Arrival & First Thoughts

Hi everyone! My name is Lydia Frasz and I’m spending 6 weeks in Buenos Aires, Argentina this summer and taking the equivalent of Physics 240 at ITBA (the Institute of Technology Buenos Aires) and Culture and Civilization of Argentina through CEA. While my goal was to post a blog every week, two weeks have passed since I’ve arrived; and even though time moves slow here, between settling in, class work, and traveling, I’ve been busy. Because of this, I’m going to be posting every 4 to 5 days, so stay posted, and don’t hesitate to comment or ask any questions you may have.

Before I start telling you about my travels, I thought that I could share a little bit about myself and what helped guide me in choosing Engineering: IPE in Buenos Aires. (1) I love traveling, and after visiting Panama my sophomore year of high school with my Spanish class, I knew that I wanted to come back to South America. (2) The program worked perfectly with my schedule. I waitress over the summer, and that income is really important for me, so being able to spend a lot of time, (6 weeks), in a foreign country and still be able to work for the remainder of the summer, (all of July and August), was perfect. (3) The courses. As a Chemical Engineer, and as the case for all engineers, the course load is heavy. In BA, (abbreviation for Buenos Aires that I’m starting to use, like the locals), I’m taking Physics 2 (240) and a culture class. Some things that I’ve loved so far about taking these classes here include covering credits, taking a class that counts towards the International Minor for Engineers, (I hope to declare in the fall), and living with my classmates. The last one sounds similar to living in dorms and being able to find study groups, but I’ve found that having the same exact schedule as my roommate makes such a big difference. She helps me wake up in the morning, (class starts at 8am), we’re both tired and hungry around the same time, and we do our homework together! Plus, I live in an apartment with 7 other students who have the same schedule, so it’s even more impactful.

Okay, arrival, Buenos Aires and the essentials. I live in an apartment in a neighborhood of Buenos Aires called Palermo; it’s really nice. The building has 7 other students who are in the same program as me, plus 2 other students who are also taking classes at CEA but are from different universities and have different majors. The other students here are in a mixture of homestays and apartments throughout the city, (fun fact, Buenos Aires is a city and province), but not too far away.

For food, we eat out A LOT, and then also cook sometimes; everything is super cheap because the economy in Buenos Aires is suffering right now and has a very high inflation rate.

Before I go, I wanted to share a few of my favorite memories so far, and some things that I love about Argentina.

The people. I came into this program with very little knowledge of the people I would be meeting here, let alone living and spending all my time, and I can safely say I’ve made some of my closest friends. We spend a lot of time together, from shopping, to planning trips, (which is sometimes stressful), taking the Subte, (the subway system here), cooking meals, going out, and decompressing at the end of almost every day, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

And one thing that I love about Argentina, also the people. The environment here is very communal, from sharing Mate, (a tea that everyone drinks, more than water), sobremesa, (chatting with friends after you’ve finished dinner), and cheering for Messi, the people here are a community, and most are always willing to help or lend a hand when someone needs help.

Well, this is a lot, so I’ll be back in a few days to discuss my travels so far, and where I’m planning to go next.

Is It Okay To Buy Fast Fashion Secondhand?

When they began writing this piece they had my personal opinion and conclusion to this article all ready to go. They have attended many clothing swaps in the past few years and become annoyed with ones which ban fast fashion items from participating.

They have consistently thought that the excess of clothing in world is too great not to take advantage of every secondhand piece available.

“They are shopping more than ever and they are discarding more than ever. So, is it okay to buy someone’s used fast fashion?”

But as they dove deeper, they realized that the answer requires a little more context. There are currently living in an unprecedented moment in fashion history. Fast fashion has taken over much of world and turned the need to clothe ourselves into a mindless sport.

There are shopping more than ever and they are discarding more than ever. So, is it okay to buy someone’s used fast fashion? Is it better than buying it straight from the retailer, or is it just perpetuating the consumption cycle? The conclusion, just like sustainability advisement in general, is far more complex than “yes” or “no”.

For this piece, they called on my whip-smart sustainable fashion friends to weigh in with their thoughts. Getting each of their varied perspectives was invaluable in coming to the realization that this topic is far from simple. Most of them agreed that they must use what they already have instead of constantly creating new.

Thrifting Is Accessible

Buying secondhand from famous thrift shops in Panama City Beach, FL gives people the opportunity to begin their journey into sustainable fashion—even if they don’t have the means to buy new consciously made options.

Thrifting is a cheap way to vote with your dollars and avoid giving to questionable corporations. Though the true benefit of buying secondhand is not necessarily the lowered price tag, but rather the ability to get unusual pieces without continuing to harm the planet.

Thrifting Expands Options

They have always been a fan of the outrageous when it comes to dressing. Though I’m much less experimental than they used to be, it’s so exciting to know that they could get my hands on a silver vinyl bag or spandex jumpsuit if the feeling struck.

The reality is that these fabrics and colors are just not feasible (yet) without the use of toxic chemicals, so being able to enjoy those trends which have come back in style, without creating new carbon footprints, is quite satisfying.

Buying secondhand keeps clothing from, or at least prolongs the process of, ending up in landfills.

Each year Americans throw away about 11 million tons of clothing and much of it ends up coming from excessive production of fast fashion companies. An alternative to this is to give to secondhand shops, in an attempt to keep these textiles alive a little longer.

But Is This Just Part Of A Wasteful Cycle?

The “resale market” has become a $20 billion dollar industry in its own right and has begun the transition to outpacing traditional fast fashion. This is wonderful news to those of us interested in changing the way that people consume, though it may be hiding the fact that it could be another form of mass consumption.

With the rise of organizational fads like the Marie Kondo method, individuals have been getting rid of their possessions left and right, leaving thrift shops with maybe more than they can manage.

Buying fast fashion secondhand may reduce the guilt they have for purchases, though it may not reduce overall impact.

Fast fashion is fast fashion and could fall apart eventually, leaving us wanting more, just like the customers who originally purchased them. Maggie Pa summed it up well when I called on my friends at Beyond The Label to give their expert opinions.

Maybe it’s not so black and white. It’s okay to buy fast fashion secondhand, though definitely wise not to completely fill your closet with it. It’s not just smart for the planet, and it’s smart for your wallet to employ moderation when it comes to these pieces so that you aren’t left spending constantly to replace the low-quality items.

Buying secondhand fast fashion can be a joyous way to try out new trends with low risk of feeding the consumer monster directly. There is so much clothing out there already that it would be a good idea for all of us to invest in more secondhand pieces.

It’s vital for us to expand the accessibility of this movement and avoid discouraging those new to ethical fashion from participating in any way they can. Sometimes casting the net wider means some people will be obtaining secondhand fast fashion.

However, it’s important not to forget that sustainable fashion is a growing movement for a reason, these low-quality pieces aren’t built to last, contain toxic chemicals, and were created in poor conditions. Secondhand fast fashion seems to be a means to an end because, in a perfect world, it wouldn’t even be a factor.

They maintain that it’s not a one-size fit all solution because in this emerging section of the industry there are still so many gray areas. they all crave concrete advice, but a shift to a more conscious lifestyle is mainly about taking the time to think through your purchases, actions, and the inevitable consequences.

Nothing in this world is without consequence and they are all just doing best to make sense of it all.

Day 111 - Bogata, Colombia

Welcome to the capital!

1. Night bus was the roughest sleep (or lack there of) that I've had this whole trip. The bus was cold which o expected but then windy roads, slightly awkward angled seat and pot holes I was up and down throughout. Still for cutting 3 hours out of the journey I'm still happy I did it. We arrived at the bus station at 6.15am and I got to the hostel at 6.45am. They were so nice when I checked in and actually let me go to the room straight away to sleep. I ended up sleeping straight till 11am. This was a good place to doze as only a few things I want to see in Bogata.

2. Once I woke I slowly got myself together. After being in 30+ degrees the last 8ish weeks, waking up to 15 degrees was a bit of a shock. I even broke out my jeans which I wore last in Xela, Guatemala. Around the corner from where I'm staying are two food areas. One is quick and cheap. The other is full course meals and still cheap but less cheap. I want to go on a tour which was starting in 30 minutes so I went to the comida rapida one (cheap and fast) and picked up what turned out to be a delicious slice of pizza. Chilling with the locals I sat on the side of the path with it and the wee plastic slat they give you.

3. I decided for the arvo it would be good to get an overview of the city. Either a walking or a bike tour and ultimately went with the bike tour as you cover more ground (get out of just the historical district and into more gritty areas of Bogata which wouldn't be safe for me on my own). The bike tour was good from a getting a workout perspective in as ended up riding for over 3 hours although I didn't learn all that much about Bogata. On the bike tour we made 4 stops, the first at the old commerce area, then the gold museum, then a park where we were given some local fruit juices and finally a wee restaurant where we had potato balls. The potato balls were fried and made from a particular potato type that only grows in Colombia. Through South America it's known as papas de Colombia (if I remember rightly). We also rode through the famous 7th Ave, some really good graffiti areas and the red light district (although couldn't tell apart from it looking sketchy as hell). Unfortunately the guides never slowed so apart from one photo of flags when we were at the lights I didnt get photos at all through the tour. While I could've slowed and taken a few, as I've come to expect in Colombia there was a significant amount of catcalling some slowing on my own in these areas didnt seem wise. Note to self,, dont have blonde hair here! One thing that was really cool was everyone did wear helmets here which I hadn't seen really through North Colombia. On top of this one time I saw a bike with a kid and adult with only one helmet and for once it was the child wearing the helmet. So many times I've seen 2 adults, 1 kid or an adult and 2 kids on bikes (motorbikes) and only the adults are wearing helmets or only the drivers. Overall the ride had good level of ups and downs so I was well worn out when it was over.

4. Back at the hostel I had a bite to eat and then changed before heading to a pub down the road. Timing worked well and Abi who I had been at Spanish school in Guatemala with was also in Bogata. The pub down the road ended up being an Irish one so not very Colombian but it was fun learning what each of us had been doing for the past 6 weeks (when I flew to Panama, Abi flew direct to Colombia). She also gave me a few tips for the coming couple of weeks in Colombia. Maybe this will stop me from faffing given I spent a significant amount of time in the north compared to most. Though the chill time in the sun was amazing ! Just like I will be doing in a few months Abi was also keen to offload the random travel stuff she no longer needed so I gained more sunblock and insect repellent. The repellant in particular is amazing so mine has gone walkabouts right now.

5. We headed to our respective hostels at about 9pm. Later on I felt peckish and was going to go to a shop around the corner. The receptionist told me I should probably leave my phone behind...I decided if she was that worried about my phone I was more worried about me and so no snacks for me other than those the hostel had going (chips). I chilled a while longer before heading to bed. This was actually one of my least favourite places I've stayed, it felt like everyone else lived in that dorm room long term! So I'm quite glad it was just one night and one morning nap I had there.

Thrift Like a Pro – Follow These 5 Easy Steps

Step 1: Understand your wardrobe and aesthetic before you go thrift shopping

What is your style? Take the time to look through your closet at each piece you own. What pieces do you not wear at all? What pieces do you regret buying? On the other hand, what pieces do you wear as often as possible? What pieces make you feel your best? When you have each piece designated in one of these categories (Pieces I don’t like vs Pieces I like), determine and write down what it is about each category that sets it apart. Get really specific about both, because once you determine what your style is, it will be easier to cleanse your closet of things that don’t serve your aesthetic, and it will also make shopping for new thrift finds easier for you.

Step 2: Make a list of things you want to add to your closet

Base what you want on things you already have – what can enhance your wardrobe? What are the things that you added to your like list that you could use more of? What are items that would compliment your like list. Do you have a lot of jeans but no tshirts or blouses? If so, your goal should be to make as many outfits out of those jeans you already own with a few new pieces – a button up blouse, a printed summery tank top, a vintage/retro blazer would make for several outfits once mixed and matched with your jeans.

Step 3: Get to know your local thrift stores

Understand their sales systems, when they put new stock on the racks, the best hours to go, etc. All of this comes from experience and frequenting the shops. You may learn that one store has more quality items than another, or one store has better prices and/or sales than another. Frequenting thrift stores will also keep you in the know of all of their sales, specials and offers. Very few thrift stores have an established online presence, so getting out and getting to know them is very beneficial. See if the thrift stores in your area have any social media accounts or email newsletters. If they do, follow them and sign up so that you can know about all of their latest news.

Step 4: Go to the thrift store – Explore every aisle

Now that you are finally at thrift shop in Panama City Beach, FL , let’s talk about HOW to shop.

First, shop on a day when you have a lot of time available so that you don’t feel rushed.

Next, it is ok to go to the aisles that you are most comfortable with, such as the dress aisle if you love dresses. Realize, though, that a thrift store layout and merchandise placement is usually of no exact science like a retail store. For this reason, I encourage you to EXPLORE EVERY AISLE.

When you explore aisles that you are not used to, look for prints and colors that you love. Grab those up and save them for the next step! You never know how they can come in handy! For example, and oversized men’s jogger sweater or a vintage women’s jogger sweater in a fun print could be really cute for your fall wardrobe. Open your mind as you explore every aisle – the opportunities to make your wardrobe really pop are endless.

Step 5: Try it on!

Yes, get in the dressing room (hopefully the store has one!) and test it out. Try it on, not only because you can’t return it, but because you really need to see if this piece is something you want to invest in. Does it fit well? Will it coordinate with multiple pieces in your existing closet? Does it make you feel awesome? Ask these questions while in the store so that you don’t buy something you don’t want, and also so that you don’t pass up on something that looks better on you than it did on the hanger.

To Buy or Not To Buy

After following all of these steps you’ll either know if you want and need to buy it, or not. Some important things to remember are to not overbuy or go thrift shopping continuously just because the prices are cheap; always keep your ideal aesthetic (step 1) and desired pieces (step 2) that you need in mind; and just have fun! Thrifting is truly an exploration and treasure hunt to be enjoyed. Taking these simple steps will help you on your way to curating a closet with beautiful thrift finds to compliment every facet of your style!

The Bird House

The last thing I bought

when I still had the money,

a bird house.

A charming thing,

simple as the house I was ready to build for myself,

intended for my garden,

the garden of my house,

my home.

House, birdhouse, garden,

a humble enough dream as dreams go,

a dog too, one day,

and trees, of course,

as many as my land would hold:

bamboo, mango, pine, magnolia.

All of that gone now—six years gone.

I’m still in an apartment

meant to be temporary,

next to the car repair shop

–reeking of oil, noxious, noisy.

Apartment neighbors come and go,

on to better lives,

trading up

to gardens and homes

and maybe even bird houses in their trees.

My furniture,

intended for a larger space,

piled in the living room,

a warehouse,

a shrine of sorts,

The Temple of Fecklessness.

Rugs rolled up,

pictures leaning this way and that,

stacked and dusty.

And there, on top of the bookshelf,

that bird house,

–peaked roof and unused perch–

unlived in as the house I’d planned for myself.

When at last the time comes,

I’ll want it with me in the coffin

when I’m burned:

me in my ancient shirts of Italian linen,

oft-patched and faded nearly white,

my baggy khakis, worn but clean and pressed,

as they always were in my life.

and my panama hat to one side,

grey with city pollution,

a ragged hole in its crown.

On the other side,

the little bird house,

the last thing I bought

when I still had the money,

when I was still me.

That bird house,

empty as the shell of my body,

empty as the heart and hopes

I will carry into eternity,

Next to me there

in that cheap pauper’s casket at the temple,

the only home left to me

in this life.
