It’s well-traveled (backpackers have been following “the banana pancake trail” since the late ’60s), and there’s an extensive network designed to ensure that you can easily get from A to B.

In Hanoi and need to get to Bangkok? In Vientiane and want to go Malaysia? Or Ko Samui? No problem. Someone can arrange that.

This is the quickest but most expensive way to get around Southeast Asia. There are a lot of budget airlines (like Ryanair or EasyJet in Europe) in the region: Scoot (merged with Tigerair), Jetstar, and AirAsia are the biggest. Nok Air has a lot of flights within Thailand, and VietJet Air is popular in Vietnam. Lion Air serves Indonesia, but its safety record is really spotty and I would not fly them.

Here are some sample prices for some of the biggest routes:

Bangkok to Singapore – $55 (one way), $120 (round-trip)

Phuket City to Vientiane – $95 (one way), $180 (round-trip)

Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok – $48 (one way), $108 (round-trip)

If you book early, you can save on fares, as most of the airlines offer deeply discounted fare sales all the time, especially Air Asia. The best places to find cheap flights are Momondo and Skyscanner.

Keep in mind two things, though:

First, budget airlines all fly from smaller, more out-of-the-way airports, so be prepared to take buses or taxis there (and plan for traffic).

Second, all these airlines make their money by charging fees for everything, so expect baggage fees, credit card “convenience” fees, check-in fees, fees on fees, etc., etc.! If the fees add up, it can often be cheaper to fly one of the larger, more traditional air carriers, especially when you consider the main airport might be more centrally located.

All in all, I only recommend flying if you are pressed for time or find a super cheap deal.

Get Around Southeast Asia By Local or Tourist Bus

The easiest and cheapest way to travel around Southeast Asia is by bus. Buses will take you anywhere you want to go, no matter how far.

Buses are generally run by a plethora of small operators (there is no version of Greyhound here). You simply go with the operator that services the route you want to travel or with the company the tourist agency or guesthouse set you up with.

In Southeast Asia, you don’t have to plan ahead that much either. You simply show up at the bus station and buy your ticket! They use a first-come, first-serve basis but are rarely full. You don’t need to book them in advance or online — although, if I know where I’m going, I often book my bus the day before simply as a precaution. In all my years traveling this region, I’ve never shown up and been turned away.

Here are some sample fares and travel times for bus routes in Southeast Asia (in USD):

Bangkok to Chiang Mai – $17 (10 hours)

Bangkok to Pattaya – $4.75 (3 hours)

Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai – $7.17 (3:40 hrs)

Moreover, the backpacker trail in Southeast Asia is so well established that there is a very well-oiled “tourist bus” system here. (Usually, when you book buses from tourist agencies or guesthouses, they put you on these tourist buses.) These buses will pick you up at your accommodation or have a set meetup point in the tourist area and take you directly to your next destination.

For example, if you need to go from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, you’d buy a ticket, meet the bus (probably on Khao San Road), and enjoy the night ride up to Chiang Mai with other travelers. No stops at other bus stations — just a straight shot to Chiang Mai.

And while tourist buses are very convenient, they are also usually about 25% more expensive than the buses locals use. They generally cost $5-8 USD for a 5-6-hour journey; overnight buses are $22 USD or more depending on distance.

Get Around Southeast Asia By Backpacker Bus

There are two organized backpacker specific bus companies that serve Asia: Bamba Experience and Stray Asia. These are hop-on-hop-off buses that travel set routes across the continent.

Bamba Experience’s flexible passes start at around $600 USD for 15 days. Stray Asia’s pass is about $1,836 for a minimum of 40 days.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of these services. You’re paying for flexibility, but it’s easy to get around the region as well as meet people, so I would skip this method of travel. Even if you’re a first-time traveler, the tourist buses can do everything these tours can do for you.

Get Around Southeast Asia By Train

Train service in Southeast Asia is basically nonexistent other than in Thailand, the only country that has an extensive train system around the country (and onward to Singapore), and Vietnam, which has a train along the coast, though it is slow and expensive compared to the bus (1,445,445 VND/$62 USD from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City instead of 695,865 VND/$30 USD).

Train prices are determined by distance and class, so the farther you go, the more you pay. Night trains with sleeper cars are more expensive than day trains: the night train to Chiang Mai from Bangkok takes 12 hours and costs 965 THB ($29 USD) for a sleeper seat, but that same train during the day is 230 THB ($7 USD).

You can travel by train between Singapore, Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Bangkok as well. It’s a long journey that will take you over a day to get there, but you can find fares for as little as $80 USD. If you’re a train enthusiast, it’s one of the most classic rides out there. If you have the time, I highly recommend the experience.

Myanmar has train service but it’s very limited. There is no website for Myanmar Railways, but the ministry of rail transportation has a schedule (don’t depend on this though — you’re better off finding out exact times at a station). You can also use 12go.asia to look up routes and buy tickets. There are trains every day between Yangon and Mandalay, with stops in Bago, Taungoo, Naypyitaw, and Thazi. This entire 15-hour route costs about 4,600 K ($3 USD) for an ordinary seat and 12,750 K ($8 USD) for sleeper class. There are a handful of other routes as well, like Yangon to Inglee Lake via Thazi.

In Indonesia, the main cities of Java (Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Probolinggo (for Mount Bromo), and Banyuwangi (the ferry terminal for Bali)) are well linked by train, including. Economy class to Jakarta to Surabaya takes 15 hours and costs about 104,000 IDR ($7 USD), while a 9-hour executive-class trip can cost up to 1,250,000 IDR ($90 USD). Surabaya to Probolinggo (for Mount Bromo) takes 2-3 hours and costs 29,000 IDR ($2 USD) for economy or 150,000 IDR ($11 USD) for executive class. I don’t recommend renting a car. Rental cars are expensive and the roads here are nuts. I would never drive around the region.

Get Around Southeast Asia By Boat/Ferry

While this won’t be your main way of getting around, it will definitely come into play in certain countries. If you’re exploring the islands of Thailand, for example, you’ll need to rely on boats and ferries. And if you’re backpacking around Indonesia or the Philippines, ferries will be the cheapest way to island-hop (but definitely not the fastest!).

It’s worth noting that ferries in Southeast Asia don’t often adhere to Western safety standards and lack of life jackets is an issue. Some people recommend staying on the top deck so it’s easier to quickly leave the boat if necessary.

While it’s not necessary to book in advance, it’s a good idea during peak season or on more popular routes to book your tickets the day before you plan to travel to make sure you have a spot. You can buy tickets on the ferry company’s website or via a ticket agent like 12go.asia. However, every agent or hostel or hotel can get you a ferry ticket too. It’s really simple!

Here are a few sample routes and prices to help you plan:

Bali (Padang Bai) to Lombok – $5 (one way)

Bali to the Gili Islands – $30 (one way)

Koh Tao to Koh Samui – $16 (one way)

Sihanoukville to Koh Rong – $25 (round-trip)

Manilla to Puerto Princesa – $30 (one way)

You might also consider doing a multiday cruise on popular waterways like the Mekong River or Halong Bay. On the Mekong River in Laos, slow boats from Huay-Xai will drop you off in Luang Prabang. Slow boats take 2-3 days, stopping at guesthouses for nightly accommodation. Prices will vary depending on the quality of your tour company, but a decent tour will run you around 1,000,000 LAK ($116 USD).

Halong Bay tours from Hanoi start around 850,000-1,403,377 VND ($35-60 USD) for two-day trips and increase exponentially from there.

Getting Around Towns on the Cheap

Local buses are really your best and cheapest option when you’re traveling in town as well. Fares typically cost less than $1 (and even less if you buy multi-trip passes). All of the towns you’ll visit will have reliable, affordable public bus systems.

In some of the bigger cities (Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur), you’ll even find subways and tram systems. Jakarta and Hanoi are working on building their subway systems, but buses are still the best option in those places for now.

I normally advise budget travelers to skip taxis because they are way too expensive. But in Southeast Asia, you don’t have to always stick to this rule. Taxis and tuk-tuks (small shared taxis with no meters) are options here. They require a bit of haggling and cost more than public transportation, but they are clearly more convenient when you’re in a jam or not yet accustomed to an area.

In Singapore and Indonesia, taxi drivers do put on the meter. In Bangkok, you can get taxi drivers to use the meter, but if you’re hailing one in a tourist area, he might try to avoid using it. In Vietnam, the meter is usually rigged, but if you use a reputable company like Mai Linh, you won’t have any problems.

Grab (an Uber offspring) is a household name in Southeast Asia. It, too, is convenient, but it sometimes costs even more than a taxi. Gojek in Indonesia is a similar option. Be forewarned: If you order a Grab or Gojek, you might wind up on the back of a motorbike!

How to travel between islands

You will be doing some island hopping in Indonesia. Flights between the major islands can be reserved for cheap in advance. Therefore, Indonesia is one place where some advance planning is necessary to keep the costs down.

Unless of course, you plan to take the Pelni ships. Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Persero) is national shipping companies that provide sea transportation service to travelers looking to travel between islands. Pelni ships are cheap, comfortable, and a very authentic way to experience Indonesia life and culture. They are a good alternative to flying. Of course, they take a lot longer than jets. You can book online or at the port. Sometimes the ferry tickets for popular routes are sold out. So, it helps to check in advance.

How to travel within an island

Finding reliable public transportation on different islands is quite a challenge. If you plan to return to the origin then renting a scooter or car is the best way to explore and experience the islands. Of course, you should be comfortable riding a scooter and/or driving a car in Indonesia. If you have past experience of riding/driving in South or South-East Asia you should be okay.

Here are different rental options:

Scooter/Motorcycle Rental: Ideal for solo travelers with limited luggage. Cheapest way to explore an island costing about 80,000 IDR (US$ 6/ INR 400) per day + fuel,

Self Drive Car Rental: Ideal for two to four Travelers. Car rentals start at about 250,000 IDR (US$ 19/ INR 1200) per day + fuel for hatchbacks and Toyota or Suzuki SUVs,

Car Rental with Driver: If you are not comfortable driving then you can hire a car with a driver. It will cost you approximately 1,500,000 IDR (US$ 112/ INR 7,000) per day including fuel and driver charges

If you are more than two people then renting a car will cost you more or less the same as a bus. Albeit, buses are infrequent and take longer. Although, buses were my preferred choice when doing an overnight journey. Reserving a bus online is difficult, nigh non-existence. In most cases, you will have to go to the bus station to reserve bus tickets.

How to travel within a city or town

Local ridesharing options such as Grab and Go-Jek are the cheapest way to get around a city. Uber also exists but is slightly pricier. Downloading and setting up an account is straight forward for both Grab and Go-Jek. The process to book a ride is the same as other ridesharing apps. You can pay in cash so you don’t need a credit or debit card to register. Both Grab and Go-Jek have motorcycle ride options which are cheaper than cars, ideal for solo travelers.

Rather than a traditional two-week itinerary, I will give you a one-week itinerary for each of the four islands I visited namely – Bali, Java, Flores, and Sulawesi. Any two of the four islands can be visited with each other on a two-week travel of Indonesia. Therefore you can combine these individual itineraries and create your own two-week itinerary for Indonesia.

One Week Bali Itinerary

Bratan Temple, Bali Indonesia

Bali is the prime tourist destination of Indonesia. And, it’s the first place that comes to many people’s mind when you say ‘Indonesia’. It deserves the title with numerous turquoise beaches, ancient Balinese Hindu temples, green and gold rice fields, and a tranquil vibe emanating from smiling faces of friendly locals. Being the tourist capital of Indonesia, it feels a bit too crowded. But, it is well worth your time since you won’t get to see 1000-year old picturesque Balinese Hindu temples elsewhere in the world. And, this is coming from an Indian who has seen his fair share of temples.

4 Day Sulawesi Itinerary

The highlands of Sulawesi harbor houses built in the shape of boats. One Game of Thrones phrase that comes to mind is ‘What is dead may never die’. Yes, the dead refuse to go away. They are housed, cared, and fed for at least a year after they have taken their last breath. The burial ceremonies celebrate the dead and the afterlife. The burial sites and post burial rituals are awestruck. Toraja culture of the Sulawesi highlands is a Pandora’s Box for a culture vulture.

The ancient Torajan burial ceremonies take place from June to August. Although there are smaller ceremonies year round, June to August is the best time to visit if you want to witness the elaborate burial ceremonies.

I know you have mastered many places in Bali. Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Ubud, and Canggu are most familiar places that you’ve known to the very heart.

But have you heard about the less touristy area of Jemeluk Bay, located in Amed area? Amed, lies on the northeastern tip of Bali, refers to a long stretch of coast running from the village of Culik about 14 km eastwards incorporating the seven villages of Amed, Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah, Selang, Banyuning and Aas.

How to reach Jemeluk?

Jemeluk Bay is 3 hours drive from Ngurah Rai Airport. The taxi will cost you around 450.000 rupiah and if you rent a car with a driver, it will cost you 500.000 rupiah for one way.

There are not so many options for accommodation at Jemeluk Bay. You can choose whether you want to stay at homestays with the locals, or in villas. The price ranges from 100.000–1.200.000 rupiah per night.

You can also go for a daytrip to Jemeluk. Rent a motorbike for 50.000 rupiah per day and you are ready to go.

Fun things to do at Jemeluk Bay

Jump into the sea for snorkeling and diving

Jemeluk Bay is a snorkeling & diving area. There are many diving operator at Jemeluk, and it’s also the place of the famous Apnea Bali Freediving Education. As for snorkeling, you can rent the snorkeling gear at the entrance of the beach for cheap price, or you can go to the restaurants where you can eat and put your things and they provide snorkeling gear for free.

Snorkeling at Jemeluk Beach is good in the morning for better visibility. The corals garden stretch all around Jemeluk Bay and it’s full of various types of fishes. I saw many puffer fishes, boxfishes, many parrotfishes, napoleons, and sea stars, trumpet fishes, school of mackerel tuna, sea urchins, and sea fan anemone. I was lucky to see a crocodile long tom fish (it looks similar like barracuda) and some dolphins pass by in the afternoon.

Sweet treat with banana pancake

After snorkeling, you can rest for lunch at the restaurants along Jemeluk Bay. The food and drinks are cheap and good. I love the banana pancake with honey and chicken noodle soup. For recommendation, I would suggest Sama Sama Restaurant & Café. The food is good and cheap. Caution: if you’re not into very sweet drinks, ask for any drinks without sugar and you can add by yourself later!

If you stay at Jemeluk Bay, ask for the homestay restaurant to find you catch of the day mahi-mahi fish. Grilled fresh mahi-mahi is the best food that I have ever tasted during my time at Jemeluk Bay.

Chasing the sunset at Sunset Point Cafe

You can go to Sunset Point Café in the afternoon. It rests on the top of the hill at the edge of Jemeluk Bay and has a view of the bay and Mount Agung. It’s a perfect spot to capture sunset with Mount Agung as background.

Dive into the shipwreck of USAT Liberty at Tulamben

On other day, rent a motorbike and head up to Tulamben in the morning, another famous site for snorkeling and diving. The famous USAT Liberty shipwreck lying below the sea just about 200 meters from Tulamben beach.

The USAT Liberty shipwreck is famous for a place to see sturgeon fishes, turtles, and many coral fishes. I was lucky to see some cod fishes when I went there last time for snorkeling.

You can choose whether you want to go diving or snorkeling in Tulamben. The diving gear rental & guide is around 700.000 rupiah and the snorkeling gear rental is 100.000 rupiah. It’s more pricey due to Tulamben is more touristy than Amed. Good tips for you who want to go snorkel, be at Tulamben in the morning before the divers come and blocking your visibility with their breathing bubbles.

Hike the Lempuyang Temple

When you’re done with all of the sea activities, you can visit Lempuyang Temple, which only a few kilometers from Amed. Lempuyang Temple, also known as The Temple of Thousands Steps, is located at 1.058 meters above sea levels and you have to climb 1700 stairs to get to the main temple. So don’t forget to bring your hiking shoes.

Find peace at Tirtagangga Water Palace

Tirtagangga Water Palace is 17 km from Jemeluk and it’s a complex of palace surrounded with waterways. It’s well maintained and really beautiful. The sounds of the water will sooth you and if you stay longer, you will find peace just by listening to the sound of the water.

There are no restrictions on how you have to dress to visit the palace. However, you have to respect the complex by not making noise while you are there.

You will definitely have a good time at Jemeluk. The main concern of the area is the preservation of the corals life at Jemeluk Bay. Most of the restaurants at Jemeluk Bay don’t recommend the use of fin in order not to destroy the corals. And it is extremely recommended not to stand or touch the corals.

So, what are you waiting for? Packed up your bikinis and swimming trunks, bring your underwater camera and head out to Jemeluk Bay now!

Exploring Indonesia: A Budget Traveler’s Ultimate Dream Vacation

I’m sure you’ve all probably heard of Bali, Indonesia; perhaps through the movie Eat Pray Love. But did you know that Bali is just one of over 17,000 islands in Indonesia; the fourth most populous country in the world and has over 300 spoken languages? So theoretically if you tried to see a new island every day, it would take roughly 50 years to physically visit every single island. Indonesia boasts magnificent temples, stunning active volcanoes, idyllic stretches of beach, the fearsome Komodo dragon, and even the orangutan. It has vast and varying cultures, delicious cuisine, and some of the friendliest, most accommodating people in the world. Feeling like an adventure yet? In this article, I will cover some of the more popular islands in Indonesia, top attractions, and some of my personal favorites. You’ll quickly see why I continue to return time and time again to this stunning country.

  Bali, Indonesia 

    Bali will always hold a special place in my heart. I recently spent two months in Canggu, Bali, working and exploring the beautiful island. The Balinese are incredibly friendly people, who are quick to invite you in and make you feel welcomed. Bali is predominately a Hindu island, where shrines are attached to every building, house, and restaurant; offerings are something you will inevitably step on as you enter in to get a massage or bite to eat.

  Kuta

Kuta is one of the most popular area’s of Bali, full of tourists, backpackers, and party goers. There are endless souvenir stands, massage shops, scooter rentals, restaurants, bars, and clubs. You’ll be at no shortage of entertainment here, and if you like to party, then the nightlife is booming. For less than $10 you can get dinner and unlimited drinks at one of the most iconic bars in Kuta: Sky Bar. I personally try to stay away from Kuta, and instead make my way north to Ubud!

    Ubud

Ubud is a yogi’s paradise. This laid back town is full of people looking to practice yoga, meditation and really anything that will get them closer to a spiritual awakening. Enjoy an array of local and western food; heavy on the healthy, organic, vegan side. Travel to monkey forest, where for about $3 you can feed a monkey, and even hold one if they’ll let you! Take a coffee tour, to discover how coffee is made, along with a free coffee and tea tasting of over 10 different flavors. Try the Luwak coffee: coffee sourced from the poop of the Luwak animal, it is considered the most expensive coffee in the world. Don’t be deterred by how it is produced; Luwak coffee is one of the best coffees you’ll ever taste.

    Mt. Batur

If you’ve ever wanted to climb an active volcano, now is your chance! Mt. Batur is one of the most popular active volcanoes to hike in Indonesia, and don’t worry, the last eruption was in 2000, so you should be fine for a few more thousand years. The best time to go is for the sunrise. You leave around 4 am in the morning, and the hike takes approximately two hours. Challenging as it may be, the view from the stop will make it all worth it. After you descend back down, grab a beer at one of the many natural hot springs next to Lake Danau Batur and take in the view around you.

    Java, Indonesia 

    By far my favorite island in Indonesia, Java is an island very near it’s neighbor, Bali. Predominately a Muslim island, (as is the majority of Indonesia) you will definitely have to dress a bit more modestly here. Still, the people are just as friendly, and the landscape and various temples are breathtaking.

  Kawah Ijen

Don’t miss this volcano! It has yet to make it into Lonely Planet, although I have no idea why. It is one of the most unique experiences in all of Indonesia. What makes this active volcano so different to the others? The blue fire. Kawah Ijen, or “Gunung Merapi” meaning mountain of fire, is a sulfuric crater volcano. You have to make this hike to the peak during the middle of the night, so you can fully experience the electric blue flame of Kawah Ijen.

    Gunung Bromo

One of the most famous and most frequently visited volcanoes in Java is Bromo. Yet another active volcano, Bromo is just one of three volcanoes located in the mountain town of Cemoro Lawang. Bring a jacket and some long pants if you want to hike this volcano- with an altitude of 656 feet above sea level, Bromo is a bit cooler compared to the stifling heat experienced in much of Indonesia.

    Borobudur

Located in central Java, Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple not only in Indonesia but the world. Built in the 9th century during the Sailendra Dynasty, Borobudur is created with the intention of attaining Nirvana. As you climb the steep steps to the top, you are forced to look down, so as not to trip. This is an intentional design, with the intention of creating a sense of prayer to Buddha by those who make the climb to the top. Take a photo with one of the over 500 Buddha statues, and explore the many levels of this stunning temple.

    Komodo Island, Indonesia 

    For all you dinosaur fans out there, Komodo Island is just the place to get your Jurassic Park fix. Home to the prehistoric man-eating komodo dragon, Komodo island is accessible by boat, but don’t let this deter you; this small island in Indonesia is a must see.

    The Komodo Dragon

Of course many flock here to witness firsthand the fearsome komodo dragon. The dragon, or monitor lizard, is the largest lizard in the world, growing up to 10 feet in length! A carnivorous reptile, the dragon feeds predominately on deer but will attack any animal that wanders into its path if it is hungry enough. Although generally a very sedentary animal, these dragon’s have been known to attack and even kill humans. But you’ll be completely fine as long as you stay smart, and travel with a guide or with a group of people.

    Pink Beach

Komodo island is home to one of the only pink sand beaches in the world. The pink sand comes from the microscopics animals called Foraminifera, which produce a red pigment. This pigment is found on local coral reefs, and as it breaks off, the red color mixes with the white sand and voila! Take a dip in the crystal clear turquoise waters and enjoy the picturesque landscape surrounding you.

    Gili Islands, Indonesia 

    The Gili Island’s are a set of three small desert islands located off the coast of Bali. These island’s don’t permit any scooters, and certainly no cars; the main modes of transportation are bicycles, or Cidoos (horse and cart). These islands are the perfect place to relax, unwind, grab a pina colada and enjoy some time in paradise.

    Gili Trawangan (Gili T)

This is the largest of the three islands, although you can walk around the entire island in around two hours. By day enjoy snorkeling along the white sandy beaches, or even try your hand at scuba diving. By night get ready to party! Gili T is full of bars, with a different event on every night of the week. Buckets are a popular choice of drink here, consisting of liquor and mixers, but drink slowly; they are stronger than you think!

    Gili Meno

This is the perfect romantic couples retreat. Gili Meno, the smallest of the three islands, is truly a picture perfect honeymooners destination, but be aware that it really is full of lovestruck couples. If you are traveling as a couple, or in a group then I would recommend this island for its white sandy beaches, clear waters and excellent snorkeling. However, if you’re traveling alone then perhaps it is a destination to visit another time.

Last but not least, Gili Air is a bit of a mix of the other two Gili islands. There are places to party at night, but in general, it has a much more chilled out, hippy vibe. During the day grab some snorkeling gear and hit the water, bask in the sun with a cold Bintang beer, or explore the tiny island. By night head to a beachside restaurant for some fresh seafood and relax at one of the bars with all the new friends you’re bound to meet here.
