Charmed (1998) rewatch but only seasons 1-3 and then treating the season 4 premiere as an open-ended finale 🤷🏻♀️
#charmed#charmed 1998#charmed wb#i remember what comes next all too well#honestly I am sorry to miss out on some of the phoebe/cole scenes of early s4 when they were still fun#but i don't think i can take the s4 plotlines again let alone the reminder of s5 looming#going back as an adult is fascinating though#1 - so much of the fashion is back in#season one especially#also wow preteen/early teen me was really oblivious to fashion though i did wind up thinking leather pants = cool from what i absorbed then#2 - i can absolutely see the change from the original showrunner and really wish i knew what constance m burge intended next#3 - the inconsistencies. the inconsistencies#not just the mythology they were making up on the fly#(how long are you a ghost v moving on to next life since past lives are a thing but also visitors from the afterlife etc etc)#but the timeline#how old was phoebe when victor left (thank god they recast victor absolute glow-up)#why did leo have a past life in the 20s when he should have been already growing up#cole refers to 'mornings waking up next to you' about his ADA apartment when it's very pointed that he & phoebe only hook up there once#4- fascinating how sex is treated in the early seasons v the latter#(it went over my head back in the day but) they very much make clear which boyfriends they're sleeping with v which they *aren't*#(i.e. they spell out that prue only sleeps with andy once & never with jack & that piper never sleeps with Josh etc)#5 - biggest mistake the reboot made was doing the half-sister storyline in episode 1#it gave them no wiggle room when a sister DID leave the show but#more importantly you lose the original grew-up-together-push-each-others-buttons dynamic that is so good#not many siblings shows on that level (supernatural is the only comparison coming to mind)#6 - I'm so Team Cole still#talk about dropping the ball on character - his half-demon backstory motivated by saving his father's soul is great actually AND DROPPED#still about phoebe/cole but the prue and cole dynamic makes more sense knowing they were dating IRL#and shoehorning in paige out of the blue distrusting cole mid s4 as replacement for that dynamic just will never work for me#anyway as my sister is now my roommate in the old house we rent Charmed (early seasons) hits different and holds up better than i expected!

Charmed (2018) fans: This is a reinterpretation, a modern-day Charmed. You aren’t meant to sit there and compare it to the original. Harry isn’t Leo; Macy, Maggie, and Mel aren’t the original Charmed Ones. It’s a darker interpretation of the original Charmed. If someone is just gonna compare shows, they shouldn’t be watching them.
Okay, except here’s the thing: The reboot’s showrunners gave it the same name, the same basic concept, almost the same logo, and even use some of the original show’s mythology (Whitelighters, Darklighters, a Council of Elders, a demonic Underworld with a hierarchy, the Source of All Evil). There are numerous call-backs to the original show in the form of the Window of Opportunity, a split-second shot of Melinda Warren (the progenitor of the Warren line of witches and ancestress of the Charmed Ones) in the Veras’ Book of Shadows, Mel’s girlfriend being a police officer who gets tangled up in the Charmed Ones’ magical lives (a la Andy Trudeau), and Parker and Maggie’s relationship was directly inspired by Phoebe and Cole’s relationship in the original show, complete with Parker becoming the Demon Overlord in season 2 and asking Maggie for her hand in marriage as his queen. Not to mention Harry and Macy is the reboot’s equivalent to the Piper and Leo ship.
The network CANNOT do all of that, capitalizing on the original series’ name and fanbase, and then not expect people to compare the two shows. Especially not when Constance M. Burge, the creator of the original show, is credited in the reboot’s pilot despite having absolutely nothing to do with the reboot. (Legally, they had to credit her.)
As for this reboot being a darker interpretation of the original Charmed? Only in terms of the lighting, maybe. The original show’s pilot (“Something Wicca This Way Comes”) alone dealt with three estranged sisters moving back into their childhood home after the sudden death of their grandmother, discovering new powers and the fact they’re witches (all on their own, no less; Leo didn’t show up until the third episode and the sisters don’t find out he was a Whitelighter until 14 episodes into the 22-episode season), a serial killer who turns out to be a warlock (and Piper’s boyfriend) targeting female witches to gain their powers. He then tries to kill Piper before she freezes him and makes her escape, and then he goes after her in an attempt to murder all three sisters before they use the Power of Three to vanquish him (again, all on their own).
As for the rest of the season:
s01e02 “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” features a demon who poses as a photographer and targets beautiful young women to steal their youth, leaving them either charred skeletons or as old women (if the process is interrupted)
s01e03 “Thank You for Not Morphing”: Victor, the sisters’ long-lost estranged dad, suddenly comes back into his daughters’ lives after they’ve discovered that they’re witches, plays on Phoebe’s longing to form a connection with him, and is revealed to be working with shapeshifting demons to steal the Book of Shadows
s01e04 “Dead Man Dating” is essentially a supernatural murder investigation, with Mark enlisting the Charmed Ones’ help (as, being witches, they’re the only ones who can see him) in catching his killer before his soul is dragged to the Chinese afterlife by Yama
s01e05 “Dream Sorcerer”: the antagonist is a mortel incel asshole researching dream-leaping, using his abilities to kill women who’ve rejected him by invadng their dreams and murdering them in the dreamscape he’s created, which kills his victims in real life. He repeatedly targets Prue, and he dies before Inspectors Andy Trudeau and Darryl Morris can question him.
s01e07 “The Fourth Sister”: a lonely teenage girl with an interest in witchcraft is manipulated and preyed upon by an evil entity who presents itself as someone she can trust completely, all so she can be accepted
s01e10 “Wicca Envy”: Prue is framed for the theft of a valuable antique tiara by her boss in an attempt to blackmail the Charmed Ones into giving up their powers
s01e12 “The Wendigo”: the first episode where any of the sisters are transformed into another being against her will, played entirely for horror. Not to mention the serial killer Andy has been tracking down is the very FBI agent who came in to help with the case.
s01e13 “From Fear to Eternity”: aside from the first-ever introduction of Barbas the Demon of Fear, this whole episode revolves around the sisters’ worst fears come to life, and at least 10 other witches are already dead through the course of the episode. Phoebe faces her fear of losing one of her sisters, and Prue finally sees their long-dead mother’s spirit when Patty comes to help her.
s01e14 “Secrets and Guys” a young black male witch (whose only living relative is his father, his witch mother having died of illness a few months prior) is kidnapped by thugs who want to use his powers for a bank heist, kidnap Prue when she comes to help the 13-year-old boy, and it’s heavily implied the robbers would have killed them to tie up loose ends
s01e15 “Is There a Woogey in the House?”: your childhood nightmares are very real. You’re welcome.
s01e18 “When Bad Warlocks Turn Good”: take away the supernatural aspects, and this episode is primarily about a man being pressured by his highly toxic family into a part of their life that he’s already cut himself off from and turned his back on for his own well-being and mental health.
s01e22 “Deja Vu All Over Again”: at the end of each time loop, at least one of the Halliwells has to deal with the pain of seeing a sister die, and on the final time loop Prue sees her boyfriend (who she’d finally opened up to only weeks prior about being a witch) die while he’s trying to protect her and her sisters.
All this while juggling jobs and trying to have a normal life, as well as living in fear of their powers being discovered. The only major emotional stakes in the reboot’s first season are Maggie wanting to get into the sorority, later suddenly discovering she’s half-Black with her and Macy having the same father, and starting a relationship with Parker when he’s technically still dating Lucy; Macy keeping her job at the geneticist lab, trying to start a relationship with Galvin after some mixed signals from them both, and finding out the source of her “darkness”; and Mel using a spell to rewrite reality to keep her police girlfriend Niko safe from demons without bothering to get Niko’s consent first or reveal to her girlfriend that she’s a witch, as well as something something the S’arcana, sticking it to the Elder witches (while secretly working for them), and finding out who murdered her mother. And something about stopping the apocalypse, which the Veras don’t take seriously half the time anyway.
All this in just the first season. The second and third seasons of the reboot aren’t much better, IMO, but if you like the reboot, fine, whatever, you do you. Just don’t get mad when fans compare the two shows, because it’s really difficult not to do so.

Writing a witch based in the Charmed (1998) universe: Things to Know
magical witches are different from practitioners. Practitioners draw on outside sources of magic and can cast spells but are otherwise normal humans. Magical witches are a different humanoid species and have an internal spring from which they access their magic (Prose: Mystic Knoll)
witches are further categorized into lower-level and upper-level witches.
basic powers belonging to all witches are mediumship, scrying, potion-making, and spellcasting. Upper-level witches also possess the passive power of high resistance; lower-level witches do not.
Most witches have only one or two active powers. Melinda Warren having three powers was unusual, as she was the progenitor of her family line; the only other witch on-screen having more than two active powers is Richard Montana (conjuration, energy balls, telekinesis, fading)
Projection is an incredibly rare active power; the only witches seen possessing it on-screen are Wyatt Halliwell and Billie Jenkins, both of whom are upper-level witches with a major destiny and prophecy about them (the Twice-Blessed and the Ultimate Power, respectively)
witches can also be Firestarters (Christy Jenkins, Juliana O’Farrell) and empaths (Phoebe Halliwell)
Witches belonging to the Warren line possess one of the powers Melinda Warren carried down (premonitions, telekinesis, molecular immobilization) or a variant of the powers (cryokinesis, pyrokinesis, divination, molecular deceleration).
Male witches are witches. Witches (male or female) who kill another witch to steal their powers and turn their back on the Wiccan Rede in doing so become warlocks. A witch can also become a warlock by being magically bound to a warlock in a dark binding ceremony. (Warlocks can also be born to one or two warlock parents instead of being made.)
After receiving their powers, a newly-fledged witch must make the choice within 48 hours if they are going to use their powers for good or for evil. This is known as the window of opportunity.
Good witches are guided by a Whitelighter, sort of a guardian angel/guide/healer for good witches. Once a good witch turns evil, they have renounced their right to a Whitelighter.
A witch’s blood has magical properties and can pass the individual witch’s powers onto a mortal if the mortal is injected with the witch’s blood. Doing so will eventually cause the mortal to go insane and die, as humans are not meant to have magical powers. (TV: Astral Monkey)
Witches are the base for some demonic species, such as banshees (TV: Look Who’s Barking) and succubi (TV: She’s a Man, Baby, A Man).
Vampires and extremely powerful upper-level demons are immune to witch powers, with multiple demons only able to be vanquished through the Power of Three possessed by the Charmed Ones.
The Warren line is the most powerful line of witches, culminating in the arrival of the Charmed Ones: three sister witches, and the most powerful good witches of all time.
Witches can interbreed with humans, Whitelighters, Cupids, demons, and Darklighters. Whitelighter-witch relationships are forbidden, with the only exception being the eventual marriage of Charmed One Piper Halliwell and Whitelighter Leo Wyatt (their resulting children are all Whitelighter-witch hybrids).

My #1 post of 2022
re: Elders / Whitelighter rank/species confusion
Certain subsections of the Charmed (1998) fandom have the fanon that because Leo Wyatt was an Elder Whitelighter when his second son with Piper Halliwell was conceived, Chris is half-Elder as a result and therefore as or more powerful than his prophesized Twice-Blessed brother Wyatt. This fanon, however, is incorrect in regard to canon.
“Elder” is a specific rank of Whitelighter, one that can be earned (as we see with Leo becoming an Elder Whitelighter in the season 5 finale) or given to a chosen recipient (already destined to become an Elder Whitelighter) when the current Elder retires, as seen with retiring Elder Whitelighter Remus passing on his powers to the young male witch Kevin. All Elders are Whitelighters, but not all Whitelighters are Elders. The Elders are the elite of Whitelighter society, the rulers, and as such they have powers to go along with their higher rank that non-Elder Whitelighters do not have.
Common Whitelighter powers are the following: orbing, sensing, healing, omnilingualism, dream-walking, photokinesis, telekinesis, levitation, and invisibility. As a result of their higher ranking, Elders receive powers that ordinary Whitelighters do not have, namely electrokinesis, portal creation, force field, telekinetic orbing, and power granting/stripping.
The closest comparison would be to Time Lords/Gallifreyans and the species/rank confusion there in Doctor Who. All Time Lords are Gallifreyans, but not all Gallifreyans are Time Lords. The Time Lords are the elite of Gallifreyan society, the only ones blessed with Rassilon’s gift of regeneration and the ability to time-travel in a TARDIS thanks to the Rassilon Imprimatur. (In the early days, regeneration was also granted to House priests as well.)
Now that that is established, let’s move onto the fanon surrounding Chris and him supposedly being half-Elder Whitelighter.
Since we’ve established that Elder is a higher rank of Whitelighter and Leo did not change species when he became an Elder, Chris is an ordinary Whitelighter-witch from the Warren line. Elder is a rank that Chris does not have, so his Whitelighter side is no more powerful than Wyatt’s. Actually, we see that Chris struggles with certain aspects of his Whitelighter side: he is unable to heal, and he doesn’t have the same language ability that Leo does.
There are other things to consider when taking into account Chris’s lower power level in comparison to Wyatt: Birth order and the prophecy of the Twice-Blessed. We see with Prue that the firstborn witch in a sibling set is always more powerful than their sibling(s). Wyatt was the firstborn out of Piper’s children, and he is the subject of the Twice-Blessed prophecy. Magic was out of commission on the day Wyatt was born, and he is the heir to Excalibur.
In comparison, Chris is not the firstborn and there is no special prophecy about him that says he’s destined to be super-powerful. Nor is he the heir to Excalibur. He was also not born in the Manor, so he doesn’t have the connection to the Nexus that Phoebe and Wyatt did. He is much less powerful than Wyatt, but he makes up for that in how he uses his powers: he’s honed his telekinesis to scary degrees, able to telekinetically crush a person’s heart within their body, scatter a Whitelighter’s orbs, and fling someone telekinetically across a room hard enough to make the individual briefly lose consciousness on impact.
Chris is nowhere near as powerful as Wyatt in both his witch and Whitelighter sides, but he doesn’t need to be. He’s the underdog, and making him as or more powerful as Wyatt due to him being “half-Elder” or somesuch completely undoes the entire point of why the fandom loves him so much in the first place.

Hey Marc haters and anyone who is saying he was a creep:
I have multiple quotes from people calling him a nice man, sweet even. Even -gasp- Nana herself! example one: Cyia Batten (the first Ziyal). "Marc Alaimo was simply the sweetest man on and off set. Such a pro. I just adored him and was so grateful I got to work with him." Here's a link to the interview where she talks about her roles in Star Trek: https://www.startrek.com/article/enterprises-orion-slave-girls-part-2?fbclid=IwAR3WkSSIUvJ7rCtnvqzutG45Dlfr9yfEp4kVx8xb77Y_aL4zxP98o4Cr9Rk example two: "The mind meld was way cool. I had a wonderful time working with Marc Alaimo, who played Gul Dukat. He was such a gentle, sweet guy." (Bertila Damas, 'Sakonna', startrek.com) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmkT3oRJuaA example three: According to her old interviews, Nana had trouble separating Marc from his role but it wasn't against him personally: A May 1996 interview http://nanavision.com/?p=13 (...) Marc Alaimo is an interesting story because of what I was saying before about my scenes with Dukat being difficult for me to do. Marc is the sweetest man in the world. He has had my son Buster and me over at his house and we spent the day with him. He’s delightful, but when he’s on the set, he is Dukat. He’s already in makeup and I can’t see him as anything else. I don’t banter very much with Marc. It’s just something visceral in me that goes right into Kira.” From someone's report from Novacon convention in April 1997: Nana used to say that she never liked to work with Mark Alaimo (Dukat). She always saw him in makeup and just never wanted to be near him at all because of what his character stood for. There was always tension between the two of them on the set, lines would be changed. Just before Thanksgiving last year someone on the set asked Mark if he had any plans for Thanksgiving and he said "no." Nana then invited him over to her house for the holiday and said he'd come. Come Thanksgiving he shows up and they have dinner "and he is sweet and funny and charming and incredible with the kids... rolling on the floor with Buster." She realized that she hated him as Dukat and not as a person. After dinner she said she wanted him to come over again so they could talk and have a good time, but when they met again on the set later in full make-up, she said this curt "Hello" to him and ignored him feeling awful -- she couldn't get past what his make-up represents to the Kira character.
here's some more: Star Trek Monthly, January 1998 http://nanavision.com/?p=14 That rhythm was evident earlier today, when Visitor and Marc Alaimo squared off in Sisko’s former office. “It was Dukat at his most offensive. Things are heating up very much on the station, and I’m interested myself to see where it’s going to go between the two of us.” That mounting tension is so real, one wonders if Nana Visitor has a hard time separating Marc Alaimo the actor from the evil Cardassian he so wonderfully portrays. “It always has been hard for me,” she confesses. “I’ve found through the seasons that I’ve treated Marc badly, because every time I’ve seen him, he’s made up like a Cardassian, and all the prejudices hit me right away of what my character thinks of Dukat. But this season, probably because things are emotionally very sensitive in the scenes, we’re dealing with more layers than just one. We’ve been fooling around and talking about scenes and actually having more of what we have on weekends than we usually have on the set.” (http://trekbbs.com/.../true-the-cast-did-not-get.../page-2) another positive marc quote: Melanie Smith, The 7th Rule podcast episode #146, December 13th, 2021: "There was a natural intensity to Marc . . . he came to truly love Ziyal. . . . he would have to come to understand forgiveness after that. . . Marc has a strong, direct personality that really helped me play my character. And it gave me something to push against and it gave him something to fall against that was gentle. So it was nice chemistry with us."
WITH SOURCES
don't hate on my boi again.
honestly, tw: dukat and everything he is.
i think the scariest thing about dukat is that he's real. i mean this in two ways: first, marc alaimo is an asshole. if you haven't seen "what we left behind," the ds9 doc, try and find it. the cast members were not shy about telling how they felt about him. he made nana visitor just as uncomfortable as gul dukat made nerys.
second, our world leaders are literally like this. you have to be in order to justify the kinds of things those people do. dukat is a psychotic narcissist who was able to justify his sickness by destroying an entire civilization.
i don't mean this in an ugly way, bc people can like whoever they like and it literally does not affect me. but, i could never find him likeable, or even "hate to love." he's disturbing. he's well written, and terrifying.

Don't Burn These Witches!
Witches, witches, witches, this certainly was an episode about witches. It seems like every year somebody will tell you that 'witches are back' and that they're 'all the hype now'. That all started with Charmed.
Emilio can hate this series all he wants, but without these three witches we wouldn't have... the reboot of Charmed...
If you made your way all the way to our Tumblr, you're probably here for some visual stuff. Like... comics! Black Magick is one of the best looking comics in the industry at the moment:
Look at those colors and the lack of it!
Not everybody is a fan of The Witches of Eastwick, but come on, the cherry scene...
Can't hate that right?
And finally, Bayonetta.
Look at that crazy design. It's the coolest thing ever!
Let's rank these witches:
'Hurling Day’ (Dinosaurs, season 01, episode 03, TV, 1991)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (movie, 2001)
Death Note vol 1 (manga, 2003)
Samurai Jack Season 01 (cartoon, 2001)
Scott Pilgrim Gets it Together (comic, 2007)
Bayonetta (game, 2009)
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (game, 2013)
Black Magick (comic, 2015)
New Super Mario Bros. (game, 2006)
Donkey Kong (game, 1981)

Master Post
Lost looking for something on this blog? This post is for you!
Months listed next to each show/movie/etc. below are those in which they can be found and usually were reblogged a lot.
I don’t regularly reblog all the shows I watch. I usually do “catch-up” reblogs for many of my shows, so expect occasional mass reblogs (especially at the beginning of a new month).
This post is here to give you an idea of where to search for gifs and photos, etc. of a particular subject on my blog. I’m usually pretty good with tagging everything, but in some cases it may be easier to go through the posts by month instead of by the tags.
It’s also my personal guide to what to reblog in the future, so this post will be updated or reposted whenever I’ve had a lot of activity or it’s a new month.

Rules: Pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions. Don’t cheat. Tag 10 (or however many) people.
1. Charmed (1998-2006)
2. Supernatural (2005-2020)
3. Full House (1987-1995)
4. The White Queen (2013)
5. The White Princess (2017)
/
i. Who is your favourite character in 2?
Sam Winchester
ii. Who is your least favourite character in 1?
Ugh probably Sheridan or Kyle Brody, but if you’re talking about major characters, then probably Jason Dean or Richard whatever his name was (Paige’s boyfriend)
iii. What is your favourite episode of 4?
I had to check the episode list because literal years will pass within a single episode but probably either episode 7 (Poison and Mamlsey Wine) or episode 10 (The Final Battle) (the last episode)
iv. What is your favourite season of 5?
There’s only one season technically so... one
v. Who is your favourite couple in 3?
Jesse and Joey are honestly my non-romantic OTP those two are just living their best lives.
vi. Who is your favourite couple in 2?
There’s so many damn characters I can’t keep track........... honestly I don’t have one lmao
vii. What is your favourite episode of 1?
HMMMM either That 70s Episode or Be Careful What You Witch For
viii. What is your favourite episode of 5?
Episode 2 (Hearts and Minds)
ix. What is your favourite season of 2?
Either season 5 or season 7
x. How long have you watched 1?
Ok I have a very specific memory for this... it was May 2011 and I was on the way home from a slumber party and my mum and I were talking about a slumber party I had been to a few months earlier for twins who watched charmed and I was basically pulling the whole “they can watch it so why can’t I” to which mum told me she never said I couldn’t watch it so once I got home she let me start watching her charmed dvds lmao... so basically I’ve been watching it since I was 10
xi. How did you become interested in 3?
When I was in upper primary school (aged around 10 or 11) my school library had some of the Two of A Kind books by the Olsen Twins and I would frequently borrow them. Not long after my mum told me the Olsen Twins were on Full House and I started watching clips on YouTube. So in reality I’ve been interested in Full House for almost ten years, but I only actually started watching the series properly about two weeks ago.
xii. Who is your favourite actor in 4?
Aneurin Barnard...... I really sat here for months wondering if I was lesbian or bisexual then rewatched The White Queen and went “holy fuck yeah I’m definitely bi”
xiii. Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5?
1 (Charmed), but only because I’ve watched it since I was a kid so it’s got that sentimental value lmao
xiv. Which have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?
1 (Charmed) lmao
xv. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
God that is a tough fuckin question. Who would want to live in the 15th century and be executed or die of disease........ probably Elizabeth of York, since she seemed to end up the luckiest out of everyone (in that series at least). If I was going based on pure lust it would be Anne Neville 👀
xvi. Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work?
No lmao they’re set 500 years apart
xvii. Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple?
Hmmmmm idk maybe Paige and Cole might have worked (without her paranoia about him obviously)
xviii. Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5?
Gotta say 3 (Full House) because even though I love that period of history, the constant historical inaccuracies in 5 (The White Queen) frustrate me SO much... Henry VII and Elizabeth of York had more than three children dammit!!
xix. Which has the better theme music, 2 or 4?
4 lmao Supernatural doesn’t even have a theme does it? Well The White Queen’s is better anyway
/
I tag: @stoneqoldcrazy @funkytalia @90sbrianmay @lukestarkillerisgay @pierobarone @httprjxp and @saltedtoast you don’t have to do it of course but hey maybe it might be a few minutes of fun during this damn isolation lmao

I love coming to Austin — It’s a charming city with perhaps the most gracious fans in the country. This was my second time attending a game at the University of Texas, my first was back in 2014 when the Longhorns hosted BYU. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and the first thing you think as you approach Darrell K. Royal Stadium is just how big it is. It’s one of the biggest stadiums in the country, seating over 100,000 fans. The gameday experience is fan-friendly with all kinds of interactive things for fans of all ages, and the tailgating scene is vibrant around the stadium and into Downtown Austin. With No.13 West Virginia in town to face the No.17 Longhorns, I expected a good game. I told a friend I was with that I expected a shootout and that the last team with the ball would win. That’s exactly what we got!
Gameday in Austin
TEXAS FOOTBALL BEGINS
The University of Texas fielded its first permanent football team in 1893 managed by Albert Lefevra, the secretary-treasurer of the UT Athletic Association. The team played four games, two in the fall and two more in the spring, winning all four while shutting out every opponent. The first was played at the Dallas Fair Grounds against the Dallas Football Club that claimed to be the best in the state. The game attracted a then-record 1,200 onlookers.
Texas officially hired its first coach, R.D. Wentworth for a salary of $325 plus expenses. Wentworth’s teams shut out their first six opponents, outscoring them 191–0 before losing their last game of the year to Missouri 28–0. There were a number of firsts in Wentworth’s one season as head coach at Texas. The first ever meeting against Texas A&M, which resulted in a 38–0 shutout victory for Texas and the first ever meeting against Arkansas, which was a 54–0 Texas victory, setting the stage for long rivalries with the Aggies and the Razorbacks.
LEGENDARY COACHES
The Longhorns have had a rich tradition of coaches that have strolled the sidelines. Clyde Littlefield was the first to play for and coach the Longhorns. He was head coach from 1927-36 and led the Longhorns to a 44-18-6 record during his tenure that included two Southwest Conference Championships. During the Great Depression, Dana X. Bible was hired to be the coach and athletics director. Bible previously had tremendous success at Nebraska and Texas A&M. It was a bold move by the university and a decision that would lay the foundation for Texas Football. In 1937, the Bible era debuted with a 25–12 victory over Texas Tech in Austin. Texas would only win one more game in Bible’s first year, a stunning 9-6 defensive battle over 4th-ranked Baylor. The 1938 season would not be any better as the Longhorns only victory of the season was in the final game of the season, a 7-6 win over Texas A&M in Austin. Fans grew anxious, wanting Texas to dominate the college football scene.
Earl Campbell
Bible proved to be an outstanding recruiter as he brought several outstanding players to campus. After two rough seasons where Texas won a total of three games, Bible successfully transformed Texas into a national powerhouse. It began with the 1939 season, as Texas opened with a shutout win over Florida 12–0, followed by a 17-7 victory at Wisconsin. Then the turning point came in October 1939 when Texas was playing Arkansas in Austin. Down 13–7 with under 30 seconds to play, and fans heading for the exits, Longhorns Fullback R.B. Patrick flipped a short pass to Halfback Jack Crain who ran 67 yards untouched, to tie the game at 13. Those same fans that were leaving the stadium came pouring back in and onto the field. After the field was cleared, Crain booted the extra point and Texas defeated Arkansas 14–13. This game became known as the “Renaissance Game” of the Dana X. Bible era. The 1939 season was pivotal in providing momentum for the following decade as Texas would again become one of the most successful teams throughout the 1940’s. National Championship talks began as Texas compiled their first All-American’s with Malcolm Kutner, Jack Crain, and Noble Doss. Bible finished his coaching career with a 63-31-3 record, with three Southwest Conference titles. He would later hire Darrell Royal to serve as head coach. Darrell K. Royal, a native Oklahoman, coached at Mississippi State and Washington before being hired in 1957. Royal would return the Texas football program to national prominence, winning Southwest Conference titles six years in a row, and making six straight Cotton Bowl appearances. During his 20-years at Texas, the Longhorns never had a losing season. He led the Longhorns to three National Championships, 11 Southwest Conference titles, 16 bowl games, and nine Top-5 poll rankings. They would have streaks that included 30 straight victories, and 42 consecutive home wins, a run that lasted 1968–1976. He retired as the most successful coach at the University of Texas, with a record of 167–47–5. In 1998, Mack Brown was hired away from North Carolina and he quickly became a fan favorite. Brown had a tremendous career in Austin, as he led the team to a 158-48 record. Under his direction, the Longhorns won two Big 12 Conference Championships, a BCS National Championship, and held a 3-1 record in BCS games. He finished his career at Texas second in wins only to Royal.

BEVO
Tradition is rich here! I was absolutely blown away with the pre-game and in game fun! Bevo, a Texas longhorn steer, is one of most famous mascots in the country. He first appeared during a 1916 Thanksgiving Day game against Texas A&M. The first Bevo was actually named Bo but came to be called Bevo, after the campus magazine referred to him as Bevo. The school did not have the money to take care of Bevo and he was not tame enough to be allowed to roam the campus. He would be fattened up, and served at the football banquet in 1920. There have been a total of 14 Bevo’s. Bevo XIV has served since the 2004 season. Over the years, there have been several great Bevo stories. Bevo II charged a SMU cheerleader, who defended himself with his megaphone. Bevo III escaped from his enclosure and ran amok on the campus for 2 days. Bevo IV attacked a parked car, and Bevo V broke free and caused the Baylor band to scatter.
Big Bertha
THE BAND AND TRADITIONS
The Longhorn Band has two songs that capture the crowd. “Texas Fight” is the official fight song of the university, and it is sung to a fast tempo version of “Taps.” The schools alma-matter is “The Eyes of Texas,” sung to the tune of “I’ve been Working on the Railroad.”
Hook ‘Em Horns – the school hand signal, was introduced at a pep rally in 1955. The hand signal is known throughout the entire country and Sports Illustrated featured the Hook ‘Em Horns gesture in front of a Texas pennant on the cover of the September 10, 1973 issue.
Smokey the Cannon, a replica of a Civil War cannon is fired before kickoff and after Texas scores.
The Sweetheart of the Longhorn Band is actually a drum that measures more than 10-feet high. Big Bertha is considered to be the world’s largest drum (actually second largest) and it is played at halftime and after Texas touchdowns.
Lighting the Tower (also known as the Main Building) in orange for various types of sporting victories. After National Championship victories, windows are lighted in the main building to display a large number 1.
RIVALRIES
West Virginia fans captured a classic
OKLAHOMA – The “Red River Rivalry” with Oklahoma is one of the oldest and best known college football rivalries. The rivalry originated in 1900, and the schools play at a neutral site, the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, during the Texas State Fair. The stadium is split, with each team having an equal number of supporters on each side of the 50-yard line. Texas state flags fly around the Longhorn end of the stadium and Oklahoma state flags on the Sooner side. The meeting in 1976 was a heated affair as the Oklahoma staff was accused of spying on Texas’ practices, a move later confirmed by former OU head coach Barry Switzer. Texas leads the all-time series 62–46–5.
ARKANSAS – These two schools are old Southwest Conference combatants first meeting in 1894. The Longhorns blew out the Razorbacks 54-0 that first game. Since then, the two programs have met 77 more times, with Texas holding a decisive 56–22–0 advantage. The seriest have featured many big games, including the meeting in 1969 known as the true Game of the Century commemorating the 100th year of college football, This game still does not sit well with Razorback fans to this day. Arkansas lead the game throughout only to have Texas come from behind and win in the final minutes, 15–14, which led to the Longhorns 1969 National Championship. The game was attended by President Richard Nixon who crowned the Longhorns the National Champion in the locker room.
TEXAS A&M – The Longhorns won the very first game against the Aggies back in 1894, a 38-0 victory, and actually won the first seven games in this series, all by shutout! The Aggies decision to join the Southeastern Conference in 2012 effectively ended the 118-year rivalry, with Texas leading the series 76–37–5.
Thrilling finish
OUR GAME
West Virginia’s Will Grier hit Gary Jennings with a 33-yard scoring pass with 16 seconds left and then ran for a two-point conversion to lead the Mountaineers over the Longhorns 42-41. Grier’s heroics came just two minutes after Sam Ehlinger had connected with Devin DuVernay on a 48-yard pass, breaking a 34-34 tie. There were nine lead changes in a game that featured 1,098 total yards and 56 first downs. It was the best game I have seen this year.
Ready for football!

Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon on their new Netflix show Ratched
Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon on their new Netflix show Ratched
TV legends don’t get extra prolific than Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon. The former, born in Florida and raised in New York, started performing on Broadway earlier than breaking via in big-screen productions reminiscent of 12 Years a Slave (2013) and Carol (2015). She’s develop into greatest recognized, nevertheless, for her collaborations with hit-making producer Ryan Murphy. Her chameleonic turns throughout eight seasons of American Horror Story (2011 to current) earned her 5 Emmy nominations and she gained each an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark in American Crime Story: The People v OJ Simpson (2016)—no imply feat for an actor who continues to be solely 45.
Meanwhile, native New Yorker Nixon, now 54, shot to prominence as Miranda Hobbes in HBO’s era-defining Sex and the City (1998 to 2004). She secured an Emmy for the position within the show’s last yr, appeared in its two cinematic spinoffs in 2008 and 2010, and then charmed critics along with her startling efficiency as Emily Dickinson in A Quiet Passion (2016). In 2018, she additionally introduced her marketing campaign for governor of New York. She misplaced to the incumbent Andrew Cuomo, however she has remained a vocal advocate for girls’s healthcare and LGBTQ+ rights. Both Nixon and Paulson determine as members of the latter group—Nixon is married to activist Christine Marinoni, with whom she has a younger son, whereas Paulson’s associate is stage and display screen veteran Holland Taylor.
This month, the 2 actors will cross paths in Ratched, the long-awaited eight-part Netflix collection created by Evan Romansky and produced by Murphy. It’s centred on one of many biggest villains of all time: nurse Mildred Ratched, the antagonist of Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and the 1975 movie of the identical title, for which Louise Fletcher gained the very best actress Oscar.

The show acts as a prequel to the unique story, opening in 1947, when Mildred (an eerie Paulson) arrives at a psychiatric hospital in California on a mysterious mission. She watches as medical doctors perform disturbing experiments on the human thoughts, trying to “reverse” all the things from mania to lesbianism. She additionally meets an assortment of eccentric characters—Judy Davis as a cranky nurse, Sharon Stone as a crazed heiress—however is maybe most struck by Gwendolyn Briggs (a sublime Nixon), the queer press secretary to the state’s governor.
As they develop into associates, the latter begins to fall for Mildred, who’s uncertain of how one can reply. Add within the grotesque spectacle of American Horror Story, the retro aesthetics of Feud: Bette and Joan (2017), a rating worthy of a Hitchcock movie and sweeping pictures of the picturesque Pacific coast, and you’ve gotten your subsequent important binge-watch.
Ahead of the show’s launch on September 18, we spoke to Paulson and Nixon about taking part in one another’s love pursuits, the main points to look out for in their costumes and their scariest day on set.
Was it Ryan Murphy who first approached you each about Ratched?
Cynthia Nixon: “I’d been hearing about the project for a while and that there were a number of characters that I might be right for. Then, Ryan approached me about playing Gwendolyn. She is so ahead of her time. She’s a queer woman and someone who wants not just to be behind the scenes in politics, but also to eventually be the candidate herself. That’s a tall order in this period.”
Sarah Paulson: “Ryan didn’t come to me! [laughs] My agent called and said, ‘Is Ryan not talking to you about Ratched?’ I was like, ‘No!’ I called him and he said, ‘I wasn’t sure if it was something you wanted to do. You spent all this time on American Horror Story playing a different character every season. I don’t know if you’re going to want to play the same character season after season.’ And I was like, ‘I might! You could just have asked me.’ And then, I thought, ‘Why would I want to faceplant in front of the whole world by taking on a character that was made famous by Louise Fletcher, who gives an Oscar-winning performance?’ It might be the craziest thing I’ve ever thought about doing and that made it too intriguing to pass up. I’m a glutton for punishment.”

Nurse Ratched is an iconic villain. What was it about her that you simply needed to discover additional?
SP: “I’d seen [One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest] when I was younger and thought she was heinous. When I rewatched it, I had such a different view! I was looking for a way to get inside her head and I said, ‘This woman is a victim of a patriarchal infrastructure at this hospital.’ The question is would we have hated the character so much if a man was playing it? We come up against our own expectations that a woman who is a nurse should be maternal and soft. If not, she’s a villain.”
Sparks fly when Mildred and Gwendolyn first meet. How did you each construct that relationship?
CN: “Sarah and I are great friends and we’ve known each other a long time. We had this built-in familiarity and intimacy. I love that first scene where the women are alone and Gwendolyn quickly asks her out on what turns out to be a date. I admire so much how she keeps putting herself out there. It’s hard to keep affirming that you have feelings for someone when they keep slapping you down. It’s even harder if you’re a woman talking to another woman in 1947.”
SP: “I was so excited to work with Cynthia. In terms of the way we worked on this relationship, by the time that part of the narrative takes shape, we were deep enough into our characters that we were just operating as Mildred and Gwendolyn. Mildred’s fear, trepidation and anxiety is not about confronting her sexuality, but allowing some kind of joy into her life—something that she’s had so little of. That made me feel fluttery when doing these scenes. There was one scene where the director said, ‘You actually flushed.’ With Cynthia, there was a wonderful synergy and alchemy.”
Is it true that there was an lively shooter incident when you have been each filming in Los Angeles?
CN: “It was wild. We were filming at a restaurant in downtown Los Angeles, and there was an active shooter on the street. So, we were all basically locked in the restaurant for hours. It all turned out fine, though. No one was harmed.”
SP: “That place happened to have a bunch of booze. Sarah, our set costumer who used to be a bartender, made us drinks. I had a few and then did a scene. Everytime I watch that scene, I’m like, ‘Drunk!’ It was one of those moments where, as hideous as it was, we were still all together. In light of what we’re all dealing with now with coronavirus, those days are over. We couldn’t be in an enclosed space and mask-free, just talking and drinking. I’m now lamenting that fact.”
The forged contains unimaginable ladies in their forties, fifties and—with Sharon Stone and Judy Davis—sixties. Is Hollywood making progress on the subject of giving older ladies higher elements?
CN: “I think that’s a little too optimistic. Ratched isn’t necessarily an indication of the direction Hollywood is moving in, but it’s an indication of this thing that Ryan has discovered, which is that there are all of these amazing actresses in their forties, fifties, sixties, seventies, and beyond who don’t get offered that many roles. They are there to be cast and he writes these incredibly dynamic characters for them—characters with agency who are not just appendages, not just wives and mothers. They are women who are at the centre of their own lives and stories.”
SP: “I hope [things are changing], but if that doesn’t happen everywhere, it certainly will [continue to] in Ryan’s world. He’s given these great roles to Jessica [Lange], Kathy [Bates] and me. It’s rare that you find yourself at 45 saying, ‘All of the great parts that I’ve always hoped to play—now I’m getting to play them.’ I feel lucky to be in his orbit because I know this is important to him and he’s always seeking out these stories. That means we all get to work and put out this kind of content and so audiences get more and more used to seeing faces on screen that are not children’s faces.”
The costumes on the show are spectacular. What particulars ought to viewers look out for?
SP: “The one I loved most of all is the outfit I’m wearing when I first arrive at the gas station [as seen in the trailer]. It had this beautiful hat, different shades of tan and rust, and the ‘R’ [initial] pin. This era has all of the things I love: shoulder pads, little waists, big skirts. It was a dream!”
CN: “Gwendolyn has two distinct looks: her professional look and her more ‘at ease’ look, where she looks gayer. I shared pictures with the wardrobe department of this woman named Lorena Hickok who was Eleanor Roosevelt’s lover. She was a journalist and mostly out of the closet in her world, but careful nonetheless. I tried to carry the spirit of Lorena into Gwendolyn. As a gay woman in the 1940s, you’re walking a fine line. You don’t want everyone to realise you’re gay, but you’re also trying to send signals to women who might be looking more carefully.”
In the show, lesbianism is handled as a illness to be cured, together with mania and despair. What kind of conversations do you hope it conjures up round psychological well being within the 1940s and now?
CN: “The mistake we keep making with mental health is that we see mental illness as a moral failing rather than a medical condition. So many of the treatments used in the past, and still used now, focus on punishing the person enough so they don’t do it again. But trying to suppress a part of yourself without actually examining it never works. The more you push something down, the harder it pushes back against you. So, I think whether you’re dealing with a certifiable mental illness or just a trait that some people have inside them, the key is to treat yourself with kindness.”
What has your quarantine expertise been like over the previous few months?
CN: “It’s been really hard, particularly homeschooling because parents aren’t teachers and [our son] misses his friends. But I have money in the bank and a partner who is with me, so any complaints that we have are so minor compared to what so many people are going through.”
SP: “It’s been difficult, but I’ve got my health and so have the people in my immediate circle, so I just feel an extraordinary amount of sympathy and compassion for those who don’t right now.”
What are your hopes for the long run after this tumultuous time frame?
SP: “I hope Joe Biden becomes president and that things start to move in the right direction.”
CN: “I hope that the Black Lives Matter movement is able to have a lasting impact. The treatment that people of colour receive at the hands of the police needs to change and our approach to criminal justice needs to be upended. I truly hope and believe that Trump will not be reelected in November. He is effectively speaking in the language of white supremacy, and so when one goes to the ballots, one can choose to vote for white supremacy or against it. It’s that simple.”

so all your posts about this show Hornblower have got me interested. Where can I watch it? Also, this show isn't recent, right? Just curious cause I don't think I heard of Ioan Gruffudd being in anything new.
hey there! its not new no, the first two season were out in 1998 and the last 2 in 2001, however Ioan has been in a few shows recently, Forever and a british drama named Liar but I haven’t seen either yet (though I’m really glad he’s back on our screens finally) It’s really great show especially for its time (though most of the sets are real and very natural looking the cgi is hella dated but it gives it charm and age i guess)
The show which is based on books follows Horatio Hornblower from his first role on ship as Midshipman and then on to him progressing up and generally being the best sailor and strategist ever. The supporting crew and its cast are just as lovable and we really grow to care for each crew member and worry for them. The History is sound too, as its set during the French Revolution to Napoleon’s War. I really recommend this show, I’ve heard of it but I just sat down on my day off and caught the beginning of Mutiny (s3) and I was so invested in the story and the characters I had to watch more. You can watch 1080p quality of the show for free on youtube in fact! /watch?v=Cn9A7_N6mUk I hope this works for you. I eventually got the DVD from HMV and got all 8 feature length episodes of £12 which is a bargain tbh. Well sorry for the long answer but its such a fun and interesting show and I hope you get around to watching it!!

Wednesdays with Writers with Jennifer Steil, Joanne Rocklin and Mother’s Day Hosanna.
Social distancing in this COVID19 era has been detrimental to authors. As part of our Be the Star You Are! Disaster Relief Outreach program, Be the Star You Are!® has collaborated with the Authors Guild to showcase the new books launched by many authors from around the country in a variety of genres. For the next few months, make sure you are tuned in to both StarStyle®-Be the Star You Are!® on Wednesdays at 4pm PT for “Wednesdays with Writers “as well as Express Yourself!™ airing on Sundays at 3pm PT for “Super Smart Sundays”, both broadcasting right here on the Voice America Network, Empowerment Channel to learn about these fantastic authors and books. It’s a giant read-a-thon.
Cynthia Brian interviews Jennifer Steil about her new book, Exile Music which explores an overlooked slice of World War II history, telling the story of a family of Jewish Viennese musicians who find sanctuary in Bolivia in 1939. Steil offers a beautiful meditation on the things we all hold dear - family, friendship, home.
In segment two, author Joanne Rocklin showcases her newest picture book, Good Guy, Bad Guys, about playing pretend—and the joy of trying out being “bad” or “good.” This charming picture book is a timeless celebration of imagination and make-believe, showing readers that kids can safely try out good and bad personas as they play.
What’s a hosanna? It’s whatever makes you feel special. Cynthia Brian reads a passage about her Mother from Be the Star You Are!® 99 Gifts for Living Loving, Laughing, and Learning to Make a Difference as a homage to the sacrifices and dedications of Moms everywhere!
