I Wonder Which One Has My Eyes

Bright gold caught her eye like a flicker of a star behind a telescope. Not unexpected, given the event Pooja Naberrie was attending. There were plenty of people dressed in gold here. It was, after all, a senatorial event, and gold was so often the color of wealth.

(Not on Naboo, though. Her homeworld held the color equal with things like loyalty, and promise, and devotion.)

Pooja blinked, and took a small sip of her drink. Non-alcoholic. Alderaan, it turned out, had different opinions about fifteen year olds drinking than Naboo did. It wasn’t that Pooja liked the taste, but she had fond memories of her grandparents letting her sneak sips of their wine at dinner, the warm taste of spiced mead before the ancestors’ altar. The time she’d stolen a gulp of her aunt’s drink, only to realize it was something much stronger than a six year old could handle, spitting it out like poison. The sound of her uncle’s laugh.

With thoughts like those, no wonder she was seeing familiar gold. Memories had a funny way of haunting the present like that.

And perhaps she would have brushed it off as nostalgia tainted with the taste of wine, in another world, another life. Had she, the story would have gone very differently.

But Pooja glanced again toward the gold, and nearly choked herself on her drink. She was surly haunted, she thought to herself, coughing up what she had accidentally inhaled. The woman she’d been chatting with put a concerned hand on her arm, asked something that Pooja couldn’t hear over the roaring of blood in her ears. She waved the woman off, gave her some assurance and begged her excuse as Pooja stepped away. Her eyes haven’t left the golden protocol droid across the room.

It can’t be, a part of her thought, denial fighting with hope as she stalked her way toward the droid. It can’t possibly be him. After all, protocol droids all look so similar. After all, he’d disappeared after her aunt’s death. After all, what are the odds?

Then she got close enough to hear the droid’s voice and oh, she could never forget that distinct voice that had told her and her sister bedtime stories, that had fretted at their hijinks, worried for their safety while he ran after them as quickly as fused joint legs would let him.

The melancholy longing hit Pooja like a blow to the chest.

“Threepio?” she called out, and the droid turned to her and it was like she was eight years in the past and just a little girl again, her world safe and her family unbroken.

“Oh! Hello!” he said and he was just like she remembered him. “How can I be of assistance, miss…?”

He didn’t recognize her. It was crushing, the realization he didn’t recognize her. That even this was taken from her.

Someone had wiped his memory. (she remembered, her uncle telling her and Ryuu how he’d never had Artoo’s memory wiped, no matter how many military secrets the little astromech held. He said wiping a droid was something like murder.)

“My apologies,” she told Threepio, and it felt like talking to a stranger. “I confused you with a droid who once belonged to my aunt. My mistake.”

He waved one of his stiff arms and it was so familiar it hurt. “No need to apologize, miss. It is an easy mistake to make, I’m sure. I’m sorry I’m not the droid you’re looking for.”

Oh, but you are. Pooja biteher lip.

“Well, if you don’t need my assistance, I must return to my charge,” he told her, shuffling away. Toward the young princess of Alderaan, and a little blue and white astromech.

For a moment, Pooja felt like she couldn't breathe.

It hit her, suddenly, that Leia Organa was soon to celebrate her eighth birthday. That Leia Organa was the adopted daughter of Senator Bail Organa.

That Bail Organa had been the last person to see her aunt alive. Her very pregnant aunt.Oh, she thought, the pieces falling into place with all the inevitability of gravity.

New thing I think I'm going to do where I'll post snippets from one of my WIPs on Wednesdays, for funzies.

This one's inspired by this fic, where the Naberries are aware of Padme and Anakin's marriage. As soon as I read it it got me thinking of an au where Pooja realized who Leia was, and what chaos might ensue.

Just days away from the release of Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. Are you nervous? Am I nervous? No, not really! I am pleasantly excited. The release feels like a likeable burden. Woh hota hai na, maa nau mahine bachche ko pet mein palti hai. The pregnancy is over. Now it’s time for the delivery

And have you delivered what audiences expect? I’d like to think so. Fulfilling Salman Khan’s audiences’ expectations is not easy. They want to see their Bhaijaan as a true hero. But for me, living up to the audiences’ expectations came afterwards. First there was the story and screenplay. I did my best to tell the story that I had to. And then I made sure that I did full justice to my star’s image and what his fans expect. Pehley khana banaate hain phir ussey thaali mein khubsoorati se paroste hain. First comes the content, then the presentation.

Do you think Salman’s fans will go home happy this Eid? I would like to think so. Shall I tell you something? This is my first film where I feel so satisfied with what I’ve done. I saw the complete film with my entire team, and I felt this is what I had set out to make.

How much of the original Tamil film Veeram have you retained in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan? I wouldn’t call it a remake. Nor would I call it an adaptation. I would say it is a completely new experience. We’ve made our film as we thought it should be made. Those who have seen Veeram would see our film as an independent experience.

You are identified with the comedy genre. Does that bother you? Why should it? If I am identified with laughter joy and happiness, isn’t that a blessing? To make people happy is a gift. Having said this, I have written scripts for serious dramatic films. But comedy is the genre I am identified with. And as David Dhawanji told me, “When the car is running smoothly, why open the bonnet?”

You are going to be directing Hera Pheri 4. There are people out there who don’t want you to? You mean, they don’t want me to direct it? Yeah, even I’ve heard this. I’ve been asked this question by some journalists. My answer is simple. There has been no official announcement about it. So why talk about it now? Jab hoga tab dekhenge.

saw this post and felt like I should write something for my favorite character-

He knew everyone forgot, but he wasn't wavered. Apparently it was just a fleeting time period for him too, another twenty four hours. He looked at the date on the top and by the time the child inside him smiled, he was already skimming through the newspaper. You did your everyday chore as if it wasn't a special day, as if you forgot too. He rode around with Akhtar that day, had a chat by the gates with Jenny, talked about some future events with Babai and smiled at you while leaving for work. He knew nobody remembers. Maybe one day when they would be sitting with him, talking mindlessly and maybe then it will hit them that for a year, Ram didn't share his birthday with anyone and it passed by just like another day. He was content with it.

So when Ram saw a car outside his house, he wondered if jenny came to meet you. But when he stepped in the house, he did not expect Akhtar's ammi in his living room. He was scared at first- did something happen to you? But her warm smile left him confused. On further progression he realized that everyone he knew and loved stood there, probably waiting for him. Akhtar, his family, Babai, Jenny, and- "jaldi karo, ram aate honge" you emerged from another room, carrying the pooja thaali. Ram grazed up and down, yellow chiffon with red blouse. Your hair in a braid with pins and curls, bangles adorning your wrists. Earrings reaching back in your hair from chains and a brooch attached. A black bindi and deep black kajal. Your lips red.

His presence took you by surprise, and lowkey you were scared. What if he didn't like all this? Before you could muster the courage to say something, Akhtar was already pushing Ram in his room. "Bistar pe jo kapde hai woh pehen lena" Akhtar closed the room behind him, leaving Ram to wear the new clothes Akhtar got for him. About fifteen minutes later, Ram emerged from his room, hair wet and the kurta pajama vibrant blue. You could not stop staring at him. He walked towards you, his hand clasped down from nervousness. "tumhe yaad tha" he muttered and a small piece inside you broke. You picked up the pooja thaali, sliding the tilak up his temple. "Apne pati ka janmadin kaun bhulta hai?" You said, feeding him a small piece of kalakand. He blushed, holding your pinky from his beside you.

Everyone sat around the dining table, having dinner and laughing the evening away. Everyone remembered.

Mumma,

I don't know if you can see me right now, sitting in here, writing this. I don't even know where you are, if you are well. It is sort of ironic, isn't it? Science rationalizes and yet here I am, thinking about afterlife, an irrationality in the world of rational Homo sapiens.

Remember when I told you I will soar in the skies and go to a distant land where I know no one, and make a home there? Look at me making terrible attempts of keeping my word. I have been holding my pieces together with a weak glue since you left, and I hope that glue doesn't give up on me, in this foreign land of unknown faces.

You always told me that I have a nature that believes in avoiding conflict. In case of quarrels it is always me apologizing even if it wasn't my fault. You said that I keep getting hurt and yet keep smiling. Well, now I realize how true you were. Breaking a friendship of seven years, feels like trying to take a piece of your heart and discard it away. And I don't think I will be able to do that. Everytime I will talk to Hiteshi, will remind me of our friendship.... and her words. The sweetness and the pain. I guess I will have to get used to it, living in the middle of these two worlds.

I’m using The Addams Family vibes for this request, to channel the energy of Weirdos Who Care. Morticia - The possible vampire, and supporter of the craft. Morticia has known Gomez a long time, and while the agency might not have been their dream, it has become their passion. Wednesday - The one possibly trying to kill everyone. It’s pretty clear Wednesday is disgusted with everyone on a regular basis, but they never leave. In fact, it seems like they’re trying to put the other staff members and their tour participants in direct danger more often than not. Pugsley - The wildboy possibly trying to get killed. Pugsley has a nasty habit of being in exactly the wrong place at the right time, especially when Wednesday is involves. Grandmama - Theoretically hired to be the family friendly tourguide for their sunny disposition, it was a shock to discover they’re anything but. An acerbic wit and a short temper, family tours basically never go as planned, but they keep getting scheduled anyway. (suggested face, jeenu mahadevan)

Lurch - The imposing one. Here because she had nowhere else to go, Emmeline stumbled into this job looking for a way to work with creatures and never left.
