quite critical and hadn’t enjoyed the stoic, expressionless take on the character. I was definitely hoping she’d enjoy the show a bit more this time around because I wanted someone to be as excited about the show as I am. The Matinee performance featured Annabella Cowley as Matilda, Ethan Beer as Bruce, Alice Lowther as Lavender, Reuben Rivalland as Nigel, Caliese McEachern as Amanda, William Todd as Eric, Romme Williams as Alice, Emma Cobb as Hortensia and Zac McCulloch as Tommy. All the main adult cast were on except Rachel Cole was on for Mrs Phelps. I’ll start by saying that our seats for this performance weren’t great which I knew in advance. They were on the far right of the stage and about a third was obstructed from view. That being said I wasn’t bothered by it and we were only about 6 rows back so we had a close view of all of the front of the stage. However being school holidays there were lots of young kids in the audience and it was a bit noisy. I had a 4-5 year old girl behind me and she struggled to understand most of the show. She was constantly asking her mum questions and although she was super cute she was pretty loud. At the end of the show, just before the Wormwoods and Rudolpho rush in Matilda is standing quite close to the front of the stage on the right looking out over the audience. The little girl comes out with “Mummy, why isn’t she waving at me? Why isn’t Matilda waving at me?” It took all my might to hold in my laughter it was so sweet but I’m pretty sure the entire audience (not to mention the performers) could hear her. Annabella was very good. I can’t work out exactly how to describe her portrayal of Matilda. She was fearless but a little bit aloof and softer than some I’ve seen. I personally really enjoyed her version of Quiet (my favourite song in the show) and some of her line deliveries were particularly good. She did stumble on a few of her lines and although her accent was quite good it was a bit forced and I could see her concentrating on it for most of the show. I’d love to see her again a bit further into the run to see what she would add to her performance once the accent comes more naturally. Ethan Beer as Bruce was the stand-out of the other children. His monologue before Bruce was the clearest, and best-timed/articulated that I’ve heard. His vocals in Revolting Children were excellent and his dance moves were outstanding. I was really impressed with him. There were no other real standouts amongst the kids in this performance. When it comes to the adult cast I always leave feeling awestruck. I know I’m biased but I feel like we are incredibly lucky to have these talented performers in the show. Elise McCann is such a warm, soft and gentle Miss Honey and you can really feel the connection she has with each of the children. Her voice is also beautiful. Marika Aubrey is faultless. Seriously I can’t imagine seeing anyone else as Mrs Wormwood she’s just so incredible. For me Loud is a song that I think could be quite annoying but she sings it with the perfect mix of spoken lines and variance in volume, inflection and tone that it’s supremely confident and patronising without going over the top or being screechy. James Millar also never fails to impress me. His comedic timing with line delivery, paired with his physical comedy skills are so brilliant. I think he gets more laughs out of the audience each show than the other cast members combined. This was my first time seeing Rachel Cole as Mrs Phelps and I quite enjoyed her portrayal although quite different to Cle Morgan’s. Rachel’s Mrs Phelps has a very endearing, and in my opinion, convincing Irish accent and comes across as much more child-like and excitable than Cle’s. She just seems so enthralled and amazed by Matilda and her stories and she seemed to interact with Annabella a lot more which I enjoyed. Overall both my mum and I thought the performance was very good and we were excited to be going back to see the evening performance. Although I had tried not to see or hear too much about the Matildas before going I had listened to a recording of Venice and I hoped to get the chance to see her. When I walked into the lobby of the theatre for the evening performance and saw Eva’s name on the screen I’ll admit I was slightly disappointed... that feeling did not last long. After seeing 5 different Matildas in 6 performances (and numerous other musicals) I have to say that I have never experienced such a powerful performance. I feel so privileged to have witnessed this show. It was absolutely phenomenal!!! Besides Eva the evening performance featured the same adult and child cast with the exception of Exodus Lale as Bruce. The audience for this performance was so much better than the one earlier in the day and right from the first lines of miracle they were involved. The whole show was filled with laughter, applause and cheers and it really changed the energy and the atmosphere in the theatre. The same child cast I hadn’t been particularly impressed with were so much stronger and energetic and every cast member on stage fed off the audience’s enthusiasm. It’s amazing how much the audience’s interaction and attitude can influence a performance (for better or worse). Our seats for this show were also better. Although billed as restricted view I could see 90% of the stage and we were only 3 rows back with no seats in front of us. Those seats had been removed to allow for the stairs to the stage that the performers enter and exit by so we got a very good view of James Millar as the trunch during the Bruce scene where he pauses to declare chokey as the second part of the punishment. I could have literally reached out and touched him (I didn’t of course in case you were wondering). From the moment Eva rose from below the table in Miracle I had a sense that the performance was going to be strong. There was just something about the way she carried herself and she had such a determined look in her eyes. Right from the outset it was clear that there was no vulnerability to her Matilda and neither Eva, nor her Matilda lacked any confidence. A few things about her Matilda became apparent in the first couple of scenes and it made me incredibly excited to see what she’d do next. - Her British accent was effortless and flawless. I very much enjoy the sound of this accent and I’m so glad the Australian production decided to teach it to the girls however it doesn’t come naturally to all the Matildas and it can sometimes be distracting when it’s obvious they’re concentrating so hard on not dropping the accent. It’s such a big ask and I find it so impressive that they’re able to do it at all. Eva’s accent was so natural that it enhanced the performance for me instead of detracting from it. - She was very responsive and reactive to everything that was going on around her. Even when she wasn’t the main focus of a scene there was not one minute on stage that she wasn’t completely present as Matilda. This made her Matilda incredibly easy to relate to. - Her face and eyes are incredibly expressive and her ability to show exactly what she’s feeling through facial expressions and actions is the best I’ve ever seen. It was difficult to take my eyes off her because I felt so invested in her story and how she was feeling. - Her line delivery, timing and the choices she made in portraying Matilda were incredibly well thought-out, considered and natural. I also found some of her choices unique to her which is always interesting. No line was ever rushed, felt contrary to her chosen portrayal or mumbled and as such nothing felt out of place or false. It was very easy to follow the story in this performance. Ok so now to all the details. So many line deliveries and choices were unique from what I’ve seen so far, and in my opinion, perfect that I almost want to describe the entire show. Her Matilda was angry. At the beginning of the first act it was very subtle, bubbling below the surface and only noticeable in small expressions and the intonation and tone of some lines. By the beginning of the second act it was more pronounced, but never exaggerated or over the top, shown in a few clenched fists, a clenched jaw, and some very scathing and pointed looks. This built very strongly and cleverly right up until The Smell of Rebellion where you could see the anger written all over her face and it just boiled over into “big, fat bully” and “Quiet” when she just couldn’t control it anymore. Every Matilda I’ve seen has practically shouted/yelled/declared indignantly the “I’m a girl” lines. Eva instead very firmly and evenly states “I’m a girl”, giving the impression that she’s said it so many times in her life that she’s simply resigned herself to the fact that her father is never going to acknowledge that she’s a girl. There’s also a very subtle hint of anger and frustration in her voice about this. Naughty- the part on the shelf was the strongest I’ve seen largely due to her facial expressions. Her ninja moves were also very sharp and strong which is something that fits my personal preferences. The only thing that could even remotely be considered a mistake on her part happened during the first library scene. There was a slight hesitation from what I imagine was a lapse in memory but she ad-libbed so quickly, and resumed the correct dialogue so seamlessly that I would have had no idea if I wasn’t so familiar with the show. When I spoke to my mum about it during intermission she had no idea what I was talking about. In the scene at the Wormwood house, where Mr Wormwood tears up the library book, Eva’s facial expressions and acting choices were so good. Instead of just sitting silently she chooses to open her mouth to appear as if she is about to talk back to her father but she gets silenced when he rips the book from her hands. She then goes from looking shocked and appalled, to looking downright incredulous when her father acts like an idiot (especially when he slams his face against it and shakes it in his mouth) and can’t even work out how to ruin the book. Rachel Cole’s more child-like Mrs Phelps really complemented Eva’s Matilda who seemed like the adult in all of their scenes together. She was so enthralled and enthusiastic about the stories. Eva’s stories were inspired- her intonation, tone, volume and facial expressions changed so appropriately that you couldn’t help but be sucked in by them. Quite a few of the other Matildas I’ve seen have been caught up with the accent, a bit rushed/mumbled or seem to be concentrating so hard on remembering the words and accompanying actions that it’s hard to stay in the moment. With Eva I couldn’t wait for the next part they were so expressive and engaging. Her reactions to Mrs Phelps’ interjections and interruptions were also played differently from what I’ve seen before. Her “I don’t know, not yet anyway” was quite drawn out with a slow and considered “I don’t know” like she was surprised by that and a 2-3 second pause before the “not yet anyway”. You could see her really trying to think about it and work out what might come next, like she was just as interested to know as Mrs Phelps, but she just didn’t have anymore. It felt very realistic. And all of her exit lines “Bye Mrs Phelps see you tomorrow!”, “yeah I’d better go” were also delivered differently. They’re often played for laughs but Eva’s deliveries were very serious. You got the sense she was very much trying not to burden Mrs Phelps with the reality of her situation. There was also a heartbreaking hint of sadness, especially after Mrs Phelps declares it “must be nice for a child to be so wanted”. She held her face and tone even (with slight forced positivity) during her “Yes, wonderful. Goodbye Mrs Phelps” but after she’d turned around her face dropped, her shoulders dropped and there was deep sadness in her eyes. I felt like crying. You could just see the weight of the effort for such a little girl to be so strong all the time against all the bullies in her life. Her delivery of “Mrs Phelps, It’s just a story” was also quite unusual. Mostly I’ve seen Matilda appear quite incredulous that Mrs Phelps could think it was real, or it’s played for laughs. Eva didn’t do either of these things. Instead she calmly and slowly said, “Mrs Phelps?” with a questioning intonation. It came across as very concerned, trying to make sure she was back in the present moment, and led into a reassuring “it’s just a story”. She spoke to Mrs Phelps in a very similar manner to how a mother might speak to a frightened child. It was interesting and quite effective given Rachel Cole’s Mrs Phelps. It might not have felt so believable with Cle Morgan’s portrayal but I obviously haven’t seen this and I wouldn’t be surprised if she adapted her delivery to suit. In the playground scene when Lavender introduces herself you can see she’s very confused and not quite sure how to take such a happy, bouncy, outgoing child. You can practically see her thinking “Who is this kid and why is she talking to me?” She starts to soften after Lavender declares her her best friend after the success of the narcolepsy scene. Another thing I really liked was her reaction just before the “biggest hug in the world”. Often I find that after Miss Honey explains her plans for the selection of books to challenge Matilda’s mind there’s just an uncomfortably long pause. While I know what’s supposed to be happening in Matilda’s head it’s mostly not very clear and the pause seems to stretch out too long. Eva’s eyes, however, initially showed some confusion- it was obvious she wasn’t used to such kindness and didn’t really know what to do. Her expression then changed very slightly, it was almost a twitch, and I don’t really know how to describe it… gratitude perhaps… and then she launched herself into Miss Honey. She managed to convey in this performance what has been lacking in most others I’ve seen. Now I should probably also mention Exodus Lale as Bruce at this point because he matched Eva in his strength in this performance. They are an incredible pair together. His Bruce is very funny and his timing and expression in the Bruce monologue was great. He also did something I’ve never seen before. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve always sat straight on to the stage and haven’t been able to see it but just after he’s sat in front of the cake he looked around the classroom and mouthed “help me” with an incredibly desperate/pleading expression to a few of the other kids. I thought it was funny and very clever. His delivery of “thank you” after the Trunch appears to be letting him off the hook was also different- very incredulous but obviously relieved. Overall the strongest Bruce performance I’ve seen and I was overall very impressed with the two Brisbane Bruces I saw! Ok I promise I’m up to the last few points. Eva’s quiet is one of my favourite renditions I’ve ever heard and certainly one of the best 2 I’ve heard live. The first part of the song is incredibly strong and angry, her face, her voice and her hands/arms (forced trembling) all show how much she’s struggling to contain it and her articulation of all of the words is very clear and controlled. All of this anger builds up to a very strong, clear and controlled belt. The second part of the song is strong but incredibly smooth and beautifully sung. It seems effortless. I wish I could listen to it over and over. Her delivery of the “Am I strange?” line was also very unique. It was delivered fairly slowly with the “strange” spoken very softly, almost whispered. It gave me the impression that she was a little bit in awe of her powers and slightly scared of the way her overwhelming anger had manifested. It led to the next exchange with Miss Honey being quite sweet and you could see how much they cared about each other. It became quite a powerful scene for their relationship and fed very nicely into what is the most interesting My House scene I’ve witnessed. You can just see everything Eva’s thinking and the lines are so well timed with her taking in her surroundings and also processing what Miss Honey is telling her. You can practically see the moment she understands how Miss Honey sees her small, modest house as her sanctuary. She’s also very focused on Miss Honey during the actual song when they’re sitting side by side… there’s no wandering eyes or moments with no expression on her face. The “but she’s got everything that’s yours” is almost pleading as if she knows Miss Honey is going to be averse to doing anything about it. She’s practically looking into Miss Honey’s eyes, trying to read her and understand her, for quite a bit of the song. As a result the two characters interact quite a bit more and I felt more of a connection between the two in this scene than I have before. During the whole show she only made three choices that didn’t really appeal to my preferences. I felt she emphasised the “shiny, white scarf” a bit too hard in the first part of the story. It was very slow with a pause between each word. She did turn to Mrs Phelps and look her directly in the eyes at the time- almost as if to make sure she didn’t miss what ends up being a key part but I would have preferred it to be more subtle. She also played the “could have heard a fly burp” for laughs a little bit which just isn’t my preference. I like the line delivered seriously as If she doesn’t realise that her story could maybe be funny. She also exaggerated the “That was badgers, it was a program about badgeeerrrrrsssssss” line and drew out the last badgers quite long. Marika Aubrey’s adapted response of “same thiiinnnggggggggg” with the same drawn out delivery and tone almost makes me like it. And Eva’s expression of sheer disbelief when her mother days “Russians are nocturnal you know” was just priceless. Well you’ve made it to the end. I think you can see how much I enjoyed the performance and my mum was completely blown away. She couldn’t stop talking about how amazing Eva was and she doesn’t believe the show could ever be done any better than that. Regardless of personal preferences her performance is so strong, and so totally present that you can’t help but appreciate her brilliant performance. She’s truly incredible. It was also lovely in bows to see her smile after seeing only negative emotions during the show. The whole crowd also loved the performance and rose to their feet for a standing ovation but it happened while they were turned to acknowledge he orchestra so she did this delightful little bounce and giggle when she turned back around to find everyone on their feet. She practically skipped off stage in joy. Every single performer on stage for this performance was absolutely on the top of their game. So if anyone is lucky enough to see Eva as Matilda be prepared for a phenomenal, and emotional, show.

Storytelling Structure in Project-Based Learning
youtube
In this video, I talk about a storytelling structure that can help your students communicate their creative ideas and solutions through a narrative that motivates and inspires their audience. This storytelling structure is especially useful for project-based learning experiences. The video shows how Chris Smith and I taught this storytelling structure to the students of Canberra Primary School in Singapore.
