Since Sir Stamford Raffles founded ZSL in 1826, there have been many achievements at ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, as well as in our conservation work in the wild.

1828
London Zoo opened to Fellows of the Society, and to the public with a written 'order' from a Fellow and payment of 1 shilling.
Lady Raffles elected first woman Fellow.
1829
The Zoological Society of London granted a Royal Charter by King George IV.
1830
Scientific Meetings started. First issue of the Proceedings of the Zoological Society published.

1916
Evelyn Cheesman appointed Assistant Curator of Insects, the first woman in a curatorial post at ZSL.
1926
As the twentieth century dawned the need to keep and study large animals in more natural surroundings became apparent. Sir Peter Chalmers Mitchell (ZSL Secretary 1903-35) envisaged a new park no more than 70 miles from London, over 200 acres in size and easily accessible to the visiting public. In 1926 an ideal site was found, derelict Hall Farm, near Whipsnade village, nearly 600 acres on the Chiltern Downs. ZSL purchased the farm in December 1926 for £13,480 12s 10d.
1928
The first animals arrived at Whipsnade Wild Animal Park - two Amherst pheasants, a golden pheasant and five red jungle fowl. Others soon followed including muntjac, llama, wombats and skunks.
1931
Whipsnade Wild Animal Park opened - the world's first open zoological park.
1938
Children's Zoo opened at London Zoo.

1947
Guy the gorilla arrived at London Zoo.
1960 and 1961
The Institute of Zoology is established. Lord Zuckerman, then Secretary of ZSL, raised funds from two medical foundations to found laboratories where scientists would be employed by ZSL and undertake research.

Visitors no longer allowed to feed the animals.
1970
Herd of white rhinos brought to Whipsnade, as a result of an agreement with the Natal Parks Board, who had raised white rhino from near extinction. They thought it would help the conservation effort if there were breeding groups outside Africa as well.
1971
Emperor of Japan visited Regent’s Park and was made an Honorary Fellow.

Week 11 Group Writting and Workshop Exercise (05/20/19)
My Piece: Week 10: Independent Study II (May 17)
The music was blasting, people were singing and dancing on the various stages, families were chattering and I was couldn’t help but stop and smile. Today I went to the annual Tel Aviv Eat Festival that was held alongside the Eurovision Village. The festival was located on Charles Clore Park and overlooked the ocean. Walking around the proximity of the event, I observed everything around me. It was then that I began to feel sentimental about leaving this beautiful place that I have called home for the past five months. My friends and I made rounds around the various food trucks and stands. As I walked around trying to find the best food trucks I tried my best to observe all of my surroundings- the people, the place and my friends- all things that I will shortly be saying goodbye to.
The festival contained 80 food stalls, over 500 dishes and 20 chef restaurants-many of which I have been to before. While reading each restaurant’s name, all these memories came rushing back from this past semester. I was able to recall all the different memories and times I had while eating at those restaurants with friends. Each time we discovered a place we have already been, we discussed the dishes we ate their as well as all the funny memories we made. My friends and I love experiencing Tel Aviv through food. Each week we try and find the best restaurants to go to. We tried to find local Israeli food as well as some of Tel Aviv’s famous hot spots. After a busy week of classes, it is always nice to sit and relax with friends while learning more about Tel Aviv, its culture and food.
As someone who is a food enthusiast, I loved the idea of a food festival and was so excited to attend. My friends and I spent the day at the Gordon beach and walked to the festival from there. Everything that we ordered we all shared. I find this the most fun way to eat as you get to try many different foods without getting full. Some of the dishes that we shared included: truffle ravioli, roasted cauliflower, shawarma, burgers, dumplings, Pad Thai, and mac and cheese stuffed in challah. All of the dishes were amazing but my personal favorite was the truffle ravioli. For dessert we got a milkshake and waffles to share. I was stuffed.
Reflecting back on all the different types of food that I ate relates to my overall experience abroad here in Tel Aviv. I believe that coming abroad here I was exposed to a diverse group of people and many different experiences. As someone who comes from a small town where many people are not Jewish, I got to experience being in a place where many people share my religion and beliefs. I got to experience holidays here such as Passover and Independence day. Being in Tel Aviv during these holidays was truly an amazing experience. I feel that I really got to connect with Israel and learn even more about where I live. Also, while studying here in Tel Aviv and attending Tel Aviv University, I have made friends from all over the world. I got to experience living in the dorms with two international students, one who speaks very little English. Living with two international students from different countries, I learned both about their lives back home and their cultures. I got to try their local dishes that they made for dinner, learn about the countries in which they live in and what they miss most about being home. I also got to take classes were I learned about many different countries, topics and got to meet many different people. Living with them in a place that is foreign to all of us really opened by eyes to the world.
The Tel Aviv Eat food festival displayed so many aspects of Tel Aviv that I love- all the spirt, pride for the Israel, amazing food and Israeli culture. I felt that my time at the festival was a night that I will always remember. I felt that I got to experience the festival not as a tourist but by someone who lives here in Tel Aviv. As my time in Tel Aviv is coming to an end, I feel that my time here has shaped me and allowed me to grow as an adult. I feel that I was able to fully immerse myself in the culture and all that Tel Aviv has to offer. I was able to meet many different people, learn Hebrew, history and many other subjects, and expand my knowledge on the history of Israel.
Exercise:
Today I worked with Daniel and Melissa.
Melissa:

Throughout your piece, your voice was personable and entertaining. I felt like I was at the food fest with you!

Your language was very easy to understand. I felt that your piece had a great flow as a whole.
Structure
Your structure was perfect. You kept the reader interested and entertained the entire piece. I felt like I was reading a story.
Reader
I was intrigued and interested about your personal experiences at Tel Aviv Eat. As the reader, I enjoyed reading your piece.
Revision
As a revision, I would add more specific detail to the types of food you ate at the fest. It was a great piece overall and it looks like you had a great experience!
Daniel:
Voice:
She has a very strong voice in this passage. I enjoyed how it was very conversational and personal.
Language:
Throughout her passage she was very descriptive and allowed me to feel as if I was eating the food too.
Structure:
This piece flows very nicely and captured all points of your time at the festival.
Reader:
I was intrigued right away with your first sentence. This was a great passage
Revision:
If there is one thing I would change about your passage it would be to include an experience that you had at one of the actual restaurants of the stands that you got food at.

My favorite part about living in Tel Aviv- I live just a stroll away from the coast. I love the border between the new city and historic Jaffa in the distance, separated by a gilded sunset kindling the billowing tide as it ripples along the Charles Clore Park shoreline. It's a sunset that always knows how to steal my breath away and capture my unabridged attention. ✨🌅 #sunset #beach #beautiful (at Tel Aviv Beach ISRAEL)

The Practice of Revising
Image of Tel Aviv Original:
Izzy,
I feel so lucky to be perched on the overlook in Jaffa taking in the view of the shore and the city of Tel Aviv. I know that this is your favorite city too, and I wish that I could reach out and grab your hand as we inhale the salty sea air and feel the cool breeze of the Mediterranean against our bronzed skin. The water is especially turquoise today, like Mommy’s stone necklaces that she likes to wear with her white eyelet summer dress, and the waves are calmly lapping against the beige beach as if they are waiting to be recorded for some millennial’s meditation and nature sounds Spotify playlist. Life is very good right now.
The fears of global pandemic and crashing economics flee from my mind as I close my eyes for a moment and breathe deeply. I feel extremely grateful to be where I am, though your presence would make these moments all the more pleasant in my mind. From the park in the old city I can see some of our favorite landmarks – Jaffa beach, where I introduced you to my Israeli ‘boyfriend’, Charles Clore Park where we strolled on Shabbat and giggled with absolute glee about the fact that we were in Israel together, and Neve Tzedek where we enjoyed Anita’s frozen yogurt covered in fresh fruit and chocolate. These memories swirl around in my mind as I reflect on how special Tel Aviv is to us.
Though we may not find ourselves together in this very spot in April as we planned, I know the time will come. Maybe it will be in a few months. And then again in a few years with our sexy Israeli husbands, and then again in a decade with our adorable mini-me’s, and then again when the Middle Eastern sun has finally taken its toll on our wrinkled skin. To a many more in our Holy Land.
Sending you lots of love and hummus,
Katie
Image of Tel Aviv Revised:
Katie sat perched on the overlook in Jaffa taking in the view of the shore and the city of Tel Aviv. She felt so lucky to be in her favorite place, but was feeling especially blissful for being in the company of her sister and mom. Closing her eyes, she put her two arms around their shoulders and inhaled the salty sea air that drifted upward to meet their bronzed skin. They stared at the turquoise water, which matched the color of the stone necklace her mom was wearing with her white eyelet summer dress. Life was good again.
The trauma of the global coronavirus pandemic swirled in Katie’s mind as she took a deep breath and reflected on the past few months. She felt beyond grateful to be in Israel after an almost unbearable quarantine, separated from the country she loved most. From their location in the old city they could see some of their favorite landmarks, standing proud despite going through what felt like the end of the world. They pointed out Gordon Beach, where they had watched the sunset every night, and the area of the shuk, where they had gotten lunch at Shlomo & Doron. Tears wells in her eyes as she finally felt the joy that had been absent in her life for so long. Tel Aviv was their special place.
They did not know how long they would have to wait to find themselves together in this very spot. The uncertainty had brought them anxiety and deep pangs of sadness throughout the year. Now that they had finally made it back, they were ready to plan their next trip. They would come back every year and make Israel their real home. To many more in our Holy Land.
Explanation:
I chose to revise this writing exercise by making major structural changes and altering the point of view. Instead of a first person reflection of the impending coronavirus pandemic, I changed the scene to third person looking back on the first trip to Israel after travel restrictions are lifted.
Speaking Hebrew Original:
Across from Habima Square on Ben Zion Boulevard sits my favorite cafe. I first discovered this cafe by chance; after a 5 mile Shabbos run along the beach, I was starving and in need of something to replenish my body. As most restaurants were closed, I was happy to find that this to-go coffee shop was open and serving plenty of customers. Young couples, groups of friends, and several adorable dogs lounged on yellow, pink, and blue blankets on the grassy strip in between the boulevards, sipping mint tea and nibbling on pastries. Having been in the middle of Ulpan, I was both excited and nervous to be practicing my Hebrew. I chatted with my friends in line as my sweat started to dry and my stomach began grumbling furiously. I recited my order in my head, double checking with my roommate if my grammar was correct. When the cashier waved me to the front to ask me what I wanted, I proudly asked for a cappuccino with almond milk and a sabich sandwich. To my utter disappointment, my Americanness was seeping out of me like a pungent perfume of hamburgers and diabetes, and she responded in English. Once I received my sandwich, however, I couldn’t be mad anymore. Fluffy ciabatta bread baked with za’atar, creamy tahini, thick slices of egg, crispy eggplant, tomato, and red onion layered together, one heavenly bite after another. At least once a week after this day, I went to my favorite cafe and ordered my sandwich in Hebrew. I didn’t let the fact that my accent isn’t perfect stop me from practicing. One sunny afternoon, the cashier even told me that I spoke very well, which made the sandwich taste that much better. I can’t wait to go back to Cafe Habima and practice my Hebrew again ;) – the reward sure is worth it!

For this writing exercise, I referenced Jenks’ revision advice on honing dialogue. I chose to add dialogue in Hebrew to show my elementary knowledge rather than tell the reader about it.

Tel Aviv, March 2023
Back to the "Hill ( tel) of Spring (aviv)". I wanted to go up the coast a bit but with Shabat and Purim no chance. So on Saturdays people don't handle money, most places are closed and trains are not running.
This way I got to check out the vegan bakery, stroll in the city and enjoy the sunshine.
On my way I discovered some buildings of 'The White City', which is a collection of over 4,000 buildings from the 1930s. They were built in Bauhaus style by Jewish architects who fled to the British Mandate of Palestine from Germany after the rise to power of the Nazis.
I spent some time watching the surfers at Charles Clore Beach. Many people are playing Matkot (with the two rackets and one ball) and I have to say the Israeli are pros at this game 🎾.
It's such a nice feeling that people are so friendly, curious, open minded and ready to help.
Also I found a cute little jewelry store, owned by a goldsmith and a gallery by a children's books author, both such cozy and welcoming places to spend hours in.

Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel My recent trip to Tel Aviv was spurred by a very good friend’s wedding, but it is the first time I have been there as a true adult and I THOROUGHLY enjoyed it! People there are beyond kind once you get to know them, the nightlife is only second to Berlin. A few recommendations are below... enjoy them if you’re lucky enough to visit this unique and amazing city! Sheraton Hotel, HaYarkon 115: While this hotel is a chain, its location can’t be beat and their staff went above and beyond to accommodate us. Uber Taxi: There are some crooked cabbies in Israel, the app keeps them honest. If anyone offers you a flat rate, take the meter-- it’s always been cheaper for me. Aroma Coffee: This national chain has it all and ran Starbucks into the ground in Israel. The Iced Aroma is a treat and their salads are affordable and delicious.
Concierge, Dizengoff 95: Mixology+Techno=Very Israel.
Nahat, Dizengoff Circle 1: Third Wave Coffee Manta Ray, Charles Clore Park: This cute restaurant on the beach is delicious, affordable and the views can’t be beat. Surprisingly not a tourist trap! Abouelafia: This chain of bakeries sells pretzels with Za’Tar. Enough said! Ha’Achim, Shlomo Ibn Gabirol 12: This insanely delicious Israeli restaurant is basically farm to table and worth every shekel.   Alphabet, Ahad Ha’Am 54: Nightclub with amazing techno parties.
