Ray Harryhausen’s 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957) is Jeff’s pick and holds a place in his heart as a favorite from childhood. To do this film justice, the Grue-Crew invited two guest hosts, Ralph Miller III and Bill Mulligan, both lifelong Ray Harryhausen and stop-motion-animation fanatics and special effects artists. As a result, Daphne, Jeff, and their guests record a record-length Classic Era episode. There is so much to talk about and… well, only a few sidetrack discussions. Let’s face it. "Die erste Fahrt zum Mond" ist ein britischer Science-Fiction-Film aus dem Jahr 1964, produziert von Charles H. Schneer, unter der Regie von Nathan Juran und mit Edward Judd, Martha Hyer und Lionel Jeffries in den Hauptrollen. Der Film, der von Columbia Pictures vertrieben wurde, ist eine Adaption des Drehbuchautors Nigel Kneale von H. G. Wells' Roman von 1901 "The First Men in the Moon"

Der Film wurde fünf Jahre vor der ersten Mondlandung der Menschen gemacht.

Ray Harryhausen plante, nach "Jason and the Argonauts" (1963), eine Version von H.G. Wells' Roman von 1904 "The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth" zu drehen, als er auf den Schriftsteller Nigel Kneale traf. Harryhausen wollte schon lange Wells' "First Men in the Moon" verfilmen, aber Produzent Charles Schneer war nicht begeistert, unter anderem aufgrund der Bedenken bezüglich des zeitlichen Rahmens der Handlung. Kneale hielt die Idee jedoch für ausgezeichnet, und er und Harryhausen schafften es, Schneer zu überzeugen, den Film zu realisieren.

Schneer war über die erste Drehbuchfassung von Kneale nicht begeistert.

Ein anderer Autor wurde hinzugezogen, um Kneales Drehbuch umzuarbeiten. Kneale sagt dazu: "Sie wollten es aufpeppen, lustiger machen, als ich es mir vorgestellt hatte." Dies inspirierte laut Kneale die Besetzung von Lionel Jeffries.

Schneer wählte Edward Judd aufgrund seiner Leistung in "The Day the Earth Caught Fire" (1961) aus.

Kneale sagte das in dem Buch von H.G Wells , Judds Charakter "ein tollpatschiges Wesen war, und es schien wichtig, das beizubehalten."

Kneale wusste, dass ein Land relativ bald auf den Mond gelangen und feststellen würde, dass es keine Seleniten gibt. Deshalb fügte er dem Drehbuch hinzu, dass die Seleniten von einem Erkältungsvirus ausgelöscht wurden, das der Professor zum Mond brachte, eine Idee, die Kneale direkt aus "Der Krieg der Welten" übernahm.

Über den Regisseur Juran sagte Schneer: "Er war ein ausgezeichneter Mann für das, was er tat, aber er war kein Regisseur für Schauspieler. Viele unserer Schauspieler waren es gewohnt, mehr Unterstützung von einem Regisseur zu bekommen, als er ihnen gab. Sie fühlten sich ein wenig verloren, wenn von ihnen erwartet wurde, ihre Arbeit ohne große Regiehilfe zu erledigen. Juran hatte wenig Geduld mit Schauspielern. Er konnte Schauspieler nicht tolerieren, die wissen wollten, was die Motivation ihrer Figur war. Er wollte mit der Arbeit vorankommen, für die er eingestellt wurde."

Die Dreharbeiten begannen am 1. Oktober 1963.

Schneer überzeugte Harryhausen, dass die kommerziellen Aussichten des Films verbessert würden, wenn er in Panavision gedreht würde. "Ray hatte Angst vor Panavision", sagte der Produzent. "Alles, was ich tun musste, war, ihm etwas anderes vorzuschlagen, und er wurde nervös."

Nach dem Film arbeiteten Harryhausen und Schneer fünf Jahre lang nicht mehr zusammen.

Columbia Pictures beendete danach die seit 1955 bestehende Zusammenarbeit mit Harryhausen. Die vier Produktionen ab 1960 boten zwar gute Spezialeffekte, wurden jedoch keine Kassenerfolge.

Ray Harryhausen verwendete NASA-Pläne als Inspiration für das Design des UN-Mondlandefahrzeugs bei der Gestaltung der Filmsets.

Die Raumfahrtanzüge, die von den UN-Astronauten im Film getragen werden, sind tatsächlich Windak-Hochdruckanzüge, die für die Royal Air Force entwickelt wurden. Jeder Anzug war mit einem Aqualung-Zylinder aus den 1960er Jahren ausgestattet, der als Rucksack getragen wurde. Diese Hochdruckanzüge wurden auch in zwei Doctor Who-Geschichten verwendet: in William Hartnells letzter Geschichte "The Tenth Planet" (1966) und in "The Wheel in Space" aus der Ära von Patrick Troughton (1968). Sie erscheinen auch in der Original-Star-Wars-Trilogie als Kostüme für Bossk und Bo Shek.

Im Mai 1959 kündigte Columbia an, einen Vertrag mit Charles Schneer abgeschlossen zu haben, um neun seiner Filme über drei Jahre zu vertreiben. Die Filme sollten unter anderem "Schlacht im Korallenmeer"(1959), "Die drei Welten des Gulliver"(1960), " Wernher Von Braun"(1960), "Die geheimnisvolle Insel"(1961), "Gentleman of China" und "Air Force Academy" umfassen.

"Die geheimnisvolle Insel" sollte die sechste Zusammenarbeit zwischen Schneer und Ray Harryhausen werden, beginnend mit "Das Grauen aus der Tiefe" (1955), "Fliegende Untertassen greifen an"(1956), "Die Bestie aus dem Weltenraum"(1957) und der dritte in Farbe, nach "Die siebente Reise des Sinbad"(1958) und "Die 3 Welten des Gulliver"(1960). Wie Sinbad und Gulliver sollte der Film in Spanien gedreht.

Das Drehbuch des Films basierte auf dem Roman von Jules Verne, der eine Fortsetzung zu zwei anderen Verne-Romanen war: "In 80 Tagen um die Welt" (1867) und "20.000 Meilen unter dem Meer" (1870). In dem Roman "Die geheimnisvolle Insel" trafen Flüchtlinge nach der Landung ihres Ballons auf der Insel auf viele Abenteuer, trafen auf Tom Ayrton, der auf einer benachbarten Insel gestrandet war, kämpften gegen Piraten und entdeckten, dass Captain Nemo ihr Wohltäter war und die Insel die Basis für die Nautilus war.

Die meisten Schauspieler des Films waren britische Schauspieler. Michael Craig stand bei Rank unter Vertrag, und Michael Callan war zur Zeit bei Columbia unter Vertrag. Percy Herbert wurde ursprünglich aufgrund seines britischen Akzents für die Rolle abgelehnt, erhielt sie aber nachdem er einen südlichen Akzent geübt hatte, indem er "Plötzlich im letzten Sommer" mehrmals anschaute.

Die Dreharbeiten begannen am 21. Juni 1960. Die Strandszenen in "Die geheimnisvolle Insel" wurden am Sa Conca Bay in Castell-Platja d'Aro in Katalonien, Spanien, gedreht. Die Flucht aus dem Konföderierten-Gefängnis - mit einem Beobachtungsballon - wurde auf dem Kirchplatz in Shepperton, England, gedreht. Die Innenräume wurden in den Shepperton Studios fertiggestellt.

Die Stop-Motion-Animations-Effekte wurden von Ray Harryhausen erstellt. Alle Modellwesen außer dem Riesenvogel (der später für "Gwangi's Rache" im Jahr 1969 wiederverwendet wurde) existieren immer noch.

Die Musik des Films wurde von Bernard Herrmann komponiert, der bereits die Musik für zwei frühere Harryhausen- und Schneer-Produktionen ("Die siebente Reise des Sinbad" und "Die 3 Welten des Gulliver") komponiert hatte. Die Musik wurde vom London Symphony Orchestra aufgeführt.

Ray Harryhausen entwickelte die Stop-Motion-Technik seines Lehrers Willis O’Brien zur Perfektion. Stop-Motion war lange Zeit wegweisend für Spezialeffekte beim Film. Harryhausen erweckte damit zahlreiche Fabelwesen, Dinosaurier und Geister auf der Leinwand zum Leben. Weltberühmt wurden unter anderem die Szenen aus den Sindbad-Filmen und die Kampfsequenzen aus Jason und die Argonauten.
