Summary:

In the dying months of the Kellerun uprising, the Federation finally dispatches aid. Cut off from their convoy, stranded and alone, a junior Starfleet officer and a Kellerun militia soldier face a war of their own.

It’s here! The fic that started with the thought “so Vance and Rayner definitely explored each other’s bodies, right?”, before proceeding at warp speed all the way from pwp one-shot to pwp (porn with politics) multichapter tale.  

The first few chapters are written, and I know where I want the rest of the story to go; I’ll space posting of the completed chapters out a little to give myself some buffer.

When Vance mentioned in season 4 of Discovery that no one had heard from the Q Continuum in 600 years, I naturally figured that Picard s2 would explain why. Haha, nope!

This sounds interesting. For the ask game--

It's for the greater good, he told himself. Yes, he had to lie to the Federation Council but it was necessary.

So he took a deep breath. Clasped his hands behind his back. Would cross his fingers like a fibbing kid if he thought he could get away with it. “The proof is definitive. They are who they say they are.”

The proof was not definitive. The proof was flimsy at best.

“Admiral Vance,” Laira leaned forward in her seat, “do you seriously believe this ship with no record anywhere in our files actually is the USS Discovery and her crew are here to help us?”

“Madam President-elect,” Charles’ spine straightened with righteousness, with truth at last, “I’d bet all our lives on it.”

Anyway, this was it, this was my Vance/Rayner "Oh. Oh." moment. Charles's sad smile, that little downward tug of his lips even as he tries to shake off how hurt he is.

Yeah, we fucked. I even loved him, once. Maybe I still do. But even though he left Kellerun, he was always trapped in that war, really. And I wasn't enough to get him out. I never could be.

So in the end ... I had to put some distance between us. Move on with my life. Not because I didn't want him, because I did. A bit of me still does. But I couldn't watch him hurt himself anymore.

In my head, for probably 29 and a half of the 30 years they've known each other, their relationship has gone something like this:

Vance: I could fix him

Rayner: (definitely not massively traumatised) *makes himself worse on purpose*

Charles has spent the best part of three decades sticking his neck out for Rayner and believing in him and vouching for him and trusting him and standing up for him because he gets results, damn it, while Rayner, who is definitely not self-destructing, how dare you, he's fine, shut up, becomes more and more of a liability, becomes harder and angrier and pushes Charles further and further away.

So by the time we meet them in season 5, after years of this behaviour, Charles eventually got some self respect and started dating a nice lady who didn't insult him all the time and who Rayner was definitely not allowed to meet, and pushed down his love for Rayner and compressed it into something cooler and more professional. And Rayner got deeper and deeper into his "I'm the one who's on the front line, you don't understand what it's like out there, I'm the only thing keeping the Federation safe while you hide behind your nice safe desk" schtick, until he finally fucked up so badly that Charles can't fix it, and that courtmartial in episode 2 snaps the final fraying thread of their 'friendship' (almost) irreparably.

You know. Just in case you thought the ending of a question you can't spit out might be a straightforwardly happy one.

Hello! There are five weeks until the season two premiere of Strange New Worlds and I am using them to photocap one episode of each series I haven't done one for yet (Discovery, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds).
