This week’s article includes the other “other” center in Toronto, a hot veteran winger in Tampa, a blueliner on a roll, a backup netminder playing like a No. 1 and a veteran center slumping in Big D.
First Liners (Risers)
Nazem Kadri, C, TOR – With all the focus on the sophomore centers and wingers in Toronto, the veterans sometimes get lost in the shuffle. That may have happened with Kadri this season. After tallying a career-high 32 goals and adding 29 assists last season, Kadri may have slid in drafts, as he isn’t Auston Mathews or Mitch Marner or even Patrick Marleau. But his current hot streak has Kadri up to 26 goals and 21 assists in 67 games.
Carl Soderberg, C, COL – After scoring 48 and 44 points his first two seasons with Boston, the team dealt his negotiating rights to the Avalanche, who inked the center to a five-year, $23.75 million contract in July 2015. Soderberg scored 12 goals and added 39 assists his first season in Colorado, but he fell off a cliff last season, tallying just six goals and eight assists with a nightmarish minus-26 rating. He was off to another slow start this year but has rebounded lately, posting four goals and as many assists in his last seven games.
Nick Bjugstad, LW, FLA – Bjugstad was drafted and broke in as a center, but the presence of Aleksander Barkov and Vincent Trocheck relegated the first-rounder to third-line status. Bjugstad tallied his first career hat trick last Thursday, and now has six goals and 18 points in 19 games since the beginning of February while playing the wing.
Sam Reinhart, RW, BUF – Like Bjugstad, Reinhart was drafted and broke in as a center but the presence of Jack Eichel and Ryan O’Reilly pushed him down the depth chart. Reinhart has 10 goals and 15 assists over his last 25 appearances, leaving him just two points shy of his third straight 40-point campaign.
Chris Kunitz, LW, TB – Kunitz peaked with 35 goals and 33 assists with 22 of those points coming with the man-advantage in 2013-14 as a member of the Penguins. His production declined to 40 points in each of the next two seasons and plummeted to just 29 points in 71 games last year. Pittsburgh opted not to bring the veteran winger and Tampa pounced on the four-time Cup winner. Kunitz has struggled most of the season but has slightly rounded into form recently, posting seven points, including four goals, in his last 12 games. His true value will come in the postseason.
Zdeno Chara, D, BOS – Chara isn’t the offensive weapon he was years ago but is still fairly productive. His lamp-lighter Sunday gives the big blueliner seven goals to go with 16 assists, 52 PIM, 125 shots and a plus-25 rating. Add in 134 hits and 113 blocked shots while playing 23-plus minutes a game and you have a complete defenseman. The 40-year old Czech will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, but if he wants to return, look for him to be back in Boston. One caveat is that Chara left Tuesday’s game with an injury. X-rays were negative, but it’s worth monitoring.
Seth Jones, D, CLM – Jones tallied twice more Monday before leaving the game with an upper-body injury, so check his status, though he may play Thursday. Those two markers gave the defenseman a career-high 15 goals to go along with a career-high 33 assists. However, he also took a hit to his last week which eventually forced him to miss Sunday’s practice, and perhaps he is dealing with a lingering issue. Jones has increased his scoring output each of the last four seasons since his rookie campaign and looks to have taken that next step forward as an elite blueliner.
Cam Talbot, G, EDM – It hasn’t been a great year for the Oilers or Talbot, but maybe the tide has turned. Edmonton’s No. 1 netminder went from losing five in a row in the beginning of February to winning three of four but then followed that up by losing three in a row. Talbot had won his last three straight starts, the last two with stellar efforts, before giving up just one goal and losing Tuesday. He is up to 25 wins, though that’s a far cry from the 42 he racked up last year.
Philipp Grubauer, G, WAS – Braden Holtby Signed a five-year, $30.5 million contract extension with the Capitals in July 2015 and has posted big numbers in years past, so he is entrenched as the Capitals’ starter. But he is suffering through a major rough patch, winning just once in his last eight starts, opening the door for Grubauer to see more action. The German netminder defeated the Jets on Monday and now sports an impressive .926 save percentage and 2.23 GAA with a 10-8-3 record for the campaign.
Others include Ivan Barbashev, William Karlsson, Aleksander Barkov, Nathan MacKinnon, Leon Draisaitl, Kevin Hayes, Evgeni Malkin, Artem Anisimov, Eric Staal, Ryan Getzlaf, Vincent Trocheck, David Krejci, Jeff Carter, Connor McDavid, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Rickard Rakell, Zach Parise, Patrik Laine, Mikko Rantanen, Jamie McGinn, Johnny Gaudreau, Jamie Benn, Charles Hudon, Mats Zuccarello (goal No. 100 Monday), Jonathan Huberdeau, Sebastian Aho, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Alex Ovechkin (goal No. 600 Monday), Ivan Provorov, Morgan Rielly, Ryan Ellis, Zach Werenski, Alex Pietrangelo, Keith Yandle, Mark Giordano, Hampus Lindholm, Torey Krug, Sami Vatanen, Marc-Andre Fleury (win No. 400 Monday), Martin Jones, Pekka Rinne, Roberto Luongo, Connor Hellebuyck, Devan Dubnyk and John Gibson.

Training Room (Injuries)
Matt Murray, G, PIT – Murray, who suffered a concussion in the Penguins’ morning skate on Feb. 26, has skated on his own and participated in some aspects of the team’s game-day skates. With Pittsburgh all but locked into a playoff spot, the team will be cautious with his return. It’s still possible that Columbus and New Jersey will get hot and pass Pittsburgh, moving the squad into a Wild Card spot, but that looks unlikely. The focus for the 23-year-old is to be ready in time for the playoffs, meaning we may not see Murray until late in the regular season, though he is traveling with the Penguins on their current road trip.
Others include Auston Matthews (shoulder, injured February 22, in non-contact jersey at practice), Patrice Bergeron (foot, has yet to skate after fracturing his right foot Feb. 24 against the Maple Leafs), Mark Scheifele (upper-body injury March 6, listed as day-to-day, but has missed four straight games), Mark Stone (leg, didn’t play Monday and Tuesday against the Panthers and Lightning), Kevin Shattenkirk (meniscus surgery, skating in practice), Ryan McDonagh (out since Feb. 7 with broken hand, returned to action Saturday), Carter Hutton (neck, remains sidelined), Steve Mason (knee scope, out several weeks) and Mike Smith (lower body, out since February 11, activated from injured reserve and started Sunday), and Tuukka Rask (lower body, day-to-day, missed Tuesday’s game).
Fourth Liners/Press Boxers (Fallers)
Jason Spezza, C, DAL – Spezza notched an assist Sunday, breaking a 14-game pointless streak — his longest in the last two seasons. The 34-year-old also sits at just 25 points (seven goals, 18 assists) in 68 games, half as many as he tallied in the same number of contests a year ago. Spezza is currently skating on the third line and averaging just 12:38 of ice time since the new year, showing how far he has fallen. Signed for one-more year at $7.5 million, Spezza could be a buyout candidate.
Conor Sheary, LW, PIT – Sheary scored 10 points in 44 games as a rookie, winning a Cup after a four-year collegiate career with UMass-Amherst. He was just scraping the surface, as Sheary earned a spot on the Penguins’ top line with Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel and posted 23 goals and 30 assists last season, winning another Cup. The 25-year old winger parlayed those two solid seasons into a three-year, $9 million contract extension. This season has seen Sheary take a step back, as his two tallies last Wednesday ended a 15-game goal drought and he now has just 14 goals and 24 points in 65 games.
Ryan Pulock, D, NYI – Pulock has a howitzer from the point, but he has struggled to put up points. The blueliner has just has just three points in his last 15 games and six goals and 15 assists in 55 games. Pulock’s future is still bright, but he falls behind Johnny Boychuk, Nick Leddy and Thomas Hickey on the Islanders’ depth chart. Stay the course with him, but temper your expectations the rest of the way.
Jimmy Howard, G, DET – The trade of Petr Mrazek to the Flyers provided Howard another lease on life. Howard wasn’t playing well before that deal, and he has done little to indicate that a change in fortune is forthcoming anytime soon. In Howard’s last five appearances heading into Monday’s game against San Jose, he hadn’t been able to notch a win, posting a sub-par .897 save percentage during the stretch.
Others include Alex Kerfoot, Oscar Lindberg, Logan Couture, Charlie Coyle, Richard Panik, Boone Jenner, T.J. Oshie, Jake Muzzin, Michael Del Zotto, Francois Beauchemin, Braden Holtby, Henrik Lundqvist and Scott Darling.

Cory Schneider made 39 saves, and Brian Boyle sparked a three-goal first period as New Jersey won its fourth straight game.
Schneider made 21 saves in the second period and withstood a flurry in the opening half of the period. He made five stops on Patrick Kane before allowing the Blackhawks wing’s 300th career goal late in the second.
The Devils scored three times in the first 13:22 to chase Chicago goaltender Corey Crawford for the second time this season. Kyle Palmieri scored a power-play goal and Pavel Zacha capped the three-goal outburst.
Sharks 2, Kings 0
Goalie Martin Jones stopped 28 shots for his 100th career victory while defeating his former team as San Jose topped Los Angeles.

Juuse Saaros made 25 saves for the Predators, who lost their third straight game.
Blues 3, Canucks 1
Kyle Brodziak’s goal with 1:30 left in the second period stood up as the winner as St. Louis defeated Vancouver.
Brodziak gave the Blues a 2-1 lead as he squeezed a shot from a sharp angle between Jacob Markstrom and the post — while the crowd groaned. St. Louis ended a three game-losing streak, while the Canucks suffered their fourth straight loss.
Patrik Berglund and Alex Steen (empty-netter) also scored for the Blues. Rookie Brock Boeser tallied for Vancouver.
Blue Jackets 2, Flyers 1 (SO)
Pierre-Luc Dubois scored the only goal in the shootout on his first NHL attempt as Columbus defeated Philadelphia.
Seth Jones scored in the opening period for the Blue Jackets, and Ivan Provorov answered with the tying goal in the second period for the Flyers. Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 stops for Columbus and Brian Elliott finished with 35 saves for Philadelphia.
The Flyers’ Sean Couturier nearly won the game with 17 seconds remaining in the third period, but his shot bounced off the goal post.
Panthers 1, Senators 0
James Reimer made 38 saves to lead Florida over Ottawa.
The shutout was the 18th of Reimer’s career and fourth against Ottawa. The victory gave the Panthers a three-game winning streak for the first time this season. Jonathan Huberdeau scored for Florida.
Mike Condon, playing in place of No. 1 goaltender Craig Anderson (illness), made 37 saves for the Senators.
Hurricanes 4, Sabres 2
Defenseman Justin Faulk scored twice to snap a two-month scoring drought and Teuvo Teravainen matched a career high with three assists as Carolina defeated Buffalo.
The Hurricanes won for the fifth time in its last six games. Cam Ward also improved to 7-0-1 in his last nine appearances in net for Carolina. Jordan Staal and Sebastian Aho also scored for the Hurricanes.
The Sabres got second-period goals from Nathan Beaulieu — his first of the season — and Zemgus Girgensons.
Avalanche 6, Coyotes 2
Matt Nieto had a goal and an assist, and Colorado scored four goals in less than four minutes following a series of nasty mid-ice fights in its victory over Arizona.
Carl Soderberg began the flurry and J.T. Compher and Nail Yakupov followed by scoring on the same power play resulting from Coyotes center Zac Rinaldo’s match penalty as the Avalanche needed only 3:46 to turn a scoreless game into a 4-0 lead.
Soderberg finished with two goals and Alexander Kerfoot had a pair of assists. Semyon Varlamov turned aside 32 shots despite allowing two short-handed goals to Derek Stepan.

This year’s Calder Trophy race is going to be a total free-for-all
A season after Matthews vs. Laine, it’s impossible to focus this year’s race on two candidates.
It didn’t take long for last season’s Calder Trophy race to come down to two players. Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine were the first two picks in the 2016 NHL Draft, and they were racking up goals like nobody’s business as teenagers. Unsurprisingly, the conversation around the NHL’s top rookie focused firmly on those two.
There were other rookies worthy of praise, namely Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski, but by the spring, everyone knew that the Calder would go to Matthews or Laine. There was just too hype around those players, and too many goals scored by them, for anyone else to crack into that debate.
Now just a few weeks into this season, the Calder Trophy race is shaping up much differently than a year ago. Without marquee top draft picks like Matthews or Laine to eat up the oxygen in the room, it’s looking like a wide swath of candidates will be pushing for their rightful claim as rookie of the year.
“Hockey is a young man’s game” has become a common refrain around the sport in recent years, and it’s not difficult to see why. More and more young players are emerging in key roles. The days of 35-year-olds running this league look dead and buried.
Rarely is that easier to see than in the Calder race, where you can easily go 10 deep in rookies who are off to very good starts this season. Unlike a year ago, it’s hard to see how this becomes a two-man race. Instead, it’s going to be a total free-for-all, even if we have a favorite at this point. Let’s run through the candidates.
The favorite: Clayton Keller
If there’s one player who can pull away from the Calder pack, it’s Keller. The Coyotes winger leads all rookies in goals (11), points (17), and shots on goal (58) through 17 games this season. He has a plus-6.4 percent Corsi Relative at even strength. He’s also receiving far more playing time per game (19:47) than any other rookie forward.
Keller may not keep up this production all season, but based on the first few weeks, he’s being asked to do more than any other rookie in the league. That’ll keep him in a strong position to put up big numbers, even if the Coyotes remain in the basement all season. It gives him a leg up on the competition, which is why he’s the favorite right now.
However, Keller will see some serious competition from some of his fellow first-year players.
The ‘B’ crew: Brock Boeser, Mathew Barzal
The top two candidate most likely to beat out Keller in voting are Boeser and Barzal. A pair of 2015 draft picks — Barzal, No. 16 overall, and Boeser, No. 23 overall — they both look to be on their way to reaching their potential as rookies. If it weren’t for the amazing start by Keller, these two would be all the rage across the hockey world.
Boeser has emerged as arguably the Canucks’ best player with 14 points in 12 games. He’s been unleashed on the top line under new coach Travis Green with great success. Barzal won’t be the Islanders’ best player as long as John Tavares is around, but he’s proving to be an amazing No. 2 center with 14 points in 15 games.
According to Corsica, Barzal is 10th among all skaters in 5-on-5 Game Score this season, which is even better than 24th-ranked Keller. Boeser is lower, ranking 102nd.
The Devils: Nico Hischier, Will Butcher, Jesper Bratt
Hischier was a popular Calder prediction before the season as the reigning No. 1 overall draft pick, but he’s been outscored by a defenseman and a former sixth-round pick so far this season. Butcher and Bratt have been crucial to New Jersey’s surprising turnaround, combining for 24 points in 28 appearances this season.
If anything, one of the issues for these three will be split votes. It might be more difficult for one Devils rookie to emerge if two others are sapping votes away from him, which won’t necessarily be an issue for Keller, Boeser, Barzal, or some other candidates.
Everyone else
It wouldn’t be a true free-for-all if those were the only options, right? A bunch of other players across the league could make it tough for the names above to pull away. Let’s run through the big ones.
Mikhail Sergachev: The Lightning defenseman acquired in the Jonathan Drouin trade is living up to expectations so far with 12 points in 16 games. He’s playing a fairly small role, averaging just 13:41 per game, but that hasn’t stopped him from producing so far.
Adrian Kempe: The Kings winger won’t keep shooting 33 percent all season, and his minus-6 percent even strength Corsi Relative is another red flag, but he’s still impressed with seven goals in 15 games.
Yanni Gourde: An undersized center who joined the team as an undrafted free agent years ago, Gourde is off to a hot start with 11 points in 16 games. He didn’t even leave the hotel he stayed in during training camp out of fear that he wouldn’t make the team. Like Kempe, there are signs he won’t keep it up, however.
Charlie McAvoy: The NHL’s rookie leader in ATOI by over three minutes per game, McAvoy is already thriving in a big role for Boston at age 19. He may have a tough time keeping up with Keller if the Arizona winger is averaging a point per game, but arguably no 2017-18 rookie has a brighter future in this league.
Nolan Patrick: Patrick has missed time due to injury, and didn’t play well before going down. Still, you can’t ignore the No. 2 overall pick from the 2017 draft in this discussion.
Kyle Connor: He’s only played nine games due to injury, but Connor has quickly stepped into a big role with the Jets. The results have been mixed, including seven points and a 43.7 even strength Corsi.
Okay, seriously, there are so many guys we can include here: Alex DeBrincat, Alexander Kerfoot, Alex Tuch, Charles Hudon, Alex Iafallo, Sonny Milano, Martin Frk, Christian Fischer, Anders Bjork, Jakub Vrana, Joel Eriksson Ek, Pierre-Luc Dubois ... the list goes on and on.
This is great for the NHL
Make no mistake, this is exactly what you should want as a hockey fan. There are so many good rookies in the league right now that Keller, an obvious Calder candidate in any given season, is going to be given a serious run for his money. This is a fantastic problem for the NHL to have, and a reminder that hockey’s future remains bright because of the talent on the ice more than anything.

University of Denver's Will Butcher wins 2017 Hobey Baker Award
AP
Well, it actually happened.
Denver defenseman Will Butcher won the 2017 Hobey Baker award, despite some potential hurdles.
There was always the possibility that Butcher would consolidate the western bloc of voters, and for understandable reasons. At the same time, you had to acknowledge the very good chance Union’s Mike Vecchione and Northeastern’s Zach Aston-Reese would split the eastern voters to some degree.
[Follow Puck Daddy on social media: Twitter | Instagram | Facebook | Tumblr]
Butcher finished the regionals tied for second in points among defensemen nationally, and tied for fifth in points per game. But as with any No. 1 defender on an elite team, his quality extended well beyond his ability to produce goals.
While he certainly didn’t come close to the kind of production the forwards who also made the Hobey Hat trick put up (understandably, as a defenseman), he checks a lot of other Hobey boxes:
• Plays for a great team • American • Senior • Leadership-y • Good at defense • Only 5-foot-10, so you know he works hard, folks!
Western voters largely seem to value things that aren’t necessarily quantifiable or directly attributable to individual performance. That’s how so many mediocre St. Cloud guys end up being Hobey finalists. So while Butcher is certainly deserving (for all the reasons I laid out earlier this week) whether he would actually win was very much up in the air.
But as the week went on, a general feeling among the college hockey media started to develop: Butcher probably had a better shot than some might have given him credit for at first blush, even a few weeks ago. Again, it’s easy to see why. Best player in the best conference, playing the best minutes for the team that was basically the best all season long.
Moreover, the fact that Hobey voting is done the after the regionals (which doesn’t really make sense, but whatever) and the Pioneers nuked the field in Cincinnati, winning a combined 11-5, made Butcher’s candidacy a little more robust.
[NCAA Frozen Four: Minnesota-Duluth beats Harvard with last-minute goal]
[NCAA Frozen Four: Denver annihilates Notre Dame; sets up all-NCHC final]
Though we’ll never know for sure, one imagines this was a close vote. There are clear arguments for and against each player, though the reasonability of each varies widely.
It’s worth noting there were weird biases at play here, pretty much across the board. With Aston-Reese, you had a guy who dominated the competition all year long but did so for a relatively weak team (insofar as it didn’t make the tournament or, indeed, even come close). Of course, that boils down to the Huskies’ horrid goaltending, but nonetheless they won a lot of games 5-4 and 4-3. Aston-Reese was the biggest reason why, scoring the most goals and points in the country, playing in all situations, and so on. Northeastern was flat-out dangerous with him on the ice, and that he played without either of his intended linemates for a big chunk of the season.
Regardless, voters love holding team lack of team success against star players (true in the NHL as well) so if you wanted to manufacture a reason why the nation’s leading points-per-game player didn’t deserve the award, that’s it.
The bias against Vecchione was, clearly, that he came from a weaker league. Better team? Sure, record-wise. But put Northeastern in the ECAC and the Huskies win a lot more than 18 games. And 18 ain’t a bad number. Vecchione had plenty going for him as a high-scoring senior on a good line for a team generally viewed as being defensively responsible, but voters — as they did last year for Kyle Connor — could have held the weakness of the conference in which he played against him. Not entirely fair, but understandable.
Vecchione finished tied for the national lead in points with Aston Reese in the same number of games, but the points breakdown clearly tips in the latter’s favor:
Yahoo
Aston-Reese had one extra point at 5-on-5 and four more on the power play, but Vecchione padded out his total with an NCAA-leading eight points on empty-net goals. Aston-Reese had only two. And he scored three points with his own goalie out, compared to Vecchione’s one. They had the same number of shorthanded points (five).
Moreover, while Vecchione finished eighth in the nation in assists per game (0.89 per) to Aston-Reese’s 11th-place 0.84, it’s also important to note that Vecchione had eight more secondary assists than he did primaries. Aston-Reese had 12 more primaries than secondaries.
Seen this way, Aston-Reese either scored or directly set up 53 of Northeastern’s 140 goals (38 percent). Vecchione only scored or set up 42 of Union’s 143 (29 percent).
Yahoo
As you can see, Butcher was clearly instrumental in the Pios’ power play success (he had a point on almost half of Denver’s extra-man goals) and made things happen at 5-on-5 as well, despite getting the toughest minutes coach Jim Montgomery could find for him. While there was concern that Butcher might get shortchanged because of his position, the case he made for himself in the final few weeks of the season was just too irresistible.
Denver’s Tanner Jaillet wins Mike Richter award as nation’s top goalie
Tanner Jaillet was also named the winner of the fourth annual Mike Richter award.
He had .930 save percentage and went 24-5-4 in 34 starts as of the time of the vote, just before the start of the NCAA tournament.
My thoughts on the award were spelled out pretty clearly a few weeks ago here. For my money, Williams was the only logical choice, having led the nation in both 5-on-5 and overall save percentages by a huge margin.
For the record, my Richter ballot looked like this: 1) Charles Williams, Canisius 2) Tanner Jaillet, Denver 3) Parker Gahagen, Army 4) Michael Bitzer, Bemidji State 5) Kyle Hayton, St. Lawrence
Neither Gahagen nor Hayton made the final five, with Hunter Miska and Cal Petersen (both of whom were on much better teams but turned in slightly less impressive seasons individually) swapping in for them.
Clayton Keller named national Rookie of the Year, All-American teams announced
Okay, let’s just get through some housekeeping with the some of the other awards.
BU’s Clayton Keller won the Tim Taylor national ROTY award, for scoring 45 points as a true freshman in just 31 games. He led all rookies in goals per game, points per game, shots per game, total shots on goal, and shorthanded goals. He was really good, and he’s already in the NHL now, with two assists in three games.
The other award to announce here is Wisconsin’s Aidan Cavallini winning the Derek Hines Unsung Hero award, having been a depth player for his first three seasons with the Badgers, and only scoring his first career goal on Dec. 9 this season. He scored five more the rest of the way, and voters felt he best highlights why sticking with it is cool and good.
Finally, here are the national All-American teams, 22 of whom were first-time nominees:

St. Michael’s senior duo both win Hockey Humanitarian
Danny Divis and Justin McKenzie, both seniors at Div. 3 St. Michael’s, were honored as Hockey Humanitarians for starting a mental health awareness organization called Hope Happens Here after both lost loved ones to suicide early in life.
In addition, both work on their school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to create a support network for kids at the college who need it.
You can read more about their work here. It’s really awesome and, as with every other Hockey Humanitarian winner, these are great kids.

Top 300 Keeper League Skaters – September 2018
Here are the Top 300 skaters to own in your points-only keeper league – September edition.
This month is just tweaking the big one from last month (August was the annual full player-by-player audit). Mostly a few young players I adjusted, added some more new prospects and adjusted based on the Henrik Zetterberg and Nate Schmidt news.
As always, players within plus/minus 5.0 ratings should be considered equal and at that point become a matter of personal bias and/or team needs. Look for the Top D list tomorrow. The Top G list was posted earlier this week (here) and I also did the Top Prospect Goalies (here) and I should note that I made changes to that originally posted list and re-posted it.
Click on a player name to be taken to his sweet new fantasy hockey profile (and bookmark that section because you'll be referring to it often because it's pretty awesome)

Top 300 Keeper League Skaters – July 2018
Here are the Top 300 skaters to own in your points-only keeper league – July edition.
This month I'm still manually tweaking. The August edition will be fully audited with proper short-term projections entered into my template, proper lineups put in, etc. For this edition, I added in the best drafted players from last month, plus adjusted for the free agent frenzy (I'm sure I missed a couple, please let me know in the comments if you catch any).
As always, players within plus/minus 5.0 ratings should be considered equal and at that point become a matter of personal bias and/or team needs. Look for the Top D list tomorrow. The Top G list was posted Tuesday (here).

Top 300 Keeper League Skaters – June 2018
Here are the Top 300 skaters to own in your points-only keeper leagues, June edition.
Just some more tweaking this month, mostly with prospects as I just completed the Fantasy Prospects Report (buy it here). Players within +/-5.0 rating points of each other should generally be considered equal value and at that point it becomes a matter of personal preference and team need.
This is the WEEK OF RANKINGS! Thursday was the Top 100 Goalies (here), Saturday will be the Top 100 Keeper Defensemen, Sunday the Top 200 Prospect Forwards and Monday the Top 50 Prospect Defensemen. Be sure to check back!
Pick up the 12th annual DobberHockey Fantasy Prospects Report here! (Hint: if you buy the Keeper League Fantasy Pack, then the Fantasy Guide works out to just an additional $2)
Click any player name to be taken to his wonderful new fantasy hockey player profile (once you see these profiles, you won't use any other because it has all you need!).

Top 300 Keeper League Skaters – April, 2018
Here are the Top 300 players to own in your points-only keeper league – April edition.
April, May and June are my "fun months". These are when I stop including this season's immediate payback, and look ahead to next year and onward. But I do it without crunching the numbers. My Fantasy Guide is out on August 1 and so the numbers, free agency, depth charts all get factored into July and August rankings. Until then, I go through player by player and focus more on their 3YP, upside, and then ballpark next season's points. Fun, right?
These are for points-only leagues, I look no further than three years ahead, players within +/- 5.0 rating points of each other should be considered equal and at that point become a matter of personal bias and/or team needs.
Support the site! Pre-order the 13th annual Interactive Playoff Draft List – out Thursday (tomorrow!).

Top 200 Fantasy Prospect Forwards – March 2018
Here are the Top 200 prospect forwards to own your fantasy hockey keeper league – March edition!
Takes into account several aspects – each one is very important and how you prioritize them for your fantasy squad depends on your current needs (long-term, high upside or short-term, NHL-ready, lower ceiling). As always, two players within +/-5.0 rating points of each other should be considered equal value and at that point comes down to team needs or personal preference. Top 200 Fantasy Prospect Forwards – February 2018
Here are the Top 200 prospect forwards to own in your points-only fantasy hockey keeper league, February edition!
As always, players within +/-5.0 rating points of each other should be considered equal and at that point would depend on your team needs (NHL-ready but lower upside, or several years away with high upside) and personal biases. The top defensemen list will be out Tuesday. Click any name to be taken to their DobberProspects scouting profile.

Ramblings: Shooting Percentage Outliers (Jan 30)
If you’re like me, you desperately want to see the All-Star draft return. It’s probably never coming back as the players hated it, but considering the NBA has started to dip their toes into the water we could see it sparked up again. My fresh idea to remove some of the angst of the players is that once the All-Stars are named, you have three captains who draft three teams’ worth of players. The leftovers are the fourth team. This way, you don’t have one player singled out. You have an entire team who could then band together. I’d bet the leftovers team would win more All-Star tournaments than not.
This idea only works now that they’ve moved to the 3-on-3 tournament style, which was a brilliant wrinkle. Bringing back the draft would kick it up one extra level and really help to market the players, but maybe this is just too counter to hockey culture.
I really enjoyed the wrinkle of the consecutive saves streak replacing the shootout challenge as it flipped the narrative towards the goaltenders and took pressure off the skaters, allowing them to be more creative. I still like the idea of having mic’d up celebrities tending goal against NHL shooters in a shootout challenge and really getting them to ham it up, but I wonder how long it would take for that gimmick to get old.
*
There are 12 players with at least 25 games played who are currently shooting 20% or higher. Last season six players pulled off that feat, and none of them are repeaters. In fact, since 2013-14 there have only been 14 players who have shot over 20% for a full season and only one of them shows up on that list twice: Paul Byron. The point being, these kinds of outliers don’t usually hold up over 82 games, and more scarcely do they pop up more than once. The list of players currently above 20% shooting:

What the top three on this list are doing is ridiculous. You have to go back to 1994 and Cam Neely for the last time anyone with any kind of shot volume scored on over quarter of their shots. Peak Mike Ribeiro also had a 25% shooting season once, but generally this kind of shooting is a thing of the past. None of this is to say that these guys can’t continue to be productive, but a lesser version of said productivity should be expected going forward.

Most of that list is predictable junk, but some of these players, particularly the top three are of real interest to fantasy owners. What in the hell happened to Domi who carries a career 10.2% shooting percentage? I know Lehkonen has been banged up, but how does a shooter that good fall off so steeply? Some of the players on this list should improve in the second half.
*
Filip Forsberg could be back as soon as tonight against Chicago. He practised yesterday with full contact. Make your lineup adjustments accordingly.
This could really help Ryan Johansen who has stumbled with just five points in 12 games since Christmas. I’ve discussed this before, but with Johansen’s game steering more and more towards playmaking he has become very volatile. Not only have you lost his shot volume, but he is also at the whims of his shooters, and outside of Forsberg, there aren’t too many above average shooters in this lineup.
*
Jacob Trouba will miss the next 6-8 weeks with an ankle injury. The first instinct is to pray for Connor Hellebuyck, but the Jets have been quite resilient in the face of injury having already lost a good deal of center depth with Mark Scheifele and Adam Lowry on the shelf. Eventually, however, you hit the straw that breaks the camel’s back. I am not sure if we are there yet as the Jets are one of the few teams with legitimate right-handed defenseman depth. Presumably, Tucker Poolman will draw in as a lineup regular. While Tyler Myers and Dustin Byfuglien will step into bigger minutes.
This could prove particularly beneficial for Byfuglien who has taken a real step backwards after having his minutes clipped by over four per game. The entirety of his loss in minutes has come from penalty kill and 5-on-5 use so it shouldn’t have impacted him that badly, but Byfuglien has had gripes about not playing as much as he’d like. I hope he’s ready.
The Jets also have a ton of cap space, organizational depth and their full complement of draft picks to play with if they want to dip into the rental market. They have generally been resistant to making big splashes, but did pull off the Evander Kane/Myers deal, along with some low-cost rentals in Jiri Tlusty and Lee Stempniak on the road to their last playoff run.
I’d argue that promoting internally is the best method for these guys to upgrade since Jack Roslovic is on the cusp, but playoff teams can never have too much depth. They are also still giving Matt Hendricks a regular shift so there is room for upgrades. Do they risk upsetting the apple cart too much if they push him out?
*
Some Avalanche updates:
{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/Avalanche?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Avalanche</a> Varlamov full practice today could play on trip; Bernier in tomorrow; Barrie possible for tomorrow; Andrighetto and Barberio still ailing, staying home.</p>— Rick Sadowski (@RickS7) <a href="https://twitter.com/RickS7/status/958103232080789506?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 29, 2018</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}
Jonathan Bernier was the bee’s knees for a couple of weeks but has now lost two in a row. With Semyon Varlamov apparently close, you can probably jump out soon.
Tyson Barrie’s imminent return takes a bite out of Sam Girard, but the truth is that even with top PP usage Girard hasn’t been particularly relevant. He could take over full time if Barrie is trade, but remember that Cale Makar looms as the future here.
*
It sounds like John Gibson is ready to go after getting banged up before the All-Star break.
*
Amazingly, Victor Hedman will travel with Tampa Bay on their four-game road trip meaning he is likely to play at some point in the next week. Apparently, he has been out for three weeks already, but it seems like he has barely missed time. I suppose January was the month to miss. Between the bye week and the All-Star break he missed more games than he might have.
*
Mark Stone was placed on IR retroactive to January 20th, so he could return right away, but this looks like it’s going to be a bit of a guessing game.
Stone has been the only Senator who has avoided slumping yet this season so losing him is a big hit.
*
Jaromir Jagr has passed through waivers and is expected to be heading overseas.
In other Flames news, Michael Frolik appears to be back from injury. Frolik isn’t particularly fantasy relevant, but he is a massive upgrade on Troy Brouwer, which will help the shutdown line with Mikael Backlund and Matthew Tkachuk tilt the ice better.
