As in Sir Kay of the Round Table? Arthur’s foster brother known for his acid tongue? (please excuse the arthuriana)#anyway so here’s the thing#Kaine is ???? remarkably mild-mannered here???#which sure is something…#I guess the argument could be made that his time working with the New Warriors and leading a team during Scarlet Spiders#could have matured/mellowed him out a bit#but idk man#I always perceived Kaine as what you’d get if you wore down Peter’s already surprisingly short temper with chronic pain#and I liked that about him#he would cuss a blue streak at an old lady but he would still save that old lady#he had some major teeth and some very rough edges#maybe I’m blowing things out of proportion with only one issue out of this series#but I was just surprised by how…comparatively subdued Kaine is here#but all in all and again#at least he’s back on-panel and not as a last minute cameo after being absent the whole event hahaha

Hallow's Eve is running away from Ben Reilly who is out to kill her as he is under the spell from Druig brainwashing him. Hallow's Eve retreats to the sewers where she encounters Kaine and gets into a brief scuffle with him. Kaine tells Hallow's Eve to stand down as he is also investigating the strange things that are related to monsters and Ben Reilly. Hallow's Eve is exasperated with Kaine's rude attitude and being unable to help Ben Reilly. Suddenly, they are attacked by the brainwashed Ben Reilly who jumps in to kick Kaine from behind. Kaine tries to talk things out with Ben Reilly but the latter (Ben) is still under mind control by Druig the evil Eternal. Then, Hallow's Eve intervenes by putting on her magic mask to transform into a brute so that she could restrain Ben and talk him out of the brainwashing. Ben Reilly breaks free from her arms and lashes out at things around him until he calms down. Ben Reilly and Hallow's Eve hug each other from the ordeal.

#Marvel#Marvel comics#Marvel 616#Chasm: Curse of Kaine#latest release#Scarlet Spider#Kaine#Kaine Parker#Hallows’ Eve#Janine Godbe#Chasm#Ben Reilly#Janine does have a point here about their lack of options#but so does Kaine in that (at least how they’ve recently been portrayed) Ben and Janine have been enabling each other quite a bit#but that doesn’t excuse how hilarious it continues to be that Kaine’s trying to play brother’s keeper#I know I know they’ve explained it as far back as Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider#now that Kaine has found that he actually is capable of doing good he feels he owes it to Ben#(or at least to who Ben used to be) to keep an eye out for his brother#but maybe it’s because they’ve had so little time to actually converse outside of trying to legitimately shoot each other#(among other forms of bodily harm)#it still feels like not much time has passed since when Kaine was hunting Ben across the country just for the chance to make Ben miserable#(but gosh I wish we could see them just converse a bit…get Ben’s head fixed first and back to the heroic person he is PLEASE#and then let them have an honest conversation i.e. one of my comic book white whales)

I don’t know what I’d like prefer: a more complete and hopefully satisfying ending or something that#indicates we’ll be seeing more of Kaine soon#but I guess I’m always hoping for the latter hahaha

#Marvel#Marvel comics#Marvel 616#Chasm: Curse of Kaine#latest release#Scarlet Spider#Kaine#Kaine Parker#Chasm#Ben Reilly#Hallows’ Eve#Janine Godbe#wow…I think this just about perfectly encapsulates why I’ve felt like this miniseries has been ever so slightly off#I mean beggars can’t be too choosey and don’t get me wrong I’m primarily glad somebody remembered Kaine even existed#it also warms my heart to see Kaine growing into a heroic role#(and maybe I’m just being nit-picky over dialogue but hey this is a medium with limited dialogue space so writers have to be specific#in how they want to convey things)#but this contrast is just so wild#at a stretch I can see Kaine stopping to help civilians#he’s grown quite a bit since he started out in Houston…but seeing him so blatantly gung ho about it is a little jarring hahaha#as for Ben…oh Ben…I know they’ve been trying to establish Ben as vaguely despicable ever since this series opened#with him shaking tourists down for loose change but they can never make me believe that’s the real Ben !!!!#so Ben’s decision here is even more jarring hahaha#remember how Ben Reilly: Scarlet Spider ended with Ben despondent and essentially soulless#only for him to be promptly put «back to factory settings» very soon after in a Spider-verse event? I don’t care if it’s lazy#I hope they do something like that again and we have a heroic Ben back hahaha

#Marvel#Marvel comics#Marvel 616#Chasm: Curse of Kaine#latest release#Scarlet Spider#Kaine#Kaine Parker#Chasm#Ben Reilly#Hallows’ Eve#Janine Godbe#the comment about sibling rage being indistinguishable from mind control sent me#(because yeah sure particularly when it comes to these two)#that and how often Ben’s using the term «bro» (did he join up with the tracksuit mafia when I wasn’t looking or something?)#but also…Kaine’s comment about Ben deserving better real gets me#because on the one level it’s about how as Kaine was starting out as Scarlet Spider Ben was his model#who he thought was genuinely the better of the two of them#but also gosh dang it I am metaphorically grasping the lapels of Marvel editorial’s metaphorical shirt#and yelling the same thing at them#that Ben’s character deserves better than what they’ve been giving him for almost a decade#but we’ll see if that message ever gets through hahaha
